Dimon, a rare voice of both support and caution, advised Trump to focus on pro-growth policies, immigration reform, and measured progress on trade, warning against excessive economic sanctions. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon says Donald Trump may have come out of the blocks too fast when it came to tariffs, but says the Oval Office is right to try and fix problems it has identified in the American economy. In Trump’s second term, Dimon has proved something of a critical friend: The Wall Street veteran has cautioned the White House when policy has created too much uncertainty, but has also offered a more balanced outlook on some of the benefits Oval Office policy could provide. On tariffs, Dimon believes the President’s approach initially could have been better—but said overall Trump is justified in enacting what he believes is best for voters. When asked about the “overall approach” when it comes to tariffs, Dimon told Fox in an interview released last night: “I thought it was too large, too big and too aggressive when it started. “It was part of a master plan to get people to the table.” But Dimon added that it’s important for voters to understand that “it’s OK to say if it’s unfair [and] we want to fix it.” On the spectrum of opinion about Trump’s first 100 days in the White House, Dimon has shared a more balanced view than other voices. For example, he has said tariffs are likely to prove only “modestly inflationary” and have the potential to do some “good stuff” for the economy. But the man who was paid $39 million for his work in 2024 also warned policymakers against taking economic sanctions—and combative rhetoric with key trading partners—too far. After President Trump said “friend and foe” would be treated alike under the tariff regime, Dimon wrote in his letter to shareholders earlier this year: “Economics is the longtime glue, and America First is fine, as long as it doesn’t end up being America alone.” Dimon’s typically balanced approach also extended to his take on the recently announced U.K.-U.S. trade deal. While the boss of America’s biggest bank welcomed the much-anticipated “first mover” in Sir Keir Starmer’s British government, he added that the agreement in principle doesn’t constitute a full-scale new deal. Story Continues “I am very happy it took place,” Dimon said. “The tariff stuff … was very big and very large and everybody all at once. I think it’s very important that they start to show progress in the deal, so any progress is good. “These are deals in principle … a real trade deal would be 10 or 20,000 pages long. But any progress is good.” He added he was glad to see the American government making progress with China, with tension on both sides seeming to ease, and positive rumblings out of countries such as Japan and Taiwan. The JPMorgan CEO was asked for any advice he might have for Trump, given that the president previously shared Dimon’s interview with Fox News. He responded: “Keep doing what you’re doing now.” “When you look at it, the border has been successful … after you eliminate the criminal element, I would try to work on real immigration reform. We need seasonal workers, we need a path to citizenship for some of the undocumented but law-abiding immigrants, we need DACA [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals].” He also encouraged Trump to stick to his campaign rhetoric of being pro-growth, pro-deregulation and active on tax reform. “Those things could be very good for the growth of the American economy. I would focus on that,” Dimon added. “There are a lot of other distractions that take place. This administration should focus on those goals. And the tariffs? Wolfspeed reported fiscal third-quarter sales declined and its loss widened as revenue at the chipmaker’s Materials Products division slumped. The struggling firm also added two new board members to help deal with its lenders. In March, Wolfspeed warned that it might not receive money and tax breaks it was to scheduled to get from the CHIPS Act. Wolfspeed (WOLF) shares plunged 25% Friday, a day after the struggling silicone carbide chipmaker’s revenue declined and its loss increased as sales at its Materials Products unit fell. In addition, the company added two new board members as it works to deal with its debt. Wolfspeed reported fiscal third-quarter revenue dropped nearly 8% year-over-year to $185.4 million, missing Visible Alpha estimates. It posted an adjusted loss of $0.72 per share, $0.10 per share wider than a year ago. Materials Products segment revenue tumbled 21% to $77.9 million. Revenue at its Power Products division was up 5% to $107.5 million. Chair Tom Werner explained that Wolfspeed has made significant progress in its efforts in “strengthening our capital structure, improving our path to profitability, and raising cost effective capital to support our growth plan.” Werner added that the company is continuing to work closely with its lenders “on ways to address our capital structure so that Wolfspeed has a strong financial foundation to support its continued success.” The semiconductor firm was already struggling when Werner, then the outgoing interim Executive Chair, warned in March that Wolfspeed may not realize up to $750 million in grants plus $1 billion in tax credits from the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022. That sent shares cratering. In a press release separate from the financial report, Werner announced that Paul Walsh and Mark Jensen were appointed to the board. Werner explained that the two bring experience in dealing with lenders that “will be critical to our efforts in reaching an outcome that will support our long-term success.” Shares of Wolfspeed have lost half their value this year. In the early hours of March 5, 2014, Derek Pfaff was found lying outside his home in Harbor Beach on a mound of blood-covered snow. He was 19 years old at the time, his mom, Lisa Pfaff, previously told PEOPLE. Derek, who was home from college during spring break, was found by his father, Jerry Pfaff, and the family rushed him to a local hospital. “He was in shorts and his T-shirt from what he had on that night, and the gun laying next to him,” Lisa recalled to WXYZ Detroit in a recent interview. “He had no face. There was no face, it was a gunshot wound right to his head and Jerry put him in the vehicle face down, which really was the first miracle, because if he would have put him face up in the vehicle, he would’ve drowned on the blood and choked to death on the two and a half miles just to get to our hospital,” she continued. Derek miraculously survived the gunshot wound, but his face was severely affected. He had lost an eye, no longer had a nose and his teeth and lips were mostly gone. He underwent 58 surgeries from 2014 through 2020, at which point his doctors told him there was nothing left they could do, per WXYZ. “I didn’t go out in public,” Derek told the outlet. “People would point and, you know, call him names, and it was just so hard,” Lisa added. Derek, a former high school football star, told WXYZ that prior to the suicide attempt, he put a lot of “pressure” on himself academically, but often kept his feelings “private.” “I kept … my feelings and emotions inside. I didn’t want to talk to anyone about it. I wish I would have now — mom, dad — whoever, got off my chest. I would have felt so much better,” he said. He and his family then received word that a donor had become available in February 2024. After an extensive surgery that same year and numerous follow-up procedures, Derek now has a fully functioning face again. Derek is the second person to ever receive a face transplant at the Mayo Clinic, and one of only about 50 people to have received the procedure worldwide, per the clinic. Lisa called Derek’s transplant “miraculous” and said he looked “amazing” in a GoFundMe set up to cover Derek’s extensive medical expenses. Lisa also shared that Derek underwent an additional follow-up surgery — making it his 65th surgery total since 2014 — on May 2, per the fundraising page. They unveiled a plaque at Rosemundy House in St Agnes – formerly a home for unmarried mothers – while calling for a formal “adoption apology” from the government. Dr Phil Frampton, who was born at the Rosemundy Mother and Baby Home in 1953, said: “We want an apology, not only for the mothers but also for their children who suffered.” Lyn Rodden, from Camborne, who was one of those forced to give up her baby, said: “It means everything that we’ve been recognised at last.” ‘Struggle for an apology’ It is estimated up to 250,000 women in Britain were forced to give up their babies in the decades after World War Two. Campaigners also want “restorative actions” from the government, such as providing counselling and search support for mothers and those forcibly adopted. Dr Frampton, a member of the Rosemundy Commemoration Committee, said he spent years in foster care after he was separated from his mother as a baby. She said she was forced to get on a train and take her son to Bath to be adopted. Ms Rodden said: “For everybody else the parents came here and took them away from here, but I had to get on a train and take my son up to Bath, and leave him in an office. “A woman just came out and said ‘name’ and ‘I’ll take the baby’ and she took him into the back office, came out and said ‘hurry up’ she said, ‘catch your train’ she said, ‘and back to St Agnes, you’ll be there for another six weeks’. “That was it. I cried all the way home…” Lyn Rodden gave birth at the Rosemundy Mother and Baby Home in 1956 Ms Rodden said she was eventually reunited with her son 50 years later when he found her. “[It was] like the final piece of a jigsaw being fitted,” she said. Soviet-era spacecraft hits ocean after 50 years in orbit Soviet-era spacecraft hits ocean after 50 years in orbit May 10 (UPI) — A Soviet-area spacecraft that orbited Earth for more than 50 years crashed into the Indian Ocean on Saturday, Russian officials confirmed. “The Kosmos-482 spacecraft, launched in 1972, ceased to exist, deorbiting and falling into the Indian Ocean,” the Russian State Space Corporation Roscosmos said on the cloud-based social media platform Telegram. The spacecraft hit the ocean around 9:24 a.m. MST Saturday, or 2:24 a.m. EDT. “The descent of the spacecraft was monitored by the Automated Warning System for Hazardous Situations in Near-Earth Space,” according to the Roscosmos post. The spacecraft fell into the Indian Ocean somewhere west of Jakarta, initially entering the planet’s atmosphere some 380 miles west of the Middle Andaman Islands in the Andaman Sea. The European Space Agency tracked the satellite over Germany shortly after 2 a.m. EDT Saturday before it disappeared from radar. In the spring of 1972, the Soviet Institute for Space Research launched Kosmos 482 with the goal of studying and eventually landing on Venus. “But due to a malfunction of the booster block, it remained in a high elliptical orbit of the Earth, gradually approaching the planet,” Roscosmos said in the post. The spacecraft was one of several launched with a goal of studying Venus under the Soviet-era Venera program. Scientists have long been curious about the similarities between Venus and Earth. Both planets are considered “geographically young” and have nearly the same size and mass. In 2023, NASA scientists discovered volcanic activity on Venus, after looking closer at photos taken of the planet in the 1990s by the Magellan robotic space probe. Earlier that year, officials with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory discovered new geological patterns that gave further insight into how the planet releases heat.
