Even the best multiplayer games aren't immune to losing their playerbase. Mass Effect 3's Galaxy at War. Gears of War 3's ****** Mode. Splinter Cell's Spies vs Mercs. There are so many incredible multiplayer experiences lost to time as their platforms become obsolete, servers get shut down, or people move on. Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 was, for a time, one such game. With counts that rarely exceeded 1,000 active players on Steam, the community is steady, albeit small, but now a whopping 90% off ***** has seen GW2 hit its highest peak since launch, and it's showing no signs of slowing down. Steam is finally making some major changes to its storefront that will make it far easier for players to try a game before they purchase it. Currently, in the gaming space, it's never been easier for players to dip into a collection of games, either via PC and Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus' libraries, and decide if a title is right for them, but Steam has long offered a more traditional way of doing this with demos that let players try out a section of a title that should serve as a solid representation of what the full game will be like before someone pays for it. Take the deck-building elements of Magic the Gathering or Slay the Spire and combine them with the base-building, defensive side of Orcs Must **** and Kingdom Rush, then sprinkle on some of that TFT-brand autobattling, and you have new Steam strategy game Vambrace: Dungeon Monarch. Its tactical fantasy stylings are making their way to PC in late 2024, but you can try it out right now thanks to a free Steam demo that's just landed on the Valve store. Astro **** is getting its very own game in September, but if you aren't sure whether you want to pick it up or not, there's some new gameplay that might help you out. Back in May, PlayStation finally revealed that long-rumoured Astro **** sequel, showing off a taste of the game's greatly expanded upon platforming action. There were some previews for the game last month, which were generally quite favourable, and now it seems that that demo that the press got to go hands on with is currently available to try out at ChinaJoy 2024. The gameplay, which you can check out below, shows off a few levels, one being mostly a boss ****** with a giant octopus monster. This one sees Astro picking up some boxing gloves that lets it ****** out its fists to ****** enemies and swing across large gaps. The second is an honestly quite challenging looking level set in space which just so happens to have a cameo from Jak and Daxter, who you have to save. Lastly is another difficult looking level that involves some tricky platforming, with this one having you rescue the player character from Journey. Clearly this seems to be a running thing throughout the game, and considering there are over 150 classic PlayStation characters featured in the game, it looks like you'll have a lot of difficult levels ahead of you (though I imagine some of them will just be cameos). If you're a Once Human fan hoping for an FPS mode, you probably shouldn't as developer Starry Studio has no plans for one. Like any time a third-person shooter releases, Once Human has some fans that would like a first-person mode, kind of ignoring the fact that when a game is built a particular way, something like that can break it in unexpected ways. As spotted by PCGamesN, an update was shared by Starry Studio responding to some commonly brought up topics, which also included things like character, controls, and the camera. Speaking on the FPS point, Starry wrote, "Including a first-person perspective may result in conflicts with the current game design. In response to your requests, we will consider adding first-person elements into future scenarios and game modes. However, we have no plans to add a first-person perspective to the game at present." Essentially, don't expect it for the main game, if at all, as again it is a third-person game after all. In more positive news, Starry did also confirm that the 0.3 second delay before your character starts to move is being removed, writing, "The movement windup animation consists of about 20 movements and is quite intricate, so refining some of the details will require some time." It also noted that Vaulting is being upgraded, with a plan to change things so that "the character only begins vaulting after reaching a certain height," as right now you vault and jump at the same time. Double Fine's Psychonauts 2 documentary PsychOdyssey just got one final episode, wrapping up the game's years-long journey. Back in 2023, beloved indie developer Double Fine released a 32-part series covering the entire development of Psychonauts 2, the long-awaited follow-up to the PS2/ Xbox original. It tracked the game's development right from the very beginning, I'm talking when they were just spitting ideas out into the wind, offering a very unique look into the trials and tribulations of game development you pretty much can't get anywhere else. And now, Double Fine has released one final episode of PsychOdyssey, charting what came after the game was released, including reflections on some of the series' more dramatic moments. Psychonauts 2 didn't exactly have the smoothes of development periods. Double Fine kicked things off with the game by launching a crowdfunding campaign through Fig in 2016, a crowdfunding platform specifically for video games, which specifically allowed backers to gain a share of future revenues in future projects (the company was dissolved in 2023). It didn't actually release until 2021, but was actually received quite positively - Ty gave it full marks for VG247 at the time of release in his review. Read more View the full article
Pickups are returning with loads of pickaxes for the Greek Treasures Dig Hunt event in Monopoly GO through Leaps of Fortune, a two-day Solo event featuring 50 milestones worth of rewards. One of my favorite daily event objectives is Monopoly GO Pickups, where landing on a Pickup token earns you milestone points toward the event’s rewards. Between the Leaps of Fortune event and the Javelin Jolt Tournament Leaderboard, earning Treasure Hunt tokens is a breeze. All you need to do is roll those Dice with a multiplier. If you've been meaning to pick up something on the Xbox 360, you best do so soon, as you might have forgotten that its digital storefront closes tomorrow. Last yeah, Microsoft announced that it was shuttering the Xbox 360 Marketplace, a move welcomed by none, but one that isn't particularly surprising. The Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops both closed down last year, and Sony tried to shut down the PS3, Vita, and PSP storefronts back in 2021, though fan outcry ultimately reversed that decision, even if it has become a ball ache to buy anything on those platforms. And now, the ****** knell is ringing for the Xbox 360, the original pseudo-home for the modern indie game movement, as its digital Marketplace is shutting down tomorrow, July 29. As it was with the 3DS and Wii U, it's a bit of a preservationist's worst nightmare, officially speaking anyway. Last year, VGC released an analysis that found that more than 220 digital Xbox 360 games will no longer be available for purchase anywhere through official channels once the store goes down. This will likely also affect DLC for certain games as well, given how rare it is for most DLC to end up on disc, aside from re-releases of particular games. Read more View the full article

Halo Infinite, and the series as a whole, is in a rough spot right now. Between ongoing, unsubstantiated rumors that series developer 343 Industries is stepping away, a lack of truly meaningful updates, and anticipation for where Master Chief goes next, it's getting ******* to be excited about the shooter. I adore Infinite's gameplay but, like many, have struggled over the last few years to find meaningful reasons to stick around. To that end, 343 is once again letting us all know that it will continue supporting Infinite, but I'm not sure for how much longer. Read the rest of the story... There hasn't been a new main series Borderlands game in quite a while, but Gearbox head ****** Pitchford is confident fans will be "very, very happy" with the next one. It was only in 2022 when we last entered the world of Borderlands with New Tales from the Borderlands, and of course there was the spinoff Tiny Tina's Wonderlands too with a more fantasy take on the series' classic ********* and looting gameplay. But in terms of the main series, there hasn't been a new game since 2019's Borderlands 3, a whole five years ago. So that raises the question of where a hypothetical Borderlands 4 might be? It was mentioned last year on a developer's LinkedIn, but there hasn't been an official announcement in any capacity. Now, in a recent interview with GamesRadar, Gearbox head ****** Pitchford shared that fans won't have to wait all that long until they announce whatever's next for the world of Borderlands. "I haven't been perfect at hiding the fact that we're working on many things, and that we're working on big things," Pitchford said. "I’m confident that our fans are going to be very, very happy with the next video game project when we are ready to announce it. And I will tell you that we’re not going to be making people wait for a long time before we announce it." Read more View the full article

The Sims gives the majority of its attention to The Sims 4, which isn't surprising when the number of expansions and amount of money they brought in are considered. When The Sims 4 isn't in the spotlight, attention tends to turn towards The Sims 5, which is sometimes called Project Rene, as it seems to be an inevitable release for the future. However, there's a forgotten game in the franchise that could start a new and exciting series of spinoffs if it was given a bit of attention and a remake or made available through digital marketplaces and updated enough to run on modern PC systems.
