North Korean leader Kim Jong Un says participation in Russia-Ukraine war justified -KCNA North Korean leader Kim Jong Un says participation in Russia-Ukraine war justified -KCNA SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said North Korea’s involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war was justified, calling it an exercise of sovereign rights in defence of a “brother nation,” state media KCNA reported on Saturday. “Our participation in the conflict was just, and it falls within the sovereign rights of our Republic,” Kim said, according to KCNA. “I consider all the brave soldiers who participated in the Kursk operation to be heroes and the highest representatives of the nation’s honour,” he added. Kim also said Pyongyang would not hesitate to authorise the use of military force if the United States persists in what he called military provocations against Russia. North Korea did not officially confirm until late April that it had sent more than 10,000 troops and weapons to Russia as the countries’ military ties grew dramatically under a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty signed by Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin last year. 5. Demi Vollering defends women’s Vuelta crown in Spain Demi Vollering defends women’s Vuelta crown in Spain Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering has been crowned La Vuelta Femenina champion for a second successive year as the FDJ-Suez rider claimed victory in style with a powerful display in the final stage. In a foggy and rain-soaked climb to Alto de Cotobello on Saturday, Vollering surged away from the chasing pack in the final kilometre and crossed the finish line ahead of Swiss Marlen Reusser and fellow Dutchwoman Anna van der Breggen. After seven stages, Vollering ended the competition one minute and one second ahead of Reusser in the overall standings, with van der Breggen a further 15 seconds behind in third place. “It’s really cool to win this race for the second time in a row. I also wanted this stage victory in Cotobello,” Vollering said. “I decided to wait for as long as possible to launch my attack. It was hard to wait, but I’m happy that I won the way I did. I’m always looking forward to proving my talent, and I’m already thinking of the next races.” Vollering, who also won the Tour de France Femmes title in 2023, moved from SD Worx to FDJ-Suez this year. “I’m really proud of what we achieved here with the team. It was nice to see us succeed like we did,” the 28-year-old said. “It’s a bit scary to come into a Grand Tour with a new team, because you don’t know how it will go. In this stage race, we found each other well on the bike and proved we can work really well together.” Source link #Demi #Vollering #defends #womens #Vuelta #crown #Spain Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  6. If I Could Only Buy and Hold a Single Stock, This Would Be It If I Could Only Buy and Hold a Single Stock, This Would Be It There’s no need to pick just one company to invest in when you can track the growth of many. Vanguard’s S&P 500 ETF lets you benefit from the overall market’s performance. The fund is inexpensive to own, easy to buy and sell, and benefits from the S&P 500’s impressive track record. 10 stocks we like better than Vanguard S&P 500 ETF › There are plenty of good places to invest your money right now, but tariffs and economic uncertainty are making it much harder to feel confident about buying stocks in some sectors. I tend to be cautious about where I put my money, but one investment that almost always looks like a good place to invest is the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO). Here are five reasons it would be my only choice if I had to pick just one stock — or in this case, an exchange-traded fund — for my retirement portfolio. Image source: Getty Images. One of the best things about the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF is that the money you invest in it will be spread across 500 of the largest U.S. companies, which make up the S&P 500. Because the exchange-traded fund tracks the S&P 500 index, you won’t have to worry about picking stocks across a variety of sectors — you can enjoy a base level of diversification as soon as you own the fund. With the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF, there’s less of a need to know which sector is booming or which company is inventing the next big thing. This is ultimately a bet on the long-term rise of the broad market. While the common financial disclaimer, “Past performance is not a guarantee of future results,” applies to this fund just like it applies to every other stock you might own, the S&P 500 does boast a long history of gains. The index has delivered an average annual rate of return of 10.1% (not accounting for inflation) since 1957. This Vanguard ETF won’t return that exact amount annually — there will up years and down years. But given enough time, the S&P 500 has always rebounded from its lows and made significant gains. All funds charge fees, usually quantified as an expense ratio, and the average fee for index equity ETFs is 0.14%. That’s already quite low, but Vanguard’s fund is a standout for its ultra-low annual fee of just 0.03%. That means that for every $10,000 you have in the fund, you’ll pay just $3 annually. This is especially important as your portfolio grows over time. With the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF, you’ll keep more of the gains you make from the market because of the fund’s industry-low expense ratio. Story Continues While Vanguard’s ETF is a fund that tracks the S&P 500, it’s not any more difficult to buy and sell than any other stock. This means that if you need to sell some shares of the fund quickly, exit your position, or buy new shares, you can do it the same way you would with any stock through your preferred brokerage. And because the fund is one of the most popular options out there — it’s the largest Vanguard ETF — it’s highly liquid for when you’re ready to sell. The S&P 500 index is composed of some of the largest, most stable, and profitable companies, which means you’ll be invested in quality businesses. Of course, that doesn’t mean the fund is immune to volatility — it’s been on a wild ride over the past few months in response to tariffs — but it does mean that your money is invested in a fund that tracks the growth of many industry-leading companies. It’s worth mentioning that given the considerable uncertainty in the market and economy right now, even stable, profitable companies can underperform in this environment. That’s why it’s important for investors to remember that if you buy the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF, you should plan to hold onto it for years, just like any other stock, in order to reap the full rewards. Before you buy stock in Vanguard S&P 500 ETF, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Vanguard S&P 500 ETF wasn’t one of them. 7. Gigabyte incorporates 64MB BIOS chip on X870 motherboard to integrate the WiFi driver Gigabyte incorporates 64MB BIOS chip on X870 motherboard to integrate the WiFi driver Gigabyte just released the X870 Aorus Stealth ICE motherboard, which features a ******* BIOS than most other competing hardware. According to Uniko’s Hardware, this is the first AM5 motherboard to feature a 64MB chip, four times larger than the 16MB BIOS chip that most AM4 motherboards used when it was new. However, the larger capacity, which Gigabyte calls Driver BIOS, seems to be mainly used to store the Wi-Fi driver, as the motherboard’s spec sheet says that the BIOS is still 256 Mbit flash, which translates to 32MB. Still, having the Wi-Fi driver already pre-installed on the motherboard makes setting up a new computer more convenient, especially as Microsoft now requires you to create an online Microsoft Account (or log into your existing one) when setting up Windows 11 for the first time. A workaround still lets you start your new Windows PC offline, but this will likely be unfamiliar to most users. The company did not just stop at having the Wi-Fi driver already pre-installed on the motherboard. It also added other conveniences, like the Wi-Fi EZ-Plug, which integrates the antennas into one adapter for an easier and cleaner install, various EZ-Latch designs, making it easy to add and remove PCIe components and M.2 drives and their corresponding heatsink, as well as the EZ Debug Zone, which helps you troubleshoot your motherboard if you run into any error. It also introduced pressurized thermal pads for M.2 SSDs, reducing operating temperatures by up to 12 degrees Celsius. another crazy idea on the latest aorus stealth ice mobo is that gigabyte seems to upgrades the bios chip ic from 32MB to 64MB for wifi driver preloading.this makes sure every user can use the wifi out of the box. when Microsoft asks for ms account during windows installation,… pic.twitter.com/igXkWk1PGRMay 9, 2025 These innovations help make Gigabyte’s high-end motherboards stand out from the competition. Hopefully, they will eventually trickle down to mid-range and entry-level motherboards, especially the Driver BIOS feature. With Computex 2025 just around the corner, we’re excited to see if we spot any of these on the motherboards that Gigabyte will show off at the expo. Maybe this could even start a trend where these components already come with a Wi-Fi driver out of the box to make both hardware and software installation and initial setup easier. 9. Intel stealthily pulls the plug on Deep Link less than 5 years after launch Intel stealthily pulls the plug on Deep Link less than 5 years after launch Intel has discontinued support for its Deep Link suite of technologies, as confirmed by a representative on GitHub, via X user Haze. After Intel quietly stopped promoting the feature in newer products such as Battlemage, it has now confirmed that active development for Deep Link has ceased. While you still might be able to use Deep Link, Intel has clarified that there will be no future updates or official support from their customer service channels. Deep Link was introduced in late 2020. It allows you to harness the combined power of your Intel CPU and Arc GPU to improve streaming, AI acceleration, and overall efficiency. To utilize Deep Link, you needed an Intel 11th, 12th, or 13th Generation CPU and a dedicated Arc Alchemist GPU. The suite offered four key utilities: Dynamic Power Share, Stream Assist, Hyper Encode, and Hyper Compute. Dynamic Power Share optimizes performance and power by intelligently shifting power resources between the CPU and GPU. Stream Assist improved streaming by offloading the task from the dedicated GPU to the integrated GPU. Hyper Encode accelerated video encoding using multiple Intel processors. Lastly, Hyper Compute leveraged your Intel CPU and GPU to accelerate AI workloads in OpenVINO. “Deep Link is no longer actively maintained and will not be receiving future updates, meaning that there will be no changes to the features regardless of their current functionality status.” Intel representative at GitHub These features boosted performance in apps like OBS, DaVinci Resolve, and Handbrake. The user who originated the thread at GitHub could not get Stream Assist up and running with OBS using the latest Arc B580 paired with the Core Ultra 7 265K. Following a month-long wait, a representative relayed that Intel had discontinued software development. It turns out that even Alchemist users had a hard time getting these features working in Handbrake and OBS. It’s possible that Intel considered Deep Link a niche feature and deemed the ongoing effort and investment not worthwhile. Besides, most of these features require per-vendor validation. Development was likely dropped a while back, as Meteor Lake, an architecture that dates back to late 2023, is alson’t among the supported CPUs. 10. Bangladesh outlaws ousted PM’s Awami League party Bangladesh outlaws ousted PM’s Awami League party Bangladesh’s interim administration has announced a sweeping ban on all activities of the country’s oldest political party, the Awami League, following mass protests in Dhaka demanding the party be outlawed. “All activities of the Awami League, including in cyberspace, have been banned under the Anti-Terrorism Act until the prosecution of the party and its leaders is completed by the International Crimes Tribunal,” Asif Nazrul, law affairs adviser to the interim government, told reporters on Saturday. The decision was taken during an emergency meeting of the council of advisers, headed by interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, Nazrul added. “This decision is intended to safeguard national security and sovereignty, protect the leaders and activists of the July Movement and ensure the safety of plaintiffs and witnesses involved in the tribunal,” he said. The Awami League, which led Bangladesh’s 1971 independence war against Pakistan under Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been a dominant force in the country’s politics for decades. Sheikh Hasina, Mujib’s daughter and the party’s president since 1981, was ousted as prime minister last year after her administration was accused of violently suppressing a mass uprising. She is in exile in India and faces multiple criminal charges. The protesters, many of whom played leading roles in the uprising, have long called for the party to be banned and prosecuted as an entity accused of political violence. Saturday’s meeting also approved amendments to the International Crimes Tribunal Act, enabling the tribunal to try and punish any political party, its affiliates or support groups. Crowds in Dhaka welcomed the decision, saying it fulfilled a longstanding demand to hold the Awami League accountable for its alleged role in political violence, enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings during Hasina’s tenure. 11. Trump is bringing white South Africans to the US as refugees, but what persecution are they facing? Trump is bringing white South Africans to the US as refugees, but what persecution are they facing? CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — The Trump administration is bringing a small number of white South Africans to the United States as refugees next week in what it says is the start of a larger relocation effort for a ********* group who are being persecuted by their ******-led government because of their race. The South Africans’ applications are being fast-tracked by the U.S. after President Donald Trump announced the relocation program in February. The Trump administration has taken an anti-migrant stance, suspending refugee programs and halting arrivals from other parts of the world, including Iraq, Afghanistan and most countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Refugee groups have questioned why some white South Africans are being prioritized. South Africa says there’s no persecution The South African government said the U.S. allegations that the white ********* Afrikaners in question are being persecuted are “completely false,” the result of misinformation and an inaccurate view of its country. It cited the fact that Afrikaners are among the richest and most successful people in the country, and said they are amongst “the most economically privileged.” Afrikaners are the descendants of mainly Dutch and French colonial settlers who first came to South Africa in the 17th century. There are around 2.7 million Afrikaners among South Africa’s population of 62 million, which is more than 80% ******. Many in South Africa are puzzled by claims that Afrikaners are persecuted and meet the requirements to be refugees. Afrikaners are part of South Africa’s everyday multi-racial life: many are successful business leaders and some serve in government as Cabinet ministers and deputy ministers. Their language is widely spoken — including by non-Afrikaners — and is recognized as an official language, and churches and other institutions reflecting Afrikaner culture hold prominence in almost every city and town. So what persecution is the U.S. alleging? Farm attacks Trump and his South African-born adviser Elon Musk have accused the South African government of having racist anti-white laws and policies, but the claims of persecution center on a relatively small number of violent farm attacks and robberies on white people in rural communities. The U.S. alleges those attacks are racially motivated and the South African government is “fueling” them by allowing anti-white rhetoric from some political parties not in government and not doing enough to protect rural Afrikaner communities. The government strongly denies that and has condemned the farm attacks, but says their cause is being deliberately mischaracterized. Violent attacks on farm owners in South Africa have been a problem for years but represent a small percentage of the country’s extremely high violent crime rates, which affect all races. The government says there is no targeting of white people in South Africa and no persecution, and farm attacks are part of its struggles with violent crime. An Afrikaner group called AfriForum records farm attacks and said there were 49 farm homicides in South Africa in 2023. Those are set against a total of more than 20,000 homicides in South Africa a year. Experts say rural communities are susceptible to crime because of their remoteness and less police presence, but ****** farm owners and workers are also killed in violent robberies. Still, many rural white communities have long expressed fear at the threat of violence and feel authorities are not doing enough to protect them. Those claims appear to be part of the requirements to claim refugee status in the U.S., although no details of the application process have been announced. Affirmative action and ‘reverse racism’ The Trump administration has also criticized South Africa’s affirmative action policies as racist against whites and has falsely claimed white South Africans are having their land taken away by the government under a new expropriation law that promotes “racially discriminatory property confiscation.” No land has been expropriated, but Afrikaners who make up many rural communities have raised fears that their land might be targeted. South Africa does have laws designed to advance employment opportunities for *******, and many white South Africans and white-led political parties have also criticized them and called them racist and counter-productive. Some Afrikaner groups say the employment, land and other laws are designed to limit their opportunities in South Africa. Afrikaners were at the heart of South Africa’s previous apartheid system of white ********* rule and there is a sentiment among some that they and their culture are being targeted in a kind of reverse racism by the ******-led government as punishment for that. The government denies that. Not the only whites in South Africa Afrikaners make up just some of South Africa’s approximately 4.5 million white people, which also include those who have British and other heritage. But the Trump administration’s refugee program only offers relocation to Afrikaners, who are largely seen as holding conservative and Christian values that might align with the politics of the Trump administration. It’s not clear how many Afrikaners have applied for or been granted refugee status, but a U.S.-based South African business group has said it had a list of tens of thousands who had expressed interest. U.S. officials and a document obtained by The Associated Press said a first group of more than two dozen Afrikaners from around four families will arrive Monday at Dulles International Airport outside Washington. ___ Associated Press writer Michelle Gumede in Johannesburg contributed to this report. ___ More news on South Africa: Source link #Trump #bringing #white #South #Africans #refugees #persecution #facing Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  13. Swiatek woes persist as Collins ends Rome title defence Swiatek woes persist as Collins ends Rome title defence Holder Iga Swiatek has crashed out of the Italian Open to American Danielle Collins after a 6-1 7-5 third-round loss that will cost the struggling Pole the world No.2 spot as the defence of her French Open title looms. Swiatek held a commanding 7-1 head-to-head record against Collins before Saturday’s contest and yet another early defeat does not bode well for the 23-year-old, who has not won a tournament since her fourth triumph at Roland Garros last year. Swiatek has now lost nine matches this year – as many as in all of 2024 – while she has not reached a clay-court final ahead of her bid to retain the French Open title later this month. “It hasn’t been easy,” she told reporters. “For sure, I’m doing something wrong. So I need to just regroup and change some stuff. I had some advice from the team, I’ll just try to do this. “I think I just wasn’t there, present, to fight and to compete (against Collins). I focused on mistakes. It’s my mistake and I’m not doing things right. So the focus is on the wrong things from my side and I’ll try to change that. “I’m not able to play my game. I’ll just try to change my mindset a little bit.” For Collins, though, it was a huge breakthrough. “I played against Iga so many times … When you play that many close matches and get this close and also play some of your best tennis and lose, I think you learn a lot,” she said. “I feel like I applied that today.” Five-times grand slam champion Swiatek went 5-0 down in the opening set before getting on the board to avoid a bagel. Collins was lethal from the baseline, mixing it up with forehand and backhand service return winners as she picked apart Swiatek’s serve in an opening set that was one-way traffic. The second was level at 4-4 as Swiatek showed flashes of brilliance, but 31-year-old 2022 *********** Open runner-up Collins showed no mercy, sealing victory in one hour and 44 minutes when a return went wide. Collins fired 32 winners and converted six of eight break points while Swiatek, who had won the tournament three times in the last four years, made 22 unforced errors. 14. Event center in Fresno closed due to unsanitary conditions for 2nd time in 4 months Event center in Fresno closed due to unsanitary conditions for 2nd time in 4 months Reality Check is a Fresno Bee series holding those in power to account and shining a light on their decisions. Have a tip? Email *****@*****.tld. A Fresno event center was closed for more than two weeks following an inspection by the Fresno County Department of Public Health — and not for the first time. North Point Event Center on West Avenue near Ashlan Avenue, was cited for multiple violations during an April 7 inspection and ultimately ordered closed for “inadequate wastewater drainage and unsanitary conditions.” The violations were spelled out in a nine-page inspection report filed by the the county’s Environment Health Division. According to the report, inspectors found multiple sinks that were clogged and overflowing. Others had leaks in the plumbing lines. The carpet was wet around at least one of the sinks. Most of the floor sinks had food debris in them, according to the report. Inspectors also noted food being stored in open containers in various rooms around the facility, and on the floor in the walk-in freezer. A car battery was also found near food equipment. This wasn’t the first time inspectors found violations at the facility. In January, the facility was closed after inspectors found several rodents (both alive and dead). One mouse was found dead inside a container of bulk coriander. While no vermin were observed during the latest inspection, droppings were found at multiple locations. The event center was allowed to reopen April 23, though a portion of the facility, known as West Bar Regency, remains closed. Other restaurant closures in Fresno for April 2025 Other closures reported in monthly data issued by the health department were: A food truck, Taqueria Emmanuel # 2, which was pulled out of operation following an inspection April 10. The truck was cited (and ordered closed) for several violations including a lack of potable water (both hot and cold needed for sanitation), soap at hand wash sink and adequate refrigeration equipment. The inspector also found “food debris and grease build up” and cockroaches. It remains closed, according to the report, and must correct the violations before it can reopen. Thai Phuket, on First Street just north of McKinley Avenue, was closed April 29 due to a lack of hot water needed to safely wash pots, pans, dishes and glasses. The hot water was recorded at 64 degrees. It needed to be at least 100 for employees to watch their hands. Hot water is one of the most common violations and causes for closure during inspections and is often quickly corrected. The restaurant reopened later that day. In March, there were seven closures ordered by the health department, which monitors (and inspects) restaurants, snack bars, grocery stores, commissaries, delicatessens and food vendors across the county and makes its reports available to the public online. In all, 21 restaurants, markets and other food businesses have failed health inspections so far in 2025. What inspectors look for The Fresno County Department of Public Health has about two dozen environmental health specialists who monitor almost 5,000 restaurants, snack bars, grocery stores, commissaries, delicatessens and food vendors across the county and make unannounced visits several times a year. Restaurants also are inspected following fires, or in response to complaints or other concerns from the public, including when people report what they believe are health or sanitation issues at restaurants. When inspectors visit a restaurant or other food service business, there is a lengthy and detailed list of more than 50 things that draw their scrutiny. They include: Whether the manager and all employees have the required food safety or food-handling certificates. Hygiene of individual employees. Ways to keep cold food at or below 41 degrees and hot food above 135 degrees. Use of proper sterilization for counters, tables, utensils and cookware. Proper drainage of sinks and floor drains. Restrooms stocked with supplies. Whether the business has the proper license or permit. In most instances, if an inspector finds a problem, it’s something that can be fixed on the spot. This can include having enough bleach or sanitizer in the water used to wipe down food-preparation areas, replenishing soap, paper towels and toilet paper in the restrooms, or reminding employees to wash their hands and wear gloves and hairnets. Insect or vermin infestations are violations that can result in immediate closure of restaurants or food businesses when they are observed by health inspectors. Among other serious concerns are refrigerators that don’t keep food cold enough or steam tables that don’t keep food hot enough to inhibit bacterial growth, or clogged sinks or drains that cause contaminated water to back up into kitchens. Having privatized the police force, OCP deliberately sabotages the department during the middle of a drug epidemic orchestrated by criminal mastermind Cain (Tom *******). At the same time, RoboCop (Peter Weller) is still looking to uphold the public trust and protect the innocent, while other people at OCP plot to replace him and move up the corporate ladder. While it’s a suitable follow-up, it’s also noticeably different in tone, lacking the original’s not-so-subtle commentary aimed at a decade of greed and decadence. However, it more than makes up for it with its higher-stakes storyline, slick action sequences, and cheesy B-movie charm. Anyone looking to revisit Old Detroit can check out the rest of the franchise on Blu-ray. In case the steelbook cover doesn’t interest you, you can get RoboCop 2 on 4K or standard Blu-ray, and the original film is also available in these formats. RoboCop 3 has only been released on standard Blu-ray so far–it’s not like a 4K cut can improve that infamously bad version of the film–and the 2014 remake is also available to purchase in 1080p and 4K formats. While the modern-day interpretation isn’t anywhere as good as the original, it’s also not nearly as bad as you’d think, and it still makes for a fun diversion on a cold night. You can also pick up the 1994 RoboCop TV series on Blu-ray, but for completionists, it looks like there’ll still be a gap in your collection as the two animated series–RoboCop: The Animated Series and RoboCop: Alpha Commando–and the live-action mini-series RoboCop: Prime Directives haven’t gotten Blu-ray releases yet. Meanwhile, for anyone who has ever wanted to step into the robotic chassis and dole out some justice yourself, you can grab the excellent RoboCop: Rogue City on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. 17. Twenty killed in Sudan after RSF drone hits jail: govt Twenty killed in Sudan after RSF drone hits jail: govt A suspected drone strike launched by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has hit a prison in the southern region of Kordofan and killed at least 20 inmates, authorities say. Fifty other detainees were wounded in the attack on the main prison in Obeid, the capital city of North Kordofan, Information Minister Khalid Aleiser said in a statement. Aleiser, who is also the spokesman of the military-allied government, accused the Rapid Support Forces for the attack, which came as the militia escalates drone strikes on the military-held areas across the country. Sudan plunged into civil war on April 15, 2023 when simmering tensions between the military and the RSF exploded into open warfare in the capital Khartoum and other parts of the country. Obeid is 363km south of Khartoum. Attacks on civilian infrastructure in #Sudan pose great risks to already-limited access to health care, by disrupting major gateways, causing electricity blackouts and fuel shortages. The best medicine is peace. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (@DrTedros) May 9, 2025 There was no immediate comment from the RSF which earlier this month launched multi-day drone attack on Port Sudan, the Red Sea city serving as an interim seat for the Sudanese government. The strikes hit the city’s airports, maritime port and other facilities including fuel storages. The military earlier struck Nyala airport in South Darfur, where the RSF receives foreign military assistance including drones. Local media say dozens of RSF officers were killed in last week’s strike. In the western region of Darfur, an artillery attack by the RSF on Friday on a camp for displaced people killed at least 14, according to the Emergency Room, an activist group tracking the war. The dead included two parents, their eight children and the children’s grandmother, the group said. The RSF has launched nearly daily attacks on the camp and the nearby city of el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur, which the paramilitaries have attempted to seize for more than a year. Last month the RSF rampaged through Sudan’s largest camp for displaced, Zamzam, killing more than 400 people. The militia took control of the camp, pushing its population to flee. The war has killed at least 24,000 people although the number is likely far higher. It has driven about 13 million people from their homes, including four million who crossed into neighbouring countries. Parts of the country have been pushed into famine. 19. River clean-up sees 6,000 tyres pulled from water River clean-up sees 6,000 tyres pulled from water Thousands of tyres have been pulled from a river in a major clean-up to help the environment and wildlife. Over the past five days 6,000 tyres, which could have been there for decades, were removed by six excavators from the River Ogmore, in Bridgend. Organisers have described it as Wales’ largest community river clean, with hundreds of volunteers taking part. Two years ago, 2,000 tyres were removed from the bed of the river, along with up to 100 trolleys, and a fridge. Organisers said that was only the start, adding they are still only halfway through and plan further clean-up operations to remove all the tyres. Alun Phillips runs environmental charity, A Peace for Nature, and organised the clean-up. “What we did a couple of years ago was just scratching the surface really. It was a bit of a pilot to see if we need to do it again and as soon as we did it everyone was asking how are we going to get the rest of the tyres out.” Mr Phillips said this years clean-up also removed 10 tonnes of rubbish as well as the 6,000 tyres. “I believe there is a total of 13,000 tyres to remove from the river. We’ve now removed 8,000 over two river cleans.” Six excavators were used to remove thousands of tyres from the river bed. [BBC] Hundreds of volunteers took part including children from local schools and colleges. Mr Phillips added: “With over 90 organisations taking part, this has been Wales’ largest river clean to date and we aim to continue to improve the environment in Wales with further community projects. “We have a community of companies helping here and we have community of volunteers including schools and colleges, there’s been lots and lots of support.” Hundreds of volunteers have taken part in the river clean [BBC] Volunteers from Keep Wales Tidy were involved in this year’s clean-up as well as the one in August 2023 – when they also recovered three to four tonnes of scrap, 100 bags of litter, about 100 shopping trolleys, a fridge and traffic cones. Owen Derbyshire, Keep Wales Tidy’s chief executive officer, said: “It’s a huge challenge but we know the health of our rivers is massively important not just at a community level but also at a national level. “Times are tough at the moment, there isn’t as much money in public finances but this is why it’s more important than ever that we take individual responsibility.” He added that shopping trolleys were not ending up in the river by accident and “we need to call it out”. “We need to do all we can as a nation to reduce the amount of waste and that type of behaviour for the long term,” he said. Susan and Gerwyn Chillcot from Bridgend are volunteering at the clean-up [BBC] Gerwyn Chillcot from Bridgend is volunteering at the clean-up and said the mess was “disgusting”. “To think all this mess that has been dumped over the years is disgusting, but it’s good it’s being cleaned up now for the environment. “This is toxic at the end of the day and all the chemicals from the tyres are going into the water.” Sandra Ricardo from Cardiff Rivers group said it was unclear how the tyres ended up in the river. Ms Ricardo said one theory is the tyres were used to “shore up” the edging of the river bank decades ago but also fears many could have been fly-tipped over the years. “Why do people do this? You can take your rubbish to the council tip. “Fly-tipping is a big issue especially in Cardiff. You see mattresses dumped and fridge freezers, it’s a real problem.” Andrew Stride, is from Ogmore Angling Association and says the “tyres are toxic rubbish in the river” [BBC] Environmental campaigners said the toxic rubbish could wipe out the wildlife on the river. Andrew Stride, from Ogmore Angling Association, said he had seen fish levels decrease in the river over the years, “It has a huge impact on the fish population, these tyres are releasing chemicals that will affect the invertebrates and if they’re killed off that will affect the fish and especially the salmon and sewin which come up this river. “This toxic waste will just make it even worse.” Angharad Brown, president of the Merthyr Mawr Women’s Institute, co-ordinated volunteers at the clean-up operation. “It’s important for us to be involved in such a worthwhile community project, which fits in with our own campaign for cleaner rivers and waterways in Wales,” she said. 22. Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy Is As Exciting For The Design Team As It Is For The Players Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy Is As Exciting For The Design Team As It Is For The Players To say that the team behind Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming Final Fantasy collaboration set is excited to launch would be an understatement. “As we drove up to the convention center, there’s this giant hotel-sized screen that says ‘Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy on it,” principal designer and set design lead Gavin Verhey said during a press preview event for the upcoming set. “We all just looked at each other and said, ‘This is it, this is what we’ve been waiting for. It’s finally happening.'” Moments like this are what Verhey, executive producer Zakeel Gordon, principal game designer Dillon Deveney, and senior game designer Daniel Holt have dreamed of throughout the four-year history of the set’s development. As the team reminisces about their time working on the expansion, both in Square Enix’s offices in Japan and the Wizards of the Coast headquarters in Renton, Washington, our Zoom call lights up with smiles and laughter at the simple mention of cards like Summon: Bahamut, names like Yoshitaka Amano, and countless other references. For these four people, the release of Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy is a culmination of hard work, a celebration of both Magic and Final Fantasy, and ultimately, a declaration of victory. GameSpot sat down with the panel for a lengthy chat about Final Fantasy’s foray into Magic: The Gathering, which begins on June 13. Absolute Virtue The design process “I was designing cards at 2 AM” is a common phrase out of Verhey’s mouth. In this particular case, he’s talking about Absolute Virtue, the powerful boss from Final Fantasy XI, and the card that appeared during the panel. Gordon, Deveney, and Holt knowingly nod along, anticipating where the story is going. “I was trying to design Absolute Virtue, and I could not figure out what to do,” Verhey says, “and I fell asleep at my desk–like an adult. Suddenly, I woke up and thought, ‘Ah! Protection from everything! It literally popped in my head as I was waking up from sleeping. I typed it into the file and thought, ‘Well, that’s probably not going to stick,’ but then I showed it to everyone, and they just loved it. They thought it was amazing.” That’s not to say every conversation went so swimmingly; Deveney used the word “spirited” to describe some of the conversations between himself and Holt. “We only have so many design slots in the [pre-constructed Commander] deck for new cards,” Deveney describes. “Who gets that? Who makes the cut?” Deveney specifically recalls a discussion around the Final Fantasy XIV pre-constructed deck, which in itself was a Herculean task to create. “Truth be told, this is a game that’s been running for 10-plus years, with 14 years of content; we could probably make a whole set of just that one game,” Deveney says. “I’ve been playing the game since launch, and Daniel said he was playing it, so our perspectives were different.” Deveney says that difference in perspective helped the two of them fine tune the FF14 Commander deck to be as authentic to the game as possible. Sometimes Deveney would want a character that Holt didn’t think was all that important; other times Deveney wouldn’t take no for an answer. “One character in particular, I had to say ‘Daniel, if they don’t make it in, I will be very upset, because someone will get very upset with me if they don’t make it in.” Summon: Bahamut A focus on Commander With so much history to parse through, and only so much space to go around in an expansion set, choosing what products received which cards or designs led to some more “spirited” discussion. “We look at the whole product as one experience, but then we have to look at each individual piece–main set, Commander, etc,” Deveney says. “Sometimes I ask myself ‘If this is the only thing a fan buys, what do they expect to see?'” For Commander specifically, which Daniel Holt was primarily focused on, it allows him to explore the four games receiving pre-constructed decks–FF6, FF7, FF10, and FF14–as their own unique stories. As Holt puts it, “in the Commander decks we got to go super deep.” “The Commander decks were almost each their own Universes Beyond product in the way we approached them,” Holt continued. “Final Fantasy VI is its own world, FFVII’s its own world. They don’t cross. Each allows us to add different things; for example, elves only appear in certain games but not in others, so we did some elf reprints in the deck for the game where they’re found. “With Final Fantasy VI, we had a graveyard recursion theme, but it’s not from death, it’s ‘lifting your allies up.’ We twisted some of the reprints to be a little more themed that way. There were a lot of creative restrictions, but also we were able to create really cool things because of it.” Kefka, Court Mage // Kefka, Ruler of Ruin Works of art One interesting fact mentioned during the press preview was in regard to some of the artists who contributed to the card’s art: Nine of them, well known for drawing Final Fantasy art throughout history, were given the option to draw whoever or whatever they wished. This opened up some interesting opportunities; even though Amano has drawn Kefka before, he’d never drawn Kefka’s final form in his entire career–until now. This led to what Verhey describes as one of the coolest moments of his life. “We’re in Japan, and we happened to be at the Square Enix office when Amano’s Kefka piece arrived. No one had seen it yet, and it came in this ****** art briefcase provided by Amano himself.” “They set it on the table, and we all just went silent, staring at an original Amano work…but at a distance, because none of us wanted to get too close and risk messing it up somehow,” Verhey continues. “Nobody sneeze, no one do anything that could put a mark on this.” Deveney says that most of the artists drew characters they’d been familiar with, but a few took the opportunity to branch out and try something new. “There were a few artists that were just like, ‘Oh, I would love an opportunity to play with this other game’s toy, because I didn’t work on it and that sounds really fun,'” Deveney explains. “They were like, ‘Oh, I’ve always wanted to draw this character!'” As iconic as Final Fantasy artwork is, the soundtracks to each of these games is just as well-known. Implementing music into a physical card game, of course, is very hard to do, but the team did try to make it work. As Deveney puts it, “those discussions totally happened.” “I’ll say that there are two or three cards that you might be happy to see have ‘wink, wink, nudge, nudge’ references to famous song titles–or moments where you can hear those songs playing–that we were able to get into the set,” Deveney says. “There’s a larger discussion about music rights and how it’s a little bit different with every industry, but yes, we were able to get a few things in there that are very intentionally referential.” Traveling Chocobo (Gold Serialized) Choosing a Headliner Recent Magic sets have incorporated a Headliner–one specific card that acts as a “chase” card, with a limited number of printings and each one individually numbered. The last set, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, used Mox Jasper–the dragon-focused Mox gem–as the Headliner, with special art from original Mox artist Dan Frazier. For Final Fantasy, the team knew it wanted to pick something every FF fan knows. Sure, they could have made the Headliner a character like Cloud or Sephiroth, but fans of FF7 would appreciate it to the fullest; fans of other games might not enjoy it as much. That’s why, for Zakeel Gordon, the choice was simple: a chocobo, specifically Traveling Chocobo. “The Chocobo was the flagship character that we wanted to push to the forefront, because it’s represented in the vast majority of games,” Gordon said. “If you are a fan of the franchise, but you only have a connection to certain games, you will recognize a Chocobo no matter what.” The team did pull from a specific game for the card–multiple variants depict multiple colored Chocobos from Final Fantasy VII–but even if a player isn’t familiar with chocobo racing, they’ll know what the bird is. What is odd about this serialized Chocobo, however, is the number of printings–where previous Headliners saw 500 copies made, the golden Traveling Chocobo will only see 77 printings. This was intentional, as the team wanted the card to feel even more special. “77 is, I think, the perfect medium for where we’ve been doing serialization recently, Gordon explains, “where it’s a little bit less rare than the “one-of-One Ring,” but it’s a little bit more rare than an “X of 500.” And, in the spirit of Final Fantasy 7, two sevens just felt like the right number.” Zidane Tribal as Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer Through The Ages One final big feature in this new expansion is Final Fantasy: Through The Ages, a bonus sheet of 64 cards–four cards for each of the 16 mainline FF games. All 64 cards are reprints of previously-released Magic cards, but the art depicted on each card comes from the authentic Square Enix archives. It’s a history lesson in cardboard form, and Dillon Deveney says they had a lot of material to parse through–over 5,000 pieces of art, to be precise. “We’d ask all kinds of questions,” Deveney said, “What do we think is the most bespoke thing that someone would want to see about this game? What’s the best version of this art? What’s the best version of this character? Should we go with a sketchy concept or fully finished illustration? Would this be a good land or an enchantment or an artifact? We went through everything.” Multiple cards from the bonus sheet were shown during the PAX East panel, including FF9’s Zidane Tribal as Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer and FF2’s Firion, Swordmaster as Sram, Senior Edificer. Previously, FF7’s Yuffie Kisaragi was unveiled as a reskin of Yuriko, the Tiger’s Shadow. “The bonus sheet was a place where we could balance each game perfectly,” Gordon said. “We allotted a ‘budget’ to each game: There will be four cards, we’re going to have a protagonist and an antagonist, and then we’ll find two moments; one maybe is more story-driven, and the other may be a little bit more mechanically driven.” — As the panel signed off on the preview, host and former MTG broadcaster Richard Hagon said that even though this is still Magic: The Gathering, there’s something about the Final Fantasy set that feels different. “You can absolutely play wonderful games of Magic with this set, the cards are there, the designs are there. But, the feelings are unique and special, and that is what people are going to remember for a very long time.” As the panel enthusiastically nodded, that feeling definitely came through from the minds behind the set. Now, all that’s left is for the players to pick up and play. Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy will be available June 13 at local game stores and big box retailers. 23. Gardens of WA: Home-grown goodness from Jenny Oldham’s vegetable patch sprouting from a disused pool Gardens of WA: Home-grown goodness from Jenny Oldham’s vegetable patch sprouting from a disused pool Like most people (I suspect), I often find myself in a precarious state of limbo, perched between the person I would like to be (the person I feel, in my bones, I truly am) and the person that current life circumstances (pregnant with a toddler) dictate I must be. This mostly affects me in the garden, where my mental image of myself is of a woman filling baskets with homegrown produce (crisp lettuces! Rosey tomatoes! Bouquets of herbs!) that she cooks into flavour-packed meals. Contrast this with my current reality: a patch of corn cobs I forgot to harvest, a front yard that has been prepped, mulched, then left entirely unplanted, and a bed of broad beans that absolutely refuse to germinate. These days, it’s easy to forget that I even like to grow my own food. That is, until I meet a gardener like Jenny Oldham, who entirely reignites my enthusiasm, reminds me of exactly how glorious it is picking produce from your garden, and pushes me to lumber back outside and sow another handful of seeds, simply by making it look so damn good. Camera IconApples grown in the garden by Jenny Oldham. It’s amazing how creative you can get with eggs — we keep chickens — and vegetables.” Camera Icon“I love being able to go out into my garden and put a meal together from scratch,” Jen says. Credit: Riley Churchman/The West *********** My phone is currently filled with images Jenny has sent me of meals she cooked during the challenge: brightly coloured soups, poached eggs on homegrown potato cakes, steamed and roasted vegetables, fresh figs (perfectly pink), and trays and trays of carrots, cabbages, tomatoes, and zucchinis. Every single photo is vibrant. It is, so clearly, the way we should all be eating. And it’s all from her garden. Camera IconJen’s garden comprises a large circle of raised beds in an area that was, once, a big round pool surrounded by tropical ornamentals. It comprises a large circle of raised beds in an area that was, once, a big round pool surrounded by tropical ornamentals. “The time came when the pool needed to be refurbished,” she explains. “We decided to bite the bullet and put the space to better use.” Now, an infrequently used pool has been turned into an overflowing food forest that feeds Jen and her family, and a medicinal garden filled with flowers, herbs and insect life. Camera IconPictured is the garden belonging to Jenny Oldham. Credit: Riley Churchman/The West *********** “I honestly feel that everyone should be growing food,” Jenny tells me. “With the cost of living going up and more time spent on screens, I think it’s really time to find some balance — to get our hands back into the soil. I don’t think there’s anything more joyful or satisfying than being able to go into your garden and pick all your veggies for dinner, knowing it’s the healthiest it can be: garden to plate.” My own edible garden exploits may be lacklustre right now, but Jenny’s garden will be my guiding light. 24. Germany will stop reporting arms deliveries to Ukraine, Merz says Germany will stop reporting arms deliveries to Ukraine, Merz says KYIV (Reuters) – The ******* government will stop publishing details of military aid to Ukraine, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Saturday during a visit to Kyiv. Sources with knowledge of the matter had earlier told Reuters that public information about the delivery of weapons systems to Ukraine was to be reduced to achieve “strategic ambiguity” and prevent Russia gaining any strategic advantages. “Under my leadership, the debate about arms deliveries, caliber, weapons systems and so on will be taken out of the public eye,” Merz told RTL/ntv broadcasters in Kyiv. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Germany’s government initially reported sporadically on military aid to Kyiv. Under pressure from parliamentarians and media, it later started publishing an updated list of systems and goods supplied. Merz, who took office on Tuesday, said Germany’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in the fight against Russia’s invasion would not change. “Germany will continue to expand its financial support. I am counting on you (…) to do the same with us,” Merz said, addressing other European leaders at a meeting in Kyiv.
