  1. It's been a good couple of years for soulslikes. Both ***** of P and ****** Myth Wukong have continued to demonstrate just how far you can push this formula, adding smart new ideas, but transposing the fundamentals to an entirely new setting and mood. It's honestly the thing I love the most about this genre; how you can take this framework that players understand and use it as a vehicle to explore a new setting or mythology... 2. It is undeniable that ****** Myth: Wukong draws heavily on classical literature for its lore, being based on the ******** tale Journey to the West. And for me, although I have never read the original novel, this means that playing the game has still taught me plenty about it. The lore of ****** Myth: Wukong is closely intertwined with the original story, to the point that it arguably serves as a ********* to learning about Journey to the Wests narrative. 14. According to a former Bethesda developer, Starfield almost had a management system. It was cut due to scheduling conflicts, but the mining resources and shipbuilding mechanics were originally going to link up. Starfield would have become a "strategy game/resource management game" on top of an RPG, as you'd need to send materials to factories to build spaceships. I love the sound of this, but fully understand why it had to be cut. Starfield is a huge game, so sometimes you've got to decide what to keep, and what to throw away. Read the rest of the story... 18. As I’m sure as is the curse of anyone who’s watched the entirety of Peep Show multiple times, I cannot read the name ‘Marko’ without hearing it in a nasally *********** accent, inquiring about ********. This is probably a disservice to the hero of colourful metroidvania Marko: Beyond Brave, who a quick goog tells me may be based on Krali Marko - a popular character in the folklore of Studio Mechka’s native Bulgaria. Folk hero or not, Marko certainly has some heroic facial hair: his moustache floweth so bountifully that it can’t be contained in his character portrait. Extremely powerful of him. 19. Mortal Kombat 1 developer NetherRealm has released the launch trailer for expansion Khaos Reigns that includes a first look at DLC character Ghostface. Ghostface makes a guest appearance in the gory fighting game fresh from the Scream film franchise, and the character's Fatality in Mortal Kombat 1 is a direct reference to those movies, specifically 2023's Scream 6 with its multiple Ghostface killers. In the Fatality, we see two Ghostface killers work together to tear poor Sub-Zero apart in a gruesome co-op stab. It’s fitting for Mortal Kombat, and certainly in keeping with the Scream franchise. Mortal Kombat 1 Ghostface Fatality #MK1 #MortalKombat1 [Hidden Content] — thethiny (@thethiny) September 18, 2024 Elsewhere, we get a good look at Noob Saibot’s bone-crunching Animality (Animalities are new for Mortal Kombat 1), and it’s a direct reference to the character’s Fatality in Mortal Kombat 9. Noob Saibot's Animality is 1:1 his MK9 Fatality and I LOVE it! The animations are the same frame by frame, with only the speed being altered. Here's the side-by-side sync'd video!#MK1 #MortalKombat1 [Hidden Content] — thethiny (@thethiny) September 18, 2024 NetherRealm likes to have fun with references via its Fatalities and other finishers. Fellow DLC character Sektor, for example, has a Fatality that references Marvel’s Iron Man. And finally, we see the four new character skins available as a bonus for those who pre-order Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, including Wedding Scorpion, Empress Mileena, and klassic Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 versions of Sub-Zero and Noob Saibot. Khaos Reigns hits Mortal Kombat 1 after four million sales since launching in September 2023. The expansion adds new story mode chapters available from September 24, along with Kombat Pack 2, which itself includes six new DLC characters: Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot (available on September 24), and guest fighters Ghostface (Scream franchise), T-1000 (Terminator 2: Judgement Day), and Conan the Barbarian (post-launch release timing to be announced at a later date). Animalities are part of a free update for all Mortal Kombat 1 owners set to go live alongside Khaos Reigns on September 24. Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100.
