Cacace v Wood: Belfast fighter wins bout with ninth-round TKO
Cacace v Wood: Belfast fighter wins bout with ninth-round TKO
Wood began confidently off the jab as he sought to assert himself, but was snapped back on a couple of occasions from Cacace’s right hands and again towards the end of the opener as there was a sense both men could land something decisive.
Neither could afford to get reckless as there was clear respect between the pair, but Wood walked into a right hand in the second round which made him think twice.
But he did get his best shot off in the dying seconds as he found a home for his own right hand which brought a respectful nod from Cacace.
They landed simultaneously in the third before Cacace appeared to make the first bit of a dent as he got through with one of his trademark uppercuts. After briefly switching to southpaw, he thumped home a left hand which seemed to drive Wood back, but was caught late in the round when missing the target and punished by a counter.
There was an air of tension as the fight proceeded, although Wood enjoyed a good fourth round as he found his range.
It remained on a knife-edge in the fifth with Cacace’s stiff jab rocking Wood’s head back, but the Nottingham man responded well to have his own success.
Cacace grabbed some momentum with a good sixth round as he got through with another uppercut and seemed to be opening up by putting punches together, but was caught in the seventh when switching stances.

UFC 315: Jack Della Maddalena creates Western *********** sporting history with epic title triumph
UFC 315: Jack Della Maddalena creates Western *********** sporting history with epic title triumph
Jack Della Maddalena has created Western *********** sporting history, becoming the state’s first UFC champion.
Della Maddalena has marked himself as one of the best mixed martial artists in the world, claiming the welterweight title in a five-round war against Belal Muhammad at UFC 315 in Montreal on Sunday.
The 28-year-old Perth fighter won via unanimous decision, with all three judges giving him the fight to crown him the first ever UFC champion from WA.
“It’s exactly how I thought it would feel, it feel’s f…ing good,” he said.
The *********** striker executed the perfect gameplan, not getting taken down by the wrestler until the fourth round as he jabbed away Muhammad to join Sydney’s Alexander Volkanovski as a UFC champion.
Della Maddalena ensured the fight was on the feet early and he looked comfortable, switching stances and taking jabs at the champion and backing him to the cage.
The West ***********’s confidence lifted when he stopped Muhammad’s first takedown attempt, which resulted in him pressing even further forward.
Della Maddalena continued the momentum in the second round, again resisting the takedown from Muhammad and busting the nose of the veteran who struggled with the challengers gameplan.
Muhammad tried to up the ante in the third round with his striking but Della Maddalena’s boxing was clearly superior, moving his head to limit the blows while also landing better shots.
It meant Della Maddalena had likely won all three rounds, with Muhammad now desperately needing a finish to retain his title.
And the 38-year-old responded in kind in the fourth round, coming out swinging with strikes rarely seen from Muhammad.
But Della Maddalena absorbed them once again and again kept his feet despite Muhammad’s wrestling pressure.
The fifth round was an all out war, with Della Maddalena cutting Muhammad’s cheek open while the ***********’s eye was nearly closed over after copping some punishment.
In the end though all Della Maddalena had to do was ensure the champion didn’t get a finish, with the Scrappy MMA product claiming an eighth win the octagon and ensuring he would forever be part of UFC history.

Another deadly ****** at one of Fresno’s most dangerous intersections. See the video
Another deadly ****** at one of Fresno’s most dangerous intersections. See the video
One of Fresno’s most dangerous intersections was the scene of another deadly ******.
And it was captured again on video by the operators of the YouTube channel “Friant Roulette,” which shows the continued hazards of driving through the northeast Fresno intersection at Friant Road and Shepherd Avenue.
Early Friday, a man died after driving at a high-rated speed on Shepherd and never making a turn to go north and south on Friant, according to Fresno police.
Instead, the man’s vehicle drove over a curb and hit an embankment before clearing a fence while airborne.
The vehicle burst into flames seconds shortly after the collision.
“We’ve unfortunately seen and heard many different car crashes at that intersection,” said Dan Wells, who runs the Friant Roulette Youtube Channel with cameras secured high from his backyard and pointed at the intersection.
“This one, when we just heard it, we knew it wasn’t good.”
While several other collisions have occurred at the three-way intersection at Friant and Shepherd, Wells noted that Friday’s ****** was slightly different.
Most crashes that occur at the intersection often came be blamed on those going north on Friant and from running a red light, Wells said.
Friday’s ******, though, occurred with the driver heading west on Shepherd and going through a green light.
“It’s probably been about 10 years since we’ve had a car ****** started by someone coming from Shepherd,” Wells said. “That happened before we put our cameras up.
“There’s just been a lot of accidents and crashes that have happened here over the years. This one’s a little different.”
Crashes at Friant/Shepherd intersection
A study by Southern California law firm Jacoby and Meyers Injury Lawyers said 21 crashes occurred at the Friant-Shepherd intersection between 2020 and 2024.
Among them was the April 2023 ****** when a tow truck ran a stop light that had been lit red for more than 10 seconds then T-boning a sedan that was making a left turn from Shepherd to go south on Friant.
A driver of the sedan, a 22-year-old woman who was her way to work, died.
Tow driver driver John Ashcraft, 53, admitted in court last October that he was high on meth.
Other parts of Friant Road located east of Highway 41 have been danger zones, too.
In October 2023, a 50-year-old doctor driving a Tesla at an estimated speed of 124 mph on Friant north of Champlain Drive fatally crashed and killed his passenger wife.
In May 2022, a bicyclist was killed near Aubudon Avenue and Friant.
And in June 2021, a 10-year-old boy was fatally struck near the intersection of Fort Washington Avenue and Friant.
The City of Fresno made a few safety measures in late 2024, most noticeable safety measures implemented to prevent right turns on red lights. In addition, the speed limit along Friant was dropped from 55 to 50 mph.
Wells, however, said the collisions along Friant, especially at Shepherd keep occurring.
He suggested one idea would be to simply prevent right-turning lights from turning green and instead making it a cautionary, flashing yellow.
“One thing we have seen, read and heard is people who’d regularly drive through that intersection (Friant and Shepherd) are much more aware of the dangers there and either refuse to drive out until three to four seconds have passed after a light has turned from red to green; or they’re avoiding driving through that intersection all together,” Wells said.
“But this last car ******, I don’t know what safety measure would’ve stopped that one.”

Jannik Sinner: Italian Open comeback win gives world number one ‘amazing feeling’
Jannik Sinner said it was an “amazing feeling” to be back on court after beating Argentina’s Mariano Navone at the Italian Open in the first match since his doping ban.
The 6-3 6-4 victory was the world number one’s 22nd in a row – a streak interrupted by the three-month suspension he agreed with the World Anti Doping Agency (Wada).
Sinner wrote ‘Che bello’ (How beautiful) on the camera lens at the end of the match, as chants of ‘Ole’ rang around the stadium.
The Italian said the reaction from the home crowd was the best he had ever experienced.
“It has been amazing to go again on court after such a long time, having a great support also in the last days,” Sinner said.
His parents were among 10,500 people who offered him a full throated welcome onto the Campo Centrale, but Sinner showed little emotion as he walked on hand in hand with a child mascot.
“From the first day I came here, it has been amazing. I was waiting for this moment quite a long time,” he added.
“The whole match, even when it seems quite comfortable, it’s a rollercoaster, no?
“Inside we feel that, especially the beginning of the match having, again, the nerves of serving for the first time, trying to move in the best possible way you can.”

Mystery syndrome wiping out magpies across WA and stripping streets of their song
Mystery syndrome wiping out magpies across WA and stripping streets of their song
An unwelcome silence has befallen suburbs and towns across WA as a deadly syndrome threatens to wipe out local magpies and strip streets of their iconic song.
It is estimated hundreds of thousands of birds have fallen victim to magpie paralysis syndrome, also known as ****** and white bird paralysis, with cases spiking drastically this past spring and summer.
In many neighbourhoods the jubilant warbling of magpies, which has long served as a cue for wildlife and humans to rise in the morning and hunker down in the evening, has disappeared completely as entire populations have fallen victim to the mystery syndrome.
“It feels almost apocalyptic,” Dean Huxley, CEO of WA Wildlife, said of the mass deaths.
The sharp uptick in deaths and cases, which now extend as far north as Jurien Bay and south into Augusta, has been met with a groundswell of sadness and concern.
“Recently I’ve heard so many stories of people saying they have had a particular tribe of magpies in their street for years or decades and now they are gone. And that’s not in one area, that’s in the wider Perth area,” Mr Huxley said.
WA Wildlife Hospital, and other wildlife centres, have been overrun with sick birds and Mr Huxley said if cases continue to surge as they did this spring/summer season, he is genuinely concerned magpies may disappear from suburban areas altogether.
“In some suburbs we’ve had reports there are no magpies left at all, so you’ve lost dozens of tribes in one area,” he said.
The mystery syndrome, which tends to be seasonal occurring mostly in warmer, drier months, was first detected in 2017 but there has been a fivefold increase of cases this year.
Despite exhaustive testing and some of the best minds in the country working on it, there’s still no identified cause.
At WA Wildlife’s hospital in Bibra Lake more than 900 magpies have been admitted since August last year, most suffering from the syndrome.
“We started seeing birds with this syndrome about seven years ago and it was pretty infrequent, we’d maybe get one or two a month, which didn’t spark any major concerns,” Mr Huxley said.
“But cases have continued to go up and in the last 12 months they’ve surged.”
The syndrome starts from the feet with magpies experiencing lameness or lack of grip before complete paralysis of the legs.
“At that stage they may still be able to get around using their wings as a crutch but as the syndrome progresses, they can’t even move their wings properly so they can’t fly and can’t get off the ground,” Mr Huxley said.
Grounded magpies then become vulnerable to predators and those that aren’t attacked will eventually be unable to eat or drink and will die of dehydration, starvation or exposure as the paralysis worsens.
“It’s absolutely horrible, the birds suffer and if they don’t receive treatment, they will die,” Mr Huxley said. “We haven’t seen a single case where it resolves on its own.”
Bethany Jackson from Murdoch University’s Veterinary School said she’s had sleepless nights trying to work out what is causing the syndrome.
“I will admit that things run through my head late in the evening, because I feel this is so urgent,” she said.
“The State Government through the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and Perth Zoo were involved in initial testing when the syndrome first appeared, but we couldn’t really find a definitive cause. Then it wasn’t until cases really took off this year that it jumped back up the priority list.”
Initially it was suspected the birds had botulism, but Dr Jackson said that now seems less likely.
“There’s a lot about this event that doesn’t fit with a botulism event,” she said. “So now we’ve gone back to square one to rule out everything.”
Dr Jackson said the team at Murdoch were “throwing everything at it” to try and uncover answers before next season.
However, she acknowledged there was a chance they might never get to the bottom of the problem and points to similar paralysis syndromes in flying fox and lorikeets on the east coast which still have researchers baffled.
“Despite exhaustive testing and some of the best minds in the country working on it, there’s still no identified cause,” she said.
But the Murdoch team are making inroads with a recent discovery that magpie paralysis syndrome also leads to changes in the brains and hearts of afflicted birds.

While the WA Government supported vital initial research to rule out major risk to humans and other species, Dr Jackson said it was harder to attract funding for ongoing research.
“Some of these tests are incredibly expensive,” Dr Jackson said. “We get excellent support amongst collaborators both within WA and even interstate. We work with a lot of laboratories all over Australia. But we’re certainly seeking funding as well.
“But the wildlife care groups are the ones that are really taking the brunt of this while we search answers. They are overrun with cases and mostly rely on donations and volunteers. Any support will really help them stay on top of the cases until we can find a cause and have better information on how to manage them. “
While the impact on magpie populations has been catastrophic, Mr Huxley said the good news was that if caught early enough, birds have a reasonably good prognosis.
“We have about a 60 per cent survival rate,” he said. “We are hoping that in years to come we can improve that, but it’s still a good number for this type of syndrome.”
Treatment is extensive involving tests, x-rays, fluid therapy and extensive feeding regimes.
“Because these animals can’t stand, they can’t eat, so our volunteers and our veterinary team will be tube-feeding them several times a day,” Mr Huxley said.
Camera IconDr Meg Rogers looking over an xray of a magpie. Credit: Justin Benson-Cooper/The West ***********
“And we make little splints to stretch their feet out because they can atrophy and curl up.
“They put up with a lot but magpies are stoic. They are also intelligent birds and I think they know we are trying to help them.”
The recovery ******* can be anywhere from ten days to two weeks, at which point the birds are moved to a pre-release enclosure.
Because magpies are extremely territorial, it is essential they are released to the same spot from where they were collected so they can rejoin their family groups.
“When they are released, they fly up into the tree and start singing and their tribe comes up and starts singing with them, it’s just nice to see that reunion,” Mr Huxley said.
Despite their vital work, WA Wildlife and other wildlife centres receive little to no government funding, besides occasional grants that barely scratch the surface.
Mr Huxley said while the City of Cockburn had been incredibly supportive, the centre mainly relies on donations and volunteers.
“Our running costs are in the tens of thousands every month and like all wildlife organisations that work tirelessly to look after wildlife don’t receive any government funding,” he said.
“State and Federal Governments fund other animal charities, companion animals for example and yet we don’t fund our endemic wildlife, which they leverage for tourism. I think that dynamic needs to change. And that change will come from pressure from the public that says we value our wildlife, we value our magpies and our bird song and we expect some funding for the organisations that are trying to save them.”
Camera IconA magpie receiving an xray. Credit: Justin Benson-Cooper/The West ***********
Mr Huxley also points to the wider ramifications that may arise if magpies disappear from suburban areas, impacting the delicate balance of local ecosystems.
“Magpies they are hugely insectivorous, so they do keep our insect populations down. So, if you are seeing mass deaths and local extermination of a species what might that mean for the health of that environment?” he said.
“And human health is completely reliant on the health of our environments, so if we are seeing a species like magpies suffering and dying because of whatever is going on in that environment, it is only going to be a matter of time before it impacts us, be it through disease, illness or mental health impacts.”
A State Government spokesperson said while magpies are a protected native species in WA, they are not “considered endangered”.
“It is unclear if the reported bird deaths are a result of raised awareness in the WA community and reporting procedures, or an increase in bird deaths,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson added the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions was in “regular contact with licensed wildlife carers including WA Wildlife and will continue to keep them informed when opportunities arise to apply for State funding and grants, to assist organisations with the treatment of these birds”.
Mr Huxley said more needs to be done to prevent magpies from disappearing from suburban areas, a possibility he found “devastating” to consider.
“That’s why our team and all our researchers are fighting so hard,” he said. “If we lost our magpies from suburbia, I think there will be huge community sadness and stress that would probably take a long time to get over.”
How to help
1. If you encounter a magpie on the ground that you suspect it might be sick or injured, and it doesn’t move away when approached, phone the Wildcare helpline on 9474 9055 or WA Wildlife on 9417 7105 for advice. In WA there is no service that will come to rescue sick or injured birds and wildlife centres do not have the resources to do so. However, they can provide information on the safe transportation of injured wildlife to their centres.
2. Clusters of more than five sick or dead birds or wild animals should be reported to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development hotline on 1800 675 888.
3. Donate to a wildlife centre or volunteer yourself. “We have over 500 volunteers and they are the ones that do all the heavy-lifting when it comes to caring for these birds after they’ve received vet treatment,” Mr Huxley said. “Once you volunteer, you’ll love it and you’ll get a lot of positive benefits from yourself.”
4. If you have noticed that magpies have dwindled or disappeared from your area, write to your local Member of Parliament about your concerns.
5. Support healthy magpie populations by putting out fresh water, especially over spring and summer when they are at risk for heat stress and dehydration.
6. Do not feed magpies. Not only is it ******** but it also not in the birds’ best interests as bird ******, cheese and bread do not have the correct nutrients to support optimum health and wellbeing.
7. Plant native trees and bushes to provide ideal habitat and shade and to attract insects. If you are unable to plant trees or bushes, shade sails and other structures also respite from the heat in warm months.
8. Be mindful of what you are using in your garden and avoid toxins that could be harmful to wildlife including weed killer, pesticides and fertilisers.
9. Keep domestic animals away from wildlife.

I swapped my gas truck for a ******** hybrid. The BYD Shark is great to drive, but one thing worries me.
I swapped my gas truck for a ******** hybrid. The BYD Shark is great to drive, but one thing worries me.
Wayne Dopson runs a renovation business in Brisbane, Australia, and bought a BYD Shark hybrid pickup in March.
He said it’s great to drive compared with his old gas truck, but fears it may be obsolete in a few years.
******** EV makers are expanding rapidly in tariff-free Australia, putting Tesla under pressure.
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Wayne Dopson, a project manager in Brisbane, Australia about owning a BYD Shark hybrid pickup truck. It has been edited for length and clarity.
I’ve always been in the property market, flipping houses and doing renovations. I have a small renovation business, working on kitchens, bathrooms, and decks for clients in Brisbane, which I’ve been doing for about 12 years now.
I bought a VW Amarok diesel-powered pickup in 2015. I wanted to upgrade for a while, but nothing came along that took my interest.
Other combustion-engine trucks like the Ford Ranger were all very similar to the Amarok. I would have been getting pretty much the same car with just a ******* screen, so I waited for something a little bit different.
I bought the BYD Shark hybrid pickup in March for 64,000 *********** dollars, around $41,000.
Ford and Toyota are charging ridiculous prices for their pickup trucks, or utes in Australia. You’re looking at up to 80,000 dollars for something that is, to me, inferior to what BYD is charging 60,000 for.
I’ve only done 2,000 kilometers in the Shark so I’m still learning the car, but so far I love driving it.
The technology, the power, and the smoothness — it feels decades ahead of the Amarok.
Luxury and power on the cheap
The level of luxury inside is incredible for the money. I’ve owned Audis and BMWs and it feels just as good, just as solid and well-built as a premium car. It also does 0 to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds, so it drives like a sports car.
Dopson said the BYD Shark’s interior was luxurious.Wayne Dopson
I use it mainly for work as well as leisure, and there are a couple of advantages to using it for work.
It costs me just cents to run it each day. I’ve got 30 solar panels on my roof, so my electricity during the day is free.
I pay eight cents per kilowatt hour from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m., which is enough time to charge the car — it takes between three to four hours to charge.
If I set the car to charge at midnight, it’s done by about 4 a.m., and it generally costs less than two *********** dollars, or $1.03. I’d be using 13 or 14 dollars ($8-9) worth of diesel a day in the VW Amarok, so comparatively it’s very cheap to run.
The other advantage is you’ve got power outlets in the back of the truck that provide about six kilowatts of power, which you can use on-site to power tools.
The Shark’s power sockets can be used for appliances and tools.Wayne Dopson
It’s got a really big tray with a couple of little tricks up its sleeve. You can open your tailgate with a quick press of the key, which is handy if you’re walking up with your hands full.
Range is not a problem
The Shark is what they call an EREV, or extended range electric vehicle. It’s got two electric motors, at the front and rear, and it also has a 1.5-liter petrol turbo engine that acts as a generator.
The petrol engine means range anxiety isn’t really a thing for me.
Generally, I do less than 100 kilometers a day, which will be done in electric mode, but if I do want to go to the beach or further down the coast, I’ve got the petrol engine right there.
That just kicks in and charges the battery and I’m good to go for around 800 kilometers.
The only thing that would worry me down the line is the resale value. I’ve already seen that new vehicles are coming out from Nissan, Ford, and Great Wall.
The technology is advancing like crazy at the moment, so my Shark could be fairly obsolete in five years.
It’s got a six-year warranty, and I’m planning to keep it for the warranty *******. What’s it going to be worth at the end is anyone’s guess.
BYD puts down roots in Australia
I think having more ******** EV brands in Australia is great. We’re getting longer warranty periods and better quality cars.
Dopson uses the Shark for his renovation business in Brisbane.Wayne Dopson
Utes are a very important part of *********** culture. One of the issues the BYD Shark will face is that it doesn’t have the same off-roading credentials as a vehicle with a diff lock — an axle mechanism that you need to crawl over rocks and rough terrain.
It’s fine on the sand and in the mud, but when it comes to really serious off-roading, where you are crawling up huge hills with ruts and boulders, it’s going to struggle.
For me, though, the Shark is great. It’s a pleasure to drive, and it’s nice being able to drive around knowing it’s not costing me and not costing the planet either.

Japan PM Ishiba reiterates call to eliminate all tariffs with US
Japan PM Ishiba reiterates call to eliminate all tariffs with US
By Kevin Buckland
TOKYO (Reuters) -Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba reiterated on Sunday that he will aim for the elimination of all tariffs in trade negotiations with the United States.
Speaking on a Fuji Television morning program, Ishiba said that “discussions have gradually come together,” and that Tokyo’s relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump is “surprisingly good.”
However, Ishiba said that Washington’s agreement with London, announced on Thursday, which lowers prohibitive duties on British car exports while keeping a baseline 10% tariff in place, was “one model” for trade deals, “but we should aim for 0% tariffs.”
Saying that high auto import levies would make cars more expensive for U.S. consumers, Ishiba added, “for the sake of the American economy as well, shouldn’t those tariffs be lowered?”
Trump said on Friday that the U.S. will maintain a baseline 10% tariff on imports even after trade deals are struck, adding there could be exemptions when countries offer significant trade terms.
Currently, Japan faces a 25% levy on economically crucial auto exports to the United States, and a reciprocal 24% tariff on other Japanese goods.
In terms of supporting the domestic economy, Ishiba said that the government needs to think carefully about a mooted reduction in consumption tax.
“If we suddenly lower the consumption tax, what happens to the country’s finances?” he said.
“We have to think if there aren’t other ways that we can help those who are truly in need.”

Roger Cook’s letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese: Look after WA’s interests
Roger Cook’s letter to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese: Look after WA’s interests
Dear Anthony,
Congratulations on leading the *********** Labor Party (ALP) to an emphatic reelection. Over the past three years you and your team have had to contend with significant global challenges. Your record of delivery in the face of these challenges, and your positive plan for the future, were recognised and strongly endorsed by *********** voters at the election on May 3rd.
Our respective governments have worked collaboratively for the benefit of Australia and we have achieved much together. I highly value our close working relationship, and I look forward to continuing to work with you to address the challenges and grasp the many opportunities ahead.
The priority areas on which I invite early collaboration between us are:
Goods and Services Tax
I welcome your commitment to maintain the Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms that ensure Western Australia receives a fair share of the GST.
As you know, WA is the engine room of the national economy and the GST deal enables the WA Government to continue to invest in the infrastructure we need to drive economic activity, boost productivity and continue to contribute in our outsized way.
While some commentators on the east coast continue to agitate for a reduction in WA’s fair share of the GST, Western Australians know that the Albanese Government has our back and we ask that this deal is locked in permanently.
Health
As a result of having the strongest economy in the nation, WA also has the fastest growing population in the nation, and this creates pressure in areas like health and housing.
To support our vision of making WA the healthiest state in the nation, I applaud the ALP s commitment to putting Health front and centre of the election campaign.
Your commitment to co-fund a major update of the Midland Health Campus will contribute greatly to hospital and Emergency Department capacity in Perth and I look forward to delivering this in partnership with you. Further, your commitment to increasing bulk-billed doctor visits, investment in Medicare Urgent Care Clinics and Medicare Mental Health Centres, will go a long way to ensuring Western Australians have better access to the health services they need, when they need them, and alleviate current pressures in public hospitals.
WA remains committed to resolving the 5-year National Health Reform Agreement, in line with the parameters National Cabinet agreed upon in December 2023, as soon as possible and I acknowledge the commitment of Ministers and officials to date. Realising the commitment to achieve a 45% National Commonwealth Contribution Rate by 2035, and the capacity to appropriately fund innovative health care, like virtual care, will allow WA to more sustainably deliver the health care West Australians expect and deserve.
Similarly, the parameters for co-funded Foundational Supports, tied to NHRA negotiations, are yet to be agreed, despite the Commonwealth progressing legislative and operational changes to the NDIS, with children in particular no longer being eligible for the scheme without WA having implemented a Foundational Supports service model or progressing to a full scheme agreement.
Resolving the negotiations in health and disability, and ensuring jurisdictions are better off overall as a result, remain a priority for WA. Furthermore, I look forward to the finalisation of negotiations for our DisabilityCare Australia fund payment and transitioning to the full scheme agreement for the NDIS.
Housing
As I conveyed during the campaign, we welcome your commitment to my government’s vision of ensuring every Western *********** has a home.
In WA, we are pulling every lever we have to address this issue with a record $5.1 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures since 2021. We welcome the ALP s increased support for first homebuyers. It will be important for the Commonwealth to work with states and territories on the design of these initiatives to ensure we are targeting the right cohorts, they complement existing State-based programs and can be delivered effectively in partnership with the WA housing and development industry.
Housing in regional WA is a particular priority for my government, I would encourage the Commonwealth Government to increase direct grants to boost regional housing where we have limited Community Housing providers. While this is important right around the State, I draw your attention to the importance of ensuring our regional centres of Karratha and Port Hedland have the housing they need to support the workforce requirements for the immense economic development opportunities currently in front of them, which include major renewables, gas and minerals processing projects, including green iron.
Environmental Approvals and Legislative Reform
WA supports reforms that will deliver improved environmental outcomes that are better for business. Streamlining environmental approvals will be a key enabler in supporting your Building a Future Made in Australia agenda and to enable the green energy projects required to position Australia as a renewable energy powerhouse.
I welcome your commitment during the campaign to go back to the drawing board on environmental reforms, ensuring that there is extensive consultation with the WA Government and industry stakeholders on any new model for environmental law reform.
Gas is critical to meeting the energy needs of WA and supporting renewables in our clean energy transition, which includes exiting coal ahead of any other *********** state. Gas is also crucial to helping our trading partners to decarbonise, both directly and in helping WA process minerals like lithium, which are critical to the manufacturing of renewables and battery storage.
As you are aware, the Federal Government has previously delayed a decision on environmental approval for the North West Shelf Project Extension. It is important that a decision on this project is made promptly and without any further delay.
Strong and Diversified Economy
I look forward to working with you to ensure WA continues to be the economic engine room of the nation. Your Building a Future Made in Australia agenda is strongly aligned with our Made in WA priorities – together our governments can collaborate to help diversify our economy and make more things here.
Underpinning our future economic growth is our joint commitment to deliver clean, reliable and affordable energy. Decarbonising Western *********** industry will be key to the nation’s ongoing economic prosperity. I look forward to continued Commonwealth cooperation and investment in the infrastructure needed to support this transition, including supporting carbon capture and storage.
WA is well-positioned to support the *********** Government to deliver on its AUKUS responsibilities in line with its commitments under the Defence Cooperation Agreement. Negotiations are underway between WA and Commonwealth Government senior officials, however, these are progressing more slowly than we would like.
As a priority, we need a shared understanding of timing and sequencing of key decision points. This is vital to minimise disruption to adjacent renewables, critical minerals processing and decommissioning industries across the Western Trade Coast, the economy and to achieve our shared objectives of delivering the defence precinct and boosting the defence industry and capability.
Skills and Jobs
Having a skilled workforce will underpin everything we do. I strongly welcome your government’s continued commitment to Fee-Free TAFE. While our governments are doing everything we can to ensure Australians have the opportunity to gain the skills they need, it is clear that WA will continue to face ongoing pressures on our skilled workforce.
WA has the lowest unemployment rate and highest labour force participation rate of every state in the nation. Skilled migration will continue to play an important role in ensuring WA has the workforce it needs. I encourage your government to consult with the WA Government and industry on further opportunities to expand skilled migration into WA.
International education is an important part of the national economy. International students also play an important role in ensuring our tertiary education system is world class and delivering the research that is essential to our nation s future prosperity.
I am concerned about the negative impacts of the Commonwealth Government’s migration reforms on WA’s international education sector and economy. I understand that a number of international education providers in the State, particularly VET and English language providers, will have to scale back operations or cease business as a result.
I urge the Commonwealth Government to consider WA s particular circumstances when developing the 2026 New Overseas Student Commencement as opposed to relying solely on historical data. Despite significant investment to support the international education sector recover from the impacts of COVID-19, WA’s international student enrolment share remains notably lower than its general population share, unlike some other jurisdictions.
Funding for Remote Communities
The former Liberal-National Commonwealth Government vacated its historic and moral obligations to remote Aboriginal communities in 2018. While your government has made important commitments to support remote communities in the Northern Territory, issues impacting remote communities in WA have not been addressed.
WA has already made significant progress on improving the standard of power and water services, however, on housing and municipal services there is more work to be done. Improving outcomes for Aboriginal communities requires a collective effort from all levels of government and is critical if we are to achieve our targets in Closing the Gap. I seek your support for the Commonwealth Government to take an active role in partnering with the WA Government to address challenges in these communities.
Early Childhood Education and Care
I commend your government for establishing a universal early education system that includes expanding services to areas of need and the establishment of the 3 Day Guarantee to replace the Activity Test.
My government has committed $33.9 million to commence a nation-leading rollout of free fulltime kindergarten for children in their year before full time school and the establishment of the Office of Early Childhood. We have also committed $15 million to significantly increase the availability of out-of-school-hours care at WA public schools.
In WA, some of the benefits of the additional hours of subsidised early childhood education provided by the Commonwealth will not be realised as kindergarten is offered in public school settings.
The National Preschool Reform Agreement will provide an opportunity for the Commonwealth to recognise WA s commitment to school-based pre-school and provide a fair funding allocation.
Infrastructure
I would like to acknowledge the ongoing and productive collaboration between our governments to deliver on critical infrastructure priorities, including the continued rollout of our flagship METRONET program of public transport investments and the delivery of major road upgrades across Perth and regional WA. Your commitments to continue supporting the next stage of key infrastructure projects in WA, such as Westport, the return of the Western *********** Freight Rail network to government hands, the expansion of the ferry network and key road upgrades, will help to provide certainty to industry and the community about the future of our transport sector.
My government remains focused on delivering our major infrastructure projects and will continue to advocate strongly for our population share of national infrastructure funding.
Sport and Recreation
The Western *********** government is actively involved in creating and enhancing sporting infrastructure across the State. My government has recently committed over $330 million across sporting and recreation projects, notwithstanding the $217 million to further redevelop Perth’s Burswood Peninsula into a world class sport and entertainment precinct. Federal partnerships remain critical for many of these projects. I would welcome further discussion on how our governments can work together, particularly on the Binar Aboriginal Sporting Hub, Malaga Sports Precinct as well as the Dorrien Gardens redevelopment.
Delivering Election Commitments
I welcome the many election commitments you and team have made that will benefit WA. I also acknowledge the joint commitments the WA Government made with the ALP which we will now work with you to deliver.
• $355 million to upgrade St John of God Midland Public Hospital – the Commonwealth will contribute $200 million to this project.
• $700 million to upgrade the Kwinana Freeway – the Commonwealth will contribute $350 million to this project.
• $450 million to upgrade the Reid Highway-Erindale Road intersection – the Commonwealth will contribute $225 million to this project.
• $60 million to expand the Swan River Ferry network.
• $2.5 million to support the *********** Rail Track Corporation to work with the Western *********** Government to support bring W s freight rail network back into public hands.
There are a number of other priorities and election commitments of interest to the WA Government. My respective Cabinet Ministers will engage with their Commonwealth counterparts to discuss further.
I look forward to continuing to work with you and your Ministers. There is also always an open invitation for your Cabinet to meet again in WA in 2025.
Yours sincerely,
Roger Cook

Head clash forces Holly McNamara out of ALW semi
Head clash forces Holly McNamara out of ALW semi
A-League Women star Holly McNamara has been substituted out of Melbourne City’s semi-final against Central Coast with suspected concussion and is set to miss a potential grand final.
McNamara was substituted after a horror head clash on Sunday and seven-day concussion protocols are expected to draw a line through the luckless Matildas striker if City make the decider against Melbourne Victory.
The league’s brightest star, McNamara was back in City’s starting line-up at Casey Fields after coming off the bench in last week’s away semi-final leg in Gosford, which was a 2-2 draw.
The 22-year-old was showing dangerous form but her match came to an early end in the 10th minute when she went up for a header against Mariners goalkeeper Sarah Langman and the pair heavily clashed heads.
Both hit the deck, with McNamara staying down requiring treatment.
The distraught striker slowly walked off the field and was quickly ruled out of the game, with Shelby McMahon replacing her.
If City qualify, the grand final will take place next Saturday, as they are due to subsequently fly out to China for their Women’s Asian Champions League semi-final.
Given the six-day turnaround, McNamara would be unable to play in the grand final.
McNamara has had an extraordinary season, scoring 15 goals in 18 games after returning from her third career knee reconstruction.
Sunday’s game could also have been her final ALW appearance, as McNamara has attracted attention from overseas.
City’s job was made harder when winger Lourdes Bosch received a straight red card in the 25th minute for needlessly hitting Central Coast’s Brooke Nunn in the face after the Mariners attacker had pushed her.

India’s clash with Pakistan sees use of ******** missiles, French jets, Israeli drones and more
India’s clash with Pakistan sees use of ******** missiles, French jets, Israeli drones and more
BANGKOK (AP) — India’s missile and bomb strikes on targets in Pakistan and Pakistani-controlled Kashmir have spiked tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, with Pakistan’s leader calling the attacks an act of war.
Claims about the initial attack and the aftermath have differed widely, with neither India nor Pakistan releasing many specific details. Making the ongoing conflict even more confusing, the internet has been “flooded with disinformation, false claims, and manipulated photos and videos,” the Soufan Center think tank said.
“This information warfare is compounded by both sides’ commitment to save face,” it said.
With ongoing fighting, it has been impossible to independently verify many of the claims, but some information can be gleaned from official statements and paired with what is known to gain greater insight into the clash:
******** aircraft, Russian defenses and rampant disinformation
Pakistan on Saturday said it launched hypersonic missiles from a JF-17 Thunder jet, an aircraft built by China in collaboration with Pakistan, and destroyed a Russian-built S-400 air defense system in India’s border Punjab state.
India denied the site was hit, saying it would provide evidence later.
Praveen Donthi, a senior analyst with the International Crisis Group, said the two sides are “effectively at war” even though they have not yet called it that, and an “explosion of disinformation stemming from a lack of official confirmation” is causing panic among civilians, particularly among those living in border areas.
“It’s become a remorseless race for military one-upmanship,” he said.
Pakistan also said Saturday it used its ******-II missiles to target an Indian missile storage facility and two airbases, an attack acknowledged by Indian officials who said they targeted Pakistani military bases in retaliation.
It was not clear what damage was caused in either attack, though Pakistan claimed to have intercepted most of the Indian missiles and was, in turn, retaliating for India’s retaliatory strike.
Pakistan says it shot down 5 Indian planes involved in initial attack
Hours after India’s attack early Wednesday, in retaliation for last month’s massacre of tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir, Pakistan’s military spokesperson Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif claimed the Pakistan air force had shot down five Indian attack aircraft: three French-made Rafales, a Russian-made SU30MKI and a Russian-made MiG-29.
Pakistan’s air force suffered no casualties, and that all of its aircraft returned safely to base, he said.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif repeated the claim, saying the Pakistan air force had the opportunity to shoot down 10 Indian planes, but exercised restraint and downed only the five that had fired on Pakistani targets.
He told Parliament that overall 80 Indian planes had been involved in the attack.
India, meantime, has not acknowledged any losses, though debris from three aircraft came down in at least three areas.
Events remain unclear without witness reports or video
India has all three types of jets among its more-than 700 combat capable fighter aircraft, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ Military Balance report.
All three aircraft are fighters with the capability of carrying bombs or missiles for ground attacks.
Pakistan and India have both said their planes did not leave their home airspace, suggesting that if Pakistan’s account is accurate, rather than a dogfight in the skies over Kashmir, Pakistani pilots fired multiple air-to-air missiles over a long distance to take down Indian planes.
Presuming India fired back, even though Pakistan said none of its planes were hit, the aerial skirmish would have been quite the show. But there have been no eyewitness reports or video to emerge on social media.
What is known for sure is that Indian planes were in the air and attacked at least nine targets and debris from three has been found.
It’s also plausible Pakistan used surface to air missiles to hit Indian planes, which the war in Ukraine has shown to be very effective and would not have meant risking any of its own planes.
Pakistan has a wide range of such missiles, primarily ********-made.
Events put ******** tech to the test
Pakistan’s air force includes U.S.-made F-16s, the French Mirage and the new ********-built J-10C, as well as the JF-17.
In addition to American air-to-air missiles, Pakistan also has several ******** products in its arsenal, including the PL-12 and PL-15, both of which can be used to fire at targets beyond visual range.
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar told lawmakers it was the J-10C that shot down the Indian aircraft, raising the likelihood that ********-built missiles were also employed.
“It’s interesting that Pakistan is saying it is using ******** jets that it has imported from China to shoot down Indian aircraft,” said Lisa Curtis, director of the Indo-Pacific security program at the Center for a New American Security, a Washington think tank.
In 2019, during the rivals’ previous military confrontation, “it was a Pakistani F-16 provided by the United States that was used to shoot down an Indian aircraft,” Curtis said in a conference call. “It’s interesting to see that Pakistan is relying more on its ******** equipment than it did six years ago.”
The news convinced traders with shares in AVIC Chengdu Aircraft, which builds both the J-10C and J-17, to post large gains Wednesday and Thursday on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.
The stock of Dassault Aviation, the maker of the Rafale jet, which is among those Pakistan claims to have shot down, dropped sharply on Wednesday on the Paris Stock Exchange, though it had recovered by close on Thursday.
Pieces of information issued by each country
India hasn’t talked about what assets were involved in the attacks. The Indian Defense Ministry said the strikes targeted at least nine sites “where terrorist attacks against India have been planned.”
India showed video of eight of the strikes at a briefing on Wednesday, four in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and four in Pakistan.
Pakistan has said 31 civilians were killed, including women and children, in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and the country’s Punjab province, and that buildings hit included two mosques.
Both sides have talked about missile strikes, but it was clear from the video that bombs also were dropped on some targets, possibly from drones. In addition to claiming the five Indian aircraft shot down, Pakistan also said it downed an unspecified number of drones on Wednesday.
Indian officials said the strikes were precision attacks, and from the videos shown it appeared specific areas of installations were targeted with individual missiles or bombs, rather than widespread areas.

Mam put on report in Souths-Logan comeback
Mam put on report in Souths-Logan comeback
There was high drama in Ezra Mam’s rugby league return for Souths-Logan, with the star Brisbane playmaker put on report.
Mam, in his first tackle of the match, collected Western Clydesdales prop Lachlan Mears-Crabbe high at Davies Park.
He faces a nervous wait from the QRL match review committee as the Broncos sweat on his availability for Sunday’s clash with St George Illawarra.
The 22-year-old scored a first-half try with a typically scything run.
Mam was a bit rusty, as was to be expected. His first cutout pass went high and through the hands of left winger Floyd Aubrey. Mam made one strong dart, but had the ball stripped before settling into his work with class and panache.
He was playing his first game back after a nine-week suspension by the NRL after he pleaded guilty to driving unlicensed and with drugs in his system when he had a head-on collision on October 18 last year.
Mam was playing on an oval and for a team very familiar to him. In 2021 he was Queensland Cup rookie of the year while playing for the Magpies when he scored two hat-tricks of tries, including one at Davies Park.
Sunday’s clash was his 19th Cup match for the club.
Mam’s return has come at just the right time for the Broncos in more ways than one. They are in the midst of a slump, with one win from their past five games.
Regular five-eighth Ben Hunt suffered a hamstring injury in the 22-14 loss to South Sydney on Friday night and is set to miss four to six weeks.
Half Jock Madden, a back-up option, is set for surgery on a ruptured pec sustained in the Queensland Cup and is facing three months on the sidelines.
In a twist of fate, Mam played alongside former Broncos playmaker Anthony Milford.
Milford was a late withdrawal four years ago when Mam was called into the Magpies side to play CQ Capras for his Cup debut in Rockhampton, when he scored three tries and announced himself as a player of rare talent.
