  1. It's very common for farm sims to cite Stardew Valley as inspiration, which Mirthwood definitely does, but it's less common to see them name drop Fable, The Sims, and RimWorld. This upcoming sandbox-y farm sim RPG is definitely trying to tick a lot of boxes to give us farmlife sim lovers as much freedom as possible, and its new trailer shows off more farm customization, processing goods, and the demands of the winter season... 2. Take-Two is reportedly planning to shut down Private Division studios Roll7 and Intercept Games as part of recently announced restructuring. Last month, the publisher said it planned to lay off 5% of its workforce, or around 600 people, as part of cost-cutting measures that would also result in the cancellation of unnamed game projects. Two casualties of this restructuring are Roll7, the London-based developer behind OlliOlli and Rollerdrome, and Seattle-based Intercept Games, which developed Kerbal Space Program 2, according to documentation seen by Bloomberg. 3. beat[/i]."> Enlarge / It's a good thing this **** is too young to bet on Skee-Ball, because his dad is getting beat. (credit: Getty Images) [/url] Anyone who's been to a Dave & Buster's location in recent years knows the arcade's heavy reliance on so-called redemption games makes the experience more like an ersatz casino than the quarter-munching video game halls of the '70s and '80s. On the vast majority of D&B games, you end up wagering money (in the form of gameplay chips) to win virtual tickets that can be traded for trinkets at the rewards counter. Now, the massive arcade chain has announced that players will soon be able to use the D&B app to directly wager on the results of arcade games through "real-money contests." The arcade giant, which has over 200 locations across North America, is partnering with "gamification layer" platform Lucra on a system that will let D&B Rewards members "digitally compete with each other, earn rewards, and unlock exclusive perks while competing with friends at Dave & Buster’s," according to Tuesday's announcement. Neither Lucra nor Dave & Buster's has responded to a request for comment from Ars Technica, so we're still missing extremely basic information, like what games will support app-based wagering, minimum and maximum bet sizes, or what kinds of fees might be involved. CNBC's report on the announcement suggests the system will be launching "in the next few months" to players 18 and older across 44 states (and specifically mention Skee-Ball and Hot Shots Basketball competitions). Lucra's webpage simply says the integration will "provide... social connectivity and friendly competition," suggesting you'll probably face off against friends playing in the same location. 9. It's natural that everyone's been a little antsy about Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth lately. For weeks, analysts and fans have been discussing the game's potential underperformance compared to its predecessor, Remake, amid worries this might impact the future of the 7 Remake trilogy. Today, we got a little more data on what's really going on here - though the jury is still out on how publisher Square Enix is looking at the numbers. Today, Circana published its monthly video game consumer spending report for March, which offers insight on the U.S. market calculated by dollar sales. One of the more notable games in the rankings this month was Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, which reports have suggested isn't selling as well as Square Enix would like despite critical acclaim. Without actual sales figures, it's difficult to tell, and our analysis a few weeks ago indicated that it's doing....eh, fine, just not gangbusters. Today's Circana report paints a similarly perplexing picture. Rebirth is still the fourth best-selling game this year so far, but it's also the 14th best-selling Final Fantasy game ever - well behind Final Fantasy 15 in first place, Final Fantasy 7: Remake in second, and the original Final Fantasy 7 in third place. Granted, it's only had two months on the market on a single platform while the others have had multiple years on multiple platforms, so we can give it some grace there. We asked Circana analyst Mat Piscatella for a bit more context on what's going on with Rebirth's U.S. sales. He told us that Rebirth sales in the U.S. are down a double-digit percentage when compared to both Remake and Final Fantasy 16 over the same time in market - so that's not great. But he also noted, again, that Remake launched "at basically the best time to launch a video game in history, and on a different installed base, with all that built up anticipation." And he called the game's performance "not amazing, but also nowhere near terrible." Which is roughly what other experts have described to us before, and what U.K. sales numbers seem to suggest as well. Still, it's impossible to say whether "not terrible" will be enough for Square Enix. The publisher has announced it's preparing to take a $140 million hit in "content abandonment losses" due to canceled games in the last fiscal year, and it ******** unclear how much of this will impact Final Fantasy 7's remake trilogy, if it will at all. And it's admittedly a little jarring to see Rebirth in light of Circana's reported sales for fellow action RPG Dragon's Dogma 2, which pulled 11x the amount of dollar sales the original Dragon's Dogma did, and has already surpassed the combined life-to-date sales of both Dragon's Dogma and Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen combined. It's only been out for a month, and it's the second-best-selling game of the year in the US. That's a pretty stark difference...but again, Dragon's Dogma 2 released across three platforms: PC, Xbox, and PS5. Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth is PS5 exclusive. As for the rest of the month in video games, Helldivers 2 is still the best-selling game of the year so far and is the 7th best-selling Sony-published game of all time, after just two months. Dragon's Dogma 2 was the best-selling game of March, followe dby Helldivers 2, MLB The Show 24, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Rise of the Ronin in order. Princess Peach: *********! debuted at No.6 (digital sales excluded as usual), Unicorn Overlord debuted at No.8, and WWE 2K24 debuted at No.9 (digital sales excluded). Also notably, Horizon 2: Forbidden West saw a massive jump in March from the No.107 best-selling game in February to No.14, likely thanks to its launch on PC. Stardew Valley on PC and Sifu on PS5 also saw significant player spikes in March. In total, video game sales were up 4% year-over-year largely thanks to mobile content, while hardware sales dropped 32% year-over-year with all console platform spending down 30% or more. The PS5 remained the best-selling console in both unit and dollar sales. Rebekah Valentine is a senior reporter for IGN. Got a story tip? Send it to [email protected]. View the full article

  25. Intercept Games is among the many casualties of Take-Two Interactive's layoffs, as its parent company is laying off 70 people from the developer behind the Kerbal Space Program 2. As reported by [Hidden Content], a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice was filed in Washington state this past Monday, revealing that Take-Two Interactive was laying off 70 workers based in Seattle as part of a closure. Though the WARN notice lists Take-Two specifically, the developer impacted in question appears to be Intercept Games, a studio based in Seattle. Intercept Games did not immediately respond to IGN's request for comment, though the studio's website did have three job postings based in Seattle. In a statement sent to IGN, a Take-Two spokesperson did not explicitly confirm Intercept Games' closure, reiterating that it was not "providing additional details" on its plans to reduce staff across all its studios. However, the company revealed that the publisher, Private Division, will provide post-launch support for Kerbal Space Program 2, as the developer is seemingly shuttered. You can read the statement from Take-Two Interactive below. On April 16th, Take-Two announced a cost reduction program to identify efficiencies across its business and to enhance the Company’s margin profile, while still investing for growth. As part of these efforts, the Company is rationalizing its pipeline and eliminating several projects in development and streamlining its organizational structure, which will eliminate headcount and reduce future hiring needs. The Company is not providing additional details on this program. On April 18th Private Division successfully launched Moon Studio’s No Rest for the Wicked. The label continues to make updates to Kerbal Space Program 2 and plans to release Wētā Workshop Game Studio’s Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game in the second half of 2024. Take-Two Interactive announced last month that it was laying off around 5 percent, or 579 workers, while canceling several projects. The announcement came months prior when CEO Strauss Zelnick claimed the company had "no plans" to lay off anyone but did reveal that it was undertaking a cost reduction plan. Kerbal Space Program 2 was released over a year ago in early access. A sequel to 2015's Kerbal Space Program, the sequel has been met with mixed reception from critics and players, with some at release criticizing poor performance and bugs as its most significant drawbacks. The video game industry has been racked with layoffs, with EA, PlayStation, and Xbox among those affected. You can read our full report here. Taylor is a Reporter at IGN.
