  1. Zenless Zone Zero has just teased a collaboration with one of the greatest DJs of all-time, Tiesto, as well as notable duo Lucas & Steve. This came via a short cinematic released on social media, which displayed the artists in-engine. The current scope of this collaboration ******** unclear, although it's absolutely music focused (surprise, surprise). The official press release notes that more information on this collaboration will be released on July 2, ahead of the game's launch on July 4, so for now we'll have to sit and wait to hear more about what's in store for roughly two weeks. We're inching closer to the much-anticipated release of Zenless Zone Zero, and with the game surpasing 40 million pre-registered players it's safe to say we're due for an explosive launch. If you've not signed up yet, there are some slick rewards up for grabs in case you didn't know, which are well-worth snatching if you're planning on jumping in later this year. 5. Microsoft is now issuing Redfall refunds a month after it announced the end of development, the cancelation of DLC, and the closure of developer Arkane Austin. In May 2024, Microsoft shocked the video game world when it closed a number of Bethesda studios including Redfall maker Arkane Austin and Hi-Fi Rush and The Evil Within developer Tango Gameworks. On Redfall, Microsoft promised a "make-good" offer for those who had bought the now-canceled Hero DLC, which was set to add new characters to the game. Players who bought the Hero Pass as part of the premium ***** Back Edition or the premium ***** Back upgrade can now secure a refund via Bethesda’s customer support website. Digital purchases made via the Xbox Store, Microsoft Store, Epic Games Store, or Steam will be refunded back to the original form of payment automatically. If your purchase was not from these retailers, you’ll need to submit a ticket to get a refund. If you bought physical, you’ll need to contact your retailer to request a refund or store credit for the ***** Back DLC. Redfall received its final update at the end of May, marking a disastrous year for the co-op focused vampire game. It was widely panned by critics and players at launch and reportedly had a deeply troubled development. Redfall's launch struggles ultimately resulted in executives like Phil Spencer and Matt ****** issuing statements about Xbox's own role in its weak release. Last year, then-Bethesda Softworks publishing head Pete Hines reassured players that Arkane wouldn’t give up on Redfall, insisting he was confident it would be a good game people wanted to play on Game Pass 10 years from now. In our 4/10 review, IGN said: "Redfall is a bafflingly bad time across the board. Plagued with bland missions, boneheaded enemies, and repeated technical problems, Redfall simply wasn't ready for daylight in this state." Sometimes I have to make hard decisions that frankly are not decisions I love, but decisions that somebody needs to go make. Speaking at IGN Live, Phil Spencer addressed the studio closures, insisting: “I have to run a sustainable business inside the company and grow, and that means sometimes I have to make hard decisions that frankly are not decisions I love, but decisions that somebody needs to go make.” The closure of Arkane Austin comes amid one of the toughest times for the video game industry in recent memory, with thousands of staff losing their jobs this year alone. Significant cuts at Sony, Microsoft, and other publishers have hit hard alongside an ever-growing list of studio shutdowns. Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. 6. Spoiler Warning: This article features mild spoilers for the final boss of Elden Ring. On the eve of Elden Ring's expansion Shadow of the Erdtree launching, FromSoftware has finally allowed players to use Spirit Steed (horse) Torrent against the infamous Elden ****** boss, addressing one of the few complaints players have about the beloved role-playing game. The first chunky Elden Ring patch in a long time was release today, June 20, 2024, with a wealth of features, but perhaps none more exciting than the ability to summon Torrent for the game's final ******. The Elden ****** isn't a particularly difficult ****** but many fans did find it quite frustrating due to the arena's colossal size and the boss essentially teleporting around the arena. A lot of time is therefore spent running after the Elden ****** instead of actually fighting it. **** YOU CAN SUMMON TORRENT DURING THE ELDEN ****** BOSS ****** NOW [Hidden Content] — 𓆣 (@LadyRanni) June 20, 2024 "I just saw someone beat the Elden ****** with a cheat engine enabling the use of your horse Torrent during the ******, and this was absolutely the way the boss was meant to be played," wrote X/Twitter user @velvetbnuuy earlier in June. "This is one of the biggest design fumbles in an otherwise amazing game I can think of." As the fan notes, many mods have been created to allow Elden Ring players to summon Torrent in the ******, and YouTube videos showcasing the modded battle in action have thousands of views. "I got tired of Chase the Boss Simulator 2022 towards the end," wrote GameFAQs user OnyxZephyr333. "I'm here to ****** you. Not watch my character run for a minute while you do a move then roll, teleport, or slither away." How do you think having access to Torrent would affect your impression of the Elden ****** boss ******? — Zullie (@ZullieTheWitch) October 10, 2022 X/Twitter user @ZullieTheWitch asked their followers how Torrent would affect the ******, and of 27,771 responses, 66.2% said Torrent would improve things. Needless to say, many players wanted FromSoftware to allow Torrent in the ******, and the Elden Ring community has erupted in excitement about today's change. "Oh my ****, thank you Miyazaki," said one Reddit user, referencing Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki. "We can finally summon Torrent for the Elden ******." "Torrent buddy we made it," said someone in the replies. The update makes this and several other changes ahead of Shadow of the Erdtree's launch tomorrow, June 21. Just like previous FromSoftware games Dark Souls and Bloodborne, however, accessing the DLC isn't as simple as selecting it on a menu, as players must tick off a handful of obscure feats beforehand, including beating an optional boss. IGN's guide on how to prepare for the Shadow of Erdtree is fully up to date with everything you need, however, and make sure to check out our Elden Ring interactive map to ensure you're not missing any important collectibles. You can also catch up on IGN's "How Long to Beat" for Shadow of the Erdtree and ***** some time ahead of its imminent release by reading our extensive 10/10 review. "Like the base game did before it, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree raises the bar for single player expansions," we said. "It takes everything that made the base game such a landmark RPG, condenses it into a relatively compact 20-25 hour campaign, and provides fantastic new challenges for heavily invested fans to chew on." 11. Chances are you've either started watching House of the Dragon season 2 or are planning to do so. We can already say things are looking bleak for all the backstabbing royals involved, and of course, problematic ******* encounters continue to be a recurring thing. But it seems that we won't be seeing some of the messier stuff that was shot. The key cast members of the first Game of Thrones spinoff series have been out there doing interviews and big promotional bits for weeks now, and Olivia Cooke's in-depth chat with Elle might be one of the meatiest pieces on the subject you can read right now. While the entire interview isn't centered on the Game of Thrones prequel, it understandably shapes most of it. About the pressure of tackling the first-ever GoT spinoff series, Cooke said: "There was a pressure [in] doing a new offshoot of the Game of Thrones world, and really desperately wanting it to be well-received because we’d worked so hard on it." Following the backlash to the last season of the main series back in 2019, anyone would have been nervous going into such an important franchise and toying with its past. 14. Original Fallout co-creator Tim Cain has revealed that he played a role in the events that led to the cancellation of Fallout Van Buren, the codename for the original version of Fallout 3 which was in development at Interplay-owned ****** Isle Studios in the early 2000s. If you need a refresher, this took place back in 2002/2003, a good few years before Bethesda bought the IP and went on to make the Fallout 3 we actually ended up getting. Cain had actually left Interplay at the point the game was being developed, having departed to start a studio called Troika Games after working on the first two Fallout games. Now, in a video on his YouTube channel, (thanks, IGN) Cain has revealed that in the middle of 2003, an unnamed Interplay vice president asked him to come and play the current prototype of Van Buren. 19. “The Republic Of Pirates was meant to be different…” laments the narration in the opening of the seafaring resource-chain-em-up strategy, out today with a demo on Steam at time of writing. 21. Former Dragon Age executive producer and current Veilguard consultant Mark Darrah has said the upcoming game is the first in the series where the combat is legitimately fun. Speaking to Game Informer, Darrah admitted the combat in previous Dragon Age games wasn’t great, but insisted the combat in Veilguard is up to scratch. "What I see in Veilguard is a game that finally bridges the gap," Darrah said. "Uncharitably, previous Dragon Age games got to the realm of 'combat wasn't too bad.' In this game, the combat's actually fun, but it does keep that thread that's always been there. You have the focus on Rook, on your character, but still have that control and character coming into the combat experience from the other people in your party." Uncharitably, previous Dragon Age games got to the realm of 'combat wasn't too bad.' The combat in Veilguard has been a hot topic of discussion ever since the game’s reveal earlier this month. As IGN said in our Veilguard preview, this is more of an action game than any previous entry in the fantasy RPG series. “The battle system reduces the party size from four to three and in so doing becomes more action forward than ever,” we said. Combat revolves around dodging, countering, and using risk-reward charge attacks designed to break ****** armor layers. Much of the strategy comes from the ability wheel, which stops the action either by tapping or holding the shoulder button and lets you issue orders. Companions can be kitted out as support units and healers, too. “The combat system is an interesting challenge going into the fourth iteration of this game because as you know, every Dragon Age has reinvented combat to some degree,” director Corinne Busche told IGN. “Of course, pause and play strategy is always the backbone of it. But what that means is that, in addition to fans of all three prior games and welcoming in an entirely new generation of fans, we've got a pretty diverse player base to accommodate to.” Veilguard launches 10 years after the last game in the series, Inquisition, came out, and 15 years after the first game, Origins. Earlier this month BioWare fully revealed Veilguard alongside its new name, with new info on the character creator and an extended look at gameplay. As part of our Summer Game Fest coverage, we were able to learn a lot about how The Veilguard will handle romance and player choice. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is currently slated to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC in fall 2024. Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. 22. Danganronpa writer Kazutaka Kodaka's new studio had to take out a loan to fund its next big game, The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, which was revealed during June 2024's Nintendo Direct. Speaking to Famitsu and translated by Automaton, Kodaka said his team at Too Kyo Games was "risking their lives" for the game due to financial and mental pressure, though a publishing partner has since been secured in Aniplex. Development started off rocky, however, after a deal with an initial publisher fell through after "numerous difficulties." Work on The Hundred Line was then restarted but what began as an "indie scale game" quickly grew and demanded more funds. "We decided to take the plunge and take out a loan," Kodaka said, a move which is unusual for game developers who are traditionally funded by publishers. Aniplex eventually came through for Too Kyo Games though, and Media Vision and Jet Studio joined as co-developers. "It was tough both financially and mentally, but I may never have another opportunity to put this much effort into a project,” Kodaka said. The Hundred Line puts fans of Danganronpa in a similar setting: a hellish high school full of despair. They take on the role of Takumi Sumino, who lived an unremarkable life until he was forced to transfer to the Last Defense Academy. We decided to take the plunge and take out a loan. Players must protect the school from mysterious enemies known as School Invaders for 100 days through tactical role-playing combat and delve into the "enigmatic truth of the school" alongside 15 of his companions, each looking to reclaim their lost everyday lives. The Nintendo Direct was full of other major games too, with a brand new Zelda announced alongside Mario & Luigi: Brotherhood. The show ended with the re-reveal of Metroid Prime 4, now subtitled Beyond, seven years after it was first announced. Read about every announcement, big and small, in our Everything Announced article. Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He'll talk about The Witcher all day.
