  1. Did you know that AMD's old Zen 3 CPUs released back in 2019 are actually faster for gaming than Intel's latest Raptor Lake architecture? It's true, and AMD has the graphs to prove it. Read Entire Article View the full article
  2. “The Republic Of Pirates was meant to be different…” laments the narration in the opening of the seafaring resource-chain-em-up strategy, out today with a demo on Steam at time of writing. This made me laugh, in the same way someone saying “the ******** of *********City was deeply sobering” might. Yes, I know the pirate republic was a real thing, ended not by the infighting and treachery shown here, but by the British. I will avoid easy gags about Plundering Loisences and instead lightly recommend the demo to you. It’s got enough meat on its bones for a less brainwidth-hogging gulp of city building, assuming you like the pirate theme enough. Spy the trailer I’ve shoved in a dangling cage below, as a warning to others who might trespass around this RPS-pelago. Read more View the full article
  3. We've only got to wait a few hours until the floodgates finally open and players are let into Elden Ring's new DLC Shadow of the Erdtree. But it's not as simple as stepping into the new map; players first need to defeat the terrifying Mohg, Lord of Blood, which is easier said than done, considering you need to be at least level 100-110. As time begins to run out for those wishing to start the DLC as soon as it releases, the community is banding together and helping each other defeat The Omen... Read more.View the full article
  4. Former Dragon Age executive producer and current Veilguard consultant Mark Darrah has said the upcoming game is the first in the series where the combat is legitimately fun. Speaking to Game Informer, Darrah admitted the combat in previous Dragon Age games wasn’t great, but insisted the combat in Veilguard is up to scratch. "What I see in Veilguard is a game that finally bridges the gap," Darrah said. "Uncharitably, previous Dragon Age games got to the realm of 'combat wasn't too bad.' In this game, the combat's actually fun, but it does keep that thread that's always been there. You have the focus on Rook, on your character, but still have that control and character coming into the combat experience from the other people in your party." Uncharitably, previous Dragon Age games got to the realm of 'combat wasn't too bad.' The combat in Veilguard has been a hot topic of discussion ever since the game’s reveal earlier this month. As IGN said in our Veilguard preview, this is more of an action game than any previous entry in the fantasy RPG series. “The battle system reduces the party size from four to three and in so doing becomes more action forward than ever,” we said. Combat revolves around dodging, countering, and using risk-reward charge attacks designed to break ****** armor layers. Much of the strategy comes from the ability wheel, which stops the action either by tapping or holding the shoulder button and lets you issue orders. Companions can be kitted out as support units and healers, too. “The combat system is an interesting challenge going into the fourth iteration of this game because as you know, every Dragon Age has reinvented combat to some degree,” director Corinne Busche told IGN. “Of course, pause and play strategy is always the backbone of it. But what that means is that, in addition to fans of all three prior games and welcoming in an entirely new generation of fans, we've got a pretty diverse player base to accommodate to.” Veilguard launches 10 years after the last game in the series, Inquisition, came out, and 15 years after the first game, Origins. Earlier this month BioWare fully revealed Veilguard alongside its new name, with new info on the character creator and an extended look at gameplay. As part of our Summer Game Fest coverage, we were able to learn a lot about how The Veilguard will handle romance and player choice. Dragon Age: The Veilguard is currently slated to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC in fall 2024. Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. 5. Danganronpa writer Kazutaka Kodaka's new studio had to take out a loan to fund its next big game, The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, which was revealed during June 2024's Nintendo Direct. Speaking to Famitsu and translated by Automaton, Kodaka said his team at Too Kyo Games was "risking their lives" for the game due to financial and mental pressure, though a publishing partner has since been secured in Aniplex. Development started off rocky, however, after a deal with an initial publisher fell through after "numerous difficulties." Work on The Hundred Line was then restarted but what began as an "indie scale game" quickly grew and demanded more funds. "We decided to take the plunge and take out a loan," Kodaka said, a move which is unusual for game developers who are traditionally funded by publishers. Aniplex eventually came through for Too Kyo Games though, and Media Vision and Jet Studio joined as co-developers. "It was tough both financially and mentally, but I may never have another opportunity to put this much effort into a project,” Kodaka said. The Hundred Line puts fans of Danganronpa in a similar setting: a hellish high school full of despair. They take on the role of Takumi Sumino, who lived an unremarkable life until he was forced to transfer to the Last Defense Academy. We decided to take the plunge and take out a loan. Players must protect the school from mysterious enemies known as School Invaders for 100 days through tactical role-playing combat and delve into the "enigmatic truth of the school" alongside 15 of his companions, each looking to reclaim their lost everyday lives. The Nintendo Direct was full of other major games too, with a brand new Zelda announced alongside Mario & Luigi: Brotherhood. The show ended with the re-reveal of Metroid Prime 4, now subtitled Beyond, seven years after it was first announced. Read about every announcement, big and small, in our Everything Announced article. Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He'll talk about The Witcher all day. 10. PlayStation is sometimes left out of the loop for new releases. But it came as a shock when the digital edition of one of the most popular board games came out everywhere except PS4 and PS5. Thankfully, a remedy is here—a PlayStation port for Wingspan is coming soon. The award-winning board game features dozens of bird cards placed in rows with others that players collect throughout the game. Each round, the birds trigger to generate their respective player’s resources in a race to collect as many points as possible. The birds gain additional effects when placed in habitats they like or with like-minded mallards that bring them synergies. Lauded for its cozy style but occasionally criticized for its somewhat complicated bookkeeping, Wingspan was a shoo-in for a digital edition to capitalize on its rampant success—and maybe help make point collection less tedious. 11. The sinking ******* that comes of having no fixed identity and being trapped alone thousands of metres beneath the ocean has been compacted into the soft, comforting (?) form of a plushie. Frictional Games, the creators of first-person horror game Soma, launched the soft toy depiction of the game's protagonist Simon on Makeship, aka Kickstarter for plushies. Normally, we don't report on merch - why would we? - but there is something deeply and darkly funny about making a fleece-coated fuzzy huggy wuggy about the psychologically harrowing experience of being forgotten under the sea. Then again, Frictional Games are not the first to do this sort of thing. Read more View the full article

  13. Redfall has started to roll out refunds for the $100 ***** Back edition, which was supposed to include DLC that never got released, as development and support for the game comes to an end. Redfall is a vampire-themed first-person co-op shooter developed by Arcane Studios Austin and published by Bethesda in May 2023. Since its launch, the game has received significant backlash and negative reviews from players and critics. Despite the promising setting, the game flopped largely because of its buggy release, which accounts for its small player base. View the full article
  14. Revenue estimates indicate that Genshin Impact might soon be overtaken by Wuthering Waves in monthly revenue as Koru Games gacha-style RPG gains increasing popularity. The rivalry between the two games began with the announcement of Wuthering Waves, which many initially dismissed as a mere imitation of Genshin Impact. However, the competition intensified when Wuthering Waves topped the download charts in over 100 countries at launch and became one of the most-watched games on Twitch, all while Genshin Impact grappled to retain its player base. 16. Way back in 2004, that terrible year where I swore off video games entirely to focus on my university studies, developers 1C SeaWolf announced Captain Blood, a piratical action game loosely based on Rafael Sabatini's adventure novels, in which a crew of 17th century freebooters set forth across the Spanish Main to rescue a magistrate's daughter from assorted bilge-drinking scallywags. Early footage painted the portrait of a spirited 3D hack-and-slasher featuring much buckling of swashes, heaving of hos and jollying of rogers. Jim Rossignol (RPS in peace) was cautiously enthused when he played Captain Blood in 2008. "It was actually pretty fun - especially the arcade boat ********* between speedy galleons - but I'm not exactly holding out for a masterpiece," he wrote. Alas, Captain Blood's ship struck a reef in the shape of unspecified publishing disputes, and sank beneath the waves after one last defiant preview showing in 2010. Now, the game has risen from the depths Flying Dutchman-style thanks to new developers Seawolf Studio and General Arcade and publisher SNEG Ltd. It'll finally launch on PC later this year. 17. Fallout creator Tim Cain has for the first time revealed his role in the cancelation of Interplay’s Van Buren, the codename for what was intended to be the original Fallout 3. Van Buren was in development at Interplay-owned ****** Isle Studios in the early 2000s, but was canceled amid significant financial problems at the company. Cain, who worked on the first two, much-loved Fallout games in the mid-to late 90s before leaving Interplay to start a new studio called Troika Games, has now revealed the role he played in the cancelation of Van Buren as part of his ongoing YouTube series focused on video game development. As we walked out he basically explained any answer over six months was going to result in him having to cancel it. Cain revealed that in the middle of 2003, an unnamed Interplay vice president asked him to play the Van Buren prototype, saying: “I don’t think they can get it done, so I’m just going to cancel it. But if you look over it and give me an estimate there’s a chance I wouldn’t cancel it.” Cain said he played the prototype for two hours and asked the development team a number of questions before delivering his verdict to the vice president. “I said, ‘I’m convinced in 18 months you could have a really good game shipped.’ And he said, ‘huh, could it be done any faster?’ And I was like, 'oh, ******, I’ve said too long.' I said, ‘well, even if you did a ****** march crunch I don’t think you could do it faster than 12, and then you’d be shipping something that was unbalanced and buggy, and the team would be destroyed. So I don’t recommend that.’ “And he said, ‘ok, thanks.’ As we walked out he basically explained any answer over six months was going to result in him having to cancel it, meaning the answer I just gave got the game canceled. But he was going to cancel it anyway. He thought it couldn’t be done in six months, and I just confirmed that to him.” According to Cain, the cancelation of Van Buren was, ultimately, about money. Interplay’s dire financial situation meant it simply did not have enough cash to fund more than six months of further development, so Van Buren was canceled. Interplay went on to close down ****** Isle Studios and cut its entire staff. The company released Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel in 2004 for the Xbox and PlayStation 2, but it was not enough. That same year, Interplay announced a licensing deal with The Elder Scrolls developer Bethesda for future Fallout games, and in 2007, Interplay sold the Fallout IP to Bethesda outright, and the rest is history. 18. Inside Out 2 has quickly become the box office behemoth that Disney was desperately looking for this year (with Deadpool & Wolverine likely wowing next month too). This may accelerate franchise-building plans around the IP, and Disney and Pixar are probably very thankful they were already developing an Inside Out series for Disney Plus that will arrive next year. Peter Docter, Pixar's current Chief Creative Officer, recently talked to Entertainment Weekly (via Deadline) about the sequel, Pixar's plans for the future, and what to expect from the aforementioned Disney Plus show. Surprisingly enough, it appears work on it has already concluded. "We have finished. It’s coming out next spring. I’m not sure that there’s been a specific release date," he stated. The fact he knows nothing about the potential release window is less surprising, since Disney typically keeps those close to its chest as the people in charge try to come up with a strong release schedule for everything coming from every studio under the company's umbrella. 19. Director of Tekken Katsuhiro Harada has spilled the beans on the creation of one of Tekken's most beloved costumes, including internal discussions around the concept and whether or not it would be understood by overseas players. This information came via Twitter, in response to a cosplay of King's beloved alternative Tekken 3 costume. This costume features the wrestler in a grey mask, with a t-shirt, dark blue bottoms, and white sneakers. Harada explained the background of its design in a lengthy post. "This costume started with my concept in the 90's that 2P should wear the Armor King mask and be a Heel wrestler. Then... The artist assigned to the project uploaded texture data with the kanji for "悪 (Heel / Evil / Villain)" as a joke at first. One day, when I launched the development test build and saw "Evil" written on the back of the KING, I laughed out loud." Read more View the full article

In order to commemorate us having reached this point, FromSoft's done what all developers do when they want to send hype into overdrive - release a final trailer. Yup, because that's what we all needed for a DLC that's [Hidden Content]. On the plus side, if you've forgotten or haven't been able to book in any time off to let you delve right in without worrying about keeping your sleep schedule intact, it is something to watch on your lunch break as you count down the hours until you can head home and get started. The launch trailer, which you can watch below, is just over three minuites long, meaning that if you get an hour for lunch and have a sandwich right next to your moutch the moment that time begins, you could probably watch it something in the region of 18 times back-to-back before you're back on the clock. That's rough maths, and rather naively assumes you don't run into any YouTube adverts, but you get the gist. Read more View the full article

  25. Sony’s $200 PlayStation Portal has never been a device that fully made sense. The handheld is specifically designed so players can stream games from their PS5 consoles to it. It doesn’t function without a console, and only really helps you take your games to bed while leaving the TV off - or for someone else to watch something on it. As much of a limited use as that is, PS Portal was even more limited by its own software than people initially realised. The big omission was the handheld’s lack of any ability to deal with public Wi-Fi networks, such as those found at hotels and cafes. PS Portal simply couldn’t work with the sign-in portals that require you to enter a room number and so on, so anyone who took it out of their home needed to connect it to a hotspot from their phone or laptop. This all changes today. Read more View the full article For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
