  1. Developer Omeda Studios has been hard at work iterating Predecessor, its free-to-play sci-fi MOBA shooter, adding new characters and Brawl mode, which is the perfect way for new players to jump in. Predecessor is looking to provide a refreshing experience with a new action-packed mode that is a great way to experience the diverse and multi-talented cast of playable characters - without being overwhelmed by the options, either. 2. The '80s just seems to be repeating on loop, as Apple finally confirms the release date for its TV adaptation of Time Bandits. Look, I get it, to some of you, the '80s was this fun decade that reinvented pop culture, but to someone that wasn't even born then, seeing nostalgia for it or reboots from that era is just starting to feel a bit rote. But, here we are, with an announcement from Apple that its "first-ever television adaptation of cult classic" Time Bandits is finally out this coming July 24. The series will of course be streaming on the hardware and software maker's Apple TV+, so you'll have to add another subscription to your list if you are at all interested in checking out this remake. The series is also notably led by Flight of the Conchords' Jermaine Clement, The Inbetweeners' Iain Morris, and Our Flag Means ******'s Taika Waititi, so it's possible it'll be a little funny at the very least. Apple writes of the show in a press release, "guided by Lisa Kudrow, the eccentric crew of bandits embark on epic adventures while evil forces threaten their conquests and life as they know it. As the group transports through time and space, the gang stumbles upon fascinating worlds of the distant past while seeking out treasure, depending on Kevin to shed light on each situation. The Time Bandits witness the creation of Stonehenge, see the ******* Horse in action, escape dinosaurs in the prehistoric ages, wreak havoc during medieval times, experience the ice age, ancient civilizations, the Harlem Renaissance, and much more along the way." 4. A new trademark filing with the ********* Intellectual Property Office suggests that Journey to the Savage Planet 2 is in development. The original game was one of the first titles to join Google's Stadia Games and Entertainment lineup in 2020. And despite its small budget, it met the publishers' sales expectations. However, like other Google-acquired games, Journey to the Savage Planet was abandoned by the tech giant when Stadia was shut down. View the full article
  5. Life by You's early access launch has been delayed again, publisher Paradox Interactive has announced. The upcoming title, which could rival the next entry in Electronic Arts' beloved The Sims franchise, was supposed to become publicly available in early June. View the full article
  6. The music in haunting 2D adventure Norco was so good it’s one of the few soundtracks I’ve actually bought on Steam, so I’m deeply intrigued to learn that developer Geography of Robots are putting music - and dancing - front and center in the new demo for their next project, Silenus. You can bop your way between screens, reader! Read more View the full article
  7. Starfield's modding community is straight-up cooking, now. While we're still a little ways out from Star Wars: Outlaws (and those overpriced editions have me a smidge nervous), don't worry—we've got space gunslinging at home... Read more.View the full article
  8. Good news, people who enjoy it when video games bring back things people used to like many years ago in the hopes that you'll still like them now you're a lot older. NFS Underground-inspired drag and drift events have arrived in Need For Speed: Unbound today, May 21, as part of the latest update to the series' most recent entry. We originally learned that these modes would be coming to the game via the release roadmap back in February, which outlined a year of in-game stuff designed to help celebrate NFS turning 30 in December. Now, however, since they're actually here, there's more info regarding what they look like, so let's get into it. As outlined in the blog post announcing its arrival, Vol. 7: Drift & Drag brings those two classic modes to Unbound, with a couple of changes designed to help bring them up to date with what racing games can do in 2024. 10. I could pretend I understand Square Enix's action-RPG series Kingdom Hearts, but I don't need to, 'cos what I do understand is how popular it is. Until fairly recently the nearly 15-game-strong series, where Disney characters cross over with Final Fantasy and go to war alongside a child wielding a key (I said I don't properly understand it), wasn't on PC. After some games arrived on the Epic Games Store in 2021, Squeenix have confirmed that multiple Kingdom Hearts games are coming to Steam next month, on June 13th. Unlucky for some, maybe, but not Donald Duck and Goofy, two of the main characters. Long has Goofy been seen as just a joke character in the minds of people people who didn't watch A Goofy Movie. Hopefully this brings his heroism to a wider audience. Read more View the full article
  11. Turns out that the Margot Robbie led Pirates of the Caribbean movie is still happening, but it's a separate one from the upcoming reboot. It's been a good seven years since the last Pirates of the Caribbean film, which in one part makes me feel a bit old, but in another makes me think "hang on, they were making those films right through to 2017?" Back in March, franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer spoke of his intention to reboot the series because that's "easier to put together because you don't have to wait for certain actors." This reboot wasn't thought to include Robbie in it, as back in 2022 in an interview with Vanity Fair she said that she guessed Disney didn't want to do it anymore despite development taking place for it. However, in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bruckheimer clarified what the intention is with the franchise: "It's two different movies." One of them is still the reboot he previously mentioned, which should have 2019's The Lion King writer Jeff Nathanson attached to it. And the other is the film that Robbie was meant to star in, with Birds of Prey's Christina Hodson penning it. "We hope to get 'em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too." Obviously there's questions as to whether Robbie is even aware of this intention, but considering just how well Barbie performed last year, it isn't exactly surprising that Disney wants a cut of that Robbie star power. 12. The PC version of Kingdom Hearts has been locked away on the Epic Games Store ever since 2021 but fortunately, those patient Steam users who held out hope that the series would one day land on Valve's storefront have been rewarded. A bizarre mash-up of Disney and Final Fantasy, the adventures of Sora, Donald, and Goofy have leaped from platform to platform ever since the original game debuted on the PlayStation 2 in 2002. It took nearly two decades for the trilogy, and the various spinoffs, to drop on PC but even then, Epic's exclusivity was a dealbreaker for many. 13. Microsoft has reportedly approved a new game from Hellblade 2 developer Ninja Theory and has no plans to close the studio. Windows Central reports that this new game from the Cambridge, ***-based developer is in addition to Project Mara, the already announced upcoming psychological horror game that takes place entirely in a single upscale apartment. There are no plans whatsoever to close the studio any time soon, Windows Central added. IGN has asked Microsoft for comment. Microsoft today releases Ninja Theory’s Hellblade 2 four-and-a-half years after it was announced and six years after Microsoft bought the studio, bringing it into the Xbox Game Studios fold. IGN’s Hellblade 2 review returned an 8/10. We said: “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is another Viking-worthy feast for the senses that meets the high bar set by its predecessor, even if it never really manages to clear it.” Yesterday, a day before launch, Ninja Theory studio head Dom Matthews issued a heartfelt statement to fans, expressing gratitude for their support, along with the development team for working on Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2. Some have expressed concern for Ninja Theory after Microsoft shocked the video game world by announcing the closure of a number of Bethesda studios, including Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks and Redfall developer Arkane Austin. The cuts come as part of sweeping layoffs announced earlier this year that affect 1,900 staff at Microsoft’s gaming business. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has indicated that Microsoft’s gaming cuts are the result of a video game market that is failing to grow amid rising development costs, but Spencer and other Xbox executives are also reportedly under pressure to make cuts following the company’s $69 billion acquisition of Call of Duty maker Activision Blizzard. In an email to staff sent by Matt ******, head of Xbox Game Studios, Microsoft blamed the Bethesda cuts on a “reprioritization of titles and resources.” In the email, first reported by IGN, ****** said: “we are making these tough decisions to create capacity to increase investment in other parts of our portfolio and focus on our priority games.” Earlier this month, Xbox president Sarah Bond responded to questions about Microsoft’s decision to shut a number of much-loved studios, insisting it was about ensuring the Xbox business ******** healthy for the long-term during what she called “this moment of transition.” Microsoft is set to host an Xbox showcase event in June as well as fully unveil the next mainline Call of Duty game, ****** Ops 6. As I gasp for air and frantically kick towards the surface of the ocean with what feels like a million voices flooding my brain, I'm instantly plunged deep into the sensory overload that is Hellblade 2. 16. Where are the Hellblade 2 Lorestangir locations? Senua's Saga might take her to the distant shores of Iceland, but it'll take more than that to get rid of our old buddy Druth. Hellblade 2 Lorestangir are the equivalent of Lorestones from Senua's Sacrifice. These collectible totems contain a fragment of the skáldic verse of Grettir the Strong, narrated by Druth. There are 18 Lorestangir in Hellblade 2 in total, and they can be located in chapters one through five. You can activate the Lorestangir using your Focus ability, just like Hellblade 2 faces. Once activated, the rune displayed turns red and Druth narrates the relevant fragment of the skald's verse. Like the Norse tales told during Senua's descent into Hel in Senua's Sacrifice, Grettir's verse offers a new way of interpreting the events of Senua's Saga. Here's where to find the Hellblade 2 Lorestangir locations in the story game, so you can hear Druth's story for yourself and reap the rewards. Read the rest of the story... 17. Where are the Hellblade 2 faces? Senua's Saga is all about perspective, and Hellblade 2's hidden collectibles certainly force you to look at the environment differently. These rock formations resemble human faces and unlock stories that explore many of the notable trickster gods, spirits, and monsters that spell ***** and misfortune in Icelandic folklore. Like Druth's stories, these Norse tales recontextualize Senua's Saga within the history and culture in which it takes place. There are 17 faces to find in Hellblade 2, and many are tough to spot. They appear in chapters two through five in the story game, and you can reveal the hidden path behind them using your Focus ability. However, it's important to bear in mind that Hellblade 2 faces are only marked as collected once you've used Focus to activate the tree of Yggdrasil that ***** beyond. Here's where to find the Hellblade 2 faces - we also recommend looking out for the Hellblade 2 Lorestangir along the way. Read the rest of the story... 18. Risk Of Rain 2 is one of my fave action roguelikes, as it's a good time with pals and has all the hallmarks of things I enjoy most in my games: ********* and looting. That's why the latest free update excites me so, as it introduces an artifact that makes chests malicious and another that lets you hatch ****** lizard companions. Oh, and there's a new map, too. 20. The neighbourhood citizens of Life By You are positioning themselves as bright-eyed pretenders to The Sims. But in this ultimate game of keeping-up-with-the-Jones, the life sim from Paradox has slipped on a wet kitchen tile. The game has been delayed for a third time, and the developers are reluctant to set a new date for the planned release into early access. "[We] believe it is more prudent to hold off while we plan ahead," said Mattias Lilja of Paradox Interactive, "rather than committing to a new date that we cannot be certain to meet." 21. The cost of crafting Masterworking transmutation caches was significantly reduced in Diablo 4’s May 19 update. While some players believe this is a good change, others aren’t sure if it’s enough to reduce the significant gold grind. Masterworking, which improves an item’s affixes by upgrading individual ranks using three crafting materials: Obducite, Ingolith, and Neathiron, can be refined and exchanged at an alchemist for transmutation mastering caches. Previously, this cost up to six million gold. But now, after the May 19 update, it only costs up to 60,000 gold to craft the most expensive Large Ingolith Cache at the alchemist. 22. To borrow a tired Xitterism: The Venn diagram between ‘games that have reference points outside of other games’ and ‘games I’m likely to get excited about’ is a circle. For the benefit of people who’ve discovered the one weird trick that therapists hate and improved their mental health tenfold by deleting the bad place, here’s an incredibly cool thread I stumbled upon this morning where indie developers share non-game influences on their projects. 23. Pay-to-win mechanics in video games are a huge topic of debate, so it was refreshing to hear Ubisoft promise its latest free-to-play tactical shooter, XDefiant, won’t be pay-to-win. But despite the developer’s assurance, players aren’t convinced—and for good reason. On May 17, Ubisoft published a blog post about XDefiant’s monetization system, but commenters argued the post is merely a cleverly-worded “meaningless” promise that masks reality. For example, while Ubisoft’s post says there aren’t any pay-to-win mechanics, it also says: “Any gameplay impacting content that is purchasable is also unlockable through challenges to ensure fair play amongst our community.” View the full article
