The Case for Passive Investing May Have Never Been More Precarious
The Case for Passive Investing May Have Never Been More Precarious
Overseas investors have never been more bullish on U.S. equities than they are today.
“Over the past three months, foreigners purchased US equities at a record pace of $76.5B,” reports Yardeni Research (via Daily Chartbook).
The firm continues,
“One note of caution: Their buying has a record of being a contrary indicator. They tend to be big buyers right before bear markets.”
Meanwhile, corporate insiders have never been more bearish. Among, “publicly traded corporations that so far this year have recorded any insider transactions from officers or directors,” reports Mark Hulbert,
“There’s been net buying since the beginning of the year at just 12.1% of those companies.”
Moreover, aside from consumer staples, “Insiders in the other 10 sectors are all negative. Insiders are negative on both growth and value. Additionally, insiders are pessimistic on small-cap, mid- and large-cap firms,” insider expert Nejat Seyhun tells Hulbert.
This extreme bearishness on the part of America’s top executives may be due in part to the fact that stock prices are extremely expensive at current levels. In fact, as Simon White notes,
“The market, based on a broad swathe of measures, has never been as overvalued as it is today.”
If the price you pay determines your rate of return, then this suggests long-term returns from today’s prices could be very poor relative to what investors have come to expect from in recent years.
It may also be because macro trends are not supportive of the sort of earnings gains currently priced into the broad stock market.
“Historically, weakness in the capacity utilization/dollar ratio has led to weaker profit growth.
Since mid-2024, this ratio has been declining and is now showing a substantial weakness coming in the first half of 2025,” writes Jim Paulsen.
With analysts expecting strong earnings growth in 2025, this could lead to disappointment in the quarters ahead.
Passive investors should be aware that they are systematically taking the other side of this bearish corporate insider trading activity. This is just one of several forms of index composition changes that can be costly over time.
A recent research paper reports (via Matt Levine),
“This rebalancing approach successfully captures the market as it evolves, but effectively buys at high prices and sells at low prices.
A long-short portfolio capturing the intensive margin rebalancing trades of index funds has an average alpha of -3% to -4% per year.”
And to think investors justify the decision to go passive largely by pointing to low transaction costs.

S&P 500: What’s in Store From 2025 to 2029?
S&P 500: What’s in Store From 2025 to 2029?
On December 29, 2019, I posted on the which analyzed its history from 1932, and which presented a long-view forecast of what’s in store for the 2020s and 2030s.
Overall, it showed that, for the most part, the SPX has been a strong BUY candidate for longer-term investors over an average of 30 years running, and that it was likely to be repeated for another 10-20 years, generally speaking, based on the following chart (each candle represents one year).
As can be seen on the following current monthly chart, price dropped a bit from that date before it began to rise, break above the long-term channel and rise again, then drop and retest the breakout level, before, finally, proceeding to form a new and steeper channel and upward trend (defined by an Andrew’s Pitchfork technical drawing).
In keeping with the above-referenced bullish outlook for the 2020s, I’d expect to see the SPX trading around one of two possible levels by the end of President Trump’s second term (January 20, 2029) barring any catastrophic events, of course:
9,500 at the upper edge of the lower 1/4 of the channel, or
11,000 at the upper edge of entire channel
So, we’ll see what happens, and, as I explained in the above-referenced post, as long as the remains strong until then, one of those two scenarios is a very real possibility.

Trump makes 2,000-pound bombs available to Israel, undoing Biden pause
Trump makes 2,000-pound bombs available to Israel, undoing Biden pause
By Steve Holland, Nandita Bose and Kanishka Singh
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican President Donald Trump said on Saturday he has instructed the U.S. military to release a hold imposed by Democratic former President Joe Biden on the supply of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel.
The move was widely expected.
“We released them. We released them today. And they’ll have them. They paid for them and they’ve been waiting for them for a long time. They’ve been in storage,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
Biden put the hold on the delivery of those bombs due to concern over the impact they could have on the civilian population, particularly in Gaza’s Rafah, during Israel’s war in the ************ enclave.
One 2,000-pound bomb can rip through thick concrete and metal, creating a wide blast radius. Reuters reported last year that the Biden administration had sent thousands of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel after the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by ************ ****** militants from Gaza but had put a hold on one shipment.
Washington has announced assistance for Israel worth billions of dollars since the war began.
When asked why he released the powerful bombs, Trump responded, “because they bought them.”
Earlier on Saturday, Trump said on the Truth Social platform, “A lot of things that were ordered and paid for by Israel, but have not been sent by Biden, are now on their way!”
Trump and Biden have been strong supporters of U.S. ally Israel, even as Washington has come under criticism from human rights advocates over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza from Israel’s military assault. Protesters have unsuccessfully demanded an arms embargo.
Washington says it is helping Israel defend against Iran-backed militant groups like ****** in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.
A Gaza ceasefire went into effect a week ago and has led to the release of some Israeli hostages held by ****** in exchange for ************ prisoners held by Israel. Before his inauguration on Jan. 20, Trump had warned there would be “hell to pay” if hostages held by ****** in Gaza were not released.
****** took around 250 hostages during the 2023 attack on Israel in which about 1,200 people were killed, according to Israeli tallies. It sparked the latest bloodshed in the decades-old Israeli-************ conflict.
Israel’s subsequent military assault on Gaza has killed more than 47,000 people, according to the Gaza health ministry, and led to accusations of genocide and war crimes that Israel denies. It also displaced nearly all of Gaza’s population and caused a hunger crisis.

NZ relaxes visa rules so tourists can work remotely
NZ relaxes visa rules so tourists can work remotely
Foreign visitors to New Zealand are now able to work remotely while in the country, the government says.
Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis said the change, which came into effect on Monday, was part of a plan to boost the economy.
“Making the country more attractive to ‘digital nomads’ – people who work remotely while travelling – will boost New Zealand’s attractiveness as a destination,” she said.
Tourism was NZ’s second-largest export earner, generating revenue of almost $NZ11 billion and creating almost 200,000 jobs, Ms Willis said.
However, Statistics New Zealand data showed the sector had not yet completely bounced back from the COVID-19 pandemic border closures, with international visitors at 86 per cent of 2019 levels.
Immigration Minister Erica Stanford said the visa change reflected the realities of the modern, flexible working environment.
“This is a brand-new market of tourist New Zealand can tap into,” she said.
“We want people to see our country as the ideal place to visit and work while they do it.”
Those wanting to work remotely for more than 90 days should look at possible tax implications, Ms Stanford said.
“The change will enable many visitors to extend their stays which will lead to more money being spent in the country.”
NZ consists of two main islands and is a top destination for many travellers thanks to its unspoilt nature, huge glaciers, fjords and volcanoes.

S&P 500 E-Mini: Bulls Need Follow-through Buying This Week
S&P 500 E-Mini: Bulls Need Follow-through Buying This Week
The bulls need follow-through buying to increase the odds of a breakout into new all-time highs territory and a continuation of the bull trend. The bears want a reversal from a double top (Dec 6) and a lower high major trend reversal. If the market trades higher, they want a failed breakout above the all-time high followed by a higher major trend reversal.
The Weekly S&P 500 Emini Chart
This week’s Emini candlestick was a follow-through bull bar closing near its upper half with a small tail above.
Last week, we said the market may trade at least a little higher. Traders would see if the bulls could create a follow-through bull bar and if they do, the odds of a retest of the all-time high will increase. Or if the market would trade slightly higher but close with a long tail or a bear body instead.
The bulls see the market as being in a broad bull channel and want the market to continue sideways to up for months.
They see the recent move (to Jan 13) as a two-legged pullback and want the market to resume higher from a double bottom bull flag (Nov 4 and Jan 13).
They want a breakout into new all-time highs followed by a measured move based on the height of the recent 18-week trading range.
They must continue to create sustained follow-through buying to increase the odds of the bull trend resuming.
The bears got a two-legged pullback but the follow-through selling below the 20-week EMA was limited.
They see the current move as a retest of the prior trend extreme high (Dec 6) and a bull leg within the 18-week trading range.
They want a reversal from a double top (Dec 6) and a lower high major trend reversal.
If the market trades higher, they want a failed breakout above the all-time high followed by a higher major trend reversal.
Since this week’s candlestick is a bull bar closing in its upper half, it is a buy signal bar for next week.
The December 6 high could be an area of resistance.
Traders buying here could be buying near the high of the 18-week trading range, which is not an ideal setup.
For now, the market may still trade at least a little higher.
Traders will see if the bulls can create a follow-through bull bar breaking into new all-time territory.
Or will the market stall around the December 6 high area instead?
Odds slightly favor any pullback to be minor and not lead to a reversal.
The Daily S&P 500 Emini Chart:
The market traded higher for the week in a tight bull channel with gaps.
Last week, we said the market may trade slightly higher early in the week. Traders would see if the bulls could create follow-through buying breaking far above the January 6 or December 26 high, or if the market would trade slightly higher but stall, forming a lower high major trend reversal instead.
The market traded above the December 26 high and tested near the all-time high.
The bulls see the market trading in a broad bull channel and want the move to continue for months. They want an endless pullback bull trend.
They want a retest of the all-time high (Dec 6) from a wedge bull flag (Dec 20, Jan 2, and Jan 13) and a double bottom bull flag (Nov 4 and Jan 13).
The move up since January 13 is in the form of a 9-bar bull microchannel. That means persistent buying. Odds favor buyers below the first pullback.
The bulls must create a strong breakout above the December 6 high with follow-through buying to increase the odds of a trend resumption.
The bears got a three-legged pullback testing near the October/November lows.
They see the current move as a retest of the prior trend’s extreme high.
They hope that the strong move up (from Jan 13) is a buy vacuum and a bull leg within the small trading range.
They want a reversal from a lower high major trend reversal and a double top.
If the market trades higher, they want a failed breakout above the all-time high (Dec 6) and a reversal from a higher high major trend reversal.
For now, the market may trade slightly higher next week. Odds slightly favor buyers below the first pullback from the 9-bar bull microchannel.
Traders will see if the bulls can create more follow-through buying breaking far above the all-time high (Dec 6).
Or will the market trade slightly higher but stall around the December 6 high area instead?
The odds slightly favor any pullback to be minor and not lead to a reversal.

‘The profitability of grain crops is approaching zero’
‘The profitability of grain crops is approaching zero’
Russian farmers, the world’s most prolific wheat producers, are pivoting away from the crop to more profitable ones after a year of significant losses due to extreme weather events.
What’s happening?
According to a report from Malay Mail, Russian farmers have decided to plant less wheat and focus more on peas, lentils, and sunflowers after a year of catastrophic losses and low prices drove the profit margin close to zero.
Russia’s wheat crop production dropped to 83 million tons in 2024 after sitting at 92.8 million tons in 2023 and a record 104.2 million tons in 2022. Frosts and drought that killed significant portions of the crops were to blame, as were massive rains during harvesting season that made getting the wheat harvested almost impossible.
Add falling wheat prices around the globe, and farmers have started pivoting to other crops in an effort to make a profit.
“The profitability of grain crops is approaching zero,” said Dmitry Garnov, CEO of Rostagro Group, which owns massive swaths of farmland in rural Russia. “The company has reduced the volume of winter wheat sowing by 30 per cent. There are two drivers now — soybeans and sunflower.”
Why is crop loss important?
Climate-related crop loss is increasing around the world. As weather patterns shift and change due to our warming planet and weather events such as droughts and massive storms become more common, crops that thrived in one place are much tougher to farm now.
Watch now: Here’s why your morning cup of coffee might be at risk
A massive country such as Russia deciding to pivot away from its primary crop may be a canary in the coal mine, a harbinger of what could be coming globally.
Additionally, crop loss at this level could impact the price of flour, bread, and other wheat-based products. While it’s unlikely to create scarcity at this point, if trends continue in the direction they’re headed, that could change.
What’s being done about crop loss?
Russian farmers are abandoning wheat in favor of more profitable crops with less risk, including soybeans, sunflowers, and lentils.
More broadly, scientists are working on ways to make crops more resilient in the face of our swiftly shifting weather patterns.
Shorter corn stalks help the plant stand in the face of high winds from storms. Researchers have found a gene that can help crops become more flood-resistant, which is incredibly useful as rain becomes less predictable and more severe. Scientists have also found a gene that can help plants become hardier and more efficient at photosynthesis.

Power cuts and flood alerts as Storm Herminia hits Wales
Hundreds of homes are without power and flood alerts have been issued as Storm Herminia hits Wales.
A Met Office alert for heavy rain began at midday Sunday and remains in place until the end of Monday.
More than 700 homes were without power in south and west Wales on Sunday afternoon.
On Monday morning, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) issued 15 flood alerts across Wales.
It comes after Storm Éowyn caused disruption on Friday and Saturday, including multiple power cuts and gusts of up to 93mph (159km/h).
The Met Office said: “Periods of heavy rain could eventually lead to some flooding of roads and properties.
“Spells of heavy rain are likely to affect parts of Wales during Sunday, followed by further showers or longer spells of rain during Monday.”
It warned up to 40mm (1.6in) of rainfall was widely likely, with isolated totals of up to 70mm (2.8in) mostly likely over high ground.
A wind warning is in place from 06:00 on Monday until 06:00 on Tuesday across across a large swathe of the country excluding Anglesey, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham.
The National Grid said, as of 14:30 on Sunday, it had 13 power cuts, affecting about 773 homes.
The worst affected areas were Merlin’s Bridge in Pembrokeshire, Splott in Cardiff, and Aberporth in Ceredigion.

Nearly half a century after Honolulu teen’s killing, modern DNA testing leads to arrest of a former schoolmate
Nearly half a century after Honolulu teen’s killing, modern DNA testing leads to arrest of a former schoolmate
Susie Chun Oakland was a sophomore when she arrived at McKinley High School in Honolulu – a crime scene – that Monday morning nearly a half century ago.
One of her teachers had just found the body of another student on the second floor of the English building, Chun Oakland said. Dawn Momohara, 16, was partially clothed, with an orange cloth tightly wrapped around her neck, police said. She appeared to have been ********* assaulted and strangled.
In a close-knit community in Hawaii’s capital and most populous city, nerves were frayed long after the discovery of Dawn’s body on March 21, 1977.
“It was our first experience with a crime like that. It was very sad that someone actually died that way,” said Chun Oakland, program coordinator for an Oahu senior center that offers services to kupuna, the Hawaiian term for elders. “People were afraid. In our state, we take care of each other, you know. We grow up looking out for one another.”
Still, it would be decades before authorities would name a suspect in the teen’s killing.
On Tuesday, Gideon Castro, 66, a McKinley High School graduate who previously told police he knew the victim, was arrested at the Utah nursing home where he lived, Honolulu Police Department Lt. Deena Thoemmes told reporters.
Castro was charged with second-degree ******* after DNA testing not available in the 1970s helped identify him nearly 50 years later, Thoemmes said. It’s not clear if he has an attorney.
“I’m happy for her family that this case was resolved,” Chun Oakland, a former state legislator, said of Dawn. “I’m sad there are so many other cases that are not. It’s a mix of emotions. But I’m glad we have people and professionals, as well as community, that have not given up.”
Numerous leads go dark
Dawn’s mother last heard from her daughter the day before she was found dead. The teen had received a call from an unknown male that Sunday morning, and later told her mother she was going to a shopping center with friends, according to Thoemmes.
When Dawn did not return home that night, friends and family drove around the school campus looking for her, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported at the time. It was not clear whether the teen – described by classmates as quiet and shy – made it to the shopping center. Dawn was reported missing hours before her body was found outside a classroom.
In the days after Dawn was killed, Thoemmes said, detectives interviewed her friends, family and acquaintances. Police released sketches of a man and a car that two witnesses described seeing near the school’s English building the night before she was found dead.
A sketch of a person of interest in the killing of Dawn Momohara released by the Honolulu Police Department in 1977. – Honolulu Police Department
Castro and his brother were among the schoolmates detectives interviewed during the initial stages of the investigation, Thoemmes said.
Castro at the time told police he had met Dawn at a school dance in 1976, the year he graduated. He said he last saw her at a carnival the following year, when they talked for about 15 minutes and he told her he was in the US Army Reserve, according to Thoemmes.
“Despite following up on numerous leads and interviewing multiple individuals, investigators were unable to identify a suspect at that time,” she said.
The case went cold for decades
Honolulu Police Department Lt. Deena Thoemmes announces an arrest in the killing of Dawn Momohara at a Tuesday news conference. – Honolulu Police Department
It wasn’t until 42 years later, in 2019, that cold case detectives – aided by modern DNA testing – began making headway in the investigation following analysis of evidence from Dawn’s shorts and underwear, Thoemmes said.
Investigators in 2020 were able to get the partial major DNA profile of an unidentified male from the sample obtained from the shorts, according to the lieutenant.
In 2023, investigators received information that Castro or his brother could be “potential suspects” in the case, said Thoemmes, without elaborating. Detectives learned where the brothers were living and traveled to the mainland US to surreptitiously obtain DNA samples from children of the Castros.
A DNA profile obtained from one of the brother’s children cleared him, Thoemmes said, and attention turned to Gideon Castro.
The sample taken from the son of Gideon Castro showed that his father was a match for the DNA found on Dawn’s shorts, according to the lieutenant.
Earlier this month, detectives went to Utah and surreptitiously obtained a DNA sample from Gideon Castro – which tests showed matched the DNA profile taken from the shorts, Thoemmes said. He was arrested at 7:40 a.m. Tuesday at a Utah nursing home.
Chun Oakland, who was a sophomore at McKinley High School when Dawn was killed, said she learned of Castro’s arrest from staff and members of the senior center where she works. She lamented that Dawn was denied a chance to be a wise and nurturing kupuna to younger generations.
“It’s just caring for one another. That should guide us in our life and how we live it,” Chun Oakland said as she helped a senior prepare for an appointment. “I don’t know (Dawn’s) family but I hope for her relatives at least there’s closure.”

Penny Wong’s calls for unity tainted by anti-Semitism ‘politicisation’ row ahead of Holocaust memorial
Penny Wong’s calls for unity tainted by anti-Semitism ‘politicisation’ row ahead of Holocaust memorial
Foreign Minister Penny Wong has called for unity ahead of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp at a time when Australia is grappling to contain a rise in anti-Semitism.
But Australia’s high-level visit to the sombre occasion in Poland has been tainted by a domestic row over the politicisation of anti-Semitism and the Holocaust.
Senator Wong, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus and anti-Semitism envoy Jillian Segal are leading an official delegation to Poland to join survivors and other dignitaries, including King Charles, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, which remembers the six million Jews murdered during World War II.
Auschwitz was central to the Nazi campaign to eradicate Europe’s Jewish population and around 1.1 million people were estimated to have been killed in the camp before it was liberated by Russian soldiers on January 27, 1945.
“We are here to say, never again, never again. To stand with others across the international community and say, never again,” said Senator Wong.
“I would say at this time, we have to stand together — across beliefs, across political difference, across politics — we have to stand against prejudice and hate and antisemitism in all its forms.”
Mr Dreyfus, whose great-grandmother, Ida Ransenberg, was murdered at Auschwitz in 1942, condemned the “shocking” rise in anti-Semitism in Australia and around the world since the ****** terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023.
“We’ve all got to work together, and that’s government, community, every part of the community has to work together to make sure that antisemitism, events of antisemitism, conduct that is antisemitic, violence that’s got an antisemitic association, all of that has to end,” he said.
But his appeal against politicising the Holocaust and anti-Semitism triggered a backlash in Australia over its implied criticism of Opposition Leader Peter Dutton.
“It’s been grotesque … to see the rise in anti-Semitism since October the 7th, but it has been equally grotesque to see attempts being made to politicise either commemoration of the Holocaust or combating antisemitism. We need to get politics out of this,” he said.
Coalition foreign affairs spokesman David Coleman hit out at his response as “a very unfortunate statement.”

Describing the Holocaust as “the worst event in human history,” he told Sky News Australia “should be proud as a nation that we were part of the fight against the evil of Nazism.”
But he called out the Attorney-General for equating the grotesque nature of anti-Semitism with criticism of “Labor’s appalling conduct on these matters.
“It’s just a disgrace. We have seen from the Labor Party a terrible politicisation of these issues. We’ve seen the Labor Party be weak on anti-Semitism,” he said.
Liberal senator Jane Hume also lashed out.

City of Portland to auction foreclosed blighted properties at public *****
City of Portland to auction foreclosed blighted properties at public *****
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The City of Portland is set to host a public ***** of six recently foreclosed “nuisance” properties this Monday.
According to the city, each of the privately-owned properties were foreclosed on after “months to years of unpaid code violation fines and liens.”
Opinion: President Trump, give Portland a break
The properties up for auction are listed below:
The neglect of these properties is more than an eyesore. Kelly Smith, who lives near one of the properties up for auction in Southeast Portland, voiced some health and safety concerns.
“It’s a bit unsanitary. There’s definitely a lot of rodent problems and stuff that certainly originate on that property,” she said. “It would be nice to see something done in this neighborhood. I think it deserves it after all these years.”
These uncared for properties have also brought trouble to their street.
Oregon lawmakers to Providence, strikers: Get a deal
“We’ve had officers swing by trying to catch the culprits. That’s been kind of *******,” said neighbor Presley Smith. “And then, also watching kids playing and stuff and potentially getting injured has not been great. “
Additionally, there have been multiple fires in that house, located at 2826 SE 87th Ave. This made the property prime real estate for a dumping ground.

“I think the dumping started after the second fire,” neighbor Tim Brien recalled. “Usually it was just a bag or two. And then now it’s like people were throwing furniture over there.”
“I actually caught somebody trying to dump a water heater there. But he noticed me watching, so he left,” Kelly added.
When asked what they hope this lot will become, a green space came to mind. But they are open to the possibilities.
“In an ideal world, honestly anything would be better than living across the street from a burned down house,” said Kelly.
This auction is the second since Portland City Council voted last spring to amend the foreclosure process. This shortened the amount of time a property owner could pay off their outstanding fines from one year to three months.
The minimum bids for the properties range from around $143,000 to $641,000.
“We want Portlanders to know that we are committed to addressing these properties,” said Kevin Foster, the City’s foreclosure prevention manager. “Whether it’s encouraging the property owners to resolve outstanding issues or inviting new bidders to consider investment opportunities, this foreclosure ***** is essential to enhancing the quality of life in Portland’s neighborhoods.”
Ten properties originally slated for the auction were taken off the block this week, after outstanding liens, penalties and interest were paid on several of them.
The city adds the owners of the remaining six properties will have until the foreclosure ***** to resolve their outstanding balance and have their property removed from the auction.

Poland warns against restarting Russia gas supplies
Poland warns against restarting Russia gas supplies
Poland’s president has said that gas flows from Russia to Western Europe should never be restored, even if Russia and Ukraine reach a peace deal.
Andrzej Duda told the BBC that the Nord Stream gas pipelines, which have not been used since 2022, “should be dismantled”.
This, he said, would mean the likes of Germany would not be tempted to restore Russian supplies to boost its own struggling economy.
“I can only hope that European leaders will learn lessons from Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and that they will push through a decision to never restore the pumping of gas through this pipeline,” he said.
The Polish president, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, insisted that economic sanctions against Russia were working and European countries should resist pressure from companies to re-establish business links.
The Nord Stream gas pipelines were built by Russia’s gas giant Gazprom and run between Russia and northern Germany.
Nord Stream 1 was shut down in 2022 and Nord Stream 2 was never used, following the invasion of Ukraine. Both were damaged by explosions in 2022.
Gas prices in Europe surged after the shutdown and, in recent months, politicians from Germany’s far right AfD party have suggested the Nord Stream gas pipes should resume operations.
Germany will hold federal elections at the end of February.
“I believe the Nord Stream pipelines should be dismantled”, Duda said. “This pipeline causes a very big threat to Ukraine, to Poland, to Slovakia but also to other Central European countries.”
He added: “It is a threat from the point of view of energy, from the point of view of the military but also it is a huge economic threat because it means a domination of Russia over Europe in the economic sense.”
On the prospect of a deal between Ukraine and Russia now that US President Donald Trump has taken office, Duda insisted that no peace talks could take place without the participation of Ukraine.
“I’m saying that in my capacity as president of the Republic of Poland, as a neighbour to Ukraine and also as president of a country who has had very hard historic experiences itself,” he said.
“I’m speaking here and referring to World War Two and to Yalta where we were not included in those talks, where certain agreements were made beyond our heads and then we found ourselves behind the Iron Curtain, where, for almost 50 years, we were part of the Soviet sphere of influence,” he said.
Trump had previously said he would negotiate a settlement to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine launched in February 2022 in 24 hours – he has since acknowledged it could take some time.
Duda said it would be “a violation of international law” for Russia to be allowed to hold on to territory it has occupied in Ukraine.
President Vladimir Putin has said he is prepared to negotiate an end to the war, which first began in 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea, but Ukraine would have to accept the reality of Russian territorial gains, which are currently about 20% of its land.
Putin also refuses to accept Ukraine joining Nato, the military alliance of Western countries.
Duda said: “The international community cannot agree, and it is unacceptable that Russia would take certain territories of Ukraine and keep them by force. This is unacceptable.
“We must not let Russia win this war.”
Duda said Trump “understands the region” and US involvement would be key.
“President Donald Trump as the leader of the most powerful country within Nato, as the leader of the most powerful economy will be of key importance.” said Duda.
“I am waiting peacefully for the first steps which will be taken by Donald Trump.”

Australia not afraid to make changes on the fly as Travis Head hints at ‘flexible’ batting order
Australia not afraid to make changes on the fly as Travis Head hints at ‘flexible’ batting order
Australia will consider taking the drastic step of changing its batting order mid-Test match to combat its selection dilemma at the top for the Sri Lanka series.
Travis Head and Sam Konstas arrived in Galle seemingly locked in a battle to partner veteran opener Usman Khawaja for the first of two matches beginning on January 29.
Teenage swashbuckler Konstas is the incumbent and helped seal Australia’s first series win over India in a decade with valuable contributions across his first two Test matches.
Australia’s middle-order aggressor on home soil, Head averaged 55.75 runs as David Warner’s injury replacement during the final two and a half Tests on the last subcontinent to India in 2023.
“I don’t know where I’m going to bat at this stage,” Head said ahead of Monday’s main training session for the first Test.
“We’ll see how that wicket plays out over the next couple of days.”
But Head revealed Australia had been discussing the prospect of shifting its batting order mid-game if pitch conditions called for flexibility.

Questions remain as to how much spin will be on offer from day one in the Test matches, with the pitch playing very differently in Galle across Australia’s last two visits in 2022 and 2016.
South *********** veteran Head is more experienced in Asia than Konstas, who is embarking on his first subcontinent Test tour, but has not always been able to make the best of turning wickets.
Head said when it came to the opener debate, Australia may be able to have its cake and eat it too.
“It’s been a topic of conversation for the last little bit in this team on whether the *********** first innings, second innings, why doesn’t the order change?” Head said.
“Why can’t we be flexible? What moves? How can we be brave?
“That hasn’t played out as such yet. Is this the tour to do it? We’ll wait and see.”
The current *********** team has often changed its batting order mid-game to deploy a nightwatchman, usually Nathan Lyon, but a premeditated mid-game switch would be unprecedented.
But in the era of Konstas reverse-ramp shots and booming support for Test cricket, Head feels the time is ripe for change.
“The game is evolving, so why not continue to see where we can make jumps and leaps and where can we get an advantage?” he said.
“If that’s using people in different positions, it’s not traditionally done a hell of a lot … (but) this team’s experienced enough and in a great position where players will be open to that if needed to be.”
Head averaged 7.7 runs at his usual No.5 spot across Australia’s last visit to Sri Lanka – the worst figures for any bilateral series of his 54-match Test career.

His subcontinent form was so dire that Head found himself dropped for the start of the 2023 India series, despite shining against the West Indies and South Africa in the previous home summer.
Head returns to Sri Lanka ready to play with his trademark positive intent regardless of his position in the order, admitting the last tour to Sri Lanka was one to forget.
“I wasn’t pleased with the way that tour went,” he said.
“I did go through a bit of a transition here and in Pakistan last time, tried to play a bit more traditionally.
“That (2023) Indian series was one which could have gone one way or the other. I don’t play well and I probably never see a subcontinent tour again.
“Or I go out there and do what I’ve been doing the last couple of years and go out there a little bit more relaxed.
“So I’ll draw on that.
“I feel comfortable wherever I need to be to win the Test. I ain’t bothered where I bat anymore. I haven’t been for a while.”

But speculations are rumors are doing their job pretty well, providing regular sneak peeks day in and day out.

And now the meme world has also joined this flurry. The whole internet is right now beaming with GTA 6 memes. If there is any strange thing happening right now, then the “….before GTA 6” posts are quite evident these days. Similarly, there is another hilarious meme regarding the game that is surfacing on the internet right now, seeing which even the Rockstar co-founder might become concerned.

There is a meme regarding the current US president Donald Trump giving an executive order to Rockstar Games to release the highly anticipated title that has taken all over the internet.
BREAKING: President Trump targets Rockstar Games in executive order related to GTAVI pic.twitter.com/jdpYsos2uU
— Dirty_Worka (@Dirty_Worka) January 24, 2025
In this video, a White House employee is seen giving some documents to Trump to sign them off, saying, “And lastly Sir, we have an executive order requiring Rockstar Games to release GTA 6 in 2025 and drop a second trailer next week.” In reply, the president said, “That’s a big one huh? A lot of people are waiting for this rollout for years, for decades, wherein everything will be revealed.”
The meme went viral overnight, gathering over 4.7 million views at the time of writing this article, with 57k likes and 1.2k comments on Twitter. Most comments were about people believing this to be true, but sadly nothing like this actually happened. And as Rockstar Games has taken its fans for granted, something like this was quite evident.
This video was taken from a clip that was actually released by ABC News. in which Trump was seen signing a series of legislation. Someone took that clip and added some AI voice lines of Trump and that White House employee.
That is why Dan Houser never wanted to release GTA 6 under the tenure of Donald Trump

GTA 6 was never supposed to be released under Donald Trump’s presidency, according to Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser. Houser may have to take back his statements, though, as Trump was elected president of the United States in 2024 yet again.
During Trump’s previous term as president in 2018, Houser made the comment about the current president. At the time, GTA 6 was still being developed, and the company was certain that the game would be released after Trump’s tenure was over. However, the game may now be released following Trump’s re-election. In 2018, Houser stated the following to GQ Magazine:
It’s really unclear what we would even do with it, let alone how upset people would get with whatever we did. Both intense liberal progression and intense conservatism are both very militant and very angry. It is scary but it’s also strange, and yet both of them seem occasionally to veer towards the absurd. It’s hard to satirise for those reasons. Some of the stuff you see is straightforwardly beyond satire. It would be out of date within two minutes, everything is changing so fast.
However, Houser’s concern was legitimate. Project 2025 is the more valid cause for concern. Even though Trump has disassociated himself from Project 2025, the contentious initiative from the Heritage Foundation contains language that implies video game—and really, all media—censorship is a possibility.
As noted by Game Developer, there is legitimate concern that Project 2025 may have on the gaming industry. It is not surprising that some fans have gone so far as to suggest that if Project 2025’s initiatives were to become law, the game might become a target, given the extreme violence and ******* content commonly found in the Grand Theft Auto series.
However, Houser can be rest assured that Trump hasn’t made any step regarding GTA 6 so far. But the question is, how long?

Ukrainian Navy intercepts Russian Kh-59 missile with US’ ship-mounted VAMPIRE SAM
Ukrainian Navy intercepts Russian Kh-59 missile with US’ ship-mounted VAMPIRE SAM
The Ukrainian Navy’s official Telegram channel reported that a Sukhoi Su-57 multirole fighter launched a Kh-59 cruise missile at the port, which was intercepted by a surface-to-air missile fired from a patrol boat.
The Ukrainian Navy used a ship-mounted VAMPIRE SAM to intercept and destroy the Kh-59 cruise missile launched at a commercial seaport on the ****** Sea.
Open-source expert links VAMPIRE to successful missile interception
On January 24, Russia launched a major missile and drone attack on multiple Ukrainian regions, including Kyiv, using over 60 aerial weapons. One target was the Pivdennyi port, a key hub for exporting grain and essential goods, making it a frequent target of Russian attacks, the Kyiv Post reported.
Over the past year, the Kh-59 missile has become a frequent choice for Russian forces, with its deployment on the Su-57 Felon regularly highlighted by various observers.
The open-source military intelligence commentator Osinttechnical determined that the missile system used was the L3 Harris “Vehicle-Agnostic Modular Palletized ISR Rocket Equipment” (VAMPIRE) system, which deployed the laser-guided 70mm advanced precision kill weapons system (APKWS) missile.
The VAMPIRE system is a modular, portable kit that can be mounted on any vehicle with a cargo bed, whether military or civilian. Installation is user-friendly, allowing a two-person team to complete it in about two hours using standard tools.
Originally designed as ground-based, vehicle-mounted equipment, the VAMPIRE system sparked discussions in early 2024 about its potential integration with naval platforms and unmanned surface vessels (USVs), like the Magura V5 or Sea Baby drones.
Ukraine adapts patrol boat into mobile anti-missile platform
In practice, VAMPIRE has been deployed on various platforms, ranging from pickup trucks like the Toyota Tacoma to more heavily armored vehicles such as the up-armored HMMWV, demonstrating its versatile “agnostic” design.
This incident indicates that Ukraine has adapted at least one patrol boat, likely a “Small Armored Artillery Boat” (SAB), into a mobile anti-missile platform. This adaptation may help counter the threat posed by missiles like the Kh-59, which are designed to evade detection.
During nighttime or low-visibility conditions over water, the Kh-59 flies at a very low altitude of about 7 meters (23 feet) to avoid radar detection. It uses a combination of inertial navigation and a TV or electro-optical seeker for terminal guidance to its target.
Additionally, the operation’s success also highlights the coordinated efforts between naval and possibly air defense units, ensuring a comprehensive response to aerial threats.
Furthermore, Ukraine’s APKWS missile, a modified air-to-surface missile (ASM), employs the WESCAM MX-10 combined thermal imaging sensor and laser designator to track the cruise missile. The SAM’s proximity fuse then detonates near the target, disabling or destroying the incoming Kh-59 missile.
This advanced targeting system enhances the missile’s effectiveness, particularly in challenging conditions like low visibility or nighttime operations, and can be of great help for Ukraine’s defense efforts against missile threats.
