  1. Ryanair cuts passenger traffic goal again on Boeing delays Ryanair cuts passenger traffic goal again on Boeing delays Passengers wait to board an aircraft of low cost Irish airline Ryanair at the Berlin-Brandenburg airport in Schoenefeld near Berlin, Germany, on March 13, 2024. John Macdougall | Afp | Getty Images Budget airline Ryanair on Monday reported stronger-than-expected after-tax profit for the December quarter, but once more cut its passenger traffic goal for the fiscal year to the end of March 2026 amid Boeing delivery delays. Europe’s largest low-cost carrier posted after-tax profit of 149 million euros ($155.8 million) for the fiscal third quarter to the end of December, coming in comfortably above expectations. A company poll of analysts had anticipated 60 million euros profit for the three-month *******, Reuters reported. Ryanair cited marginally higher fares due to stronger Christmas and New Year bookings, noting traffic grew 9% to 45 million passengers despite “prolonged” Boeing delays. The low-cost airline said that, while Boeing’s 737 production is recovering from a strike at the firm in late 2024, Ryanair no longer expected the troubled U.S. planemaker to deliver sufficient aircraft to facilitate full-year traffic growth to 210 million passengers across the twelve months to the end of March 2026. It downgraded this figure to 206 million. An earlier growth target of 215 million passengers over the same ******* was trimmed in November. “I’d be optimistic into next year. Bookings are very strong into the summer, although it is just too early to call where they may go,” Ryanair CFO Neil Sorahan told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” on Monday. “Disappointed that we’re not going to hit the traffic numbers that we would have hoped,” he added. Cautious guidance Sorahan, who said he recently returned from a trip to Boeing’s production facilities into Seattle, said he’d seen “huge improvements in relation to supply chain and everything else” in recent months. “I have a high level of confidence that the remaining nine aircraft that we need to get to 181 ‘Gamechangers’ along with the existing fleet will come in,” he added. Sorahan said that Boeing appeared to have “turned the corner,” adding that he was hopeful Ryanair would not need to cut its traffic targets even further. Analysts at Citi said Ryanair’s full-year capacity guidance is likely to “create volatility” in the firm’s share price, “but given it is an industry-wide issue, we think that it can be supportive for the pricing environment.” Ryanair said it was “cautiously guiding” after-tax profit for the 12 months through to March 31 in a range of 1.55 billion euros to 1.61 billion euros, noting the outcome remains subject to the risk of conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East and to further Boeing delivery delays. 3. Elliot Yeo injury: West Coast Eagles star’s setback revealed as midfielder in doubt for season opener Elliot Yeo injury: West Coast Eagles star’s setback revealed as midfielder in doubt for season opener West Coast star Elliot Yeo is in serious doubt for the Eagles’ season opener having sustained a double injury blow following a training mishap on Friday. Yeo was sent for scans on his knee and ankle last Friday after suffering an injury during a match simulation session at Mineral Resources Park. There were fears the 31-year-old had ruptured his ACL after being tackled during the session, but those fears were allayed earlier on Monday before the club confirmed an MCL injury later in the day. Yeo has also sustained a syndesmosis damage to his right ankle in the incident, with the Eagles yet to determine a time frame for his return. It means Yeo is racing to be fit to play in their season opener in just under seven weeks’ time on March 16. “There are always risks involved as we increase the intensity at training to prepare for the season, and unfortunately Elliot has sustained injuries to his right knee and ankle,” Eagles general manager of football Gavin Bell said. “We are working through his rehab program and a return-to-play timeline. “At this stage, we’re hopeful he will be available in the early part of the season.” West Coast will return from a four-day break on Wednesday to continue their pre-season, with an eye on their first practice match against Richmond at Mineral Resources Park on February 17. They will then host North Melbourne down in Bunbury on March 1 ahead of their round one clash against Gold Coast at Optus Stadium a fortnight later. 4. China’s DeepSeek sets off AI market rout China’s DeepSeek sets off AI market rout SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Nasdaq futures slumped and technology shares slid in Japan on Monday as surging popularity of a ******** discount artificial intelligence model wobbled investors’ faith in the profitability of AI and the sector’s voracious demand for high-tech chips. Nasdaq 100 futures were down 2.6% and S&P 500 futures slipped 1.4% by the European morning, and shares in Nvidia supplier Advantest fell 8.5% in Tokyo. Frankfurt-listed shares of Nvidia slipped about 7%, while those of Tesla, Amazon and Meta fell more than 2% in early European trading. Startup DeepSeek has rolled out a free assistant it says uses lower-cost chips and less data, seemingly challenging a widespread bet in financial markets that AI will drive demand along a supply chain from chipmakers to data centres. “It’s a case of a crowded trade, and now DeepSeek is giving a reason for investors and traders to unwind,” said Wong Kok Hoong, head of equity sales trading at Maybank. AI-focused startup investor SoftBank Group slid more than 8%, on course for its biggest one-day fall since Sept. 30. Last week it announced a $19 billion commitment to fund Stargate, a data-centre joint venture with OpenAI. Chip-making equipment giant Tokyo Electron fell 5%. Tech-heavy markets in Taiwan and South Korea were closed. European tech stocks, especially Dutch computer chip equipment maker ASML, which counts Taiwan’s TSMC, Intel and Samsung as its customers, will likely face pressure at the open. Shares of Nvidia, the poster child of AI, have risen 196% since the start of 2024, outperforming the 35% gain in the Nasdaq. CAPEX IN QUESTION Little is known about the small Hangzhou startup behind DeeepSeek, but its assistant leapfrogged rival ChatGPT to become the top-rated free application on Apple’s App Store in the United States on Monday. DeepSeek researchers wrote in a paper last month that the DeepSeek-V3 model, launched on Jan. 10, used Nvidia’s H800 chips for training, spending less than $6 million. H800 chips are not top-of-the-line. Initially developed as a reduced-capability product to get around restrictions on sales to China, they were subsequently banned by U.S. sanctions. Besides chips, data centres and related companies also took a hit on Monday, with Malaysia’s utility conglomerate YTL Power falling 7% in Kuala Lumpur to its lowest in two months. “The market is questioning the capex spend of the major tech companies,” said Nick Ferres, chief investment officer at Vantage Point Asset Management in Singapore, noting that positioning had become crowded. Story Continues To be sure, much remains unknown about the details of DeepSeek’s development and the hardware it uses. “The idea that the most cutting-edge technologies in America, like Nvida and ChatGPT, are the most superior globally, there’s concern that this perspective might start to change,” said Masahiro Ichikawa, chief market strategist at Sumitomo Mitsui DS Asset Management. “I think it might be a bit premature.” Markets reaction in China was also mixed, with a CSI300 index of AI shares down 2.2% but big data stocks up 4%. 5. After Years of Requests, No Man’s Sky Devs Are Finally Granting the One Deathwish That Almost Every Player Has After Years of Requests, No Man’s Sky Devs Are Finally Granting the One Deathwish That Almost Every Player Has No Man’s Sky has had one of the most incredible journeys as a game since its release in August 2016. If you’ve been playing the game throughout the last eight years, you’re either a maniac, incredibly patient, or both because the game had an incredibly rocky start and it took all of the eight years to make a comeback. We could be blowing ourselves up very soon. | Image Credit: Hello Games Now we wait for the World Part 2 update and Sean Murray, the game’s creator, may have just given us a hint at the arrival of a long-requested feature. No Man’s Sky players might finally get their wish to fly into a gas-giant planet and blow themselves up in spectacular fashion. The hints are coming for No Man’s Sky‘s next update The developers are cooking one again. | Image Credit: Hello Games The upcoming Worlds Part 2 update was teased earlier this week via Murray’s signature cryptic emoji tweet—a ringed planet, akin to Saturn, which is a gas giant. Since the Worlds Part 2 update is the next one, fans have speculated that it is a hint for it. The Worlds Part 2 update will be a follow-up to Worlds Part 1, which was released in mid-2024 and one of the updates that solidified the game’s successful comeback. Gas giants have been a hot topic among fans since 2019 when No Man’s Sky creator Sean Murray admitted in an interview with GamesRadar that many players wanted them purely to experience the thrill of dying in space. At the time, Murray called it a “surprisingly common” request but noted the design challenges involved. It’s a bunch of work that may not have the biggest payoff for people, ultimately, but also I understand that it is role-playing, in a sense. But we also have to factor in new players and find a balance there – people don’t like to just die inexplicably, if they don’t know the reason behind it. Gas giants are a really cool concept for No Man’s Sky if you think about it. There’s a big playground for imagination and creativity. We could potentially see floating cities, planetary storms, new ecosystems, and alien creatures of all sorts. And of course, the kamikaze option to satisfy the request of players. It’s been a very successful journey of redemption What kind of updates can we expect next? | Image Credit: Hello Games This isn’t the first time Hello Games has expanded the planetary diversity of No Man’s Sky. The Worlds Part 1 update, released in mid-2024 included a massive overhaul to environmental generation. We saw the introduction of new biomes and improved water visuals with the developers bringing back the focus on exploration. It was a huge move that really paid off don’t you think? [Hidden Content] — Sean Murray (@NoMansSky) January 26, 2025 It was widely praised as a transformative moment for the game, and the decision to split the Worlds update into multiple parts may have been genius as well. Now we know that there’s more coming, and with how dedicated the developers have been, there’s no fear of disappointment. Eight years after its rocky launch, the game recently achieved a milestone on Steam. From a game that was reviewed as Mostly Negative at launch, the fact that it has finally reached the coveted Very Positive rating with over 80% favorable reviews is a miracle and a half. And we only have the developers to thank for being so dedicated. The Worlds Part 2 update has yet to receive an official release date but we can’t wait for what Hello Games has in store for us players. For a game built on the promise of endless possibilities we sure are reaching that point. Have you been playing No Man’s Sky? What are your thoughts regarding the game? Let us know in the comments! 7. Thousands without power four days after Storm Eowyn Thousands without power four days after Storm Eowyn Ashleigh Keenan-Bryce BBC Scotland News Getty Images Trees, like this one in Helensburgh, were brought down by hurricane-force winds across Scotland on Friday Thousands of homes are still without power days after Storm Éowyn caused destruction across Scotland. Scottish Power Energy Networks, which supplies central and southern Scotland, said about 9,000 homes had no supply on Sunday evening. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said it was still working to restore power to 4,700 homes, particularly in Argyll, Kintyre, and on island communities. Public transport continues to face some disruptions but ScotRail said the vast majority of services are now operational. The following routes will not reopen on Monday, according to Network Rail: Kilwinning – Ayr/Largs/ArdrossanDalreoch – BallochAyr – StranraerPaisley CanalPaisley – Gourock/Wemyss Bay Most schools are expected to re-open, though the Scottish government said about 20 will remain closed for repairs. Following a meeting of the Scottish government’s resilience room, First Minister John Swinney said: “”The severity of the damage caused by this major event has had a considerable impact across a wide area of the country. “While every effort has been made over the weekend to fully restore services, unfortunately it is clear some disruption can continue to be expected.” Reuters Several buildings were damaged on Friday during a rare red weather warning including this property in Denny, Falkirk At the storm’s peak, hurricane-force winds caused more than 280,000 homes to lose power across Scotland. SSEN said customers have been provided with realistic updates on when they can expect supply to be restored with those awaiting reconnection urged to monitor SSEN’s power track website. The provider estimated all customers will be reconnected before the end of Monday. It has also provided warm spaces, hot meals and drinks to people in several communities who have been impacted by the storm. Andy Smith, SSEN director of customer operations for the north of Scotland, added: “Several hundred engineers are working hard right now to fix faults safely and quickly, and we’ve had a group arrive from the southeast of England on Sunday morning to support our own response.” Getty Images Helensburgh leisure centre lost its roof during the storm On the trains, ScotRail advised customers to expect a continued disruption of services. Teams of Network Rail engineers have been checking routes through the night since Friday and carrying out repair work with around 500 individual incidents reported. These include more than 120 trees on tracks, damaged overhead wires, power supply failures and other objects and debris blown onto the line. David Ross, ScotRail communications director told BBC Radio’s Good Morning Scotland programme it had been “a very challenging weekend” and there was “still significant impact across the country”. He said: “A lot of work has been carried out over the course of the weekend by colleagues at Network Rail. “The vast majority routes are up and running but there is still ongoing disruption is some parts of the country.” He said in Ayrshire and Inverclyde damage to overhead wires are causing cancellations, overhanging trees in the Whifflet are causing disruption and trees are still falling onto the lines in Lanarkshire. “Some parts of the country where we are only just finding in the last short time discovering further problems,” he added. “It is a changing picture and it will change over the course of the morning again.” He warned some damage won’t be a “quick fix” and disruption could last a few days. Ferry operator CalMac has cancelled sailings between Ardrossan and Brodick on Monday with other sailings facing possible disruptions. Passengers are advised to check their journey before travelling. Police Scotland responded to almost 1,900 weather-related incidents across the country over the weekend with some roads closed or disrupted due to debris and fallen trees. 8. FOMC Decision, Mega-Cap Tech Earnings, and December PCE on Agenda This Week FOMC Decision, Mega-Cap Tech Earnings, and December PCE on Agenda This Week Tesla (NASDAQ:), Meta (NASDAQ:) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:) all report after the closing bell, Wednesday, January 29th, 2025. Three large-cap growth giants (part of the Mega-Cap 7) will have a significant influence on the market Thursday morning, January 30th, especially since the FOMC decision to be announced Wednesday afternoon at 1 pm central, often has an impact on the last few hours of trading that day. (Late Wednesday and after hours could make for interesting trading.) Source: EarningsWhispers chart Amazon (NASDAQ:), and Alphabet (NASDAQ:) are scheduled to report the following week, the week starting February 3rd ’25, per the Briefing.com calendar. On Thursday, investors get a small break from market-moving news, although more earnings news will be forthcoming with Apple (NASDAQ:) Intel (NASDAQ:) and Visa (NYSE:) scheduled for Thursday, January 30th, ’25 after the market close. (It’s doubtful Intel is a market mover, but Visa, as a large-cap growth stock, is part of the ’s leadership group the last two years.) Friday morning is really what’s important (in terms of economic data) though, since December PCE and Core PCE are due out at 7:30 am central time. The market’s two most important inflation indicators are Core CPI and Core PCE, and while Core CPI was right in line at +0.2%, two weeks ago, and we saw a Treasury rally following the release, of the two releases, the Core PCE matters more. Source: Briefing.com (click on the table to expand it) Consensus is expecting +0.2% for December Core PCE. The mainstream media loves to raise the stress level of viewers in front of important data like this. Fed Funds Futures: While there is a 97% probability that the present 4.375% fed funds rate target will remain “unchanged” at the Wednesday, January 29th FOMC meeting referenced above, the CME fed funds futures are currently forecasting a 27% probability of a 25 basis point rate cut for the March 19th, 2025 FOMC meeting. Let’s watch and see if that 27% probability changes on Wednesday afternoon, and then again on Friday morning after the December PCE data is released. Personally, I do think the Fed Funds rate will continue to drop over time, certainly below 4% since the Fed statements indicate that the current Fed Funds rate remains above neutral at it’s current levels. Despite the hysteria of the mainstream financial media, I do expect the Fed will eventually see a core PCE and Core CPI around 2.5%, at which time they could declare victory. Given the expected drop in fed funds in 2025, and a slowly declining inflation rate, there is still good opportunity (in my opinion) in the longer-end of the Treasury yield curve, or so-called ” adding duration” for investors. It won’t likely happen next week, but it should happen. High-yield and investment-grade credit remains well bid. A 5% would be a perfect spot to add duration, but investors may not see that level again. Above 5% on the 10-year Treasury yield, and there’s a ******* problem for Treasuries. Conclusion: 78 S&P 500 companies have reported Q4 ’24 results as of Thursday night, January 23 ’25, and another 103 S&P 500 components will report next week, beginning January 27th, ’25, both statistics according to LSEG. Bloomberg is out with headlines this weekend talking about the “stocks jumping on earnings wins by the most since 2018”. That could be an accurate statement since the so-called “upside surprise” or “beat rate” for S&P 500 earnings for Q4 ’24 so far is +8.6%, versus last quarter’s very strong actual rate of +7.5%. ( from January 3 ’25, where readers were given a heads-up to expect a Q4 ’24 earnings season) The tip-off was the higher starting growth rate for Q4 ’24 EPS relative to other quarters. Here’s the week-to-week progression in the expected Q4 ’24 S&P 500 EPS growth. The low was 9.6% in early January ’25. Expect the actual Q4 ’24 S&P 500 EPS growth to eventually come in around 11.5% – 12%, but much depends on the mega-cap 10 earnings of next week and the week after. Healthcare and industrial sector EPS growth is expected at +4% and -0.3% respectively, for full-year 2024 earnings growth, with just 2 – 3 weeks left in the reporting ******* and 8 weeks left in the calendar year quarter. Those same two sectors are expected to grow EPS +20.4%, and +19.2% in 2025, with the industrial sector showing the most improvement in y-o-y growth since October ’24. (Healthcare numbers are unchanged.) The defense sector, which typically trades better under Republican Administrations, will see Boeing (NYSE:), Lockheed Martin (NYSE:), and General Dynamics (NYSE:) report Tuesday and Wednesday this coming week. Defense is part of the industrial sector. Clients are long the (Defense ETF), as well as Boeing and Lockheed Martin coming into earnings this week. My biggest fear around the sector is that the defense and military budget will be used as a hammer for the deficit reduction nail. Congress did pass a $888 billion defense package last Spring ’24. Disclaimer: None of this is advice or recommendation, but only an opinion. Past performance is no guarantee of futures results. Investing can and does involve the loss of principal, even for short periods of time. All S&P 500 EPS and revenue data is sourced from LSEG. 10. Rare Pterosaur Neck Bone Discovery Shows Crocodilian Bite From 76 Million Years Ago Rare Pterosaur Neck Bone Discovery Shows Crocodilian Bite From 76 Million Years Ago A fossilised neck bone from a juvenile flying reptile has been discovered in Canada, shedding light on predator-prey interactions from 76 million years ago. Found in Dinosaur Provincial Park, Alberta, the vertebra displays clear evidence of being bitten by a crocodile-like predator. This rare find offers a glimpse into the Cretaceous *******, where such encounters between reptiles shaped the dynamics of ancient ecosystems. Pterosaur Bone Found With Bite Mark According to the study published in the Journal of Paleontology, the fossil belonged to a young Azhdarchid pterosaur, Cryodrakon boreas, which had a wingspan of two metres as a juvenile. The puncture mark, measuring four millimetres in diameter, was identified as the result of a crocodilian bite. The research team from the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology, the University of Reading, and the University of New England confirmed through micro-CT scans that the damage occurred during the animal’s lifetime or shortly after its death, rather than during fossilisation or excavation. Dr. Caleb Brown, a curator at the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Paleontology, told phys.org, that Pterosaur bones are extremely fragile, making it rare to find evidence of predation. Discovering such a bite on a juvenile specimen was even more extraordinary. Insights Into Prehistoric Predation The fossil was unearthed in July 2023 during an international field course led by Dr. Brian Pickles, a palaeoecologist at the University of Reading. Dr. Pickles explained to phys.org that bite marks on fossils offer valuable evidence of interactions between species, adding that this particular find suggests crocodilians preyed on or scavenged young pterosaurs in the region. This discovery represents the first documented case in North America of crocodilian feeding behaviour involving Azhdarchid pterosaurs. Similar evidence has previously been reported from Romania, underscoring the opportunistic feeding habits of these ancient predators. The study highlights the complex ecological relationships that existed in the prehistoric world. 11. OpenAI Updates Canvas With o1 AI Model Support, Expands to ChatGPT App for macOS OpenAI Updates Canvas With o1 AI Model Support, Expands to ChatGPT App for macOS OpenAI announced several upgrades for its Canvas feature on Saturday. The sandbox-styled pop-up window that allows users to work alongside the chatbot to make inline edits, formatting, and coding was first released in October 2024 in early beta. It was then rolled out to all users in December 2024. Now, the AI firm has added support for the o1 artificial intelligence (AI) model to the feature. Additionally, it is now being added to the ChatGPT app for macOS across all the user tiers. OpenAI Upgrades ChatGPT’s Canvas Feature The AI firm announced the new updates to Canvas in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). Until now, paid subscribers could use the o1 AI model for general output generation, however, the reasoning-focused model was unavailable in Canvas. Now, users subscribed to the ChatGPT Plus, Teams, and Pro plans will get to use Canvas with the o1 model. To use the o1 model with Canvas, users will first have to select the AI model from the model picker. After that, accessing Canvas via either the “/canvas” command or the toolbox icon will open the sandbox interface with o1 capabilities. Additionally, Canvas is now also available on the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS. Canvas is available to the free users alongside all the paid tiers. However, free users will not get to access the o1 model. Notably, earlier the feature was only available in the web version of the platform. OpenAI has not shared any plans to roll it to the mobile apps or the Windows app. Further, Canvas’ functionality is also being expanded to support HTML and React code. The tool will be able to render these coding languages alongside the existing support for JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, or PHP. The support for HTML and React is also limited to the paid subscribers at present. OpenAI also revealed that the Enterprise and Edu subscribers will get both o1 model support as well as access to HTML and React rendering in the next couple of weeks. Notably, Canvas is a collaborative sandbox interface where both human users and the AI can work together on projects. After ChatGPT generates an output based on a prompt, the user can take over and make inline edits to the response to fine-tune it. OpenAI highlighted that the feature is suitable for creative writing tasks and coding-related work. 12. Could Profit-Taking Spark a Deeper Pullback in Stocks This Week? Could Profit-Taking Spark a Deeper Pullback in Stocks This Week? In a recent webinar, I mentioned that markets like to end the week on a high ahead of a National Holiday. The weekend before MLK Day and the Inauguration was no exception, with all the indices and their respective ETFs we follow closing out green. The Inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President also marks the transition from one political era to another, and this week, we have seen markets react to this new reality with some dramatic price action and volatility, not least owing to President Trump’s relentless use of social media. It was quite a ride during his first Presidency, and there is no reason to suppose it won’t be the same again this time. Indeed, the apparent backtracking on tariffs drove the lower and stocks higher. Whether this continues remains to be seen, but by Friday, our indices and ETFs had all pulled back as a combination of profit-taking, next week’s heavyweight earnings from companies such as Apple (NASDAQ:), Microsoft (NASDAQ:), Meta (NASDAQ:) & Tesla (NASDAQ:) and the FOMC. And, of course, we always have the Trump tweets. From a technical perspective, the & have taken out their ATH, while the {{20|NDX} and have yet to do so. However, with next week’s earnings, these two may catch up. As always with earnings, expect a strong reaction on the release of the numbers and further volatility during the subsequent call. MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – Four people, including a teen boy, were injured overnight when a fight escalated into a stabbing in Minneapolis. What we know Minneapolis police were called to Lowry Avenue North near Fremont Avenue North shortly after 4 a.m. for the report of a fight. Around the same time, officers also received a call about a fight down the block along Irving Avenue North near Lowry. Police say at the Lowry Avenue location, they found a man, a woman, and a boy in his late teens who had been stabbed. At the home on Irving Avenue North, they found another man who had also suffered a stab wound. 19. Sydney’s Socceroo Matthews joins Pompey in $2.5m deal Sydney’s Socceroo Matthews joins Pompey in $2.5m deal Sydney FC have cashed in on the remarkable rise of Hayden Matthews, selling the Socceroos centre back to English Championship club Portsmouth for a club record fee. In a transfer believed to be worth close to $2.5 million, Matthews, 20, becomes the most expensive defender in the history of *********** football. Only Bayern Munich forward Nestory Irankunda and Celtic winger Marco Tilio have been sold overseas for larger fees. Matthews’ transfer caps a rapid climb from the fringes of Sydney’s squad to a maiden Australia cap late last year. Matthews only made his starting A-League Men debut in February last year, but has gone on to become an ever-present under Sky Blues boss Ufuk Talay. “I’m incredibly excited to join Portsmouth FC and take the next step in my career,” Matthews said. “Sydney FC has been like a second family to me – they’ve given me the opportunity to chase my dream of becoming a professional footballer and playing in Europe, and I’ll always be grateful for that.” The defender’s fine form was rewarded with a maiden Socceroos call-up in November, with Matthews winning his first cap in a 2-2 draw with Bahrain. “Hayden has been a credit to Sydney FC both on and off the field,” Talay said. “This move is a testament to his hard work, talent and determination. “While we’re sad to see him go, we’re incredibly proud of what he’s achieved. “His departure also opens up opportunities for other players within our squad, and we hope to announce a replacement or two for Hayden very soon.” Matthews, who missed Sydney’s 2-0 loss to Melbourne Victory last Friday to travel to the ***, will be surrounded by plenty of familiar faces at Portsmouth. The defender has signed a four-year deal and will play alongside *********** striker Kusini Yengi, left-back Jacob Farrell and attacker Thomas Waddingham, who signed with Pompey from Brisbane Roar last week. Waddingham scored on his debut in a 5-1 loss to West Bromwich Albion last weekend that leaves Portsmouth just one place clear of the Championship drop zone. Ola and Uber received notices from an Indian government consumer body on Thursday, directed by consumer affairs minister Pralhad Joshi, following media reports and complaints that Apple users were charged higher for the same ride than those using phones that ran on Android operating systems. “We have a homogenous pricing structure for all our customers and we do not differentiate based on the operating system of the user’s cellphone for identical rides,” an Ola Consumer spokesperson said. “We have clarified the same to the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) today, and we will work with them to clear any misunderstanding in this regard.” Apple and Google have not yet responded to Reuters’ requests for comments. © Thomson Reuters 2025 (This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.) 21. Trapped miners ‘resort to cannibalism’ after police fail to ‘smoke them out’ Trapped miners ‘resort to cannibalism’ after police fail to ‘smoke them out’ The two survivors speak quietly as they recount how emaciated miners broke the ultimate taboo to avoid dying of hunger. Trapped nearly a mile beneath the earth after police blocked their food and water, one recalled how his colleagues “resorted to cannibalism”. “They cut parts of legs, arms, and ribs for sustenance. They decided it was their only remaining option for survival,” the man, who declined to be named, told The Telegraph. His claims echoes similar accounts slowly emerging from a mining disaster which has shocked but also divided South Africa. While he and his colleague insist they did not take part, they were forced into their own desperate acts, eating cockroaches after running out of food. Images of skeletal miners emerging from the shafts have prompted accusations of a police ‘massacre’ – Ihsaan Haffejee/Anadolu Last week rescuers retrieved 78 bodies and 246 survivors from abandoned shafts of one of the country’s deepest mines. The deaths came in a lengthy stand-off between police and ******** miners who make a risky living by trespassing in disused gold mines to eke out what is left of the deposits. In August, police began blocking food and water from entering the old Buffelsfontein Gold Mine near Stilfontein in the North West province of South Africa, to try to force hundreds of ******** prospectors back to the surface. ‘Smoke them out’ ******** mining is common and the government has taken a popular hard line on what it says are highly organised and ruthless criminal gangs behind the business. Police said it was too dangerous to enter the warren of old workings to confront armed criminal gangs, and instead they would stop supplies to “smoke them out”. As the stand-off continued, the authorities maintained that the miners were able to make their way out, but were resisting in order to avoid arrest and deportation. More than 1,300 did return to the surface and appeared in court. ‘Horrific display of state wilful negligence’ Yet as the months wore on, unions and local people said large numbers of others were actually trapped or too weak to get out, and needed to be rescued. Courts eventually ordered the authorities to provide humanitarian aid and employ a mining rescue company to bring up the remainder. Images of scores of body bags being hauled to the surface and skeletal miners emerging into the light have now prompted accusations that the police committed a “massacre”. An aerial view of the mine shaft where an estimated 4000 ******** miners were trapped in a disused gold mine – AP The government’s coalition partner has called for an investigation, while the country’s second largest trade union federation called the incident “one of the most horrific displays of state wilful negligence in recent history”. Pressure on the police intensified this week when they admitted an alleged kingpin who oversaw the ******** Buffelsfontein operation had escaped custody with the help of corrupt officers. The government has remained defiant however. The mining minister, Gwede Mantashe, said this week: “If you go to a dangerous place such as a neglected mine and stay there for about three months, starving yourself to death, how does that become the responsibility of the state?” Acts of desperation South Africa is rich in gold, platinum, manganese and other metals, and the country is strewn with 6,000 abandoned mines that have been exhausted or are now uneconomical. But in a country with a 32 per cent unemployment rate, plenty are desperate enough to break into the disused shafts to see if anything is left. South Africa estimates the activity loses the country £3 billion a year in revenue, while the miners, who are often from neighbouring countries, are accused of bringing crime waves to nearby communities. The ******** miners are known as “Zama Zamas”, which translates roughly as “those who take a chance” or “those who try their luck”. The two South African-born miners who spoke to the Telegraph said they had entered a shaft in July 2024 and worked on the supply lines ferrying food and people into the depths by rope. “Food, medicine, alcohol and beverages were once plentiful,” they recalled. They were making approximately £400 a month and intended to save up to get driving licences and security guard certificates. Vanished mysteriously Police cut off all supplies in August. When they briefly resumed months later after the local community got court orders to compel the authorities, the underground gang bosses began hoarding what made its way down. Police allege that a Lesotho national named James Neo Tshoaeli was a ringleader of the underground operation and was responsible for some deaths, assaults and torture said to have taken place. Tshoaeli, known as “Tiger”, is accused of hoarding food away from workers. The two miners, who made their way to the surface in December, are now on bail after being charged with ******** mining and possession of gold. They described Tshoaeli as “brutal”, and alleged he meted out punishment to workers. Tshoaeli is said to have made it to the surface earlier this month, before mysteriously vanishing from custody while in a police vehicle en route to detention. Police have blamed corrupt officers and admitted his disappearance is an embarrassment. When asked if they are investigating allegations of cannibalism, police have only said their investigation will take in the full scope of what went on underground. Police say they will investigate if the miners were denied safe exit from the shaft, resulting in mass deaths underground – Ihsaan Haffejee/Anadolu Ian Cameron, chairman of the South African parliament’s police select committee, said it was too early to blame the police for the deaths, as it was not yet clear what had happened underground. He said: “If the police did deny them exiting the shaft and they then starved to death, then there’s a need for a serious investigation, not only investigation, but consequences that need to be upheld from the police officers involved.” The escape of Tshoaeli had also raised many questions, he added. “The fact that he got away, and the police admitted to it, clearly showed that the police were complicit in something and that raises a lot of eyebrows in a broader context. “What else were the police complicit or involved in with regard to this whole thing?” Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. 22. How to choose the best TV for gaming right now How to choose the best TV for gaming right now Most of the time, the best TVs for gaming are the best TVs you can buy, *******. That said, there are a few key features to prioritize when picking out a big screen for your PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. While nobody needs a fancy TV to just enjoy a video game, the right set can help you maximize your experience. If you’re not sure where to begin, we’ve laid out some helpful advice for finding something good and researched a few well-reviewed gaming TVs that should suit your needs today. What to look for in a gaming TV Whether you use it for gaming or not, all good TVs are built on the same foundations. You want a 4K resolution, high-enough brightness to overcome glare and make HDR content pop, a relatively high contrast ratio with deep and uniform ****** tones, colors that find the right balance between accuracy and saturation and wide viewing angles. For video games specifically, you want a TV with minimal input lag and fast motion response, with no blur or other unwanted artifacts behind quick-moving objects. Of course, finding a set that does all of this well and fits into your budget can be tricky. OLED and LCD For now, top OLED TVs generally offer the best picture quality for gaming or otherwise. But good OLED sets usually cost more than their LCD counterparts, and some models may not get bright enough for those who have their TV set in a particularly bright room. More specifically, modern OLED TVs may utilize different types of OLED display tech: WOLED (i.e., “White OLED”) or the newer QD-OLED. We won’t dig too deep into how the two diverge in panel composition and subpixel structure, but the simplified version is that QD-OLED displays use a layer of quantum dots (hence the “QD”) to deliver a wider gamut of more vibrant colors and higher overall brightness than traditional WOLED sets. This doesn’t mean all QD-OLED TVs are inherently better: How well an individual set performs is more important than the panel it uses, and some premium WOLED TVs like the LG G4 utilize a form of display tech called Micro Lens Array (MLA) to greatly improve brightness. (Though LG and others now appear to be ditching that for a new “four-stack” OLED structure in their next top-end models.) And virtually all OLED TVs share the same core strengths. Broadly speaking, though, a reasonably priced QD-OLED set looks like the best balance of value and picture quality today. If you opt for an LCD TV— whether to save cash or stick in room with poor light control — an advanced backlight with smaller and more precise mini LEDs and effective full-array local dimming will usually improve contrast and lighting detail. Many of these TVs, including some budget-level models, also use quantum dots to enhance colors (and are labeled as “QLED” TVs). They usually aren’t as vivid or fast in motion as the top OLED sets, but they’re often brighter and more affordable, and the best can still produce an excellent image in their own right. HDMI 2.1 To get the most out of a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S, your TV should have full HDMI 2.1 support. This update to the HDMI spec enables a higher maximum bandwidth — 48 gigabits per second, up from HDMI 2.0’s 18 Gbps — and a handful of features that are beneficial for gaming performance specifically. Those include variable refresh rate (VRR) and automatic low latency mode (ALLM), which we detail further below. Beyond that, perhaps the chief perk of HDMI 2.1 is its ability to transmit sharp 4K video up to a 120Hz refresh rate with modern consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X, or up to 144Hz with a powerful gaming PC. Not every PS5 or Xbox Series X/S game supports frame rates that high — and some only do at lower resolutions — but those that do will look and feel especially fluid in motion. HDMI 2.1 also includes support for Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC), which allows you to pass higher-quality lossless audio from a source device connected to the TV to a compatible soundbar or receiver. The more full HDMI 2.1 ports your TV has, the better. “Full” is the key word there. As reported by TFT Central, because HDMI 2.1 is backwards compatible with HDMI 2.0, TV and monitor manufacturers have been allowed to brand HDMI ports as “HDMI 2.1” even if they lack full (or any) support for the spec’s upgraded features. We recommend a few TVs below that have true HDMI 2.1 ports, but if you’re buying a new TV for gaming, make sure your chosen set isn’t trying to hide any capabilities you may consider essential. While HDMI 2.1 is the latest and greatest today, it’s worth noting that the HDMI Forum officially revealed a new HDMI 2.2 spec at CES 2025. This update promises a greater maximum bandwidth of 96 Gbps, which should technically enable even higher refresh rates and resolutions. It could also help reduce hiccups in audio and video syncing (i.e., annoying lip-sync errors). If history is any indication, though, we’re likely several years away from HDMI 2.2 ports appearing on TVs you can actually buy. Even then, the only people who could take advantage of the theoretical resolutions and refresh rates allowed by the spec are those who connect a super-powerful gaming PC to their TV. But this could always change with whatever the next PlayStation and Xbox consoles bring. HDR — High Dynamic Range HDR refers to a TV’s ability to display a wider range between the darkest and brightest parts of a picture. This broader range can bring out details that would otherwise be missing on a standard dynamic range (SDR) TV, in both the very dark and (especially) very bright areas of an image. HDR typically comes with an improvement to color reproduction as well, displaying a larger palette of more vibrant colors that brings content closer to its creator’s original vision. To get an HDR picture, you need both content that is mastered to take advantage of the tech and a TV capable of displaying that content. HDR also comes in a variety of formats, which are generally split between those that utilize static metadata (e.g., HDR10) and those that utilize dynamic metadata (e.g., HDR10+, Dolby Vision). In short, the latter allows a TV to optimize its brightness and colors on a per-scene or even per-frame basis, while the former uses one set of optimized settings for the entirety of the given content. Support for these formats can differ depending on the TV, content and game console you use. The Xbox Series X and S, for example, support Dolby Vision for gaming, while the PS5 does not. The good news is that most TVs you’d buy today are HDR-ready in some fashion, even on the budget end of the market. The catch is that some TVs are much better at getting the most out of HDR than others. The same goes for actual content mastered in HDR. With video games in particular, there aren’t quite as many titles designed to take advantage of HDR as there are movies (though the number is growing all the time), and the variance in HDR quality tends to be wider. HGiG — HDR Gaming Interest Group HGiG stands for the HDR Gaming Interest Group. Sony and Microsoft are both members, as are many TV makers and game developers. What this means is that, ideally, all the groups communicate information so that you can start up a new game on a console or PC and have it automatically recognize your display. Once that happens, the game can adjust the internal settings to adjust for that display’s capabilities and give you the best picture quality possible, without losing details in the brightest or darkest areas of the screen. For example, daylight at the end of a dark tunnel may portray a brightly lit environment instead of looking like an overexposed white blob. This is a good thing, but the reality is a bit more complicated. Not all TVs highlight HGiG compatibility in their settings menu, while only some PlayStation and Xbox games recognize and follow the guidelines. If an HGiG option is listed in your TV’s tone mapping settings, you should turn it on prior to running the console’s HDR settings. Then, if you’re playing a game that supports HDR and HGiG, you should be in good shape without having to adjust the various luminance levels again. Still, how all of this looks to you might differ depending on your TV and the game you’re playing. Owners of certain LG OLED TVs, for instance, may prefer their TV’s Dynamic Tone Mapping setting. Use whatever settings you think look best. ALLM — Auto Low Latency Mode ALLM lets a compatible source (like your PS5 or Xbox) tell your display to switch into a picture mode that reduces lag between receiving each frame of an image and displaying it on the TV. This cuts out additional processing that could be the milliseconds of difference between landing a precise input or not. Put another way, it lets your TV automatically enable its “Game” mode when it detects that you’ve launched a game. A good modern TV can do this without forcing you to enter any menus, then switch back when you’d rather watch a movie or TV show. VRR — Variable Refresh Rate VRR should sound familiar to most gamers at this point. Many players have experienced slowdown, screen tearing or stuttering as a system struggles to render each frame at the target speed, which is most commonly 60 or 30 fps on a TV. With VRR, everything stays in sync: Your display won’t show the next frame until it’s ready, which can make things feel smoother and more responsive, even if the system fails to deliver on its target frame rate. There are a few different implementations of VRR available, including Nvidia’s G-Sync, AMD’s FreeSync and the HDMI Forum’s VRR spec, which is part of the full HDMI 2.1 standard. Both a TV and an input device need to support the same VRR tech for it to work, and different devices may only support VRR within a specific refresh rate window. On a 120Hz display, for instance, the PS5’s VRR only works between 48Hz and 120Hz. As a reminder, the PS5 supports HDMI Forum VRR, the Xbox Series X/S support HDMI Forum VRR and FreeSync, while gaming PCs may support G-Sync or FreeSync depending on whether they use a Nvidia or AMD graphics card. A great gaming TV supports all the big VRR formats, but missing, say, G-Sync, isn’t a killer if you only game on a PS5 or Xbox. 8K (You don’t need it) One thing you don’t need to worry about is 8K support. Although the PS5 and Xbox Series X are theoretically capable of outputting 8K video, almost no games are made for that resolution, and 8K’s practical benefits are extremely minimal unless you plan on sitting unreasonably close to a massive TV. The few 8K TVs on the market are usually very expensive as well. Good gaming TVs you can get right now There’s never an ideal time to buy a new TV. Prices for today’s models are always dropping, and next year’s upgrades are always just around the corner. Case in point: Our latest update comes just after CES, where Samsung and LG announced initial details for much of their 2025 lineups while Hisense, TCL and Panasonic unveiled a smaller selection of sets. A few of these could be worth waiting for, particularly on the upper-end. In the price ranges where most people shop, though, most of the new sets seem to be more iterative than transformative. We’re still several months until 2024’s TVs are replaced for good, and when their successors do arrive, they’ll cost much more to start. So, per usual, you’ll get the most value by picking up a still-good TV from last year while it’s available for less. While we at Engadget do not formally review TVs, we’ve researched the market and rounded up those sets that have been widely well-received by other professional review sites we trust, including Rtings, Wirecutter, Reviewed, PCMag and others. LG Screen sizes: 42″, 48″, 55″, 65″, 77″, 83″ | Display type: WOLED | Resolution: 4K | Maximum refresh rate: 144Hz | HDR formats: Dolby Vision, HDR10, HLG | HDMI ports: 4x HDMI 2.1 | VRR: HDMI Forum VRR, FreeSync, G-Sync certified | Smart OS: webOS | Screen form: Flat | ALLM: Yes | TV tuner: ATSC 1.0 The LG C4 has just about everything we look for in a good gaming TV, according to reviews around the web. Its superb OLED panel delivers excellent contrast, bold colors, inky ****** tones, low input lag, clear motion and wide viewing angles. It has four full HDMI 2.1 ports that can output 4K 120Hz video on a PS5 or Xbox Series X (or 4K 144Hz on a PC). It follows the HGiG’s HDR guidelines and supports ALLM, the big three VRR formats and all the major HDR standards (Dolby Vision included). It also comes in a wide range of sizes, though the smallest two models are slightly less bright than the rest of the lineup. The caveat is that the C4 uses a more traditional WOLED panel, so it lags a bit behind other high-end sets like the Samsung S90D and Sony A95L, which can produce brighter highlights and generally richer colors thanks to their QD-OLED displays. The S90D seems particularly appealing since it usually sits around the same price as the C4 and offers nearly all of the same gaming-friendly features. However, Samsung is selling that TV with both QD-OLED and WOLED panels depending on your country and chosen size. The 55-, 65- and 75-inch models use the superior QD-OLED display in North America, but things are less straightforward elsewhere, and Samsung doesn’t make it easy to distinguish between the two panel types. Given that the C4 still looks great — especially in darker rooms — we have a hard time rewarding Samsung’s panel lottery with a recommendation. Like all Samsung TVs, the S90D also lacks support for Dolby Vision HDR. The Sony A95L, meanwhile, is another QD-OLED TV that’s received virtually universal praise, with many reviewers saying it tops any alternative from Samsung or LG. The issue is that it’s wildly expensive, with a 55-inch model priced more than $1,000 higher than the LG C4 as of this writing. It’s also limited to two HDMI 2.1 ports, one of which is the eARC port you may need to connect a soundbar or receiver. That makes it a little less convenient if you want to hook up multiple consoles at once. But if money is no object, it should be great. Pros Fantastic contrast with deep ****** tones Low input lag and clear motion Four HDMI 2.1 ports Available in sizes up to 83 inches Cons Not as bright or color-rich as top QD-OLED TVs Built-in speakers could be better $1,275 at Walmart Hisense Screen sizes: 55″, 65″, 75″, 85″ | Display type: QLED with mini-LED backlight (ADS Pro panel on 75″, VA panel on others) | Resolution: 4K | Maximum refresh rate: 144Hz | HDR formats: Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG | HDMI ports: 2x HDMI 2.1, 2x HDMI 2.0 | VRR: HDMI Forum VRR, FreeSync Premium Pro, G-Sync compatible | Smart OS: Google TV | Screen form: Flat | ALLM: Yes | TV tuner: ATSC 3.0 The TVs above are all pretty pricey. If you’re on more of a budget, the Hisense U7N, a QLED TV with mini LED backlighting, should be a strong value. It’s not a better gaming TV than some pricier LCD sets in a vacuum, as it only has two full HDMI 2.1 ports, it doesn’t have the absolute brightest panel and its image will wash out when viewed from an angle. You may need to tinker with the default picture to get the most out of it, too. But reviewers suggest that, for hundreds less, it’ll still look good in any lighting condition, with impressive brightness levels for the money, 4K 144Hz support, all the main HDR formats, VRR, ALLM and low input lag in its game mode. You’ll still sacrifice contrast compared to a good OLED TV, however, and motion won’t look quite as fast or smooth. It’s also worth noting that the 75-inch model uses a different panel type than the others, one that should improve its viewing angles but lessen its contrast. If you’re willing to pay more for a higher-end LED TV, the is the company’s step-up model for 2024. It should , colors and contrast, though say that it may have accuracy issues out of the box. And again, the OLED TVs above will generally look better so long as you don’t need something searingly bright. Other generally well-regarded LCD TVs in this range such as the — which has two more HDMI 2.1 ports but no Dolby Vision — and, especially, the top-of-the-line should offer powerful brightness levels and high-performance features as well, but they’re much more expensive. Unless you keep your TV in a particularly bright room and need to overcome glare above all else, most people are better off buying a good OLED TV for the same price (if not less). Pros Strong value Impressive brightness and contrast for the price 4K 144Hz support Cons Worse contrast and colors than OLED TVs Mediocre viewing angles Only two HDMI 2.1 ports $598 at Amazon Hisense Screen sizes: 55″, 65″, 75″, 85″ | Display type: QLED with mini-LED backlight (ADS Pro panel on 75″, VA panel on others) | Resolution: 4K | Maximum refresh rate: 60Hz (120Hz at 1080p or 1440p) | HDR formats: Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG | HDMI ports: 4x HDMI 2.0 | VRR: HDMI Forum VRR, FreeSync compatible, G-Sync compatible | Smart OS: Google TV | Screen form: Flat | ALLM: Yes | TV tuner: ATSC 1.0 On the lower end of the price spectrum, the Hisense U6N is one of the few budget-level TVs with quantum-dot color, a mini-LED backlight and full-array local dimming. Most reviews say this helps it deliver better contrast and color volume than most value-oriented models. ALLM and the major HDR standards are supported as well. Technically, it’s also a VRR display — but, like many cheaper TVs, the U6NK is limited to a 60Hz refresh rate in 4K, so that support only goes so far. You can drop the resolution to 1080p or 1440p and play at 120Hz, which is nice, but VRR won’t work in that case so you might see more screen tearing. There are no HDMI 2.1 ports either, and the TV’s brightness levels and motion handling will still be a clear step down from more expensive options. But at $450 or so for a 55-inch model as of this writing, all of that should be easier to overlook. The is another budget TV worth considering. It lacks any sort of local dimming or mini LEDs, so it should fall well short of the U6N in terms of contrast. However, it has the same ability to play in 120Hz at 1080p or 1440p, and unlike the Hisense model, its VRR range is wide enough to support that maximum refresh rate at the lower resolutions. That means it should be less vulnerable to screen tearing and other bits of choppiness with certain games. It’s also a couple hundred bucks cheaper than the U6N. 25. Albany’s best and brightest recognised in Australia Day Citizenship Awards at Binalup/Middleton Beach Festival Albany’s best and brightest recognised in Australia Day Citizenship Awards at Binalup/Middleton Beach Festival Outstanding members of the Albany community were recognised at Sunday’s annual citizen of the year awards with Noongar leaders, youth sport advocates, community event organisers and gardening groups among the winners. The City of Albany’s Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony and Community Citizen of the Year Awards were held as part of the Binalup/Middleton Beach Festival. Jennifer McRae won the 2025 citizen of the year honour for her long-time advocacy for forced adoption survivors and her work on government inquiries into the extent and impact of the forced adoption era in Australia. She said she was “blown away” to receive the prestigious award. “It’s a really important acknowledgement because a lot of the survivors of forced adoption, a lot of the time we are ignored, so to be recognised with this award, it’s not just for me, it’s for everyone who has been impacted by forced adoption practices,” Ms McRae said. “It’s for the whole community, that’s how I see it.” Young citizen of the year went to Felicity Ericsson for her work in the Albany hockey community as a player, umpire and coach encouraging people to be part of the hockey community and shaping the next generation of players. Steve Marshall was named senior citizen of the year for his work organising the city’s free Christmas luncheon, which has given food and community support to thousands of residents over the years. “This award is for all those people who believed in me over all the years, and also all of those who have donated time or money,” Mr Marshall said. “There’s just too many people to name, so this award is an amazing way to say thank you for all they’ve done.” The active citizenship award for a community group or event went to Two Rivers Garden Group for its work fundraising and supporting Albany Hospice through monthly gardening meetings. “We were amazed to have won, it’s unbelievable, and its lovely to be recognised by the City of Albany and to be part of this special day,” club coordinator Jo Smyth said. “We do it for those people, the staff, the families and the residents at Albany Hospice, and it’s so nice to give something back to the community.” The gathered crowd rose to a standing ovation as Menang elder Averil Dean received the Annette Knight Community Leadership Medal for her years of cultural leadership. She said it was a “wonderful feeling” to be recognised for her many years of hard work. “I do what’s in my heart, I never expected accolades or anything but it’s really nice to be recognised, and even better to be told that you’re appreciated in the community,” she said.
