Farmer David Thornley claims his breeding ewes lost pedigree lambs after drinking polluted water
A pedigree livestock farmer plans to take legal action against East Midlands Airport, claiming a leaking pipe polluted the brook that runs through his rented grazing land.
David Thornley claims 25 of his 100 ewes lost their valuable pedigree lambs after drinking from Diseworth Brook in Leicestershire in 2022.
In April, East Midlands International Airport Ltd pleaded guilty to charges of exceeding the limits of its environmental permits when it released water containing chemicals from holding ponds in January and February 2022.
The airport denies any link between the discharge and bacterial pollution in the brook.
The airport says the issues raised by Mr Thornley “do not form any part of the evidence in the case that the Environment Agency has brought to court”
Environmental studies show de-icing chemicals, washed from airport runways, can affect water quality because they encourage the growth of “sewage *******”, or “undesirable river biofilms”.
With more than 20 years’ experience as a prize-winning breeder, Mr Thornley says typically he would expect to lose just 2-3% of pregnancies after embryo transfer.
So in January 2022, when veterinary scans showed 25% of his impregnated ewes were no longer carrying lambs, he began to investigate.
Approaching Diseworth Brook, he says he was hit by a smell that “took your breath away”.
He took photos of the brook covered in a brown substance, which he now believes was sewage *******.
When he and his son walked upstream, they found “****** sludge” emerging from an outlet pipe below the airport’s holding ponds.
“There was nothing coming from above [that part of] the stream,” he says.
“It was clear as clear, and it smelt lovely until it got to that pipe.”
‘Small leak identified’
Mr Thornley immediately reported his pollution concerns to the Environment Agency (EA), which attended the following day.
When he contacted the airport in January 2022, its reply, seen by the BBC, confirmed: “There was an incident… where a small leak was identified into Diseworth Brook.”
The airport said in its email to Mr Thornley it was working with the EA, which was “now happy the issue had been resolved and there were no further impacts to the local watercourse”.
In February 2022, Mr Thornley asked a specialist company to take water samples.
The laboratory results showed the water was polluted with bacteria and unfit for livestock to drink.
However, the results did not prove a link between the bacteria and airport de-icing chemicals.
David Thornley
Mr Thornley took photos of Diseworth Brook in January 2022
“It’s devastating,” says Mr Thornley. “[Losing the lambs] has a big impact on the family. You can’t replace those bloodlines or that breeding overnight. It’s tens of years of breeding and investment to breed the right quality stock.”
Mr Thornley is asking for compensation of £50,000.
The EA asked Mr Thornley to give evidence in its case against the airport.
But that evidence was never heard.
The agency told the farmer he was no longer required after the airport’s lawyers unexpectedly entered guilty pleas to three of six charges at a pre-trial review.
The EA says those charges relate to the discharge of contaminated wastewater into the River Trent between 14 January 2022 and 4 February 2022, but declined to comment or give more detail until sentencing on 25 July.
David Thornley
The outlet pipe below the airport’s balancing ponds has now had a plug installed
Mr Thornley said airport staff had seemed sympathetic in initial meetings.
For two years, the airport paid his rent for extra grazing land to keep his stock away from the brook between November and April.
Those are the months when the airport has EA permits to discharge water containing de-icing chemicals from balancing ponds holding run-off from its runways.
But Mr Thornley says the airport is now refusing to continue the rental arrangement and claims he has not had a reply to letters from his insurance company lawyers.
He says he no longer trusts the airport to keep him informed about water quality and will continue to keep his livestock away from the brook from November to April.
‘Victorian legacy’
The EA’s case against the airport was supported by members of the Derby Railway Angling Club, who blame de-icing chemicals for causing large plumes of sewage ******* in the River Trent and threatening rare fish.
Before he retired, member Gary Cyster was a senior fisheries inspector for the EA.
He says he is disappointed that the agency did not pursue three further charges against the airport, including one linking airport chemical discharges to plumes of sewage ******* in the River Trent.
“Sewage ******* is like a legacy from the Victorian times,” he says.
“We shouldn’t be seeing any sewage *******. If effluent is going into the River Trent, there should be a finite limit for BOD [biological oxygen demand].”
Former Environment Agency inspector Gary Cyster says watercourses are being routinely polluted by airport chemicals
Mr Cyster says the Trent is home to some of the rarest fish in the country, including the spined loach and the bullhead, and these could be threatened by sewage ******* and low oxygen levels caused by de-icing chemicals.
He says he has research indicating that East Midlands Airport is the only airport in the country which does not have a finite BOD limit for discharging into a major river. Instead its “load-based” EA permit says that discharges should not have “adverse effects” on plants or animals in the water and that there should be “no significant adverse visual effect”.
“We feel like the River Trent has been sold down the river,” he says.
He is also concerned about the airport’s continuing expansion and plans for the East Midlands Freeport.
“This is going to affect all the watercourses around the area. So it’s about time that we had a modern treatment works there and they stop this pollution.”
What the airport says
East Midlands Airport said: “We take our environmental responsibilities very seriously and work closely with the Environment Agency on the operation of our water drainage system.
“We are aware of Mr Thornley’s concerns, take them seriously and have always responded to his correspondence.
“However, the issues he raises do not form any part of the evidence in the case that the Environment Agency has brought to court.
“The pollutants identified in the sample testing he undertook are not found in the de-icer products used by the airport but were instead contaminants associated with sewage, which the airport does not discharge to the brook.
“We are unable to comment further until the case reaches its full conclusion.”
How do de-icing chemicals affect streams and rivers?
For safety reasons, *** airports routinely use de-icing chemicals during winter months to protect aircraft and runways.
They pose a pollution danger, so airports are required to have treatment systems in place. Discharges should be monitored by the environmental regulator.
Bangor University researcher Dr Ben Exton investigated the impact of de-icing chemicals such as propylene glycol for his PhD.
He likens the effect of these chemicals on water-born bacteria to offering hungry humans a roomful of fattening fast food.
“It’s a bit like an unlimited flood of burgers… [the bacteria] grow extremely quickly, and as they grow, they deplete dissolved oxygen and stress other species,” he says.
“They blanket the river bed, and that kills off other things in the river.”
Numerous studies have shown de-icing chemicals cause habitat loss and poor water quality for invertebrates and fish.
“It’s been going on for years,” says Dr Exton.
“It’s really difficult to treat the de-icer contaminated water because, unlike things like sewage, it comes in fluxes.
“Biological systems that break down these compounds don’t ramp up and down well.”
A document on East Midlands Airport’s website flags de-icing chemicals as a “challenge”. The document outlines its permit limits and how it treats the run-off in winter and summer ponds to protect local waterways.
Its guilty pleas last month relate to breaching those permits.

People Who Perform Autopsies Are Sharing The Weirdest Anomalies They’ve Found, And The Human Body Is A Wild — And Terrifying — Place
People Who Perform Autopsies Are Sharing The Weirdest Anomalies They’ve Found, And The Human Body Is A Wild — And Terrifying — Place
You’d think after seeing hundreds of bodies, nothing would surprise people who do autopsies for a living — but sometimes, even they’re left stunned. Recently, u/atro_bella asked, “People who perform autopsies, what was the weirdest/most unique anomaly you’ve found?” And the answers did not disappoint. From misplaced organs and mystery tumors to bodies with missing brains (yes, really), these professionals shared the wildest, weirdest things they’ve discovered on the table:
1.”I performed autopsies for almost a decade. The most unique thing I saw was uterine didelphys with a septate *******. Basically, the ******* split in two and went to two separate cervixes and two separate uterine cavities. The two parts of the uterus fused into one heart-shaped body.”
Bloomberg Creative / Getty Images/Bloomberg Creative Photos
“I only saw that once.”
—u/yeahprobablydrunk
2.”Situs inversus. Basically, all the organs were in mirrored anatomical positions from where they should normally be. So, so cool.”
—u/PaperClipehz
3.”In a previous career, I was a US Army CID agent. For every death investigation that required an autopsy, we had to send an agent to photograph and observe for the case file. One guy who had been stabbed through the heart with a steak knife by his wife was in peak physical shape — but when the pathologist pulled his brain out, he said, “Look at this.” I have no biology training, but the golf ball-sized tumor on his brainstem was obvious even to me. The doctor said he had maybe 90 days to live at the time of his death.”

“The wife went to prison for *******, and all she had to do was wait a few months and she’d have been a hero Army widow.”
—u/Underwater_Karma
4.”An old woman with an incredibly thick skull all the way around. Her brain was much, much smaller than it should have been, but according to her family, she was fully functional and displayed no deficits of any kind. She actually ran her own cheese-making company and died from a carbon monoxide leak.”
“Strangest case I ever saw!”
—u/User5711
5.”I was performing an autopsy on an elderly patient with cardiac valve disease and found a 3 cm white plastic disc lodged in the ostium of one of the renal arteries. It was identical to the disc of the patient’s tilting valve-type mechanical aortic valve, which was in place, intact, and functioning normally. We had no explanation for why an extra valve disc was present far downstream from the heart. An in-depth review of the patient’s surgical history revealed that many years earlier, during the installation of the aortic valve, the cage for the valve broke while being installed. The disc had flown into the aorta and couldn’t be retrieved. The surgeon immediately removed the broken cage, replaced the entire apparatus with another valve, and completed the surgery.”
LifestyleVisuals / Getty Images
“We found no evidence of any subsequent investigation to determine the whereabouts of the lost valve component. So for years — apparently unknown to most of his caretakers and possibly even to the patient — he had a cardiac valve disc lodged in his renal artery ostium. It was non-obstructing and stable, and was discovered as an incidental finding during the autopsy.”

6.”I did an autopsy of a young kid, around 10 years old, who had hydrocephalus and was quadriplegic, yet retained some of his normal functions, like talking and understanding — albeit minimally. When I opened his skull, there was no brain. I was shocked. This was my first time witnessing something like this. There was approximately 1.5 liters of fluid and just an empty skull. The brain was so severely atrophied it was smaller than a golf ball.”
“Amazing how he survived until age 10!”
—u/Danger-Doctor-419
7.”My stepmom is a ******** director/embalmer and had a deceased person with a 6-inch tail just below their spinal cord.”
—u/benman5745
8.”An accessory spleen just hanging out, attached to the intestines.”
—u/mamallama2020

9.”As part of high school anatomy, we went on a field trip to a local college to work with bodies donated to science. They had a sign: ‘If you can’t find it, they don’t have one.’ A nearby body was missing some part of the digestive tract (I forget what — appendix?). They searched up and down. Just wasn’t there. No scar indicating removal either.”

“Another body was a dead biker and heavy drinker. His body adjusted, though. His liver was seriously twice the size of anyone else’s there — maybe more — and stretched all the way across his torso. That liver was a beast.”
—u/drakethrice
10.”In medical school, I attended one autopsy where the patient had a fistula (connection) between his aortic artery and his esophagus. He bled to death that way. Scary to think about.”
—u/TyrosinLennyster
11.”I observed a lot of things during my professional autopsies. The most notorious was a guy with four .22 bullets in his cranium. He didn’t claim pain and apparently lived a normal life. His daughter told me he was a gang member when he was young. He died of cardiac arrest at age 60.”
—u/vannerboere
12.”A horseshoe kidney — both kidneys were fused at the lower ends. Another person had a missing lung lobe, so two lobes on each side instead of two and three, and no sign of surgery.”
—u/notonthenightshift
13.”I’m a ******** director and was embalming an old woman who was still warm — she had died just about an hour before. I couldn’t get any drainage at all, but I had the drain tube in her vein, opened up, and the embalming fluid was pushing through. It didn’t make sense. I started rooting around in her vein and saw some coagulation, and used forceps to pull out a clot that looked like a tree branch. It was about 7 inches long and had branches from smaller vessels. She instantly started bleeding out.”
Alacatr / Getty Images
“She was a great embalming.”
—u/knittykittyemily
14.”My aunt, who worked as a pathologist, told me of the time she did an autopsy on a newborn baby who was born seemingly healthy but was unable to feed and then died. The baby’s esophagus was not connected to the stomach — it was connected to the trachea and lungs instead. And the lungs were full of milk.”
—u/Heroic-Forger
15.”Back in 1990, I was completing a group autopsy in an advanced human anatomy class. An 85-year-old patient had a tumor in her brain. It was the size of a golf ball on her right lobe — unknown to her before death. She died in her sleep of natural causes. The tumor was not malignant but most likely caused some wicked headaches, along with other symptoms.”
“The stuff you find. The body is a wonder.”
—u/Appropriate_Bad74247
16.”I’m not a regular autopsy performer, but I do a lot with forensic archaeology (mostly natural mummies now) and had to take an A&P class that involved cadaver dissection. Female patient died at 102 of natural causes. We found that the joint of her left elbow had been replaced with something that legitimately looked like a car part. Turns out she’d lived somewhere in Soviet Eastern Europe and had the procedure done sometime in the 1960s. It looked like the replacement was done with whatever was available.”
Capuski / Getty Images
“It was absolutely incredible.”
—u/amycusfinch
17.”A huge pericarditis pus buildup that was 500 ml in volume and bright green. Intestines that had herniated into a man’s testicles. Horseshoe kidneys — I’ve seen this twice in my 10-year mortuary career. I’ve seen many accessory spleens, which are very cute. I have so many other cool things, but these rank up there.”
“Oh, just wanted to add that jumping maggots are a thing. Fun times!”
—u/panowshamwow

Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning are both nominated for their performances in Baby Reindeer
Baby Reindeer and Mr Bates vs the Post Office will go head to head at the Bafta TV Awards, which take place later at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
The event is one of the most prestigious in the TV calendar, and will see shows broadcast in 2024 compete for awards voted for by the British Academy.
First screened by ITV n January 2024, Mr Bates vs the Post Office was one of the most impactful shows of the year and led to widespread public outcry about the wrongful convictions of hundreds of sub-postmasters.
Baby Reindeer, meanwhile, was a breakout viral hit for Netflix about an aspiring comedian and his stalker, but it also prompted a defamation claim from the woman said to have inspired it.
The TV Baftas mark the final stop on the awards circuit for both shows, after wins at other events such as the Emmys, Golden Globes, SAG and National Television Awards.

The above tallies include nominations for the memorable moment prize, the only award voted by the public.
The numbers do not include the shows’ earlier nominations and wins at the Bafta Craft Awards, which took place last month and saw Baby Reindeer’s Richard Gadd take home best comedy writing, with Slow Horses and Inside No. 9 among the other winners.
Disney+
David Tennant is nominated for his role in Rivals, Disney’s adaptation of the Jilly Cooper novel
The Post Office scandal is widely considered the biggest miscarriage of justice in modern British history, and saw hundreds of sub-postmasters wrongly prosecuted and convicted of crimes they didn’t commit, based on inaccurate data from the Horizon software system.
The story was reported in the media over several years, but ITV dramatisation Mr Bates vs the Post Office brought it a new league of public attention and prompted the government to announce new legislation to exonerate and compensate victims.
Meanwhile, Baby Reindeer told the story of a struggling stand-up comedian, the woman who stalks him, and the powerful man in the TV industry who mentors and then ********* assaults him. Richard Gadd’s partly autobiographical drama became one of the most dissected series of the year.
Other nominees include Rivals, a Disney+ adaptation of a Jilly Cooper novel about two powerful men battling for control of a local TV network, and Slow Horses, about a dysfunctional unit within MI5 made up of disgraced agents.
Say Nothing, which followed the lives of those growing up during the troubles in Belfast, is also nominated, alongside Mr Loverman, a screen adaptation of Bernadine Evaristo’s novel about an elderly man whose marriage falls apart after his long-term affair with his male friend is revealed.
Sherwood focused on a Nottinghamshire community still reeling from the 1980s miners’ strike, while Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light continued Hilary Mantel’s trilogy about Thomas Cromwell’s continued rise to power and eventual fall from grace.
Other nominees include reality series The Traitors, a game of deception played in a Scottish castle, and Gavin & Stacey: The Finale, which saw the long-running series about two families from from Billericay in Essex and Barry in Wales reach an emotional conclusion.
Who is hosting the Bafta TV Awards?Getty Images
Scottish TV presenter and actor Alan ******** has hosted three seasons of The Traitors USA
Actor and TV presenter Alan ******** will take over hosting duties this year, and we hope he brings just as much drama as he did to the latest cracking series of The Traitors US.
The Scottish star’s film credits include Eyes Wide Shut, GoldenEye and Emma, as well as two absolute masterpieces of 1990s cinema – Spice World: The Movie and Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.
Bafta’s executive director of awards and content, Emma Baehr, said ******** would “definitely bring a playful sense of mischief and fun to the ceremony”.
Elsewhere in the ceremony, Jessie J will deliver her first TV performance in six years, singing the appropriately titled The Award Goes To, while Tom Grennan will perform his new single Full Attention.
Awards will be presented by stars including Dame Mary Berry, Billy Porter, Suranne Jones, Ashley Walters, Katie Piper, Sir David Suchet, Big Zuu, Ellie Simmonds, Owen Cooper, Rose Ayling Ellis, Stacey Dooley and Baroness Benjamin.
How to watch the Bafta TV Awards
Mr Loverman has three nominations, including acting nods for Lennie James (left) and Ariyon Bakare
The ceremony will be broadcast on BBC One at 19:00 BST.
But it actually takes place a couple of hours earlier, so that some sections of the ceremony can be edited down before the show airs.
BBC News will be running spoiler-free coverage, with winners revealed on our live page in line with when they are announced on BBC One.

Michael Feinstein Calls Kennedy Center Show Cancellations “Government-Sanctioned Censorship”
Michael Feinstein Calls Kennedy Center Show Cancellations “Government-Sanctioned Censorship”
Michael Feinstein is speaking out about the Kennedy Center event cancellations which led to the dismissal of a Pride program he was set to conduct.
In an Instagram post earlier this week, the singer and pianist slammed the “recent Kennedy Center losses,” noting them as “government-sanctioned censorship.” There, Feinstein shared his penned “Fear of ******?” essay, where he further discussed the cancellations.
More from The Hollywood Reporter
“Recently, I was invited to conduct the National Symphony Orchestra, perform and speak at a program entitled ‘A Peacock Among Pigeons: Celebrating 50 Years of Pride’ at The Kennedy Center, which celebrated the rainbow of influences upon art, music and our entire culture,” Feinstein began. “This program was abruptly and unceremoniously canceled.”
“These recent Kennedy Center losses may well be defined in the years ahead, as the 21st century government-sanctioned censorship and silencing of creativity, regardless of value, based strictly on ******* orientation,” he wrote. Later in the essay, Feinstein also addressed Donald Trump’s recent executive order to stop federal funding for NPR and PBS.
“Indeed, the latest attempts to strip PBS and NPR of critical funds, highlight the fact that any government-supported access to the arts is no longer safe,” he wrote. “Since the current administration has banned, cancelled or forbidden, in an effort to erase any concert or program at the Kennedy Center, that in any way allows art to acknowledge of existence of homosexuality.”
After returning to power, Donald Trump announced his plans to “terminate multiple individuals from the Board of Trustees” of the center on Truth Social in February, and named himself chairman of the Kennedy Center in a vote that resulted in the center’s longtime president Deborah Rutter being fired.
In a statement shared online in early March, Roma Daravi, the Kennedy Center’s vice president of public relations, said that “the only shows under the Kennedy Center programming umbrella that we have cancelled since February 12 were due to lack of sales or artist availability.”
Feinstein continued, “The next logical step is to ban all works written by ***********, *********, omnisexual, ************ people, friends of gay people or people suspected of being ******. It worked for the Nazis, right?”
As a lifelong friend and collaborator to Liza Minnelli, the EGOT winner showed her support for Feinstein’s “clarion call about what may only be defined as a bigoted attack on the arts” and the LGBTQ+ community.
“As an ally of the LGBTQ+ community, a human rights advocate, the daughter of two iconic, amazing artists, a career of my own that without contributions from LGBTQ+ geniuses, would have rendered me a singer with few songs, a dancer with few collaborators, mostly naked ON STAGE, acting without scripts and I could go on!” Minnelli wrote. “Please read ‘Fear of ******? by Michael Feinstein’ carefully. Become active in solution. Together, we will stop censorship and hate.”

Trump fires top US copyright official
Trump fires top US copyright official
President Donald Trump continued a firing spree at the Library of Congress on Saturday when he dismissed the top copyright official in the nation — a position traditionally overseen by the legislative branch.
The White House contacted Register of Copyrights Shira Perlmutter Saturday afternoon informing her that her job leading the U.S. Copyright Office had been “terminated,” according to internal Library of Congress communications obtained by POLITICO.
Federal law provides that the Register of Copyrights be appointed by and supervised by the Librarian of Congress, which is a position that requires presidential nomination and Senate confirmation. The previous Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden, was fired Friday by the White House with no reason provided in a one sentence email.
Hayden was confirmed by the Senate in 2016 to serve a 10-year term. She appointed Perlmutter, who assumed her position in Oct. 2020.
Rep. Joe Morelle, the top Democrat on the House Administration Committee which oversees the Library of Congress and U.S. Copyright Office, is alleging it is “no coincidence [Trump] acted less than a day after [Perlmutter] refused to rubber-stamp Elon Musk’s efforts to mine troves of copyrighted works to train AI models.”
Perlmutter and her office issued a lengthy report about artificial intelligence that included some questions and concerns about the usage of copyrighted materials by AI technology, an industry which Musk is heavily involved in.
“This action once again tramples on Congress’s Article One authority and throws a trillion-dollar industry into chaos,” Morelle continued in a statement. “When will my Republican colleagues decide enough is enough?”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Ben Jacobs contributed to this report.

Ousted minister calls on Labor to ditch timidity in second term, unleashes on Marles as ‘factional assassin’
Ousted minister calls on Labor to ditch timidity in second term, unleashes on Marles as ‘factional assassin’
Labor’s Ed Husic has mounted a scathing attack on the Deputy Prime Minister, describing him as a “factional assassin” who prioritised factional wars over showing leadership.
The Member for Chifley, who increased his vote in his western Sydney seat, was ousted from the frontbench in Thursday’s factional carve-up of the ministry positions.
Former attorney-general Mark Dreyfus also lost his frontbench position.
Mr Husic said on Sunday that once it became clear Mr Marles, from the Victorian right, wasn’t going to budget in his claim to more ministry positions for his faction, he had volunteered to step down so as not to force his fellow NSW right colleagues into a messy ballot.
But he said Mr Marles should reflect on how he had put Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in a bad spot with the factional blood-letting marring Labor’s historic and unifying election victory.
“I think when people look at a deputy prime minister, they expect to see a statesman, not a factional assassin,” Mr Husic told ABC’s Insiders.
He acknowledged that he had often been outspoken in cabinet and occasionally publicly over the past three years.
That included using his authority as the most senior ******* member of the Government to speak out about the Middle East conflict both in cabinet and publicly.
But he vowed not to keep silent on the backbench.
“We need to burn through the timidity that has shackled us in the first term. We are going to need to make big changes in a world that is changing fast to ensure the country stands on its own two feet,” he said.
“I have a contribution to make. I want to keep making it, and I’ll do it from the backbench.
“And I’ve got to say, I’ve walked political deserts before. All I hope for at the end is you might have a bottle of water for me when I emerge.”
Mr Albanese is now deciding how to allocate portfolios, with his new ministry set to be sworn in on Tuesday.

For the First Time, Scientists Caught Atoms Freely Interacting in Space—and It Was Stunning
For the First Time, Scientists Caught Atoms Freely Interacting in Space—and It Was Stunning
“Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links.”
Until now, atoms have never been imaged interacting freely in space, but a new technique known as non-resolved microscopy has changed that.
MIT physicists were able to successfully capture images of interacting bosons and fermions that were frozen in place and then illuminated. The images proved previous predictions about these types of atoms.
This demonstrates that there is real, tangible proof of mathematical predictions in the physical world.
What do atoms do when we’re not watching? It turns out they do exactly what we thought.
Enigmatic because of their quantum nature—meaning that they behave as both particles and waves—atoms had never been visualized freely interacting with each other. Where an atom is and how fast it is moving through space cannot be determined simultaneously. Before, it had been possible to make out the shape and structure of entire clouds of atoms using probes, but the individual atoms within the cloud eluded observation. Now, a team of researchers from MIT have finally managed to capture their interactions for the first time.
Led by physicist Martin Zwierlein, the team developed a technique that allowed them to freeze atoms in place and put them in the spotlight with lasers. They were able to successfully image bosons of a sodium isotope and fermions of a lithium isotope before these atoms scattered again. (Bosons—like the infamous Higgs Boson—have spins of integer values, while fermions—like electrons, protons, and neutrons—have odd half-integer spins.) Both isotopes were in the form of quantum gases.
Bosons were previously predicted to bunch together in a wave form, exhibiting the wave part of quantum behavior, while fermions were predicted to repel those like them and form pairs with different fermions, which illustrates particle behavior. The probability of finding bosons near each other is high, while there is a low chance of seeing fermions as close together, and the gases needed to be at ultracold temperatures to see anything at all (because atoms get the zoomies when agitated by heat).
“Imaging quantum gases in situ at the resolution of single atoms realizes the ultimate depth of information one may obtain in real space,” Zwierlein and his team said in a study recently published in Physical Review Letters.
Their new technique, known as non-resolved microscopy, involves using a laser beam to trap the atoms in one place. There, they are free to interact before they are exposed to a lattice of light that freezes them in place. The atoms are then illuminated with fluorescent light to expose where they are and what they are doing. There was some difficulty in lighting these atoms up, since too much heat would send them flying all over. As a result, this is the first time Zwierlein managed to freeze the motion of strongly interacting atoms in situ, and he was able to capture images of both bosons and fermions.
With bosons, the team formed a Bose-Einstein condensate, which is a boson gas cloud cooled to temperatures verging on absolute zero. The MIT team wanted to prove the existing prediction that bosons bunch together because of their high probability of being near each other and their ability to share the same quantum mechanical wave. Atoms in this type of wave show wave-like behavior as they keep changing in time and space, but the properties of those atoms are difficult to observe. The image of bosons shows atoms bunching together with wavelike trails of light behind them, indicating that they are moving in waves.
To image a fermion cloud, the team needed two types of fermions—they wanted to capture pairs, and fermions of only one type would end up repelling each other. Sure enough, fermions of the same type avoided each other, while opposite fermions attracted each other.
Zwierlein plans to continue using non-resolved microscopy to understand more about the physical world and potentially image stranger, more exotic quantum phenomena.
“This kind of pairing is the basis of a mathematical construction people came up with to explain experiments. But when you see pictures like these, it’s showing in a photograph, an object that was discovered in the mathematical world,” Richard Fletcher, a coauthor of the study and physicist from MIT, said in a recent press release. “So it’s a very nice reminder that physics is about physical things. It’s real.”

Kyriacou slips as Thitikul soars for LPGA Tour lead
Kyriacou slips as Thitikul soars for LPGA Tour lead
World No.2 Jeeno Thitikul has defied strong winds to shoot a seven-under 65 and take a one-shot lead from Frenchwoman Celine Boutier into the final round of the LPGA Tour’s Mizuho Americas Open in New Jersey.
Defending champion Nelly Korda missed a pair of birdie opportunities on the back nine at Liberty National and settled for a 68, leaving her only two shots behind as the No.1 player in women’s golf goes for her first win of the year.
Australia’s Steph Kyriacou could not keep pace in her bid for a first LPGA title after starting Saturday one shot from the lead.
She posted a 73 with three bogeys as she dropped to a share off 13th, eight shots off the lead, with countrywomen Minjee Lee (72) and Hira Naveed (73) a shot further back.
Fellow Australians Hannah Green (75) and Grace Kim (75) struggled and were tied 35th at even par, with Gabriela Ruffels (76) another stroke behind, while Karis Davidson (81) was at eight over.
The LPGA Tour moved up several tees to account for wind strong enough to bend flagsticks, particularly on the closing stretch. That led to some big finishes as players positioned themselves for the final round.
Thai star Thitikul was among those who took advantage in a round including nine birdies. She birdied the reachable par-4 16th with water down the right side, picked up another birdie on the 17th and finished at 14-under 202.
“The strategies for today, I just trying to keep it on the fairway and then on the green,” Thitikul said. “I know it’s going to be a really tough day and then I have to be patient out there. So I don’t know how I did that, but like I take it.”
Boutier rolled in a 40-foot birdie putt over a ridge on the 15th — that was a bonus — for the start of three straight birdies. She made par on the 18th for a 66.
Korda tried to keep pace with Thitikul and rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt from just off the green at the par-3 14th.
With the wind at her back, she judged her wedge perfectly to 4 feet for birdie at the 17th.
“You just have to dial in to a small target and you have to be focused 100 per cent on each shot,” Korda said of the tough conditions, rain Friday and wind on a clear Saturday.
Andrea Lee had her third straight 68 and joined Korda at 12-under 204. Yealimi Noh chipped for eagle on the 16th and shot 67. She was three shots behind.

Putin proposes direct peace talks with Ukraine after three years of war
Putin proposes direct peace talks with Ukraine after three years of war
MOSCOW, May 11 (Reuters) – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday proposed direct talks with Ukraine on May 15 in Istanbul that he said should be aimed at achieving a durable peace and eliminating the root causes of the war.
Russian President Vladimir Putin gives a statement to the media at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia May 11, 2025.
Putin sent thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022, triggering the gravest confrontation between Russia and the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
More: Ukraine, European leaders agree to unconditional 30-day ceasefire in war with Russia
He said that Russia was proposing direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul in an attempt to “eliminate the root causes of the conflict” and “to achieve the restoration of a long-term, lasting peace.”
“It was not Russia that broke off negotiations in 2022. It was Kyiv. Nevertheless, we are proposing that Kyiv resume direct negotiations without any preconditions,” Putin said, referring to failed talks shortly after the Russian invasion of 2022.
“We offer the Kyiv authorities to resume negotiations already on Thursday, in Istanbul,” Putin said.
“Our proposal, as they say, is on the table, the decision is now up to the Ukrainian authorities and their curators, who are guided, it seems, by their personal political ambitions, and not by the interests of their peoples.”
Major European powers threw their weight behind an unconditional 30-day Ukraine ceasefire on Saturday, with the backing of President Donald Trump, and threatened Putin with “massive” new sanctions if he did not accept within days.
More: War in Ukraine rages on as Putin’s 3-day ceasefire nears: updates in maps
Trump, who says he wants to be remembered as a peacemaker, has repeatedly said he wants to end the “bloodbath” of the Ukraine war, which his administration casts as a proxy war between the United States and Russia.
Former President Joe Biden, Western European leaders and Ukraine cast the invasion as an imperial-style land grab and repeatedly vowed to defeat Russian forces.
Putin casts the war as a watershed moment in Moscow’s relations with the West, which he says humiliated Russia after the Soviet Union fell in 1991 by enlarging NATO and encroaching on what he considers Moscow’s sphere of influence, including Ukraine.

Huge great white shark spotted swimming near surfers in Pismo Beach. See the video
Huge great white shark spotted swimming near surfers in Pismo Beach. See the video
After surfing for 34 years, David Steiner knows he’s not alone in the ocean.
The idea of creatures lurking beneath the waves used to freak him out. But now, the Arroyo Grande resident is a bit of a shark enthusiast — and he captures drone footage of the “king of the ocean” whenever he can.
In April, he took videos of great white sharks swimming near Oceano and Pismo Beach. He posted the videos on his Instagram @caveman_476.
One video shows a massive shark slowly cruising through the shallow waters off Pismo Beach as surfers wait to catch waves nearby.
“They’re definitely seasonal, and they’re back in town,” he said.
A San Luis Obispo County surfer captured drone video of a great white shark swimming in the shallow waters off Pismo Beach on April 21, 2025.
Seeing the sharks on video and understanding their habits eased his fears about encountering them.
“I started really watching what they were doing, and they were just ignoring surfers completely,” Steiner said. “That kind of helps my mentality with staying in the water.”
In 2022, he saw an 8-foot-long shark and a 10-foot-long shark swimming together, and he sailed closer to check them out.
“It’s kind of surreal, because, you know you probably shouldn’t be tempting fate,” Steiner said. “But it’s too hard to not take the opportunity to just have a longer glance at them.”
Normally, he sees sharks swimming out past the furthest waves. When the waves are tall, the sharks travel deeper into the ocean. When the surf is flat, sharks swim about 100 feet from shore, he said.
“They’re just like the perfect creature,” he said. “They’re so still. Like, when I had one just right next to me, I didn’t know it was there, and then I realized, we never know they’re there.”
Great white sharks patrol South County beaches
Back in April, Steiner said his friend was chased out of the water by a great white shark between Pier Avenue and Grand Avenue in Oceano.
So on April 16, Steiner packed up his drone and set out to find the shark.
“I flew it up and immediately saw it,” he said.
For three days, the shark swam to the same spot at 10:45 a.m. Steiner suspected that the shark was hunting for fish in the rip current.
Steiner then took the drone to Pismo Beach on his 49th birthday. On April 21, he spotted a 12-foot-long shark that he called Big Mama.
“I swear to God, this thing’s body was so ****, I thought it was somebody’s boat. I thought it was an orca. And then when I saw it was a great white, I was trembling,” he said.
The shark swam near a group of surfers, and Steiner started to worry.
“I have tried flying my drone in people’s faces, and they don’t react anyway,” he said. “They wave you off, they don’t know what you’re trying to tell them. There’s no speaker.”
Steiner moved his drone above the shark, and luckily, the surfers paddled to shore. When he later posted the video on Instagram, a surfer messaged him and said when he saw the drone, he decided to stop surfing for the day just in case there was a shark nearby.
Steiner had a message for swimmers on the Central Coast: “Don’t be afraid of the water,” he said. “The lack of incidents proves to me that they’re not interested.”
A San Luis Obispo County surfer captured drone video of a great white shark swimming in the shallow waters off Pismo Beach on April 21, 2025.
Shark encounters and ‘tempting fate’
Steiner recounted an incident in 2019, when a shark approached his paddle board in the water off Oceano.
He paddled out about 100 feet from shore, then spotted a 13-foot-long great white shark beside him in the water.
“It popped up right in front of me, and it was ******* than my board,” he said.
Then, the shark darted through the water — leaving not a ripple on the surface of the ocean.
“It turned, made a U-turn, and it came to the other side of me and stopped,” he said.
A San Luis Obispo County surfer captured drone video of a great white shark swimming in the shallow waters off Pismo Beach on April 21, 2025.
A wave rocked the paddle board, and Steiner fell into the water, landing in the patch of ocean where the shark had just appeared.
“I was just waiting to get bit,” Steiner said, but the shark swam away — uninterested in him.
To calm himself down, Steiner visualized the videos he’d seen of sharks swimming around surfers without interest. He figured that sharks swim near humans every day without taking a bite.
San Luis Obispo County’s last recorded fatal great white shark attack happened near Morro Rock in 2021. Before that, only two fatal shark attacks had been recorded in recent history, one in Morro Bay in 1957 and another in Avila Beach in 2003.
Considering the number of non-lethal shark encounters that occur regularly, Steiner doesn’t worry too much about the big fish. In fact, when he’s windsurfing, Steiner will sometimes approach sharks to get a closer look.
“You just, kind of, ride with them and watch them swim. They’re not concerned with you,” he said. “They’re just, like, the king of the ocean.”
