Gary Glitter could be freed after parole review
Gary Glitter could be freed after parole review
Gary Glitter could potentially be released from prison after a parole review.
The disgraced 80-year-old singer – whose real name is Paul Gadd – was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2015 for ********* abusing three schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980.
It has now been confirmed the ***’s Parole Board will review Glitter’s case to assess his “risk” to the community.
“Parole Board decisions are solely focused on what risk a prisoner could represent to the public if released and whether that risk is manageable in the community,” a spokesperson for the board told MailOnline.
The former pop star was automatically released from jail in February 2023, but was recalled after breaching his licence conditions.
According to the outlet, the hearing could happen as soon as March 2025.
“A panel will carefully examine a huge range of evidence, including details of the original crime, and any evidence of behaviour change, as well as explore the harm done and impact the crime has had on the victims,” the spokesperson said.
“Members read and digest hundreds of pages of evidence and reports in the lead-up to an oral hearing.”
The hearing could include evidence from witnesses such as probation officers, psychiatrists and psychologists, and officials supervising Glitter, as well as victims’ personal statements.
“It is standard for the prisoner and witnesses to be questioned at length during the hearing which often lasts a full day or more. Parole reviews are undertaken thoroughly and with extreme care. Protecting the public is our number-one priority,” the spokesperson said.
In 2015, Glitter was convicted on one count of attempted *****, four counts of indecent assault and one count of ******* intercourse with a girl under the age of 13.
Justice officials released him in 2024 to let him carry out the remaining half of his sentence on probation, but he was jailed within weeks for violating the terms of his protection.
Glitter’s sentence is set to end in 2031.
At the time of sentencing in 2015, Judge Alistair McCreath said there was no evidence Glitter had atoned for his actions.
“I have read the victim impact statements of all three victims. It is clear, in their different ways, they were all profoundly affected by your abuse of them,” he said.
“You did all of them real and lasting damage. And you did so for no other reason than to obtain ******* gratification for yourself of a wholly improper kind.”

Scientist Testing Spider-Man-Style Web Shooters He Accidentally Made in Lab
Scientist Testing Spider-Man-Style Web Shooters He Accidentally Made in Lab
With Great Power
Tufts University biotech researcher Marco Lo Presti made an astonishing discovery while investigating how silk and dopamine allow mussels to stick to rocky surfaces.
“While using acetone to clean the glassware of this silk and dopamine substance,” he told Wired, “I noticed it was undergoing a transition into a solid format, into a web-looking material, into something that looked like a fiber.”
Lo Presti and his colleagues immediately got to work, investigating whether the sticky fibers could be turned into a “remote adhesive.”
The result is an astonishingly “Spider Man”-like silk that can be shot not unlike the superhero’s wrist-mounted web shooters, as detailed in a paper published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials last year.
While it won’t allow an adult person to swing from skyscraper to skyscraper any time soon, the results speak for themselves. Footage of the team’s experiments shows strands of the material being dripped onto a number of objects from several inches above, forming a solid connection in a matter of seconds and allowing the object to be carried away.
The researcher’s collaborator, Tufts engineering professor Fiorenzo Omenetto, recalled being caught off guard by the accidental discovery.
“You explore and you play and you sort of connect the dots,” he told Wired. “Part of the play that is very underestimated is where you say ‘Hey, wait a second, is this like a Spider-Man thing?’ And you brush it off at first, but a material that mimics superpowers is always a very, very good thing.”
Comes Great Responsibility
Intriguingly, Lo Presti explained that no spider has the ability to “shoot a stream of solution, which turns into a fiber and does the remote capturing of a distant object.”
In other words, the discovery appears to be entirely new, despite initially being inspired by nature.
The fibers also have an impressive tensile strength.
“We can now catch an object up to 30 or 35 centimeters away, and lift an object of around 15 to 20 grams,” Lo Presti told Wired.
But scaling it up could prove difficult.
“Everybody wants to know if we’re going to be able to swing from buildings,” Omenetto added, stopping short of hazarding a guess as to when or if that’s possible.
“I mean you could probably lift a very heavy object, but that’s one of the big questions — what can you lift? Can you remotely drag something?” he added. “Silk is very, very strong, it’s very tough, it can lift incredible weights but this is silk in its natural form whether it’s from the spider or the silkworm.”

‘Going to Take a Little Bit of Time’
‘Going to Take a Little Bit of Time’
CBS Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan grilled JD Vance on the economy as he failed to pick out an executive order that had an immediate effect on grocery prices.
The vice-president appeared to struggle before Brennan as she claimed most of the executive orders made by Donald Trump this week did not relate to the economy.
“You campaigned on lowering prices for consumers. We’ve seen all of these executive orders. Which one lowers prices?” Brennan asked in direct terms.
“We have done a lot, and there have been a number of executive orders that have already caused jobs to start coming back into our country, which is a core part of lowering prices,” Vance said without explaining what exactly the Trump administration had done in its first week.
“More capital investment, more job creation in our economy is one of the things that’s going to drive down prices for all consumers, but also raise wages so that people can afford to buy the things that they need,” he continued.
“So future prices aren’t going to come down?,” Brennan interrupted.
“Margaret, prices are going to come down, but it’s going to take a little bit of time, right?” Vance said. “The president has been president for all of five days. I think that in those five days, he’s accomplished more than Joe Biden did in four years. It’s been an incredible breakneck pace of activity. We’re going to work with Congress, we’re of course going to have more executive orders and we’re going to try. The way that your lower prices, is that you encourage more capital investment into our country.”
Brennan snapped back to hold Vance to account on Trump’s campaign trail, during which the price of eggs became a key election issue.
“But the price of eggs,” she said. “Those things- when do consumers actually get to touch and feel a difference in their lives? The flurry of executive orders, most of them weren’t about the economy.”
“Many of them were, though, Margaret,” Vance said.
But in direct conflict with Vance’s promises – and Brennan’s line of questioning – experts and leading economists have historically warned against the effects of grocery price decreases on a national economy.
Deflation was one of the main features of the Great Depression in the 1930s, one of the worst economic disasters in history which saw millions of people lose their jobs.
The chair of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, has repeatedly warned against low inflation rates and deflation, with the government agency setting its inflation rate aim at around 2%.
The latest data for America showed prices rising at a rate of around 2.9%.

Vicky Pattison’s deepfake sex tape, The Weeknd, Hard Truths, The Fall of Diddy, and The Apprentice: This week’s big releases
Getty Images
This week, reality star Vicky Pattison is warning viewers about the dangers of deepfake sex tapes in a new documentary – by releasing her own video online.
But that’s not all the week has in store.
A new album from The Weeknd is coming out, Hard Truths, starring Marianne Jean-Baptiste, hits the big screen, The Apprentice returns and there’s yet another documentary coming on the allegations around Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.
Read on for this week’s biggest releases…
Why Vicky Pattison created her own deepfake porn videoChannel 4
Deepfake porn – which usually combines a real person’s face with a fake, ********* explicit body – is becoming increasingly prevalent.
On Tuesday, a new Channel 4 documentary, Vicky Pattison: My Deepfake Sex Tape, aims to explore the issue and its effect on women and girls.
In it, the 37-year-old former Geordie Shore star creates her own deepfake porn video and releases it on social media.
The video appears to show Vicky engaging in a sex act with a man, first in a bra, and then topless.
She acknowledges to BBC News that releasing her own video might seem “counterintuitive”, but says she’s trying to highlight the urgency of the issue.
Pattison says it took a long time to work up the nerve to hit “post” on X, because she knew it would be “the point of no return”.
“What struck me most was how helpless I felt once it was released – it gave me a glimpse into the powerlessness victims experience,” she says.
“By putting myself in this position, even in a controlled and consensual way, I wanted to bring home just how vulnerable all of us are”.
Is this the end of The Weeknd?Getty Images
The Weeknd was the second most listened artist in the world on Spotify last year, after Taylor Swift
Whenever I think of The Weeknd, I always think about Blinding Lights – a song forever etched into my mind by TikTok dances and the dark days of the pandemic.
But his new album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, which is coming out on Friday, could be the last music he releases under his longtime alter ego.
Last year, he told W Magazine he wanted to “kill The Weeknd”, but would still make music.
Shortly afterwards, he reverted to his birth name Abel Tesfaye on his social media accounts.
So what will the final chapter of music by The Weeknd sound like? There’s a lot to look forward to – including guest appearances from rapper Playboi Carti and Brazilian singer Anitta.
Marianne Jean-Baptiste stars in Hard Truths
By Steven McIntosh, entertainment reporter

Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays ******, a woman who is constantly **********
Most people find January depressing. For me, it’s the best month of the year.
The film awards season is well under way by this point, which means cinemas are populated by higher-quality films than the popcorn blockbusters that dominate the summer.
One of the British contenders this year is Hard Truths, starring actress Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
It focuses on ******, an irritable woman who is constantly starting fights with everyone around her. Her perpetual misery can be funny to watch, but her bad mood is clearly taking a toll on her family. The word depression isn’t mentioned explicitly, but it’s clear ****** is struggling.
At a screening in October, I was struck by the impact Hard Truths had on the audience. Its relatively short 95-minute runtime disguises a film with significant depth and which punches well above its weight.
Speaking to BBC News in December, Jean-Baptiste reflected: “****** comes from a generation where you’re taught to just get on with things. It’s like the pre-Oprah generation, self-help – it’s before all that. You just went, ‘I feel rubbish, but I’ve got to do the laundry.’ You get up and you get on with it.”
Another Diddy docGetty Images
Sean “Diddy” Combs is one of the most successful musicians in hip-hop
It didn’t take long for the documentaries on Sean “Diddy” Combs to start rolling in.
The latest, The Fall of Diddy, comes out in the *** and Ireland on discovery+ on Tuesday.
The four-part series promises to “pull back the curtain” on the music mogul and features more than 30 interviews, including with those who accuse him of abuse.
Mr Combs was arrested and charged with sex trafficking and racketeering last year.
He has also received multiple lawsuits from several men and women.
Mr Combs has pleaded not guilty to all the accusations. His legal team has repeatedly asserted his innocence.
Who’s hired? The Apprentice is backBBC/Naked
Lord Sugar alongside his advisors Baroness Karren Brady and Tim Campbell
A pizza company owner and a hair transplant consultant walk into a boardroom…
Not the start of a bad joke, but something you can actually expect to see at the start of BBC One’s The Apprentice, which returns on Thursday.
There are 18 new candidates battling it out for the chance to win business tycoon Lord Sugar’s £250,000 investment and mentorship.
Get set for weeks of tasks, firings and cringe-inducing moments.
In previous series, the two teams have been split by gender for the early tasks. But this year, the teams will be mixed gender from the beginning.
The change was not prompted by the casting of a non-binary contestant. Instead, the BBC says it simply wants to freshen up the format.
But this format tweak does pre-emptively solve a potential casting issue for producers in future years.

Path of Exile 2 Could Learn Something From Diablo 4’s Accessibility Features
Path of Exile 2 Could Learn Something From Diablo 4’s Accessibility Features
It’s been more than a month since the release of Path of Exile 2, and the game has managed to maintain a large player base, all thanks to a number of updates and constant communication from the development team at Grinding Gear Games.
Path of Exile 2 is making waves in the gaming industry. (Image via Grinding Gear Games)
Right from Path of Exile 2′s release, it’s been projected as a Diablo 4 killer. While the game does an incredible job and wrecks the Blizzard title in many ways, it still has a long way to go, as it doesn’t even have some of the basic accessibility features that Diablo 4 players love.
Path of Exile 2 desperately needs some accessibility features from Diablo 4
⛶
⛶
The update focus on streamlining things for players, allowing for more focus on action
⛶
The praise doesn’t end for Diablo 4’s latest season updates
⛶
⛶
Let’s be honest here, Diablo 4 is one of the most complicated ARPG titles on the market. Seriously, it’s packed with a number of classes and systems, building diversity, and anyone can get puzzled or even lost while sitting in the game.
This is especially the case for low vision or blind gamers, who must have accessibility tools such as screen readers to help in their game. Fortunately, Blizzard has implemented a number of helpful features in Diablo 4 to meet the needs of gamers with vision impairments.
Gamers on Diablo 4‘s official subreddit have praised Blizzard’s decision to implement features such as audio navigation assist, audio cues for loot drop, and screen reader, proving that the company is truly ahead of the competition in some aspects at least.
Considering the fact that Blizzard is still supporting the game, we could see further improvements to the accessibility features.

It’s time for Grinding Gear Games to take note of these accessibility features and bring them to Path of Exile 2 as soon as possible. It’s disappointing to see that just because a few gamers have visual impairments, they can’t experience the fun this game brings to the table.
All is not going well for Path of Exile 2
Developers have opened up about the recent breaches. (Image via Grinding Gear Games)
While Path of Exile 2 might be a hit, it has suffered from a massive data breach that has left the entire community in shambles and questioning Grinding Gear Games.
The developer’s official Path of Exile 2 forum was updated with a brand-new notice that there was a data breach on the week of January 6th. Apparently, an account with admin privileges to the website that a developer owned was compromised.
This led to the user gaining access to tools that are typically utilized by the game’s customer support team. Right after this situation unfolded, Grinding Gear Games locked out the account and pushed a forced password reset for all other admin accounts.
An investigation later revealed that the Path of Exile account that was sabotaged was linked to an old Steam account that was utilized for testing, and that gave the user all the information to ******* the account.
Even though the Steam account didn’t contain any personal information or purchases linked to the developer, access to the developer account meant that it could end up affecting other accounts through the developer portal.
It’s not just the accessibility features; Grinding Gear Games seriously needs to work on improving its security features as well; otherwise, gamers wouldn’t feel safe playing the title at all.
With that said, would you like to see accessibility features in Path of Exile 2? Let us know in the comments below.

NASA and ESA share a breathtaking Hubble image of the Tarantula Nebula’s outer edge
NASA and ESA share a breathtaking Hubble image of the Tarantula Nebula’s outer edge
The Hubble Space Telescope is still trucking along more than 30 years after its launch, observing the universe and sending home images for us to marvel at. This week, NASA and ESA highlighted an image captured by Hubble of the highly productive Tarantula Nebula (officially named 30 Doradus) in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and it’s a sight to behold.
The Large Magellanic Cloud may be only 10-20% as massive as our Milky Way galaxy, but it boasts some of the most impressive star-forming regions in the nearby Universe! 1/3 pic.twitter.com/juulDT44mD
— HUBBLE (@HUBBLE_space) January 23, 2025
The Tarantula Nebula is “the largest and most productive star-forming region in the local universe,” with stars roughly 200 times as massive as the sun at its center, according to NASA. This Hubble view gives us a look at the outskirts of the nebula, revealing layers of colorful gas and stars. The Tarantula Nebula sits within the Large Magellanic Cloud, a nearby dwarf galaxy.
While the final result we see is filled with brilliant colors, Hubble’s images initially come back in grayscale. As has explained, “scientists can create a composite color image by taking exposures using different color filters on the telescope, assigning a color to each filter that corresponds to the wavelength of that filter, and combining the images.” The new image of the Tarantula Nebula doesn’t just represent visible light, but ultraviolet and infrared too. In such a case, colors are assigned to those wavelengths we can’t normally see.

EGCA well off the pace with just two wins in five matches at country week
EGCA well off the pace with just two wins in five matches at country week
Eastern Goldfields Cricket Association’s unsuccessful bid for the A-section trophy at the annual country week series in Perth last week was ultimately reflected by just two batters featuring among the division’s top-15.
The side’s five matches that yielded two victories produced some inconsistent batting and a lack of big partnerships.
However, Waqar ali Ahmed compiled 197 runs at 49.25 to be ranked second overall — behind Bunbury’s Bradman May (220 runs at 55.00).
EGCA captain Bevan Bennell was ranked sixth, with 150 runs at 50.00, but the batting contributions fell away drastically, with Sam Burge coming in at 15th with 102 runs at 34.00.
Last week’s top-six batters included Geraldton’s Zane Marwick (third; 185 runs at 46.25), Busselton-Margaret River’s Fraser Oates (fourth; 183 runs at 61.00) and Geraldton strokemaker Jay O’Brien (fifth; 153 runs at 38.25).
Hannans’ *** recruit, Harry Merritt-Blann, led EGCA bowlers with 10 wickets at 9.50 — fifth overall — and Graham Kennedy was 13th, with six wickets at 16.83.
EGCA manager Shane Robbins, whose own performances at country week during a decorated career included 16 wickets at 8.43 and a batting average of 33 at the 1999 series, said the team had under-performed — but he also called for a review of the match formats.
“Overall to finish the week with only two wins was a poor result, given the talent we had,” Robbins said.
“The last game (against Bunbury on Friday) was a Twenty20 on a synthetic (wicket) which happened to be wet.
“The game wasn’t taken seriously (and) Bunbury chased down 150 in 12 overs.
“The formatting of this game needs reviewing — I believe it should be 50 overs on turf, as sides aren’t taking it seriously.
“It used to be five 60-over games, plus a final if you made it.
“I’ll certainly be making my feelings felt to the EGCA and the (WA) Country Cricket Board.”
Geraldton were crowned 2025 champions after beating Albany in Friday’s A-section final — their first triumph in seven years.
The evenness of the regions is reflected in that the past 11 carnivals have produced six different winners, including the EGCA in 2020.
Among those six regions, Geraldton (2018; 2025), Bunbury (2022; 2023), Upper Great Southern (2015; 2017), Peel (2016; 2021), and Albany (2019; 2024) have each won two titles.
In the 105-year history of the Boan Cup, Goldfields have been crowned WA’s regional champions 18 times dating back to 1921.

There is absolutely no reason to upgrade from 40-series unless you are going up a tier or two. The 50-series is a complete dud and Nvidia tacked on the MFG due to lack of real improvements. They maxed out the die with more cuda, rt and tensor cores, and needed to up the power to have any gains. 50-series is on the same node as 40-series so there are no real improvements they can offer. You need to wait for the 3nm node to receive another 50-70% improvement over the 40-series.
Plus the MFG is not usable for displays under 144hz because you need a base fps between 60-75 to make it worth it (so you just need the 2x = normal FG from 40-series to hit your 120h-144hz display).
If you have VRR you can have a very smooth experience with anything between 60-144hz and you probably won’t even notice the drops, or if you do, you really won’t care.
The 50-series is for high refresh monitor users who game at 1440p resolution (or 4K if you go for the 5090) and aim at 240hz or more. For single player games, that is pretty much useless.
One thing you can do this gen, and it totally is not necessary but at least makes some more sense, is to upgrade from AM4 if you are still on that platform. Am planning to go to AM5 and 9800X3D and DDR5 and then again in two years upgrade to RTX6090. The reality is though, that I don’t really need a new CPU, but generally the 9800X3D is a better pairing with 4090 vs the 5800X3D I currently have.

One Subtle Hint Has Convinced Me Deadpool is Coming
One Subtle Hint Has Convinced Me Deadpool is Coming
While Marvel Rivals might be the crown jewel of the gaming world right now, it’s iconic how the game will forever remain incomplete as long as our very own Marvel Jesus, aka. Deadpool, is not included in the roster of heroes from which players can choose.
Marvel Rivals has a large roster of characters | Netease Games
However, there is no need for any outrage just yet, because it seems the creators of the game are just as excited for our friendly neighborhood regenerating anti-hero to drop in the game, even leaving behind a few clues for the same.
How Deadpool might be headed to Marvel Rivals soon
Wolverine has always been close to Deadpool in the Marvel Universe | Netease Games
It was not until the movie adaptation of our favorite Red-suited superhero came out that Deadpool became a household name for every pop culture enthusiast, and much of the credit goes to Ryan Reynolds.
On the game’s subreddit, a user showcased a significant clue about when Deadpool might appear in the game. They pointed out the close relationship between Deadpool and Wolverine, another Marvel hero who not only already features in the game but also starred alongside Deadpool in a film last year.
The user highlighted how Wolverine’s spray in Marvel Rivals comes in a broken heart shape with his artwork on it. The missing other half of the part obviously hints towards Deadpool, with the whole heart in two pieces gimmick being a major promotional piece used last year as a part of the aforementioned film’s promotion.
Deadpool and his possible abilities in Marvel Rivals
Here is what Deadpool’s kit might look like | Marvel Cinematic Universe
Deadpool, the fan-favorite Marvel anti-hero, is known for unpredictability and unique combat style. When he finally makes his way into the game, fans can expect his abilities to reflect his quirky personality and fighting skills.
His team-up abilities can revolve around not only Wolverine but also Spider-Man, as both have shown to be pretty close in the Marvel Comic Universe. We might also get to see a passive ability from Deadpool, allowing him to speedily regenerate when away from opponents given his speed healing.
Deadpool’s katanas are as iconic as his guns. If the developers decide to make him a duelist, then his melee-based ability could involve a flurry of sword strikes, perhaps with a bleed effect that deals damage over time to opponents.

Macron tells Netanyahu to honour Lebanon truce as death toll from Israeli fire rises
Macron tells Netanyahu to honour Lebanon truce as death toll from Israeli fire rises
French President Emmanuel Macron has pressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to adhere to the ceasefire agreement and withdraw troops from Lebanon as Israeli fire claims the lives of at least 22 people in the the south of the country.
French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to comply with the truce agreement and withdraw Israeli forces still stationed in Lebanon.
In a phone call, Macron stressed the importance of restoring Lebanon’s state authority nationwide and called for an immediate end to the Israeli presence beyond the agreed deadline.
Israeli army fire claimed the lives of 22 individuals in southern Lebanon on Sunday – including a Lebanese soldier – as civilians attempted to return home under the ceasefire deal.
The agreement, which took effect on 27 November, required Israeli forces to withdraw over a 60-day *******, ending Sunday.
However, Israel announced plans to extend its presence, citing Lebanon’s failure to fully implement the terms, leading to growing tensions and mutual accusations.
Sporadic violence
Lebanon’s health ministry reported that Israeli forces opened fire on civilians attempting to return to villages still under occupation.
The casualties included six women and 124 wounded individuals.
The Lebanese army also confirmed the death of one of its soldiers and another injury.
Despite the ceasefire largely holding since November, sporadic violence persists.

Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s biggest music label, and Swedish streaming giant Spotify have reached a new multi-year agreement for recorded music and music publishing, they said on Sunday.
The publishing agreement establishes a direct license between Spotify and UMG across Spotify’s current product portfolio in the U.S. and several other countries, they said in a statement.
“Artists, songwriters and consumers will benefit from new and evolving offers, new paid subscription tiers, bundling of music and non-music content, and a richer audio and visual content catalog,” the companies said.
The partnership will ensure constant innovation, making music subscriptions even more attractive to a broader worldwide audience, Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek said.
Spotify has laid off employees, pulled back podcasts and cut marketing spending over the past year to boost profitability. It has also raised prices of its U.S. plans to capitalize on demand for its premium products.

Belarus frees American woman from detention as strongman leader looks to extend 30-year rule
Belarus frees American woman from detention as strongman leader looks to extend 30-year rule
Belarus has “unilaterally” freed an American woman from detention, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Sunday, as the Kremlin-allied country held an orchestrated election poised to give strongman President Alexander Lukashenko yet another term on top of his three decades in power.
Rubio’s post on the X social network identified the U.S. citizen as Anastassia Nuhfer. It said she was detained during former President Joe Biden’s tenure, but did not specify when or why.
Rubio’s statement came following waves of prisoner releases by Lukashenko, often dubbed “Europe’s last dictator.” Belarus’ oldest rights group, Viasna, says that over 1,250 people remain in detention over their opposition to the authorities.

Lukashenko’s opponents, many of whom are imprisoned or exiled abroad by his unrelenting crackdown on dissent and free speech, have called Sunday’s election a sham. The last election in 2020 triggered months of mass protests unprecedented in Belarusian history.
The U.S. State Department said later on Sunday that Nuhfer was detained in early December 2024. It said that earlier this month, a consular officer from Washington was granted rare access to an American detainee in Belarus.
A former high-ranking Belarusian diplomat told AP that Nuhfer’s arrest was linked to the 2020 protests, although he did not give details. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, said that Lukashenko himself offered to free the U.S. citizen “as a gesture of goodwill,” while declining to release any Belarusian opposition and rights activists.
Nuhfer’s release took the public and even Belarusian activists by surprise. Her name hadn’t been publicly released and hadn’t featured on lists of political prisoners.
Pavel Sapelka of the Viasna rights group, said that he and his colleagues had been unaware of her arrest or its circumstances.
Lukashenko’s support for the war in Ukraine has led to the rupture of Belarus’ ties with the U.S. and the EU, ending his gamesmanship of using the West to try to win more subsidies from the Kremlin.
But Artyom Shraybman, a Belarus expert with the Carnegie Russia and Eurasia Center, predicted that Minsk could try to ease its total dependence on Russia after the election, by again seeking to reach out to the West.
“Lukashenko’s interim goal is to use the election to confirm his legitimacy and try to overcome his isolation in order to at least start a conversation with the West about easing sanctions,” Shraybman said.
It was unclear what, if any, concessions Minsk has requested in exchange for releasing the U.S. citizen.
