  1. Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors has said he must shoulder some of the blame for a “long list” of mistakes that led to a “painful” restructuring of the company. After several years of rapid expansion through mergers and acquisitions, Embracer announced last May that a $2 billion deal had collapsed at the last minute, leading it to embark on a nine-month restructuring programme that resulted in almost 1,400 job cuts, studio closures, and the cancellation of tens of games. The Swedish gaming giant and its CEO faced a backlash in the wake of the restructuring, which is now complete, and Wingefors told [Hidden Content] that a lot of the criticism levelled at him personally was probably fair. 2. A new update is now live for Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone, and while it’s light on content, there’s a potentially game-changing tweak included. MW3’s next large-scale content update isn’t due until next week, and today’s patch is especially light on changes for the battle royale mode, but this update has big implications for Ranked Play in MW3 multiplayer that could change the game’s landscape for certain CoD players. 3. Xbox’s latest Twitter giveaway may be its most awesome one yet, but its extreme exclusivity is also what makes it the most disappointing. This X-Men ’97-themed console and controller will go to one incredibly lucky person within the next few weeks as part of a giveaway. The genuinely fantastic revival of the animated series from the ’90s has been met with universal praise, and the design of this Xbox Series X captures its essence beautifully. View the full article
  4. 2XKO, the League of Legends fighting game, has shown off the newest champion making their debut on the game’s roster of fighters, Illaoi, and just like she is in League, Illaoi is set up to be a monstrous, unrelenting force with her golden idol and trademark tentacles. In a gameplay update shared by the devs, all of Illaoi’s abilities were shown off, including her two back-breaking supers, as well as her ultimate, To the Depths, in which she uses her spectral tentacles to drag enemies deep underwater, where they’ll come face-to-face with the visage of Illaoi’s kraken ****, Nagakaborous. 5. The DLC of Fallout 3 is a world of ups and downs all of its own. They each offer wild and weird stories from all corners of the wasteland. And now, we’re going to rank them and find out which is the best.5. Operation AnchorageImage: BethesdaOperation Anchorage is a fun combat-focused DLC that doesn’t feature much in the way of a story. It’s mostly a way to have a bunch of combat encounters in a setting that takes away all the items you’ve accrued so far. Essentially, you have to ****** off a ******** invasion in a VR simulation that may or may not be an accurate depiction of the actual events of the Liberation of Anchorage. In fairness, this is one of the most important events in the Fallout universe, and getting to experience it firsthand is neat. But overall it feels pretty forgettable, unfortunately. At least you get a winter-themed version of the T-51b armor which looks great.4. Mothership ZetaImage: BethesdaThis may very well be th...View the full article
  6. At the fundamental level, city building and grand strategy games aren't especially compelling. But it's the sights, the sounds, and scale that make games like Hearts of Iron, Civilization 6, Cities Skylines, and Frostpunk 2, come to life. The click-clack of laying down a building. The top-down view of your army. You begin with the details. Eventually, you sit back and marvel at the grandeur of what you've created. Ambitious and genre-blending, a new grand strategy game and city builder takes this ethos to the next level, and the first playtest is coming soon. Read the rest of the story... 7. Moon Studios has a lot of updates planned for No Rest for the Wicked during Early Access, one of them being plans to add a farming update. This will be good for players who are concerned about the amount of healing items available. No Rest for the Wicked will receive a farming update in the futureThomas Mahler, the CEO and creative director at Moon Studios, responded to a Twitter/X reply asking about the more chill aspects of this action RPG. The conversation suggested the idea of being able to sit at the bar in the Inn and drink, but it led to Mahler revealing Moon Studios’ plans to add a farming update to No Rest for the Wicked.Absolutely, we'll have a big farming update at some point where you'll also be able to buy farmhouses with farmland in ********** where you'll be able to plant seeds, etc. Will make it much easier to get potatoes, tomatoes, etc. for the higher tier foods! ?— thomasmahler (@thomasmahler) April 21, 2024Mahler announced that...View the full article
  8. Metaphor: ReFantazio is the next project from the Persona development team, but this fantasy RPG won’t copy Persona’s social systems exactly.Metaphor’s release date was finally revealed — October 11, 2024 on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox — and the development team shared more information about the game in a livestream as well. Metaphor: ReFantazio still has some of Persona’s social mechanics, but there’s one glaring omission: romance.Metaphor: ReFantazio won’t feature romance of any kind between the protagonist and the supporting cast. That doesn’t mean that the Social Link system from Persona is absent entirely, but you sadly won’t be able to date anyone during your Metaphor playthrough. The Social Link system from Persona does appear in Metaphor in a slightly different capacity, however. Instead of leveling up a Social Link and obtaining minor buffs and bonuses as you upgrade your Bond level with your allies, you’...View the full article
  9. Been taking some rides on the nostalgia train recently with X-Men '97? Xbox wants you to keep that locomotive chugging, as it's giving away a Series X themed around the show. While the MCU is yet to fully reintroduce the X-Men into its live action universe (or I guess multiverse these days), Disney has still brought a continuation of the original '90s X-Men series to its streaming service, X-Men '97. The revival more or less picks things up where the original series left off, continuing on the story that initially wrapped up back in 1997, with a mixture of a returning cast, as well as some new voices. But, if you're someone that has a big problem with an ex (sorry), then the custom Xbox Series X that Microsoft is giving away might not be for you. "Xbox and X-Men '97 have come together to bring you a very special Xbox Series X wrapped in a limited-edition comic inspired by the all-new series and created by Marvel writer Rich Douek and artist Paco Diaz," describes Xbox Wire about the console. "This thrilling 2-page story with full page cover is exclusive to the Xbox Series X, and features Cyclops leading the X-Men in a battle against Sentinels and Master Mold, with an Xbox Series X console making a special appearance in the Danger Room. Marking the first time an Xbox Series X has been wrapped by a comic book, this collaboration promises to immerse fans in a nostalgic journey through the world of the X-Men '97." 10. Stand by for a missive from RPS corporate parent ReedPop. Transmission begins! Ah, it's about gaming events. So, Reedpop's EGX expo and MCM Comic **** are joining forces. They'll both take place side-by-side in the ExCel London this year, on 25th-27th October. EGX, of course, will feature a bunch of classic and upcoming games, while Comic **** is laser-targeted at our respected allies in the world of on-paper image-based storytelling with speech bubbles. EGX's headline partner is TikTok this year, which makes this a perfect nexus of entertainment artforms. All we need is a puppetshow now and possibly a semaphore stand, and the ritual will be complete. Read more View the full article
  11. When it comes to games focused on goofy fun, Rumble Club is the new **** on the block. Developed by Lightfox Games and published by **** Mushroom, this goofy party brawler bears an obvious resemblance to cartoony physics-based titles like Fall Guys and Gang Beasts, throwing twenty players into an arena to duke it out in various challenges. It's easy and free to pick up and play, and the element of chaos means that even newcomers should have a good chance against veterans. View the full article
  12. Rumble Club is a new physics-based party brawler set on carving out a niche in a crowded market, and there's one element in particular that could help give it an edge. 13. 7 Days to ****, one of the longest-running open-world survival games on Steam, is finally launching into 1.0 after over a decade of early access development. While the game's community has fluctuated over the years, the zombie-themed game has retained a healthy playerbase since it first debuted in 2013 thanks to a relatively steady stream of updates and patches by developer The Fun Pimps. Despite the fact that the game's lengthy early access ******* has turned into somewhat of a meme, the studio is moving ahead with an official launch and its pulling out all the stops. 14. ******* for Love: Date to **** For is the midpoint of a planned trilogy that grew out of solo dev Akabaka's submission to Dread X Collection 2 back in 2020. The theme of the second lockdown game jam overseen by indie horror publisher DreadXP was "Lovecrafting", which Akabaka ran with to create a dating sim where you romance anime-esque waifus who are also eldritch goddesses inspired by deities described in the Cthulhu Mythos. The aim was to create a horror dating sim where the romanceable monsters were ***** and terrifying in equal measure, pulling no punches when it came to demonstrating the dreadful and often disgusting things a human would have to do to catch the romantic attentions of an incomprehensible cosmic being. This irresistible concept quickly led to a three-game deal between Akabaka and DreadXP, beginning with ******* for Love: First Date, an expansion on the original one-shot released in 2022. The second game, Date to **** For, is technically a prequel to First Date rather than a sequel; I say "technically" because timeline chronology doesn't have a huge amount of importance in reality-warping cosmic horror stories, and the fact that it definitely takes place before its predecessor is only revealed off-handedly near the end. Familiarity with the first game is far from mandatory to enjoy this one, although playing them in release order will furnish you with some useful context about characters and mechanics from the original that are riffed on in Date to **** For. However, the prequel focuses on an almost entirely new cast, with cameos from returning characters kept fairly low-key — a wise choice, given that Date to **** For has the potential for wider appeal than its predecessor, which was lauded in the niche circles of horror dating sim fans but never really broke out beyond that. 16. Amazon’s Fallout season one finished by concluding a few storylines, yet teased a few possible new ones in the second season. In one of the latest interviews, the series showrunners mentioned how they could unfold on top of an iconic story from the games. By the end of the season finale, we see Hank MacLean, father of the main protagonist, Lucy, flee to the city of New Vegas. The area seems almost devastated and lifeless, looking from the distance, and given the show is set 15 years after the events of Fallout: New Vegas, it’s bound to tie into the game’s storyline somehow. The showrunners, Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, implied season two will build upon the game’s events. View the full article

  18. Epic Games have allowed players to decide whether they see confrontational emotes in-game, something that has upset a lot the Fortnite community. Although this isn’t exactly a ban, those upset by it will treat it like such.Toxic gamers will go back to their roots in FortniteThe decision to allow players to decide whether they want to see confrontational emotes was doubtless done to curb the rage players feel when certain emotes are performed after getting defeated.Granted, there is something uniquely infuriating upon seeing someone flaunt their success whilst you’re forced to watch them after being defeated. This, however, isn’t something exclusive to Fortnite.Image: FortniteBefore the days of Battle Royale and emoting, players “trolled” ones they defeated through the iconic and precious art of “teabagging.” An exercise that’s been practiced throughout the ages. 19. I'm the kind of awful person who looks at the background actors in TV shows and wonders what life is like for e.g. the old woman who sells birdfeed in Trafalgar Square in Mary Poppins when said upper-middle class domestic isn't singing about her. What fate the Warcraft grunt when he is too old to work work? It's probably pretty bad, right? Now let me slop Innkeep down in front of you like a big bowl of rat stew. Developer Daniel Burke furnished me with a little playable slice, and boy, Innkeep is a grim old time. I mean that as a compliment. In it you run a big pub with room for a lot of grizzled adventurers, in a dog-eat-dog dark fantasy RPG sort of a world - think a roadside pub in one of the early seasons of Game Of Thrones, before everyone hated it. You do a lot of plate-spinning drudgery like cooking, cleaning, and serving, but also eavesdropping, rumourmongering, and knowing when to slip in a ribald joke as a distraction while you size up a mercenary's sword. 20. [/url] The "Laugh it Up" emote is one of four that can now be blocked using a setting in Fortnite. [credit: Epic Games ] For online players tired of being harassed by randos over voice chat, animated emotes have long served as a "safe" way to communicate in-game via simple, pre-approved non-verbal messages. In Fortnite, though, a few of those emotes have become so "confrontational" (as developer Epic puts it) that individual players can now choose to block them with an in-game settings toggle. The new "See Confrontational Emotes" setting, announced Tuesday, can be set to automatically block the appearance (and associated sound effects) of four emotes "that are sometimes used in confrontational ways," Epic wrote. Those four emotes are (links go to video examples): Laugh It UpTake the LWhipcrackMake It Plantain By default, the toggle will be set to only display these emotes from friends in an online party, Epic wrote. That setting can be changed to always allow or always block those emotes at any time. Read 6 remaining paragraphs | Comments View the full article
  21. Nestled within a seemingly ***-hum patch for Horizon Forbidden West’s PC edition is a change I’ve been crossing fingers and ritualistically sacrificing metal dinosaurs for since release. 22. The MSI Claw hasn't had the smoothest of launches. Intel's big push to cement a place in the burgeoning handheld gaming PC market arrived too late, with too little performance, and with too high a price. However, in some regions it's already seeing big price drops and now there's a new MSI Claw driver update that provides some much-needed performance improvements. The new MSI Claw driver update increases frame rates in games such as Helldivers 2, Diablo 4, and Hogwarts Leacy, as well as several other major recent titles. This doesn't immediately send the MSI device to the top of our best handheld gaming PC guide, but it could become a contender if we see further improvements quite soon. Read the rest of the story... 23. Steven Ogg, the actor who famously voiced Grand Theft Auto 5 protagonist Trevor Philips, recently stated that he recorded dialogue for a DLC campaign that was ultimately canceled. Grand Theft Auto 5 is considered to be one of the biggest and best video games ever made, and a large part of its success ***** in its memorable cast of characters. 24. No Rest for the Wicked is a fascinating new blend of Diablo-style ARPGs and soulslikes, but it's also a game that could use some improvements at the moment. With a gorgeous art style and fluid, expressive animations, No Rest for the Wicked is certainly attention-grabbing. As an early access release, however, it's a work-in-progress rather than a finished product, and its future should be focused on polishing what's currently there and adding new features on top of it. 25. Afternoon, conveyor belt fans! Good news, I think I may have discovered the first genuinely cosy automation game. Attempts have been made at cosy automation and automated cosiness in the past – Satisfactory is on the sunnier side, providing you enable the right settings, and Shapez 2 has lots of rounded edges. But IDK, there’s something about the ravages of mass industry that doesn’t quite gel with zoomorphic raccoon baristas and other such wholesome trappings. Have you ever encountered a cuddly smokestack? How about a cuddly just-in-time network? Combine cosiness with automation, and a lot of the time, you end up with some kind of macabre joke, like Palworld. Or at least so I thought before I discovered Sweet Transit, out now, which seemingly resolves everything by means of a hearty injection of trains. Read more View the full article
