PlayStation and Sony have been leaning into live-service games for the past few years, and one of them could be another extraction shooter. The PlayStation live-service push has seen its fair share of highs and lows, and if new leaks are true, heist-focused Fairgames could be the company's next addition to the extraction shooter genre. Battlefield 6 is one of those gaming stories that prove certain companies never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Despite being one of the best-selling games of the last year, it has been bleeding players like there's no tomorrow, leading to massive layoffs at Battlefield Studios amid a total lack of understanding of what fans actually want to see. There haven't been many maps released, and content altogether seems dry, but with the release of Season Two, the future could be looking a lot brighter. What happened in this new season was the return of Operations after the game launched without them for no apparent reason. Operations was an incredible game mode back in Battlefield 1 that, though a bit grindy, continues to retain large numbers of players to this day, 10 years later, with EA playing ignorant to that fact all this time. Rushing enemies when the gas drops is an incredible experience. Image via EA It was reintroduced in BFV to little success due to poor execution and then excluded from the disastrous 2042, with BF6 again launching without it. However, Operation Augur, as it is known in BF6, is one of the best and most fun game modes I've ever played in a Battlefield title, with attackers having to beat the defenders on two different maps by capturing successive sectors using limited manpower. A couple of friends and I have been logging in constantly to play this new mode, and we are having a blast no matter the side we're playing on. We haven't been getting together to play BF6 since October, around the game's initial launch, since those starting maps got rather boring pretty fast with EA not adding anything significant or noteworthy to change our minds. The two maps on Augur, though, are bringing back classic Battlefield vibes even if the mode is locked to 48 rather than 64 players. The first map, Contaminated, is wide enough with many chokepoints where players can get stuck in and duke it out for control of a point. Some sectors have one, some have two points that need to be captured, with poisonous smoke dropping onto the map after each sector falls. While not nearly as large or open as some Operations maps in Battlefield 1, like Monte Grappa, it genuinely does offer enough for players to actually feel like they're involved in a larger-scale conflict. On Hagental Base, I felt like I was in Battlefield 3's Metro again or, for a better comparison, BF1's Fort-de-Vaux map. It's closed off, claustrophobic, and has players throwing enough frag grenades to blow up an entire city, let alone an underground system of tunnels. I even found it more fun than Contaminated since it features so many paths you can take to flank enemies, outmaneuver them, or try to avoid their explosive defenses. The maps aren't as large as I would love them to be, but they're still good in their own ways. Image via EA There are flaws, sure, mostly of the narrative kind since, as one player in my match said, "Why do I care about these places?" Yeah, I don't find myself as hyped up to defend random bases fighting for NATO or Pax Armata as I do toppling the bourgeoisie and saving the Motherland from fruitless warfare in BF1, but there's enough in the mode itself that helps maintain pressure and drive players into trying to push through. As you can see, I'm rather ecstatic about the mode. And you know what EA did? It made the mode time-limited. Yeah, it's an event, not a permanent thing, and that really is a bummer. I genuinely cannot recall when I had this much fun playing Battlefield 6, and knowing that fun will at most last two weeks is genuinely disappointing and makes me actually not want to play it. I've grown so tired of FOMO tactics that I find it disheartening when I see genuinely good features locked behind arbitrary temporal limits, making me not want them, instead of the opposite. If EA wants to preserve what's left of the BF6 player base, it should make Operations a permanent mode. In fact, it should update it constantly and add new scenarios to it, even if it means some other sides of the game are to be left out of the schedule. The company announced it's going to add naval warfare and persistent servers back into the game, so let's hope that's a segue into ******* and better Operations down the line. When it launched in October, ARC Raiders became an instant hit. It proved that extraction shooters can be viable live-service behemoths catering to more casual rather than purely hardcore audiences. Ever since then, it has grown month after month, hitting new player-count peaks time and again, which you don't see often these days. But 2026 hasn't been so kind to the game. Since its latest peak in January, ARC Raiders' average player count is five times lower than its 481,966 high. This is natural to a degree: players get tired of any given game and recirculate when a new update or significant patch comes out. There are only so many new players that you can draw into a niche genre, and I have a feeling ARC Raiders was played by just about every dedicated extraction shooter fan out there. ARC Raiders players are hopping off in anticipation of ******* content drops. Image via Embark Even the release of the Shrouded Sky update didn't do much to recover ARC Raiders' dwindling player base, boosting it up to ~250,000 peak players, which was still some 40,000 lower than the days leading up to the patch. There hasn't been any major or groundbreaking update to ARC Raiders during 2026, really, and that seems to have driven players away from the title, on top of the natural player shed cycle I'd mentioned above. For so long, ARC Raiders has maintained such a strong image and presence that many started believing it could not fail. It was compared to other, less successful games like Marathon, which lost their players a lot more quickly and more dramatically than ARC, which seemed to just clock in peak after peak and showed no signs of stopping. Now, as if suddenly, the game has effectively bled 80 percent of its community, and even if many of them intend to come back at some point, we cannot ignore those alarming numbers. Hunting robots is fun and all, but the extraction shooter formula quickly loses its grip. Image via ARC Raiders Wiki Even if it isn't the end of the world per se, it might be time to start reconsidering ARC Raiders' position on the market. It's not an unbeatable, eternal game that we all thought it was, and I don't think we'll ever get a title that repeats the imperishable natures of League of Legends, Dota 2, Counter-Strike, or World of Warcraft. No matter what happens, it seems those games just won't go away and even grow from time to time. ARC hasn't received good and substantial content for a while now, with developers taking their sweet time working on upcoming updates. For extraction shooters, that sort of MO borders on self-destruction, since players (myself included) love to get new stuff to do and work towards in the genre. The expeditions help, but let's not pretend they're enough to keep you engaged after you've wiped several times. Reaching a definitive conclusion on ARC Raiders won't be possible for the foreseeable future, but signs are surely telling us that yes, the game is on its way out—but Embark still has a lot of time and opportunities to reel it back in. Call of Duty's live-action adaptation is coming out in theaters on June 30, 2028, as confirmed today at CinemaCon. Directed by Pete Berg and written by Taylor Sheridan of Sicario fame, the film is finally going to bring one of the biggest franchises to the silver screens. As per the Hollywood Reporter, Call of Duty's film adaptation is going to start screening in mid-2028, June 30 to be exact. This was confirmed at CoD's CinemaCon panel today, with Activision president Rob Kostich saying its partnership with Paramount led to the movie's production. "I told everyone we were only going to make a movie if it's right. In David Ellison (Paramount chief), we found that partnership," Kostich said. Let's hope the movie ditches all the weird stuff Activision's been putting out lately. Image via Activision Pete Berg and Taylor Sheridan, who is known for his incredible work in TV and films, especially action ones, are co-writing the script, while Berg is also directing. Sheridan wrote some of the best military action movies I've ever seen, including Sicario and its sequel Sicario: Day of the Soldado. The first one is heralded as the better, but both movies have a very deep, human outlook on conflicts and darker sides of the world, which is no doubt going to help the Call of Duty movie become more than a mere action flick. Kostich also said that an authentic and human perspective will be at the core of the movie. "We want to make sure that the authenticity of it is captured on a human level so that it feels really real and infuse that with epic scope," he said. That ******* of 2028 isn't packed with a lot of films, allowing the Call of Duty adaptation to really grip the theatrical scene. However, the Hello Kitty movie is coming out a few weeks after CoD, which could turn into another case of Barbenheimer, or as we call it: Call of Kitty. It could be a fun month or so for moviegoers and casuals alike, mimicking the incredible theatrical experience we all had when Barbie and Oppenheimer were screened back to back. It's still a long way off, however, so there's a lot that could change in the meantime. But as thing stand, I have a feeling it'll be a fun time in cinemas, especially considering the contrast between Sheridan's grim writing and the sunshine and rainbow vibes of Hello Kitty. Remember Fairgame$? No? It's really hard to fault you if you don't. Announced in 2023, the debut title from PlayStation's Haven Studios has not been heard from since. We're coming up on the three-year anniversary of its reveal now, and a new report has some info on what could be happening behind the scenes. [Hidden Content] Originally described as a "competitive heist experience," the new report from Insider Gaming claims that the title is still in the works and will be looking to capitalize on the popularity of the extraction shooter genre with a similar mode of its own. Citing official documents, the report claims that one of Fairgame$'s mode's descriptions reads as follows: Break In – Find a vault code to gain access to the safe. Collect cash, upgrade your skillset, and make your play.Drill – The vault is breached. Be the team to grab the cargo, or set up your strategy to intercept it.Extract – The Cargo must be brought to the Extraction Site. Use the Extraction device to call your ride home. If your team fails to extract cargo, use another exit to Getaway. The 2023 trailer showed some slick CGI visuals and teased the aforementioned heist gameplay, showing multiple teams of three fighting over a vault and the loot within. Adding in some extraction-style mechanics makes it seem like the game is still somehow trying to find its niche, even if that means borrowing from other genres. It's anyone's guess on what will happen with Fairgame$ in the future, but given Sony's mishandling of several studios and titles in development this generation, it's hard to fault people for wondering if this game is ever going to come out. Trying to potentially shoehorn in mechanics from games like Escape From Tarkov or Marathon to try and bring in players may or may not make an overall impact in the end. Fairgame$ will reportedly be free-to-play, and it was announced for both PS5 and PC, but it still faces an uphill battle when trying to get a foothold in the multiplayer market in 2026...or whenever it may release. It's been seven long years now since Metro Exodus wowed us with its early RTX-powered ray tracing in a chilling post-apocalyptic setting. A lot has changed in the intervening years, both in the game industry and for many Ukraine-based developers working on the upcoming Metro 2039 at developer 4A Studios. "Everything we had planned for the next chapter of Metro changed in 2020 and more significantly in 2022," the developers said in a first look presentation of the game released today. While 4A is officially based in Malta, the studio was founded in Kyiv in 2006. And while 4A says the team working on Metro 2039 spans across 25 countries, the majority of those working on the game are Ukrainian. Read full article Comments View the full article
