Jannik Sinner has hailed nearly-man Alexander Zverev as a grand slam champion in waiting after taking down the world No.2 in straight sets in the *********** Open final.
The top-ranked Sinner was full of empathy for his vanquished opponent after his 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 win on Sunday night consigned Zverev to a 0-3 record in major finals.
Zverev, one of the most unfulfilled talents in tennis, let his frustration show when he smashed his racquet after the second set.
The 27-year-old was emotional at the trophy presentation on Rod Laver Arena after letting slip another opportunity to claim an elusive grand slam title.
He was consoled by the sporting Sinner, who has no doubt about his rival’s ability.
“As you know, he is struggling to get these kind of trophies. I saw him down, you can see the images,” Sinner said of his post-match interaction with Zverev.
“I told him he is one of the best players in the world and he has to keep believing in himself and he has a great team, a great family – everyone is pushing him to do the right thing.
“He has improved a lot and there is no other player who deserves more to be holding these kind of trophies than him.
“I truly believe that he is going to be a grand slam champion at some point.”
In his previous grand slam finals, Zverev let a two-set lead slip against Dominic Thiem at the 2020 US Open and relinquished a two-sets-to-one advantage against Carlos Alcaraz at last year’s French Open.
Zverev said there is nothing more that he wants than to lift a grand slam trophy.
“I’m doing everything I can. I’m working as hard as I ever did,” he told reporters soon after the final.
“I think I’m doing all the right things off-court, I think I’m practising the right things, but I lost in straight sets today.
“That is a fact. I lost to Jannik in straight sets today.
“I don’t want to end my career as the best player of all-time to never win a grand slam, that’s for sure.
“I’ll keep doing everything I can to lift one of those trophies.”
There was some drama before Zverev’s on-court speech at the trophy presentation, when a protester interrupted proceedings.
The protester shouted “Australia believes Olga and Brenda” in reference to domestic abuse allegations against Zverev in recent years by former partners Olga Sharypova and Brenda Patea, which he has strenuously denied.
“I believe there are no more accusations. There haven’t been for, what, nine months now,” Zverev said.
“Good for her. I think she was the only one in the stadium who believed anything in that moment.
“If that’s the case, good for her. I think I’ve done everything I can, and I’m not about to open that subject again.”
Zverev’s next shot at grand slam glory will come at the French Open, where his loss to Alcaraz in last year’s final followed three consecutive semi-final appearances.

Scientists demonstrate first-ever quantum error solving with dual codes
Just like any machine, quantum computers are prone to make errors. These errors can cause the qubits to lose their quantum states, leading to inaccurate computations. To address this problem, quantum computers rely on special protocols called correction codes.
However, there is one big problem with this approach. No single correction code can ensure protection against all errors. This is why when more than one error pops up in a quantum system, the chances of its failure increase dramatically.
A team of European researchers has come up with an interesting solution to this problem.
In their latest study, they reveal a method that allows a quantum computer to switch between two different correction codes. This method will ensure the system performs all computing tasks in an error-free manner.
“No single error-correcting code intrinsically supports a fault-tolerant implementation of all the gates needed for universal quantum computing. One approach for addressing this problem is to switch between two suitable error-correcting codes that in combination provide a fault-tolerant universal gate set,” the study authors note.
Solving errors in the quantum world is tricky
When it comes to classical computers, errors are often fixed using methods like redundancy (storing multiple copies of data) or error-detection techniques, which compare copies of data to identify and correct mistakes.
However, quantum computers face a unique challenge. You cannot copy an unknown quantum state due to a fundamental rule of quantum mechanics called the no-cloning theorem. This means quantum states cannot be saved or duplicated during calculations, making it impossible to detect errors by comparing copies of the same state.
To overcome this limitation, scientists developed a different approach. Instead of copying quantum states directly, they spread the quantum information across multiple entangled qubits. This allows errors to be detected and corrected without violating quantum rules.
The specific methods for distributing and protecting quantum information are described in protocols known as quantum error correction codes. These codes enable quantum computers to operate reliably by ensuring that even if some qubits are affected by errors, the overall quantum information remains intact.
However, different quantum error correction codes also come with different difficulties. For instance, each code has a limit on how much noise or error it can handle. If the errors in the system exceed this threshold, the correction code won’t work.
Nevertheless, a quantum system can encounter different types of errors, such as bit-flips, phase-flips, or some combinations of these. This is why no single correction code can implement all the gate operations and protect against all the errors.
A dual-code approach
The study authors constructed a unique quantum circuit using a full universal gate set on an ion-trap quantum computer. In this setup, they introduced fault-tolerant code-switching between two different codes and prepared 12 distinct logical states that cannot be supported by a single correction code.
“We switch between the 7-qubit color code, which features fault-tolerant CNOT and H quantum gates, and the 10-qubit code, which allows for a fault-tolerant T gate implementation. Together, these codes form a complementary universal gate set,” the study authors said.
This is the first time scientists successfully demonstrated error solving in a quantum system using a combination of two correction codes. This breakthrough could contribute to the development of error-free quantum computing applications.
The study is published in the journal Nature Physics.

High energy costs in the European Union are probably among the main reasons behind the bloc’s deindustrialization. Many power-hungry production facilities relocate to Asia because it has become nearly impossible for them to stay competitive with current energy prices. Ireland is not an exception, and this makes Intel very concerned (according to RTE) as it runs its major Fab 34 near Leixlip and has to make sure that the fab produces products at competitive costs. But should Intel really be worried?
Intel’s Fab 34 in Ireland is the first production facility in Europe to use extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography to make chips in high volumes. The fab is capable of producing microelectronics using Intel 4 (previously known as 7nm) and Intel 3 (formerly known as 5nm) process technologies and currently produces compute tiles for Intel’s Core Ultra 1-series (Meteor Lake on Intel 4) and Xeon 6 processors (Granite Rapids and Sierra Forest on Intel 3). These are premium products.
Energy prices are rising across the world, in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. However, energy prices are considerably higher in Europe when compared to Asia and the U.S. For example, rates per kWh in the U.S. range from 8.57¢ in Texas to 11.41¢ in Oregon to 12.31¢ in Arizona. By contrast, electricity costs in Ireland vary from 15¢ (night rate) to 26¢ (day rate) for commercial customers. In South Korea and Taiwan, electricity for large commercial users costs 13¢ after increases in late 2024. Therefore, it is more expensive to make chips in Ireland than in the U.S. or Taiwan, at least with respect to energy costs.

When it comes to multibillion-dollar semiconductor fabrication facilities, the vast majority of their costs are represented by capital expenditures, depreciation, materials, and labor. Utilities, such as electricity, water, and cooling, account for a relatively small — single-digit to low double-digit percentage — of microelectronics production costs, according to some industry estimates.
For example, Intel consumed around 9.1 billion kWh of electricity in 2023, according to the company’s Corporate Responsibility Report (CSR). Intel uses green energy across all of its facilities in the U.S., Europe, Israel, and Asia, so its energy prices are a bit higher than those of average businesses. But if we assume that Intel paid 13¢ per kWh on average, then the company paid approximately $1.183 billion for electricity in 2023. Meanwhile, Intel’s total revenue in 2023 was $54.2 billion and its total costs were around $32.5 billion (that includes R&D, CapEx, SG&A, depreciation, etc.).
Therefore, energy accounted for 3.64% of Intel’s costs and 2.18% of Intel’s product revenue. It is plausible to assume that energy costs account for approximately 5% of Intel’s product costs, but that probably depends on actual products. For products like Intel’s Xeon 6980P, which sells for over $12,000, the contribution of energy costs is probably negligible.
But Intel is still concerned about energy costs in Ireland, according to the report. In fact, a ‘senior source’ in Davos told RTE that lower labor costs in Ireland are offset by high energy costs. These high costs stem from delays in renewable energy infrastructure and the fixed expenses of offshore wind farms, which are often passed on to customers, RTE claims. To address this, Intel is advocating for the state to assume part of these costs during the development phase to ease the financial burden on manufacturers like itself, the report says.

“They had to back it up today but there were probably at least two or three players that weren’t at 100 per cent,” Postecoglou said.
But he added ominously: “I’m a football manager and I get judged on results, that is the way of the world.”
Leicester climbed out of the relegation zone with just a second win in 10 league games under Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was himself under scrutiny ahead of the game having only been hired in late November.
In the other match, Brentford beat Crystal Palace 2-1 in a contest between mid-table clubs.
Bryan Mbeumo converted a penalty at the second attempt to put Brentford ahead. His first try at the spot kick hit the post and was cleared away by Palace defender Marc Guehi, who was penalised for encroachment.

A separate wind warning is in place across Wales on Sunday until 17:00 GMT with gusts of up to 60mph (97km/hr) expected and up to 70mph (113km/hr) on exposed coasts and hills.
Another wind warning comes into force from 06:00 on Monday until 06:00 on Tuesday across a large swathe of the country excluding Anglesey, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham.
The National Grid said, as of 14:30 on Sunday, it had 13 power cuts, affecting about 773 homes.
The worst affected areas were Merlin’s Bridge in Pembrokeshire, Splott in Cardiff, and Aberporth in Ceredigion.

It came a few hours after Trump wrote in a Truth Social post during that he “would like the United States to have a 50% ownership position in a joint venture.” Still, his exact plan remains unclear. Matthew Kuhnemann admits he briefly feared his thumb injury could have ended his hopes of touring Sri Lanka but both he and Steve Smith completed full training sessions on the squad’s arrival in Galle for the Test series.
Australia’s premier left-arm off-spinner Kuhnemann is now pain-free after wearing a ball on his non-bowling hand playing for the Big Bash League’s Brisbane Heat earlier this month.
He reunited with the squad in Sri Lanka at the weekend and completed Sunday afternoon’s first full session since arriving on the island for the two-match series.
Stand-in captain Smith, who suffered a minor elbow injury in the BBL, spent as much time batting in the nets as anyone else and did not appear hampered.
Every team member attended the optional session, with conditions so humid that top-order option Sam Konstas removed his helmet to finish batting in the nets.
Apparently in preparation for the turning conditions, allrounder Beau Webster bowled the right-arm off-spin of earlier in his career rather than the medium pace trotted out on Test debut at the SCG earlier this month.
Kuhnemann is continuing to wear a brace on his right thumb and medical staff will monitor him.
His injury appeared more serious than Smith’s, but Kuhnemann feels fit ahead of the first Test that begins on January 29.
“I had a couple of sessions back home and I was obviously cautious batting and fielding and everything but bowling, I haven’t had a problem whatsoever,” Kuhnemann said prior to the first training session.
“I did this same thumb a couple of years ago and it was real painful but this one has been fine from the get-go.”
As he awaited surgery, Kuhnemann said he was unsure whether he would have the chance to add to his three Test caps in Sri Lanka.
The 28-year-old needed to wait patiently for a debut when Australia toured India in 2023, and the lack of subcontinent visits since had robbed him of further chances.
“Definitely there were times when I was disappointed. It’s not great timing,” Kuhnemann said when asked whether he feared for his ability to tour.
“There was a couple of hours.
“But I believe everything happens for a reason and you sort of move on. Obviously you do everything you can because these tours don’t come around very often as a spinner.”
Kuhnemann could not attend the squad’s preparatory camp at the ICC Academy in Dubai but managed a hit-out with a Cricket Australia XI against England Lions at Allan Border Field last week.
“The boys said I didn’t miss out on too much and what I was bowling on back in Brisbane was an eight-day old wicket so it worked out pretty good,” Kuhnemann said.
“If it was the off-season then maybe it would be a blow to miss Dubai but we’re in the middle of summer and the workloads and confidence are high. Everything is all good.”

Anthony Albanese has vowed Australia will use the full force of the law to combat “vile” anti-Semitism across the nation, as countries mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.
In a statement commemorating International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the prime minister said society was “tragically” not free of the hatred.
“It (anti-Semitism) stands in vile opposition to all we are as a nation and all that we have built – together – over generations,” he said.
“We will not tolerate it in any form. It has no place in our nation, and we will combat it with the full force of our laws and with total commitment from every level of government.”
Six million Jewish people were systematically murdered in the Holocaust by the Nazi ******* regime.
In Australia, cars have been set alight, a synagogue burnt down and anti-Semitic slurs painted on buildings and cars in attacks that have escalated since December.
A Sydney childcare centre near a synagogue was badly damaged last Tuesday when it was targeted in an arson and graffiti attack.
Authorities believe “criminals for hire” are behind a spate of anti-Semitic attacks, as police investigate the possibility of overseas actors or individuals funding the targeting of Jewish communities.
“Jewish Australians are integral to the story of Australia, and to the even greater future within our reach,” the prime minister said.
“Australia proudly welcomed so many survivors of the horrors of the Holocaust, offering refuge and hope. We embraced the Jewish community then, and we embrace you now.”
Mr Albanese spoke of the devastation felt when witnessing the “horror, destruction and brutality” inflicted by ****** on October 7 when it launched its attack on Israel, saying it was reminiscent of the “dark and painful stories of the past”.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus will travel to Poland to attend the service marking the liberation of Auschwitz, which will take place early Tuesday morning, *********** time.
About 1.1 million people were murdered in the concentration camp before it was emancipated on January 27, 1945.
The coalition has promised $2 million in funding for the Holocaust Institute of WA to help educate the community about the Holocaust and the October 7 attack.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton will visit the institute on Monday to attend a service for the anniversary.

Comedian Josh Jones has been forced to withdraw from Dancing On Ice after being injured during rehearsals.
The 32-year-old was due to perform alongside partner Tippy Packard in the third episode of the ITV reality skating show on Sunday, but will now leave the competition early.
A message on the official Dancing On Ice social media channels said: “Josh and Tippy’s partnership will be greatly missed. We will be helping to support Josh and wish him well with his recovery.”
The Mancunian comic had never ice skated before entering Dancing On Ice, telling viewers his experience was “as the say in Eurovision… nuls points”.
Jones hosts the historical gossip podcast Dead Drama and is a co-presenter of the comedy podcast Chatting With Cherubs alongside Morgan Rees.
He has also appeared on shows including Jonathan Ross’ Comedy Club and 8 Out Of 10 Cats, and has hosted the BBC Three competition Fast Food Face-Off.
He was partnered with professional figure skater Tippy Packard, who joined the show in 2022.
The pair’s first skate on Dancing On Ice was a light-hearted performance to the Scissor Sisters hit I Don’t Feel Like Dancing, which landed them in the bottom two last week.
They narrowly survived elimination, with the Hollyoaks actress Chelsee Healey becoming the first celebrity to be voted off the 2025 series.
Following Jones and Packard’s exit from the show, fans took to social media calling for Healey to be allowed to return to the competition.
There has been no announcement on whether the couple will be replaced.
It is not the first time a contestant on the show has been forced to withdraw because of injury.
In 2024, former Olympic athlete Greg Rutherford was forced to pull out of the final after sustaining an injury in rehearsals.
Before last year’s series had begun, former Gogglebox star Stephen Lustig-Webb withdrew because of an ankle injury.
Others have sustained injuries but continued to compete.
Coronation Street star Antony Cotton fractured two ribs in 2018 when his partner, Brandee Malto, landed on top of him – but vowed that “the show must go on”.
And in the 2012 series, the former Brookside actor Jennifer Ellison attempted to impress the judges with a fierce “scorpion kick” – extending her leg towards the back of her head and cutting her head open with her skate.
She continued until the semi-final before being eliminated.

Washington — Vice President JD Vance defended President Trump’s effort to end birthright citizenship Saturday, arguing in his first interview since taking office that “just because we were founded by immigrants, doesn’t mean that 240 years later that we have to have the dumbest immigration policy in the world.”
“America should actually look out for the interests of our citizens first,” Vance said on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.” “If you’re here permanently and lawfully, your kid becomes an American citizen.”
Mr. Trump’s executive order targeting birthright citizenship directs federal agencies to stop issuing citizenship documents to children born on U.S. soil to parents in the country illegally or under temporary visas, and came among a wave of executive actions he signed shortly after returning to office last week.
The U.S. government has long interpreted the Constitution to mean that those born on American soil are citizens at birth, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. The 14th Amendment to the Constitution says “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
But Trump has for years touted the idea of ending birthright citizenship, arguing that it encourages ******** immigration.
The move has prompted a growing number of legal challenges in recent days. And a federal judge appointed by President Ronald Reagan temporarily blocked the order Thursday, calling it “blatantly unconstitutional.”
Vance said he disagrees, noting that the issue will be litigated, which he said is “the nature of our constitutional system.”
Vance explained that the “basic idea” behind the move is that lawful permanent residents or the children of a legal immigrant who plans to stay in the U.S. “should become American citizens.” But he said anyone who doesn’t plan to stay and gives birth in the U.S. shouldn’t become a citizen “by virtue of just having been born on American soil.”
Vance cited the example of a “child of an ambassador” who would not automatically receive American citizenship.
Brennan pointed out, “there’s already a carveout having to do with kids of diplomats.”
Vance replied, “We’re saying that that carve out should apply to anybody who doesn’t plan to stay here.”
He continued, “If you come here on vacation and you have a baby in an American hospital, that baby doesn’t become an American citizen. If you’re an ******** alien and you come here temporarily, hopefully, your child does not become an American citizen by virtue of just having been born on American soil. It’s a very basic principle in American immigration law, that if you want to become an American citizen, and you’ve done it the right way, and the American people in their collective wisdom have welcomed you into our national community, then you become a citizen.”
“This is a country founded by immigrants,” Brennan replied. “This is a unique country.”
“This is a very unique country,” said Vance, “and it was founded by some immigrants and some settlers.”
Vance claimed he didn’t know of “any country” that allows the children of people in a country on a temporary basis to become citizens, saying he doesn’t know why the U.S. “would be different.”
More than 30 countries have birthright citizenship or similar policies, according to the Central Intelligence Agency’s World Factbook.

We’re guessing the people who try running from Arkansas troopers at this point spend about zero time on the internet, like this guy on his ******* rocket who earns a nice love tap for his efforts. How anyone doesn’t know Arkansas State Police allows troopers to PIT, tap, and otherwise physically stop fleeing suspects at this point is beyond us, but the videos sure are entertaining.
Watch an Audi S5 ****** out and run from an Arkansas trooper.
Dashcam footage like this is also educational. It shows that ASP and similar agencies won’t mess around if you act like an entitled child who doesn’t have to follow the rules of the road. But we know some people will take issue with the trooper’s method of stopping this individual.
Like far too many who ride ******* rockets, this suspect seems to believe no other vehicle on the road can possibly keep up. That might be true in a 0-60 dash, but at higher speeds modern cars like the Dodge Chargers ASP often uses can in fact run with them.
But in this footage we’re pretty sure the trooper is in a Chevy Tahoe. That’s even more embarrassing.
It’s not like the suspect is all that bright or even an excellent rider. After all, while we commend his use of a full face helmet, he otherwise isn’t dressed for the slide, especially at the speeds he’s pushing in an effort to ditch the trooper.
Pulling off the highway, the rider signals for the trooper to pull up next to him. It seems to be a strategy to get the trooper’s guard down, allowing the suspect to take off again, but the trooper doesn’t take the bait.
When the trooper has the chance, he doesn’t hesitate to use his push bar to give the ******* rocket a nice, firm love tap. He can probably tell the rider doesn’t know how to handle that kind of force, and he absolutely doesn’t.
The suspect dumps bike as it gets wobbly, then he himself stumbles into the bushes like he’s had one too many. It’s a perfectly executed maneuver that doesn’t injure the rider but does end the chase immediately.

Much is being said about Poland’s economy potentially overtaking Britain by 2030, but in some areas Poles are already ahead.
They can produce a digital identity card or driving licence and use an array of public services using a mobile app, mObywatel. When accessing it for the first time, users have to verify their identity by logging into electronic banking, using a digitally enabled physical ID card, or through a special “trusted profile” online.
The app, which has 8 million users, has a myriad features such as allowing Poles to produce a digital version of their ID, check how many penalty points they have on their driving licence, look up their vehicle’s history, check air quality locally and find their polling station.
Rafał Sionkowski, a senior government official working on the app, said keeping the core team of developers within public institutions allowed them to move faster as they knew databases were digitised and could be made available to citizens quickly.
He said the key breakthrough would come as more EU countries develop similar apps ahead of the bloc’s new eIDAS 2.0 regulation on electronic identification, authentication and trust services.
The regulation, which is expected to be fully implemented by 2026 or 2027, provided the legal frame work to allow electronic identification systems to work across EU borders, “so you could show and verify your digital driving licence in Germany, or digital ID in Spain”, Sionkowski said.

He added that his team was looking to add new features to the Polish app, such as a tool for notifying insurers of car accidents. There is also growing interest in whether the app could play a role in online age verification and helping vulnerable groups access public services.
“The key thing is to focus on services that people will use,” Sionkowski said. He added that including thousands of air quality monitors to help people check their local readings was a particular hit in Poland. “That is when you actually add value through the app,” he said.
Wojciech Klicki, a privacy lawyer with the Panoptykon Foundation, a Polish rights NGO, stressed that such services needed to be designed to comply with strict “privacy-by-design, privacy-by-default” principles, but was not too concerned about their use. “We are primarily talking about the government reusing the data it already has or gets, just more efficiently,” he said.
However, Klicki warned against adding features that could be seen as intrusive, such as registering someone’s location without explicit permission.
He also pointed out that making the apps open source, to allow for independent scrutiny, or adding a feature to check which data was accessed by other government departments would help as they would give citizens greater control over their data.
Janusz Cieszyński, a former digital minister in the previous Law and Justice (PiS) government,said the rollout of the app was less controversial in Poland than it would have been in the *** given the existence of physical ID cards.
He played down criticisms that the app could turn into a Big Brother-style tool for snooping on citizens. “The key is to never make them mandatory. It is the same with some people holding out on using debit cards as they prefer to use cash. Fine,” Cieszyński said.
He added that he was excited about the technological opportunities of bringing more public services into a single app. “Theoretically, you could even use it for benefits, cost of living payments, or emergency allowances given to areas affected by a natural disaster, such as flood. You could make money available almost instantly by loading it on to a virtual payment card,” he said.
