JRPGs are a dime a dozen, with Square Enix remastering or remaking the majority of its classics, while other developers like Level-5 and Atlus continue to produce sequels and new IPs, like Metaphor: ReFantazio, and Persona 5. However, while many JRPGs stick to the tropes of the genre, standout games like the Persona series dare to do something different, offering social sim elements and a more magic realism setting, like no other game out there. Naturally, many may think this would lead to numerous copycats, and while there have been some, few have truly nailed the brilliance of Persona 5. View the full article
As befits the “very normal gardening game” that puzzly mystery box Grunn winkingly bills itself as, the first tool I obtained was a pair of shears. The second tool I obtained was a trumpet. It doesn’t really work like a trumpet, and it does things no regular trumpet could or should do. I got a trowel next. Here’s the thing about the trowel: it’s a pretty good trowel. Nothing fancy. But recently, I keep digging up… objects. Objects most peculiar. I’ve got the weekend to sort this garden, and a cosy little shed to sleep in, so I really should just get on with it. Again, though, I must reiterate: I keep digging up… objects. I go to clean some rubbish from the bathroom. I interact with the mirror and the game says: “You do not see anything in the mirror”. I take a note that says: I do not see anything in the mirror. I check the game again and no, I still do not see anything in the mirror. Sure it’s fine. Just a ***** mirror, probably. They should get it replaced. What good is a mirror you can’t see anything in? Read more View the full article
Image: The Verge Steam just removed its forced arbitration policy, opening the door for lawsuits against its parent company, Valve. In an update on Thursday, Steam says its subscriber agreement “now provides that any disputes are to go forward in court instead of arbitration.” Many companies include a forced arbitration clause in their user agreement, waiving a person’s right to a trial in court. Arbitration involves settling a dispute outside a legal system before an impartial third party. This method is often faster but may not get the best results for consumers, as arbitrators don’t need to consider the law when issuing a decision. [/url] Many services put mandatory arbitration agreements in their terms of service, which people may not even read or fully... Continue reading… View the full article

Overwatch 2 is returning to the world of anime with a crossover event themed around the beloved My Hero Academia franchise. As a part of the competitive shooter's attempt to better engage with its audience, Overwatch 2 has begun dipping its toes into the world of IP collaboration, a move that has resulted in some fun character designs but has also managed to irk the player base. Much like the Cowboy Bebop crossover, the My Hero Academia skins can only be purchased with premium currency, alienating the free-to-play community. View the full article
Obsidian, as a studio, is both currently and understandably quite busy on Avowed—an RPG it's been very keen to remind you isn't Skyrim. It also made the Pillars of Eternity games (the world of which Avowed is set in), and while the second entry of the CRPG enjoyed critical success, it didn't sell as well as one might hope... EA Sports FC 25 has landed, and while this year's edition doesn't receive a drastic overhaul, the fastest players remain critical to your chances of victory on the pitch. Alongside strength, the fastest players have long been meta in the series, with them able to break clear of the opposition regardless of the other players' abilities. Since the series moved away from FIFA last year, several tweaks have been made to the gameplay, but the core game will feel familiar to long-time fans of the series. View the full article

Sometimes when I play strategy games, I can't help feeling like I'm clocking into work. Managing roads, budgets, and garbage collection in Cities Skylines 2 is brutally hard. The pressures of leadership in Civilization and Manor Lords are relentless. I like depth and detail, and a sense that everything I achieve is the product of ingenuity and time, but 'fun' in 4X and RTS games is highly subjective. Enter Planet Coaster 2. From Theme Park to RollerCoaster Tycoon, ScreamRide and beyond, the amusement builder has been a staple of strategy and PC gaming. What Frontier has achieved, at least based on my initial play test, is a smart mix of all the genre's mechanical staples topped with an unusual, unbridled joy. Read the rest of the story... The Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 specs have just leaked, according to the latest word in the rumor mill, along with the RTX 5080 specs too. If these leaks are genuine, the new flagship Nvidia gaming GPU looks like a seriously powerful monster, but the RTX 5080 looks comparatively weak. Not that this should worry Nvidia. With AMD expected to only be focusing on the mid-range GPU market when it launches its RDNA 4 architecture, Nvidia should end up having the flagship best graphics card market all to itself. Nvidia also hopefully learned a lesson with the launch of the GeForce RTX 4080 back in 2022, which is that you can't actually charge whatever you want for a graphics card if the value is terrible - people will just choose not to buy it. Nvidia later addressed this mistake with the cheaper and more powerful RTX 4080 Super earlier this year. Read the rest of the story... If you're here ready to debate my declaration of "the best-named game of all time," I'm going to suggest you've never played Satisfactory, because it embodies its name perfectly. When the developers at Coffee Stain were first working on Satisfactory, though, they weren't all in agreement that the name was destined. In fact, it was a bit of a ******...
