  1. Head hopes he won’t need to repeat Galle heroics Head hopes he won’t need to repeat Galle heroics Travis Head hopes he won’t be relied upon for his part-time offspin on the Sri Lanka tour, despite his heroics on Australia’s previous visit. Head was the surprise packet of Australia’s 10-wicket defeat in the Galle series opener in 2022, taking 4-10 as the hosts collapsed for 113 in the second innings. The South *********** had never taken a Test wicket, but finished the innings with better figures from his 2.5 overs than front-line tweakers Nathan Lyon (4-31) and Mitch Swepson (2-34). This time around Australia has opted for an offspin-heavy squad, omitting leggie Swepson in favour of Lyon, Todd Murphy and Matthew Kuhnemann. Nathan McSweeney, Cooper Connolly and Beau Webster are among other squad members able to bowl offspin, but Head hopes the part-timers can leave it to the experts. “We’ve got three pretty good ones I reckon,” he said. “Hopefully they do the job and I won’t have to do too much.” Lyon, Murphy and left-armer Kuhnemann are a chance to bowl together in the same attack, having done so for three of the four Tests on Australia’s last subcontinent tour to India in 2023. Head supported the idea of playing all three. “When we’ve got that quality, I think we’ve got to go in with full confidence, if it is the three guys, that they’ll do the job,” he said. Kuhnemann is confident of shaking off a dislocated thumb to his non-bowling hand to play in the first Test, having taken part in Australia’s first two training sessions. “From a quick chat I had to him yesterday, he said he was going well,” Head said. Head comes to Sri Lanka following a rare break from cricket, having opted to sit out of Twenty20 commitments with the Adelaide Strikers as Test teammates made their own Big Bash League cameos. He had followed up the spring white-ball tour of the United Kingdom with domestic duties at South Australia and then the five-Test India series, also becoming a father for the second time during that *******. “I needed the break. I was pretty cooked,” Head said. He played Major League Cricket for the Washington Freedom during a busy 2024, but said until he could commit to the BBL he would not take part in franchise cricket other than the Indian Premier League. “Big Bash will be my third team that I play in the future (after Australia and the IPL),” Head said. “So I won’t play anything other than that at this stage. And I think that gives me opportunity to have that time off. “It’s pretty tough to have those eight days off and then go play MLC in a couple of months’ time or The Hundred, so I understand that.” Source link #hopes #wont #repeat #Galle #heroics Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  2. WhatsApp for iOS Testing Multi-Account Support for Managing Multiple Accounts on Same iPhone WhatsApp for iOS Testing Multi-Account Support for Managing Multiple Accounts on Same iPhone WhatsApp is said to be developing a new feature for its iOS app which lets users control multiple accounts on a single device, as per the claims by a feature tracker. It is said to simplify account management and negate the need to carry multiple devices with different accounts or have parallel versions of WhatsApp for iOS. With multi-account support on-the-go, users may be able to switch between different WhatsApp accounts with a simple user interface (UI) option. Multi-Account Support on WhatsApp for iOS According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, Meta Platforms’ messaging client is developing a multi-account feature for release on a future version of the app. It was spotted on WhatsApp for iOS beta app version 25.2.10.70. As the name suggests, it is speculated to enable users to run multiple WhatsApp accounts on the same iPhone, be it personal or business. Multi-Account Support on WhatsApp for iOS Photo Credit: WABetaInfo A screenshot shared by the feature tracker suggests this option will be available in the app settings where users will be able to add new WhatsApp accounts, although switching between them may require an app restart. At present, users still use multiple WhatsApp accounts on the same device but with a workaround. One of them is usually registered as a WhatsApp Business account, even if they do not represent any businesses. WABetaInfo suggests this new functionality is still in development and not even beta testers who have registered themselves via Apple’s TestFlight program may have access to it at the moment. It is speculated to be rolled out to more WhatsApp for iOS beta users over the next few weeks. Notably, a similar feature was reportedly spotted on WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.17.8 and was available to beta testers registered via the Google Play Beta program. However, it is crucial to note that while the instant messaging platform might be working on several new features for various platforms, not all of them make it to the public release. 3. 3 Stocks Down 70% or More That Could Climb Back to $100 Per Share in 2025 3 Stocks Down 70% or More That Could Climb Back to $100 Per Share in 2025 Roku (NASDAQ: ROKU) is a connected-TV platform company; PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL) is a financial technology (fintech) company; and Etsy (NASDAQ: ETSY) is a digital marketplace for buying and selling handmade products. And if you’ve held these stocks over the past several years, then you have my sympathy — all three are down at least 70% from the all-time highs they reached in 2021. If the S&P 500 index had also dropped over the last few years, then perhaps the returns for Roku, PayPal, and Etsy would be more palatable. But unfortunately, the S&P 500 is up 63% since the beginning of 2021, further underscoring the poor performance of these stocks in that *******. Data by YCharts. All three have dropped below $100 per share. But the good news for investors is that it appears the tide is already turning for PayPal and Roku. And I believe a rebound is coming for Etsy as well. Roku stock trades near $84 per share as of this writing, which means it needs to rise about 20% in 2025 to surpass $100. Here’s why I believe that’s possible. First, Roku’s core business metric — active accounts — has continued to climb without fail. At the end of 2021, the company had 60 million active accounts, but it surpassed 90 million in the first week of January, or a 50% increase in just three years. In short, Roku’s platform continues to be adopted at a strong pace despite stiff competition. More hours of video content are being streamed on Roku’s platform than ever before, thanks to its expanding user base. This is a strong foundation for growth. The company generates most of its revenue from advertising, so it now needs to better monetize the massive audience it already has. Advertising dollars go to wherever they’re going to generate the best returns. For digital advertising companies, the ability to demonstrate the value of their ad inventory hinges on the usability of their data. Roku launched Roku Data Cloud in January to bring more transparency to what it offers. Through this new product, it’s possible Roku will be able to better showcase how powerful its platform is. This is just one reason to hope that advertisers will flock to the platform in greater numbers in 2025, providing the opportunity for an accelerated growth rate. The stock is already up over 30% in the last six months. If its growth picks up this year, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Roku stock back over $100 per share. PayPal stock is trading just below $90 per share as of this writing, meaning it only needs an 11% gain in 2025 to clear $100. With recent developments in the business, this seems entirely within reach. Moreover, an 11% gain isn’t unrealistic considering PayPal stock was up 39% in 2024. Story Continues While many investors are familiar with the consumer-facing side of PayPal’s business, the company also has a thriving enterprise-facing business. This includes unbranded checkout services through its Braintree product. In other words, some merchants use PayPal’s Braintree to power digital transactions, but the PayPal brand isn’t displayed on the consumer side. Braintree has driven a lot of growth for PayPal in recent years but at the expense of profits. The chart below shows how free cash flow growth trailed revenue growth significantly until recently. Data by YCharts. In short, PayPal shook up its leadership in 2023, and the new management team is renegotiating many of Braintree’s contracts to support better profit margins. Now, margins are improving, and the company doesn’t seem to have lost customers, which suggests that PayPal is far more relevant than a lot of investors give it credit for. With ongoing profit-margin improvements, PayPal can build on its healthy gains from 2024. Of these three stocks, Etsy has the biggest climb to reach $100 per share, considering it trades at just $53. In other words, it needs to jump a whopping 88% from here. That makes Etsy the biggest longshot of the bunch, but in my view, such a rally isn’t an entirely outrageous proposition for the stock. Consider that Etsy trades at just 10 times its free cash flow — this is really cheap. In fact, Etsy stock could trade at $100 per share right now and still be reasonably valued from a free-cash-flow perspective. But its valuation is depressed because investors have little confidence in the business. It’s hard to blame them. Etsy is struggling to find new buyers — its active buyers actually dipped slightly in the third quarter of 2024. Moreover, the company’s gross merchandise sales are also falling. But it’s not all doom and gloom for Etsy. The company’s Q3 revenue continued to rise 4% year over year thanks to an improved take rate. Management is also getting more disciplined, improving revenue per employee and revenue growth relative to what it’s spending on product development. Furthermore, the company has a plan to drive more spending from active buyers with a new loyalty program, among other ideas. In short, buyers are already online spending money elsewhere. If they start spending more on Etsy’s platform — perhaps with gifting — then the business can grow again. I believe these investments will start paying off for Etsy in 2025. And when investors realize what’s happening, they could quickly move to pick up shares of this undervalued stock, sending the price higher. Among this trio, Roku is likely the riskiest pick because of its ongoing net losses, while PayPal offers the smallest potential upside because it’s quite large already. That leaves Etsy as the best balance between risk and reward. 4. David Beckham shares ‘simple values’ parents taught him David Beckham shares ‘simple values’ parents taught him David Beckham sits down with CNBC’s Tania Bryer at the World Economic Forum 2025. David Beckham opened up about the “simple values” his parents taught him that he passed on to his children, in a conversation with CNBC host Tania Bryer at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The former soccer star attended the WEF for the first time to receive the Crystal Award for philanthropy, for his work protecting vulnerable children as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador since 2005. Bryer asked Beckham about where his passion to make a difference comes from and the values his parents taught him. “I think they instilled in me the right values and it’s the simple values of treating everyone the same and showing respect to people and I tried to do the same with my children,” Beckham said. The 49-year-old father of four said his youngest, Harper, is 13 and his eldest, Brooklyn, is 25. “My boys all know that they let a woman walk through the door before they do. They stand up when a lady leaves the table, they shake hands, eye contact. You know all of those values, their pleases, their thank yous. “All of my kids have said pleases and thank yous from two, three years old. So it’s the simple values that me and Victoria grew up with that we’ve tried to instill into our children,” Beckham added. He said having kids has also inspired his work with children around the world. Beckham has traveled extensively to raise awareness about UNICEF’s work with children. He has visited Cambodia to meet with children who were victims of violence and abuse, South Africa to meet families living with **** and AIDS, and the Philippines, where he met with children who were affected by Typhoon Haiyan. “I’ve taken a few of my kids on different trips. They know exactly the work that I do for UNICEF. They all want to get involved in the UNICEF work that I do. They all want to help in different ways and different charities. “I continue to show them pictures upon pictures upon pictures when I come home from these trips, and it just gives them a sense of actually, what’s happening in the world, and I think that’s so important.” In his awards ceremony speech, Beckham also emphasized that “girls are held back” by poverty, violence, and discrimination. “I want my daughter Harper to have the same opportunities as her brothers, and that should be the case for all girls everywhere. Being a girl shouldn’t determine what you can do, where you can go, and who you can become,” he said. Beckham touched on several topics in his conversation with Bryer including his famed 20-year soccer career from 1992 to 2013, becoming the president and co-owner of soccer club Inter Miami CF, and his thoughts on social media. 11. Zelenskiy again replaces commander of Ukraine’s key eastern front Zelenskiy again replaces commander of Ukraine’s key eastern front MELBOURNE (Reuters) – President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Sunday replaced for the third time in under a year the commander of a key Ukrainian military formation responsible for defending the eastern hub of Pokrovsk that’s under increased risk of falling to Russian forces. Zelenskiy, in his nightly video address, said he put Ukraine’s new commander of ground forces, Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi, in charge of the Khortytsia operational-strategic group, whose area of responsibility includes much of Ukraine’s eastern front. “These are the toughest areas of fighting,” Zelenskiy said, adding that he had discussed the changes at meeting with Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Russia’s capture of the city would bring it closer to seizing the entire Donetsk region, which has been one of President Vladimir Putin’s key goals in his war in Ukraine. Zelensky added that Drapatyi’s appointment will help to combine the combat work of the army with the proper training of brigades. “It is the front-line needs that should determine the standards for staffing and training of brigades,” he said. Drapatyi will replace Major General Andriy Hnatov, who has been in charge of Khortytsia since June and who will become a Deputy Chief of the General Staff to run training and communication. Russian forces have been steadily advancing in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region towards Pokrovsk, bypassing it from the south and trying to cut off supply routes to Ukraine’s troops. Pokrovsk, which had a pre-war population of around 60,000, has been one of Ukraine’s main defensive strongholds in the Donetsk region and the focus of fierce fighting for months. 16. Vivo V50, Vivo Y19e Reportedly Spotted on BIS Website Suggesting Imminent India Launch Vivo V50, Vivo Y19e Reportedly Spotted on BIS Website Suggesting Imminent India Launch Vivo is expected to launch new smartphones in India soon. A recent report claimed that two handsets were recently spotted on the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) website, suggesting an imminent launch in the country. They are expected to be the Vivo V50 and the Vivo Y19e. The former could be a rebrand of the Vivo S20, which was unveiled in China in November 2024. Previously, the purported Vivo V50 appeared on Taiwan’s National Communications Commission (NCC) website, which suggested its design, dimensions, and battery details. Vivo V50, Vivo Y19e Spotted on BIS Website Vivo smartphones with the model number V2427 and V2431 were spotted on the BIS website, according to a MySmartPrice report. They are said to be the Vivo V50 and the Vivo Y19e, respectively. The report notes that an earlier NBTC listing confirms the former moniker, while a previous IMEI listing suggested the latter. The BIS listing does not reveal much about the expected handsets but hints at the imminent launch of the phones in India. The NCC listing of the Vivo V50 suggested that the phone will launch in blue, grey and white colour options. It is expected to have a design similar to the Vivo S20 model and is said to be a rebrand of the phone. Connectivity options are expected to include Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, NFC, and GPS. The Vivo V50 is expected to measure 160mm in length and 75mm in width, however, its expected thickness is not yet known. The height and width of the purported handset are similar to the Vivo S20’s dimensions of 160 x 74 x 7.9mm. The older NCC listing suggests that the Vivo V50 could get a 5,870mAh rated battery, which will likely be marketed as 6,000mAh. It is expected to support 90W wired fast charging. Notably, the ******** version of the Vivo S20 carries a 6,500mAh battery with support for 80W fast charging. We can expect to see more details about the Vivo Y19e surface online soon. It will likely join the Vivo Y19 lineup which includes the base Vivo Y19 and Vivo Y19s. Affiliate links may be automatically generated – see our ethics statement for details. 17. 19 Stories About When People Learned That HR Is Not Their Friend That Left Me Speechless 19 Stories About When People Learned That HR Is Not Their Friend That Left Me Speechless Recently, I wrote an article about the times people found out the hard way that HR/the workplace was not their friend, and in the comments, BuzzFeed Community members sounded off with some stories of their own. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to share a few more, so here are some of the most interesting: 1.”I told my boss that if he expected me to be on call 24/7, he needed to start paying me a salary instead of hourly. He said no.” “I contacted HR, and they said I’m right, my boss should be the one on call, and for me to stop taking after-hours calls immediately. My boss later told me to ignore HR because they didn’t know what they were talking about, and I did in fact have to be on call 24/7 instead of him. I reported him to HR again, and was told to just do what he said. He was also reported to HR by other employees for saying a number of inappropriate things to me. I only know about this because he told me.” —kmskoby Nitat Termmee / Getty Images 2.”At a former workplace, our head of HR was very manipulative. She was super bubbly and friendly, but made sure to throw you under the bus when it mattered.” “Anyhow, she would always chat with my friend and I in the morning and knew everything that was going on in my life. After working there for several years I started having heart problems resulting in a need to wear a monitor for a whole month, and my partner several weeks later was hit by a car and needed two surgeries. So for months, I was missing work for my own appointments… and also my partner’s appointments, since he could not drive.” “My manager was fairly new in her position and let me know that our HR manager had sent out an email saying I’d lose my health insurance due to so much lost time, even though I was still working full-time hours.” “She knew why I was missing time, and instead of setting me up with FMLA, she threatened the insurance and my paycheck that I desperately needed at the time since my partner couldn’t work. I ended up quitting after having a big meeting with her where I called her out for being shady and committing multiple labor violations during my time there. She told me I was wrong and eventually tried to blame my manager instead, who was nothing but kind to me. She’s still going strong at the company, and I know many good employees who quit because of her.” —babygotbackpain Nitat Termmee / Getty Images 3.”I went through this with an old boss who was ********* harassing me. He was the CFO of a large ad agency. I was the only female in his corporate entourage except for his admin.” A person making a concerned expression while wearing a plaid shirt and tie, with shelves of products in the background and a Peacock logo in the corner Person with a surprised expression covers their mouth. Background shows a refrigerator NBC / Via giphy.com “He never made a physical move, and all his verbal harassment was under the radar, so to speak, but he made his intentions clear. He tried so many ways to get me to ‘let my hair down’ as he so often put it. After six months, I went to HR, and they told me I was lucky to be working with such a highly qualified man and that I must be mistaken as he may be unconventional, but he gets the job done. We went through a merger not long after, and all of corporate was laid off. My boss got a nice big golden parachute (i.e. a lot of money to leave) while the rest of us had to finish our projects and exit. HR is there to protect the company, not the employees.” —lunallee212 4.”I worked in a non-chain restaurant that had a drive-thru. One night, we had a car drive up, and everyone inside was wildly drunk. I did not need them or the potential mayhem they could cause on my conscience, so I called the police.” “I later found out that the driver blew over TWICE the legal limit. A couple days later, the restaurant owner scolded me and said, ‘It’s bad for business if our customers think we’ll call the police on them.’ I promised not to do it again, but I darn sure would have without hesitation.” —wanderingstorm Carlofranco / Getty Images 5.”I was 16 and working as an ‘administrative assistant’ at the overnight camp I had attended since childhood. My boss had known me since I was 10, and I was a little ***** at that age, which I don’t believe she ever forgot.” “Anyhoo, my mother had been hospitalized and I was in the midst of a full-blown panic attack in the office, being comforted by my other teen friends, when my boss walked in, told me I was being ‘disruptive to the other staff,’ and threatened to have me escorted off camp grounds by police. The other staff stared in disbelief. I called her a ****** (in a religious camp, mind you!) and ran back to my room. Part of me still hasn’t forgiven her 12 years later.” —libm Maskot / Getty Images/Maskot 6.”Got pulled into the manager’s office and told I was being written up for watching porn on my phone.” “The union steward told me to just sign the write-up and not offer any explanation. I declined and showed them all that I still used a T9 phone.” —cgardner0683 Pascal Deloche / Getty Images 7.”I ALMOST got written up for this, but essentially pulled a righteous speech out of my butt and saved myself. I worked at a movie theater for a while that also made food. One of those places. At the end of the night, management wanted us to throw away all the food that had hit expiration and been used. No big deal, except that no employee was allowed to take anything after it was removed from inventory and before it was thrown in the trash. Kind of a stupid policy, but whatever.” “The kicker was, they wanted us to throw away all this perfectly fine food and then pour the used oil on it so that the homeless couldn’t eat out of the dumpsters. I wouldn’t do it.” “If someone is desperate enough to eat out of a dumpster, I’m not destroying possibly their only chance at food. I put the oil at the bottom and the food on top. I didn’t get caught for months until a manager finally caught me and started to rant at me. I pulled a speech out about why it was so disgusting to pour oil on the food and blah blah blah. I made him feel bad enough that he didn’t write me up and didn’t report me. But he did tell me not to tell anyone I wasn’t destroying the food in the dumpsters. I quit shortly after but still think that’s a horrible policy. FYI, we put the oil in these big containers with caps. We had to intentionally un-cap and pour them on the food. It made the dumpster disgusting because it was covered in a layer of oil and STANK way worse than it would. When you just put it at the bottom, that wasn’t a problem.” —lalalace1640 “Horrible disregard for human suffering aside, that sounds like a fire hazard and possible EPA violation. I simply replied to her email, ‘If we were working past 5 p.m. for any reason, do we get that time back? Because last night I was here and working until 9:30 p.m. and by your logic, you owe me 4.5 hours.’ She never replied and didn’t speak to me at all for a month.” —Anonymous 9.”I worked for a well-known taco franchise, and my assistant general manager took one of my coworkers home because it was cold out, we were all friends, and he didn’t have a car. We both ended up quitting within a month.” —Anonymous 10.”In my 20s, I worked part-time at a local large East Coast restaurant chain. I came into work one day with a package of wine coolers in a sealed bag.” “I asked the manager if I could keep them in the walk-in until the end of my shift and was told yes, as long as they stayed in the bag, unopened. At the end of my shift, without my knowing it, two young (under 21 years of age) fellow employees had ripped open the bag and consumed a few of the wine coolers.” Psisa / Getty Images/iStockphoto “They were drunk by the time I was done with my four-hour shift, and I was confronted by the manager about allowing the two younger employees access to the wine coolers, even though I was waiting on customers at the front of the store for my whole shift.” “HR contacted me two days later to inform me that I was fired. I told them that the manager had said it was okay to keep the wine coolers in the walk-in as long as they were in the bag, and I never even mentioned that I’d brought wine coolers into the store to the two 20-year-olds who got drunk. Long story short, I was fired for the indiscretion of bringing alcohol onto company property and for getting two underage punks drunk, even though the little ****** stole from me. And the manager never got reprimanded for even saying yes to my bringing the wine coolers into work in a sealed package.” —Anonymous Comedy Central / Via giphy.com 11.”I was scolded for wrongdoing when the major jewelry retail manager I worked for was in on it.” “A customer came to pick up his order. The computer read it was paid in full and I gave him the ring. The next day, the store manager asked where said ring was. I told her what happened and was told that the $500 ring wasn’t paid for, and I ‘should have asked someone about it.’ I didn’t know it at the time, but I later found that she and other salespeople were manipulating the computer system so orders appeared to be paid in full, to get sales numbers and commissions posted sooner. It also meant she was knowingly floating negative store funds and non-existent inventory. No wonder she didn’t write me up for giving away jewelry!” —Anonymous Craig Hastings / Getty Images 12.”When I worked for UPS I found some small toy laying on the ground of a trailer I was unloading. I took it to the security station on the way out, where everyone walks through a metal detector and gets wanded, and turned the toy into them.” “They asked for my badge when I turned it in. The next day when I went into work they had me go into the HR office and talk to them. They told me since I turned it into security and not my manager, they considered it is stealing. I could either quit for personal reasons or be fired for stealing. When I asked the union representative there if I could do anything he just said he couldn’t help me and was only there as a courtesy. WTF was I paying all those union fees for? The best part was security still had me go through the metal detector and be wanded one final time on the way out.” —Anonymous Jarretera / Getty Images 13.”I had a serious allergy attack at work. My manager blew off the comment but I took the incident to HR. After a month of no action that I could see to reprimand or correct this guy’s behavior, and now he was bullying me, I told the story to my manager’s manager. Still no action, but I got a call from HR asking me if I thought the man’s behavior and my response was just a clash of our personalities. Long story short, I started sending out resumes three days after the discriminatory comment. Had another job lined up within a month and gave notice. My last week there, the guy got fired because someone else had gotten seriously hurt on the job site.” —Anonymous 15.”I was a new teacher at a daycare center where staff got in trouble for not ratting each other out to the director (which I didn’t know yet).” “There was a boy in my class who had a lot of food allergies. One day, I prepared lunch for the class, triple-checking each item against his ‘do not serve’ list, and found everything was safe to give him. I put his plate down in front of him but, as he reached for the food, my assistant teacher grabbed it and threw it in the trash. She thought I’d given him something he couldn’t eat, but we checked the list together and realized she was mistaken. No big deal. We gave him more and moved on with the day. However…” Seksan Mongkhonkhamsao / Getty Images “The other teacher in the room at the time told the director a false version of the story and we were both called to her desk the next day. We explained the situation, that it was a misunderstanding and the child was safe, but she wrote us both up anyway for endangering his life.” “I told her that was ridiculous, that neither of us had done anything wrong (especially my assistant who was attempting to save his life, or so she thought) but we were dismissed. That afternoon, I took it upon myself to apologize to the child’s mother and reassure her that he hadn’t eaten anything he was allergic to. She had no idea what I was talking about. For 24 hours, the director thought her son had eaten something dangerous and hadn’t called her. That night, I emailed the daycare owner about the incident, and her response was to fire me ‘based on what happened today.’ So I was fired for NOT almost killing a child. I just laughed, walked out and told my supervisor HR was planning to terminate me and left.” —Anonymous 18.”At a major software company I once had a supervisor, let’s call her K, who insisted I run four separate teams (over half the staff on hand).” “Halfway through the year, I told her I had some medical issues (resulting in a reasonable accommodation), that I couldn’t handle four times the workload of everyone else anymore, and that they needed to hire more managers. Their response was to fire another one instead. She said to hang in there and do the best I could. I listed the duties I’d have to ask others to do to keep up. Come review time, I got a negative review listing everything I didn’t do. Which was exactly the list I gave her. Verbatim. As a result, I got no bonus and no raise that year. For doing four people’s jobs. I hate her.” —Anonymous Daniel De La Hoz / Getty Images 19.And finally: “My brother’s high school ex-girlfriend became my boss. She said she would fire me. It took a year, but she did it by saying I said derogatory comments about another employee.” “When I went to HR I found out they were best friends. I was gone and am banned for life from working there. Everyone went to HR and said she was lying. Even unemployment said this was not a reason for termination. But it was time to move on.” —Anonymous Remember, kids: “HR isn’t there to protect anyone, they’re there to ensure that labor law is being followed by both the employer and the employees.” “The problem is that HR folks are also employees and can be fired by upper management, so they’ll tend to lean in favor of management out of self-preservation. I strongly believe that all HR professionals should be independent contractors bound by iron-clad contracts so they can truly be impartial…CYA by documenting everything, and any and all disciplinary action ought to be documented and signed by both parties.”— Former HR manager, secretlydevito These stories are absolutely wild, so I want to hear all your opinions down in the comments below. 19. ‘Be brave’: Aussies mull radical batting experiment ‘Be brave’: Aussies mull radical batting experiment Australia will consider taking the drastic step of changing its batting order mid-Test match to combat its selection dilemma at the top for the Sri Lanka series. Travis Head and Sam Konstas arrived in Galle seemingly locked in a battle to partner veteran opener Usman Khawaja for the first of two matches beginning on January 29. Teenage swashbuckler Konstas is the incumbent and helped seal Australia’s first series win over India in a decade with valuable contributions across his first two Test matches. Australia’s middle-order aggressor on home soil, Head averaged 55.75 runs as David Warner’s injury replacement during the final two and a half Tests on the last subcontinent to India in 2023. “I don’t know where I’m going to bat at this stage,” Head said ahead of Monday’s main training session for the first Test. “We’ll see how that wicket plays out over the next couple of days.” But Head revealed Australia had been discussing the prospect of shifting its batting order mid-game if pitch conditions called for flexibility. Questions remain as to how much spin will be on offer from day one in the Test matches, with the pitch playing very differently in Galle across Australia’s last two visits in 2022 and 2016. South *********** veteran Head is more experienced in Asia than Konstas, who is embarking on his first subcontinent Test tour, but has not always been able to make the best of turning wickets. Head said when it came to the opener debate, Australia may be able to have its cake and eat it too. “It’s been a topic of conversation for the last little bit in this team on whether the *********** first innings, second innings, why doesn’t the order change?” Head said. “Why can’t we be flexible? What moves? How can we be brave? “That hasn’t played out as such yet. Is this the tour to do it? We’ll wait and see.” The current *********** team has often changed its batting order mid-game to deploy a nightwatchman, usually Nathan Lyon, but a premeditated mid-game switch would be unprecedented. But in the era of Konstas reverse-ramp shots and booming support for Test cricket, Head feels the time is ripe for change. “The game is evolving, so why not continue to see where we can make jumps and leaps and where can we get an advantage?” he said. “If that’s using people in different positions, it’s not traditionally done a hell of a lot … (but) this team’s experienced enough and in a great position where players will be open to that if needed to be.” Head averaged 7.7 runs at his usual No.5 spot across Australia’s last visit to Sri Lanka – the worst figures for any bilateral series of his 54-match Test career. His subcontinent form was so dire that Head found himself dropped for the start of the 2023 India series, despite shining against the West Indies and South Africa in the previous home summer. Head returns to Sri Lanka ready to play with his trademark positive intent regardless of his position in the order, admitting the last tour to Sri Lanka was one to forget. “I wasn’t pleased with the way that tour went,” he said. “I did go through a bit of a transition here and in Pakistan last time, tried to play a bit more traditionally. “That (2023) Indian series was one which could have gone one way or the other. I don’t play well and I probably never see a subcontinent tour again. “Or I go out there and do what I’ve been doing the last couple of years and go out there a little bit more relaxed. “So I’ll draw on that. “I feel comfortable wherever I need to be to win the Test. I ain’t bothered where I bat anymore. I haven’t been for a while.” Source link #brave #Aussies #mull #radical #batting #experiment Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  23. Five Questions for the ECB Five Questions for the ECB By Yoruk Bahceli and Stefano Rebaudo LONDON (Reuters) – The European Central Bank meets on Thursday for the first time since Donald Trump returned to office, leaving U.S. tariff threats looming over the euro zone’s sluggish economy and potentially complicating the economic outlook. Traders reckon further rate cuts are a done deal, so the question is whether the ECB drops any new hints on the path ahead. “They expect President (Christine) Lagarde to say the door to further rate cuts is open,” said Bruno Cavalier, chief economist at Oddo. Here are five key questions for markets: 1/ What will the ECB do on Thursday? Most likely, cut the key deposit rate by another 25 basis points to 2.75%. Markets fully price the move and the ECB removed language from its guidance in December that had pledged to keep rates restrictive. “There has been no change to the outlook since December,” said Pictet Wealth Management’s head of macroeconomic research Frederik Ducrozet. 2/ How does Trump’s return change ECB thinking on tariff risks? It doesn’t so far, economists reckon. U.S. President Trump did not impose day-one tariffs and said the U.S. is not ready for universal ones. However, he put Canada, Mexico and China in the firing line and complained about the terms of trade with the European Union. Trump told the World Economic Forum in Davos via video last week that other economies will face tariffs if they make their products anywhere but the U.S. While some analysts take comfort in the initial approach being more measured than expected, that could change. For the ECB, it’s all about how tariffs impact euro zone inflation, whether directly or through their impact on demand. Lagarde said last week the bank is not “overly concerned” about Trump’s policies exporting inflation to Europe — comments ABN AMRO economists took to signal the ECB would see tariffs as mainly being negative for growth. 3/ How far does the ECB need to cut rates? Traders expect almost four rate cuts from the ECB this year and some policymakers have explicitly agreed, pointing to rates falling towards 2%. That would put rates within estimates of the so-called neutral rate, which neither restricts nor accommodates growth. But some hawks sound more cautious on the pace, with top hawk Isabel Schnabel recently warning that the bank needs to have a “deep think” on how far and quickly to cut. Once rates reach 2.5% “they will have to think a bit harder to decide where to go”, said PIMCO portfolio manager Konstantin Veit. Story Continues But given a weak economy, the risk is skewed towards rates falling to 1.75%, he added. Lagarde said last week the neutral level was anywhere between 1.75% and 2.25%. 4/ How worrying is the uptick in inflation for the ECB? Not very, economists reckon. Inflation rose to the highest since July at 2.4% in December, driven by higher energy prices and costs in services, where inflation isn’t budging from 4%. Yet the rise is in line with the bank’s expectations and chief economist Philip Lane is confident wage growth is slowing and will quickly pull services inflation lower. He has also warned keeping rates too high for too long could push inflation below target. While the ECB only targets inflation, as it nears 2%, “it’s not as simple as just being a single mandate because after all, growth is important if you want to see where inflation is going to go,” said Danske Bank chief analyst Piet Christiansen. 5/ What if the Fed stops cutting rates? The ECB could slow its cuts, but it depends on the reason. Traders’ Fed rate cut bets have swung in January given uncertainty around the U.S. inflation outlook. BofA and BNP Paribas expect the Fed to stay on hold this year. “If they don’t cut because the economy is strong in the U.S., it’s also good news for Europe…. the ECB could actually be tempted to cut a little bit less,” Pictet’s Ducrozet said. “If they don’t cut because of a stagflation kind of scenario, then it’s a different story and I don’t think it makes a big difference for the ECB,” he said, noting a fall in the euro to parity, from almost $1.05 at present, would not be a big focus.
