  1. The beauty of cards is that they can be anything. You can slap together a working game with them in a couple of minutes. Take 12 blanks, doodle some faces and landscapes, and lo, you have a procedural narrative generator. Make some duplicates, invent a few rules and lo, you have systems. Conversely, the great drawback of cards - especially in those roguelite deckbuilders people have been churning out since Slay The Spire - is that everything can be reduced to them. For example: last night, I played a round of Fungi with my partner, Fungi being a charming tabletop foraging sim in which you gather scrumptious chantarelles and boletus from the forest floor. This morning I resumed playing Breachway, out now in early access, in which you guide a starship through a series of wartorn solar systems, with battles unfolding as a turn-based exchange of cards corresponding to ship components. 4. The story behind The Day Before is a bizarre one. Advertised as an MMO, it was at one point the most wishlisted game on Steam. Then, it launched, and everyone hated it. It wasn't even an MMO, and was much more akin to an extraction shooter - albeit a very basic one that fell apart very quickly due to bugs and performance issues. View the full article

  10. Valve has updated its new multiplayer game Deadlock to let players turn cheaters into a frog. Deadlock is a hero shooter that’s like a mash-up of all Valve’s previous games, including Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike. It’s in early development, with Valve updating all the time, which leads us to this week’s changes. This week’s Deadlock patch added a novel anti-cheat measure: turning a cheater into an in-game frog. If you spot a cheater in-game, you can either ban them or transform them for the rest of the match. Here’s the note in the patch notes: Added an initial Anti-Cheat detection system. When a user is detected as cheating, during the game session the opponents will be given a choice between banning the user immediately and ending the match or turning the cheater into a frog for the rest of the game and then banning them afterwards. The system is set to ************* detection levels as we work on a v2 anti-cheat system that is more extensive. We will turn on the banning of users in a couple of days after the update is out. When a match is ended this way, the results will not count for other players. And here’s how it looks: Guys do you ever get this weird glitch in deadlock [Hidden Content] — Poggu (@poggu__) September 26, 2024 According to ex-Counter-Strike developer Burton Johnsey, Valve built a system just like this for its legendary multiplayer shooter, codenamed '*** Surprise Mode,' but it turned cheaters into a chicken. Unfortunately it was never released. Holy *****, they finally built codename “*** Surprise Mode”?! When I worked on VAC, Rich and I designed this for CS but the cheater was a chicken. [Hidden Content] — BurtonJ (@sptonjohn) September 27, 2024 Deadlock isn’t properly released yet (it’s still invite only) but it’s already a big hit on Steam, where it’s usually in the top 10 most-played games. At the time of this article’s publication, Deadlock had an impressive 118,697 concurrent players on Valve’s platform. This week’s patch introduced a new Deadlock hero called Mirage, and made several map, hero, and item changes. Valve has yet to announce a release date. Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. The Dark Horizon DLC allows you to explore the Stagnant Manufactory, but there’s a tricky location where you need to navigate through toxic gases and a security room. 20. JRPGs are a dime a dozen, with Square Enix remastering or remaking the majority of its classics, while other developers like Level-5 and Atlus continue to produce sequels and new IPs, like Metaphor: ReFantazio, and Persona 5. However, while many JRPGs stick to the tropes of the genre, standout games like the Persona series dare to do something different, offering social sim elements and a more magic realism setting, like no other game out there. Naturally, many may think this would lead to numerous copycats, and while there have been some, few have truly nailed the brilliance of Persona 5. View the full article
  21. As befits the “very normal gardening game” that puzzly mystery box Grunn winkingly bills itself as, the first tool I obtained was a pair of shears. The second tool I obtained was a trumpet. It doesn’t really work like a trumpet, and it does things no regular trumpet could or should do. I got a trowel next. Here’s the thing about the trowel: it’s a pretty good trowel. Nothing fancy. But recently, I keep digging up… objects. Objects most peculiar. I’ve got the weekend to sort this garden, and a cosy little shed to sleep in, so I really should just get on with it. Again, though, I must reiterate: I keep digging up… objects. I go to clean some rubbish from the bathroom. I interact with the mirror and the game says: “You do not see anything in the mirror”. I take a note that says: I do not see anything in the mirror. I check the game again and no, I still do not see anything in the mirror. Sure it’s fine. Just a ***** mirror, probably. They should get it replaced. What good is a mirror you can’t see anything in? Read more View the full article
  22. Image: The Verge Steam just removed its forced arbitration policy, opening the door for lawsuits against its parent company, Valve. In an update on Thursday, Steam says its subscriber agreement “now provides that any disputes are to go forward in court instead of arbitration.” Many companies include a forced arbitration clause in their user agreement, waiving a person’s right to a trial in court. Arbitration involves settling a dispute outside a legal system before an impartial third party. This method is often faster but may not get the best results for consumers, as arbitrators don’t need to consider the law when issuing a decision. [/url] Many services put mandatory arbitration agreements in their terms of service, which people may not even read or fully... Continue reading… View the full article
