  6. If you’ve played any number of RPGs, you probably know the skill tree as a break from the game’s core action. It’s a place to pause, take a breather, and scroll through a massive visual menu of upgrade options, considering which path of stat and ability tweaks best fits your character and your play style. With Skigill, indie developer Achromi has taken that break-time menu and transformed it into the playing field for an intriguing Vampire Survivors-style roguelike. And while the Early Access game currently lacks the kind of deep content that will keep players coming back for a long time, it’s still a clever and engaging take on the genre that I haven’t been able to put down for long. Clear the way, I need +5 armor! Like Vampire Survivors and its many imitators, Skigill is all about navigating through waves of enemies that converge somewhat mindlessly on your position. The game automatically aims and deploys weapons to carve some safe space through what can be screens full of hazardous enemies, which leave behind coins as they explode in puffs of yellow smoke. 7. Free League Publishing has just opened pre-orders for a new supplement themed around Saruman the White, for both its D&D 5e based Lord of the Rings Roleplaying system, and The One Ring RPG. Though the supplement has a different name in each game system - Trials of Saruman for D&D, Hands of the White Wizard in The One Ring - both are lengthy campaigns set before the War of the Ring that will see the players keep close company with the head of the White Council. His designs challenge the player, requiring several playthroughs to fully uncover their vision. 11. Retro-futuristic puzzler UnLoop reaches PC VR in early access next week. Published by CM Games (Into the Radius) and developed by Superposition NULL, UnLoop is a sci-fi puzzle game built around self-cooperation and time manipulation that's reminiscent of We Are One. Set on a remote space station called the Temporal Research Hub, you create copies of yourself each loop and replay your past actions in real time as you retrieve data. Following its full release on Quest and Pico, CM Games has chosen early access on Steam to gather feedback about “optimization, player experience, graphics, and to address possible PCVR-related feature requests.” It still contains content parity with the standalone edition, and a Version 1.1 update is planned this December that promises new puzzles and a story continuation. On the hardware side, UnLoop on Steam will initially support using Quest, Pico and Valve Index headsets. A Steam FAQ confirms the developer will explore compatibility with additional headsets and controllers depending on community feedback, and PC VR visual improvements are also planned. We had positive impressions in our UnLoop hands-on back in September, considering it a “clever self-co-op experience” held back by a “few rough edges.” UnLoop looks to be a promising head-scratcher for players who love time-looping puzzles and self-orchestrated hijinks. Its core concept is compelling and clever, but a few rough edges keep it from being a standout recommendation just yet. With a bit of polish and hopefully some patches, this could be one to loop back to. UnLoop is out now on Quest and Pico, and the Steam Early Access launch will follow on November 13. 12. Cygames and Konami Digital Entertainment announced today that they have resolved their patent disagreement regarding Cygames’ mobile title Umamusume: Pretty Derby. Umamusume: Pretty Derby is a hugely popular anime racehorse-girl management game in which racehorses are reborn as cute anime girls, complete with equine ears and tails. The franchise started off in 2018 as an anime, followed by a Japan-only release of the mobile game in 2021. In the game, players can talk to, train and manage horse-girls like Special Week and Mejiro McQueen, sharing in their triumphs and losses. As a result, the Umamusume franchise has inspired a cult following, and many fans have become interested in the real-life Japanese racehorses behind their favorite characters. Back in March 2023, Konami filed a lawsuit against Cygames, claiming that Cygame’s Umamusume: Pretty Derby infringed upon 18 of its patents. Konami originally called for over 4 billion yen (approx. $26 million at current exchange rates) in damages, and for Cygames to cease all production, usage and distribution of the mobile game. In response, Cygames requested invalidation trials against all the patents involved. Cygames revealed in a press release today that it has decided to settle the disagreement to ensure that players can continue to enjoy Umamusume: Pretty Derby in the long run. Despite this decision, Cygames “remains confident that no patent infringement has occurred.” Both Konami and Cygames expressed respect for each other’s creators and games in their press releases about the settlement. Cygames stated that their group company “respects the efforts of creators at companies in the game industry, including Konami Digital Entertainment, and the numerous games they have created.” In turn, Konami commented that “we will respect each other’s creative works and strive to provide content and services that please our customers.” According to a press release from 2023, Cygames had been in discussion with Konami about patent rights “pertaining to certain aspects of Umamusume: Pretty Derby’s game systems and programs,” however, it seems Konami disagreed with Cygames and filed the lawsuit. Both companies have been secretive about exactly which aspects of Umamusume: Pretty Derby caused the disagreement. Considering Konami’s history of making sports management games like Powerful Pro Baseball, it is possible that Umamusume: Pretty Derby’s in-game system for training its anime horse girls was part of the issue. Both companies stress that due to a confidentiality agreement, the details of the settlement will not be made public. 16. In what would be an unprecedented shock move, Nvidia could be cancelling its upcoming RTX 5000 Super series of graphics cards, according to a new rumor. That would mean potential cards, such as the RTX 5080 Super and RTX 5070 Super, won't arrive soon or perhaps ever, potentially dashing the hopes of many gamers who had been holding out for these upgrades. The Super refresh of Nvidia GPUs has been a regular occurrence for the last few generations of the company's graphics cards, with the RTX 2000, 3000, and 4000 series all launching with an initial lineup, then being followed up by a Super series a year or so later. The RTX 5000 Super series had been particularly anticipated, as it was expected to resolve one of the most complained-about issues with the current generation of cards, which is a lack of VRAM. However, it's now claimed that this very VRAM upgrade could cause the next Super series to be delayed or cancelled. Read the rest of the story... The latest wave of miniatures for Warhammer rival Warcrow is available to pre-order right now, and I want to shout out a few of the miniatures that have particularly grabbed me - the new officers and special character for the Scions of Yaldabaoth. Warcrow doesn't have any truly 'evil' factions but the Scions are the most extreme, a radically free society of elven wizards that co-exist with the mutagenic mist blanketing the world of Lindwurm - and the miniatures designers working on the game have cut loose with the sincerity of a teenager drawing the sickest OC ever in the corner of their school workbook. 23. Amid confirmation that GTA 6 really has been delayed again, we have word that Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 has become the fourth best-selling game of all time. As detailed in publisher Take-Two's investor call yesterday (November 6), the sequel has sold over 79 million units — making it the "best-selling title of the last seven years in the U.S. based on dollar sales" — and taking sales of the entire series to 106 million. To give that some context, think of all the hugely successful games that have been released in the last seven years — Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring, to name but a few — as well as everything that's released over the last few decades. Apart from Minecraft, GTA 5, and Wii Sports, which have sold 350 million, 220 million, and 82.9 million copies, respectively, Red Dead Redemption 2 has outsold everything. With 79 million sales, that puts Red Dead 2 just ahead of the prior fourth-place Mario Kart 8's estimated 78.02 million sales, as well as PUBG (75 million), The Oregon Trail (65 million), Terraria (64 million), The Witcher 3 (60 million), and the original 1985 Super Mario Bros. (58 million). You'd think then, that Red Dead Redemption 3 is a dead cert. But Rockstar has yet to announce a sequel. Earlier this week, Rockstar Games co-founder and former lead writer Dan Houser said he’d feel more sad to learn Red Dead Redemption 3 was in development without him than he feels about GTA 6, but admits the game "will probably happen." As lead writer, Houser wrote almost all of Rockstar’s games, but having left the company over five years ago, Houser recently confirmed to IGN that GTA 6 won’t have a story or a character set he developed, but expects the game to be great nonetheless. “Of course, letting go of something I worked on in one way or another for like 20-odd years, and wrote on them for the last 10 or 11 that came out, wrote all of them, or you know, lead writer on all of them, whatever it was… letting go of that is a big change. And sad in a way,” Houser said. “Because each of the [Grand Theft Auto] games was a kind of standalone story it’s not quite the same as… I think probably it would be in some ways sadder if someone continued on Red Dead, because it was a cohesive two-game arc. That might be more sad to hear someone working on that. But again, that will probably happen too. I don't own the IP. That was part of the deal. It's a privilege to work on stuff, but you don't necessarily own it.” In 2023, Roger Clark, who played Arthur Morgan, the main playable protagonist of Red Dead Redemption 2, said he was “certain” fans will see Red Dead Redemption 3 “one day,” but qualified that statement by saying he had no idea when that would be. Clark also ruled out the return of Arthur Morgan in the game, should it come to be. If you’ve played Red Dead Redemption 2, this might seem like stating the obvious, but there’s always the chance Rockstar may consider another prequel of some kind. “I’m certain we will see Red Redemption 3 one day,” Clark said. “When that will be — I have absolutely no idea. Don’t count on Arthur’s involvement either. His story has been told, I feel.” In a subsequent interview with IGN, Clark expanded on his thoughts: “Yeah, that got really picked up! I would have thought that was obvious though. Wouldn’t you? And it’s not like I have any insider information whatsoever, but of course there’s going to be another Red Dead. It sold over 60 million copies!” He continued: “Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two said it himself. He said GTA and Red Dead are prominent franchises for Rockstar Games and that they will be returning to them in the future. So there’s no doubt there will be another Red Dead. But if Arthur Morgan will be involved? I highly doubt it, to be honest. And I think it’s going to be quite some time before we even see a snifter of anything new Red Dead related. I have no idea how it would pan out, but I wouldn’t bet on Arthur being a part of it.” Today, Red Dead Redemption 2 is widely considered to be one of the best video games of all time. We thought it was a masterpiece, too, with IGN's review returning a 10/10. "Red Dead Redemption 2 is a game of rare quality; a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era," we wrote.
