A member of U.S. Congress has now called out Activision Blizzard's use of generative AI in Call of Duty: ****** Ops 7, and demanded tighter regulation to "prevent companies from using AI to eliminate jobs." It's not been the smoothest start for Activision's blockbuster shooter franchise. When Call of Duty: ****** Ops 7 launched last week, players promptly took to social media to complain about AI-generated images they had found across the game, primarily focusing on calling card images with a Studio Ghibli-esque styling, following a trend of AI-Ghibli images from earlier this year. Now, in a post on X/Twitter, Californian congressman has Ro Khanna slammed the developer's move to AI to "extract greater profits," writing: "We need regulations that prevent companies from using AI to eliminate jobs to extract greater profits. Artists at these companies need to have a say in how AI is deployed. They should share in the profits. And there should be a tax on mass displacement." In a follow-up tweet, Khanna added that there should be tax reforms to discourage excessive automation, guardrails should be put in place to protect worker input before deployment — "not a Luddite complete ban" — adding "support unions and workers to bargain for workers' benefitting from productivity gains." When a commenter suggested that curbing AI investment could stifle innovation, Khanna said: "Innovation and technological advance is patriotic and good for humanity provided it serves people. So we need to think about how it is adopted and how people can still have meaningful work and independence. "A tax code that doesn't incentivize excessive automation, working input councils so AI is used for augmentation, rules so workers share in AI productivity gains, a plan to hire young grads who may less entry level jobs or to hire displaced workers, a tax on mass displacement and guardrails against them — all these a provisions to ensure a technology revolution benefits ordinary Americans." Last week, Activision acknowledged its used of "a variety of digital tools, including AI tools," in Call of Duty: ****** Ops 7, "to empower and support our teams to create the best gaming experiences possible for our players. Our creative process continues to be led by the talented individuals in our studios." Of course, this isn't the first time Call of Duty has come under fire for AI usage. This exact scenario played out back in February, when Activision admitted that it had used generative AI in the development of ****** Ops 6, including in a zombie Santa loading screen that angry fans referred to as "AI slop." AI isn't the only thing bothering Call of Duty fans, either. Last last week, players realized the story campaign has numerous restrictions tied to its always-online nature, with no method of pausing levels. You'll also be booted from your game if you're idle for too long. Call of Duty: ****** Ops 7 is out now. We've given the campaign a try and awarded it an 'Okay' 6/10, with our reviewer saying it's " a wild one thanks to the scope of its ambition, but the big swings it takes don't always land, leaving it an uneven step down from last year." Assassin's Creed publisher Ubisoft has said it will act swiftly to remove an image found within Anno 117: Pax Romana that contains AI-generated elements, which it says was not designed to be included in the game's final version. Fans of the city-building Anno franchise quickly spotted a loading screen featured in the series' latest entry that was not of the same quality seen in others, with some telltale signs of AI generation: missing limbs, low-quality features and oddly composited elements. As posted on reddit, and first reported by Kotaku, the game's Steam listing also features a warning that "AI tools were used tp help create some in-game assets." In a statement to IGN, Ubisoft noted that the image had been a "placeholder" and provided a final, human-made version of the artwork it had meant to include instead. "This image was a placeholder asset that unintentionally slipped through our review process," a Ubisoft spokesperson said. "The final image is attached here and will replace the current version of this artwork with the upcoming 1.3 patch. "With Anno 117: Pax Romana being our most ambitious Anno yet, we've assembled the largest team of artists ever for the franchise and to help meet the project's unique scope, they use AI tools for iterations, prototyping, and exploration. Every element players will experience in the final game reflects the team's craft, artistry, and creative vision." Still, the final version of the image simply looks to have been retouched to clean up the original image's more wonky elements — suggesting that anything else AI-generated which did look passable will remain. Regardless, Ubisoft's response differs from that of Call of Duty: ****** Ops 7 publisher Activision, which hit the headlines last week by simply acknowledging the widespread use of AI-generated imagery in its latest blockbuster shooter — particularly in its Studio Ghilbi-inspired calling cards. In a statement, Activision said its AI use was designed to "empower and support our teams to create the best gaming experiences possible for our players." Activision previously acknowledged the use of AI imagery in last year's ****** Ops 6, too — though only after fans pointed out a particularly egregious example of a six-fingered zombie Santa. Outside of its AI use, Ubisoft's Anno 117: Pax Romana has otherwise been warmly received. The game "is a gorgeous antique city-builder that sucked me in for dozens of hours," IGN wrote in our Anno 117: Pax Romana review, awarding the game a 9/10 score. Tom Phillips is IGN's News Editor. Generative AI is taking over the conversation when it comes to new games. From Arc Raiders and Where Winds Meet's uncanny voice acting 'spoken' by text-to-speech algorithms, to Call of Duty ****** Ops 7's 'artwork', I worry for the jobs lost as major studios embrace the flawed technology. I also worry for the quality of games: Anno 117 Pax Romana's recent AI art was particularly egregious. Thankfully, Obsidian has confirmed that no AI was used in The Outer Worlds 2, despite the fact that its game director predicted the current corporate obsession six years ago. 2005 was a great year for third-person survival horror game fans. After all, it brought with it the best Resident Evil game of the lot, Resi 4, which has only since been matched by its phenomenal 2023 remake. Capcom's big hitter wasn't alone, though, as developer Darkworks had also been whittling away at its own vision for the genre, Cold Fear. Now, 17 years after its arrival on Steam, Cold Fear has been delisted, prompting speculation that current rights owner Atari may soon reveal a remastered version of one of the era's most atmospherically haunting experiences. ARC Raiders has beaten Battlefield 6’s peak concurrent Steam players for the second weekend in a row, as its momentum continues to build. The third-person extraction shooter game, which was released on October 30, is developed by Stockholm-based Embark Studios, which consists of numerous former Battlefield developers. The studio is also led by Patrick Söderlund, the former chief design officer of EA and former CEO of Battlefield studio DICE. Söderlund left EA in August 2018 after a disappointing release for Battlefield 5, and joined Embark Studios as CEO three months later. Read More... View the full article

Sony has issued takedown notices for videos showcasing a fan-led project that's bringing doomed PlayStation live-service game Concord back to life. PlayStation's quickly-binned hero shooter Concord was one of the biggest flops in the compay's history. Amid disastrously low player numbers, Sony pulled the game offline just two weeks after launch, with one estimate suggesting it sold just 25,000 copies. It proved a costly failure for Sony, with hundreds of millions of dollars wasted. Its developer, Firewalk Studios, closed shortly thereafter. Despite its brief life, or perhaps because of it, Concord remains of interest — with a dedicated group of players dedicating "months" of work to getting the game back online again, reverse-engineering the code and using private servers to host online matches of Clash Point. And now, it seems, Sony has taken notice. "After a long time of reverse engineering [and] server development, we just managed to play a match of Concord!" the team announced on Discord (thanks, The Game Post). "The project is still WIP, it's playable, but buggy. Once our servers are fully set up, we'll begin doing some private playtesting, if anyone here wants to join those playtests, let me know (include what region/time zone you are in for convenience)." While the volunteer developers admitted the build could be "buggy," the team managed to get the main menu, character select screen, and matchmaking working again, with one team member saying, "the project is still a [work in progress but] it's playable." Around this time, volunteers began sharing videos and images of their project in action and posted them to YouTube. But news of the project gained traction, it also appears to have caught the eye of Sony, which has seemingly begun striking down the videos with copyright notices. Fans behind the rebuilt game appear keen to make clear their attempt only provides server access to players who had legitimately bought the game, rather than anyone using or sharing "copyrighted files." In a message on the fan project's Discord: "I know this sucks for people who got forcefully refunded, but lawyers are most likely already watching everything we do and I want to ensure this project stays as legal as we realistically can do. We will be removing any posts containing links to copyrighted files." Despite this, however, the group leaders have now paused invitations, stating they had received "worrying legal action." In February 2022, Jim Ryan, then-PlayStation's boss, announced that the company would launch more than 10 new live-service games by March 2026, and spent big on studio buyouts as part of the drive, bringing in Destiny developer Bungie, ***** Raymond's Haven Studios (Raymond has since left the company), and the now-shuttered Firewalk Studios. Since then, however, Sony has cancelled a slew of projects, including a live-service God of War title in development at Bluepoint, and another live-service title being made by Days Gone developer Bend. Firesprite also previously ditched a live-service Twisted Metal project, while Insomniac was known to have worked on a live-service co-op Spider-Man game titled The Great Web, and Naughty Dog's live-service The Last of Us multiplayer effort was also ditched after years of work. And then there was Concord. Now, however, Sony has reflected on its progress in transforming PlayStation into a company that runs a suite of successful live-service games, and the company's chief financial officer, Lin Tao, acknowledged during Sony's latest financial results briefing that the plan was "not entirely going smoothly." Capcom says it foresees little risk of its next big game, Resident Evil Requiem, experiencing performance issues on PC like Monster Hunter Wilds. Wilds has notably struggled with performance issues on PC since it launched in February, which has attracted criticism from some players and led to a promise of technical improvements from Capcom. During its latest financial results Q&A, Capcom was asked if there was any risk of Resident Evil Requiem suffering from similar issues, since it shares the same RE Engine technology. Read More... Call of Duty: ****** Ops 4 is the next title in Activision's illustrious FPS series. It is set between the events of ****** Ops 2 and 3, but marks a huge departure for Call of Duty in that it's the first entry to not feature a traditional campaign. In its place is a battle royale mode called Blackout, which joins the core multiplayer and zombies mode to make it the most multiplayer-focused COD yet. Owing to its setting, Call of Duty: ****** Ops 4 promises a return to a near-future where drone warfare is commonplace - not quite boots on the ground, but not space warfare either. Working on the 15th instalment in the main series, and the first with a story arc to make it past three games (four if you count World at War), developer Treyarch will have a tough job shrugging off any series weariness while still appealing to hardcore Call of Duty players. So, what can we expect from Call of Duty: ****** Ops 4 when it deploys on PC? Here is everything we know about the ****** Ops 4 release date, from beta dates and battle royale, to the gameplay changes and multiplayer modes we can expect to see at launch. The Ashes of the Damned map in ****** Ops 7 Zombies has some really cool side quests, and one of them involves interacting with the Ghost Twins to get a free perk and more. The Ghost Twins easter egg isn't part of the main one, which makes it highly possible for you to miss. However, completing the secret quest is easy, and it also fetches you some cool rewards. Let's look at how you can complete the quest and how to find it first on the Ashes of the Damned map. ****** Ops 7 Ashes of the Damned Ghost Twins easter egg walkthrough The Ghost Twins easter egg can be accessed pretty quickly. You'll first have to head to Vandorn Farm and then clear the infestation from the power pump. Shoot down all the infestations within 30 seconds, and then flip the switch. You can find the switch inside the Barn (unlock the main door with Essence). You can also find a Fumigator at this location to grow an Aether plant to get more rewards. Screenshot by Destructoid Head over to the Farmhouse, and go upstairs. You'll find a flickering TV by the bunk beds. Hold R on the TV, and it will make some noises. Repeat this a few more times, and the twins will appear on the screen. You'll have to interact until there's just one twin on your TV. Screenshot by Destructoid Once this happens, head over to the Barn's cellar and check out the south wall. You'll find a ghost drawing on the floor. Approach the spirit, and it will disappear. Go back to the TV and interact with it until the twins are reunited. The TV will then go static. Keep interacting till both spirits are missing from the screen. Image via Activision The last task is to find them on the Vandorn farm. You'll find them close by the Silo, near the Power Pump. They will disappear when you approach them, rewarding you with Essence and the Wisp Tea perk. I will advise keeping this perk intact, as you'll require it later for completing the main easter egg and obtaining one of the several items required to make the Serum. The Smuugler's Tunnel Extraction is the main exfil area in the expanded part of the Intercange map in Escape from Tarkov, and this guide will help you find its exact location. Located on the western part of the map, finding the Smuggler's Tunnel Extraction point can be slightly confusing. Moreover, you'll also have to bring a Green Flare in your inventory to complete the extraction. Where is the Smuggler's Tunnel Extraction in Escape from Tarkov The best landmark for the Smuggler's Tunnel Extraction is the mall (if you're playing in the dark, use the mall's signs as an icon). Image via Escape from Tarkov Fandom Wiki. Remix by Destructoid If you take the rail tracks in the forest, going east will get you to the Railway Exfil. Instead, go opposite, and the mall will be on your right. Screenshot by Destructoid Go opposite to the entrance of the mall (the signs), and you'll find a bunch of containers. Go through the containers, and go up the hill and turn left. Go straight past the crane lift, and you'll find a path going right in between two rocks. You'll find a truck with a sign on it. Screenshot by Destructoid Go right by the truck and follow the path. You'll reach a green container (image below) with a marking on it. Equip the flare from your inventory, and watch out for the signal flare alarm at the bottom of your screen. You'll find a guard shack by the container, and this is the best area to use the flare. Screenshot by Destructoid If you're trying to use the flare outside the correct location, you'll be gunned down. Hence, be careful about where you're using the flare. Before you escape, the camp by the marked truck has plenty of items to loot. But the location also has Scavs, so be mindful of that. If you manage to put them away, the loot is all yours, and you can carry them back safely via the extraction.
