  3. Team Triumph is one of the final events in Pokémon Go‘s Shared Skies season. Players from three teams work together to complete various Global Challenges. Upon completing these challenges, all players receive multiple rewards, including specific Timed Research quests. The key to finishing these challenges quickly and unlocking the Timed Research tasks is to focus on the tasks presented by Niantic. The Global Challenges will release in order and require players to focus on different aspects of Pokémon Go. Thankfully, the event begins simultaneously for all players, making it easier to sync up and make short work of them. Historically, these challenges don’t take the community long, and we can expect to see these Timed Research quests making their way to all players quickly. View the full article
  4. Whatever happened to Helldivers 2’s review ***** cape? This unique in-game item was inspired by the review ***** campaign Helldivers 2 suffered on Steam after publisher Sony made PlayStation Network accounts mandatory for PC gamers on Valve’s platform. Developer Arrowhead decided to turn the user review history graph into a cape, which is ready for launch but has yet to release. [Hidden Content] — Pilestedt (@Pilestedt) May 11, 2024 Nearly four months since Sony’s dramatic U-turn on Helldivers 2’s PSN account requirement, the review ***** cape is still M.I.A. So, what’s the problem? As part of an impromptu AMA on the Helldivers 2 Discord, Arrowhead creative chief Johan Pilestedt said the delay has to do with a lack of clarity on Helldivers 2’s sales status in those countries in which PSN is not live and therefore ******** unavailable, even now, effectively de-listed from Valve's platform. “We don't want to release it until we get more clarity on the country issue,” Pilestedt said, responding to questions about the review ***** cape. “Basically review cape is waiting for region conclusion,” he added. Then, explaining what that means, Pilestedt said: “The final decision if it will be sold in more countries.” We don't want to release it until we get more clarity on the country issue. Since Helldivers 2’s explosive launch across PC and PlayStation 5 earlier this year (it’s the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game of all time with an incredible 12 million copies sold in 12 weeks), Arrowhead and Sony have butted heads on numerous occasions. Developers at the studio have admitted that the furore around the PSN account issue caused internal stress to such a degree that it slowed development. And even now, there’s still a question mark over whether Helldivers 2 will ever be sold on Steam in the countries that lack PSN, even though the PSN account requirement was ditched. Clearly, Arrowhead has that same question. Arrowhead has also struggled with Helldivers 2 and its fanbase since the game’s massive launch, and has had to adjust the way it works to help create post-launch content in a sustainable fashion. Still, recent updates were criticized by the game’s community, and in the AMA Pilestedt touched on the impact of that feedback. "It's hard,” he said. “It's a tricky situation. The criticism is valid, but it causes low morale, and low morale causes slow development speed. Talk about a negative spiral." Then: “I think it's important for us to reiterate to the team that criticism happens because people care. The worst thing would have been if we ******* up and no one cared." 5. On Aug. 22, Valve added another Counter-Strike 2 update, which was the fourth one in a span of four days. The latest patch addresses only one minor bug, but the players are still surprised by developer’s recent efforts. The CS2 patch notes quickly made it to Reddit, where the community praised Valve for its latest work. Obviously, players didn’t shy away from making a few jokes here and there, but the overall sentiment is that fans are proud of the developer, and wish they’d keep up the pace of updates indefinitely. 8. If you haven't played The Suffering, I would urge you to do so immediately. Frightening, vicious, original, and uncompromising, alongside Rockstar's Manhunt, it's the closest mainstream games - at least during the '00s - came to a real, sleazy, lowdown horror where bloodshed is measured in gallons. A third-person monster shooter, it's a natural progenitor to Resident Evil 4, but the pacing is closer to ***** Space. It's also set in a prison, and as such feels like a distant ancestor to The Callisto Protocol. Nevertheless, both The Suffering and its sequel, The Ties That Bind, are about to be delisted, and vanish from the PC. Read the rest of the story... 10. It's been a little bit of time since Helldivers 2 players have heard much from former Arrowhead CEO and still very much chief creative officer Johan Pilestedt, with the developer seemigly having enjoyed some very well-earned time off. Now, however, he's made a bit of a return in rather grand fashion, by answering Discord questions from everyone and their mum. Naturally, the flak the studio has faced from players following the deployment of the most recent batch of ******* balancing changes - the one Arrowhead announced that much-discussed 60-day plan of changes that it's already acting upon in reponse to - came up, as it has in 99% of dev chats about the game over the last little while. "It's hard. It's a tricky situation. The criticism is valid, but it causes low morale, and low morale causes slow development speed. Talk about negative spiral," Pilestedt said in response to a player asking how the game's developers are currently feeling. "I think it's important for us to reiterate to the team that criticism happens because people care, " he added in a separate response, "The worst thing would have been if we ******* up and oo one cared." 11. Avowed will run at a “baseline” of 30 frames per second across Xbox Series X and S, developer Obsidian has confirmed. Speaking on the Iron Lords Podcast, art director Matt Hansen said Obsidian is “targeting a baseline of 30fps” for the first-person fantasy RPG. 60fps sounds unlikely, however, even on the more powerful Xbox Series X. Explaining, Hansen said Obsidian decided to go for 30fps in order to facilitate fancier visuals, and that because Avowed is a first-person, single-player game, “you don’t necessarily need that 60 frames.” It’s a first-person, single-player game, you don’t necessarily need that 60 frames. “We are targeting 30 frames per second, bare minimum," Hansen said. "That’s the expectation. “It’s a first-person, single-player game, you don’t necessarily need that 60 frames. And that allows us to get a lot juicier with VFX and lighting and all this other stuff. “It’s a trade-off we opted to make relatively early, and we’re really happy with that. The game’s running pretty smooth for how visually dense it is, and that was always our goal.” But, Obsidian is still figuring out the nitty gritty of performance: “It’s one of the last things you do,” Hansen said. Avowed is due out in February 2025 on PC and Xbox Series X and S, and joins a list of Xbox Series X and S games that launched at 30fps in recent years. That list includes Bethesda’s Starfield (which now runs at 60fps following a post-launch update), Arkane Austin’s Redfall (which also now runs at 60fps following a post-launch update), and Ninja Theory’s Hellblade 2, which has yet to receive a 60fps update. Indeed, Obsidian’s reasoning for targeting 30fps echoes comments made by Bethesda development chief Todd Howard in explaining why last year’s Starfield launched at 30fps on both Xbox Series X and S. “I think it'll come as no surprise, given our previous games, what we go for,” Howard said at the time. “Always these huge, open worlds, fully dynamic, hyper detail where anything can happen. And we do want to do that. It's 4K in the X. It's 1440 on the S. We do lock it at 30, because we want that fidelity, we want all that stuff. We don't want to sacrifice any of it. “Fortunately in this one, we've got it running great. It's often running way above that. Sometimes it's 60. But on the consoles, we do lock it because we prefer the consistency, where you're not even thinking about it. “And we don't ever want to sacrifice that experience that makes our games feel really, really special. So it feels great. We're really happy with how it feels even in the heat of battle. And we need that headroom because in our games, really anything can happen.” As was the case with recent Xbox games, Avowed may end up with a 60fps performance mode post-launch. There are also questions about Avowed eventually launching on PlayStation 5, following Obsidian's Pentiment and Grounded jumping to the rival console this year, and Microsoft's confirmed plans to release Id Software's *****: The Dark Ages and MachineGames' Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on PS5 next year. Avowed was delayed to February “to give players' backlogs some breathing room,” Microsoft has said. It was due out later in 2024. IGN recently went hands-on with Avowed and we came away impressed. 12. ***** is asking Yakuza/Like a Dragon fans if they want celebrities such as Keanu Reeves, Mark Hamill, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and more in upcoming games. Reddit user JohnConquest shared an email they received from ***** asking their feelings about franchises such as Crazy Taxi and Persona. When it came to Yakuza/Like a Dragon, it also asked how celebrity cameos affect player enjoyment and if they'd be interested in a long list of stars appearing in future games. Alongside video game adjacent stars such as Reeves, Hamill, Jack ******, Rami Malek, and David Hayter came actors who've previously appeared in the franchise including Matthew Mercer (who played Goro Majima in Yakuza: Like a Dragon) and Danny Trejo (who lent his likeness and voice for Dwight Méndez in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth). Also on the list is Aidan Gallagher from The Umbrella Academy, Hiroyuki Sanada from Shōgun, footballer Lionel Messi, WWE wrestler Xavier Woods, Hank Azaria from The Simpsons, gymnast Simone Biles, Dr. Dre, The Batman actor Robert Pattinson, Lady Gaga, baseball player Shohei Ohtani, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel, basketball player LeBron James, actor Seth Rogan, Kit Harington from Game of Thrones, Eminem, Ozzy Osbourne, and Billie Eilish. ***** and Yakuza/Like a Dragon developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio therefore appear to be testing the waters far and wide to find what fans may be interested in. Responding in the Reddit comments, some note they don't care about cameos and prefer when RGG Studio parodies real-life people, like the Yakuza 0 character Stephen Spining, who directed Indian Jeans and A.T. Others commented on particular inclusions which may be fun. "Ozzy Osbourne seems like the type of guy who'd make the perfect substory villain," yungspinach123 said. "Jack ****** in Like a Dragon would be wild, but somehow not the craziest thing in the series," added Meb2x. These cameos likely wouldn't appear in the next Yakuza/Like a Dragon game, which is due to be debuted in September 2024 and is therefore perhaps a tad too far along in development to include a last-minute celebrity, but could be seen in games further down the line if there's enough interest. It's equally possible nothing comes of this survey, of course, as it's fairly standard practice for companies to gauge fan interest in certain ideas without planning action based on the results. Nothing is known about the next game from RGG Studio, or even if it's a mainline Yakuza/Like a Dragon game. It could be from spin-off series such as Like a Dragon Gaiden or Judgement or something completely separate. ***** did register a trademark for something called Yakuza Wars earlier in August, however, which caused fans to theorize if this could be the next game and what it would be about. In our 9/10 review of the last game, IGN said: "Sprawling, enthralling, and packed with dynamic brawling, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth isn’t just the best turn-based Like a Dragon game, it’s one of the greatest games in the entire series." Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He'll talk about The Witcher all day. View the full article

  19. One of my GOAT moments as a videogaming youngster is the final mission of Psygnosis cyberpunk flight sim G-Police. (It came out in 1997, and as such, I think the statute of limitations on spoilers has passed, but if you still intend to play, stop reading now.) The mission completes the long arc of foreshadowing begun by the intro's mention that capital-class spacecraft have been outlawed, following a ruinous war. It turns out that one particular evil corpo has been sneakily building one of these megaships - not only that, but you get to fly inside it, cannons ablazing. It was while doing so that teenage me realised the true exceptionality of the Video Game Artform. You can't fly inside capital ships in, like, symbolist poems or baroque symphonies, can you? You can't fly in poems or symphonies at all, unless you do so metaphorically - "metaphor" being a kind of poor man's graphics card. The technology of flight simming has advanced mightily since G-Police's day. For instance: in Everspace 2's just-announced Titans DLC, you get to fly inside not just regular old spaceships, but massive space kaiju with procedurally generated digestive systems. Here's the trailer. Read more View the full article For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  23. It’s fairly well understood that Diablo 4’s first evolution post-launch came with Season 4: Loot Reborn, which revamped much of the game’s loot and itemisation loops. The next evolution will arrive with the Vessel of Hatred expansion, and its aptly named patch 2.0. Blizzard hasn’t quite explained what patch 2.0 will do to the game, but the developer recently confirmed what players have long be guessing: a major change to the levelling curve is coming, which may even take the form of a level cap squish. The good news? We won’t have to wait too long to find out what’s going to happen. Read more View the full article

When developer Techland was handed a large bunch of lemons after reams of information about its upcoming Dying Light 2 DLC was leaked, it decided to get out its juicer (if you still follow this awkward metaphor) and make a big flask of lemonade with it. 25. Is Fallout supposed to make you think about society? I'd argue that, at its best, it is, with capitalism being an obvious candidate to explore, given the mainline series' unflinchingly corporate ********* atomic age-inspired setting and the whole resource war that led up to the ****** being dropped. Though, according to co-creator Tim Cain, that isn't the central crux of Fallout theme-wise. The veteran developer has said as much in a comment (thanks, PC Gamer) on the latest video posted to his YouTube channel - which I'd definitely reccomend checking to pretty much anyone who's interested in games and how they get made - as part of a response to a fan asking for his thoughts on reading Fallout "as a critique on capitalist/corporative greed (Vault-Tec and others) and on excessive militarization". "Critique of capitalism was never the point of Fallout," Cain wrote, "In fact, the game went out of its way to mention that other countries like China were also behaving terribly. If anything, Fallout is a comment that war is inevitable given basic human nature." So yep, the whole war never changes line that, rather ironically, is more of a corporate slogan than anything else nowadays. Read more View the full article
