  2. After weeks of new updates to prepare players, Starfield is finally back with its first expansion, Shattered Space. Giving players new areas to explore, a story to experience, and weapons to collect, Shattered Space is a start in the right direction for Starfield, albeit a rocky one. While it hasn't quite lived up to fan expectations, receiving a dramatic range of reviews from critics and players alike, there's still enjoyment to be had in Shattered Space thanks to its newest features. 5. MicroProse has announced that it will be publishing Cleared Hot, a “notsalgic helicopter shooter” clearly based on Desert Strike. Developed by Californian studio Cfinger Games, Cleared Hot is described as a “nostalgic helicopter shooter with satisfying physics and light tactical elements”. “******, dodge, move your squad around the battlefield, and pick up almost anything with your rope and magnet,” the game’s Steam description reads. 7. Throne and Liberty, the free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by NCSoft and published by Amazon Games, has seen more than three million players in just a week. Originally billed as a Lineage sequel, Throne and Liberty is an MMO with PvE and PvP set in a dynamic and seamless world. It suffered numerous delays over the course of a development cycle spanning several years. Throne and Liberty finally launched on October 1 across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, and soon proved a hit on Steam with an impressive player concurrent peak of 336,300. That’s enough to make Throne and Liberty one of the most-played games on Valve’s platform right now. Neither Sony nor Microsoft make player numbers public. Amazon added that Throne and Liberty players had amassed 24 million hours in the game, with more than 11 million hours watched on Twitch. “Bringing Throne and Liberty to players around the world has been a huge shared undertaking by our team and our friends at NCSoft, and we’re so pleased to see the results as players join the game,” said Christoph Hartmann, VP, Amazon Games. “We’re only getting started, and we have a series of updates planned including our first castle siege coming soon.” Throne and Liberty’s early performance is all the more impressive in light of its ‘mixed’ user review rating on Steam, with most of the negative reviews about server issues and the typical monetization you get from these sorts of F2P MMOs. IGN’s impressions of Throne and Liberty during its beta said the game “is fun but doesn’t do enough to stand out.” For Amazon Games, Throne and Liberty’s success comes as it continues to support its own developed MMO, New World, and Smilegate’s action role-playing game Lost Ark, which it published in 2022. Amazon is also publishing Crystal Dynamics’ next Tomb Raider game, and has a The Lord of the Rings MMORPG in the works, among other projects. In August, Hartmann told IGN the Lord of the rings MMO was "still early," and the next Tomb Raider a "huge, huge task." Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. 8. As part of the October Prime Day *****, Amazon is offering the Anker PowerCore 737 USB Power Bank for only $89.99. This portable battery features a generous 20,000mAH capacity and a powerful 140W power output, but is still TSA-approved. It can fast charge a Steam Deck or ASUS Rog Ally from empty to full multiple times over. Anker PowerCore 737 24,000mAh Power Bank for $89.99 with 140W of USB Type-C Power Delivery The Anker PowerCore 737 can be used like any other power bank; it does a fine job of charging any of your standard mobile electronics. It has two USB Type-C ports and one USB Type-A port. One of the USB Type-C ports is ***-directional, meaning it can be used to charge devices AND it can also be used to charge the power bank itself. The massive 24,000mAh is just under the TSA's 27,000mAh limit. I recently brought this power bank to a trip to Japan. At the security checkpoint it was removed and the wattage fully tested. It passed with flying colors and I was able to get through security with my power bank in tow. Because of the larger capacity, it weighs in at a heftier 1.4 pounds. The Anker 737 is our pick for best Steam Deck / ASUS ROG Ally charger We picked the Anker 737 as one of our favorite portable chargers for the Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally portable gaming handhelds. This is an outstanding charger for handheld gaming consoles like the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Switch. Both the ROG Ally and Steam Deck suffer from a short battery life when gaming on the go. During our Steam Deck review, we found games like **** of War or Spider-Man would tap out in under 2 hours. At the end of the day, you'll never get the full potential out of your Steam Deck or ROG Ally if you're not equipped with a decent portable charger. The Steam Deck accepts up to 38W of USB Power Delivery, ASUS ROG Ally accepts up to 65W, and the Nintendo Switch up to 18W. The Anker 737 could theoretically charge a Steam Deck, ROG Ally, and Switch at their maximum charging rate all at the same time, but we wouldn't recommend that because the thermal protection would kick in and throttle the output. The Anker 737 power bank is TSA-approved TSA requires that power banks be in carry-on bags only (they are not allowed in check-in luggage). Power banks must also be under 27,000mAh or 100Whr in capacity. The Anker power bank's 24,000mAh capacity is =under TSA's 27,000mAh 100Whr limit so it can be brought onto airplanes without worry. If a TSA official actually does take the initiative to test the wattage on your power bank, you're well in the clear. This is easily one of the best Steam Deck deals and Nintendo Switch deals available for October Prime Day, and absolutely worth considering if you find yourself short on power all too often. 9. When we reviewed Diablo IV, the latest installment in the long-running action roleplaying game series last year, we said it was off to a ***** of a good start. But ARPGs live and **** by their endgame loops, and it was far too early at the time to accurately assess the game’s true staying power. Sadly, after that confident first step, like so many loot-hunting games before it, Diablo IV fell flat on its face. I’ve seen plenty of boneheaded updates to live-service games, but Diablo IV’s first major patch, released a couple of months after the game’s release, was still pretty shocking. By that point, a consensus had emerged that the endgame was a bit barren, and getting to the game’s level cap of 100 was a tedious slog. But that’s the great thing about live-service games, right? Tweak some numbers, throw in a couple of fun high-level activities, and, baby, you’ve got a stew going. Sadly, the game’s developers at Blizzard had other plans. The patch notes for that first update read like someone had systematically gone through the game and removed anything that could be considered fun. Almost every character build had been mercilessly nerfed, and worst of all, the game became even slower. Fans were incensed, and Diablo IV floundered like this for its first three seasons. I mostly lost interest. Read full article Comments View the full article
  10. Traveller's Hymn is a top-down, grid-based, open-world adventure game (and breathe), set in a dark fantasy land. The tileset is lovely, as are the little dialogue boxes and menus and the gentle bob of your backpack-ridden character as they walk. Basically, it looks like it's worth everyone's time, particularly because there's one big twist here - it's entirely free. 11. PlayStation users have plenty to look forward to this Halloween. A handful of remakes and remasters are on the horizon that will breathe new life into timeless classics, as well as a few recent releases that are still trending as must-haves for any proud PS5 owner. Any video game would thrive on the PS5’s fast processing times, cutting-edge graphics, advanced haptics, and immersive 3D audio, but these enhancements take horror games in particular to the absolute max, making them more cinematic and, therefore, more impactful. Here are a few recommendations for horror games that would be especially rewarding to play on the PS5 during October in the lead-up to All Hallow’s Eve. View the full article

  16. A former lead artist at Bethesda says he quit during the development of Starfield because he felt the team had grown too large. Nate Purkeypile worked at Bethesda for 14 years, during which time he was lead artist on Fallout 76 and worked on other titles including Fallout 3, Fallout 4 and Skyrim. Before that, he worked at Retro Studios where he was a world artist on Metroid Prime 3. However, Purkeypile left Bethesda in 2021 to form his own solo studio called Just Purkey Games, and has now shared a trailer from his latest game on Reddit, along with comments on why he left Bethesda in the first place (as spotted by PC Gamer). 18. Tiny deck builder Combo Critters exhibits the winning combination common to both small games and ******** breakfast cereals - it’s very crunchy, but also bright, sugary and moreish. If Thaddius Cornflakes had recommended struggling families play Combo Critters instead of eating Cookie Crisp for dinner, I imagine the backlash would have been far more reserved. 21. No game protagonist is more willing to stick his hand down a ******* than James Sunderland. Why is he doing this? You would have to ask him or the psychiatrist he badly requires. And it's unlikely he'd explain himself. This isn't the type of story in which the protagonist has difficulty accepting the existence of horrors, nor struggles with the surreality of what he needs to do to get through a locked door. In the opening minutes, James finds a well with a glowing red square floating inside, stares into it (it saves your game), then makes a calm remark about the odd sensation he feels, and moves on. The human corpses that pepper the town of Silent Hill are noticeably that of James himself, his head bludgeoned and bloodied beyond recognition but his jacket and boots unmistakable. He makes no remark on this. It's probably nothing. Read more View the full article

  23. Detroit: Become Human has sold over 10 million copies, developer Quantic Dream has announced. That’s 10 million paid units across PlayStation and PC, Quantic Dream qualified. Given Detroit: Become Human is on-and-off a part of various subscription services such as PS Plus, its total number of players will be much higher. "We are extremely grateful to each and everyone out there who played the game," Quantic Dream CEO Guillaume de Fondaumière tweeted. "You mean the world to us and we couldn't have achieved this incredible milestone without every single one of you!" Detroit: Become Human is a sci-fi thriller that first launched on PlayStation 4 in May 2018, before launching on PC in December 2019, and followed Quantic Dream’s other PlayStation interactive thrillers Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. IGN’s Detroit: Become Human review returned an 8/10. We said: “Detroit: Become Human is a wonderfully silly interactive drama that meaningfully bends to your will.” Since going on *****, Detroit: Become Human was turned into a manga, but there’s been no mention of a sequel, a remaster, a full-blown remake, or even a native PS5 version. On the PS5, Detroit: Become Human runs via backwards compatibility using the PS4 Pro version of the game. As for Quantic Dream, it’s still working on Star Wars Eclipse, a new action adventure game set in the High Republic era of Star Wars, although we haven’t heard a peep out of the game in years. Last year, the studio told IGN that Star Wars Eclipse development was “simmering.” Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. 25. ***** has confirmed that Sonic Rumble won’t have any gacha or play-to-win mechanics when it’s released this winter, because they’re not popular in the west. In an interview with Automaton, the game’s director Makoto Tase and Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka stated that the game won’t feature gacha mechanics, where players pay money to obtain randomly selected items (similar to a capsule machine). According to Iizuka, this decision was made purely to appease western audiences, because ********* players would have had no issue with gacha mechanics. Read More... View the full article
