(AP) — As 18-year-old Bobby Gumpright rode his bike home from his bartending job in New Orleans in 1999, he began to concoct a story about why he didn’t have any money. In the throes of addiction and not wanting to admit he had spent his paycheck on drugs, Gumpright lied to his father and said a ****** man had robbed him at gunpoint. The fabrication spun out of control when a detective, armed with photos of potential suspects, asked Gumpright to point to the culprit. Across town, Jermaine Hudson, a 20-year-old ****** man, was pulled over for a traffic stop and taken into custody. He figured he would soon be released to go home to his pregnant wife and 10-month-old daughter. Instead, he was charged with a crime he didn’t commit. Even though two jurors didn’t believe Gumpright’s story, Hudson was found guilty by a split jury, a practice that 20 years later would be deemed unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, which acknowledged its origins from racist Jim Crow laws. Nearly 1,000 people convicted by split juries remain in prison in Louisiana. Now, 25 years after Gumpright’s lies sent Hudson to prison, the two unlikely friends are sharing their story in a push for legislation to give some of those people a chance to have their cases retired. A split decision As Hudson sat in the courtroom in 2001, he grappled with a reality that he didn’t create. “Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought my life would have been at a standstill … missing out on my kids’ life, on my life,” Hudson told The Associated Press last month. Two witnesses testified: the officer who responded to the 911 call and Gumpright. As Gumpright took the stand, Hudson prayed the stranger would acknowledge the wrongful allegation and his nightmare would end. A prosecutor asked Gumpright, who is white, if he was sure it was Hudson who robbed him. He responded, “110%.” In a 10-2 vote, the jury convicted Hudson of armed robbery. The judge sentenced him to 99 years in prison. A practice rooted in racism At the time of Hudson’s trial, only Louisiana and Oregon allowed convictions if one or two jurors disagreed. Louisiana adopted the practice in 1898, fueled by efforts to maintain white supremacy after the Civil War. Diluting the voice of ****** jurors allowed the often-white majority to determine the outcome. In 2018, Louisiana voters did away with the use of nonunanimous jury convictions, two years before the Supreme Court ruling. Of the 1,500 people in Louisiana prisons from split jury convictions at that time, about 80% were ****** and most were serving life sentences, according to a Project of Justice Initiative analysis. Following the high court decision, Oregon’s Supreme Court granted new trials to hundreds of people. But Louisiana’s Supreme Court rejected arguments to apply the ruling retroactively, leaving people like Hudson locked up with scarce legal options or waiting on a miracle. Waiting 22 years for freedom Years of Hudson’s life dwindled away as he missed the birth of his second daughter, graduations and other milestones. He prayed Gumpright would “come forward with the truth.” “This can’t be my final destination. This can’t be the end of my life,” Hudson often thought. Gumpright tried to numb his guilt with drugs and alcohol, but it never went away. “I was either gonna kill myself or I was gonna come forward,” he told the AP. In 2021, Hudson was preparing to take a new deal: plead guilty to armed robbery in exchange for a sentence of time served. Just days before the bargain was finalized, Hudson received news he long waited for. Gumpright, who had entered a drug treatment facility, had come clean about his lies. After spending 22 years behind bars, Hudson was released. A few months later, Gumpright answered a phone call from a blocked number. “I bet you never thought you’d hear from me,” Hudson said. Fixing an injustice A packed committee room at the state Capitol fell silent last month as a man wearing a suit and tie took to the microphone. “My name is Bobby Gumpright,” he said, his hand trembling. “I come before you as a citizen of Louisiana. … I’m also a man who lives each day with the consequences of a terrible sin.” Gumpright told lawmakers his story, the true one. Sitting behind him was Hudson. The pair first met in New Orleans, six months after Hudson’s release. They have spent the past two years advocating for a bill that would give inmates convicted by split juries the opportunity to ask for a retrial. The measure does not automatically grant a retrial. The duo say their story is an example of how an innocent man can be imprisoned for decades under an unconstitutional practice and that it’s never too late to right a wrong. “I couldn’t change the past, but I could refuse to live the lie any longer while injustice continued,” Gumpright told lawmakers. “Louisiana can’t change the past. But Louisiana can refuse to let its injustice live on.” The measure failed last year, but a legislative committee backed a similar bill in April. It still needs approval from the governor, House and Senate, which could debate it this week People cheered as the bill cleared its first hurdle. Gumpright and Hudson hugged, holding each other up, as they cried tears of joy. An unlikely bond Both men said they needed one another to heal. Hudson wanted to know why Gumpright lied. Gumpright sought forgiveness. “I’m not the type of man to hold grudges or to hate anyone,” Hudson said. “I have a forgiving heart. And in order for me to really move on I forgave him, because I understood what he was going through.” Sober for four years, Gumpright, 44, is now an addiction counselor. Hudson, 47, moved to Texas, got married, bought a house, is starting a business and spends time with his two grandsons. Gumpright attended Hudson’s housewarming and met his family. They text each other words of encouragement every day and keep photos of each other close by. “My friend? A few weeks ago at a dive bar in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, someone slugged him in the face, sending him to the hospital. But whatever the consequences of his convictions, he insists he isn’t scared. “The United States has my back,” he said. Mr. Boassen, 51, a former bricklayer, is a fervid supporter of President Trump. He campaigned for him in the United States and helped coordinate Donald Trump Jr.’s visit to Greenland this year. On his coffee table at home, three pristine MAGA hats occupy a place of honor. While his championing of the American president — who has vowed to take over Greenland “one way or the other” — has made Mr. Boassen unpopular at home, it has also turned him into an unlikely political player in the Arctic, a region of growing importance in a warming world eager for its untapped resources. As he lounged on a couch in his apartment on the edge of Nuuk, wearing a pink T-shirt emblazoned with Mr. Trump’s face, his phone buzzed with a stream of texts from journalists and filmmakers who wanted to talk and investors who hoped he was their ticket to riches in Greenland. In the debate about the future of the world’s largest island, a semiautonomous overseas territory of Denmark, Mr. Boassen has made it his mission to bring Greenland and the United States closer together. Still, Mr. Boassen noted he “doesn’t always agree” with the American president. While Mr. Trump wants to claim the island for the United States, Mr. Boassen is pushing instead for a tight security alliance between an independent Greenland and Washington. That has made him one of the most visible Greenlanders agitating to break with Denmark. “Denmark has failed again and again,” he said. “They are not up to the challenge of defending Greenland.” He has cultivated high-level contacts in Greenland’s government and has spent the past few months working full time for an organization promoting closer U.S.-Greenland ties. “Greenland’s future looks brightest with America,” Mr. Boassen said. His transformation from bricklayer to political player began by posting prolifically on social media in support of Mr. Trump: sharing memes, defending him in comment threads and explaining his politics to a Greenlandic audience. Last year, those posts caught the eye of Tom Dans, a former Trump adviser for Arctic affairs. “I got curious,” Mr. Dans said in an interview. “There aren’t many people in that part of the world standing up for Trump.” Mr. Dans, who used to work at the conservative Heritage Foundation, sponsored Mr. Boassen to attend a Trump campaign event in Pittsburgh last fall. During the final stretch, Mr. Boassen went door to door for Mr. Trump in Pennsylvania. The Greenlander says he loves Mr. Trump’s direct communication style and that “he’s a good person, once you study him.” Born in Qaqortoq, a small coastal town in southern Greenland, Mr. Boassen was raised by a single mother and maternal grandmother with little money, in a modest home with little heat — a markedly different upbringing from that of his political idol. A quiet child, he became fascinated with politics through VHS tapes, books and television — “the only way to see the outside world,” he said. After drifting through a string of jobs, he settled on bricklayer, building houses in Denmark. But after being discovered on social media, he now serves as Greenland director for American Daybreak, a nonprofit organization founded by Mr. Dans that promotes closer U.S.-Greenland ties. He and Mr. Dans say that he met Mr. Trump Jr. at the campaign’s election night party, where he suggested a future visit to Greenland. Though Mr. Boassen said he doesn’t have direct access to Mr. Trump Jr., he said he communicates with the Trump team through Mr. Dans. In March, American Daybreak helped promote a visit by Usha Vance, Vice President JD Vance’s wife, to Greenland’s national dog sled race. But after reports of planned protests by Greenlandic activists, the visit was changed to a brief stop by the Vances at a remote U.S. military outpost on the island. Despite its ambitions, American Daybreak’s website still reads, “Coming soon,” and its social media presence is limited to photographs of Mr. Dans in Greenland and Mr. Boassen posing with figures like Nigel Farage, Conor McGregor and Senator Ted Cruz. Although many of Greenland’s 56,000 people want independence, a recent opinion poll showed 85 percent of them didn’t want to become part of the United States. President Trump has floated changing the name of the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Gulf ahead of a trip to the Middle East next week, a move that infuriated Iran and its people. “I’ll have to make a decision,” Mr. Trump said in the Oval Office on Wednesday. “I don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings. By suggesting the name change, Mr. Trump has seemingly done the impossible: Unite Iranians of all political, ideological and religious factions. They have spoken out in statements and social media posts, condemning Mr. Trump’s idea. Can Trump really rename the Gulf? Mr. Trump has the power to order changes to geographical names as they are used in the United States. But other countries do not have to honor those changes. This year, he issued an executive order to update the government’s Geographic Names Information System in order to change all references for the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. (On Friday, President Claudia Sheinbaum said the ******** government had sued Google over its decision to abide by Mr. Trump’s order.) The U.S. Board on Geographic Names currently mandates use of the Persian Gulf for official U.S. business. Globally, the International Hydrographic Organization works to standardize and chart marine boundaries. But the organization told The New York Times this year that there was “no formal international agreement or protocol in place for naming maritime areas.” How have Iranians reacted? Mr. Trump’s idea drew condemnation from a broad cross-section of Iranians, who are often divided on many topics. “It goes beyond politics; it goes beyond religious divisions and ideologies — it’s about the nation and its history, and it has hit a chord,” said the historian Touraj Daryaee, director of the Center for Persian Studies at the University of California-Irvine. “Does Trump want to negotiate with Iran or does he want to take away its national identity?” Mr. Daryaee said that since ancient times Iranians have referred to their nation as “ab o khakh,” which means “water and earth.” Two bodies of water — the Persian Gulf in the south and the Caspian Sea to the north — are deeply intertwined in the Iranian psyche as symbols of nationhood. Reza Pahlavi, son of the deposed shah of Iran who supports Mr. Trump and encouraged him to abandon diplomacy with the government in Tehran, said on social media, “President Trump’s reported decision to distort history, if true, is an insult to the Iranian people and our great civilization.” What’s the history of the Persian Gulf? The Persian Gulf name has been used throughout history, in maps, documents and diplomacy, from the time of the ancient Persians, whose empire dominated the region, to the Greeks and the British. The push to call it the Arabian Gulf gathered steam during the Pan-Arab nationalist movement of the late 1950s. The United Nations uses the term the Persian Gulf. A 2006 paper by a U.N. working group found unanimity in historical documents on the term, which it said was coined by the Persian king Darioush in the fifth century B.C. Will this affect the Iran-U.S. nuclear talks? Iran and the United States have held three rounds of negotiations, mediated by Oman, on Iran’s advancing nuclear program, and they are scheduled to meet again on Sunday. The United States wants to prevent Iran from weaponizing its nuclear program, and Iran wants to remove sanctions that have hobbled its economy.
