Prince Edward to represent King at Pope’s inauguration
Prince Edward will represent King Charles at the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV.
The Duke of Edinburgh will travel to the ******** on behalf of the royal family for the new Pope’s formal installation as pontiff at a mass in St Peter’s Square on May 18.
Edward, the King’s brother, will be joined by global leaders for the ceremony to mark the official start of Pope Leo XIV’s tenure as head of the Catholic Church.
King Charles sent a private message to the Pope congratulating him on his election as he expressed “most sincere good wishes for his Pontificate”.
The new pontiff, who was formerly known as Robert Prevost, is the first American-born Pope in history and called for the Catholic Church to “desperately” try to remedy a lack of faith in his first mass at the ******** on Friday.
“A lack of faith is often tragically accompanied by the loss of meaning in life, the neglect of mercy, appalling violations of human dignity, the crisis of the family and so many other wounds that afflict our society,” Leo said in an address delivered in Italian.
The pontiff warned that people have been turning away from the church in favour of “technology, money, success, power, or pleasure”.
He also echoed the calls of his predecessor, the late Pope Francis, in calling for peace around the world.
“Help us, and each other, to build bridges through dialogue, through encounter, to come together as one people, always in peace,” he said.
Prince William had attended the ******** of Pope Francis on behalf of the King in April after his death at the age of 88.
Charles, who had met the late pontiff with his wife Queen Camilla just weeks before Francis’s death, had issued a statement paying tribute to the late pontiff.
“My wife and I were most deeply saddened to learn of the death of Pope Francis. Our heavy hearts have been somewhat eased, however, to know that His Holiness was able to share an Easter Greeting with the Church and the world he served with such devotion throughout his life and ministry,” the King wrote.
Charles recalled Francis’s compassion and tireless commitment to the faith, saying he had touched the lives of many.
“We send our most heartfelt condolences and profound sympathy to the Church he served with such resolve and to the countless people around the world who, inspired by his life, will be mourning the devastating loss of this faithful follower of Jesus Christ. Charles R.”

Rep. Jasmine Crockett Says Dems Already Backing ‘Safest White Boy’ for President in 2028: ‘One Specific Candidate’
Rep. Jasmine Crockett Says Dems Already Backing ‘Safest White Boy’ for President in 2028: ‘One Specific Candidate’
Democrats are eying the “safest white boy” ahead of the 2028 election, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett told “Urban View” hosts Clay Cane and Reecie Colbert in a clip from a town hall shared online Friday. She didn’t name names, but suggested the party already has “one specific candidate” in mind.
In the clip shared by Cane, the group is speaking about potential candidates when Crockett offers her insight. “It is, it is this fear that the people within the party, within the primary system, will have about voting for a woman because every time we voted for a woman, we’ve lost,” she explained.
“So far. And I think that that’s a natural fear because we just want to win. So there’s a lot of people that are like, you know what? Like, let’s go find the safest white boy we can find. I mean, I’m just saying,” she added.
“No, for real. And to be clear, when we talk about them, I can tell you that there is one specific candidate,” Crockett continued. “I had a donor on the phone with me telling me that all the donors are lining up behind that candidate. So I can tell, and I tell you, it’s not a ****** person nor a woman, okay?”
The party — or “they” as she put it — “When I say ‘they,’ it’s the same donors that most likely had their opinions about Joe Biden and moved … So like, that would be the ‘they’ that I would talk about,” she said.
“Trump, who is a misogynist. Trump, who is going to ramp up the misogynists in the first place because that’s what he does. He is disrespectful,” she added. “Like, right now, he still doesn’t know how to deal with me because if you punch me, I’m punching back, okay? So, like, here’s the deal. Here’s the deal. Now, I know he think he’s running again, but that ain’t happening. I don’t care what all is going on in in this country, and I don’t care how many things we won’t say we are absolutely going to do. I am telling y’all with all confidence he is not running for a third term. That is not a thing.”
The clip is part of a town hall that will be released on May 15.

Ollie Watkins: ‘Fantastic’ Aston Villa striker ‘shows weight in gold’
Ollie Watkins: ‘Fantastic’ Aston Villa striker ‘shows weight in gold’
On Saturday at a sun-kissed Bournemouth, Watkins guided Morgan Rogers’ low cross into the bottom corner with a delicate, deft touch.
It was his 16th Premier League goal of the season – no other Englishman has more.
Longevity is key. Watkins has scored at least 10 league goals in all of his five seasons at Villa, helping him move ahead of Dwight Yorke, Dion Dublin and Juan Pablo Angel in the club’s top-scorer charts.
“It’s a big achievement. some unbelievable players have played for this club,” Watkins told BBC Match of the Day.
“You look at the names, so to be up there on the top of that I’m really proud. It’s great achievement.”
This season, Watkins has had to battle for a starting place with Jhon Duran, who then moved to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr for £71m in January, and Marcus Rashford, who joined on loan from Manchester United in the same window.
Watkins had started each of Villa’s first 14 Premier League matches, but was limited to two league starts and three substitute appearances in April, and didn’t start either of Villa’s Champions League quarter-final matches against Paris St-Germain.
With Emery preferring Rashford in the starting XI, speculation was rife that Watkins may leave Villa.
The club had already rejected a £40m bid for the England international from Arsenal in January.
But Rashford was ruled out for the rest of the season last month with a hamstring injury and, since then, Watkins has returned up front to shine again.
“He’s shown his weight in gold,” former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie told Sky Sports.
“It’s not only his goals, but his team play. He works hard off the ball. He was chasing defenders in the last five minutes. He’s always looking what he can do to affect the game – that just shows how important he is.”

Federal election 2025: Teal independent Monique Ryan set for victory in seat of Kooyong
Federal election 2025: Teal independent Monique Ryan set for victory in seat of Kooyong
After over a week since Anthony Albanese and Labor swept to a famous Federal election victory, one of the most hotly contested seats looks set to go to the Teals.
SKY News has called Monique Ryan winning in the seat of Kooyong, providing another body blow for the Liberals.
A week of close counts and false claims, has delivered a desperately close vote count, however the remaining count is likely to allow Ms Ryan to hold her slim lead and retain the seat.
Ms Ryan currently has 50.3 per cent of the vote, leading Liberal Amelia Hamer by just 693 votes.
But with only 5,000 votes to count, and with those votes splitting roughly 50/50, it is all but certain Ms Hamer cannot bridge the gap.
While the margin could tighten, there is enough of a trend to say that Dr Ryan will hold on.
Teal MPs will now hold on to five out of six of their existing seats after losing Goldstein, but will likely fall short of winning an extra seat in Sydney’s Bradfield.
Climate-200 backed candidates have also fallen just short in Bean, Fremantle, Forrest, Flinders, and Monash.
Kooyong has been one of the focus seats during the election with Ms Ryan and Ms Hamer at various points since the election thinking they had won.
“I actually did speak to the team and I said: ‘Look, should I call and concede?’” Ms Hamer told 3AW last Tuesday.
“The team said to me, no, it does look like what’s coming out of pre-poll is much more positive.
“I trust my team and so we hung on.”
Dr Ryan secured the seat of Kooyong at the 2022 election over former federal treasurer Josh Frydenberg.

U.S.-China tariff talks end for the night and will continue Sunday, source says
U.S.-China tariff talks end for the night and will continue Sunday, source says
Sensitive talks between U.S. and ******** delegations over tariffs that threaten to upend the global economy ended after a day of prolonged negotiations and will resume Sunday, a source briefed on the meetings confirmed to CBS News.
There was no immediate indication whether any progress was made Saturday during the more than 10-hour meeting between Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and ******** Vice Premier He Lifeng in Switzerland. The talks, which could help stabilize world markets roiled by the U.S.-China standoff, have been shrouded in secrecy and neither side made comments to reporters on the way out.
Based on Bessent’s interview with Fox News last week, initial discussions were likely about “de-escalation, not about the big trade deal.” The Treasury secretary said the U.S. and China have “shared interests” because the sky-high tariffs imposed by both countries last month are not “sustainable.”
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is also in Switzerland alongside Bessent for the talks.
Several convoys of ****** vehicles left the residence of the Swiss ambassador to the U.N. in Geneva, which hosted the talks aimed at de-escalating trade tensions between the world’s two biggest economies. Diplomats from both sides also confirmed that the talks took place.
The talks were taking place in the sumptuous 18th-century “Villa Saladin” overlooking Lake Geneva. The former estate was bequeathed to the Swiss state in 1973, according to the Geneva government.
The hope is that the two countries will scale back the massive taxes — tariffs — they’ve slapped on each other’s goods, a move that would relieve world financial markets and companies on both sides of the Pacific Ocean that depend on U.S.-China trade.
In an interview with NBC News last week, President Trump claimed ******** officials “want to make a deal very badly. We’ll see how that all turns out, but it’s got to be a fair deal.” The president also said he expected to lower tariffs on China “at some point.”
Meanwhile, ******** officials have said they are open to negotiating with the U.S. on trade, but pushed the Trump administration to drop its “unilateral” tariffs first.
Mr. Trump last month raised U.S. tariffs on China to a combined 145%, and China retaliated by hitting American imports with a 125% levy. Tariffs that high essentially amount to the countries’ boycotting each other’s products, disrupting trade that last year topped $660 billion.
Even before the talks began, Mr. Trump suggested Friday that the U.S. could lower its tariffs on China, saying in a Truth Social post that “80% Tariff seems right! Up to Scott.″
Sun Yun, director of the China program at the Stimson Center, noted it will be the first time He and Bessent have talked. She doubts the Geneva meeting will produce any substantive results.
“The best scenario is for the two sides to agree to de-escalate on the … tariffs at the same time,” she said, adding even a small reduction would send a positive signal. “It cannot just be words.”
Since returning to the White House in January, Mr. Trump has aggressively used tariffs as his favorite economic weapon. He has, for example, imposed a 10% tax on imports from almost every country in the world.
But the fight with China has been the most intense. His tariffs on China include a 20% charge meant to pressure Beijing into doing more to stop the flow of the synthetic opioid fentanyl into the United States. The remaining 125% involve a dispute that dates back to Mr. Trump’s first term and comes atop tariffs he levied on China back then, which means the total tariffs on some ******** goods can exceed 145%.
During Mr. Trump’s first term, the U.S. alleged that claimed China uses unfair tactics to give itself an edge in advanced technologies such as quantum computing and driverless cars. These The allegations include forcing U.S. and other foreign companies to hand over trade secrets in exchange for access to the ******** market; using government money to subsidize domestic tech firms; and outright theft of sensitive technologies.
Those issues were never fully resolved. After nearly two years of negotiation, the United States and China reached a so-called Phase One agreement in January 2020. The U.S. agreed then not to go ahead with even higher tariffs on China, and Beijing agreed to buy more American products. The tough issues — such as China’s subsidies — were left for future negotiations.
But China didn’t come through with the promised purchases, partly because COVID-19 disrupted global commerce just after the Phase One truce was announced.
The fight over China’s tech policy now resumes.
Mr. Trump is also agitated by America’s massive trade deficit with China, which came to $263 billion last year.
In Switzerland on Friday, Bessent and Greer also met with Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter.
Mr. Trump last month suspended plans to slap hefty 31% tariffs on Swiss goods — more than the 20% levies he plastered on exports from European Union. For now, he’s reduced those taxes to 10% but warned he could raise them again.
The government in Bern is taking a cautious approach. But it has warned of the impact on crucial Swiss industries like watches, coffee capsules, cheese and chocolate.
“An increase in trade tensions is not in Switzerland’s interests. Countermeasures against U.S. tariff increases would entail costs for the Swiss economy, in particular by making imports from the USA more expensive,” the government said last week, adding that the executive branch “is therefore not planning to impose any countermeasures at the present time.”
On Saturday, Bessent said trade talks with Switzerland were “very productive,” and he was “optimistic about the speed of these negotiations,” citing Mr. Trump’s trade deal with the U.K. that’s still being finalized.
“I am glad that we have agreed on accelerated trade talks, and we expect that a detailed Swiss proposal will be submitted to Ambassador Greer by next week,” Bessent wrote on social media. “Swiss companies have indicated their interest in investing CHF 150-200 billion in new U.S. investments thanks to President Trump’s policies, and we look forward to our continued talks.”
The U.S. is Switzerland’s second-biggest trading partner after the European Union – the 27-member country bloc that nearly surrounds the wealthy Alpine country of more than 9 million. U.S.-Swiss trade in goods and services has quadrupled over the last two decades, the government said.
The Swiss government said Switzerland abolished all industrial tariffs on Jan. 1 last year, meaning that 99% of all goods from the United States can be imported into Switzerland duty-free.

Australia records unseasonal flu surge, health experts alarmed
Australia records unseasonal flu surge, health experts alarmed
Australia is facing a sharp and early surge in influenza, with more than 63,000 cases already recorded and flu-related deaths rising at their fastest pace in years.
New data shows a 65.7 per cent jump in influenza deaths in 2024 compared to the previous year, with elevated numbers continuing into early 2025, according to the *********** Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
There were 16 influenza-deaths recorded in January this year alone, and almost 10 times that in Covid-related deaths.
ABS figures show that both January and February this year recorded more flu deaths than the same ******* in most previous years, sparking fears of an early and potentially severe influenza season.
Camera IconFlu deaths have spiked across Australia in 2025, well above the five-year average, prompting warnings from health leaders about low vaccination rates. NCA NewsWire / Daniel Pockett Credit: News Corp Australia
The trend has raised alarm among health experts, including director of the World Health Organisation’s Melbourne-based Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza Patrick Reading.
Professor Reading said lab-confirmed cases of the flu had soared across the country since the start of the year.
“What we’ve got here are curves for different seasons … through January, February, March, and April, we’ve actually been tracking at increased numbers, thousands of increased numbers of lab-confirmed influenza in Australia,” Professor Reading said.
“You can see this kind of increasing trend in most of the jurisdictions since January, with a steady increase being observed.”
Traditionally, flu activity in Australia peaks during the winter months. However, this year’s early onset more closely resembles patterns seen in the Northern Hemisphere, including Japan, the ***, and China.
“Coming into the start of this year, so the summer in Australia, coming into autumn, we’ve actually got increased levels of influenza activity in Australia, which sort of correlates with increased activity in the Northern Hemisphere as well.”
Camera IconProfessor Patrick Reading. Credit: Supplied
Influenza A and B viruses are responsible for most seasonal flu outbreaks, but each year sees a different mix of subtypes, making the virus difficult to predict and control.
This year’s influenza vaccines have been updated to better target current strains, particularly the H3N2 subtype.
“The H3N2 component is kind of the problem child of the influenza vaccines,” Professor Reading said.
“It’s the one that needs updating the most to keep up with the mutations that occur in the virus as it circulates around the world.”
He also warned that influenza won’t be the only virus circulating this winter. COVID-19, RSV, norovirus, and strains of avian influenza such as H5N1 are also being closely monitored.
“In 2024, we had the first human case of H5N1 was recorded in Australia from a return traveller from India,” he said.
“That virus was detected and characterised here at our collaborating centre.”
Camera IconAustralia is experiencing an unusually early spike in influenza, with over 63,000 cases and some of the highest January-February death rates in recent years, according to new data. NewsWire / John Appleyard Credit: News Corp Australia
While the avian influenza strain has raised international concern, including a significant outbreak in U.S. dairy herds, there is currently no indication of it spreading between humans.
“The virus is secreted into the milk,” Professor Reading said.
“At the moment, there have been 70 recorded human cases in the US. One death, but no evidence of person-to-person spread, which is really important.”
Professor Reading stressed the importance of vaccination, which he said is the “best way” to reduce the likelihood of hospitalisation and GP visits associated with influenza infections.
Professor Julie Leask, a social scientist with the University of Sydney’s Infectious Diseases Institute, said Australia’s flu vaccination rates remain troublingly low.
“Our influenza vaccination rates in Australia are dire and they’re not improving,” Professor Leask.

She noted that many serious outcomes could be avoided with better uptake of the vaccine.
“The vaccine isn’t perfect, but it’s much better than zero, which is what you’re looking at if you don’t have a vaccine.”
According to new research from the 2025 National Vaccination Insights Project, which surveyed over 2000 adults in March, nearly one-third of Australians haven’t had a flu shot in the past two years.
Infectious diseases physician Dr Paul Griffin said the flu continues to take a heavy toll each year.
“We know that there’s deaths in the order of thousands, hospitalisations around 20,000 every year,” Dr Griffin said.
“It’s not just a flu, it’s a very severe viral infection in its own right and can be life threatening.”
In Australia, the National Immunisation Program provides free flu shots to several groups, including young children, pregnant women, adults 65 and older, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and individuals with certain medical conditions.

Dauphin Island marina hit hard by storm with boat damage and debris (photos)
Dauphin Island marina hit hard by storm with boat damage and debris (photos)
DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (WKRG) — A strong storm roared through Dauphin Island before dawn Saturday morning. It left flooding and several damaged sites in its wake.
The most concentrated damage could be seen at the Dauphin Island Marina. At Capt’n Snapper’s Marina Bar & Grill, the storm blasted through the rear wall of the bar and caved in the ceiling of the kitchen.
LOCATION:
Debris and insulation littered what was the hub of their meal preparation. The owner says they’ll likely be closed until they can get the damage and insurance issues sorted out.
A short distance away, boat owners say the storm pulled two boats from their metal elevated slips into the water.
As of Saturday morning, one boat was still missing. A 2nd boat was tossed into the water and drifted into another slip on the other side of the marina. Its engine was heavily damaged.
Elsewhere on Dauphin Island, the storm knocked over a tree, and it landed on top of a boat and a front porch.
Another, larger tree fell in another yard, completely missing a nearby home.
At the campground, the storm tossed tents and tables outside at least one RV.
The severe weather also snapped a communications tower in two places at the Dauphin Island Public Works building.
As far as we know, no one was hurt in the storms overnight.

US, China officials to resume talks over trade tensions
US, China officials to resume talks over trade tensions
Top United States and ******** officials have wrapped up the first day of talks in Switzerland aimed at defusing trade tensions and plan to resume negotiations on Sunday, a source close to the discussions says.
******** Vice Premier He Lifeng met for about eight hours with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Geneva in their first face-to-face meeting since the world’s two largest economies heaped tariffs well above 100 per cent on each other’s goods.
Neither side made any statements about the substance of the discussions nor signalled any progress towards reducing crushing tariffs as meetings at the residence of Switzerland’s ambassador to the United Nations concluded about 8pm local time.
Bessent, Greer and He were meeting in Geneva after weeks of growing tensions prompted by US President Donald Trump’s tariff blitz starting in February and retaliation from China that has brought nearly $US600 billion ($A935 billion) in annual bilateral trade to a virtual standstill.
The trade dispute, combined with Trump’s decision last month to impose duties on dozens of other countries, has disrupted supply chains, unsettled financial markets and stoked fears of a sharp global downturn.
The location of the talks in the Swiss diplomatic hub was never made public.
However, witnesses saw both delegations returning after a lunch break to the gated UN ambassador’s building, the 18th-century “Villa Saladin,” which has its own private park overlooking Lake Geneva in the leafy suburb of Cologny.
Earlier, US officials including Bessent and Greer smiled as they left their hotel on the way to the talks, wearing red ties and US flags on their lapels.
At the same time, Mercedes vans with tinted windows were seen leaving a hotel where the ******** delegation was staying on the lakeside as runners preparing for a weekend marathon warmed up in the sunshine.
The US is seeking to reduce its $US295 billion goods trade deficit with China and to persuade ******** officials to renounce what the United States says is a mercantilist economic model and contribute more to global consumption, a shift that would require politically sensitive domestic reforms.
******** authorities have pushed back against what they see as external interference.
They want the United States to lower tariffs, clarify what it wants China to buy more of and treat it as an equal on the world stage.
China’s official Xinhua News Agency said in a commentary on Saturday that the United States’ “reckless abuse of tariffs” had destabilised the global economic order but added that the negotiations represented “a positive and necessary step to resolve disagreements and avert further escalation”.
“Whether the road ahead involves negotiation or confrontation, one thing is clear: China’s determination to safeguard its development interests is unshakable and its stance on maintaining the global economic and trade order remains unwavering,” Xinhua said.
With distrust running high, both sides have been keen not to appear weak and economic analysts have low expectations of a breakthrough.
Trump said on Friday that an 80 per cent tariff on ******** goods “seems right,” suggesting for the first time a specific alternative to the 145 per cent levies he has imposed on ******** imports.
He has suggested the discussions were initiated by China.
Officials in Beijing said the United States requested the discussions and that China’s policy of opposing US tariffs had not changed.
China could be looking for the same 90-day waiver on tariffs that the US has given other countries as negotiations take place while any kind of tariff reduction and follow-up talks would be seen as positive by investors.
Swiss Economy Minister Guy Parmelin met both parties in Geneva on Friday and said the fact that the talks were taking place was already a success.
“If a road map can emerge and they decide to continue discussions, that will lower the tensions,” he told reporters on Friday, saying talks could continue into Sunday or even Monday.
Switzerland helped to broker the meeting during recent visits by Swiss politicians to China and the United States.

New Study Shows Surprising Link Between Britain and Bronze Age Settlements
New Study Shows Surprising Link Between Britain and Bronze Age Settlements
A new study has revealed the surprising role British innovation played in spurring Bronze Age civilizations across Europe, according to a new study published in the journal Antiquity.
By analyzing tin ores and other tin artifacts found across Europe and at the site of four separate shipwrecks, scientists identified beyond doubt that the tin originated in England. “This means that tin mined by small farming communities in Cornwall and Devon around 3,300 years ago was being traded to ancient kingdoms and states in the East Mediterranean over 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) away,” explained one of the study’s lead authors, Benjamin Roberts. “This is the first commodity to be exported across the entire continent in British history.”

The discovery puts to rest more than two centuries of speculation from scientists, who long endeavored to figure out how the tin used in Bronze Age communities found its way into Eurasia. Although it was known for a long time that the most accessible tin deposits were located in Devon and Cornwall, scientists had no conclusive evidence to tie those locations to Mediterranean communities.
“There has never been a major research project until now that has scientifically analyzed the tin ores and tin artifacts in south-west Britain as well as the tin deposits in Western and Central Europe,” Williams said.

Scientists were able to make a conclusive geographical match after finding that tin found in one of the shipwrecks, which occurred off the coast of France, dated back to 600 B.C. That tin was then traced back to Cornwall, indicating a trade route which was active for hundreds of years. The results of this new study offer the first conclusive proof that Bronze Age Britain was a crucial supplier of goods and materials to neighboring nations.
“The identification of this trade network, which is likely to have involved tons of tin being moved annually across the continent, radically transforms our understanding of Britain’s social and economic relationships with the far larger and more complex societies in the distant past,” Roberts noted. “The volume, consistency and frequency of the estimated scale in the tin trade is far larger than has been imagined and requires an entirely new perspective on what Bronze Age miners and merchants were able to achieve.”
