Rapid Response Network confirms ICE activity in San Jose Rapid Response Network confirms ICE activity in San Jose The Brief Agents with ICE were reportedly carrying out operations in San Jose outside a home and shopping area Local officials have responded to these reports SAN JOSE, Calif. – Agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were reportedly spotted in San Jose Sunday, according to a tip received by the Rapid Response Network of Santa Clara County‘s hotline. The group said they received a tip about agents spotted outside a residence on South White Road and Tully Road in San Jose and agents behind a Target on King and Story Roads. Rapid Response Network said their team responded and tracked the officers from the home on South White Road. Officials with the organization said they didn’t see anyone being detained based on the agents’ actions and what their workers present heard. Still, they said instead it appeared that the ICE agents were conducting operations enforcing deportation orders targeting specific people. “We urge our community to stay safe and remain vigilant,” Rapid Response Network said. “Your safety is our priority…Our responders are ready to support and protect our community.” As of 3:30 p.m., ICE agents were reportedly no longer in the area of King and Story Roads, according to the group. The San Jose Police Department said they had no information to add about ICE’s presence in the city. Additionally, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said they are aware of ICE activity in the area, saying in part, “Our police department was notified today that ICE is carrying out an operation in San Jose…I sincerely hope that ICE remains focused on enforcement actions related to violent and serious criminals harming our city, not neighbors who are contributing and law-abiding members of our community.” The mayor’s office said the police department does not assist or participate in ICE operations whatsoever. KTVU contacted ICE but did not hear back in time of publication. What you can do For more information and assistance, residents can call the Rapid Response Network hotline at (408) 290-1144. Radio 2 breakfast presenter ‘overwhelmed’ on his first show Radio 2 breakfast presenter ‘overwhelmed’ on his first show Scott Mills welcomed listeners to his first BBC Radio 2 breakfast show on Monday, telling listeners it was “all a bit overwhelming”. The broadcaster has taken over the prestigious slot from Zoe Ball, who stood down from last month after six years of hosting. “As a radio presenter, and radio fan all my life, I’m still finding it quite hard to process that this is happening if I’m honest,” Mills told listeners in his opening link. He joked that everyone had been guessing what his first song would be, as he formally opened the show by introducing Rock DJ by Robbie Williams. “Here we go then, this is the Scott Mills breakfast show on BBC Radio 2, and I can’t believe I’m finally saying those words,” he said. The show’s other on-air voices include travel reader Ellie Brennan, while Tina Daheley, who previously appeared on BBC breakfast radio shows hosted by Zoe Ball, Chris Moyles, Nick Grimshaw and Trevor Nelson, is the newsreader. “If I think too much about the previous occupiers of this show, it becomes mind-blowing to me, for a kid who wanted to be on the radio but wasn’t sure he had the self-confidence to be able to actually do it,” Mills reflected. “The aim here is to make you smile, bring up your mood, to make you shoulder and head dance in the car, or in bed, or in the shower or in the kitchen, and to keep your spirits up on mornings where maybe you don’t feel so great.” Mills joined Radio 2’s weekday schedule in 2022, replacing Steve Wright as the host of the afternoon slot. Prior to that, he worked on Radio 1 for nearly three decades and also hosted a weekend show on 5 Live. The breakfast show is seen as the most prestigious flagship programme in a radio station’s schedule. However, in Radio 2’s case, it is not currently the most listened to programme on the schedule. That accolade is held by the mid-morning show, currently hosted by Vernon Kay, who took over from Ken Bruce in 2023. Kay and Mills are two of several DJs who have gravitated to the station from Radio 1 as bosses have freshened up the schedule. Radio 2’s weekday schedule now also features Nelson, Sara Cox and Jo Whiley, resembling the Radio 1 schedule of the noughties. But not all former Radio 1 DJs automatically move to Radio 2. Moyles now hosts breakfast on Radio X, while Grimshaw recently took over the BBC Radio 6 Music breakfast show. Windies win 2nd Test to split series in Pakistan Windies win 2nd Test to split series in Pakistan The West Indies spun out Pakistan for 133 to record an emphatic 120-run win inside three days in the second Test in Multan, to split the two-match series 1-1. Pakistan, who needed a further 178 runs for an improbable win, fell quickly to Jomel Warrican’s left-arm spin on day three as the West Indies gained their first Test win in Pakistan in more than 34 years. Warrican claimed 5-27 to finish the series with a series-leading 19 wickets and pushed Pakistan to the bottom of the World Test Championship table as both teams ended their two-year campaigns. Resuming at 4-76 on Monday, Pakistan lost both overnight batters without adding to the total, as Kevin Sinclair (3-61) had Saud Shakeel caught in the slips off the third ball of the morning and Warrican clean bowled nightwatchman Kashif Ali in the next over. Mohammad Rizwan (25) and Salman Ali Agha (15) added 39 before both fell to Warrican. Salman had already survived a close stumping chance off Warrican but was finally deceived by a looping delivery and was out lbw, while Rizwan couldn’t read Warrican’s brilliant delivery that spun back into him and knocked back the stumps. The spinner then sealed a famous win by clean bowling Sajid Khan. It was a remarkable turnaround for the West Indies, who lost the first Test by 127 runs at the same venue and were 7-38 on day one of the second match before their tailenders lifted them to 163 all out for a slender first innings lead of nine runs. Captain Kraigg Brathwaite’s half century in the second innings led West Indies to post 244 for an overall lead of 253 before Pakistan’s batters fell into their own trap of a turning pitch against the tourists’ spinners. The West Indies finished eighth on the WTC table and Pakistan was at No. 9 with Australia and South Africa already qualifying for the final at Lord’s in June. Monthly bin collection plan is mooted by council Monthly bin collection plan is mooted by council Bristol could become the first council in England to collect ****** waste bins once every three or four weeks, under new plans. The city council, run by the Green Party, already has the highest recycling rate among “core cities” in England, with 45% of household waste being recycled. Bristol City Council has launched a public consultation on the potential changes, which will run until 10 March. The authority’s deputy leader, Heather Mack, said the move would reduce the cost and “the impact on the environment”, but opposition councillors said there were increasing complaints about the existing service which should be sorted first. Switching to a three-weekly ****** bin collection will save the council £1.3m a year, while a four-weekly collection would save £2.3m. The move has been proposed to encourage more recycling of food waste. Bristol City Council said around 50% of households don’t recycle food waste, and a quarter of most ****** bin rubbish is food which could be recycled. Around £700 worth of food is thrown away every year per house, the council added. Food waste is sent to an anaerobic digestion plant, and converted into energy by burning the methane waste that comes from it, with the by-product being used for farm fertiliser. The council is also facing increasing costs of treating waste, which has increased by £4m in the last five years. According to Bristol City Council, 26% of an average bin consists of food waste [Bristol Waste] Ms Mack said: “There’s due to be a tax on the residual waste we send to be processed, for the carbon in that. “So we really need to consider how much we’re sending and where else could it go. “We would also offer larger bins for larger households, and an extra collection for people with sanitary products or nappies, so we don’t want people to unduly struggle with this,” she added. Bristol Waste encourages residents to recycle food waste in the small brown bins [Bristol Waste] The plans have been criticised by opposition parties at City Hall. Tom Renhard, leader of the Labour group, said: “There needs to be a focus on sorting out the existing service. “I’m getting an increasing number of complaints from local residents across the city that recycling isn’t being collected and ****** bins aren’t being collected on [the current] two-weekly basis. “Some of my residents haven’t had a recycling collection this side of Christmas. “You’re also starting to see that if residents’ recycling isn’t getting collected and it’s piling up, they’re going to put it in the bin, which isn’t going to help recycling rates.” Follow BBC Bristol on Facebook, X and Instagram. Bash-prone bridge to get camera system fitted Bash-prone bridge to get camera system fitted One of the most bashed bridges in the country is to be fitted with a camera monitoring system this spring. The two-metre-high (6ft 6in) bridge at Stonea – between Chatteris and March in Cambridgeshire – carries the main Ely to Peterborough railway line. Last year it was named joint second most-bashed bridge in Britain by Network Rail with 17 official strikes, although locals claimed the figure could be double because of unreported collisions. Cambridgeshire County Council said it was working with Network Rail and a rail consultation firm to install cameras to monitor the site 24 hours a day. Locals said there were many unreported incidents at the underpass and that something had to be done [James Fuller] James Fuller, 32, has lived on the B1098 Stonea Road for three years. He said that as well as being too low, the Stonea underpass is not wide enough for two vehicles to pass each other, despite a 50mph speed limit. “I think it is a waste of time, energy and money to be quite honest,” he said. “The cameras will be able to see what the traffic is doing, but they are not going to work out why drivers are repeatedly getting into trouble here.” Mr Fuller said he had spoken to many motorists who did not realise they could use the left fork, believing it to lead to a private track [James Fuller] “The other day I saw a police van that stopped before going through the underpass,” Mr Fuller added. “A policeman had to get out of the passenger seat and walk the vehicle through, so if the police don’t know the size of their van, what chance have the public got?” Cambridgeshire Police responded that “there are no set rules or answers to that question”. James Fuller said he felt signage could be better in the area and that the phrase “large vehicle” was a grey area [James Fuller] Joanna Sidgwick, 57, has lived in Stonea all her life and said she would not like to see the underpass close. “When the underpass shut for bridge repairs a few years back the traffic was horrendous, it was stacked down the road for hundreds of metres,” she said. “You’d see lorry drivers getting out of their cabs to ******** on the side of the road, the noise, the fumes it was awful. “I requested the cameras last year, they will be a real benefit.” Joanna Sidgwick, 57, welcomed the cameras and said dangerous drivers would be held to account [Joanna Sidgwick] Cambridgeshire County Council said the new cameras would monitor the location and collect data, such as general traffic information and near misses. “The cameras will provide a live video feed and 24/7 recordings,” it said. It added: “There have been no injury collisions in this location since a number of road safety improvements were made in the autumn of 2023.” The council is working with Network Rail to try to reduce the number of bridge strikes which continue to occur. The total cost of these works is, as yet, unknown. Follow Cambridgeshire news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X. I was at the game and I would pay a huge amount of money to watch that. He was incredible; passing range, fitness, endeavour, defensive work as well as attacking work. He hit the bar. I thought he was excellent. Player of the weekend by a country mile. Josko Gvardiol (Manchester City): I think this guy’s got an unbelievable ceiling. He’s only going to get better and better as the games carry on, and as he gets more and more confident, and City get more on it. I don’t think City go on to win against Chelsea if they don’t score before half-time – I think Chelsea regroup and go again. Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Lisandro Martinez (Manchester United) and Riccardo Calafiori (Arsenal): They’ve all been solid, just proper defenders and what I’m finding is these guys are stepping up more and more. Ubisoft’s Alleged Dirty Trick to Save Assassin’s Creed Shadows From Negative PR is Awful Ubisoft’s Alleged Dirty Trick to Save Assassin’s Creed Shadows From Negative PR is Awful Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to release on March 20th and Ubisoft can’t seem to avoid controversies lately as the newest one has blown up in the company’s face. The final preview for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed title just started to get reviews from major gaming outlets and one YouTuber seems to have gotten on the studio’s bad side. We’re really not excited to see what the studio does with this. | Image Credit: Ubisoft Japanese content creator Shohei Kondo’s videos criticizing the game have been repeatedly removed from YouTube, with Ubisoft accused of labeling the content as “hate speech.” According to people who watched the video, it was anything but, so what is the studio cooking up now? Assassin’s Creed Shadows is going to be a big deal, but maybe in the worst ways It’s been a steady road downhill. | Image Credit: Ubisoft Ubisoft has a lot riding on Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The company had one of the worst years possible in 2024 with a number of financial and critical failures. Anticipated and hyped titles like Skull and Bones, and Star Wars Outlaws were underwhelming, to say the least, and even ones with potential like XDefiant have been shut down. The removed video is back up. Thank you to everyone who encouraged and supported me. The video has been removed 12 times (so far)! I contacted YouTube and also changed the title. Hopefully, it stays up this time! I spent all day fighting to get it back. pic.twitter.com/6IG8l5zagc — Shohei Kondo (@shoheikondo) January 26, 2025 The studio’s reputation has gotten even worse delays, poorly received releases, and accusations of unoriginal game design. With over 20,000 employees across 45 studios worldwide, we understandably have high expectations from the studio. So it’s not a light statement to say that how well this Assassin’s Creed game is received will be a big part of Ubisoft’s future. In typical Ubisoft fashion though, the game’s reception has already been complicated by accusations of historical inaccuracy and “woke” storytelling. The latest drama with YouTuber Shohei Kondo is not going to help at all either. Kondo alleges that his videos criticizing Shadows have been removed from YouTube multiple times, each time citing “hate speech” despite their constructive tone. Youtuber and content creator SHOHEI KONDO Gets his assassins creed shadows videos REMOVED for hate speech from YouTube. They are actively trying to suppress real Japanese voices from speaking out against Ubisoft, even when its done in a constructive way like Shohei did.… pic.twitter.com/jGAwN1ZZNE — Hypnotic (@RealHypnotic1) January 26, 2025 Thank you for sharing! The video is removed 7 times! Every time the video gets back, it gets removed again and again! I’m contacting YouTube’s internal team — Shohei Kondo (@shoheikondo) January 26, 2025 “The video is removed 7 times! Every time the video gets back, it gets removed again and again!” Kondo shared this on social media. Unsurprisingly, the community has rallied behind him in calling out the studio. “They are actively trying to suppress real Japanese voices,” one person commented. Then there’s the other problems already brought up Not even a perfect game could save the studio at this point. | Image Credit: Ubisoft The studio has been looking for trouble since the start with AC Shadows. The biggest problem that fans had at the start was the decision to use Yasuke, a ****** samurai as one of the two protagonists of the game. While Yasuke was a real person, the historical accuracy of the studio’s portrayal has been questioned multiple times. The biggest problem that fans have had is that Ubisoft isn’t focused on cultural authenticity in its portrayal of feudal Japan. Some Japanese fans have rightfully pointed out that Assassin’s Creed Shadows reduces their culture to a checklist of marketable elements rather than offering a genuine exploration of history and heritage. You’d be hard-pressed to find a good reason for these moves. March 20th is coming quickly and it seems like the entire world wants Ubisoft to fail. The studio can either take these real criticisms seriously or it can double down and go down the path of fading to obscurity. Will you be buying or playing AC Shadows when it comes out? Vintage festival cancelled due to ‘rising costs’ Vintage festival cancelled due to ‘rising costs’ Yahoo is using AI to generate takeaways from this article. This means the info may not always match what’s in the article. Reporting mistakes helps us improve the experience.Generate Key Takeaways This year’s Morecambe vintage festival has been cancelled due to “rising costs”, it has been announced. Organisers of the event, which has been running for 11 years, said the 2025 edition of Vintage by the Sea had become “unsustainable” due to “pressure to raise the funds needed to match rising costs”. The free and not-for-profit annual event, which was co-created by fashion designer Wayne Hemingway, has reportedly attracted more than 40,000 visitors to the Lancashire seaside resort each year. “We hope this is not the end of the festival forever and that the right levels of resources and funding can be secured in the future,” organisers added. Fashion designer Wayne Hemingway has previously spoken of his pride at being involved with the festival in his hometown [Vintage by the Sea] They said the event had been set up by Deco Publique and Hemingway Design to “celebrate culture, creativity, fashion and design” while also generating more than £17m for the local economy. Thanking everyone who had ever supported the festival, the organisers said it would return “if and when the time is right”. They explained that the festival’s return following the Covid-19 pandemic “highlighted the extent of cost increases and the infrastructure needs of organising an event of this scale”. The event was “an incredible success story for Morecambe” and had been the setting for “countless memorable moments from marriage proposals to visitors choosing to relocate to Morecambe”, they added. Calls for law change after two teens die in ****** Calls for law change after two teens die in ****** Adam Laver BBC News, Yorkshire Submitted Joe Walsh died on 20 October 2023 after crashing his car A mother whose son died in a ****** while giving five friends a lift home from a pub is calling for a change in the law for inexperienced drivers. Joe Walsh, 19, and Toby Barraclough, 18, were both killed when the car Joe was driving hit a stone wall in Shelf, near Halifax, after the group had been drinking at the nearby Shoulder of Mutton in October 2023. An inquest into their deaths at Bradford Coroner’s Court last month heard that Joe was believed to have drunk four or five pints of lager and had taken ********. Both senior coroner Martin Fleming and Joe’s mother Lisa Wright want the Department for Transport to restrict the number of passengers new drivers can carry. Apprentice bricklayer Joe had only passed his test five months before the collision. “My heart just broke,” Ms Wright said at her home in Queensbury, Bradford, describing the moment she found out about the ******. “My whole world fell apart.” Referring to “graduated” licensing for newly qualified drivers, she said: “I think only good can come out of it. “If it saves lives, it’s a good thing, isn’t it?” Lisa Wright (right) with her childhood friend Melanie Meleshko Melanie Meleshko, whose son Charlie was one of the passengers who survived the ******, said: “They just all piled in the car thinking that it was OK, they were only driving five minutes down the road. “They just didn’t think about the consequences at that point. “If they hadn’t been allowed to get in the car then things would have been different.” Submitted Toby Barraclough died a few weeks after ****** Mr Fleming issued a Prevention of Future Deaths report after the inquests and wrote: “Currently there are no legal restrictions upon the licences of young or newly qualified drivers. “Young drivers may be more likely to be involved in a collision. I am concerned that there will be further tragic deaths.” The Department for Transport said it does not have any plans to change the system. A spokesperson said: “Every death on our roads is a tragedy and our thoughts remain with the families of everyone who has lost a loved one in this way. “Whilst we are not considering Graduated Driving Licences, we absolutely recognise that young people are disproportionately victims of tragic incidents on our roads, and we are considering other measures to tackle this problem and protect young drivers.” In countries where graduated licences exist, such as Australia, Germany and New Zealand, there are restrictions on carrying passengers at night, zero alcohol limits and probationary periods. The other Perth Zoo pachyderm — bull elephant Putra Mas — will move later this year. “The trip has been meticulously planned. We’ve mapped out the route that we’re taking, but it should take just over two days,” Perth Zoo life sciences director John Lemon said. “It’s a bittersweet moment to know that she’s finally going to her forever home, but she’ll no longer be at Perth Zoo, so her ******** is the priority to get her with other elephants is a priority, and that’s our main goal.” In SA, Permai will be joined by Burma, an elephant from Auckland Zoo who recently moved to Monarto, as well as two more females from Taronga Zoo in Sydney. ******** AI startup DeepSeek overtakes ChatGPT on Apple App Store ******** AI startup DeepSeek overtakes ChatGPT on Apple App Store BEIJING (Reuters) – ******** startup DeepSeek’s AI Assistant on Monday overtook rival ChatGPT to become the top-rated free application available on Apple’s App Store in the United States. Powered by the DeepSeek-V3 model, which its creators say “tops the leaderboard among open-source models and rivals the most advanced closed-source models globally”, the artificial intelligence application has surged in popularity among U.S. users since it was released on Jan. 10, according to app data research firm Sensor Tower. The milestone highlights how DeepSeek has left a deep impression on Silicon Valley, upending widely held views about U.S. primacy in AI and the effectiveness of Washington’s export controls targeting China’s advanced chip and AI capabilities. AI models from ChatGPT to DeepSeek require advanced chips to power their training. The Biden administration has since 2021 widened the scope of bans designed to stop these chips from being exported to China and used to train ******** firms’ AI models. However, DeepSeek researchers wrote in a paper last month that the DeepSeek-V3 used Nvidia’s H800 chips for training, spending less than $6 million. Although this detail has since been disputed, the claim that the chips used were less powerful than the most advanced Nvidia products Washington has sought to keep out of China, as well as the relatively cheap training costs, has prompted U.S. tech executives to question the effectiveness of tech export controls. Little is known about the company behind DeepSeek, a small Hangzhou-based startup founded in 2023, when search engine giant Baidu released the first ******** AI large-language model. Since then, dozens of ******** tech companies large and small have released their own AI models, but DeepSeek is the first to be praised by the U.S. tech industry as matching or even surpassing the performance of cutting-edge U.S. models. Fink, Dimon, Largarde and more on what’s next for markets

Fink, Dimon, Largarde and more on what’s next for markets Fink, Dimon, Largarde and more on what’s next for markets A general view of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting as it convenes under the theme of ‘Collaboration for the Intelligent Age’ in Davos, Switzerland on January 20, 2025. Anadolu | Anadolu | Getty Images U.S. President Donald Trump has only been in office for a couple of days, but his impact on markets has already been significant. The S&P 500 notched another record close on Thursday, after the White House leader called for lower interest rates and cheaper oil prices in an address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Investors have also been betting on potential tax cuts and deregulation under the new president, sending stocks higher. Not everyone is bullish looking ahead, however, with some — such as JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon — suggesting markets could be overpriced. After a week of interviews with business leaders, lawmakers and investors in the Swiss ski resort, here’s what top industry names told CNBC: Nicolai Tangen, CEO, Norges Bank Investment Management “I don’t think you should give any advice to the U.S., but if you look at the risk to financial markets, I think inflation is for sure one, all driven by tariffs,” Tangen said Tuesday. “Geopolitical tensions generally are negative for financial markets and for financial returns.” Tangen added that “purely financially,” Trump’s arrival was going to be “very positive” for a lot of U.S. companies. Khaldoon al-Mubarak, CEO, Mubadala “Continuing on the trends we’ve seen in 2024 being a positive year in most markets … I see that continuing in 2025, I see a continuation of strong tailwinds in the in the core markets, the U.S., Asia, particularly the growth driven markets in Asia,” al-Mubarak told CNBC’s Dan Murphy Monday. “I see a continuation of good tailwinds in technology and healthcare and financial services, life sciences,” he added. “So I would say, maybe almost the same words I used last year: cautiously optimistic. When I look at 2025, it’s going to be an exciting year.” Larry Fink, CEO and chairman, BlackRock “I’m cautiously optimistic — that being said I have scenarios where it could be pretty bad,” Fink told CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin. “I believe if we were to unlock all this private capital we’re going to have enormous growth, [but], at the same time, some of this is going to unlock new inflationary pressures,” he explained. “And I do believe that’s the risk that is not factored into the market.” Christian Sinding, CEO, EQT Sinding, CEO of Swedish private equity firm EQT, told CNBC’s Karen Tso and Steve Sedgwick on the ground that the market for M&A and big business deals was “continuing to improve.” “We had a record year in 2024 we did over $20 billion of investments,” he said. “We did more than $10 billion of exits, and that’s kind of building up to 2025, [when] I think a lot of the market participants are now ready to transact, whether it’s private equity or family offices or strategic buyers. And, of course, if you look at the global capital markets, the IPO market is wide open. The credit markets are strong, so we’re fairly positive looking into the next year.” Ted Pick, CEO, Morgan Stanley Pick said he believed corporate earnings could lift growth in markets over the next 12 to 24 months as they “continue to be strong.” “That is kind of the indicator … How many companies right now are really talking about recession, how many are talking about inflation? I feel like the earnings pull through looks pretty sanguine,” he said. “More importantly, I know we like to look at the index, but the index is dominated by half a dozen technology companies — which, by the way are all doing great — but if you look at the deregulation possibilities in the energy sector, in the financial services sector, those sectors are still in multiples that aren’t that expensive,” Pick added. “If you’re an investor and you think about allocating over the next 12 to 18 months, sure there could be a drawdown at the index level, but [do] you really want to be thinking about where do I have sector exposure?” Jamie Dimon, CEO, JPMorgan Chase Dimon said he thinks U.S. asset prices are “kind of inflated” at their current levels. “By any measure, they are in the top 10% or 15%,” Dimon told Andrew Ross Sorkin on Wednesday, referring to U.S. stock markets. “They’re elevated and you need fairly good outcomes to justify those prices. “We’re all hoping for that, and having pro-growth strategies helps make that happen, but there are negatives out there and they can tend to surprise you,” he added. David Solomon, CEO, Goldman Sachs Solomon said markets were in risk-on mode and that there was a sense of optimism in equities both because of the new U.S. administration and because of advances in technology. Solomon also told Andrew Ross Sorkin that he was noticing a focus on growth, in the U.S., as well as in his conversations with European clients at Davos. “I think people are optimistic, and it’s not going to be a smooth, perfect path, but people are optimistic that we are going to run a more growth-prone agenda. We’re going to free up some investment, we’re going to unlock the private sector a little but more, and that’s got to be constructive,” he said. “It’s hard to dispute the fact that equity multiples are high … I think the equity markets exhibit a sense of optimism at the moment, but they also exhibit a sense of optimism around growth and technology, in particular this AI wave. Of course it’s not going to be a straight line, but some of the technology we’re seeing, the opportunities for that technology to improve productivity meaningfully are extraordinary.” Christine Lagarde, President, European Central Bank Lagarde told Karen Tso that there was divergence in monetary policy between the euro area and the U.S. due to a “different economic setting.” She also said that she was not “overly concerned” about the risk that inflation abroad will be imported into Europe, adding that she expected the ECB will continue to gradually lower interest rates as the price growth rate moves toward target. “We are certainly interested to see the U.S. grow, because growth in the U.S. has always been a favorable factor for the rest of the world,” Lagarde said. Ray Dalio, Founder, Bridgewater Bridgewater founder Ray Dalio told CNBC that price-earnings ratios were high in U.S. markets, but that there could be further scope to climb in artificial intelligence beneficiaries. “We have gone pretty far already …I think it’s led by the sectors that are great sectors, the disruptors, AI and so on.” “I don’t think it’s been carried down to the applications of AI, to the uses of AI … the applications of AI are under-discounted I think.” Brian Moynihan, CEO, Bank of America Moynihan told Andrew Ross Sorkin on Tuesday he thought U.S. markets had room to climb in 2025, and that the key concern for business and financial services would be regulatory policy, rather than inflation. “Our research team thinks there’s room to go this year, they predict the market to go up. Not as much as last year, and the unusual thing is you had a couple years in a row of very strong growth, but that was coming off a couple years of very unusual times,” he said. Moynihan added, “I believe that if you look at the key thing for businesses generally, including financial services and the banking businesses, it’s the regulation question.” Sergio Ermotti, CEO, UBS Tariffs proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump could prevent disinflation and keep interest rates higher, the banking chief told Andrew Ross Sorkin on Tuesday. “Inflation is much more sticky than we have been saying,” Ermotti said. “Tariffs will probably not really help inflation to come down. And therefore I don’t see [interest] rates coming down as fast as people believe,” he said. C. S. Venkatakrishnan, CEO, Barclays Venkatakrishnan, whose British bank makes around 40% of its revenue in the U.S., said he was “optimistic” about U.S. deal activity this year. “I think there are two things driving it. One is interest rates have reached a relatively stable level. Our own economists are calling for maybe one rate cut in the U.S. over the next year,” he told Andrew Ross Sorkin. “They’re still high, but they’re stable, so you can at least plan better, because you don’t have the volatility in rates. The second is with the change in [U.S.] administration, it should be easier for mergers to take place.” Venkatakrishnan added that he expected President Trump to relax regulation, which would be “generally good for business sentiment and good for business opportunity.” Rachel Reeves, *** Finance Minister The U.K. needs to attract more oversees investment to boost economic growth, Reeves told CNBC. “My message to U.S. investors and global investors too is: Britain is open for business, we want your investment.” She also discussed Trump’s global tariff threats. “I do understand that President Trump is concerned about countries that are running large and persistent surpluses on the trade balance with the U.S. That’s not the case for the U.K.,” Reeves said. “We are not part of the problem here. So we, the U.K., increased trade with President Trump last time he was in office.” Source link #Fink #Dimon #Largarde #whats #markets Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content] -

Trump’s Colombia face-off is warning for all leaders Trump’s Colombia face-off is warning for all leaders Ione wells South America correspondent EPA Less than a week into his presidency, Donald Trump has instigated his first international tariff dispute. And the target isn’t China, Mexico or Canada – frequent subjects of his ire – it’s Colombia, one of America’s closest allies in South America. Colombia’s offence was refusing to allow two US flights carrying deported migrants to land because they were military, not civilian, transport planes. That appears to have been enough to prompt Trump to drop the hammer. “We will not allow the Colombian government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the criminals they forced into the United States,” Trump posted on his social media site. On top of the 25% tariffs he said he would impose, Trump said the US would introduce a travel ban and “immediate visa revocations” on Colombian government officials, as well as its allies and supporters. For his first week in office, the US president had seemed to be prioritising executive action on immigration over trade measures – even if the latter were a key campaign promise. As if to drive that point home, his first major announced tariffs are being enacted to punish a nation that he views as not sufficiently supporting America’s new hard-line immigration polices. On a day when Trump had no public appearances – he’s at his Miami resort, having reportedly played a morning round of golf – the president has chosen to make an example of Colombia. He is serving a warning to US allies and adversaries alike: If you don’t co-operate with the US, the consequences will be severe. US Government Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt posted this picture on X on 24 January announcing that deportation flights had begun This is a formidable challenge for Colombia, but it is also a test for the new Trump administration. If his sanctions lead to higher prices for US consumers will the American public object? Will they be willing to tolerate some financial pain incurred to advance Trump’s immigration priorities? The US imports about 27% of its coffee from Colombia, according to the US Department of Agriculture, as well as other goods like bananas, crude oil, avocados and flowers. The coffee imports alone are worth nearly $2bn (£1.6bn). Importers could shift to other sources to avoid this, which would hit Colombian producers by reducing a key market. Colombia’s President Gustavo was quick to respond on Sunday afternoon, launching his own retaliatory strike in the war of words. It’s no secret that Petro doesn’t like Donald Trump – he’s heavily criticised his policies on migration and the environment in the past. That just ratcheted up. In a lengthy response on X, he said Trump would “wipe out the human species because of greed” and accused the US president of considering Colombians an “inferior race.” Petro went on to describe himself as “stubborn” and said that while Trump could try to “carry out a coup” with “economic strength and arrogance” he would, in short, fight back. Not only did Petro appear to threaten his own retaliatory tariffs, but most significantly he said: “From today on, Colombia is open to the entire world, with open arms.” While Trump is unlikely to take threats from Colombia, this is something that should worry a US president who wants to tackle migration. His incoming administration officials have made clear that mission will require looking beyond the Mexico border. Trump’s pick for deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau has long argued that “working with other countries to stop such migratory flows” must be a “global imperative of US foreign policy”. Sunday’s spat might make working together a lot less likely. Tens of thousands of migrants every year from around the world, from India to China, head north towards the US after landing in South America and travelling up through Colombia across the Darien Gap – a key choke point just north of the Panama-Colombia border. It’s a dangerous journey usually facilitated by criminal gangs. Reuters The US’s retaliatory measures will no doubt make it harder for Trump’s administration to work with Colombia to stop this pattern. President Petro alluded to this in his response to Trump’s actions, noting that if talks over managing migration through Darien were suspended, “******** activities will increase”. Those comments could be viewed as a veiled threat of more undocumented migrants on the way. Petro was quick to say that his country would not refuse Colombian nationals deported from the US – only that they must receive “dignified treatment”. He even offered use of his presidential aircraft as an alternative means of transport. According to senior US officials, however, talking on background to CBS, the BBC’s US partner, that’s not enough to avoid the sanctions. Still, despite a Sunday of high drama, there does seem to be a path to de-escalate this sudden diplomatic standoff – if egos and national pride don’t get in the way. But these kind of tariffs are a test of will. And, from the looks of it, this is just Trump’s opening move. Russia puts World War Two focus on Soviet victims Russia puts World War Two focus on Soviet victims Steve Rosenberg BBC Russia editor BBC The memorial in St Petersburg to ‘Soviet civilians who fell victim to the Nazi Genocide’ On the edge of St Petersburg stands a dramatic memorial more than 40 metres high. At the very top is the figure of a mother with her children. Down below, depicted in bronze, are real stories of human suffering. At the bottom of some steps burns an eternal flame surrounded by the names of Nazi concentration and extermination camps. Auschwitz, Sobibor, Belzec, Treblinka… Terrifying words synonymous with the Holocaust. Yet this is not a Holocaust memorial as such. Its official title is “the memorial to Soviet civilians who fell victim to the Nazi genocide”. I listen to a tour guide as she tells a group of schoolchildren about the Treblinka-2 extermination camp. There the Nazis murdered up to 900,000 Jews. “Treblinka-2 was a death camp where a large number of people were killed in gas chambers,” she says, without specifying that most of the victims had been Jews. Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled the monument last year on 27 January: a date with a double historical significance for Russia. On this day in 1944 Soviet forces broke the almost 900-day siege of Leningrad. Exactly one year later the Red Army entered the gates of the Auschwitz death camp. Getty Images Vladimir Putin, pictured next to former French president Jacques Chirac, attended the 2005 ceremony in Poland commemorating the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. This year he is not invited. It is because of the Red Army’s liberation of Auschwitz that 27 January was later declared International Holocaust Remembrance Day. But when he opened the memorial to Soviet civilians, Vladimir Putin spoke not of the Holocaust, but of the “genocide of the Soviet people”. He argued that the Nazis’ aim had been “to seize our country’s rich natural resources and territories, as well as to exterminate the majority of its citizens”. It’s not that Russia has gone silent on the Holocaust. In the run-up to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, there have been several Holocaust-related events across the country. But in Russia today there is a discernible shift in focus, away from the Holocaust to how the Soviet people as a whole, including Russian people, suffered in World War Two. More than 27 million Soviet citizens were killed in what is known here as the Great Patriotic War. Getty Images A Russian army doctor examines a survivor of Auschwitz after the Red Army liberated the camp in January 1945 This change in emphasis hasn’t gone unnoticed. “Nobody argues that there were millions of victims during the second world war,” Israel’s Ambassador to Moscow Simone Halperin tells me. “But an industrialised plan to kill, eliminate, erase from the face of the earth a race: that was against the Jewish people. I think it is of critical importance to remember that the Holocaust was designed as the genocide of the Jewish people.” “It is not because [the Russian authorities] do not want to speak about the Holocaust or the Jews,” suggests historian and researcher Konstantin Pakhaliuk. “The idea is about presenting Russians as victims, to feel that we are victims: victims of Western powers, victims in history. That is the core idea of this narrative.” Konstantin lives and works abroad. Back home he has been declared a “foreign agent”, a label often used to punish critics of the Russian authorities. He argues that the narrative of Russia as victim has become especially strong since the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine. “If you are a victim, you cannot bear responsibility,” Mr Pakhaliuk says. When Putin opened the memorial last year he focused on the 27m Soviet citizens who were killed during the war In the Soviet Union there was little public discussion of the Holocaust and what had been the systematic ******* of European Jews by Hitler. On sites of mass execution of Jews by the Nazis, on Soviet territory, there were few monuments or plaques referencing Jewish victims. That began to change after the fall of Communism. Russian officials began to speak proudly of their country’s historic role in defeating Hitler and saving the Jewish people from extermination. Twenty years ago President Putin was invited to Poland to take part in events marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Speaking in Krakow on 27 January 2005 he noted: “The Nazis chose Poland as the site of the planned mass extermination of people, above all, of Jews… we see the Holocaust not only as a national tragedy for the Jewish people but as a catastrophe for all of humanity.” “It is our duty to remember the Holocaust,” he added. Since then, Russia’s relations with Poland, Europe and the West in general have grown increasingly tense, especially after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Russian officials have not been invited back to Poland for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp. “This is the anniversary of liberation. We remember the victims, but we also celebrate freedom,” the director of the Auschwitz Museum Piotr Cywinski wrote last September. “It is hard to imagine the presence of Russia, which clearly does not understand the value of freedom.” The decision not to extend an invitation to Moscow has been condemned by one of Russia’s most influential Jewish leaders. “Not inviting Russia is offensive to the memory of the liberators and their contribution to the victory over fascism,” ****** Alexander Boroda, president of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia said at a press conference recently in Moscow. “It is a very bad sign because memory is important and there are common values that helped defeat fascism. Despite their differences, the countries of the anti-Hitler coalition, different political systems and ideologies managed to unite… for a common victory.” Meanwhile, Jewish groups here are doing what they can to remind Russians of the past so that it is never repeated. “The right wing is on the rise everywhere. The number of Holocaust deniers is increasing,” says Anna Bokshitskaya, Executive Director of the Russian Jewish Congress. “That’s why it is crucially important to let people know about the events that happened more than 80 years ago.” Source link #Russia #puts #World #War #focus #Soviet #victims Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

People turn to community support as thousands still without power People turn to community support as thousands still without power Terri-Lee Watson Terri-Lee Watson’s son has Cystic Fibrosis which can be aggravated by cold weather ‘Worst-case scenario’ “The coldness can be really detrimental to his health,” she said. “A cold could sit on his chest and give him a chest infection.” The family spent Friday night in their own home, using blankets to stay warm, but have since moved out to stay with family members. “We’re just so lucky that we have got family up here, because there are so many people who will be stuck at home and have to just make do with what they have,” she said. “He’s got a nebuliser to do every day. If he didn’t do that, it could affect his health; he could get mucus build-up in his chest. “It wouldn’t just be a cold to him. It could be a ****** chest infection that could land him in the hospital. “The one or two days that he has missed his nebuliser hopefully won’t have an effect on his health, but if it were to go on for the full week, it definitely would, and we can’t take that chance.” Ms Watson said she’s had to do additional physiotherapy on her son to counteract the cold. She told BBC News NI that she hopes NIE’s estimate of ten days to restore service is the “worst-case scenario”. “I’m hoping that there’s a good chance that it comes on any day really, or any hour possible,” she said.
