Penske extends reign as Porsche wins Daytona 24-hour Penske extends reign as Porsche wins Daytona 24-hour Roger Penske has started his 59th season in motorsports the same way he closed last year – as a champion. Porsche Penske Motorsport on Sunday won the Rolex 24 at Daytona for the second consecutive year, and third time overall, to continue the domination “The Captain” flexed all of last season. Penske opened 2024 by winning the most prestigious sports car race in North America, added a 20th victory in the Indianapolis 500, won a third consecutive NASCAR championship and his pair of Porsches won both the World Endurance Championship title and the IMSA crown. Now back at Daytona International Speedway for the Rolex, the same place and race where Team Penske debuted in 1966, Penske returned to victory lane. And, as he always does, the billionaire who turns 88 next month stayed awake and sat with the team on the timing stand for the entire 24 hours. His two cars dominated the twice-round-the-clock endurance race and finished first and third. Once attrition hit other entries in the top prototype class, the Porsches ran first and second for large portions of the race. It was the No.7 full-time IMSA entry that won, making it back-to-back victories for that car despite a different driver lineup. “What an incredible day for the entire Porsche Penske Motorsport organisation. Both of our Porsche 963s and the drivers showed great speed and reliability,” Penske said. “The crews performed flawlessly, which is a result of meticulous preparation by everyone on the team. Felipe Nasr won last year with Dane Cameron and Josef Newgarden, but Cameron was let go at the end of 2024 and Newgarden wasn’t part of this year’s Rolex lineup. So it was Nasr again, only this time he was paired with Nick Tandy, who will be his IMSA co-driver all season, and Laurens Vanthoor, Penske’s reigning WEC champion. All three drivers were in tears after the race. Nasr said it is Penske who pushes the team to achieve the excellence he demands. “The feeling is amazing, just to see how much energy he brings into the team. You get out of the car, he’s like: ‘How’s the car? How’s the handling?’ Like, he’s very interested in every detail,” Nasr said. Even though the No. 7 was so dominant — especially after sunrise on Sunday — the drivers were still challenged until the chequered flag. Penske’s No. 6 car took the lead with just under an hour to go, but Nasr bested Matt Campbell in a drag race through traffic to cycle back to the front with about 22 minutes remaining. Getting the win Sunday meant beating 60 other cars in a field of 235 drivers representing 31 countries. The lineups included 14 former Formula 1 drivers, including Nasr. Philippines suspends South China Sea survey after China’s ‘harassment’ Philippines suspends South China Sea survey after China’s ‘harassment’ MANILA (Reuters) -The Philippines said on Saturday it has suspended a scientific survey in the South China Sea after two of its fisheries vessels faced “harassment” and aggressive behaviour from China’s coast guard and navy. Manila and Beijing have had a series of escalating confrontations in disputed waters of the South China Sea. China claims almost all the strategic waterway – through which $3 trillion in commerce moves annually – overlapping sovereignty claims by the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. Two Philippine fisheries vessels, on their way on Friday to collect sand samples from Sandy Cay near Philippine-occupied Thitu island, encountered “aggressive manoeuvres” from three China Coast Guard ships, the Philippine Coast Guard said in a statement on Saturday. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. In its own statement, China Coast Guard said China has “indisputable sovereignty” over the Spratly Islands, including Sandy Cay – which China calls Tiexian Reef – and that it had intercepted two Philippine vessels and driven them away in accordance with law. China Coast Guard said the Philippine vessels had entered waters near Tiexian Reef without permission and attempted to “illegally” land on the reef to collect sand samples. The Philippine embassy in Beijing and the ******** embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to requests for comment. China deployed four small boats from its larger coast guard vessels to “harass” two rigid hull inflatable boats deployed by the fisheries bureau to transport personnel to Sandy Cay, said the Philippine Coast Guard, which supported the scientific mission. A ******** navy helicopter also hovered at an “unsafe altitude” over the water craft, it said. Survey operations were suspended “as a result of this continuous harassment and the disregard for safety exhibited by the ******** maritime forces,” the Philippine Coast Guard said. Manila and Beijing agreed during a round of talks on Jan. 16 to seek common ground and find ways to cooperate despite their disagreements over territorial claims in the South China Sea. An international arbitration tribunal ruled in 2016 that China’s claims, based on its historic maps, have no basis under international law, a decision Beijing does not recognise. Russia says it has captured strategic town in Ukraine Russia says it has captured strategic town in Ukraine Russia’s defence ministry says its troops have captured a strategically important town in eastern Ukraine. The ministry announced the fall of Velyka Novosilka, which had around 5000 residents before the war, following a months-long battle. Its statement could not be independently verified, and Ukraine claimed its troops had only strategically withdrawn from certain areas. If Russia’s claim is confirmed, it would make Velyka Novosilka the first significant town to capitulate in 2025 under Moscow’s onslaught in the eastern Donetsk region against Ukraine’s weary and short-handed army. The war is set to reach its three-year milestone in February. Ukrainian forces withdrew from certain parts of Velyka Novosilka to avoid encirclement, the 110th Separate Mechanised Brigade said in a statement on its official Telegram channel on Sunday. Analysts have long predicted that it’s only a matter of time until Russian forces capture the settlement, which lies only 15 kilometres from the neighbouring Dnipropetrovsk region. The brigade said though they have approximate parity with Russian forces in terms of artillery and drones, the Russians have a huge advantage in manpower. “Our units, using the weather conditions, skilfully withdrew from areas where there was a threat of encirclement,” the Ukrainian brigade said. “This does not mean that we have completely left the city, the fighting in Velyka Novosilka continues. All actions are aimed at minimising our own losses and maximum damage to the enemy.” The brigade said the withdrawal will make it topographically difficult for Russians to advance by making the river an obstacle for further advance. “The enemy … will have no peace, any movement is cut off by shells and drones,” the statement said. Russia captured the Donetsk cities of Avdiivka and Vuhledar in 2024 after long and gruelling battles. Those cities were largely levelled by Russian artillery, glide bombs and drones before they fell. Russian forces have also been trying for months to capture the key Donetsk strongholds of Pokrovsk and Chasiv Yar. Elsewhere, Ukrainian NGOs catering to the needs of war veterans and their families have claimed a suspension of US funding is forcing them to halt their work, days after newly sworn-in US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced he would pause foreign aid grants for 90 days. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy later said military aid to Ukraine would continue, but did not clarify whether humanitarian aid had been paused. Kyiv relies on the US for 40 per cent of its military needs. According to news reports, Ukrainian NGOs receiving funding from Washington this weekend began receiving “stop work” orders, requiring them to pause all projects and related travel. Veteran Hub, an NGO that provides legal and psychological support to war veterans and their families, was forced to halt operations of two of its three largest service units as a result, the organisation said in its official Facebook page. It said the suspension has led it to ask for public donations for the first time. “Since 2018, we have refrained from public fundraising because we believe that donations are primarily needed for the military. Today, we are forced to publicly ask for support for the first time,” the organisation said. With the Trump administration questioning the future of US aid to Ukraine, stressing the need to quickly broker a peace deal, both Moscow and Kyiv are seeking battlefield successes to strengthen their negotiating positions ahead of any prospective talks. For the past year, Russian forces have been waging an intense campaign to punch holes in Ukraine’s defences in the eastern Donetsk region. The sustained and costly offensive has compelled Kyiv to give up a series of towns, villages and hamlets. Increasing Jonah crab numbers a problem for lobster fishermen in parts of Nova Scotia Increasing Jonah crab numbers a problem for lobster fishermen in parts of Nova Scotia A burgeoning Jonah crab population is proving a challenge for some Nova Scotia lobster fishermen. Dan Fleck, executive director of the Brazil Rock 33/34 Lobster Association, says the crabs are having a significant impact on the lobster catch in certain areas, particularly in lobster fishing area 34, which stretches from Yarmouth to the Bay of Fundy. Fleck told CBC Radio’s Information Morning Nova Scotia on Friday that the crabs are a primary food source for lobsters, and the lobsters may be feeding on them rather than the bait in traps, resulting in smaller catches. He said fishermen in some areas are reporting a drop of 20 to 25 per cent in their lobster catches. Jonah crabs are a valuable bycatch in lobster fishing area 34 and can be kept for use as bait or for ***** if they measure at least 130 millimetres, Fleck said. But the Department of Fisheries and Oceans does not allow them to be retained in neighbouring LFA 33, though Fleck said he didn’t know why the rules differ in the two fishing areas. CBC has emailed DFO for an explanation and is awaiting a response. Fishermen in LFA 33 asked three years ago for permission to retain their Jonah crab bycatch, but Fleck said it’s his understanding DFO is still researching the matter. He said the presence of Jonah crabs has become especially pronounced this season. “There are places there where they’re just opening the lobster traps and dumping the Jonah crab out because they’re three-quarters full or full of nothing but Jonah crab.” Potential for commercial fishery While the reasons for the population increase are unclear, Fleck said he received a report from experts in Maine that indicated the Jonah crab population tends to be cyclical, growing in number before suddenly dropping. Fleck said there is potential for a commercial Jonah crab fishery, particularly if facilities were set up to process them. He noted the crabs fetch far less than lobster — about 80 cents per pound compared to $15 a pound for lobster. Fleck said the infrastructure already exists to handle a new crab market. “We’ve had lobster plants that have closed because they might not have had enough lobster to process in the last number of years and I’m talking about throughout Atlantic Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I.,” he said. “I believe that the facilities are there, the workforce is there, the technology and the know-how is there and I think we could make a run of it.” MORE TOP STORIES Source link #Increasing #Jonah #crab #numbers #problem #lobster #fishermen #parts #Nova #Scotia Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Toddler, 2, rushed to hospital after dingo attack on K’gari Toddler, 2, rushed to hospital after dingo attack on K’gari A toddler has been rushed to hospital after she was bitten by a dingo on Queensland’s Fraser Island in the third reported attack in as many days. Emergency services were called to K’gari shortly after 1pm on Sunday after reports a two-year-old girl had been bitten on the leg at Lake McKenzie. Park rangers provided first aid to the girl who encountered the dingo in the carpark at Boorangaroo, before she was later flown to Hervey Bay Hospital. A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said paramedics had been called to meet the child at a resort on the island and that they were in a stable condition. It comes after a four-year-old girl was earlier bitten by a dingo when it reportedly charged at her and her 12-year-old sibling in shallow waters at Boorangaroo. Camera IconA toddler has been rushed to hospital after she was bitten by a dingo. Credit: istock A separate earlier attack by a dingo on a woman trying to stop the animal taking her bag was also reported to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service on Sunday. QPWS said in a statement that it was investigating the multiple incidents to determine next steps, with travellers to the island being urged to look out for dingoes. Senior Ranger Dr Linda Behrendorff said visitors needed to remember the importance of carrying a dingo stick while on the busy island and keeping children close. “Some dingoes will target children because they are seen as the weaker links of the pack. This is why it is so important to keep children within arm’s reach,” she said. “We have increased our ranger patrols during this busy long weekend *******, but urge people to remain vigilant, particularly parents with young children. Camera IconThe incident occurred on K’gari, formerly Fraser Island. Credit: Supplied “Visitors must not be complacent. People need to understand their risk when travelling to K’gari. Our message is simple: Be dingo-safe!” An alert on the QPWS website urged holiday-makers to be aware of an expected increase in “dingo-human interactions”, especially involving juvenile animals.“This is a particularly important time for juvenile wongari (dingoes) to test their strength, learn essential survival skills. and to avoid habituation towards people,” it said, “Juveniles will quickly learn bad habits such as stealing food around camp sites instead of learning natural hunting skills.” Juveniles dingoes, or wongari, are often learning pack rules and can be aggressive to gain dominance, whereas young animals may try to dominate people, namely children. NASA and ESA share a breathtaking Hubble image of the Tarantula Nebula’s outer edge NASA and ESA share a breathtaking Hubble image of the Tarantula Nebula’s outer edge Yahoo is using AI to generate takeaways from this article. This means the info may not always match what’s in the article. Reporting mistakes helps us improve the experience.Generate Key Takeaways The Hubble Space Telescope is still trucking along more than 30 years after its launch, observing the universe and sending home images for us to marvel at. This week, NASA and ESA highlighted an image captured by Hubble of the highly productive Tarantula Nebula (officially named 30 Doradus) in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and it’s a sight to behold. The Tarantula Nebula is “the largest and most productive star-forming region in the local universe,” with stars roughly 200 times as massive as the sun at its center, according to NASA. This Hubble view gives us a look at the outskirts of the nebula, revealing layers of colorful gas and stars. The Tarantula Nebula sits within the Large Magellanic Cloud, a nearby dwarf galaxy. While the final result we see is filled with brilliant colors, Hubble’s images initially come back in grayscale. As NASA has explained, “scientists can create a composite color image by taking exposures using different color filters on the telescope, assigning a color to each filter that corresponds to the wavelength of that filter, and combining the images.” The new image of the Tarantula Nebula doesn’t just represent visible light, but ultraviolet and infrared too. In such a case, colors are assigned to those wavelengths we can’t normally see. Sam Kerr celebrates with Chelsea after key WSL win Sam Kerr celebrates with Chelsea after key WSL win Sam Kerr may still be itching to get back into action with Chelsea after her injury woes, but the Matildas captain was in celebratory mood with her teammates at Stamford Bridge as she embraced them for the win that may have cemented another Women’s Super League crown. It may only be January, but the unbeaten champions’ 1-0 win over big London rivals Arsenal, complete with their three Matildas, still had the feel of a defining moment in the title race as they moved seven points clear in the hunt for a sixth-straight English title. Kerr, who’s been sidelined since last January when she suffered the ACL injury that forced her to miss the Olympics, hopes to return to playing next month or in March. But it was clear just how key she felt this victory was as she came onto the pitch to join in the boisterous celebrations and hug Guro Reiten, her Norwegian teammate who put away the 84th minute penalty that won the day after Lauren James had been brought down in the box. It was the first defeat for Arsenal’s new manager Renee Slegers and a chastening one which, following a second-half second yellow for Katie McCabe for dissent, leaves them 10 points adrift of the Blues in fourth, their championship hopes buried. There was also bad news for one of the Gunners’ trio of Matildas as Caitlin Foord had to come off injured just before halftime. Slegers explained Foord “had some problems with a muscle” earlier in the week and had begun to feel problems. “She said somebody else should come on as she couldn’t give 100 per cent,” added the manager. But it was a huge day for Chelsea, as they celebrated their biggest ever WSL crowd at Stamford Bridge of 34,302, while also introducing their new world-record signing, American defender Naomi Girma, who’s being hailed in the US as the first million-dollar woman footballer. Her appearance was just another sign for Kerr of what a changed Chelsea landscape she’ll be coming back into as they’ve clearly managed to thrive all season with a bunch of new luminaries and without their striking totem. Indeed, all the talk at Stamford Bridge was of whether Sonia Bompastor’s team can go the whole season unbeaten in all competitions after their 11th win in 12 WSL matches. “We’ve never clinched the Champions League. We’ve got five league titles in a row but going unbeaten would be unbelievable. We’re on a good road to doing that,” said their England international Lucy Bronze. Manchester United moved second in the table after their 3-0 win over Dario Vidosic’s Brighton, who stay fifth, while Tottenham’s Olivia Holdt scored a brilliant stoppage-time winner from a free-kick on her debut to earn a 3-2 victory at Crystal Palace. Leicester came from a goal down to boost their survival hopes with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool, while Katrina Gorry’s West Ham leapfrogged Everton with a 2-0 victory. Red Dead Redemption 2 Hits New Concurrent Record on Steam Thanks to $15 ***** Red Dead Redemption 2 Hits New Concurrent Record on Steam Thanks to $15 ***** Red Dead Redemption 2 has topped a new record on Steam thanks to Rockstar Games’ *****, where the game is just $15. At the time of writing, Red Dead Redemption 2 currently sits with a peak concurrent player count of 86,717 according to SteamDB, topping its previous record of 77,655 in November 2023. Its success comes from the recent Rockstar Games Steam *****, where you can save up to 80% off on Rockstar Games. Red Dead Redemption 2 seems to be one of the better deals at a 75% discount and for a game considered as a masterpiece (and still very much holds up today, may I add). Red Dead Redemption 2 first released in October 2018 on consoles, and released one year later for PC on November 5, 2019. The western-themed action-adventure would go on to win over 175 game awards and by June 2024 has sold over 67 million units worldwide. As for what’s next with Rockstar Games, everyone is waiting for an update on the highly anticipated GTA 6, which will undoubtedly be The Game of the Year, no matter which year it launches. At the time of writing, the game is still slated to launch in 2025, but Rockstar Games’ lack of update has understandably got gamers, and the industry as a whole, wondering if a delay is imminent. Its delay and lack of updates even resulted in one developer launching ‘Grand Taking Ages’ on Steam as a parody. Will you be picking up Red Dead Redemption 2 for just $15? Video adds to scrutiny of Edison tower as possible site of origin of Eaton fire Video adds to scrutiny of Edison tower as possible site of origin of Eaton fire A video offers new evidence suggesting the massive Eaton fire may have been ignited at a Southern California Edison transmission tower just moments after flashes of blue and white light flared near the electrical equipment. Over the last few weeks, residents who live near the line have shared videos and photos of large flames at the base of the tower in Eaton Canyon just as the fire was getting started after 6 p.m. on Jan. 7. Those residents told The Times they were convinced that is how the fire — which killed 17 people and destroyed more than 9,000 structures — was sparked. On Sunday, one of the law firms suing Edison, Edelson PC, released an edited video they said appears to show blue arcing in the canyon. The video, taken less than a mile from the suspected ignition point of the fire, shows the strong winds whipping through the area, and in the distance light flashing on the dark hillside. The lights flash suddenly. Attorneys for Edelson PC, allege the video shows arcing, and sparks falling onto the dry hillside. A few minutes after the flashes of light, the hillside begins to burn. A spokesperson for Edison did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding this new video. Edison officials have said they do not believe their electrical equipment was responsible for the fire, and that early inspections of the equipment showed no signs of arcing or power anomalies. Investigators with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection have declined to comment on their probe. But a Cal Fire investigator told The Times on Jan. 11 that the area around the transmission line was closed off because of investigation “into the start of the Eaton fire.” An official cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The attorney said the video, which was first reported earlier Sunday by the New York Times, adds to the evidence pointing to the transmission tower. “This is the clearest and most damning evidence yet — real-time video from a gas station security camera showing Southern California Edison’s power lines igniting the fire,” said Jay Edelson, founder of the law firm Edelson PC, in a statement. “It’s only by sheer luck this footage exists.” The Eaton fire was fueled by intense winds that pushed flames from Eaton Canyon west into neighborhoods across Altadena, flattening larger swaths of the community. In a statement, Edison had previously said that distribution lines immediately west of Eaton Canyon were de-energized well before the fire started. However, the utility company also has transmission lines on the east side of the canyon that remained powered. The CEO of Southern California Edison told The Times earlier this month that winds were not strong enough to merit de-energizing a powerful electrical transmission line. Steven Powell said that, typically, winds would have to be 60 to 80 mph for the company to consider the de-energization of transmission lines, adding that the readings Edison saw were lower than that. The National Weather Service recorded wind gusts just before the fire started of 59 mph at Edison’s Eaton Canyon monitoring site, which is south of the transmission line at the end of Eaton Canyon Park. Higher gusts were recorded at that site before and afterward, according to weather service data: 63 mph at 2:20 p.m. and 70 mph at 9:30 p.m. It’s unclear what the wind readings were at the tower, which is in the hills of the canyon. Last week, Edison notified attorneys suing the company that an encampment was found about 300 yards downhill from the suspected ignition point. Attorneys suing the company told The Times that the distance from the suspected ignition point made that an unlikely cause for the fire. At least 20 lawsuits have been filed against the utility company, accusing it of sparking the fire that has burned more than 14,000 acres, destroyed 9,418 structures and killed 17 people. With thousands of homes destroyed, the cost of the recent fires is believed to be in the billions, raising the stakes as fire officials, Edison, attorneys and residents look to find out what sparked the blaze. Much of the cost could be absorbed by the state’s Wildfire Fund, but could prove to still be costly if it was sparked by the utility’s electrical equipment. Attorneys suing the company have asked a judge to order the company to preserve data and equipment. Last week, a judge approved a temporary restraining order, telling Edison to preserve evidence and equipment near the suspected origin of the fire, and in a 1-square mile area in eastern Altadena. Edison attorneys opposed the motion in court filings, arguing there was no need for an order because the company had already been preserving evidence and equipment. Edison was also documenting repairs and equipment replacement in a “preservation zone” with photos and videos. Attorneys suing the company said they have asked Edison to lower the wires from the transmission towers over Eaton Canyon. Alexander Robertson, whose firm Robertson & Associates has filed suit against Edison, said his firm has requested to inspect the wires because the aluminum strands can be examined for damage, pointing to arcing. Robertson said Edison attorneys told him arrangements to lower the wires could take months, which he called “unacceptable.” Sign up for Essential California for news, features and recommendations from the L.A. Trump Zeroes in on Country to Dump Migrants From All Over
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Trump Zeroes in on Country to Dump Migrants From All Over Trump Zeroes in on Country to Dump Migrants From All Over President Donald Trump seems to have finally found a country that won’t rebuff his plan to send it hordes of undocumented immigrants who don’t hail from that nation. The Trump administration is working on a plan with El Salvador that would allow the Latin American country to accept immigrants from the U.S. even if they are not El Salvadorian, according to CBS News. The plan would designate El Salvador as a “Safe Third Country” as part of the agreement, pushing the migrants to seek asylum there instead of the U.S. The move would reinstate an agreement the two countries brokered during Trump’s first term, which never went into effect and was terminated by President Joe Biden. It would be the first such agreement struck under Trump’s second term, coming weeks after multiple countries rebuffed his attempt to negotiate similar deals. The U.S. currently has a “Safe Third Country” agreement with Canada. The deal stems from a close relationship between Trump and Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele, who spoke last week about their quest to “stop together to stop ******** immigration and crack down on transnational gangs like Tren de Aragua,” a group Trump moved to declare a terrorist organization last week. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also set to visit El Salvador next month as part of a trip through Latin America. The Trump administration has vowed to deport millions of undocumented immigrants across the U.S., and Trump signed multiple executive orders to that effect last week. NBC News reported last month that Mexico and the Bahamas had rejected Trump’s request for the nations to accept migrants who didn’t come from there. “The Bahamas simply does not have the resources to accommodate such a request,” a spokesperson for its prime minister told NBC News. Mexico rejected a U.S. deportation flight last week. The report said the Trump transition team had also reached out to Panama, Grenada, and Turks and Caicos to gauge their interests. During the first Trump administration, the government instituted a policy where migrants would be deported to Guatemala without knowing where they were going. Multiple pro-immigrant rights groups sued the administration over the policy, though the lawsuits have not progressed.
