  1. After over a decade, developer Obsidian Entertainment has added a highly-requested feature to the original Pillars of Eternity, and it changes the CRPG in more ways than one. A new turn-based mode is now available in Pillars of Eternity, giving players the option to play the game like a traditional CRPG. Instead of the non-stop, real-time action that takes place in the vanilla version of the game, you can slow things down and play with more strategy and at a tactical pace. Players were previously able to play a beta version of the turn-based mode through Steam, but Obsidian has now made it available for everyone. In addition to adding turn-based combat, there's a new update with a long list of patch notes to accommodate the mode. Fortunately, the update doesn't mess with any of your existing save files. You can even hop into an old playthrough and simply toggle on turn-based combat, allowing you to pick up where you left off in Pillars of Eternity. Or, you could start an entirely new playthrough with turn-based combat, letting you experience the whole game with the mode. [Hidden Content] In any case, Pillars of Eternity's turn-based mode works a little differently than you might expect. If you're an avid Pillars fan, then you might have already experienced turn-based combat in the franchise, as it's been available in Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire for several years. While some of the same turn-based mechanics are in place from Deadfire's mode, there are a lot of changes this time around. For starters, Pillars of Eternity's turn-based mode limits you to a single action per turn. Unlike Baldur's Gate or Solasta, you can't perform multiple actions every turn using available Action Points, which both limits and expands the strategy for certain combat situations. However, Pillars does allow you to move your characters quite a lot, and some of your characters can take multiple turns in a single round. This is largely based on a character's "recovery" stat, which is determined by the armor they have equipped. Overall, if you're expecting the turn-based mode to act exactly like any other CRPG you've played in the past, you're in for a surprise. After playing for a few hours, Pillars of Eternity with turn-based enabled feels like a completely different game to me. Your moves have to be deeply rooted in strategy, and you can't brute force your way through an irritating enemy anymore. Also, Obsidian has made a number of noticeable changes to the core game. You'll see UI alterations, bug fixes, and changes to the control scheme to make it feel smoother during turn-based combat. As far as updates to decade-old games go, this one in Pillars of Eternity feels as substantial as a DLC expansion. 7. While The Elder Scrolls and The Witcher are often seen as the benchmark of Western role-playing games, the Gothic series from former developer Piranha Bytes is also worthy of recognition within the upper echelon of the subgenre. The original Gothic and its sequels became cult classics for the scale of player choice and freeform, open-ended exploration within their dark-fantasy setting, which has even inspired developers at CD Projekt Red and Warhorse Studios in their RPGs. With the upcoming remake of Gothic 1, developer Alkimia Interactive is giving the original game a reappraisal not only to showcase its lasting strengths but also to expand the world and its community of characters to create a more satisfying, consequence-driven setting. We were able to get an exclusive first look at a brand new quest line added in the Gothic remake, along with seeing just how much of an upgrade the remake aims to give the classic dark-fantasy RPG. The remake of Gothic aims to revitalize the dark-fantasy RPG's setting, which centers on the conflict brewing within a mining colony occupied by prisoners. Once a key mining operation to help humanity in their war with the Orcs, a magic ritual intended to seal the colony goes awry, resulting in a barrier covering the entire region. Players take on the role of a nameless hero tasked with finding one of the few magic users inside the sealed-off colony. As the Hero navigates the world that the prisoners have made within the colony, they'll pick up new skills, uncover ways to take down opposing groups, and potentially find a way to destroy the barrier sealing the colony. The original Gothic was essentially a dark-fantasy spin on John Carpenter's Escape from New York. The original Gothic was essentially a dark-fantasy spin on John Carpenter's Escape from New York, resulting in a notably darker take on a role-playing game in 2001. But the hook that really made Gothic a seminal RPG was its approach to open-world gameplay, which, in 2001, was still finding its footing. Essentially, you're tasked with uncovering the mystery behind the barrier, however you see fit, all while being trapped within a focused location that has various characters with conflicting agendas and varying degrees of hostility depending on where your allegiance lies. The remake does well to maintain the original's strengths in player choice and the web of characters with their own agendas, all while making noticeable upgrades to storytelling that creates better context to deepen that setting. The remake largely sticks to the original's structure and style, and the developers put a particular focus on upgrading the foundations and scale of the core game. In that sense, the developers are not going for a massive reimagining. It's really more about remaking Gothic 1 with modern visual and gameplay flourishes that new and returning players can appreciate. Generally, the upgrades in visual style, gameplay, and storytelling really do wonders to flesh out the dark-fantasy world of Gothic further, enhancing the sense of navigating a precarious setting that can fall into chaos at any moment. However, I couldn't help but feel that the remake's scope felt more like a souped-up 2000s PC or original-Xbox-era game, which sometimes felt a bit overly modest. Still, it does aim to capture the tone and vibe of Gothic, which it succeeds well at so far. Gothic also has a particularly unique approach to character growth, which is often decided by what your playstyle is and which side you landed with to receive training. It's all based on choices you make throughout the game, and siding with one faction – such as the Brotherhood of the Sleeper, who worship an ancient god they believe is responsible for the barrier – will close you off from others and their skills. Along with learning basic combat and fighting styles, you can also figure out how to scale walls, forge new gear, and pick up magical spells that allow for mind-control and transformation. The consequences of these choices as you navigate the colony can result in some drastically different outcomes for quests and character interactions. It all ties into the hard-edged approach of classic Gothic, which the remake is aiming to retain for the most part. There are, of course, very welcome changes to combat, navigation, and tracking of key quests and a new glossary to make this adventure more manageable. The core action still retains the look and clunky flow of early-2000’s action-RPG combat, which certainly has an appeal. But it feels easier to grasp this time around, thanks to enhanced movement, lock-on, and modern combat physics. However, you can still easily find yourself in a bad spot by making some ill-advised decisions or picking fights with those who can easily overpower you. That said, if certain players want to take on a more daring approach and cut through the island and nearly every inhabitant, the developers stated that you can do that as well. In our exclusive footage, we got to see a new quest line added in for the remake, focusing on the Hero helping the water mage Myxir – a familiar character from the sequels. The remake gives Myxir a new storyline in the first entry, in which the Hero helps him acquire new magic on the coast near the colony. It's a new addition that not only expands the setting's scope but also showcases the deeper lore running throughout the series. But where the remake aims to leave a ******* mark is in the expanded storytelling and characterization of the colony's inhabitants. According to Reinhard Pollice, the studio head of Alkimia Interactive, one of the critical upgrades they wanted was to add more context and character depth for all supporting NPCs. In addition to nearly every character having their own daily routines and agendas, the added storytelling does more to make different characters feel less one-dimensional and to further a sense of moral ambiguity in Gothic. This, in turn, expands opportunities for player choice and the sense of consequence within the story. An especially welcome change happening with the remake is the more respectful representation of female characters. A controversial aspect of the 2001 game was the presence of enslaved women in the colony, who were background characters and non-interactable. But in the remake, female characters are more developed, with agency, which Hero can learn more about and potentially form bonds with. The developers were insistent that this was a necessary change, not only to remove some distasteful aspects of the original but also to add more nuance to the colony's setting and to the especially vulnerable characters left to the fringes. "In one of our trailers, we showed that you can now interact with women in the game, and, you know, it's a prison colony, and in the 2001 game, the women were slaves and you couldn't interact with them," said Pollice. "We were like, ‘Yeah, we want to give it more depth and not do that again.’ So we've added more female characters that have different roles within this colony – but they're not all over the place, like running shops and inns, because it's still a hostile, prison colony that's lawless and is more dangerous for them. But we definitely wanted to add more of this multidimensional aspect to the characters and to this setting. But some of the fans online were like, ‘No, they should just be slaves,’ but we're like, ‘Yeah, no, just play the game and see what we are doing with it.’" Now, you can actually do more to make some inroads with the Orc tribe by learning the Orcish language, which can open up new ways to progress the main story and meet new characters. Another welcome addition to the remake is the expansion of the Orc faction. In the original game, they were a largely one-dimensional antagonist with very limited opportunities for diplomacy outside of specific quests. But now, you can actually do more to make some inroads with the Orc tribe by learning the Orcish language, which can open up new ways to progress the main story and meet new characters. This is a great upgrade because it further aligns with Gothic's approach to navigating by using every outlet and connection you have to accomplish your goals. There's often a tricky balance with examining what to re-examine and what to keep when remaking games, but the Gothic 1 Remake from Alkimia Interactive certainly looks to give the original series a much needed reappraisal in the right ways. Along with leaning even further into the stories that are made with every choice, it's making some commendable updates for storytelling and removing some unsavory aspects of the 2001 version. And so far, Gothic 1 Remake has the makings for a worthy reinvention of a classic RPG series. Alessandro Fillari is a longtime games media professional. 15. People of Note is soaked in whimsy, full of endless quips and in-jokes about songs, musicians, and the art of music itself. As a turn-based RPG, it's serviceable, but it feels lacking in areas where fans of the genre may be hoping for more. Regardless of its shortcomings, People of Note is a fun, musical-based romp through a cute adventure that will have you laughing and battling while gaining an appreciation for music as an art form and how it can help form the strongest bonds. It's a passion project that's been made by music nerds for music nerds, with a lot of love for RPGs of the past sprinkled in. Sing it, girl Screenshot by Destructoid People of Note is set in a colorful, musical world called… Note. And so, it truly is a game about the People of Note. Get it? (Get used to the puns if you end up trying the game.) Note's countries are divided and separated, each nation defined by its own style of music, with nary a collaboration to be found. Until Cadence comes along to change it all. Cadence, the main character, is a talented young woman with dreams of becoming a massive pop star by winning her country's reality music competition. Cadence hails from the pop music-based nation of Chordia, but she needs help on her quest to stardom, and so she goes out into the world to help finish her one big song by learning about different types of music, and more importantly, herself. Along the way, Cadence meets and recruits new band members from different countries and their corresponding genres and sounds: a surly old rocker named Fret, a timid EDM DJ named Synthia, and a regal rapper named Vox. Together, they discover a wider world-threatening plot along the way as they group up to bond and mash up their styles of sound to create new music while battling all sorts of quirky foes. People of Note's plot ends up leaning into JRPG tropes about powerful artifacts and the creation of the world itself, but exploring the lands of Note and learning its lore while leveling up is a good time because every single inch of the game is plastered with music puns to keep everything light. For example, you can **** accordion-shaped corgi puppies (called Accorgions), or battle with the deer-like Stagpipe or the lycan Lyrewolf, while equipping the Linkin Parka armor and Simon Cowl accessory to buff your stats. Yep. Every inch. These jokes range from genuinely funny to eye-rolling to cringy, so if you're easily annoyed by non-stop puns and silly humor, you may be put off. But I feel like musicians and music fans who know the ins and outs of the art will really appreciate what's on display. Screenshot by Destructoid Learning to collaborate to redefine their songs and sounds while becoming friends along the way is the heart and soul of People of Note, inspired by real life's musical effect of how songs and artists can help bring people together from all walks of life. I've lived it myself, meeting many friends and even the love of my life because of similar music tastes. We haven't had to save the world like Cadence and co. (yet) but the point still stands. Cadence's journey from wannabe-celebrity to learning about the powers of collaboration and music itself makes the game worth playing for its 12-to-16-hour runtime, which feels a bit short for the genre. But that also makes it more easily digestible, too. And stay in tune Screenshot by Destructoid Inspired by classics in the genre like Final Fantasy 9 and 10, Chrono Cross, and The World Ends With You, People of Note features turn-based battles that take place during turns called Stanzas (did I mention every inch?). Attacks also feature QTE-like timed button presses to maximize effectiveness, à la Expedition 33, but way simpler. The Stanzas at the bottom of the screen dictate each turn and the order of events, helping you plan your strategy. You can see what the enemy will do and how many turns you have to prepare for it. Unfortunately, the best strategy is often to try to take the enemy out as fast as possible before the enrage-like Crescendo mechanic kicks in during boss fights. (Every inch.) If the boss can trigger Crescendo, they get a massive buff to their abilities and often end up just taking you out. And while you can use a Rest command to save up points to use your own powerful abilities, battle strategy often ends up degrading into attacking as fast as possible to survive encounters. Within several dungeon-like areas where you collect Vinyls as currency to earn new abilities, a number of environmental puzzles will stop you in your tracks until you solve them. I found these to be more annoying than anything, often stunting the game's pace. Presentation-wise, People of Note has a charming art style that delivers the story mostly through 2D art and some really solid voice acting from a talented cast. The biggest moments of the plot culminate in bombastic musical numbers where the characters sing about their goals, troubles, and dreams (did I mention this was a musical game?): These are great and fully performed by the voice actors and singers who put in wonderful performances, but few and far between, as most of the game's plot is presented through the 2D sprites speaking to each other. Note has some very cool areas to explore, as each country has its own personality to go along with its genre. The NPCs found there have some funny, silent dialogue to experience, and there are minor mini-quests to take on and shops to get upgrades from, but there isn't a ton to do in the world like you'd expect from an RPG. Screenshot by Destructoid I also wish there was a bit more meat to People of Note's bones, especially when compared to the games it was inspired by. There's a handful of side quests and extras to do along the way for a few extra hours of fun, but the game is quite linear, and also pretty quickly finished on its normal difficulty level. Finding any specific one is rather tough, and there are also certain fish that are extra difficult to locate, such as the uncommon Kilima Grayling. This fish is a great gift, essential for cooking, and needed for quite a few missions, so you'll find yourself hunting for it pretty often. It's a fairly tough one to find at first, but once you know where to look and what needs to be done to get it, you'll have a much easier time. Here’s how to find and catch a Kilima Grayling in Palia. Table of contentsKilima Grayling locations in PaliaHow to get a Kilima Grayling in PaliaBest time to catch Kilima Grayling in PaliaKilima Grayling locations in Palia Screenshot and remix by Destructoid As the name of this fish hints, the Kilima Grayling fish is native to the Kilima Valley area. Specifically, it can be found in all rivers throughout this area. There are lots of different rivers you can check for it, including the one located north of Phoenix Falls, the one that's situated north of Whispering Banks, the one that starts up by Mirror Fields and runs down to the Mayor's Estate, and the one that's both above and below Maji’s Hollow. When fishing at any of these spots, there's a chance you'll catch any type of river fish, which unfortunately means there's no way to guarantee you encounter one. Finding a Kilima Grayling mostly comes down to random luck and chance. How to get a Kilima Grayling in Palia You have a shot at getting a Kilima Grayling by fishing in any river around Kilima Valley, but you can increase your chances of encountering one by using Glow Worm bait. There are a few different ways to get your hands on this premium bait: Can be purchased from the Fishing Guild once you've reached fishing level 10. The exchange rate is 10 Fishing Medals for 20 Glow Worms. Can be made using a Glow Worm Farm. The recipe for this machine can be purchased from Einar for 2,000 Gold after you reach fishing level seven. Can sometimes be granted as a reward from a Rummage Pile. Can sometimes be received from Zeki's Wondrous Machine. Screenshot by Destructoid Fishing is by far the most efficient and reliable way to obtain a Kilima Grayling. There is also a chance, though, that you may be granted one when collecting loot from a Boovar at your ranch. This animal grants random fish from around Kilima as a prize, so there's no way to know what it'll give you, which is why it's not a reliable way of obtaining a Kilima Grayling. Best time to catch Kilima Grayling in Palia Many fish can only be caught during specific timeframes, but the Kilima Grayling doesn't have a varied schedule. Instead, this fish is available to catch anytime in any river as long as you're fishing for it within Kilima Valley. While you're already hard at work fishing, you might want to learn how to find and catch a Stickleback, too. And as you explore, be sure to keep an eye out for Red Eggs, Yellow Eggs, Green Eggs, and Blue Eggs, which are tough to find but essential for filling out the Bulletin Board.
