  1. The vast expanse of space is ripe for exploration, especially for space epics like Star Wars and Warhammer 40,000. That said, most sci-fi settings tend to be fantasy settings that just happen to be set in space. I love over-the-top settings, but there's times when you want to try something a bit more down to earth. After all, reality is still plenty fascinating. Certainly fascinating enough for the upcoming Pioneer RPG, a game set not-so-far from our own present. Read the rest of the story... 2. The idea of "canonicity" in RPGs is an odd one, given the whole point of both videogame and tabletop RPGs is that the players decide what the main characters do. But sequels, spin-offs, and sourcebooks have a habit of choosing particular outcomes as the "real" ones—unless it's the Elder Scrolls, where every ending of Morrowind happened at once... 3. Of the many things Steam Frame is, what it isn't is a Valve Index 2. But that's a good thing. When Valve Index launched in 2019, it was one of the most expensive VR headsets on the consumer market. Facebook had just launched the $400 Rift S and Oculus Quest headsets, and there was nothing like Apple Vision Pro or Samsung Galaxy XR. At $1000 for the full kit, Index was a premium product for enthusiasts, meant to push the high-end, with (relatively) wide field of view lenses, off-ear speakers, and precise laser tracking. The thick, heavy tether and wall-mounted base stations were a feature, not a bug. Based on some of the reactions to Steam Frame over the past few days, it's clear that many Index owners, and hardcore VR enthusiasts in general, were hoping that Valve would repeat its last-decade strategy, with another high-end tethered headset. They wanted 4K micro-OLED panels (or at least, say, 3K LCD with local dimming) fed by yet another DisplayPort cable, with ultra wide field of view lenses, face tracking, and "Lighthouse" base station tracking, backwards-compatible with existing SteamVR peripherals. But there are good reasons why Valve didn't do this, and why Steam Frame is the better strategy. Index was relatively successful for what it was trying to be, by all accounts. More than six years later it still makes up around 15% of SteamVR usage. But what it did not do is meaningfully increase the total number of people playing VR games on Steam. Instead, it was the $300 Quest 2 that achieved that feat. Less than six months after launch it became the most used headset on Steam, and today standalone headsets make up over 2/3rds of SteamVR use. Standalone headsets with computer vision tracking allow anyone to connect to SteamVR on their PC with a couple of clicks, completely wirelessly, with no base stations or other complex setup required. And that they are wireless matters. Among existing VR enthusiasts, there is a sentiment that wireless is a nice-to-have, but far from essential feature, while some are even actively opposed to it, adamant that they'll never cut the tether. But there is a selection bias at play here. People who considered the cable a dealbreaker didn't buy the Index, or any other tethered PC VR headset. And they are the majority. Since the HTC Vive Wireless Adapter, seven years ago, it has been obvious that wireless is the ideal for VR. You don't have to stow a cable and avoid running over it with your chair wheels. You can rotate freely in VR without worrying about getting tangled. And you can truly lose yourself in the virtual world because you don't have a tether reminding where your PC is. In fact, in 2017 Valve CEO Gabe Newell called wireless VR a “solved problem”. “My expectation is that wireless will be an add-on in 2017, and then it will be an integrated feature in 2018”, Newell was quoted as saying during a press conference that year. Of course, the Vive Wireless Adapter relied on a 60GHz signal, unable to penetrate solid objects at all, so the transmitter had to be wall mounted and the receiver positioned on the top of your head, plus it was expensive. It was the right goal, but with the wrong technology. Within days of the release of Oculus Quest people started using their existing home Wi-Fi network for wireless room-scale PC VR, leveraging the same H.264 codec used for video streaming. The death of tethered PC-only VR headsets, or at least their relegation to a tiny niche, was now inevitable. There are two problems with this approach, however. Firstly, the high compression ratio means that this kind of wireless VR doesn't look as good as a DisplayPort signal. And secondly, while some enthusiasts have ideal dedicated network setups with a high-end dedicated access point, most people rely on the cheap router their ISP supplied them a decade ago, which may not be near their VR playspace and also has to handle the traffic from the rest of the household. With Steam Frame, Valve is using a combination of both hardware and software cleverness to refine the compressed wireless streaming experience. The headset has dual wireless radios, one of which is dedicated to the PC wireless adapter included in the box. And eye-tracked foveated streaming is used at all times, optimizing the video stream quality for where you're currently looking. Essentially, Steam Frame is trying to package the high-quality wireless VR setups that only enthusiasts experience today into a relatively mainstream PC gaming product. It's not about delivering yet another tethered PC VR headset with higher resolution – there are Bigscreen and Pimax headsets for that. Instead, Steam Frame is focused on delivering the best possible wireless PC VR experience that can be sold for less than $1000 (Valve's current plan). And it's exactly this that PC VR needs. A product that out of the box, for every buyer, delivers an excellent wireless PC VR experience, without modifying their home network setup. Steam Frame isn't Index 2, but it's the better move for Valve. And instead of selling to the same few hundred thousand enthusiasts, I suspect it could sell millions of units through its lifetime, bringing far more customers for developers building PC VR games. 5. merican McGee's Alice is simply sensational, what with its weird, janky hybrid of shooter-inspired action and surreal 3D platforming, and though the sequel Madness Returns didn't hit me quite as hard, it's still well worth your time. 6. The Medical Storage room has some amazing loot to obtain in ARC Raiders, but you'll have to obtain a key first. The Medical Storage key allows you to bypass the security lock in place at the location. Sadly, there's no guaranteed spot where you can find this key. However, I have shared the location where I managed to find it, along with a few favorable spawn spots. Finally, I have also mentioned the location where the key can be used in Stella Montis. Table of contentsHow to find the Stella Montis Medical Storage Key in ARC RaidersWhere to use the Stella Montis Medical Storage Key in ARC RaidersHow to find the Stella Montis Medical Storage Key in ARC Raiders I managed to find the Medical Storage Key from the Ruby Residence building in Dam Battlegrounds. This spot has been my favorite area as far as finding keys is concerned. There's no exact spot, and you'll have to go through all the containers that you can find manually. There are multiple blocks, so try to loot as much as possible. Ruby Residence in ARC Raiders. Screenshot by Destructoid If you're on the Dam Battlegrounds, the Research and Administration building is certainly worth looting. The upper floors of this building get frequent key spawns, allowing you to access the locked areas and all the loot that you can find inside. Ruby Residence and Research Administration Building. Screenshot and remix by Destructoid Unfortunately, the Medical Storage key can't be obtained from any quests. This would have made the task easier. In simple words, you'll have to keep trying your luck. It's also recommended to search Residential areas as they tend to have a higher drop rate when it comes to keys. Ultimately, it will all be down to your luck. If you manage to find one, here's what you need to do next. Where to use the Stella Montis Medical Storage Key in ARC Raiders The Medical Storage Key can be found at one of the entrances/exits of the zone. I have marked its location so that you can find it quite easily. Since I had spawned at the southern part of Medical Research, I just travelled straight, and the room was to my left. Screenshot and remix by Destructoid If you're coming from Assembly, take the corridor that leads to Medical Research, and use any of the stairs to go down. Once you have reached the location, just use the key to go inside and loot as many items as possible. The post Stella Montis Medical Storage key location in ARC Raiders appeared first on Destructoid. 7. ARC Raiders has crushed its own player peak for the third weekend in a row, climbing almost to the very top of Steam's most-played games by concurrent players. The new record is another testament of the game's quality and proof that the extraction shooter genre was just waiting for its king. With 480,682 players at the time of writing (thanks SteamDB), ARC Raiders has become the third-most-played game on Steam per concurrent players, behind only Valve's own Counter-Strike 2 and Dota 2. It managed to beat out Battlefield 6, PUBG, and Call of Duty, among others, in what's one of the most impressive shows of power in live-service gaming history. It's the only non-MOBA, non-FPS game in a long time that's consistently grown its player count week after week, and is showing no sign of stopping. In fact, every time I refresh the SteamDB page the player count grows, and it's likely to keep expanding as time goes on and new patches, maps, and content are rolled out. The game's gameplay loop is beyond fun. Image via Embark Embark Studios has truly made one of the best games of all time, following up its free-to-play success, The Finals, by transporting us into an extraction shooter environment where anyone can be your friend or enemy. That is, except for the ARCs, powerful robotic "creatures" ruled by a sentient AI from orbit on an Earth that's been long abandoned by its previous inhabitants. The Raiders, a group of survivors living underground in Speranza, are all that's left to try and take Earth back from the robots. The story and world lend themselves perfectly for a high-stakes survival extraction shooter experience, which is coupled with a stellar movement and combat system that's heavily inspired by The Finals, but now more refined and responsive than ever. It's an incredible game, and one that deserves all the attention and praise that it's getting, which is, by all counts, quite massive. 13. One of the biggest limitations of Where Winds Meet concerns the way character creation works. At first, it appeared that there was no way to create a second character without using a different Steam account or opening a new one. However, there's an indirect way of getting a new character without having to endure the pain of deleting your old one and waiting for 14 days. How to get a second character in Where Winds Meet It's completely possible to create a new character in Where Winds Meet if you're playing on PC. The method is slightly complicated since there's no easy way. Make sure you have cleared the tutorial of Where Winds Meet, as you'll need access to the Settings.Go to the Other tab. When you launch the game again, you can create a new character. We added the NetEase account, as you need to have two accounts before you can unbind. 14. ****** Ops 7 is officially the worst user-rated Call of Duty of all time, Metacritic's user scores show. The game, sitting at 1.6 out of 10, is being lambasted for its cheap use of AI, including "Ghibli filter" generations, its lackluster campaign, and a "Skibidi toilet" final boss. As first spotted by Clawsome Gamer, ****** Ops 7's user reviews on Metacritic are sitting at 1.6 average out of 10, placing it firmly at the bottom of the Call of Duty pile. This is in stark contrast with last year's ****** Ops 6, which carries a lukewarm 6.2 average score among the player base. The primary complaints this time around include the game's lackluster campaign, which features surreal boss fights and gameplay elements that could've easily been mistaken for Metal Gear Solid. One of its final bosses in particular, which players are describing as a "Skibidi toilet boss fight," seems to have been caused a major stir among the fans. The player takes on a giant in a dreamlike sequence, having to jump over massive shockwaves sent out by the giant's slams, which seems to remind folks of the Source engine Skibidi Toilet series of YouTube skits. The skits themselves are always over-the-top with giant toilet-headed machines wreaking havoc upon various locations, and I can't say the boss fight isn't reminiscent of that. [Hidden Content] Additionally, players are furious due to Activision's decision to include AI "art" in the game, particularly in the calling cards that are very openly generated by one of many AI tools out there. Some of the calling cards appear to be using the Studio Ghibli AI filter, which was a popular meme a few months ago, and not a great one at that. Players argue that a $70 game should not have these cheap, quickly-generated images in it, and that actual human-made art should've been there instead. Fans weren't the only ones to call Activision out for AI. A US congressman, Ro Khanna, criticized the company for using the technology and called for "regulations that prevent companies from using AI to eliminate jobs to extract greater profits." Activision, on the other hand, said in a statement sent to media that it uses AI "to empower and support our teams to create the best gaming experiences possible for our players," but that "talented individuals" remain in charge of creative processes in its many studios. Make of that what you will. Keep in mind that these reviews could be part of a review-bombing campaign, thus not reflecting actual player sentiment. Destructoid gave ****** Ops 7 an 8.5, praising its multiplayer over the campaign, which we thought was meh at best. Others have done similarly, and the game has around 82 on Metacritic based on critic reviews. Be it all as it may, ****** Ops 7 is being criticized by fans and critics alike. The game has many strong points to speak of, but its glaring flaws aren't helping it one bit. Much like with any ****** Ops title thus far, players are hoping to play on one particular map that's become a trademark of Treyarch's level design: Nuketown. It is currently not in the game, so here is everything you need to know about when it's coming, how it'll look, and more. ****** Ops 7 Nuketown release date and details The more things change, the more they stay the same. Image via Treyarch Nuketown is coming to ****** Ops 7 on Nov. 20, as part of a pre-season update. The map will retain its recognizable look, updated to fit the narrative and thematic scope of the new game. It has two vehicles in the center, two mirrored buildings on each side, both with courtyards in the back and an extra floor above. It's been repainted with a retro futuristic look that combines 1950s Americana with the super technological world of ****** Ops 7, making the map look slick and better than ever. Treyarch promises that the introduction of the Wall Jumping mechanic will transform how Nuketown is played, as it will provide "more ways to traverse this map than ever before," which should, in turn, make Nuketown much more dynamic and chaotic than it was in previous installments. The map's small size invites players to clash quickly and aggressively, and I'm excited to see how it meshes with this extra speed and verticality. Nuketown is one of many ****** Ops 2 maps that are being remastered and brought back to ****** Ops 7. Some notable examples include Hijacked, Express, and Raid. 20. ****** Ops 7, like many other modern shooters, is reviving the age-old couch co-op experience that allows multiple players to experience the game in split-screen. But the latest CoD imposes certain limitations on the mode, which can muddy the waters as to what you can actually play in split-screen. So, if you were wondering about that, here's all you need to know. ****** Ops 7 split-screen mode, explained The campaign can only be played in online co-op, and not in split-screen. Image via Activision Call of Duty: ****** Ops 7 includes two split-screen modes, one for Multiplayer, and the other for Zombies. These two modes can be played by two players running current-gen consoles (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners have been left out), provided they both own the game. PC players are barred from split-screen, too. To do so, you need to go to the Multiplayer or Zombies screen, then press A or X on a second controller to log the other player in. Once that's done, you can run the game in split screen co-op. Many players have wondered if ****** Ops 7 has a campaign co-op split-screen mode, and the answer is no. Unfortunately, the campaign can only be run in online co-op, and currently has no way to be played in split-screen. Why this was implemented in such a way is anyone's guess, but perhaps Activision will heed the calls of players and introduce a split-screen mode for the campaign as well. As things stand, you'll only be able to play Multiplayer and Zombies in split-screen, on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S and X.
