The Steam Winter ***** is upon us, that part of the year when our Lord and savior Gaben is most generous and provides us with the hottest (or coldest?) deals. Of course, as the prices freeze over and collapse into bits and pieces, it can be difficult to make the right choice. I've scoured the initial listings of the ***** and discovered the greatest Christmas gifts, so here they are. Best deals of Steam's 2025 Winter ***** For the sake of compiling this group of games, I've listed them from the most expensive to the cheapest, highlighting initially those AAA titles that rarely go for good prices even during the biggest sales, as you might have been waiting for the best moment to hop on them. With that in mind, here's what I've found. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 — $29.99 Image via Warhorse Studios Store Page Link Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 did not win anything at this year's The Game Awards show, but it was certainly a game that won our hearts. It did pick up some awards at other shows, which serves to highlight its importance, even if it was snubbed and (to some degree, unrightfully) eclipsed by Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Being a fantastic game, one that takes the setting and the player seriously, it'd be a shame to miss out on it. And, with this half-price deal, now might be the best time to hop on, provided you'd already completed the first game, itself on ***** for just $5.99. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 — $23.99 Screenshot by Destructoid Store Page Link Warhammer 40K is more topical than ever in the world of video games, what with the impending releases of Total War: 40K, Mechanicus 2, and Dawn of War 4, among other stuff. And, thankfully, there's also this amazing third-person shooter title that builds on the foundations of its predecessor, cranks everything up to 11, and makes the blood and gore more visceral than ever. It's also quite cheap now, at only $23.99, one of the best prices it's ever been at. So, if you're wont to dive deeper into the grim darkness of the far future, this is an ideal starting point. Cyberpunk 2077 — $20.99 Image via CD PROJEKT RED Store Page Link Cyberpunk 2077 is arguably the best game in the eponymous genre, providing a unique retrofuturistic 80s-style take on a cornerstone of science fiction while modernizing it and bringing it up to snuff with today's considerations of technology. It's an incredible achievement for storytelling and art as a whole, but it has rarely gone under $30 since the launch of Edgerunners and the subsequent revitalization of the once-stigmatized game. Now, it costs only $20.99, reaching quite low for its standards, and allowing players to jump into its virtual world. Unfortunately, the DLC, Phantom Liberty, is also $20.99, on par with the base game itself, so I'd wait before picking that up eventually, but wouldn't miss out on it due to the implications it has for the overall experience. Red Dead Redemption 2: Ultimate Edition — $19.99 Image via Rockstar Games Store Page Link Rockstar pulled a fast one with this listing, choosing to discount the Ultimate Edition of the game instead of the base version, allowing them to put a ******* percentage on the store listing because this one costs a hundred bucks instead of the usual 60. Even so, you get the base game and more with this purchase, itself quite low for AAA standards. Red Dead Redemption 2 also rarely goes beneath $19.99, as I've seen it reach $14.99 at most, and that's for the base edition of the game, so you might as well pick this one up while you're at it. Resident Evil 4 Remake — $15.99 Image via Capcom/Steam. Store Page Link The entirety of the Resident Evil franchise is currently discounted as part of the Winter *****, but I've decided to highlight this one in particular. It's one of the best games in the entire series, and with the remake, it became one of the best survival horror titles ever created. It ditches all the action scenes and arcade nonsense, instead grounding itself in gritty realism, dread, and terror, which serves to highlight the original game's strongest points. Capcom really has done a tremendous job reinvigorating these old games, choosing their best parts while cutting out all the unnecessary bits, and at this price point, it's a borderline steal. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy — $8.99 Image via Eidos Interactive Corp. Store Page Link Marvel games have generally been a bit of a hit or miss in the past few years, but we did get quite a few good ones as well. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is one such title, flying under most people's radars despite its overall quality and fun factor, which couldn't be said of that failed Avengers game. It's also less than $10, or just about as much as a McDonald's burger, and this one will keep you entertained much more than a trip to your local MCD. Tomb Raider Definitive Survivor Trilogy — $7.19 Image via Eidos Montreal Store Page Link This is arguably the best deal in this article, given that it's not one but three fully-fledged games, each with its own “definitive” edition. It gives you the entire reboot trilogy, following Lara Croft's journey from Japan to Russia to the deep, treacherous jungles. It's emotional, harsh, witty, and an incredibly fun adventure, and probably my favorite iteration of Lara ever made. I'm a bit disheartened that the new, “unified” Lara did away with the reboot trilogy's design, but I think we'll probably get mods fixing that up really quickly post-release. Hitman: World of Assassination — $2.99 Screenshot by Destructoid Store Page Link The ultimate assassin meets the ultimate discount, i.e., a 90 percent cut off the original price. For just $2.99, you'll be given the chance to take on the world's worst people, killing them off in the most creative, thoughtful ways imaginable. Of course, a lot of this game comes as separate purchases, but you should get your money's worth even from the initial experiences, because what else in the world could provide you with hours of fun for just three bucks? Frostpunk — $2.99 Image via 11 bit studios. Store Page Link Post-apocalyptic stories are great and all, but ones set in a world covered by ice and snow just have a stronger impact. It's sort of the inverse of the desert post-apocalypse we've come to know with Fallout, Kenshi, Mad Max, and other worlds, and boy does Frostpunk iterate on it well. It's a city builder at heart, but one that places you in the role of an overseer rather than an omniscient, far-removed creator. You are involved with your city, must enact laws, keep the people at bay, and, most importantly, keep them content, because if you step out of line and sow enough discontent, you'll be banished, or worse. For Honor — $1.49 Image via Ubisoft Store Page Link For some odd reason, this game continues to live and thrive despite Ubisoft's abject failures on all fronts, both regarding it and its other games. I return to it from time to time, enjoying the unique gameplay and competitive side, the likes of which you will rarely find elsewhere. And that might be what's keeping it together all these years post-launch, so if you never hopped in over nearly a decade, now's the perfect time to do so at such a low price of admission. In 2021 PCG reported on a singular scientific experiment: rats named Carmack and Romero had been taught how to 'play' Doom. I use the inverted commas because, cute and cool as it was, the question of whether the rats were really playing Doom in any meaningful way, or just running on a ball for some delicious sugar water, was not conclusively answered... Creative Assembly has closed the year off strongly. Total War: Warhammer 40K is the most exciting TW title in a while, Medieval 3 was confirmed, and Warhammer 3 had its affairs sorted. But 2026 is going to be even better, as CA pledged to do a lot more side quests again. Having promised similar side quests in 2024, Creative Assembly actually delivered on them. While the Total War launcher is still there, unfortunately, the company did do what it said it would otherwise: blood packs for upcoming Total Wars have been done away with, pre-order-exclusive factions won't be in TW: 40K, and individual bits and pieces of DLCs can now be purchased if you do not want the whole thing. All of this was outlined in the company's 2024 end-of-year blog, and based on this year's edition, there's a lot more it's aiming to do in the future. One of CA's missions should definitely be this UI's total overhaul. Image via CA Completely removing the launcher reamins on the agenda. A new, experimental mod manager was released this year, but that's just one step. More interestingly, CA wants to go back in ots catalog, too, revisiting old titles and brushing the dust off them, introducing small-scale bug fixes but also robust updates that'll make these (g)old games deeper and more accessible. It'll also apparently make Total War: Warhammer 40,000 into the “ultimate [40K] game” that will ditch its predecessor's sequel model, instead being the only game of its kind but (probably) packed full of DLCs and updates over 10 years (CA's words, not mine). These are bold new missions, which would only benefit us, the players, if they were to come true. As I've said before, TW: 40K is the most exciting Total War game in a long time (at least for me), and I cannot wait to see what CA has been cooking with it. And yeah, I do pray it'll come out by the end of 2026, but CA didn't mention this as its goal, unfortunately. The post After fulfilling last year’s promises, CA pledges to make 2026 another great year for Total War appeared first on Destructoid. View the full article

Following multiple days of criticism from fans and fellow game developers over the studio's use of generative AI, Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity maker Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke has announced an AMA (Ask Me Anything, typically on Reddit) in the new year, inviting people to ask members of different Larian departments "any questions you have about Divinity and our dev process directly." In a post to Twitter/X, Vincke said that since the announcement of the studio's next game, Divinity, at The Game Awards last week, "a lot has become lost in translation." He continued, saying that "Larian's DNA is agency" and said it would be irresponsible of the studio not to "evaluate new technologies," presumably referring to the generative AI discussion that started the controversy. But he also appeared to backpedal somewhat on the idea, adding that "our processes are always evolving, and where they are not efficient or fail to align with who we are, we will make changes." Vincke's full statement is below: It’s been a week since we announced Divinity, our next RPG, and a lot has become lost in translation. Larian’s DNA is agency. Everything we work towards is to the benefit of our teams, games, and players. A better work day, and a better game. Our successes come from empowering people to work in their own way and bring the best out of their skill & craft, so that we can make the best RPGs we can possibly make. In that context, it would be irresponsible for us not to evaluate new technologies. However, our processes are always evolving, and where they are not efficient or fail to align with who we are, we will make changes. To give you more insight, we’ll do an AMA featuring our different departments after the holiday break, in which you’ll get the opportunity to ask us any questions you have about Divinity and our dev process directly. We’ll announce the date in the new year. In the meantime, I wish you all happy holidays! Vincke's statement comes in response to criticism of his own remarks in interviews following the announcement of a new Divinity last week. In a Bloomberg interview, Vincke admitted that Larian has been pushing generative AI internally, even though it hasn't led to gains in efficiency or speed. Some examples given included using the technology for brainstorming, PowerPoint presentations, pitching concept art, and writing placeholder text. In response, a number of players across various social platforms, as well as game developers and even former Larian employees criticized the studio, arguing that the listed uses for generative AI at Larian either seemed like things that didn't benefit from generative AI at all (such as placeholder text), or alternatively were key parts of the artistic process and would suffer from not having humans at the helm throughout (concept art). Vincke then responded with multiple statements, one given to us, and another posted on Twitter/X, where he claimed that critics were misunderstanding what Larian was doing and that "We are neither releasing a game with any AI components, nor are we looking at trimming down teams to replace them with AI." We also had our own interview with Vincke about Divinity, which you can read in full here. Rebekah Valentine is a senior reporter for IGN. Got a story tip? Send it to [email protected]. Last week's Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred reveal at The Game Awards was the start of big announcements and news to come, Blizzard Entertainment president Johanna Faries said in a recent interview. Speaking with Variety, Faries said that the new expansion reveal for Diablo 4 is being thought of at the company "as a kickstart to this huge 2026 for Blizzard, all up," including its other main flagship franchises in Overwatch and World of Warcraft for the publisher's 35th anniversary. Image via Blizzard Entertainment “If you’re a Blizzard fan or you’re curious about any of our major franchises, the teams are cooking on major swings," Faries said. "And I think we just have a tremendous amount of pride in what’s going to come forward, not just at BlizzCon, but even in the run up to BlizzCon here. So all hands on deck, but it’s a very exciting time.” The anticipated return of BlizzCon is coming in September and will be the first iteration of the in-person fan event since 2023 that will aim to put an exclamation point on releases like Lord of Hatred, World of Warcraft: Midnight, and the 10th anniversary of Overwatch, while also likely announcing what comes next. "We really think about, what would speak to our fans?" Faries said of BlizzCon. "What do they want to see? What’s bread and butter expectation? What are the surprises that we can bring? How do we expand the scope of what BlizzCon can be? And I think that docks to part of the vision that we talk about a lot, that we want to continue to aspire to be the best gaming and entertainment company in the world. And BlizzCon in ’26 hopefully puts us in a position to really reflect that ambition in a ******* way. So I have total confidence that the teams are going to come very, very big, both with the heart and soul of what I think our core-most fans long for in a BlizzCon, but also bringing some very new things to the table." For WoW, the Midnight expansion will launch in March, followed by Diablo's DLC in April. Overwatch 2, meanwhile, will likely undergo another large-scale update similar to what happened earlier this year when the game introduced Perks and the new Stadium mode. But as it is also the 10th birthday of the first game, some surprises are expected. Faries says that 2026 will see Blizzard "investing in this iconic IP that we have across our entire portfolio, and really thinking about modernizing it, surprising and delighting our fans, being beholden to legacy where it matters, but also really doing some fresh takes that really put us into the next decade or three decades, now that we’re 35 years old, that put us at the industry dominance level that we always aspire to be at." Image via Blizzard Entertainment BlizzCon's early bird tickets sold out quickly last month, and with the company "gearing up for what we hope to be the biggest year yet," in Faries' words, it's easy to see why. Updates on Starfield, Bethesda's regularly maligned space-faring RPG, have been few and far between since its equally disappointing Shattered Space expansion, but rumors of a comeback are starting to pick up, and some are hoping to see a major overhaul like the one Cyberpunk 2077 went through post-launch. Starfield is still expected to receive a PlayStation 5 port, and similar rumors point to a Switch 2 version as well, increasing hopes that a so-called Starfield 2.0 is coming alongside. The Game Awards included a reveal trailer for NO LAW, a cyberpunk first-person shooter from developer Neon Giant and publisher Krafton that’s coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The trailer gave us a first look at the sleazy, lawless city of Port Desire and ended on a line that hints at the game’s tone: “Reap what you sow.” You play as Grey Harker, a seasoned military veteran who barely survived his last deployment. So he decided to leave war behind to lead a life of peace and gardening, but of course, that peaceful life wasn’t in the cards. Trouble came knocking on his door (or more like bulldozing through it), and now it’s time for some payback. Trouble isn’t exactly rare in Port Desire. As the trailer says, it’s a city with no laws and no oversight. It’s located on the coast where the borders of three nations meet, leading to a melting pot of both people and environments. There are seedy areas soaked in neon, tall buildings that stretch into the smog-filled sky, as well as lush areas where the jungle has started encroaching on the city. And you’ll see all of it as you travel across the dense open-world city. The Mayors have used violence and intimidation to establish a kind of order, but it’s tenuous at best. Everyone is out for themselves, justice is self-defined, and you’re seemingly always one step away from crossing the wrong person. In this den of danger and vice, Grey’s decisions are up to you. The open-ended story of NO LAW evolves depending on the decisions you make. Will you help and protect those who need it? Or will you take what you want when you want it, whoever gets in your way be damned? These decisions have consequences, and each decision and consequence compound on each other to make each playthrough different. After all, “reap what you sow” doesn’t just apply to the people who’ve wronged Grey. It also applies to you, the player. This is the kind of story where it won’t be possible to see every path and outcome in one playthrough, and your relationships will be shaped by your choices. Grey’s morality isn’t the only thing you’ll have control over. It’ll also be up to you how to approach combat, with several tools at your disposal. Having been in the military, Grey has training in gunplay, stealth, and hacking, but you’ll be the one to decide if he should specialize in one of these paths or be a jack-of-all-trades. He can stick to the shadows and strategically eliminate foes, use devices and hacking to outsmart them, or say to hell with all that and just rush in guns blazing, driven purely by rage. The trailer shows some of that in action, including sneaking through vents to get the drop on enemies from above, using a device to map a room, and facing a giant mech in a 1-on-1 shootout in the street using explosives in the environment. You can also see in the trailer that environments are built with verticality in mind, providing ample opportunity for both catching enemies unawares and violently kicking them off elevated surfaces to their deaths. This is the first look at NO LAW, but there are sure to be many more details revealed in the future. No release information was given, but we know it’s coming to Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and it’s available to wishlist now. If you want to get the latest updates on its progress, you can follow NO LAW on Discord, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, or Facebook. View the full article
