Panama’s ex-president departs for asylum in Colombia
Colombia has granted asylum to Panama’s former president Ricardo Martinelli, who has departed the Nicaraguan embassy in Panama City for Colombia, the Panamanian government says.
Martinelli, who was sentenced to more than a decade in prison in Panama for money laundering, has been living in the Nicaraguan embassy in Panama City since February 2024, after Panama’s Supreme Court confirmed his sentence.
Panamanian authorities said in a statement they offered the ex-president safe passage from the embassy to a local airport in “full compliance with the obligations set forth in the 1928 Convention on Asylum and the 1933 Convention on Political Asylum”.
Colombia’s foreign ministry said the granting of asylum to Martinelli was “part of Colombia’s humanist tradition of protecting people who are persecuted for political reasons”.
Martinelli is a businessman and supermarket magnate who governed Panama from 2009 to 2014, a ******* of rapid economic growth driven by the construction of major projects such as the first metro in Central America and the expansion of the interoceanic canal.
But his government was tainted by accusations of bribery and cost overruns. He was sanctioned by the United States for corruption in January 2023.
Martinelli maintains his prosecution was politically motivated as he sought to run for a second term of office.
In 2023, he won his party’s nomination to seek the presidency again. However, he was convicted of money laundering, and after the Supreme Court denied his appeal, he was ineligible to run.
Ultimately, Martinelli supported his running mate, current President Jose Raul Mulino.

‘This is healthy’: Nationals leader David Littleproud welcomes challenge
‘This is healthy’: Nationals leader David Littleproud welcomes challenge
Nationals leader David Littleproud is backing his record to hold on to the federal party’s top job as he faces a challenge from a fellow Queenslander.
The minor coalition party faces a leadership tussle after Queensland senator Matt Canavan threw his hat in the ring.
Mr Littleproud welcomed the challenge, applauding his colleague for having the courage to put up his hand.
“We shouldn’t get upset about democracy taking place,” he told Nine’s Today Show on Sunday.
“This is healthy for our democracy.”
Mr Littleproud backed in his record to retain the leadership, which he has held since May 2022, after challenging former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce following the coalition’s election loss.
The Liberal-National coalition again suffered a significant loss on May 3, with Labor holding a strong majority in the House of Representatives.
Mr Littleproud’s pitch on his record includes leading the ‘No’ campaign on the Voice to Parliament, calling for nuclear energy and pushing for divestment to stop supermarkets from “taking advantage” of farmers.
“I’m proud of my record. I’m comfortable in my own skin, but it’s the partyroom’s decision,” he said.
“Whatever happens, happens, but I’m still committed to the National Party and all that we’ve done and all that we will achieve.”
Mr Canavan put himself forward for the role on Friday after praising Mr Littleproud’s time as leader, but argued the party needed to bring back its “fighting spirit”.
He said he would scrap the Nationals’ support for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and call for new housing supply and economic development in the regions if chosen as leader.
Mr Littleproud said the leadership spill process would hopefully result in a strong opposition but should be resolved by the end of this week to “get on with the job”.
The Liberal Party will also choose a new leader after Peter Dutton was dumped from his long-held Queensland seat of Dickson at the polls.
Deputy leader Sussan Ley and shadow treasurer Angus Taylor have confirmed their candidacies for a partyroom vote due on Tuesday.

Southern California braces for hottest weather of the year so far
Southern California braces for hottest weather of the year so far
AccuWeather.com
Downtown Los Angeles and surrounding areas of Southern California will experience a brief taste of summer this weekend as temperatures soar to the highest levels yet this year, AccuWeather forecasters say.
The same pattern responsible for bringing a surge of summerlike weather to the North Central states will also boost temperatures across California but for a shorter ******* of time. Highs will be 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit above historical averages through Sunday.
Temperatures in downtown Los Angeles are expected to peak in the mid 90s F late Saturday, near the daily record of 95 degrees set in 1934. If reached, it would mark L.A.’s first 90-degree day of the year. This is right on track with climatology as the mean first 90-degree day in the City of Angels is May 9.
GET THE FREE ACCUWEATHER AP
Burbank, California, will approach the century mark at the start of the weekend, likely smashing the daily record of 95 set in 1981. Palm Springs, California, a typical hot spot with a historical average high in the lower 90s at this time of the year, may approach 110.
“It will definitely feel summerlike,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Gwen Fieweger said, adding that anyone participating in outdoor activities will need to take precautions to lessen the risk of heat-related illnesses.
AccuWeather.com
Those looking to beat the heat may want to head to the coast, where some fog and a sea breeze will keep temperatures lower than areas farther inland, Fieweger noted.
The sizzling conditions will extend northward into California’s Central Valley, with Fresno also getting a taste of near-record high temperatures on Saturday.
Some cooling will begin to arrive on Sunday as a storm drops southward into the Northwest, but temperatures will stay above historical averages.
AccuWeather.com
“Starting Monday, a more notable cooldown will take place,” Fieweger said. Temperatures throughout Central and Southern California will return to levels more typical of the middle of May then drop farther by Tuesday to readings 5-10 degrees below the historical average.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning: Tom Cruise’s marquee stunt might be his most ambitious yet
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning: Tom Cruise’s marquee stunt might be his most ambitious yet
Over the course of seven Mission: Impossible movies, Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise has clung from the Burj Khalifa and hung from an Airbus 400 as it took off.
After a career performing the most insane stunts himself, Cruise is already one of one when it comes to action heroes, but the marquee stunt sequence in what could be his last Mission: Impossible movie, Final Reckoning, might be his most ambitious yet.
And that’s saying something, considering he literally jumped a motorcycle off a Norwegian cliff and parachuted to safety in the previous instalment of the evergreen franchise.
Final Reckoning follows the events of 2023’s Dead Reckoning Part One, which saw Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and his IMF team traverse the globe to find the key to destroying an AI adversary, codenamed “the Entity”.
Said key’s final resting place turned out to be inside a Russian submarine at the bottom of the Bering Sea under the polar ice cap, which meant Cruise and long-time M: I director Christopher McQuarrie had to figure out how Hunt would retrieve it.
This involved a multi-year process to build one of the most elaborate sets in movie-making history, recreating the hull of the Sevastopol submarine inside a purpose-built dive tank in London, with a capacity of nine million litres.
To roll the sub as demanded by the script, ensuring Hunt is subjected to the maximum amount of stress for the audience’s amusement, the tank was fitted with a gargantuan twin-tower gimbal made from over 1000 tons of steel and standing as tall as six London buses stacked on top of each other.
Camera IconTom Cruise on the set of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Credit: Gareth Gatrell/Gareth Gatrell
When the cameras started rolling, the gimbal was capable of moving 500 tons with a degree of precision measured in millimetres.
Shooting underwater is notoriously difficult, but Cruise and McQuarrie felt they had unfinished business after being unsatisfied with the result of an underwater set-piece in 2015’s Rogue Nation.
For that movie, Cruise trained himself to hold his breath underwater for six-and-a-half minutes, so you’d think being able to wear an oxygen mask in Final Reckoning made the task easier.
Think again. The design of the mask prioritised being able to see the 62-year-old actor’s face, which resulted in compromises to how much oxygen was available.
This meant Cruise was completing 75-minute dives to get the shot, in itself astonishing, while receiving only 65 per cent of the usual levels of oxygen a diver would get.
McQuarrie was constantly concerned that the face of the franchise would suffer hypoxia during filming, a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when the body is starved of oxygen at a tissue level.
However, the director was able to keep a close eye on his star because he was in the tank, too.
Camera IconTom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie on the set of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Credit: Antonio Olmos/Antonio Olmos
Typically, directors remain on dry land during underwater sequences, with actors coming back to the surface to receive instructions between takes, which is a time-consuming process.
It’s a process that usually allows around six set-ups to be filmed per day, but the production got that up to 22 set-ups a day by McQuarrie taking scuba lessons and communicating with Cruise underwater via their own sign language.
The end result is a visceral sequence that places the audience inside the Sevastopol with Cruise in yet another world-saving mission, should they choose to accept it.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is in cinemas May 17.

Pope Leo XIV celebrates first Mass as details emerge of how votes coalesced in secret conclave
Pope Leo XIV celebrates first Mass as details emerge of how votes coalesced in secret conclave
******** CITY (AP) — Pope Leo XIV said Friday that his election was both a cross to bear and a blessing as he celebrated his first Mass and details began to emerge of how votes swiftly coalesced to make him history’s first American pope.
Freed from their conclave, cardinals began describing the hours leading up to the final ballot Thursday afternoon that brought Leo past the two-thirds majority needed. Many marveled that the Chicago-born Augustinian missionary Robert Prevost reached the threshold so quickly, given the vast diversity of voters and the traditional taboo against a U.S. pope because of the secular power the country wields.
“It is a miracle of the Holy Spirit,” said Cardinal Fernando Natalio Chomalí Garib, archbishop of Santiago, Chile. He noted that 133 men who barely knew one another from 70 countries came to an agreement in just over 24 hours. A miracle, he said, “and also an example for all our countries where nobody comes to an agreement.”
Leo presided over his first Mass before those same cardinal electors Friday morning, speaking off-the-cuff in English in the Sistine Chapel. He acknowledged the great responsibility they had placed on him before delivering a brief but dense homily in Italian on the need to joyfully spread Christianity in a world that often mocks it.
“You have called me to carry that cross and to be blessed with that mission, and I know I can rely on each and every one of you to walk with me as we continue as a church, as a community, as friends of Jesus, as believers, to announce the good news, to announce the Gospel,” he said.
Leo on Saturday meets with cardinals formally. On Sunday, he is set to deliver his first noon blessing from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica while his formal installation Mass was set for May 18.
The Americans share some details
There seemed to be mixed messages coming from a briefing with American cardinals who saw one of their own become the 267th pope. Before they arrived, the auditorium at the U.S. seminary up the hill from the ******** blasted “Born in the U.S.A.” and “American Pie.”
But more conservative cardinals seemed to distance Leo from both his citizenship and the political polemics of the Trump administration back home. They pointed to the decades Prevost spent as a missionary in Peru and said, regardless, he has a new identity now.
“Where he comes from is sort of now a thing of the past,” said New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who had been President Donald Trump’s pick for pope. “Robert Francis Prevost is no longer around. It’s now Pope Leo.”
But Cardinal Joseph Tobin, an old friend of Prevost’s who repeatedly called him “Bob,” said he expected the pope would be true to himself. He said that was the advice conveyed to all the electors by the retired preacher of the papal household, Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, who delivered a meditation in the Sistine Chapel before they took their first vote.
Tobin revealed that he had warned Prevost of his real chances of winning in the days before the voting began. But Tobin recounted the moment when saw it had sunk in for Prevost himself: Tobin had just cast his ballot before Michelangelo’s “The Last Judgment'” and was returning to his seat when he saw Prevost.
“And he had his head in his hands,” Tobin said. “And I was praying for him because I couldn’t imagine what happens to a human being when you’re facing something like that.”
“And then when he accepted it, it was like he was made for it,” Tobin said.
A papal Mass
The cardinals urged the public and faithful to give Leo time to get used to his new role before trying to understand what kind of pope he will be.
But some clues were already apparent. Two women delivered the readings of Scripture at the start of Leo’s Mass, perhaps an indication of an intention to continue Francis’ focus on expanding women’s role in the church. As a cardinal, Leo put into practice one of Francis’ most revolutionary reforms by having three women serve on the ******** board that vets bishop nominations.
Speaking in near-perfect Italian, Leo lamented that the Christian faith in many parts of the world is “considered absurd,” mocked or opposed in the face of temptations such as money, success and power. He complained that in many places Jesus is misunderstood, “reduced to a kind of charismatic leader or superman.”
“This is true not only among nonbelievers but also among many baptized Christians, who thus end up living, at this level, in a state of practical atheism,” he said. “A lack of faith is often tragically accompanied by the loss of meaning in life, the neglect of mercy, appalling violations of human dignity, the crisis of the family and so many other wounds that afflict our society.”
The cardinals applauded as the Mass concluded. Leo was seen wearing simple ****** shoes — eschewing, as Francis did, the red loafers of the papacy preferred by some traditionalist popes.
In another signal he might break with tradition, Leo spent his first night as pontiff in his residence in the Sant’Uffizio Palace, and not the Apostolic Palace where popes traditionally reside, ******** News reported. Francis chose to live in an apartment in the Santa Maria guesthouse.
How did it happen? English helped
Cardinals revealed that they got to know Prevost during the preconclave discussions, not because he made some showstopping speech like Pope Francis did in 2013. Then, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio spoke about the need for the church to go to the “existential peripheries” to find wounded souls and was elected a short time later.
“It wasn’t that he got up and made some overwhelmingly convincing speech that just wowed the body,” said Cardinal Wilton Gregory, the retired archbishop of Washington, D.C.
This time, Prevost made an impression with his manner, in small groups. Although Italian had always been the primary language of past conclaves, this time English seemed to prevail, participants said.
******* Cardinal Reinhard Marx, a close adviser of Francis, said he took note of the man who would become pope — an American with deep experience in Latin America, strong linguistic and cultural fluency, and a history of leadership as superior of the Augustinians.
“That convinced me to say this could be a possibility,” Marx told reporters Friday. “I can tell you, I’m very happy.”
Marx also recalled meeting the future pope last year and being struck by his temperament.
“We had a very good conversation,” he said. “I realized he’s a man who listens, takes arguments seriously, weighs them. You can’t just place him into one camp — he really tries to build bridges. I liked that very much.”

JD Vance said the India-Pakistan conflict was ‘none of our business’
JD Vance said the India-Pakistan conflict was ‘none of our business’
Vice President JD Vance was the one to call Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to encourage ceasefire talks over the escalating conflict with Pakistan after the U.S. received “alarming intelligence,” according to a report.
The vice president, Secretary of State and interim national security adviser Marco Rubio, and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles were compelled to increase America’s role in the conflict after receiving the intelligence Friday morning, CNN reports.
It marked a change of position for Vance, who said that the dangerous conflict between the two nuclear powers was “none of our business.”
Trump administration officials did not share further details of the intelligence with the network but said it was “critical” in persuading the three to act.
The vice president, Secretary of State and interim national security adviser Marco Rubio, and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles were compelled to increase America’s role in the conflict after receiving the intelligence Friday morning, according to the report. (AP)
After reportedly briefing President Donald Trump on the latest developments and their plan of action, Vance then called Modi at noon E.T. on Friday, telling him the White House believed there was a high probability for dramatic escalation, the report says.
CNN also reports that Vance outlined to Modi a “potential off-ramp” that the U.S. understood the Pakistanis would be amenable to. Further details of that were not disclosed.
“Vance encouraged Modi to have his country communicate with Pakistan directly and to consider options for de-escalation, the officials said,” according to CNN.
Rubio and State Department officials reportedly “worked through the night” liaising with their counterparts in India and Pakistan.
The Trump administration’s role was largely to get the two sides talking, rather than drafting the ceasefire agreement, officials told CNN.
Days before, Vance gave an interview on Fox News where he said America should not get too involved.
Just a few hours after the ceasefire agreement, the countries accused each other of violating it after explosions were heard over two cities in India-administered Kashmir. (AFP via Getty Images)
“What we can do is try to encourage these folks to de-escalate a little bit, but we’re not going to get involved in the middle of war that’s fundamentally none of our business and has nothing to do with America’s ability to control it,” Vance said Thursday.
“You know, America can’t tell the Indians to lay down their arms,” Vance said. “We can’t tell the Pakistanis to lay down their arms. And so, we’re going to continue to pursue this thing through diplomatic channels.”
The Independent has contacted the White House for comment.
Trump announced Saturday morning U.S. time that India and Pakistan agreed to a “full and immediate ceasefire” after America mediated the talks.
“Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence,” the president posted on Truth Social, claiming credit for brokering the peace.
While Pakistan expressed gratitude for the U.S. involvement, India’s foreign secretary Vikram Misri said two countries worked “directly” to reach the deal.
Just a few hours later, the countries accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement after explosions were heard over two cities in India-administered Kashmir.

Danny Dyer continued rehab after letter from daughter Dani
Danny Dyer continued rehab after letter from daughter Dani
Danny Dyer has said receiving a letter from his daughter Dani while at a rehab facility in 2016 was what convinced him to continue his treatment.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, the actor said he’d “had enough” of the treatment he’d received and was “going to go”.
“Then they read a letter out from home, from my daughter Dani, and it made me sit back down in that seat,” he told presenter Lauren Laverne.
Whilst he did not share what his then 20-year-old daughter had written, he said he “grew up and understood this is my life and fame and all that stuff is toxic”.
Dyer said the letter from Dani made him reflect on the pain he’d caused his family and commit to continuing his treatment at the facility in South Africa.
Dani Dyer shot to fame on Love Island, winning the 2018 series. She and her father have since appeared together on Celebrity Gogglebox, an Italian travel series, and on their podcast Sorted With The Dyers.
Danny Dyer, who shot to fame in the 1999 film Human Traffic, has gone on to become one of the most recognisable stars of British TV and film.
In his interview, the 47-year-old spoke about how fame has affected his personal life, leading him to make “a lot of bad decisions”.
He said at one stage of his career, he was “doing a lot of drugs”.
“I’d go to nightclubs and DJ sometimes but in general just wave off of balconies and I’d get paid quite a lot of money to do it,” he added.
Dyer says looking back is “awful” and that his days of “hedonism” and “mad behaviour” are over.
He said one of his turning points came in 2013, when he was offered the role of Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter in EastEnders, which he says he took because he “had no money”.
“I had bailiffs [coming round], no-one would hire me and the more I’m doing these club appearances, the more drugs I’m taking, and drink, so I’m in this weird spiral.”
Four years later, he made the decision to go to rehab in Cape Town during an awards show after-party at his house.
“I remember I had this moment where I was sitting in my ensuite trying to work out how to put a pair of jeans on – I was that off my head.
“I looked up, I looked at my wife and I could just see how tired she looked and I could hear kids running around downstairs, and I thought ‘I need to sort my life out’,” he added.
Dyer says it made him realise how addiction “affects so many people around you, not just yourself”.
Dyer, who is nominated for best male comedy performance at Sunday’s Bafta TV Awards for his role in Mr. Bigstuff, has also experienced success with Disney hit Rivals this year.
He said a lot of the work he took in the early stages of his career was due to the lack of money he had and the added pressure of becoming a first-time parent with his now-wife Joanne at the age of 19.
“I’d made a few films but I just wasn’t getting paid any money and I was desperate to get on the property ladder,” he said.
“I was still living on a council estate with my daughter and Jo.”
Dyer says he then got offered a documentary series in 2006 called The Real Football Factories and “couldn’t believe the money that was offered to me”.
“I can’t watch them back now [the documentaries], I cringe at them, but I needed to earn money, I needed to get a house and I needed to the right thing,” he added.

Fastest sinking city in the US is revealed in new study and it’s not in Florida
Fastest sinking city in the US is revealed in new study and it’s not in Florida
A new study reveals that one major U.S. city is sinking faster than any other—and it’s not in the Sunshine State.
Researchers from the Columbia Climate School’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory published their findings in the Nature Cities journal on Thursday.
The study focused on the 28 most populous cities across the country, each home to more than 600,000 Americans. Recent satellite data was used to monitor land movement down to the millimeter.
In a staggering twist, the study’s authors found that in 25 of the cities, two-thirds or more of their land was sinking. All of the 28 cities experienced some degree of land subsidence.
One city had sunk lower than any other: Houston.

According to the study, approximately 40 percent of Houston’s area subsided more than five millimeters per year, and about 12 percent was sinking at double that rate. Some localized spots were found to be sinking as much as 50 millimeters per year.
Other major Texas cities were also found to be sagging deeper into the earth. Dallas and Fort Worth were found to be experiencing subsidence at rates above three millimeters per year in 70 percent of their total areas.
Ten percent of the area in Chicago and New York City was also found to be sinking at a rate of three millimeters per year.
Researchers said about 34 million people—about 10 percent of the U.S. population—are in the subsidence zones. More than 29,000 buildings in the cities analyzed were found to be at very high risk of damage.

Factors such as groundwater pumping and oil extraction are causing land to cave in on itself, which poses an infrastructure risk in major urban areas. Researchers noted that buildings can be “silently” compromised over time, with damage only potentially noticeable when it is “catastrophic. “
“Unlike flood-related subsidence hazards, where risks manifest only when high rates of subsidence lower the land elevation below a critical threshold, subsidence-induced infrastructure damage can occur even with minor changes in land motion,” the study’s authors write.
The study said that the extraction of groundwater is likely the cause of subsidence in Houston, the worst-impacted city.
As cities continue to expand, populations increase, and climate change worsens, areas are likely to continue sinking.
Droughts, for example, can dry out soil in cities like Houston, leading to further groundwater extraction, continuing the cycle.
A separate 2023 study found that New York City is gradually sinking partly because of the weight of its skyscrapers.
Meanwhile, Galveston, Texas, is experiencing rapidly rising sea levels, outpacing other coastal cities such as Miami, Florida, and Charleston, South Carolina.
New Orleans, Louisiana, is rapidly subsiding at up to 50 millimeters per year. The coastal metropolis is built on soft, marshy land.
