Hasbro has announced through a recent earnings report that Monopoly Go - the immensely popular video game from Scopely - has brought in over 3 billion dollars in revenue since its release in April last year. That's over 15 million times past go, folks. An absurd amount of money. This continues a trend of wild milestones for the mobile game, which previously pass the 1 billion mark only seven months after its launch. What's interesting with that figure is that it indicates not only that Monopoly Go is maintaining its momentum post-launch, but actually ramping up the income it generates over time. One only wonders if this trend can continue, or if Monopoly Go will soon taper off. Commenting on the milestone in the Hasbro Q2 financial report, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks stated: " Since launch, the game has grossed over $3 billion in revenue, making Hasbro the top licensor of video games over the past year according to Aldora. The team continues to have an active pipeline of licensing opportunities across PC, console, mobile and casino, leveraging our rich IP." Read more View the full article

Image: The Verge Valve has introduced some changes to Steam that should make it easier to find and install playable game demos. In a new events blog post, Steam said the “Great Steam Demo Update” was based on developer and player feedback, with new functionality that makes demos behave more like standalone games hosted on the platform. For one, demos can now have a store page that’s completely separate from the main game, allowing developers to display demo-specific content like trailers, screenshots, and supported features. These pages will also display buttons to both install the demo and visit the main game’s store page, and allow players to leave demo-specific reviews. And if a demo becomes available for a game that users have on their wishlists, or... Continue reading… View the full article

Hero shooter Marvel Rivals hit San Diego Comic-**** 2024 with a long list of announcements, including story details, new character reveals, and the voice cast. During a Marvel Games presentation at SDCC, developer NetEase showed attendees trailers for the Marvel Rivals story, as well as a feature on Thor and Jeff the Landshark, who join the roster of playable characters on July 29. As you’d expect, Thor, the **** of Thunder, brings his powerful hammer and lightning abilities, while Jeff the Land Shark adds… his own unique charm and ferocity to the game. Marvel Rivals is a free-to-play superhero team-based PvP shooter in the Overwatch style, with fan-favorite characters such as Spider-Man, ****** Panther, and Doctor Strange available to play. The closed beta, which ends on August 5, is available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox with cross-play and cross-region support. It's yet another entry in the already crowded hero shooter genre, but it looks like Marvel Rivals may make an impact, if the interest in the closed beta is anything to go by. The closed beta has already posted impressive player numbers on Steam, hitting a peak of 52,671 concurrents since it went live on July 23. Sony and Microsoft do not reveal player numbers for PlayStation or Xbox consoles, respectively. Meanwhile, the Marvel Rivals voice cast includes Cassandra Lee Morris (Persona 5’s Morgana) as Galacta, Troy Baker as Loki, Nolan North as Rocket Raccoon, Yuri Lowenthal as Spider-Man, and Mara Junot as Storm. Other playable characters include Groot, The Punisher, Hela, Iron Man, Magneto, and Venom. While the focus here is very much on PvP gameplay, Marvel Rivals does feature a narrative, which revolves around heroes and villains uniting against a “looming cosmic threat.” Doctor ***** is set up as the antagonist. Video game voice actors represented by SAG-AFTRA - one of America's biggest actors' unions - are going on strike. After over a year of negotiations with some of the biggest western publishers including Activision Blizzard, EA, and Take Two, negotiations have reached a standstill over one of the more controversial points of debate: AI. AI has proven to be an industry-shaking technical development within the voice acting space. New AI software is able to train on pre-existing performances, and use this pool of voice acting work to output its own lines. For video game companies this provides an opportunity to own a quick and easy voice-acting solution, but for the actors themselves it's an extistential threat. One that not only uses their own copyrighted performances as building blocks, but threatens their jobs. As for what studios will be affected, you've got the following: Take Two (Grand Theft Auto 6), Activision (Call of Duty: ****** Ops 6), Insomniac (Marvel's Spider-Man 2), Electronic Arts (FIFA), and third party voice acting studio Formosa Interactive. The extent of the impact to each company ******** unclear, but the facts of the matter is that any union voice actors working with these businesses will no longer do so until SAG-AFTRA says otherwise or a deal is made. Earth Defense Force 6, the latest entry in the long-running franchise that inspired the likes of Helldivers 2, is out on Steam. It’s already facing hardship, however, as players are pummeling it with negative reviews due to its mandatory Epic Games sign-up. EDF 6 was initially released for PlayStation in 2022 and spent a couple of years there before recently migrating to Steam on July 25. It was immediately met with a sharp negative reaction from players as the game requires everyone to sign in with an Epic Games account to access some online elements. Some Steam reviews claimed the game didn’t mention the Epic Games requirement on its Steam page, leading to their being surprised when the prompt came up. Though the requirement has since been added to the game’s listing page, developer Sandlot has issued a response to the backlash and apologized for not mentioning this sooner. View the full article
After spending a long while in limbo, Skarner finally got the attention he deserves in a rework. But it seems its effects weren’t long-lasting, as the champion’s popularity has already fallen to below pre-rework levels. As pointed out by Reddit user bodynasr in a July 25 thread, Skarner’s pick rate in the jungle has dropped below 0.62 percent—a tad lower than his pre-rework self. According to lolalytics, the champion was picked in the jungle role nearly 90 percent of the time in Patch 14.6 prior to his rework. View the full article
