Here’s How He Invested His Money Vince Vaughn’s Rental Real Estate Portfolio Has Allowed Him To Weather Hollywood. Here’s How He Invested His Money Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. If anyone appears to have ridden the highs and lows of Hollywood, emerging relatively unscathed, it’s Vince Vaughn. Part of the comedy Frat Pack and the star of classic movies such as “Wedding Crashers” and “Old School,” Vaughn was box office gold for a decade during the late 90s and early 2000s. Despite the inevitable career downturn, Vaughn has returned in recent years with new movies, TV shows, a cheery equanimity, a successful 15-year marriage and two teenage kids. He credits his real estate investments for his smooth ride in a notoriously turbulent arena. “I got involved in property young. I was fortunate to make money at my profession and I didn’t want to lose it,” he told business coach JT Foxx. “There were so many actors I knew who were intimidated. I thought I wanted tangible assets. First, I bought some gold. There’s no passive income off it, so I started to buy some small buildings that I could rent out. I knew the buildings would go up in price and I’d have some money coming in passively from it.” Don’t Miss: Vaughn explained that he invested deeply in the Florida real estate market, which helped boost his cash flow and equity. After 30 years in Hollywood, according to Celebrity Net Worth, Vince Vaughn is worth $75 million. It turns out real estate is in the Vaughn blood. His mother, Sharon, was a stockbroker and real estate agent who, according to “Bloomberg Wealth Manager,” was once ranked as one of the top money managers in America. According to People, Vaughn’s wife, Kayla Weber, was a residential real estate agent in Canada before meeting the actor. Between his wife and mother, Vaughn has plenty of sound advice to call on when making his real estate investments. In addition to owning rental properties, the actor, whose Bad Monkey series has just been renewed for a second season with Apple TV, was also highly active in buying and selling luxury Californian real estate. Here are some of his high-priced deals: Trending: If there was a new fund backed by Jeff Bezos offering a 7-9% target yield with monthly dividends would you invest in it? In 2006, he bought a 12,000-square-foot Chicago ********** from Playboy chief Hugh Hefner. He later split the properties, selling the 35th floor for $4.1 million and the 36th and 37th floors for $8.5 million. The town house was listed for rent at $9,500/month before the *****, according to Today. Story Continues In 2013, Vaughn paid $3.925 million for a 5,563-square-foot home in La Cañada Flintridge, California, selling it to DreamWorks Studios CEO Michael Wright for $4.8 million in 2013. Look for Vaughn to invest his considerable future earnings in real estate. He has a slew of projects lined up. The second season of Bad Monkey is being shot, which Vaughn is also executive producing. The highly anticipated Dodgeball 2 is also due for release in 2025, nearly two decades after the first. Other Vaughn projects in the pipeline include Male Doula, The Insane Laws, The Risk Agent, Nonnas and Broke – which Vaughn, thankfully, is not. In BLJ Bombones, you’ll leap through sinfully sweet stages and dodge spiders and insects that have taken over the confectionery. What makes it interesting, in my opinion, is the fact that you can apparently get doused and dusted with sugar along the way to get a quirky new look – as for whether or not this has any actual effect on platforming powers, I suppose we’ll just have to play it to find out. But if it doesn’t do anything but give you a literally and figuratively sweet new look, I guess that’s totally fine too! Based on the trailer, there’s also a stage where you can swim in chocolate while a bunch of ice-cream-looking enemies blast candy ****** at you – and who doesn’t want to swim in chocolate, really? All these come with a lovely soundtrack bopping retro beats in the background, so it feels like it’s going to be a lovely pick-me-up when days are particularly bleak. 6. *** farmers rally against inheritance tax *** farmers rally against inheritance tax Farmers are gathering at protests across the *** as they step up their campaign against government inheritance tax reforms – which they say would “decimate” the country’s agricultural sector. The National Farmers Union is staging a series of events on Saturday as part of a so-called national day of unity, with farmers bringing food, tractors and livestock to town centres across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The events follow National Farmers Union representatives handing a petition signed by 270,000 people to 10 Downing Street on Friday. It urged the government to ditch what they described as the “devastating family farm tax”. Rachel Hallos, a livestock farmer from the South Pennines and the vice president of the union, said she hoped the events will “raise awareness” of the impact of the planned reforms. “The inheritance tax changes from the budget will ultimately decimate what we’ve currently got in this country, and we’re really worried about it,” Hallos said. “It’s a little bit like a deck of cards – if you pull one of those cards out, the whole thing comes tumbling down.” In Northern Ireland, seven protest runs took place across six counties, organised by the Ulster Farmers Union, including two in County Down. Lines of tractors arrived at the site of the former Maze Prison bearing posters which read “save our family farms”. Union chief executive Wesley Aston said the new rules the government is proposing on inheritance tax will mean huge bills for the next generation of farmers, which will risk the viability of family farms in the future. A government spokesperson said it had a strong commitment to farmers citing a £5 billion ($A9.9 billion) investment in farming over the next two years – the largest budget for sustainable food production in the country’s history. “We are going further with reforms to boost profits for farmers by backing British produce and reforming planning rules on farms to support food production,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson said estates will pay a reduced effective inheritance tax rate of 20 per cent, rather than standard 40 per cent, and payments can be spread over 10 years, interest-free. “This is a fair and balanced approach,” the spokesperson said. 10. Are You On Track To Retire Richer Than 75% Of People? Here’s The Nest Egg You’ll Need To Be Considered A Wealthy Retiree Are You On Track To Retire Richer Than 75% Of People? Here’s The Nest Egg You’ll Need To Be Considered A Wealthy Retiree Are You On Track To Retire Richer Than 75% Of People? Here’s The Nest Egg You’ll Need To Be Considered A Wealthy Retiree Retirement savings – it’s not exactly dinner party conversation. Nobody’s asking their friends, “Hey, how much is in your 401(k)?” or “What’s your net worth percentile?” It’d be awkward, right? But let’s be honest, it’s something everyone thinks about. Are you saving enough? Too little? Are you even on the same planet as your peers? The truth is that most people are flying blind when it comes to knowing where they stand. But here’s the good news: you don’t need to be in the top 1% or some financial genius to set yourself up for retirement success. You just need to know the numbers that matter and make a plan. So, how much do you need to be considered a “wealthy” retiree? Don’t Miss: The Numbers: Where Do You Stand? According to Federal Reserve data analyzed by The Motley Fool, the top 10% of Americans hold a median retirement savings of $900,000. That’s the benchmark for the wealthiest retirees. But let’s get more realistic. Those in the 75th to 89.9th percentiles – still well above average – have median savings of $269,000. And here’s an interesting tidbit: even among the upper class, half haven’t hit the $1 million milestone in retirement savings. So, if you’ve been beating yourself up for not being a millionaire yet, take a breath. You’re not alone. How to Build Your Retirement Nest Egg If these numbers feel like a wake-up call, that’s okay. Starting now, the key is to focus on what you can do to boost your savings. Let’s break it down. 1. Maximize Your Retirement Accounts Whether it’s a 401(k), IRA or both, these accounts are your best friends regarding retirement savings. • Traditional 401(k) and IRAs reduce your taxable income now, meaning you’re paying less in taxes today while saving for tomorrow. • Roth 401(k) and Roth IRAs don’t offer tax breaks up front, but your retirement withdrawal will be completely tax-free. If your employer offers a 401(k) match, ensure you contribute enough to take full advantage. That’s free money and leaving it on the table is like walking away from a bonus. See Also: With 100+ historic trademark victories, this company holds IP for some of the highest-grossing characters in history. Now, they’ve propelled these icons into the future using next-gen patented AR, VR, and AI technology. There’s now a limited window for investors to claim shares at just $2/share with $980 minimum—but the clock is ticking. 2. Save a Consistent Percentage Story Continues Experts often recommend saving 10% to 15% of your income for retirement. Sounds simple, but it’s not always easy. If that percentage feels too high, start with what you can afford – say 5% – and increase it over time. Let’s say you earn $50,000 per year. Setting aside 10% means saving $5,000 annually. Over 30 years, with investment growth, that can snowball into a much larger sum. 3. Boost Your Income The more you earn, the more you can save – it’s as simple as that. Look for ways to increase your income: • Negotiate a raise at work. • Pursue a promotion or higher-paying role. • Explore side hustles or freelance work. Even a small increase in income can make a huge difference over the years. 4. Control Your Spending Saving more doesn’t just mean earning more; it also means spending less. Pay close attention to fixed costs – like housing, car payments and childcare. These expenses should ideally be no more than 60% of your income, leaving room for saving and discretionary spending. Small lifestyle tweaks can add up over time, like reducing dining out or cutting unused subscriptions. Trending: The average American couple has saved this much money for retirement — How do you compare? The ******* Picture Based on data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, here’s a fact that might surprise you: despite rising costs, median wealth has been growing across all age groups. Between 2019 and 2022, younger families (ages 20-39) saw their median wealth increase by 137%. Older families (ages 60-79) saw a 35% rise, reaching a median wealth of $404,000. But there’s still a big gap. Older families typically have far more wealth than younger ones. That’s the nature of the financial “life cycle” – you start with very little and (hopefully) accumulate more as you approach retirement. What does this mean for you? Don’t compare yourself to others. Instead, focus on steady progress. Saving for retirement is a long game and every small step counts. Being on track to retire richer than 75% of people isn’t about winning some imaginary contest – it’s about creating security and freedom for your future. Whether your goal is to hit the top 10% with a million-dollar nest egg or to feel confident knowing you’ve done your best, it starts with taking action. If you’re looking for extra guidance or a personalized plan to hit your goals, consider working with a financial advisor. Focus on planning smart, saving consistently and making steady progress – it’s not about being perfect. Your future self will thank you. 12. Lebanon ceasefire deal extended as initial deadline passes Lebanon ceasefire deal extended as initial deadline passes The US and Lebanon say the ceasefire deal with Israel – which had been due to expire on Sunday – has been extended until mid-February. Israel had kept troops deployed in Lebanon beyond the initial deadline, accusing the Lebanese government of not fully implementing its part of the deal, which required the removal of Hezbollah from the area. On Sunday, the Lebanese health ministry said Israeli soldiers killed 22 people and wounded 124 others who were trying to return to their homes in the country’s south. Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati says, following contact from the US, the truce will now remain in place until 18 February. The initial ceasefire plan, announced in late November, brought an end to 14 months of conflict between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah. Brokered by the US and France, the agreement gave Hezbollah 60 days to end its armed presence in southern Lebanon and required Israeli forces to withdraw over the same *******. Announcing the plan, then-US President Joe Biden said it was “designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities” between the two sides. But on Friday, with two days to go before the deadline, Israel said some soldiers would remain in the region as the ceasefire agreement was “yet to be fully enforced by the Lebanese state”. A White House statement on Sunday said the deadline has now been moved to 18 February, and that negotiations will begin for the return of Lebanese prisoners captured after 7 October 2023. Thousands of Lebanese residents have returned to towns and villages near the border since the deal was agreed, despite warnings that the region was still unsafe. On Sunday, the Lebanese health ministry said 22 people had been killed by Israeli soldiers in the area. The Israeli military said it had fired “warning shots in multiple areas”, without specifying if people had been hit, and apprehended several people it claimed posed an “imminent threat”. The longstanding conflict between Israel and Hezbollah – an Iranian-backed militant, political and social movement – escalated last September. This lead to an intense Israeli air campaign across Lebanon, a ground invasion of the country’s south, and the assassination of Hezbollah’s senior leaders. The offensive killed around 4,000 people in Lebanon – including many civilians – and led more than 1.2 million residents to be displaced. Israel’s stated goal was to allow the return of around 60,000 residents who had fled from communities in the country’s north because of Hezbollah’s attacks, and to remove the group from areas along the border. Hezbollah launched its campaign the day after the ****** attacks on southern Israel on 7 October 2023, saying it was acting in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. 14. Archaeologists find world’s oldest multi-component hunting poison in 7,000-year-old bone Archaeologists find world’s oldest multi-component hunting poison in 7,000-year-old bone Archaeologists in South Africa made a remarkable discovery on arrow blades lodged inside the femur of an antelope: the oldest mixed poison on record. The femur bone belonged to an antelope that hunters targeted long ago with three deadly arrows. Researchers have had the bone since 1983, but they only recently decided to examine it more closely. In a new paper, the rare and significant artifact from the painted rock shelter in Kruger Cave in South Africa possessed a much more exciting feature than just the ancient blades. Researchers believe that the femur’s contents could be a combination of at least two toxic plant ingredients. There’s also evidence of a third toxin. The “complex recipe,” as the study authors phrased it, provides a stunning portrait of how sophisticated medicine traditions were 7,000 years ago. The location and situation of Kruger Cave and bovid femur containing the bone arrowheads and poison / Bradfield, Duber, and Steenkamp.A poisonous mixture with three toxins Originating from a hunt that occurred 7,000 years ago, the femur might have fallen into researchers’ hands in 1983, but it remained unexplored until 2022. A recent excavation of Kruger Cave, a painted rock shelter and living heritage site in western Magaliesberg, South Africa, reopened the intriguing case. X-rays in the past showed researchers that three bone arrowheads had punctured the bone, leaving traces behind in the marrow cavity, the first study author, Justin Bradfield, explains in Science Alert. Advanced imaging techniques such as micro-CT enabled them to take thousands of X-rays to construct a 3D model of the femur. They had a hunch that they might detect toxic plant-based materials. After all, as the paper outlines, research understood that humans started using poisons 60-70,000 years ago. Tests confirmed that the “sediment-like matrix filling the marrow cavity” comprised toxic plant residues with a lethal final touch, according to Bradfield. The hunting poison revealed new details about a hunt After performing a chemical analysis, researchers detected the presence of digitoxin and strophanthidin. These are two commonly known toxic cardiac glycosides that affect the heart muscle. The addition of ricinoleic acid might reflect the “oxidative breakdown of the toxin lectin ricin,” as per Science Alert. Furthermore, these plant derivatives might have originated elsewhere as they weren’t native to the area surrounding Kruger Cave. Bradfield suspects they either traveled to gather their organic materials or acquired them through trade. Though not the oldest poison on record, the antelope’s marrow cavity holds the first composite mixture ever found in history. Nonetheless, using poison in the hunt marks an early technological innovation. Human ancestors affirmatively employed complex poisons for hunting. Bradfield and his colleagues emphasized the importance of their findings, noting, “To date, there have been several attempts to identify putative poisons on stone and bone arrowheads with varying degrees of confidence,” study authors state in the study. The research published in Science Direct demonstrates that archaeobotany and organic chemistry as disciplines can enrich and enhance the picture of the past. 17. My Top Quantum Computing Stock to Buy Right Now My Top Quantum Computing Stock to Buy Right Now The stock market roared higher last year, and some of the biggest gainers operate in one specific field: artificial intelligence (AI). The technology promises to revolutionize many industries — from healthcare to automobiles — with innovations such as AI-powered medical devices and autonomous driving systems. And AI already is helping companies gain in efficiency thanks to tools like AI agents and AI-powered robots. But AI isn’t the only transformative technology around. Another potentially game-changing area has been gaining attention in recent times: quantum computing. Many companies — from smaller players focusing on this technology alone to technology giants with vast businesses — are operating in this space. Quantum computing is stirring up excitement in the investment community because, like AI, it could offer companies a huge boost when it comes to innovation and efficiency. All of this is positive for the earnings growth and stock performance of quantum computing companies and their customers. So, it’s a great idea to get in early on this market-moving technology — and you can do so by investing in just one player today. Here’s my top quantum computing stock to buy right now. Image source: Getty Images. First, though, you might ask this question: What exactly is quantum computing? This technology relies on the principles of quantum mechanics, describing how subatomic particles move and interact in nature. Quantum computers use these ideas to compute probabilities and solve complex problems that would take classical computers much longer — we’re talking minutes for the quantum computer, versus thousands of years for the classical computer. Quantum computers can do this because they don’t operate in the same way as classical ones. Instead of using bits to store and process data, they use qubits. Bits can store only one value — a zero or a one. But qubits can store a zero, a one, or a combination of both at the same moment. This means when you combine qubits, they’ll scale exponentially, and this leads to processing speed. Scientists create qubits through the measuring of particles like photons or electrons. It’s clear this is a very complex process, and quantum computers still have a long way to go before they become a commonly used tool. Nvidia chief Jensen Huang recently said at CES that we’re still about 20 years away from “very useful” quantum computers. Still, companies are making exciting progress in this technology, and investors have rewarded this by piling into quantum computing stocks. For example, Rigetti Computing and Quantum Computing shares have soared more than 1,000% over the past year. Story Continues Now, let’s check out my favorite quantum computing stock to buy right now. Considering this technology itself could remain in the development stages for quite some time, I think it’s a great idea to buy shares of a company that is involved in quantum computing — but generates revenue and profit through another business today. This company is Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL). You probably know it best thanks to Google Search — the most popular search engine worldwide — and its entire Google platform. And advertising across Google makes up the lion’s share of Alphabet’s billion-dollar revenue. Google also has a cloud computing unit, Google Cloud, which has been delivering double-digit revenue growth. On top of this, Alphabet is showing itself to be a potential leader in quantum computing. Last month, the company introduced Willow, its quantum computing chip. Willow attracted the market’s attention because it reached two major milestones: The chip showed it can decrease errors exponentially as a system scales up using more qubits — generally in quantum computing, the problem has been that this sort of scale-up increases errors. China PMI surprises as factory activity contracts in January; December industrial profits jump China PMI surprises as factory activity contracts in January; December industrial profits jump Workers produce garments for export to overseas markets at Sihong Guoshun Garment Co., Ltd. in Weiying town, Sihong County, Suqian city, East China’s Jiangsu province, on January 23, 2025.. Costfoto | Nurphoto | Getty Images China’s factory activity in January unexpectedly contracted, reversing the expansionary momentum in the past three months, partly due to a slow season ahead of the Lunar New year. The official purchasing managers’ index for January came in at 49.1, data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Monday showed. The reading fell short of Reuters poll estimates of 50.1. PMI in December came in at 50.1, while in November it was 50.3. A PMI reading above the 50 threshold indicates expansion in activity, while one below that denotes contraction. The manufacturing PMI in January tends to be softer, as migrant workers return to hometowns ahead of the ******** New Year, which falls on Jan. 29, said Hui Shan, chief China economist at Goldman Sachs. China’s non-manufacturing PMI, which measures services and construction activity, fell to 50.2 in January, compared to 52.2 in the preceding month. Separately, China’s industrial profits jumped 11% in December from a year earlier. Corporate profits have been recovering from a sharp 27% year-on-year plunge in September — their steepest drop since March 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic. They had slumped 7.3% on year in November and 10% in October, as a slump in the real estate sector and bleak income prospects continued to weigh on consumer demand. Industrial profits are a key indicator of the financial health of factories, utilities and mines in China. The full-year industrial profits in 2024 fell 3.3% from the previous year, compared to a 4.7% drop year-on-year in the first 11 months of last year. The world’s second-largest economy met official annual growth target last year, expanding 5.0%, as a barrage of stimulus measures kicked in. Economists had pointed to the industrial output growth outpacing retail sales, underscoring the country’s supply-side strength while domestic demand remained weak. This is breaking news. 20. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese slams Grace Tame’s ‘f… Murdoch’ shirt as ‘disrespectful’ Prime Minister Anthony Albanese slams Grace Tame’s ‘f… Murdoch’ shirt as ‘disrespectful’ Anthony Albanese has slammed the T-shirt worn by former *********** of the Year Grace Tame at a morning tea with the prime minister as “disrespectful”, saying it was “clearly designed to get attention”. Speaking in Perth, Mr Albanese said he did not notice the provocative message — F… Murdoch — emblazoned on the shirt before shaking hands and posing for a photo with the controversial abuse survivor turned advocate. “It was clearly designed to get attention,” he said on Monday. “I don’t intend to add to that attention because I do think that it takes away from what the day should be about, which is the amazing people who are nominated as the Australians of the Year.” Ms Tame said Saturday’s morning tea at the Prime Minister’s Canberra residence ahead of the *********** of the Year announcement was a platform to make change and said she wore the shirt to “speak truth to power”. Mr Albanese defended posing for a photo with her, but said he “clearly” disagreed with the message. “Well, I clearly disagree. I want the debate to be respectful. And that’s a choice that she made,” he said. “We do have in this country, people are allowed to express themselves, but I thought it was disrespectful of the event and of the people for who the event was primarily for. “There was a ****** of more than, how many people in the ******, at least 60. “There was all the Australia Day nominees, there was all of the past Australians of the year, there was the Australia Day Council. People were just there, one by one, going through, being welcomed.” Earlier, asked why she was not “kicked out” of the venue, Mr Albanese said: “Look, I held a function, it is something that, in my view, took away from the people who were there, and my focus was simply on that,” he told ABC Radio. 21. Russia says its troops have captured a strategic town in eastern Ukraine Russia says its troops have captured a strategic town in eastern Ukraine KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia on Sunday claimed its troops had captured a strategically important town in eastern Ukraine as part of a grinding campaign to weaken Kyiv’s grip on the country’s industrial heartland, while uncertainty over the continued flow of U.S. funding has reportedly halted the work of some Ukrainian NGOs, including those helping war veterans. Russia’s Defense Ministry announced the fall of Velyka Novosilka, which had around 5,000 residents before the war, following a monthslong battle. Its statement could not be independently verified, and Ukraine claimed its troops had only strategically withdrawn from certain areas. But if confirmed, it would make Velyka Novosilka the first significant town to capitulate in 2025 under Moscow’s onslaught in the eastern Donetsk region against Ukraine’s weary and short-handed army. The war is set to reach its three-year milestone in February. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Ukrainian forces withdrew from certain parts of Velyka Novosilka to avoid encirclement, the 110th Separate Mechanized Brigade said in a statement on its official Telegram channel Sunday. The brigade is active in that patch of the frontline. Analysts have long predicted that it’s only a matter of time until Russian forces capture the settlement, which lies only 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the neighboring Dnipropetrovsk region. The brigade said though they have approximate parity with Russian forces in terms of artillery and drones, the Russians have a huge advantage in manpower. “Our units, using the weather conditions, skillfully withdrew from areas where there was a threat of encirclement. This does not mean that we have completely left the city, the fighting in Velyka Novosilka continues . All actions are aimed at minimizing our own losses and maximum damage to the enemy,” the statement said. The brigade said the withdrawal will make it topographically difficult for Russians to advance by making the river an obstacle for further advance. “The enemy (…) will have no peace, any movement is cut off by shells and drones,” the statement said. Russia captured the Donetsk cities of Avdiivka and Vuhledar last year after long and grueling battles. Those cities were largely leveled by Russian artillery, glide bombs and drones before they fell. Russian forces have also been trying for months to capture the key Donetsk strongholds of Pokrovsk and Chasiv Yar. Elsewhere, Ukrainian NGOs catering to the needs of war veterans and their families have claimed a suspension of U.S. funding is forcing them to halt their work, days after newly sworn in U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced he would pause foreign aid grants for 90 days. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later claimed that military aid to Ukraine would continue, but did not clarify whether humanitarian aid had been paused. Kyiv relies on the U.S. for 40% of its military needs. According to news reports, Ukrainian NGOs receiving funding from Washington this weekend began receiving “stop work” orders, requiring them to pause all projects and related travel. Veteran Hub, an NGO that provides legal and psychological support to war veterans and their families, was forced to halt operations of two of its three largest service units as a result, the organization said in its official Facebook page. It said the suspension has lead it to ask for public donations for the first time. “Since 2018, we have refrained from public fundraising because we believe that donations are primarily needed for the military. Today, we are forced to publicly ask for support for the first time,” the organization said. With the Trump administration questioning the future of U.S. aid to Ukraine, stressing the need to quickly broker a peace deal, both Moscow and Kyiv are seeking battlefield successes to strengthen their negotiating positions ahead of any prospective talks. For the past year, Russian forces have been waging an intense campaign to punch holes in Ukraine’s defenses in the eastern Donetsk region. The sustained and costly offensive has compelled Kyiv to give up a series of towns, villages and hamlets. 24. The Russian war economy is facing a ‘moment of truth’ as Putin’s dwindling cash reserves raise odds of a financial ******, expert says The Russian war economy is facing a ‘moment of truth’ as Putin’s dwindling cash reserves raise odds of a financial ******, expert says Nearly three years after Russia invaded Ukraine, Vladimir Putin’s economy is entering a critical phase as inflation, shortages, and shrinking cash reserves constrain his war effort soon, a Russia expert said. Russia’s economy is facing a “moment of truth” as high inflation, an ailing private sector, and critical shortages are poised to constrain Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine, according to economist and author Anders Åslund. Nearly three years after launching its invasion, Russia is headed for stagflation, meaning high inflation combined with minimal growth, he wrote in Project Syndicate on Jan. 14. While official statistics show inflation quickened to an annual pace of 9.5% in December from 8.9% in November, alternate measures suggest it’s far higher. For example, independent research firm ROMIR has calculated that prices for a basket of certain consumer goods jumped by 22% in September. “His war on Ukraine has caused both high and rising prices and labor shortages, because many workers have been mobilized or killed, while many others have fled the country,” Åslund, who wrote Russia’s Crony Capitalism: The Path from Market Economy to Kleptocracy, said. Meanwhile, defense spending is rising while the government’s ability to raise funds via tax hikes and bond offerings is limited, he added. That leaves Moscow’s oft-tapped National Wealth Fund, which has already seen liquid assets plunge to $31 billion from $117 billion before the war, to fill any gaps. Åslund estimated that what’s left in the fund is only enough to finance three-quarters of Russia’s budget deficit this year. On top of that, the ruble’s recent plunge is adding inflationary pressure, and exports are unlikely to offer much help, he said. Sanctions that are keeping Western technology out of Russia are weighing on businesses as well. “Strained by these factors, the Russian economy is approaching its moment of truth,” Åslund wrote. “Inflation will continue to rise in 2025, and people will get even angrier over higher food prices. Major bankruptcies are looming, and the Russian state cannot afford large bailouts. Business leaders are fiercely objecting to high interest rates, and the shortage of labor – and soldiers – is reaching a crisis stage.” The worst shortage, however, is budget cash as liquid reserves are on pace to run out this fall, he predicted. By then, budget cuts will be necessary, while the Kremlin may have to resort to the “Soviet sins” of price controls and rationing. Story Continues “As the risk of a financial ****** rises, Russia’s imperiled economy is about to pose serious constraints on Putin’s war,” he added. Åslund and other Russia watchers have previously said that the economy will be unable to sustain the war on Ukraine for much longer. For instance, Russia already can’t manufacture certain weapons at a high enough rate to replace battlefield losses and is dipping into Cold War-era inventories. That means Russia may not be able to wage war beyond late 2025, when it will begin running out of key weapons. But Alexandra Prokopenko, a fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center and former Russian central bank adviser, said economic challenges aren’t yet severe enough to force a quick end to the war. To be sure, the economy is struggling and Putin’s guns-and-butter strategy is unsustainable, she wrote in Foreign Affairs magazine on Tuesday. But the West is betting on false hopes. “For at least the next year, the Kremlin should be able to keep its overheating economy from exploding into a full-blown crisis,” Prokopenko said. “Putin will likely still have the resources to sustain his brutal campaign in Ukraine—and perhaps the incentive to wait out the West.” This story was originally featured on Fortune.com Source link #Russian #war #economy #facing #moment #truth #Putins #dwindling #cash #reserves #raise #odds #financial #****** #expert Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
