    Welcome to the last gasp of July 2024, and your first inhale of a week full of pine-fresh bargains. If I didn't already own several, the top of my To Buy list would be that 83 buck 1TB MicroSD. It's a pretty perfect storage solution for both Switch and Steam Deck users. Oh, and you can also zip down to the Top 10 games of last week and get decent coins off a thing that everybody seems to want right now. In retro news, I'm marking the 20th birthday of Sid Meier's Pirates!, an arrr-rated remake of an '87 classic I smashed repeatedly on PC. Think: a 2.5D, top-down Sea of Thieves, and you're not far off the mizzenmast—fencing, naval battles, sniffing out treasure, and harnessing winds/avoiding reefs are your bread and butter gameplay. The long-term ***** (so to speak) lay in its trading and RPG-lite elements, plus the addiction of building a multi-ship armada and a bad-***** rep. Top game. Would replay.     Fortnite is apparently opening up the floodgates for its Creative mode as a new ***** suggests that it will soon allow creators to build maps with collab items in them, something that wasn't possible for a long time.     Fortnite‘s newest Pirate of the Caribbean quests are live, and one of the challenges asks players to look for a coconut to hit players to make a statement that Pirates don’t always need the most potent weapons to intimate their enemies. Coconuts are a type of consumable in Fortnite that restores five shields. In the latest Code Pirate challenges, players have to turn them into a ******* and strike other gamers by throwing it at them—but it can be challenging to reliably find the item.     A big part of The Sims 4‘s lasting appeal is its constant stream of updates and expansions, but these new content drops can often bring trouble. Case in point: The locked-up loading screens facing droves of Sims players in the wake of The Sims 4: Lovestruck. It’s beyond frustrating to log in with hopes of playing the new expansion pack only to be stuck battling an infinite loading screen. Sims 4 veterans might even be familiar with this particular glitch from previous major updates in the long-standing game’s lifespan, but the good part is this means there are quite a few ways to get around the issue.     Gears 5 is an ambitious entry to the storied Xbox series, but the upcoming Gears of War: E-Day can build on its predecessor's introduction of "open-world" levels in a meaningful way. E-Day's official announcement trailer premiered at the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase and came as something of a surprise, as many expected a Gears of War 6 reveal. E-Day is instead a prequel focused on Marcus and Dom during Emergence Day, depicting the catastrophic beginning of the Locust War, 14 years before the events of the series' original game.     At least for now, games are a purely audiovisual medium, which can be somewhat limiting. It’s difficult for studios to properly simulate less tangible effects… like, for instance, hitting the bar a little too hard during a night out in your favorite virtual city. Most of the time, being ****** in games amounts to a visual filter, some mushier controls, and maybe a special voice line or two if you’re really lucky. As with any aspect of game-making, however, there are a few examples that manage to stand out and really place you in the shoes of someone who’s blown off saving the world to go get sloshed—although why you’d want to be there is anyone’s guess.
