Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Nintendo may have just won its battle to put the most popular Nintendo Switch emulators out of business. In March, it sued Yuzu out of existence — and now it may have convinced Yuzu’s primary competitor, Ryujinx, to go away too. Ryujinx’s download page is now empty. Its GitHub is gone. And the emulator’s X social media page and official Discord now contains a possible explanation: Nintendo got to its lead developer, and convinced them to shut down the project for good. [Hidden Content] — Ryujinx (@RyujinxEmu) October 1, 2024 “Yesterday, gdkchan was contacted by Nintendo and offered an agreement to stop working on the project, remove the organization and all related assets he’s in control of,” writes developer and moderator... When videogames are described as being 'like anime,' it usually conjures up images of licensed fighting games along the lines of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, visual novels such as Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, or RPG games like Persona 3 Reload, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and Genshin Impact. There are plenty of other genres of ********* animation to draw inspiration from, though, especially film and TV shows that portray space combat between sci-fi fighter jets. It's this type of animated action that serves as inspiration for Rogue Flight, a newly announced aerial combat game in the vein of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown or Starfox. Enlarge / These copyrighted Switch games shown on Ryujinx's former GitHub page probably didn't curry any favor with Nintendo. (credit: Ryujinx / Internet Archive) [/url] Popular open source Nintendo Switch emulator Ryujinx has been removed from GitHub, and the team behind it has reportedly ceased development of the project after apparent discussions with Nintendo. Ryujinx developer riperiperi writes on the project's Discord server and social media that fellow developer gdkchan was "contacted by Nintendo and offered an agreement to stop working on the project, remove the organization and all related assets he's in control of." While the final outcome of that negotiation is not yet public, riperiperi reports that "the organization has been removed" (presumably from GitHub) and thus "I think it's safe to say what the outcome is." While the Ryujinx website is still up as of this writing, the download page and other links to GitHub-hosted information from that website no longer function. The developers behind the project have not posted a regular progress report update since January after posting similar updates almost every month throughout 2023. Before today, the Ryujinx social media account last posted an announcement in March. Read 6 remaining paragraphs | Comments View the full article
Castlevania veteran Shutaro Ida has announced that he will be stepping back from work on Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night 2 following his recent ******* diagnosis. The game developer, who worked on a long list of entries in Konami’s Castlevania series and more recently directed 2019’s Bloodstained, announced the news in a post on X/Twitter. He says he’ll be offloading some of his responsibilities with the rest of the team at developer ArtPlay now that he has begun his ******* battle. “I, SHUTARO, also known as Curry Boy and Curry Sage, have been diagnosed with ******* and have begun my battle with the ********. I have already started talking about the sequel to Bloodstained, and have ideas for the game and such. From now on, the responsibility [for game direction] will be shared. Thank you for your support," Ida wrote in a post translated by X and verified by IGN. Ida has been instrumental in the Bloodstained universe and had planned on continuing it with a sequel. Bloodstained 2 was originally announced back in 2021, though no additional details about its progress have arrived since then. At the time, publisher 505 Games touted the action RPG as a success that managed to reach “generally favorable” reviews from both critics and fans on Metacritic. これまで、DSシリーズやブラッドステインドは実質的にSHUTAROディレクターを中心に制作を行ってきました。 正に彼の作品と言えるでしょう。 そんな彼がプロジェクトから遠ざかるのは大変な痛手ですが、それに負けぬよう頑張ります。 また一緒に仕事ができるまで回復することを期待します。 [Hidden Content] — IGA (@KojiIGA) October 1, 2024 Longtime Castlevania producer and ArtPlay president Koji Igarashi re-posted Iida’s remarks. While acknowledging Iida’s contributions to the series and gaming as a whole, he assures fans that the rest of the team will push through until Ida is able to work with them again. “Up until now, the DS [Castlevania] series and Bloodstained have essentially been produced primarily by Director SHUTARO. It can truly be called his work. It is a great ***** to have him step away from the project, but we will do our best not to be defeated by it. I hope that you will recover quickly enough to work with us again.” Ida led the charge on Bloodstained and made a game that we ranked as the fourth best Metroidvania of all-time. In our 8.8/10 review, we said, “The wait was worth it. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a whole new castle to ****** full of unexpected monsters and mysteries in the vein of classic Castlevania.” Michael Cripe is a freelance contributor with IGN. You have to make multiple decisions as you play through Starfield‘s Shattered Space DLC and make your way to House Va’ruun’s homeworld. One of the main quests, Exhuming the Past, requires you to decide either to take a final interlock or leave a dam. The choice could seem minor in the moment at the end of Exhuming the Past’s quest story, but it’s critical to characters within the larger story. You’ll have a chance to grab the final piece from this location, or you can choose to leave peacefully, allowing those to remain inside the dam while also preventing any further consequences for a nearby farm. Here’s what you need to know about if you should grab the final interlock, or if you should exit the dam for Exhuming the Past in Starfield. View the full article

Destiny and Destiny 2 have always had their ups and downs. Over the decade since the first instalment of Bungie's post-Halo FPS series launched, the studio has worked hard to address player complaints through updates and expansions, some well received and some not. The throwback approach to RPG game design has been responsible for some of the best games to appear in recent years. A huge highlight in 2023 was Baldur's Gate 3, which resurrected a classic series with a fresh new entry. Before it, there was also the broader CRPG revival, with games like Pillars of Eternity, Wasteland 3, and Tyranny arriving to show the staying power of an older approach to RPG design. As of this week, another retro-style role-playing adventure called Banquet for Fools has arrived to continue this trend with striking visuals and inventive design. Read the rest of the story... These days, when I log onto Destiny 2, which for my sins I still do most nights, the conversation with my clan mates has a ******** air. The talk invariably turns to what Bungie should do to stem the player base from bleeding out in the wake of The Final Shape expansion, and the backdrop of mass layoffs at the studio. The one thing we all agree is that the brilliant Onslaught horde mode, which was introduced as part of the Into the Light update in April, needs to be a cornerstone of whatever comes next... Not having enough ammo in Destiny 2‘s raids and dungeons can be the difference between a damage phase and a wipe. The game’s next seasonal Exotic may help you avoid those scenarios by throwing ammo at you and your allies—and we mean that quite literally. Today’s Revenant devstream showed off a myriad of novel elements coming to Destiny 2‘s second episode, including a new (and seemingly riveting) grenade launcher with infinite ammo, a slew of tricks under its sleeve, and a unique aesthetic to match. Starfield's Shattered Space DLC launched in the most Bethesda way possible, with a plethora of bugs ranging from the amusing to the game-breaking. Shattered Space is Starfield's first DLC, focusing on the mysterious House Va'ruun, and set almost entirely on the lost planet of Va'ruun'kai. Players had high expectations for it, especially since it promised a handcrafted map and impactful decisions ranging beyond what the base game offers. Whether it actually delivers on those promises is up to personal preference. What is clear, though, is that Shattered Space has a whole host of technical issues. View the full article

Throne and Liberty is off to a very strong start. The new MMORPG by NCSoft and Amazon Games has already rushed to number four on Steam, behind only Dota 2, Counter-Strike 2, and that one banana game. At the time of this article, Throne and Liberty sits at around 292,116 concurrents, putting in the top half of the list of Steam's ten most popular games. Its early performance is all the more impressive in light of mixed reviews, most of which have focused on its server issues and microtransactions. Disconnected from server? byu/stefansoul inthroneandliberty .reddit-embed-wrapper iframe { margin-left: 0 !important; } Indeed, server issues seem to be the biggest problem facing Throne and Liberty, with fans complaining about spending 45 minutes creating a character only to get disconnected. What's more, it doesn't appear possible to choose a different server, leaving fans little recourse except to hope that things improve. Still, Throne and Liberty seems to be doing well, following in the footsteps of other Amazon Games releases including Lost Ark and New World. Originally billed as a Lineage sequel, Throne and Liberty is described as a free-to-play MMO with PvE and PvP set in a dynamic and seamless world. It suffered numerous delays over the course of a development cycle spanning several years. We wrote about Throne and Liberty during its beta, "Overall, I certainly enjoyed most of my time with Throne and Liberty. There are big, late-game things that I want to come back and participate in, like large-scale PVP battles between guilds and raid dungeons. The story and quests won’t upend any long-standing MMO conventions. The inner voice that usually commands me to make sure every task that can be done must be done very quietly let me skip through slow dialogue and turn a ****** eye to many menial side tasks. I never skipped an opportunity to ******, though." But while Amazon Games have a way of getting off to a fast start, they have struggled to maintain that momentum amid slow updates, balance problems, and other issues. New World launched to huge numbers, wound up getting heavily retooled, and is trying to get a fresh start on console as New World: Aerturnum. We'll see if Throne and Liberty has better luck. It didn’t take long for Onslaught to steal the hearts of Destiny 2 players when it launched in April 2024. Six months after its release, the horde mode is getting a revamp with Episode Revenant, which releases on Oct. 8. Throne and Liberty, the popular MMORPG from NCSoft and Amazon Games that just had its full release in North America, Europe, and Japan today, is suffering from significant server issues. Throne and Liberty's launch is off to a rough start, but the server issues seem to be due to an influx of people trying to play the game, which is a good sign that there is at least a great deal of interest in the title.
