1 Unstoppable ETF That Could Turn $350 per Month Into $1 Million 1 Unstoppable ETF That Could Turn $350 per Month Into $1 Million Investing in the stock market today can be a bit concerning, given the S&P 500’s elevated levels and many stocks trading at high valuations. The broad index is coming off a second straight year of gains in excess of 20%, leading some analysts to believe that a slowdown may be overdue for the market. One way to reduce your risk is to periodically invest in stocks. Putting money every month into a diverse exchange-traded fund (ETF) can be an excellent way to ensure you aren’t worried about timing the market while also putting yourself in a great position to grow your portfolio’s balance over the long term. A top ETF you can invest in that has the potential to turn a $350 per month investment into $1 million over the long term is the iShares Russell 1000 Growth ETF (NYSEMKT: IWF). Here’s a closer look at the fund and why it may be a no-brainer option for long-term investors. What’s attractive about the iShares Russell 1000 Growth ETF is that it focuses on large and mid-cap stocks, which are likely to grow at faster rates than the market. It gives investors exposure to many of the best growth stocks available. Historically, this has been a solid, market-beating investment to hang on to. IWF Total Return Level data by YCharts While the tech sector is the largest sector in the fund’s portfolio, accounting for just under 48% of the ETF’s holdings, consumer discretionary stocks also make up 16%, followed by communication stocks at 14%, and both financials and healthcare stocks each account for around 7%. There are other, smaller sectors as well, which is why the fund can make for a good and diverse investment to hang on to. Its largest holding, Apple, represents 11% of the total portfolio. In total, there are around 400 stocks in the ETF. Another feature of the ETF that makes it suitable for the long haul is that it charges an expense ratio of just 0.19%. That’s a modest rate, which will ensure a big chunk of the gains you accumulate won’t go to cover fees. If you’re investing $350 each month into this ETF, it can potentially turn into at least $1 million over the very long haul. Assuming you invest this amount regularly, here’s how the value of your holdings may look over the long haul, assuming a 9% annual growth rate. Portfolio balance assuming a $350/month investment and a 9% annual return Year Investment Value 20 $233,760 25 $392,393 30 $640,760 35 $1,029,625 Chart by author. You can see the significant effect compounding can have on your portfolio’s balance, particularly as it becomes larger. While it may take 20 years for your holdings to reach a value of more than $233,000, between the years of 25 and 35, your investment value could grow by over $637,000. Story Continues By making investing part of your regular monthly routine, you can simplify the process, which can increase the likelihood that you stick to it. Without having to analyze stocks each month and just putting money into the Russell 1000 Growth ETF, you can ensure you’re getting exposure to top growth stocks and investing your money in a way that gives you plenty of diversification and keeps your risk low over the long term. While it can take a long time for a $350/month investment to grow to $1 million, achieving higher annual returns or investing more (perhaps a lump sum) can lead to larger returns. But by investing as much as you can, you’ll be putting yourself on a path to creating a much brighter financial future. Ivanka Trump’s Trainer Reveals How To Build Ultimate Home Gym Ivanka Trump’s Trainer Reveals How To Build Ultimate Home Gym Ivanka Trump‘s “luxury personal trainer” has revealed how you can get your dream body from the comfort of your home—and the items you need to build the ultimate workout center on your property. Sandy Brockman is an Austin, TX-based fitness expert who has made a name for herself in the workout world for whipping some of the biggest A-listers into shape. Along with the First Daughter, the 52-year-old is credited with helping a number of other marquee names gain taut waistlines and rock-hard abs. Now, Brockman has exclusively told Realtor.com® how you can achieve the body of your celebrity idol right from your bedroom. The strength training expert explained how working up a sweat at home can be more effective than “killing yourself” at the gym—and the household items you can use in place of dumbbells if you are on a tight budget. (SandyBrockman/Instagram) Sandy Brockman has exclusively told Realtor.com® how you can achieve the body of your celebrity idol right from your bedroom. (SandyBrockman/Instagram) Brockman opened up about the advantages of training at home and which workouts will get you the body of your favorite Hollywood heavyweights. She revealed that the things you need to build your ultimate home gym are “dumbbells, a yoga mat, and bands,” adding that advanced fitness enthusiasts can purchase a rowing machine or a treadmill for cardio. Speaking about one of the biggest perks of a home workout routine, she told Realtor.com®: “I think the benefit is consistency—you’ll actually do it. That’s the No. 1: You don’t have to get in your car and drive to the gym. It’s just right there, so there are no excuses.” Brockman noted that sweating in the comfort of your home can also help you get more in tune with your body and get rid of any “gymtimidation.” She added that training in one of your rooms can help you establish a “baseline” of what to do when you do step into a gym. “Definitely get at least a minimum of a 20-minute routine at home that you can take into a gym so that you always have that sort of baseline. “If you have gym intimidation, it’s like, ‘Okay, I do this at home. I know what I’m doing. Here are the dumbbells. They look like my dumbbells at home.’ That’s a great way to start getting confident to go to the gym,” she said. The strength-training expert explained how working up a sweat at home can be more effective than “killing yourself” at the gymâand the household items you can use in place of dumbbells if you are on a tight budget. (ivankatrump/instagram) She revealed that the things you need to build your ultimate home gym are “dumbbells, a yoga mat, and bands.” She adds that advanced fitness enthusiasts can purchase a rowing machine or a treadmill for cardio. (Sandybrockman/instagram) And while exercising at home can have its perks, Brockman warned beginners to avoid getting too comfortable and falling into a non-motivational pattern. She explained that getting yourself in the mindset is the “hardest” part, suggesting that workout devotees use a training video online or download a “minute on the minute” app to help them stay on track. “I think motivation is key in your house. You either need to blast music, have a timer keeping you on time and on task, or a video,” Brockman revealed. The fitness pro revealed that if you commit to it, working out at home can be more beneficial than exercising at the gym. She explained: “A 40-minute workout is great at home but a 20-minute workout at home five times a week is just as good as an hour workout at the gym four days a week.” When it comes to what workouts you should do at home, she recommended “squats, push-ups, dumbbell bent over rows, kettlebell swings, and lunges.” She called these “the basics,” adding that “you can riff off of these if you are advanced.” Brockman has previously revealed that she has helped Trump achieve her dream body by urging her to do the same workouts with heavier weights. When it comes to what workouts you should do at home, she recommended “squats, push-ups, dumbbell bent over rows, kettlebell swings, and lunges.” (SandyBrockman/Instagram) And for those on a tight budget, Brockman lifted the lid on household items that can be used in place of workout equipment. (SandyBrockman/Instagram) Brockman recommended “three different sets of light, medium, and heavy dumbbells.” And for those on a tight budget, Brockman lifted the lid on household items that can be used in place of workout equipment. She admitted that many of her A-lister clients use “broomsticks” to stretch with when in a pinch, before revealing that you can use “water bottles,” “soup cans,” or anything with a “round shape” instead of dumbbells. Brockman urged homeowners to consider their fitness goals when buying or renovating their homes. “Put building a home gym into your plans because you will use it,” she advised. “Don’t make it an afterthought. It will change your life to have a room aside for fitness.” Related Articles Source link #Ivanka #Trumps #Trainer #Reveals #Build #Ultimate #Home #Gym Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Anthony Albanese confident Labor ‘can form Government’ at next election despite dismal polling Anthony Albanese confident Labor ‘can form Government’ at next election despite dismal polling Anthony Albanese is confident Labor can form Government at the next election after a disastrous poll showed a majority of Australians believe the Coalition will win. The latest Newspoll, conducted for the ***********, found the Coalition lead Labor on a two-party preferred basis 51-49, while the Prime Minister’s approval ratings had slid to this lowest since taking office with net minus 20. The “better PM” gap between Mr Albanese and his opponent Peter Dutton had also narrowed to just three points, while Labor dropped two percentage points on primary support to 31 per cent to the Coalition’s consistent 39 per cent. An increased number of Australians now believe the next election will result in a Coalition ********* Government, with less than a third of voters expecting a Labor ********* Government. The PM said he wasn’t paying attention to the polls, but that he doesn’t “take election wins for granted”. “Labor can form government after the next election,” Mr Albanese told reporters in Perth. “We are the only political party that is even trying to form government in our own right. You have in the Liberals and the Nationals a formal coalition. We never know what the basis of that agreement is, and quite often them combining with the Greens to form the no-alition in the Senate to block our agenda. “We also have a range of independents occupying seats that historically have been held by the Coalition.” He said Labor holds 78 seats and “we will be campaigning to form a majority Labor Government”. “And we, I believe, that we will be in a position to do so,” he said. The poor polling came despite an early cross-country charm offensive laden with billions of dollars worth of infrastructure announcements designed to pitch a second-term Labor Government to voters. World’s first scalable, networked photonic quantum computer prototype unveiled World’s first scalable, networked photonic quantum computer prototype unveiled Traditional computers rely on electrons to perform computational tasks, but electrons can never match the speed and processing power offered by photons, tiny packets of light that travel at an astonishing 300,000 km/s. Unfortunately, we cannot make classical computers run on photons because they need electric charges to process and store information. On the other hand, photons are chargeless and do not interact easily with electronic components like transistors in classical circuits. This is why scientists have been trying to develop photonic quantum computers, an advanced computing concept that uses mirrors, beam splitters, and optical fibers to manipulate photons. However, the word “concept” in the above paragraph seems to be no longer required as a Canada-based quantum computing company named Xanadu has created the world’s first scalable and networked photonic quantum computer prototype. “It is the very first time we—or anyone, for that matter—have combined all the subsystems necessary to implement universal and fault-tolerant quantum computation in a photonic architecture.” the Xanadu team said. A practical photonic quantum system Xanadu calls their photonic quantum computer Aurora. It is a 12-qubit system developed using four independent modular server racks, which in total comprise 35 photonic chips and 13-km (8-mile) long fiber optics. The best part is that this entire system operates in room-temperature conditions. Aurora’s makers claim that it is highly scalable and equipped with everything needed to perform fault-tolerant quantum computing operations. It currently works like a baby data center but, in principle, it could “be scaled up to thousands of server racks and millions of qubits today, realizing the ultimate goal of a big quantum data center,” the Xanadu team notes. The study authors also tested their four-server computer to create a special type of entangled state with billions of modes. This result was collected over 2 hours and represents the creation and measurement of a large entangled state, made up of 86.4 billion modes, or about 7.2 billion temporal modes. “We use this machine, which we name Aurora, to synthesize a cluster state entangled across separate chips with 86.4 billion modes, and demonstrate its capability of implementing the foliated distance-2 repetition code with real-time decoding,” authors of a peer-reviewed study on Aurora said. In quantum computing, a repetition code is a straightforward approach to dealing with errors. It works by encoding a single logical qubit across several physical qubits, creating redundancy for easy detection and correction of errors. The test successfully proved Aurora’s potential for performing complex and large computations in a fault-tolerant manner. Aurora isn’t yet perfect There’s no doubt that Aurora is a highly scalable and modular photonic computer, but its design still has some challenges to overcome. For instance, when it is scaled to the size of a large data center, it is likely to encounter high signal loss rates and need a large number of more complex hi-tech components to function smoothly. “Loss rates will still have to come down by orders of magnitude as the resulting system will need to be the size of a conventional data center to operate,” Christoph Simon, a quantum computing expert at the University of Calgary, told The Globe and Mail. Simon wasn’t a part of the Xanadu team. It will still take some years before all the challenges with Aurora are met, but the good news is photonic quantum computing is off to a solid start. In the coming months, we could see the development of more advanced systems with a larger number of servers. A study on Aurora is published in the journal Nature. Jaguar Land Rover bets $80m on bespoke paint services Jaguar Land Rover bets $80m on bespoke paint services The ***’s largest luxury car maker, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), says it will invest £65m ($81m) in a plan to expand its bespoke paint services in response to growing demand from wealthy customers. The plan includes opening new paint facilities in Castle Bromwich, *** and Nitra, Slovakia. The firm, which is owned by India’s ***** Group, says it expects to more than double its bespoke paint operation, including helping clients match the colour of their exclusive Range Rover SV models to their private jets or yachts. It follows a similar move by Rolls-Royce, which announced earlier this month that it was investing £300m to build more highly-customised versions of its cars for super-rich customers. “Range Rover clients are increasingly choosing to tailor their vehicles with more exclusive bespoke and elevated palette paints,” said Jamal Hameedi, director of special vehicle operations at JLR. “By increasing our capacity we can satisfy the demand growth from our Range Rover clients and… clients of our other brands.” The company says the plan will also help it cut energy and water use as well as reduce paint waste. Earlier this month, Rolls-Royce said it was expanding its Goodwood factory and global headquarters to meet growing demand for bespoke models. Rolls-Royce said the plan would “also ready the manufacturing facility for the marque’s transition to an all-battery electric vehicle future”. Last month, Jaguar unveiled a controversial new electric concept car. Some on social media said the new Type 00 car was “exciting” and “absolutely stunning”, while others called it “rubbish” and told Jaguar’s designers to “go back to the drawing board”. However, the carmaker suggested the reaction was exactly what it wanted as it was trying to reset the brand and revive sluggish sales. Sinead O’Connor leaves children $3.3m – and tells them to ‘milk’ her records Sinead O’Connor leaves children $3.3m – and tells them to ‘milk’ her records Sinead O’Connor left her children £1.7million in her will – and urged them to “milk” her albums for all their worth. The singer died of natural causes aged 56 last July, just months after her son, Shane Lunny, 17, took his own life. Ms O’Connor, known for her 1990 hit Nothing Compares 2 U, left her music to her surviving children – Jake Reynolds, 36, Roisin Waters, 27, and 16-year-old Yeshua Bonadio. According to her will, she said: “After my death, and at the discretion of any of my children who are then over 18, my albums are to be released so as to ‘milk it for what it’s worth’”. She added: “My children can dispense my ashes as they see fit.” The legal papers, obtained by The Sun, also said that at her ******** she wanted to be dressed in priestly robes and have a Hebrew ****** and her album Theology in her coffin. Her youngest child, Yeshua, is due to inherit her guitars. Her music-producing former husband John Reynolds, father of Jake, is the executor of the will. The couple were married in 1987 and despite separating in 1991, continued to work together. Ms O’Connor, who was born in Dublin, went on to marry three more times. In 1999 she became a Latin Tridentine priest after she was ordained by Bishop Michael Cox, in a move which shocked many in Ireland. Ms O’Connor died from “the exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma”, at her flat in south London. When O’Connor’s family announced her death they said they were “devastated” and asked for “privacy at this very difficult time”. The music star, who changed her name to Shuhada’ Sadaqat in 2018, after she converted to Islam, referred to the death of her son in her last post on X: “Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. “We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. “I am lost in the bardo without him.” Source link #Sinead #OConnor #leaves #children #3.3m #tells #milk #records Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Walmart is selling an ‘excellent’ budget dash cam with full HD front and rear cameras for just $35 Walmart is selling an ‘excellent’ budget dash cam with full HD front and rear cameras for just $35 Autoblog aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission. They say the best defense is a good offense. With a dash cam, you can apply the same sports logic to combatting insurance fraud. In the event your vehicle is impacted in a collision and the person at fault denies liability, a dash cam provides counterevidence in the form of unmistakable footage. Now on ***** for $35, the Nexpow dual dash cam system employs a pair of HD cameras in tandem for 320-degree coverage around your car, truck, or SUV. Nexpow DC02 Dual Dash Cam $35 (was $120) at Walmart Get it! Along with a full HD 1080p front camera, the Nexpow DC02 comes with a secondary 720p dash cam that captures rear-view video. Both are high quality enough to clearly read license plates and road signs, which is all you really need for emergency purposes. A built-in G-sensor detects when you’re in an accident and immediately starts recording upon impact. That footage is then saved and locked to prevent it from being overwritten. Otherwise, the Nexpow DC02 dash cam system is always recording when the engine is on, automatically replacing the oldest files with new, real-time footage as soon as it runs out of space. Nexpow claims that its F1.5 aperture, six-glass optical lens is capable of capturing clear footage in low-light conditions at a high quality using WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) tech. While it might sound complicated with all of the moving parts, installing the Nexpow DC02 dash cam system is actually pretty straightforward. First, center the front camera in a position on the windshield that won’t obstruct your view, then mount it with the included 3M adhesive pad. Repeat the same process for the back camera on your rear windshield. After that, connect the front camera to the rear using the proprietary routing cable included in the box. Plug the front camera into the 12V (********** lighter) outlet, insert a microSD card, and you’re set to record. You should probably figure out a cable management solution, but that’s a later problem. Story continues In the reviews, one shopper called the Nexpow DC02 an “excellent budget dashcam system,” going on to say it’s “easy to install, and easy to operate… and good resolution when I play back the footage on my desktop computer via a USB cable.” That said, the system does lack integrated storage, nor does it come with a microSD card. Memory hardware has gotten absurdly cheap though. This 128GB card, for instance, is only $15 at Walmart. If you doubt you’ll need that much space and want to save a few bucks, you can grab a 32GB card for $7. Even without the expandable storage bundled in, the Nexpow DC02 dual dash cam system is a steal at $35. Onn. 128GB MicroSDXC Memory Card $15 at Walmart Get it! Pepsi Just Made a $1.2 Billion Acquisition of Something That Has Nothing to Do With Carbonated Beverages Pepsi Just Made a $1.2 Billion Acquisition of Something That Has Nothing to Do With Carbonated Beverages After 10 years in business, the Garza family sold their company Siete Foods to PepsiCo (NASDAQ: PEP) for a cool $1.2 billion. The deal for Siete was announced back in October but closed this January. Pepsi is an enormous business, and for it $1.2 billion is relatively small. But any purchase over $1 billion is still noteworthy. The surprising thing for some investors may be that Siete Foods doesn’t have a single beverage in its product portfolio, let alone any carbonated beverages. Rather, the company makes food products that cater toward people looking for grain-free and dairy-free options in ********-American food. The acquisition of Siete Foods dovetails nicely with Pepsi’s November acquisitions of Sabra and Obela. Pepsi had already owned half of both joint ventures but moved to acquire the rest, bringing more food products into Pepsi’s portfolio. If it’s surprising to you that Pepsi is acquiring food companies, then it’s likely that you don’t understand Pepsi’s business. In fact, food products are one of the best reasons to invest in the company today. Over the last 12 months, Pepsi has generated revenue of over $90 billion. But a relatively small percentage of this is attributable to beverage sales in North America. In the company’s fiscal third quarter of 2024 (which ended in early September), the North American beverage division only accounted for 31% of the business. Nearly as big as beverages, 28% of Pepsi’s Q3 revenue came from snacks and food in North American markets. The company generates the remainder of its sales from food and beverages in international markets. However, snacks and food in North America are the more important parts of Pepsi’s business, because they’re more profitable by a mile. The company’s North American Frito-Lay division alone accounted for 39% of its total Q3 operating profit; in comparison, just 24% of operating profit came from the North American beverage unit. To drill down further, Pepsi’s Quaker Foods division in North America is small at just 3% of the company’s overall revenue in Q3. But again, it commands better profits. Quaker Foods in North America had a Q3 operating margin of 15%, compared with just an 8% margin for beverages in North America. Given the size of Pepsi’s non-beverage portfolio and looking at the margins, it’s not surprising that the company is doubling down with acquisitions such as Sabra and Siete Foods. It’s good business. When it comes to investing in Pepsi stock, it’s important to have realistic expectations. Over the last 10 years, Pepsi has averaged only a 7% annual gain, according to Macrotrends. Returns were positive, which counts for something — but they weren’t anything to write home about. Story Continues These pedestrian returns for Pepsi stock were due to its similarly pedestrian rate of revenue growth. Being one of the biggest businesses in the world already, and in a low-growth industry, means that it’s hard to grow fast. And growth is important for stock returns. That said, PepsiCo stock isn’t without its merits. For starters, the company’s diverse and beloved product portfolio makes it one of the safest businesses in the world, so investors can reasonably expect stable profits. And because its stock price went down in 2023 and 2024, it’s now cheaper than usual. Pepsi’s price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 22 is below its 10-year average P/E valuation of 26. And with a dividend yield of over 3.5%, the income potential has never been higher; that’s significant because Pepsi is an ultrareliable Dividend King. PEP PE Ratio data by YCharts. Finally, Pepsi has generated 39% of its revenue from international markets through the first three quarters of 2024. As a whole, revenue in international markets is growing while it’s declining in North America. Moreover, profits are improving in international markets with scale. Based on these trends, it’s possible that profit growth outpaces revenue growth for Pepsi in the coming years, which would provide the stock with an added boost. Pepsi is acquiring food companies because food is a big part of the business, and provides better-margin revenue than carbonated beverages. The company may not post impressive growth numbers due to its size. But management is focusing on its better opportunities, the stock is cheap, and international growth could provide a boost as profitability improves. All that said, PepsiCo shares aren’t my best pick for outperforming the S&P 500 over the next three to five years. But investors could do a lot worse than Pepsi. And the stock does have merit from the perspectives of both safety and dividends, which could be important in making a decision. Open boss to consider Saturday start to ‘Happy Slam’ Open boss to consider Saturday start to ‘Happy Slam’ *********** Open boss Craig Tiley isn’t ruling out an unprecedented Saturday start to the Melbourne Park major after fans flocked to the season-opening grand slam in record numbers. More than 1.1 million spectators attended the 2025 Open, smashing the crowd record and generating huge money for Tennis Australia and the Victorian government. Despite boorish crowd behaviour tarnishing the tournament’s reputation somewhat, Tiley has revealed organisers will consider extending the event to 16 days in future. The Open moved to a Sunday start in 2024, and beginning on a Saturday would give the billion-dollar extravaganza three full weekends of main-draw action, further feeding the cash cow that is the biggest show on the annual *********** sporting calendar. “We wouldn’t do anything without thinking carefully about what impact it has on the players and the fans, but there’s just an insatiable desire in Australia for more people to watch tennis,” Tiley told AAP at Melbourne Park. “I mean, we’re having growth. We’re having more kids play the game, more people join clubs, more adults play the game. “More racquets and ****** have been sold than ever before. “So we’re going through a bit of a ***** in the sport and more people are paying to get a ticket to come through the gate. “So we are doing that.” With 11am starts and early-morning finishes, the *********** Open is fast following the US Open in New York as the grand slam that never sleeps. Now, with the Open qualifying tournament and exhibition matches being staged a week before, it seems the AO may become the grand slam that never stops. “We’re going after a fan experience and we want to give our fans more,” Tiley said after dismissing concerns about some fans spoiling the tournament’s reputation as the “Happy Slam”. The booing of Novak Djokovic after the 10-time champion’s injury-enforced withdrawal from his semi-final against Alexander Zverev, and foul-mouthed taunts towards Danielle Collins during the former women’s finalist’s second-round win over *********** Destanee Aiava were among the regrettable episodes. “There’s always going to be one or two people that make it unpleasant for others. That’s human behaviour,” Tiley said. “I’m not worried about the crowd behaviour. We’ve had record numbers coming through the gate. “The majority – 99.9 per cent of fans – have been well behaved. “I want to look more at the number of fans who come through the gate and the energy and the enjoyment that they’re having is at an all-time high. “So we’re not going to design an event where we’re going to keep people silent, because then the next question is going to be, ‘Why aren’t people enjoying it?'” Source link #Open #boss #Saturday #start #Happy #Slam Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

New revelations in Idaho student murders case as defense grills lead detective in court New revelations in Idaho student murders case as defense grills lead detective in court Two days of hearings on defense motions in the quadruple ******* case against University of Idaho student stabbings suspect Bryan Kohberger ended without any official decisions but revealed new details ahead of his highly anticipated trial later this year. The defense appeared to confirm early reports that Kohberger was spotted wearing rubber gloves in his parents’ kitchen when tactical officers burst in to arrest him. A key eyewitness was accused of having memory problems, drinking and telling a conflicting story. The defense confirmed that Kohberger arrived at school in Pullman, Washington, in June 2022. And the judge issued a stern warning to both sides about what he expects out of their expert disclosures moving forward. Judge Steven Hippler said he would take the arguments under advisement and issue his decisions later. Here are some key developments from the two-day hearing. Bryan Kohberger Looks To Dodge Death Penalty With Page From ‘Cult Mom’ Lori Vallow’s Playbook Bryan Kohberger arrives at the Monroe County Courthouse in Pennsylvania in advance of an extradition hearing. Is there an expectation of privacy regarding DNA left at a crime scene? Read On The Fox News App Kohberger’s defense wants investigative genetic genealogy evidence suppressed. Their arguments, however, did not appear to move the judge. “I struggle with the idea that DNA left at a crime scene, that there’s any expectation of privacy,” Judge Steven Hippler told Kohberger’s lead defense attorney, Anne Taylor. Later, as she tried to attack other elements of a probable cause affidavit, he returned to DNA as the apparent deciding factor. Hippler asked if DNA itself found on a knife sheath under a victim’s body isn’t enough to support probable cause on its own. Idaho Murders: Bryan Kohberger Defense Slams Credibility Of Eyewitness, Memory Issues “Isn’t that probable cause every day and twice on Sunday?” he asked. She said not in this case, but experts say the DNA evidence is likely Kohberger’s greatest threat. “The cellphone records certainly make him look bad, although the fact that the phone was turned off at the time of the murders helps him,” said Andrew Stoltmann, a Chicago attorney who has been following the case. “But I think the DNA sinks his Bismarck.” Trouble with the eyewitness? Taylor called into question the credibility of an eyewitness, a surviving housemate who police said saw a masked man leaving after overhearing sounds of a struggle. Bryan Kohberger Defense Wants Prosecution Punished Over Delays Attorney Anne Taylor, center, visits the location of the crimes on King Road with defense investigators Jan. 3, 2023. Despite the massacre, she went to bed. Police weren’t contacted until hours later, when a friend called 911 from one of the survivors’ phones late in the morning. In one of her statements to police, as read by Taylor in court, she said the following: “I don’t know if this was real or if my mind was just, like, playing with me,” Taylor said. “But, from what I think I heard, someone was crying in the bathroom.” GET REAL-TIME UPDATES DIRECTLY ON THE True Crime Hub The witness also said she heard a specific victim running up and down the stairs. But, according to Taylor, she couldn’t have, because that victim was killed in an upstairs bed. And a footprint outside the witness’s bedroom door, Taylor said, was not repeated anywhere else in the home. She questioned why it was even included in the police affidavit. Latah County Deputy Prosecutor Ashley Jennings defended the eyewitness, telling the court the most important thing that came from her in the probable cause affidavit was her description of the suspect as a White male, slender and tall. And that part of her story never changed. DNA from two unknown males Taylor told the court police recovered two other DNA samples from unknown males, one on a handrail and one on a glove outside. With the source of the DNA in question, she said it could mean Kohberger is not related to the crime at all. Follow The Fox True Crime Team On X Hippler seemed unconvinced as Taylor tried to argue this invalidated the probable cause used to arrest her client. Bryan Kohberger enters a courtroom for a hearing at the Latah County Courthouse June 27, 2023, in Moscow, Idaho. “His DNA is still on the knife sheath though. That’s the problem, counsel,” he said. Countdown to Kohberger’s arrest Prior to Kohberger’s arrest at his parents’ house in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, the FBI arranged to have a local trash collector snag his family’s garbage and deliver it to them for testing, the court heard. Lead detectives in the case were in Pennsylvania at the time but watched local authorities conduct the tactical raid via a video feed broadcast from a drone, Payne testified. SIGN UP TO GET True Crime Newsletter Jay Logsdon, one of Kohberger’s defense attorneys, questioned the legitimacy of a SWAT raid on the home and said police “snipers” had been watching Kohberger walking around inside the house. He brought up the arrest of White supremacist mass shooter Dylann Roof, but Hippler cut him off before he could illustrate a point. “As they explained in their own affidavit, they’re essentially watching Mr. Kohberger as he moves around his house, via snipers,” Logsdon said. “They were quite safe, and there was simply no reason to bash the doors in momentarily after yelling from their BearCat.” Brian Kohberger’s former apartment at Washington State University pictured May 21, 2023. It is located about 10 miles from the crime scene. “There’s two issues,” Judge Hippler interjected. “There’s officer safety. There’s also destruction of evidence concerns.” Logsdon downplayed concerns that law enforcement thought Kohberger would have destroyed any evidence. “The only thing they knew is that he’s walking around room to room and that he’s got kitchen gloves on,” Logsdon said. “That’s not all they knew,” Hippler said, adding he would not go into further detail in the open court session. The house at 1122 King Road, where four University of Idaho students were killed Nov. 13, 2022, sits boarded up in Moscow, Idaho Dec. 27, 2023. Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson said there were additional details known to law enforcement that were “quite incriminating” and justified the rapid entry. “They had a no-knock warrant, signed by a judge, that allowed them to enter Kohberger’s residence using means they deemed reasonably construed to ensure both the integrity of evidence and officer safety,” said Paul Mauro, a former NYPD inspector who has been closely following the case. “Whether they were watching him with snipers or not has no legal bearing. These strike me as collateral, dilatory tactics by the defense. “Get on with it.” Kohberger’s shopping list The defense argued that investigators improperly obtained Kohberger’s Amazon history without a warrant. Prosecutors countered that a business record with a third party is not protected by an expectation of privacy. Logsdon called the U.S. a “panopticon,” essentially a large prison with few guards, and a surveillance state and warned that privacy rights needed to be protected. Bryan Kohberger’s defense attorneys, Anne Taylor, left; Elisa Massoth, center; and Jay Logsdon arrive at the Latah County Courthouse in Moscow, Idaho, June 27, 2023. Experts say Amazon is allowed to voluntarily provide the records as part of established case law. “That’s an uphill climb for the defense,” Stoltmann told Fox News Digital. The results Hippler said he had not yet decided whether the defense will receive a Franks hearing but told both sides to send him a list of available dates within the next three weeks. His decisions on most of the other motions are expected to be announced in the near future. In response to a defense request that the court either order prosecutors to hand over additional expert witness disclosures or face sanctions, Hippler said both sides should “over-disclose.” “A word of caution,” he said. “Sometimes there’s dissonance between what an expert thinks they’re gonna talk about and what the lawyer understands from that expert.” The King Road home before its demolition. Kohberger is scheduled for trial later this year in the home invasion murders of Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20. At the time of the murders, Kohberger was studying for a Ph.D. in criminology at nearby Washington State University, about 10 miles across the state line. The victims were all undergrad students at the University of Idaho. Latah County Judge John Judge entered not guilty pleas on Kohberger’s behalf at his arraignment in May 2023. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
