  6. More students able to get grant More students able to get grant Bethan Lewis Education and Family correspondent, BBC Wales News BBC Nia and Roxy receive the Education Maintenance Allowance which helps students with the costs of studying “It does motivate me to come to college because without it, it would be a struggle,” says 17-year-old Nia from Caerphilly. She is one of 16,000 sixth-form or college students in Wales who receive the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) – a total which is likely to increase from September. The Welsh government said the EMA’s household income threshold, which has been frozen since 2010, will go up, meaning an extra 3,500 students benefit. Head of Coleg y Cymoedd – which has campuses in south Wales – Jonathan Morgan, said economic disadvantage had a “huge” impact on education and the uplift was “a step in the right direction”. Nia, a student at the college in Nantgarw, Rhondda Cynon Taf, said getting the £80 payments every fortnight removed the stress of worrying about money “because I know I’m able to come in with the stuff I need”. “It does allow me to come to college with essentials that I need such as writing pens, notebooks… and revision resources,” she added. Because no-one at home is in work, the EMA sometimes helps out with food, she said. Nia added: “It does encourage me to keep coming to college so I can help out with the household and buy stuff that’s needed, such as bread.” Roxy, 16, also says the grant helps lift the “financial burden” at home in Trealaw in the Rhondda, where she lives with her aunt, uncle and twin brother. The allowance is paid directly to her bank account and she says feels “empowered” by it. “I spend it on food for college and studying materials,” she said. “I think it gives you more independence and a chance to sort yourself out and dictate what you want and what you’re going to get for yourself.” At Coleg y Cymoedd, they expect to see an increase in the proportion of students who can claim the grant The uplift to the household annual income threshold, under which students qualify for EMA, comes after a report for the Welsh government said the number of students claiming the benefit had been falling over several years. It said that 41% of the 16-to-18 year old student population were receiving the grant in 2015-16 but that was down to 15% by 2022-23. From the next academic year, the threshold for families with one dependant will go up from £20,817 to £23,400 and for households with two or more dependents it will go up from £23,077 to £25,974. Jonathan Morgan, principal of Coleg y Cymoedd, said raising the threshold would help more students come to college from September. “We’ve got a large proportion of learners who come from lower economic backgrounds”, he added. But at the same time he said many students face losing their free transport because of changes to council policies. He said there was “more work still to do” in addressing the costs facing college students but called the change to the EMA threshold “absolutely the right thing to do”. How do I claim EMA? EMA is a fortnightly payment of £80 to 16 to 18-year-olds who stay on in education after the end of compulsory school-leaving age. It is means tested and from September 2025 students will qualify if they live in a household where the annual income is £23,400 or less, if they are the only dependant, or up to £25,974 if there are other dependants. It can be claimed by students in sixth forms or further education colleges studying an academic or vocational course such as GCSEs, A-Levels, BTEC or basic skills courses. Your sixth form or college can help with the application process. In April 2023, the allowance went up from £30 to £40 a week. Minister for further and higher education, Vikki Howells, said she wanted to keep EMA eligibility rules under review Victoria Winckler from anti-poverty think tank the Bevan Foundation welcomed the change to threshold saying it had been “arguing long and hard for an uplift”. “This should be the first step as we think devolved grants and allowances should be regularly reviewed,” she added. Vikki Howells, minister for further and higher education, called the changes to the EMA “a really generous package” which she wanted to “keep under review annually”. Acknowledging that travel costs were a challenge for many young people she said it was an area where she was keen to see progress “to help learners to travel to their schools and colleges, to be able to afford to do that and have the infrastructure and that means that public transport is available as well”. 7. ‘Worst’ Man Utd team win again; more woe for Ange ‘Worst’ Man Utd team win again; more woe for Ange Manchester United have secured rare back-to-back wins as Lisandro Martinez’s second-half strike sank Fulham 1-0 at Craven Cottage. The Argentina defender fired the only goal of the Premier League game in the closing stages, via a deflection off Fulham’s Sasa Lukic, as United followed up their midweek Europa League win against Rangers with three points. It was only Ruben Amorim’s fourth victory in 12 Premier League matches since taking charge of United. And the back-to-back wins have come since Amorim declared last weekend his team was “the worst, maybe, in the history of Manchester United.” It was another blunt attacking display from United, who managed just one shot on target, but the valuable three points moved the Red Devils above Crystal Palace and up to 12th. United forward Rasmus Hojlund endured another ineffective match and was replaced by Joshua Zirkzee after 58 minutes, with Amorim’s side appearing to require more inspiration from skipper Fernandes to find a breakthrough. Fulham, who saw Joachim Andersen’s late header superbly cleared off the goal-line by United substitute Toby Collyer, have won one of their last five league games and sit 10th. Earlier, Leicester gave their hopes of avoiding relegation a major boost – and piled the pressure on Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou – by fighting back to win 2-1 in the capital. Brazil forward Richarlison opened the scoring for Spurs in the first half, but Jamie Vardy and Bilal El Khannouss struck for the Foxes in the space of four minutes straight after the restart to halt their side’s seven-game losing league run. Tottenham, who squandered a host of chances as they chased an equaliser, have won only one of their last 11 league matches and sit 15th in the table. West Ham defender Emerson’s second-half header earned Graham Potter’s side a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa. Jacob Ramsey fired Villa into an early lead and, after the Hammers struck a post through Carlos Soler’s effort, Emerson’s header got the visitors back on level terms midway through the second half. Villa had earlier been dealt a blow when England defender Tyrone Mings left the pitch in tears before half-time after sustaining a knee injury – less than three months after returning from anterior cruciate ligament surgery. Brentford secured just their second league win on the road this season as they beat London rivals Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park. Bryan Mbeumo gave Palace a second-half lead with a retaken penalty after Maxence Lacroix’s foul on Nathan Collins. Mbeumo’s initial spot-kick hit a post, but Palace skipper Marc Guehi was adjudged by VAR to have encroached in the area. Kevin Schade headed the Bees into a 2-0 lead and, although former Millwall forward Romain Esse pulled one back on his Palace debut, the visitors held on for their second victory in 10 league matches. 8. US House Republicans divided over how to pay for Trump’s tax cuts US House Republicans divided over how to pay for Trump’s tax cuts By David Morgan WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republicans who control the U.S. House of Representatives are trying to overcome internal differences on how to pay for President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax cuts, with hardline conservatives determined to reduce an annual federal deficit approaching $2 trillion. With a narrow 218-215 House majority, they need near-total unity as they prepare to vote within weeks on a fiscal 2025 budget resolution that will be a critical step toward passing Trump’s sprawling agenda of tax cuts, border and immigration reform, energy deregulation and increased military spending. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Ahead of a three-day policy retreat that kicks off in Miami on Monday, some worried openly that House Speaker Mike Johnson’s leadership team might balk at the spending cuts needed to offset the cost of Trump’s $6 trillion tax-cut agenda while also addressing the nation’s more than $36 trillion in debt. Republicans have vowed to extend Trump’s tax cuts from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, or TCJA, which are set to expire at the end of this year. The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimates that doing so would cost more than $4 trillion over ten years, while Trump campaign pledges to eliminate taxes on tips, overtime and Social Security benefits could cost another $1.8 trillion. Failure to reach agreement could trip up Republican lawmakers’ plan to pass Trump’s agenda by the end of May, using a maneuver to bypass Senate Democrats that will require almost all of the fractious majority to agree. “Most of us support the TCJA. I don’t think that’s the issue. We all want to support what President Trump is doing. But we also recognize the need to get our fiscal house in order,” said Representative Michael Cloud, a member of the hardline House Freedom Caucus. “We’ve got to have a course correction, and it’s got to be dramatic,” he told Reuters. Johnson said he hopes to finalize components of a single sprawling legislative package to fund Trump priorities. Republicans must also decide whether to include an increase in the federal government’s debt ceiling — which Congress must do later this year to avoid a devastating default — and disaster relief for Los Angeles communities devastated by wildfires. “There are a number of ideas on the table,” Johnson told reporters before lawmakers left Washington last week, saying his caucus aimed to reach agreement in Miami. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries blasted Republican plans as “a contract against America.” He warned: “It will hurt working families, hurt the middle class, hurt our children, hurt our seniors and hurt our veterans.” Jeffries also said the Republican agenda would undermine the Medicaid healthcare program for the poor, as well as government-subsidized healthcare for uninsured workers under the Affordable Care Act. COST OF TRUMP AGENDA Republicans say they face a major challenge finding enough spending cuts to cover the cost of the Trump agenda and worry privately that hardliners’ insistence on significant deficit reduction could harm their constituents by reducing Medicaid funding for hospitals and outlays for other community services. “This thing cannot be deficit neutral,” said Republican Representative Ralph Norman, adding that the package would need to reduce the deficit “to the tune of a big number.” Another potential roadblock: The rising U.S. deficit is weighing on the bond market, pushing the nation’s borrowing costs higher. A significant deepening of the deficit could add to those worries. ‘THIS IS AN EQUAL BODY’ The debate will test which is more powerful — Trump’s demands or hardliners’ will to hold to a traditional Republican goal of cutting the deficit. “The president said very clearly what he wants. Now the question is, what do we want? This is an equal body … We’re supposed to have different opinions. If we don’t, we’re in trouble, because we’re no longer a constitutional republic, said Representative Richard McCormick. The House Budget Committee has circulated a 50-page menu of proposals that includes trillions of dollars ranging from ideas widely supported in the party, such as repealing green energy tax credits, to the controversial, including the federal home mortgage interest deduction. A proposal to raise $1.9 trillion from a 10% tariff on imported goods, which Trump has proposed, also faces opposition from House and Senate conservatives. “I’m not in favor of raising taxes. Tariffs are simply a tax,” said Republican Senator Rand Paul, a leading fiscal hawk. Even as Republicans try to edge toward agreement, Representative Tim Burchett said he worries that up to $200 billion in proposed additional funding for the Pentagon could absorb savings that he would rather use to address the deficit. But he stopped short of saying that such an outcome would lead him to oppose the package. “If I see us trending in the right direction, that might be enough,” Burchett said. “But again, we’re lying to ourselves, and we’re lying to the public. We go home and say, we’re going to do these things. And then we come up here and wink and nod and sell the people down the river. And we go home and get reelected. It’s a crazy system.” (Reporting by David Morgan; Editing by Scott Malone and Nick Zieminski) Source link #House #Republicans #divided #pay #Trumps #tax #cuts Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  9. Perplexity Tiktok revised merger proposal Perplexity Tiktok revised merger proposal Photo illustration of TikTok app logo on a smartphone screen displayed with the American flag. Nurphoto | Nurphoto | Getty Images Perplexity AI on Sunday revised the merger proposal it had submitted to TikTok parent ByteDance. The proposal, which would create a new entity combining Perplexity and TikTok U.S., would now also allow for the U.S. government to own up to 50% of the new company upon a future IPO, CNBC has learned. A proposal document viewed by CNBC, which was shared with ByteDance and prospective new investors, detailed the creation of a new U.S. holding company, “NewCo.” The document proposes ByteDance contribute TikTok U.S., minus its core recommendation algorithm, in exchange for the company’s existing investors receiving equity in the new company. Perplexity AI would offer itself up in exchange for its own investors receiving a distribution of the NewCo equity. Money for the merger would come from “new third-party capital provider(s) (to be mutually agreed upon),” per the proposal document, which would provide capital for a “one-time dividend payment to ByteDance investors in exchange for simplified governance” and to help the new entity grow. Perplexity AI, the artificial intelligence search engine startup competing with OpenAI and Google, started 2024 with a roughly $500 million valuation and ended the year with a valuation of about $9 billion, after attracting increasing investor interest amid the generative AI ***** — as well as controversy over plagiarism accusations. Investors have viewed AI-assisted search as one of Google’s key risks, as it potentially changes the way consumers access information online. Last year, OpenAI, which started the generative AI craze in late 2022 with ChatGPT, introduced a search engine called SearchGPT. Google later launched “AI Overviews” in search, allowing users to see a quick summary of answers at the top of results. The proposed new structure would allow for most of ByteDance’s existing investors to retain their equity stakes and would bring more video to Perplexity, a source familiar with the situation told CNBC earlier this month. And although ByteDance has publicly implied it will not sell TikTok U.S., that’s part of why Perplexity AI believes it has a shot with its bid — since the deal would be a merger rather than a *****, the source added. Under the revised proposal, the U.S. government could own up to half of the new structure once it IPOs at least $300 billion, according to the source. A fair price is “well north of $50 billion” but the final number attached to the proposal will be decided, in part, by which of ByteDance’s existing shareholders want to remain part of the new entity and which want to cash out, according to the source. Though any potential transaction between Perplexity AI and ByteDance would likely take months to complete, President Donald Trump has so far temporarily restored TikTok in the U.S. and suggested plans that would involve an American stakeholder purchasing the company and then selling a 50% stake to the U.S. government. In a video posted to TikTok earlier this month, CEO Shou Zi Chew said, “I want to thank President Trump for his commitment to work with us to find a solution that keeps TikTok available in the United States.” Perplexity is one of multiple companies and individuals vying to be the one to purchase or merge with TikTok, which reportedly include Microsoft, Oracle and potentially Elon Musk. On Saturday, President Trump said he would likely have a decision on the app’s future in the U.S. in the next 30 days. 12. This is the most addictive app I’ve ever used This is the most addictive app I’ve ever used Every once in a while I come across a game that I find so wildly addictive that I start to question whether I should have started playing it in the first place. My first experience of this was when I was in my early 20s and the game was called Plane Control. All the game required was for you to land planes by adjusting their direction of travel as they approached the runway. As time went on, more and more planes started appearing, and you had to make sure none of them crashed. It was a game I just couldn’t put down. Fast forward 15 years and I’ve left Plane Control behind but now I’m addicted to a new game. It’s called Geometry Dash Lite and, as with most addictive games, the premise is simple. You are a square-shaped character with one simple aim: jump and fly your way through the levels while avoiding life-threatening danger. Homescreen heroes This is part of a regular series of articles exploring the apps that we couldn’t live without. Read them all here. This rhythm-based action platformer is particularly addictive because every time you ******, the game automatically restarts with your character traveling forward. (Image credit: Future) Geometry Dash Lite includes a range of levels that have names like Stereo Madness and Polargeist. All the levels are accessible without having to complete previous ones, although new features are added as you move through the levels. I would therefore recommend trying to complete each one before moving on to the next. Now that is easier said than done. The first, and easiest, level took me countless attempts to even get beyond the first few obstacles. The game is all about timing your jumps and I clearly wasn’t very good at it, especially when trying to land on and launch off small platforms. With no desire to be outdone and with the thought that my children would probably put me to shame, I persevered. But boy were there high levels of frustration. Maybe if I wasn’t so competitive, I would have given up much sooner. My only saving grace was the practice mode that is available on all levels. The feature lets you drop a checkpoint midway through a level and return to that point if you ****** rather than right back to the beginning. This helped me perfect my skills. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. (Image credit: Future) As well as high levels of game frustration and addictiveness, more frustrating is that the Lite version of Geometry Dash is peppered with ads. They’re not interesting ads either, just recommendations for apps that you’re unlikely to ever want. The ads appear after every few deaths and they’re a pain to skip. You must wait a certain amount of time before a skip button is even visible. Of course, all of this is purposeful, as the app developers are trying to force you into paying for the complete version. They seem to have got the balance between creating a super addictive game and serving up annoying ads just right. It’ll make you want to pay for the full version after only a few days. You can’t say I didn’t warn you. (Image credit: Future) The complete Geometry Dash game offers a larger selection of levels, a level editor to create custom levels, online features, and more unlockable content. There are also none of the annoying ads that are found in the Lite version. Geometry Dash Lite is available on both iOS and Android platforms, as well as on the web. As the Lite version acts as a trial for the full Geometry Dash game, it is completely free for all users. If you’d like to leave the Lite version behind and upgrade to the full alternative, that’ll cost you the small sum of $2.99 / £2.99. Download the Geometry Dash Lite app on iOS or Android. Then, while Belarusians were still voting, candidate Lukashenko gave a four-and-a-half hour press conference live on state TV. It was an opportunity to quiz him on the controversial vote which his critics have denounced as “a sham”. “What wretched question have you prepared for me?” he asked. “Like you always do.” “Good morning,” I replied. “Good morning, Steve.” “How can you call this a democratic election, when your main rivals are either in prison or in exile?” I asked. “Some are in prison, and some are in exile. But you are here!” said Lukashenko. “Everyone has the right to choose. That is democracy. Some chose prison, others chose exile. We never forced anyone out of the country.” In reality, it was the authorities’ brutal crackdown on protesters after the 2020 presidential election that led to Alexander Lukashenko’s staunchest opponents either being jailed or driven into political exile. Personal choice did not come into it. “You said recently ‘We mustn’t shut people’s mouths’ [silence people],” I reminded him. “But your rivals haven’t just been kept off the ballot. Some of them have been jailed. There are currently more than 1,200 political prisoners in Belarus. Isn’t it time to open the prison cells and release them? People like Maria Kolesnikova, Sergei Tikhanovsky…” “You keep going on about Maria to me. My God,” Lukashenko sighed. “OK, I’ll answer your question…Prison is for people who have opened their mouths too wide and who have broken the law. Don’t you have prisons in Britain and America?” “In any country, if you break the law, you must bear the consequences,” he continued. “The law is strict but it is the law. I didn’t invent it. You need to abide by it.” “You need to abide by the law,” I interjected. “But these people are in prison for criticising you.” “Ignorance of the law does not absolve you of responsibility before it.” The BBC’s Steve Rosenberg reports: “The leader of Belarus faces no serious challenge in this election” Although prominent opposition figures were not allowed to run, Alexander Lukashenko’s name was not the only one on the ballot. There were four other candidates. But they came across more like spoilers than serious challengers. “We spoke to some of the other candidates,” I told Lukashenko. “One of them, the ********** Party leader, openly supports you. Another is full of praise for you. It’s a strange election, isn’t it, with opponents like this…” “Steve, this is a whole new experience for you!” he replied, to laughter and applause from local journalists in the room. “That’s true,” I said. “I haven’t seen an election like this before.” “The Communists’ policy based on justice is the same policy that we’re promoting,” argued Lukashenko. “So why would they vote against me?” The European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has characterised this presidential election in Belarus as a “blatant affront to democracy”. Not that Alexander Lukashenko seems to care. “I swear to you,” he told me, “I couldn’t care less whether you recognise our election or whether you don’t. The most important thing for me is that the people of Belarus recognise it.” Source link #People #choose #jail #exile #Belarus #president #Lukashenko #tells #BBC Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  19. India’s Religare says US businessman makes competing offer for stake India’s Religare says US businessman makes competing offer for stake By Aditya Kalra NEW DELHI (Reuters) – India’s Religare Enterprises said a U.S. businessman has made a proposal to acquire a 26% stake in it, the latest twist in the battle for control of the financial services company which has rejected another bid as being priced too low. The Indian billionaire Burman family, which has founded and controls consumer goods conglomerate Dabur India, raised its stake in Religare to nearly 25% in September 2023, triggering a so-called open offer to buy more shares. Through the open offer process, which starts on Jan. 27, the Burmans plan to buy around 26% more of Religare to bolster their presence in India’s rapidly growing financial services sector, but Religare’s independent directors flagged this week the offer price of 235 rupees per share was too low. In a stock exchange disclosure late on Friday, Religare shared a letter from U.S. entrepreneur Digvijay “Danny” Gaekwad’s firm requesting permission from Indian market regulator SEBI to make an open offer of 275 rupees per share for the Indian company, a 17% premium to the current offer. A representative of the Burman family, Mohit Burman, and the market regulator SEBI did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Saturday. Florida-based Gaekwad did not immediately respond to a Reuters’ email seeking comment outside of normal U.S. business hours. Religare shares closed at 249.40 rupees on Friday, giving it a market value of 81.83 billion rupees ($949.30 million). The Burmans, if they win control of Religare, will find themselves pitted against other Indian billionaire families in the financial services business, including Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Financial Services and family-controlled Bajaj Finance. But the Burmans’ Religare bid has faced regulatory and legal challenges. Earlier this week, Religare disclosed that a ********* shareholder had approached the Delhi High Court, and was seeking to stop Burmans’ open offer bid. Legal papers show that the shareholder holds 500 shares in Religare, and the court on Tuesday issued a notice to Burmans and SEBI and said any subsequent action – such as an open offer – “shall be subject to the outcome” of the lawsuit. Crews attended the building, located near Eastwood Park in the city’s North End, at 10:16 a.m. for reports of a structure fire, Hamilton Fire Chief David Cunliffe told reporters on Sunday. Crews arrived to heavy smoke and flames that were visible from the building, Cunliffe said in news release Sunday. It was also reported that there were possibly two children still in the apartment. When firefighters got to the first floor of the building, they were met with “extreme heat, extreme smoke, extreme flame,” Cunliffe said. Hamilton Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe said two children and one adult died in a fire Sunday morning, Jan. 26, 2025. More than 60 firefighters were called to the scene on Brock Street, between John and Catharine streets north. Hamilton Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe said two children and one adult died in a fire Sunday morning, Jan. 26, 2025. More than 60 firefighters were called to the scene on Brock Street, between John and Catharine streets north. (Andrew Collins/CBC) Over 60 firefighters were at the scene once the alarm was upgraded to third grade, according to the release. “As firefighters raced in to initiate search and rescue operations they were met with heavy smoke in the stairwell, along with numerous people trying to evacuate,” Cunliffe said. Firefighters made multiple rescues and assisted numerous people out of the stairwell and hallways, but unfortunately two children and one adult died as a result of the fire, Cunliffe said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been impacted,” he said. Red Cross is assisting tenants who have been displaced by the fire. The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified due to the fire’s severity and casualties, Cunliffe said. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and it is unclear how extensive the damage was to the building, he said. 13 people taken to hospital Dave Thompson, superintendent with the Hamilton Paramedic Service, said there were 20 units on scene at the peak of the incident. Paramedics transported 13 people to hospital — eight in stable condition, four in serious condition, and one person who did not have vital signs, he said. Out of the 13 patients, the youngest is a one-month-old and the oldest a 77-year-old, Thompson said. He said paramedics assessed another four people at the scene who refused to be taken to hospital. Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath said she was “grateful for the bravery of our first responders,” and expressed condolences to those impacted in a social media post Sunday. “Absolutely devastating news,” she said in a post to X, formerly known as Twitter. :My heart goes out to the victims’ families.” Coun. Cameron Kroetsch, who represents Ward 2 where the building is located, also shares his condolences in a post to X. “This is devastating for the community, the families of those who perished in the fire, neighbours, and the fire fighters who engaged in rescue efforts,” he said. “My office will be available to any who need our help.” Burlington Street was closed for a few hours on Sunday between Hughson Street and Catherine Street as emergency services personnel responded to the fire. The road has since reopened. Source link #children #adult #dead #apartment #building #fire #Hamilton Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  24. Money expert says this is ‘the best financial move’ you can make right now Money expert says this is ‘the best financial move’ you can make right now The New Year has many people eager to make resolutions and changes in their lives — often related to money. And when a new year also coincides with the start of a new presidential administration, some folks may feel an even stronger inclination to take action to protect or grow their wealth after the inauguration. But “the best financial move I think you can make right now is to not make any money moves in haste,” money expert Suze Orman said. “Don’t make decisions out of fear, worry, or excitement about what might happen.” It can be tempting to think you have a good idea of what the stock market and economy might do over the next four years based on politics or financial headlines. But the fact is no one can predict the future. So if you’re trying to get ahead financially based on speculation, you probably won’t get very far. “The bottom line is that right now, we don’t know what may come out of Washington in 2025 that could impact your household’s financial security,” Ms Orman wrote. “And making financial decisions based on hunches is never a good idea.” Think long-term to make major money decisions The person sitting in the Oval Office can impact a number of factors that affect you financially. American presidents can influence tax code changes, health care reforms and consumer prices on imported goods. But even if you’re leaving the country, you’re unlikely to make any financial move that can completely insulate you. You’re better off thinking of big decisions — like moving investments around, buying big-ticket items like a car or a home or switching jobs — in terms of your own personal goals, not short-term news or predictions. January may happen to be the right time make a major financial move, but that should only be because you took your time to research and plan it that way. Avoid ending up with regrets Back in 2021, Robert Giametta and Christopher Luquer learned the hard way that buying a home on a financial hunch was not the best idea. They started their search in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic when mortgage rates were relatively low and home prices hadn’t skyrocketed yet. “I thought if we don’t buy a house now then we probably won’t be able to buy one in the future,” Mr Giametta recently told CNBC Make It. The couple bought their home in upstate New York in January 2021. By the next summer, they’d begun to regret their purchase. They were both working remotely and felt isolated from their friends. In the end, they realized they would have rather owned a home in a livelier area like Boston or Seattle — even if it would have come with a higher price tag. Though they regret the purchase, they did learn a valuable lesson in financial decision-making. They’re currently planning to finish renovating the house and eventually sell it. “It’s not going to be pleasant, but I think if we don’t take it slow on the next step, we’ll end up with another regret,” Mr Giametta said. Whether it’s investing in a home or recalibrating your stock portfolio, patience and a deep understanding of all the facts — regardless of your emotions — are key. “Take your time, stay informed, and focus on decisions grounded in facts and long-term goals,” Mr Orman wrote.
