  1. I’m usually a little suspicious of anything that winkingly describes itself as “very normal”. It’s got Mental Baz energy to me. You’ve met mental Baz, right? He’s mental, he is! Has half a lemonade shandy with lunch sometimes, and wears one of those t-shirts that look like a tuxedo. Absolute mentalist! Anyway, after reviewing Grunn last week it’s thankfully far more interesting and creative than poor old Baz, who’s honestly just a bit shy and actually really nice when you get past the facade. Grunn just released today, and my high level tempter is that it’s a little bit like Outer Wilds, just with all the touching wonder replaced by spooky whimsy. Here’s a trailer: Read more View the full article

  4. Ubisoft’s founding Guillemot family and shareholder Tencent are reportedly considering teaming up to take the company private following a number of high-profile video game flops and the collapse of its share price. Bloomberg reports that both parties are speaking with advisers in a bid to stabilize Ubisoft after shares in the company fell 54% this year. The publication qualifies this by saying these exploratory talks may end up going nowhere, and a buyout is not the only option being discussed. Ubisoft declined to comment. The Guillemot family, including Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot, holds just over 20% of Ubisoft’s shares, with Tencent owning just over 9%. At the time of this article’s publication, shares in Ubisoft had rebounded a whopping 26.33% on the news. Ubisoft has endured an awful year with disappointing returns from Call of Duty competitor XDefiant and, most recently, Star Wars Outlaws. It delayed *********’s Creed Shadows into 2025 following poor sales of Outlaws, and its staff have arranged a strike for later this month. In its recent note to investors, Guillemot acknowledged that the company's "second quarter fell short of expectations" and vowed to launch "a review aimed at further improving our **********." He also addressed some of the cultural conversations happening around the company lately, which have intensified around Star Wars Outlaws and the upcoming *********'s Creed Shadows. Meanwhile, Ubisoft has ditched Epic Games Store timed exclusivity for its PC games and gone back to day-one launches on Steam, a move clearly designed to boost flagging sales of its games. 6. Starfield's Shattered Space DLC has met with an unexpected outpouring of fan disappointment. Released on September 30, 2024 - just over a year after the base game's initial launch - Shattered Space was supposed to breathe new life into a stagnating Starfield. It would explore the underdeveloped House Va'ruun faction from the base game, introducing new locales, weapons, armor, and lots more in a terrifying story that had more flavor on one planet than the base game had in an entire galaxy. 9. Tencent and Ubisoft founders the Guillemot family are reportedly considering teaming up to take the company private, after it lost more than half its market value this year. According to Bloomberg sources, the ******** conglomerate – which already owns around 10% of Ubisoft – and Guillemot Brothers Ltd have been speaking with advisers to explore ways to stabilize Ubisoft. One of the possibilities discussed would involve teaming up to take Ubisoft private, it’s claimed, though talks are said to be at an early stage, and there’s no certainty they will lead to action. 10. Image: Hasbro Epic is trying to turn Fortnite into an ecosystem of games and has enticed the likes of Lego to build experiences for the platform. Now, Hasbro is jumping in as well, with plans to create Fortnite adaptations of its most popular board games. The first is called ******* Mystery: Clue, and it’s available today. It’s not exactly a board game (see the screenshot above) but, rather, a reimagining in the form of a multiplayer ******* mystery that takes place over multiple rounds, a style that has proven popular in games like Among Us. (Epic launched its own take on the genre with a limited-time Fortnite mode back in 2021.) Hasbro is also planning a version of Guess Who? for later this month and Connect Four in December. 13. Atari and WayForward recently reinvented a classic arcade title with the release of Yars Rising, a complete reimagining of the 1982 shooter Yars' Revenge. Now Atari and IDW Publishing have joined forces to release a Yars Rising prequel comic. With the preorder deadline for Yars Rising #1 happening on Monday, October 7, IGN can exclusively debut a new preview of the first issue. Check it out in the slideshow gallery below: Yars Rising #1 is a one-shot special written by WayForward's Adam Tierney and drawn by Ele Bruni, with cover art by Ashleigh Hetrick. As the preview shows, the comic retains the unusual anime-inspired aesthetic of the game. The comic is set before the events of the game, as hacker extraordinaire Emi Kimura and her friends deal with the consequences of a job gone bad. "I'm thrilled to be working with Atari and IDW on the official Yars Rising one-shot comic book prequel," Tierney tells IGN. "While developing the Yars Rising video game, I loved writing dialog for our crazy hacker crew of Emi, Mal, Anthony, and Kyan. So it was a blast to revisit these characters in comic book format, and see how they work together in an earlier (but just as dangerous) adventure that takes place right at Emi's home. I couldn't think of a better publisher for this book than IDW or a more perfect artist than the amazing Ele Bruni. I hope everyone enjoys the Yars Rising video game, out now on PC and consoles, and very soon, the official comic book prequel, too!" Yars Rising #1 is priced at $4.99 will be released on November 13, 2024. 25. Final Fantasy 7 might not be a horror game, but one breakout horror hit from 2024 takes a lot of inspiration from the classic RPG. Released in May after a clever marketing campaign that leaned on 90s-style advertisements, Crow Country takes things back to the PlayStation 1 era while carving out its own niche. As a survival horror title, it's been most heavily compared to games like the original Resident Evil and Silent Hill, a fair evaluation that nonetheless ignores the equally obvious connections to FF7 and fails to fully explain Crow Country's unique brand of charm.
