Asian markets are mixed after Wall Street edges back from its record
BANGKOK (AP) — Shares were mixed in thin Asian trading on Monday after U.S. stocks edged back from their all-time high.
Oil prices fell and U.S. futures sank, while ******** shares shed some of their early gains after a survey of manufacturers showed export orders dropping to a five-month low.
The official manufacturing purchasing managers index fell to 49.1 in January from 50.1 in December, slipping into contractionary territory on a scale where 50 and above indicates expansion.
Zichun Huang of Capital Economics said the slowdown might be temporary given increased government spending.
“But the disappointing PMI data underscores the difficulty policymakers face in achieving a sustained recovery in growth,” Huang wrote in a commentary.
The Hang Seng in Hong Kong was up 0.9% at 20,249.64, while the Shanghai Composite index was up 0.1%, at 3,256.91.
Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 gave up 0.6% to 39,699.76, extending losses after the Bank of Japan raised its benchmark interest rate to 0.25%, its highest level since 2008.
The U.S. dollar was steady against the Japanese yen, at 155.73 yen, up from 155.72. The euro slipped to $1.0471 from $1.0483.
In Bangkok, the SET fell 0.2%.
Markets were closed in many other Asian markets due to lunar new year holidays.
On Friday, U.S. stocks pulled back from their all-time high to close out a second straight winning week.
The S&P 500 slipped 0.3% a day after setting a record, closing at 6,101.24. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 0.3% to 44,424.25, and the Nasdaq composite sank 0.5% to 19,954.30.
Trading was quiet, aided by relative steadiness in the bond market, which has been driving much of the action on Wall Street lately. When worries about inflation and the U.S. government’s swelling debt have been on the rise, Treasury yields have climbed and helped knock down stock prices. When concerns ebb, such as after last week’s encouraging update on inflation, yields have eased and helped stocks rise.
A mostly encouraging start to the earnings reporting season for big U.S. companies has also helped prop up the stock market. Even if higher Treasury yields are pushing downward on their stock prices, companies can make up for it by delivering ******* profits.
Texas Instruments fell 7.5% despite reporting profit for the latest quarter that topped analysts’ expectations.
In a sign of how much pressure is on companies to keep growing, analysts focused on discouraging signals of how much profit the company is likely to make from each $1 of revenue during the first three months of 2025. That helped drag down stocks across the semiconductor industry.
Story Continues
CSX sank 2.9% even though the railroad delivered a profit for the latest quarter that matched analysts’ expectations. Its revenue for the last three months of 2024 just missed analysts’ forecasts as it dealt with the effects of hurricanes.
On the winning side of Wall Street were Novo Nordisk’s U.S.-listed shares, which jumped 8.5%. The Danish company reported results from a clinical trial of a treatment for people who are overweight or obese, which could mean ******* profits in the future.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury eased to 4.61% from 4.65% late Thursday. Other yields also pulled lower following a couple reports on the U.S. economy that came in worse than expected.
One said U.S. consumer sentiment is weaker than economists had forecast and fell in January for the first time in six months. A separate preliminary report suggested U.S. business activity is also weaker than expected. A third, potentially more encouraging report said sales of previously occupied homes were slightly stronger last month than expected, following the weakest year for such sales since 1995.
Traders don’t expect the weak data to push the Federal Reserve to cut its main interest rate at its meeting next week. They’re virtually certain the central bank will hold steady, according to data from CME Group.
In other dealings early Monday, U.S. benchmark crude oil shed 47 cents to $74.13 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, lost 47 cents to $77.08.

Japan chip stocks fall as DeepSeek’s challenge to U.S. AI dominance raises worries for Asian tech firms

Japan’s chip-related stocks fell Monday as ******** AI startup DeepSeek raises concerns about a potential challenge to America’s global leadership in artificial intelligence that threatens Asian tech companies part of the U.S.-dependent AI value chain.
Shares of semiconductor testing equipment supplier Advantest, which counts Nvidia among its clients, fell 7.99%. Tokyo Electron dropped 3.94%, while Renesas Electronics fell 0.4%.
Softbank Group, which owns chip designer Arm, slid 5.4% after trading higher last week on CEO Masayoshi Son’s plans to invest $100 billion in the U.S.
“Japan’s chip stocks are selling off sharply on the DeepSeek concerns and we are seeing a rotation out of growth names into value,” Andrew Jackson, head of equity strategy at ORTUS Advisors told CNBC via email.
Data center-related shares that were boosted by higher technology infrastructure spending will also be hit, he added.
Shares of wire and cable firms Furukawa and Fujikura also fell 9.8% and 8.16%, respectively.
DeepSeek launched a free, open-source large-language model in late December, claiming it was developed in just two months at a cost of under $6 million. Last week, the lab launched r1, a reasoning model that surpassed OpenAI’s newest o1 in several third-party tests.
The fresh developments triggered concerns about the large amounts of money big tech companies have been investing in AI models and data centers. DeepSeek also had to contend with the tough semiconductor restrictions the U.S. government placed on China, limiting access to advanced chips.
“While it remains to be seen if DeepSeek will prove to be a viable, cheaper alternative in the long term, initial worries are centered on whether U.S. tech giants’ pricing power are being threatened and if their massive AI spending need re-evaluation,” IG’s market strategist Junrong Yeap said in a note.
DeepSeek has become the most downloaded free app on Apple’s iPhone.
The fall in Japanese chip shares comes as Nasdaq futures dropped 1.62% during Asia trading hours.
“Judging from the move in Nasdaq futures we may be in for a rough ride tonight in the U.S. also,” Jackson added.
“With a model this cheap, many new products and experiences can now emerge trying to win the hearts and minds of the global populace,” said Chamath Palihapitiya, *********-American venture capitalist and CEO of Social Capital said on social media platform X, who sees volatility in the stock market as capital markets will seek to re-price the values of the “Magnificent 7” companies.
“Nvidia is the most at risk for obvious reasons,” he said.

US suspends tariffs after Colombia agrees to deportation flights
US suspends tariffs after Colombia agrees to deportation flights
The US will not go ahead with tariffs on Colombia, after the country agreed to accept – without restrictions – deported migrants, the White House says.
Donald Trump had ordered 25% tariffs on all Colombian goods after its president barred two US military deportation flights from landing in the country on Sunday.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro had initially responded by saying his country would accept deportees on “civilian planes, without treating them like criminals”.
A White House statement says Columbia has now agreed to accept migrants arriving on US military aircraft “without limitation or delay”. Colombia says Washington has agreed to treat repatriated citizens with dignity.
On Sunday, Petro had denied entry to US military deportation flights, saying that migrants should be returned “with dignity and respect”.
In response, Trump announced “urgent and decisive retaliatory measures” in a post on his social media site Truth Social, including tariffs and visa sanctions.
Petro responded on X in a post announcing his own tariffs and celebrating Colombia’s heritage and resilience.
“Your blockade does not scare me, because Colombia, besides being the country of beauty, is the heart of the world,” he said.
Within hours, the two sides appeared to have resolved the row. The White House said Columbia had agreed to “all of President Trump’s demands”.
Trump’s proposed tariffs had been “fully drafted” and would still be implemented if Colombia does not honour this agreement, according to the White House.
Trump had also announced visa sanctions and enhanced inspections on Colombians at the border. These will remain in place “until the first planeload of Columbian deportees is successfully returned”, the White House said.

My husband is a cross-dresser: This is what it was actually like to be married
My husband is a cross-dresser: This is what it was actually like to be married
The house was quiet when I let myself in after an evening out with friends. I walked into the living room, expecting to find my husband, Anthony, on the sofa watching TV. Instead, there was a strange woman standing there, waiting for me.
She was tall and slim, with blonde bobbed hair. It took my brain a second to register that this was not a woman, but a man. And then, with shock, that this was no stranger. It was my husband, in full drag.
He was wearing a fitted dress filled out with a padded bra, ****** tights and heels, and a wig. His face was covered in full make-up, with thick foundation, mascara, eyeliner, and bright red lipstick, and his nails were painted in matching red nail polish.
The transformation made him look much older, somehow. In fact, he now looked rather like his mother, my mother-in-law. Shocked, I reached for the sofa as I felt my legs buckle beneath me.
That was how I discovered that my now ex-husband, who worked as a lawyer, was a cross-dresser. It was the moment when his lifelong secret also became my secret, and our marriage changed for ever.
We were both in our early 40s and had not long been married – although we had been living together for over a year – and until then, I’d had absolutely no idea about his predilection.
It’s important here to stop and define exactly what I mean. Cross-dressing, once known as transvestism, is not the same as identifying as the opposite sex.
A biological male who cross-dresses is not a trans woman. He is not innately uncomfortable with living as a man. Most are straight men, often married or with long-term partners and, in daily life, they wear male attire.
A few decades ago, transvestism was widely viewed as a form of fetishism, with female clothing as the fetish. And for men like my ex- husband, that’s what it was: a way of achieving ******* arousal and gratification.
Nobody is sure exactly how many men cross-dress for ******* reasons, but it’s estimated that it could be between 5 to 10 per cent of all men, making it far from uncommon.
Despite this, I have only ever met one woman who confessed to me that her husband did it. It’s one of the last taboos, something that people rarely, if ever, discuss openly.
Men who cross-dress are worried they’ll be mocked or shunned and women, like me, are worried we’ll be judged as bigoted for not endorsing a partner’s need to do it.
That evening, in our living room, my ex-husband chose to reveal his secret to me because he felt secure enough to do so. He wanted my approval, my blessing, to do what he must have been doing covertly for three years, the entirety of our relationship at that point – and in his previous relationships.
I tried not to display my shock because I didn’t want to hurt him. The anxious, pleading look he gave me made it clear he needed me to say how gorgeous he appeared. And while I could concede that his lack of hips and his height gave him a model-like figure – so that the dress looked far better on him than it would have on me – I couldn’t force myself to say he looked good.
The truth was, I was repulsed.
I think I said something like, “Wow!”, which could be construed as either a positive or a negative. He seemed relieved and said, “Thank you,” and hugged me tightly, and then he admitted to me that he’d been doing it since he was a teenager.
He couldn’t explain why he’d started – he didn’t remember the trigger – but he said it comforted him and made him feel like himself.
He assured me that he wasn’t gay and that he didn’t identify as a woman. In fact, his revelation made certain aspects of his personality make more sense. He had always cared greatly about his appearance and his clothes, and he even enjoyed going clothes shopping with me.
Unlike past boyfriends, who would stand tutting and looking at their watches while I tried things on, he was happy to peruse the rails and help me pick out dresses and tops. And he would always notice if I had a new item, and compliment me on it.
Believe me, I did try to accept Anthony’s need to cross-dress. I really tried. I loved him and I wanted him to be happy, to be able to express himself fully.
I knew it was something he couldn’t help and I was sad for him that he’d felt he had to hide it away for years – even from me. And, perhaps, if his cross-dressing had merely been a quirk, a kink he’d been happy to indulge occasionally at home with clothes and make-up, I could have coped with it.
But within a few weeks, I realised he wanted more than my understanding and acceptance; he wanted my active participation.
What he really wanted was to dress up while we had sex. The first time he climbed into bed with me, clad in a silky ****** negligee, his face made up, I’ll admit I felt physically sick. I found it creepy.
Until then, our sex life had been normal. He was a sensitive man – kind, generous and a good listener, which were things I valued. This had translated to the bedroom, where he was – unusually – focused on “making love” rather than instant satisfaction. I thought I was lucky.
The only hint of his particular ******* interest was the fact he liked to touch my body through satin lingerie. Of course, it was only after he revealed his enjoyment of cross-dressing that I acknowledged it was likely the clothing, more than my flesh, that ******** him. That stung.
Empathy and ******* attraction are two very different things. I have never had any ******* interest in women – least of all in my ex-mother-in-law – and climbing into bed with a feminised version of my ex-husband was a huge turn-off.
Maybe there are some women who really don’t mind. Maybe there are some who even find seeing their partner in what we think of as women’s clothing ********* arousing. However, I have always liked men who look like men: stubble, muscles, square jaws, big shoulders, hairy chests and all. It’s not a prejudice, it’s just my ******* taste.
That night, I shut my eyes and tried to make myself go along with it, to please him, but in the end, I simply could not consent to sex. I made my excuses, said I was sorry for “not being in the mood”, and we rolled over and went to sleep.
After that, over many months, he tried several times more, until one night, I had to be honest and tell him the truth – a truth he already knew unconsciously. That I couldn’t have sex with him while he cross-dressed because I didn’t find him attractive like that.
In retrospect, it was the beginning of the end of our marriage.
For him, cross-dressing was so bound up with his sexuality that he received my refusal to take part as a huge rejection. We went back to conventional sex, but it would never be good again. I knew he wasn’t fulfilled, and my attraction to him had diminished.
Eventually, we stopped having sex altogether. We made a half-hearted attempt at resolving our problem with marriage counselling, but even in this supposedly safe space, the subject of Anthony’s cross-dressing felt so taboo that neither he nor I dared bring it up with the sex therapist. It was the proverbial elephant in the room.
Camera IconWe couldn’t even bring cross-dressing up with out therapist. Credit: courtneyk/Getty Images
Even if we had been able to discuss it, I’m not sure there’s anything the therapist could have done. Cross-dressing is not a mental illness, and it doesn’t have a cure. It’s viewed by medical professionals simply as a “deviation from the norm”.
What I didn’t realise then was that my rejection of his fetish almost certainly made Anthony need to do it more.
According to the medical textbook published by Merck, The MSD Manuals, “When a partner is not cooperative, cross-dressers may feel anxious, depressed, guilty, and ashamed about their desire to cross-dress.”
“In response to these feelings, these men often purge their wardrobe of female clothing.
“This purging may be followed by additional cycles of accumulating female clothes, wigs, and make-up, with more feelings of guilt and shame, followed by more purges.” In this situation, it becomes known as a ‘transvestic disorder’.
I am truly sorry, and sad, if I made my ex-husband feel this way. There’s a long tradition of men dressing as women, from Shakespeare through to pantomime dames and drag queens.
When I was growing up, I remember comedy characters like Hinge and Bracket or the Pythons using drag for comedic effect. Brendan O’Carroll does it today, of course, as Mrs Brown in the popular BBC sitcom.
For some it’s not an “act”, but very much a part of their day-to-day identity.
The artist Grayson Perry, aka “Claire”, once called himself “Britain’s pre-eminent *************” and collected his CBE in a blue silk dress with a matching jacket and an ostrich feather hat. Grayson’s wife Philippa seems perfectly happy with his cross-dressing.
Then there are the others – the men who cross-dress in private for very personal reasons, and the women, like me, who aren’t happy about it.
The fact is, as the wife of a cross-dresser, it is very hard to say you don’t like it, much less that it repulses you. Today such an admission is quite likely to lead to accusations of transphobia, even though your partner isn’t trans.
It worries me that there may be women out there who feel obliged to sleep with their cross-dressing husbands because they believe they’re prejudiced, or in the wrong, for finding it a turn-off.
The very last time I saw Anthony cross-dress was when we were invited to a fancy dress party together, with a “cops and robbers” theme. He suggested that we go as Cagney and Lacey, and – naturally – he chose to be Cagney.
I’m not sure why I agreed. For him, it was a big deal: the chance to indulge his fetish in public, although of course, nobody else knew that, for him, this wasn’t just an amusing costume. He was very nervous before we went, but at the party, everyone said how amazing he looked, with his fake breasts, lipstick and blonde wig, and the compliments – the approval – gave him a surge of confidence. He was in his element.
As for me, I spent the evening feeling uncomfortable and **********, and unable to say why. Anthony continued to cross-dress at home, but he stopped doing it in my presence. Instead, he would wait until I went away, or out alone for a whole evening, and then dress up privately.
I’d come home to the incontrovertible evidence: the remnants of eyeliner around his eyes and the lingering smell of nail polish remover in the bathroom. I wouldn’t mention it, but he knew that I knew.
Sometimes, I felt angry that he’d hidden such a huge part of his identity from me until after we were married. I asked myself whether I would have fallen in love with him had I known before, and if I would still have married him. I couldn’t answer that, and still can’t.
I think it took me a long time to understand how integral his cross-dressing was to his sexuality. In the end, it drove a gulf between us. It wasn’t the only cause of our divorce, after eight years of marriage, but it was a major one. And yet, because of the taboo, I didn’t even mention it in the grounds section of the divorce petition, when listing his ‘unreasonable behaviour’ (it was before no-fault divorces became legal).
After Anthony moved out, and I had to clear our house for *****, I made a shocking discovery. At the back of the wardrobe in the spare room, I found a large bag that he must have forgotten about and left behind. Inside was a collection of my old clothes, which I’d once asked him to drop at the charity shop.
He’d kept them to wear himself. There was also a selection of tights, bras, knickers, dresses and shoes, none of which I had seen before, which he had clearly bought to dress up in. It made me feel that I had been living with a stranger.

The appeal of quality dividend stocks is rising because they provide stability and reliable income when times are tough and broader markets are wavering. Data shows that over a 10-year ******* through 2019, stocks with reinvested dividends performed better in both down and up markets.
Over a year ago, someone asked income investors on r/Dividends – a Reddit community with more than 650,000 members – living off dividend income about any risks or downsides young investors should be aware of when depending entirely on dividends. The question received 150 comments, with many experienced investors sharing their personal stories and advice. A particular comment got attention.
Don’t Miss:
An investor, 72, said he was making over $160,000 in dividends and advised investors to always diversify their portfolio for downside protection.
“I can tell you the #1 rule is to stay diversified. #2 is to live within your means, no matter what your income level. I’ve survived dividend cuts … but that barely made a dent in our income thanks to Rule #1,” he said.
The investor at the time said his portfolio was down about 10% from its peak in 2020, but his dividend income saw an increase because he lived below his means and reinvested in dividends. He also made an additional $15,000 to $25,000 from selling call options on stocks and reinvested that income, too.
“I’ve had portfolio drops or gains (usually drops) of >$50k daily, sometimes several days in a row. I ask my wife, ‘Has anything changed in your life?’ The answer is no. We are frugal but buy whatever we want or need. Just bought a new car for cash. After putting three kids through college with no loans, we now contribute to grandkids’ 529 plans. It would take a nuclear war or a complete economic collapse to degrade our lifestyle,” he added.

Realty Income
Realty Income (O) was the biggest holding of the investor, who collected over $160,000 in annual dividend income. Realty Income has raised its dividends for 30 consecutive years. The stock has been under pressure amid tariff concerns and the possibility of a higher-for-longer interest rate. Investors will be closely watching its latest quarterly results, scheduled for late February.

Procter & Gamble was another dividend stock in the portfolio with a stellar growth history. The company has raised its payouts for 68 consecutive years. PG shares gained recently after the company beat fiscal second-quarter estimates. Organic sales rose 3% in the quarter, above the 2.4% growth expected by Wall Street.

Eli Lilly
Eli Lilly (LLY) was a low-yield dividend stock in the portfolio. The investor said in a separate post that he recently took “substantial” profits in LLY and planned to sell another stock with a low dividend yield.
Eli Lilly yields less than 1%. Earlier this month, the company said it expects fourth-quarter revenue to come in at around $13.5 billion, below the consensus of $13.95 billion. The company’s CEO said the previous guidance had expected “faster acceleration” of growth.

*** sailor missing after yacht found ‘eviscerated’
A British sailor is lost at sea after his yacht was found “eviscerated” off the south-western French coast in stormy weather, maritime officials have said.
The 73-year-old set off his distress beacon on Saturday after getting into difficulty approximately 80km (50 miles) west of Lacanau, the Préfecture maritime de l’Atlantique said in a statement.
A French air force helicopter was dispatched to find the man, but found his 12-metre yacht, the Tiger PA, “eviscerated” in the Bay of Biscay.
Two divers were then winched down to the wreckage, where they discovered an empty raft, officials added.
A Portuguese cargo ship and a Spanish hospital vessel were both diverted to the area and to help with the search, alongside the French navy.
After several hours of searching, it was called off in the early hours of Sunday morning “due to a lack of information”.
In the statement the the Préfecture maritime de l’Atlantique reminded people to be careful in the waters during the stormy weather.
It comes after Storm Herminia, named by the Spanish weather service Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet) on Friday, brought heavy rains and wind battered the north of Spain and western France.
Gusts of wind exceeded 62mph and floodwaters caused by the storm also left cars and buildings submerged in western France.

Greta Otteson and Arno Els: Tainted limoncello poisoned couple in Vietnam tragedy
Greta Otteson and Arno Els: Tainted limoncello poisoned couple in Vietnam tragedy
A British woman and her fiance died from “methanol poisoning” after drinking contaminated limoncello in Vietnam, police have confirmed.
Greta Otteson, 33, and her partner Arno Els, 36, were discovered dead on Boxing Day at the hotel they had been running for 10 months.
The pair are thought to have bought two bottles of “homemade” limoncello on Christmas Eve from a nearby restaurant.
On Christmas Day they had what Ms Otteson described to her mother on WhatsApp as “the worst hangover ever”.
A friend came over and advised they go to hospital but they decided to try to sleep it off.
The next morning staff at the Hoi An Silverbell Villa found both Ms Otteson and South African Mr Els dead.
Detectives confirmed over the weekend that the couple died from methanol poisoning.

Methanol, which is impossible to taste, can be found in illicit or homemade alcoholic drinks.
It takes only a small amount for there to be deadly consequences, because when it is consumed the body converts it into a highly destructive acid that causes organ failure.
The restaurant the couple ordered the bottles from offers a shot of the yellow, sweet and citrus-flavoured liqueur for $5.50.
Ms Otteson’s parents are in talks with the Vietnamese police and the British Foreign Office about bringing the restaurant to justice.
The deaths came just five weeks after British lawyer Simone White, 28, died in neighbouring Laos from methanol poisoning after drinking contaminated vodka shots.

In a statement, Ms Otteson’s parents Susan and Paul told the Sunday Times: “Both Greta and Arno were experienced worldwide travellers. They found their perfect home and were incredibly happy with their life in Vietnam, planning for the future.”
They added: “The Vietnamese police have now confirmed that the cause of death was methanol poisoning, as verified by the autopsy results.”

King to visit Auschwitz concentration camp

King Charles will travel to Poland as he continues his ******* treatment
King Charles will become the first British head of state to visit Auschwitz when he tours the former Nazi concentration camp to mark the 80th anniversary of its liberation.
The King will travel to Poland to join survivors and other dignitaries at a service at the site of the former concentration camp, at the end of which he will lay a light of remembrance o honour those who lost their lives.
Sources close to the King say this is a profound visit for him with one aide describing it as a “deeply personal pilgrimage.”
Back in the *** Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has renewed his commitment to ensure all schools teach pupils about the Holocaust, warning that society must “make ‘never again’ finally mean what it says”.
He will join the Prince of Wales at the official commemorations in London to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
Holocaust Memorial Day, which takes place on 27 January each year, remembers the six million Jews murdered during World War II.
It also commemorates the millions of people outside of the Jewish faith who were murdered through Nazi persecution and those targeted in more recent genocides.
Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest Nazi concentration camp and was at the centre of the Nazi campaign to eradicate Europe’s Jewish population.
The King has long wanted to be present at Auschwitz for the liberation ceremony not just because of the significance of the anniversary but also to bear witness to the testimony of survivors in the location where so much suffering happened.
A palace source told the BBC: “There is no substitute for paying tribute at the very scene where the horrors took place.”
In 1943, the King’s grandmother, Princess Alice of Greece, saved a Jewish family by taking them into her home and hiding them in Nazi-occupied Athens – something the King has said brought him and the Royal Family an immense sense of pride.
During his brief visit to Poland the King will also meet President Andrzej Duda.

The prime minister visited Auschwitz earlier this month, where he vowed to fight the “poison of antisemitism”
Speaking ahead of the anniversary Sir Keir said while we remember the six million Jewish victims “we must also act”, adding he wanted to make teaching young people about the genocide a “national endeavour”.
He said: “It happened, it can happen again: that is the warning of the Holocaust to us all.
“The Holocaust was a collective endeavour by thousands of ordinary people utterly consumed by the hatred of difference.
“That is the hatred we stand against today and it is a collective endeavour for all of us to defeat it.”
On Wednesday, Sir Keir welcomed a group of survivors and their families to Downing Street, describing the meeting as “an incredible privilege” and praised their “sheer and remarkable courage”.
Tory leader Kemi Badenoch spoke of the importance of confronting “the resurgence of antisemitism today” while reflecting on the Holocaust as a “unique evil in human history”, in a statement to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
While Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey urged vigilance in defending “peace, human rights and compassion” and guarding against “antisemitism, hatred, discrimination and oppression”.

Taylor Swift, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce headed to NFL Super Bowl in bid for three-peat
Taylor Swift, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce headed to NFL Super Bowl in bid for three-peat
Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs are going for a three-peat in a Super Bowl rematch.
This time, Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles have Saquon Barkley.
The Eagles and Chiefs will face off for the Lombardi Trophy for the second time in three years on February 9 (February 10 AEDT) in New Orleans.
And while for diehard NFL fans the focus will be on the 2022 rematch most fair weather Super Bowl fans will be more interested in Taylor Swift.
She and Kelce shared a passionate embrace after Kansas City’s 25-22 overtime win over the 49ers at last year’s Super Bowl in an image that went viral.
The pop megastar braved near freezing temperatures in Missouri to watch her beau Kelce’s Chiefs edge out the Buffalo Bills 32-29 earlier today.
Kansas City will be aiming to become the first team to win three Super Bowls in a row.
“Each one of these is special,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said after being handed the Lamar Hunt Trophy, which is named after his father.
“Now, we get to do something that’s never been done before. Chiefs kingdom, we’re heading to New Orleans to make history.”
Mahomes rallied the Chiefs to a 38-35 victory over the Eagles two years ago in Arizona and a 25-22 overtime win over San Francisco in Las Vegas last season.
The two-time Super Bowl and NFL MVP led Kansas City to the heart-stopping win over Josh Allen and the Bills in the AFC championship game on Sunday (Monday AEDT), eliminating Buffalo for the fourth time in five years.
Mahomes threw for 245 yards and a touchdown, and ran through the Buffalo defence for two more scores.
“It’s not about one guy, it’s not about a couple guys, it’s about the whole team,” Mahomes said.
With girlfriend Swift watching on the field, smiling and nodding in approval, Kelce shouted: “Never satisfied, baby!” and then sang a line from “Get Down Tonight” by KC and The Sunshine Band.
Earlier, the Eagles ran past the Washington Commanders 55-23 in the NFC title game behind seven rushing touchdowns, including three apiece from Barkley and Hurts.
There was also star power at that game with avid Eagles supporter and Hollywood hunk Bradley Cooper watching on.

It will be the 10th Super Bowl rematch and fifth within a five-year span.
The winners of the four rematches within five years were the teams that won the first meeting, including the Chiefs over the 49ers last season.
Barkley had another 60-yard touchdown run plus two other rushing scores, finishing with 118 yards. His third TD from 60 yards or more in two weeks came on Philadelphia’s first play from scrimmage. No other player has three TDs of at least 60 yards in a play-off career.
Playing with an injured knee, Hurts threw for 246 yards and one touchdown to go with his three rushing scores.
The 55 points Philadelphia scored are the most by any team in a conference championship game since the 1970 merger.
The Eagles (17-3) are aiming for their second Super Bowl title in five tries. Back-up quarterback Nick Foles led them to a 41-33 victory over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots seven years ago.
The Chiefs (17-2) are 4-2 in the Super Bowl and making their fourth appearance in five years.

Haitian leader says the Trump administration’s plans will be ‘catastrophic’ for his country
Haitian leader says the Trump administration’s plans will be ‘catastrophic’ for his country
ROME (AP) — The president of Haiti’s transitional presidential council said the Trump administration’s decisions to freeze aid programs, deport migrants and block refugees will be “catastrophic” for Haiti.
Leslie Voltaire made the comment in an interview with The Associated Press in Rome on Saturday following a meeting with Pope Francis at the ********. He visited the pope to ask for help for Haiti.
“I’m knocking on the doors of people who love Haiti. The pope loves Haiti, and he is eager to help,” Haiti’s interim president said.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
The pontiff and Voltaire discussed the dire situation in Haiti where gangs have killed civilians and operate across the Caribbean nation with impunity. Half of Haiti’s 11.4 million people are already hungry, according to Voltaire, and losing humanitarian assistance will make the situation dramatically worse.
“Trump said that Haiti is a ‘shithole,’ so I don’t think he will care about Haiti,” Voltaire said, noting that thousands of people are already being repatriated from the Dominican Republic every week and gangs are terrorizing the populace. With the new U.S. policies, “the situation will be catastrophic.”
During his first administration, President Donald Trump used bluntly vulgar language to question why the U.S. would accept immigrants from Haiti and “shithole countries” in Africa. At the time, the White House did not deny his remark but issued a statement saying Trump supports immigration policies that welcome “those who can contribute to our society.”
Voltaire said there are roughly 1.5 million Haitians in the United States and roughly 150,000 who were accepted under a program called the “Temporary Protection System.”
“Trump says that he will expel all of them,” Voltaire said, adding that Haiti, which is already struggling with hunger and internally displaced people, cannot handle the influx.
In a report released this month, the U.N. migration agency said internal displacement within Haiti has tripled over the last year and n ow surpasses 1 million people. The situation has been largely caused by gang violence in the Caribbean country. The new figure provided by the International Organization for Migration represents a record for Haiti.
IOM said that “relentless gang violence” in Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince has fueled a near-doubling of displacement in the city and a collapse of health care and other services and worsening food insecurity. About 200,000 people have been forcibly returned to Haiti over the last year mostly from Dominican Republic.
Voltaire and his transitional government have been tasked with leading the country to general elections, an elusive goal but he is convinced they can make it happen by next November despite powerful gangs that rule 85% of the capital and are gaining ground in surrounding areas.
Nevertheless, Voltaire is positive that if Haiti’s multinational police force is boosted with several thousand additional officers they can go ahead with elections this year.
Kenya is leading the multinational police force with a total deployment of more than 600, below the 1,000 officers the country’s president pledged. An additional 150 Guatemalans and an advance team of eight Salvadorean troops have also arrived, but the force remains far below its anticipated strength of 2,500 officers. Voltaire said Benin has pledged an additional 2,000 soldiers.
“We have to do a referendum on a new constitution and also the election at the end of November. I say that we can do the elections because we have like eight departments, like 80% of the country. We can do the election.”
The power of gangs in Haiti has grown since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Some gangs have even indicated they want to be part of the political process. Voltaire excluded that possibility, “I don’t think they should be around the table. I think they are criminals.”
More than 5,600 people were reported killed across Haiti last year, according to the United Nations. The number of killings increased by more than 20% compared with all of 2023, according to the U.N. Human Rights Office.
Last week U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned that gangs could soon could overrun the capital, Port-au-Prince, leading to a complete breakdown of government authority without additional international support for the beleaguered national police.
Voltaire said he asked the pontiff to organize an international conference of solidarity for Haiti. The Pope wrote “international conference” on a sheet of paper, Voltaire said, and later the ******** Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, told him the ******** would try to convince Mexico and Canada to participate in funding a conference on Haiti.

Pharmacy leaders warn over online sales of weight-loss jabs
Pharmacy leaders warn over online sales of weight-loss jabs

The National Pharmacy Association said it was aware of people, whose body weight is already low, being wrongly prescribed drugs
Pharmacy leaders have issued a fresh warning over the online ***** of weight-loss jabs insisting there is still a risk to patient safety.
The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) has called for tougher rules in a letter to regulators, adding it was aware of people who previously had eating disorders or whose body weight was already low, being wrongly prescribed the drugs.
They argue a two-way consultation with the patient lasting at least 20 minutes is needed rather than relying on online questionnaires to access drugs such as Wegovy or Mounjaro.
“It is also important to ensure that clinical decisions regarding weight loss injections are not influenced by financial targets or incentives,” NPA chairman Nick Kaye said.
The NPA has written to the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) saying current rules leave the door open for medicines to be supplied without appropriate checks “and the risk to patient safety remains”.
The call comes amid warnings of a ***** in demand for weight-loss jabs this year as ministers look to expand the rollout of the medication on the NHS.
Mr Kaye told the PA news agency: “Obesity is one of the biggest challenges facing our country and pharmacies want to play their part in helping patients lose and maintain a healthy weight.
“Weight-loss injections can play an important role in efforts to tackle obesity when prescribed as part of a carefully managed treatment programme for patients who are most in need of support.
“However, we are concerned that the current regulations allow some patients to inappropriately access weight-loss injections without proper consultation or examination of historical medical records.”
Hundreds of thousands of people are estimated to get their prescriptions privately through online pharmacies.
Weight-loss jabs, known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, work by reducing food cravings.
The NPA has previously urged patients to avoid buying weight loss injections from unregulated online sellers, who may be selling fake drugs.
A person’s medical history should also be examined before sellers decide whether or not to dispense a weight-loss injection, and regular reviews must take place, it added.
A spokesperson from the GPhC said it requires all pharmacies, including those online, to ensure the way services are delivered safeguards the health, safety and wellbeing of patients and the public.
They added: “We have published guidance specifically for the safe and effective provision of pharmacy services at a distance which we expect online pharmacies in Great Britain to follow.
“We will be issuing an updated version shortly, which will set out additional safeguards around high-risk medicines, including medicines used for weight management.”

Freeway cash splash as poll pitch enters the fast lane
Freeway cash splash as poll pitch enters the fast lane
Anthony Albanese is back in Western Australia for the second time in weeks, wooing voters with big-spending election pledges as the major parties hone in on the key battleground state.
The prime minister announced $350 million to widen the Kwinana Freeway if elected in a bid to ease congestion for commuters, with state Labor promising to match the funding for a total of $700 million.
Opposition leader Peter Dutton later said the coalition would match the pledge if it wins government.
Mr Albanese visited WA on Monday, returning to the state after he embarked on a whirlwind blitz earlier in January.
A federal election must be held by May 17 and a new poll shows the prime minister’s approval ratings continue to slide.
The latest Newspoll revealed 53 per cent of voters thought the opposition would win at the election, in its own right or as a *********, compared to 47 per cent for Labor.
The coalition has increased its lead on the government on a two-party preferred basis to 51-49 per cent, a rise of one percentage point compared to the previous poll.
The prime minister said his government was governing in the interests of all Australians and was building the nation’s future.
“There’ll be polls and the commentators will commentate on them, and certainly, what I understand is I don’t take election wins for granted,” he told reporters.
“We are working hard and fighting hard every day, not because it matters who drives the car with the flag on it, because what matters is what governments do for people and what they do for our country’s future.”
Labor will be eyeing off Moore, which is WA’s most hotly contested seat and held by the Liberal Party on a 0.9 per cent margin.
Moore MP Ian Goodenough lost a preselection contest for his federal seat and will run as an independent.
Mr Albanese pointed to the state as a future economic powerhouse.
“Western Australia will continue to be such a key role in driving national economic growth as one of the engine rooms of our national economy,” he said.
Mr Dutton is also in Western Australia as the coalition seeks to hang onto its seats, while trying win back the electorate of Curtin from independent MP Kate Chaney.

Richmond get claws out as Tigers’ tempers flare in training scuffle
A hot-headed off-season has continued with Richmond teammates not holding back in their match simulation on Monday morning.
As the new-look Tigers look to lift themselves off the bottom after claiming the wooden spoon last season they are showing they will have plenty of early fight in them.
Forward Rhyan Mansell was the chief instigator, pinning and wrestling teammates with midfielder Sam Banks desperately trying to intervene but struggling to impose himself against the 24-year-old.

Fellow midfielder Jack Ross said there was plenty of energy around the group having welcomed a host of new faces in during the AFL Draft.
“We’re a really young side with a lot of energy and the boys turned up today,” he said.
“It was nice and competitive it’s always high energy this time of year and we’re training really hard.
“We want to bring a really exciting fun brand of footy.”
In good news for Tigers fans, Tom ****** was back to full training after he struggled to get back on the park last year with a host of injuries.
“It is nice to have him back out there, he’s been unreal and to see him out there at full tilt is really exciting,” he said.
It comes just days after Sydney brothers Chad and Corey Warner had to be separated by coach Dean Cox after the pair became involved in a scuffle after a heavy tackle.
With the Tigers getting physical with their own teammates there could be plenty of feeling when they meet their old ones when Liam Baker and Jack Graham line up against them in West Coast colours in their pre-season clash on May 11.

In policy reversal, Trump eliminates help for ****** and Latino communities hit harder by pollution
In policy reversal, Trump eliminates help for ****** and Latino communities hit harder by pollution
For four years, the Environmental Protection Agency made environmental justice one of its biggest priorities, working to improve health conditions in heavily-polluted communities often made up largely of ******, Latino and low-income Americans. Now that short-lived era is over.
President Donald Trump in his first week eliminated a team of White House advisors whose job it was to ensure the entire federal government helped communities located near heavy industry, ports and roadways. Trump eliminated the “Justice40” initiative the Biden administraton had created. It required 40% of the benefits from certain environmental programs go to hard-hit communities.
When the government reviews new facilities now, experts say officials are likely to ignore how any pollution they create may exacerbate what communities already experience. Trump’s actions will likely halt funds from Biden administration’s signature climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act, for climate programs and environmental justice.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
In making the decision this week, Trump eliminated federal policy dating back to the Clinton-era, which had established a government priority of addressing environmental health problems for low-income and ********* groups. He also withdrew the nation from the Paris Agreement aimed at combatting climate change.
The new administration’s moves combine two goals: clawing back what Trump officials say are onerous environmental policies that constrain development and fighting diversity, equity and inclusion, according to Joe Luppino-Esposito, federal policy chief with the free-market law firm Pacific Legal Foundation.
“We’ve had this discussion at the Supreme Court and otherwise for many years, past discrimination is not an excuse for future discrimination,” he said, adding that Trump’s executive orders allow the law to be enforced “without a specific racial tinge to it.”
Many experts say Biden accomplished more than any previous administration in this area.
An EPA-funded study found, for example, that ****** people at all income levels are more likely to breathe pollution that causes heart and lung problems. Under Biden, regulators wrote public health rules, tighter air pollution standards and proposed mandates for harmful lead pipes. The EPA issued the largest-ever fine under the federal Clean Air Act and said it slashed more than 225 million pounds of pollution in overburdened communities. Federal grants went to communities to clean up Superfund sites or buy low-emissions school buses. The EPA set up an office to facilitate its substantial environmental justice work.
“What I’m grappling right now with is both the grief of these losses, and the fact that we were on an upward swing, if you will, just weeks ago,” said ***** Begay, an Indigenous rights and climate organizer in New Mexico.
For years, government support for grassroots environmental justice efforts rose and fell depending who occupied the White House. Scrappy, local groups found ways, sometimes with help from foundations, to get their work done regardless. The Biden administration spent time, attention and resources on the issue, making it higher profile — and a ******* target, according to Christophe Courchesne, a law professor and interim director of the Environmental Law Center at the Vermont Law and Graduate School.
Environmental justice got swept up into “this pitched battle over diversity, equity and inclusion,” Courchesne said. “This developed over time into a target of conservative activism.”
Daniel Gall, an EPA spokesman, said the agency under Trump will work for clean air, land and water.
“EPA is working to diligently implement President Trump’s executive orders,” he said.
The policy changes diverge from the last time Trump was president. Scott Pruitt, who headed the EPA for part of Trump’s first term, once called environmental justice conversations “critical to improving environmental and public health outcomes.” Trump’s new orders are more sweeping; moves that Rena Payan, chief program officer at the Oakland, California nonprofit Justice Outside, called “rolling back decades of progress in addressing environmental discrimination.”
The Trump administration is not only ditching long-standing policies, it is directing agencies to eliminate jobs dedicated to environmental justice and diversity, equity and inclusion issues, according to a recent memo.
They are not limited to the public sphere. The new administration is also looking to remove diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in the private sector — a step that goes further than some anticipated, according to Julius Redd, an environmental attorney at Beveridge & Diamond P.C.
Anne Rolfes, director of the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, which helps communities in the heart of the petrochemical industry, echoed other advocates and said the Biden administration did some great things, but didn’t do nearly enough to enforce the law, allowing polluters too much free reign in heavily industrialized Louisiana.
Now it’ll get worse and an already industry-friendly state is likely to let polluters build even more quickly. “We just have to buckle up and get ready,” she said.
That change feels disheartening to Ash LaMont, national campaigns director for Honor The Earth, a non-profit focused on raising awareness and support for environmental issues in Native American communities.
“We’ve been spending a lot of time really figuring out what is our next step, what are the things that we can do that will last, despite the administration, and what are the very apparent needs of our community members,” she said.
Trump’s decision to cut off support will hurt, but many of these local organizations will return to operating without federal support, said Peggy Shepard, co-founder and executive director of WE ACT for Environmental Justice in New York.
Advocacy will shift to the state and local level. That might work in some places, but it’ll be an uphill battle in Republican-controlled states like Louisiana and Texas where there’s little receptivity to that advocacy, she said.
“They were finally beginning to get support at the EPA and at the White House,” she said, “and this is a big step back for the communities who are front line to some of these issues.”

Is it ******** to warm your car up unattended in WA? Here’s what you need to know
The Brief
Leaving your car to warm up is technically ******** in the state of Washington.
State law cites risks of injury to nearby people, or damage to nearby property as primary reasons for this deterrence measure.
Local law enforcement officials also warn of increasing car thefts from doing so.
SEATTLE – With unseasonably cold temperatures across the region, many people may want to run out to turn their car on before heading back inside to finish getting ready. This is technically ********.
Washington law prohibits leaving your car running while unattended.
According to RCW 46.61.600, “No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit it to stand unattended without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the key and effectively setting the brake thereon.”
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department has issued warnings previously about the risks associated with leaving your car running.
What they’re saying
“When the weather is cold, we all want to warm up our vehicles before we have to drive in to work, but please do not leave your vehicle unattended. We’ve seen too many cars stolen this way,” said Lt. Darren Moss.
Dig deeper
Aside from the dangers of increasing the prevalence of car thefts, another reason for this law is the risks to those in the immediate area.
The law states that “the most recent driver of a motor vehicle which the driver has left standing unattended, who learns that the vehicle has become set in motion and has struck another vehicle or property, or has caused injury to any person,” must comply with accompanying requirements and liabilities laid out by RCW 46.52.010 and RCW 46.52.020.
