How this ‘generational shift’ impacts fitness, wellness industries How this ‘generational shift’ impacts fitness, wellness industries 00:00 Speaker A BFA data showing Gen Z and millennials are increasingly prioritizing their health, leading to some bullish commentary from Bank of America. Let’s welcome in now Alex Perry, BFA Securities leisure analyst for more. Alex, we to see you on set. 00:16 Alex Perry So, uh, what we’re seeing is we’re seeing a generational shift towards healthier habits, particularly from millennials and Gen Z, which we think, you know, should drive some, uh, some trends with some long-term staying power. So particularly in the data, a couple of things that we’ve seen are, we see that Gen Z is spending 2.8 times more than older generations, particularly baby boomers, on fitness. So we’re 00:46 Speaker A How much more, Alex? 00:48 Alex Perry 2.8 times more than baby boomers on fitness. And even more interestingly, uh, Millennials, which represent the largest spending cohort, uh, for fitness, are spending three times more than baby boomers on, on fitness. So we think that you know 01:10 Speaker A When you say fitness, we mean going to the gym, like how we, what we define fitness. 01:16 Alex Perry Yes, yes. So we define that as as fitness clubs. Um, so think of lifetime planet fitness, uh, traditional sort of brick and mortar fitness is how we would define that. So we’re we’re increasingly seeing these younger demographics, not only prioritizing fitness, but prioritizing other healthy ways of living as well. So 01:41 Speaker A So is that like eating, drinking? 01:44 Alex Perry That’s exactly right. So, uh, really focus on healthy eating, drinking, aging, recovery. So what we’re seeing is millennials and Gen Z’s are, are drinking, they’re drinking less and exercising more. So one of the ways we looked at the data, um, is that we see that spending on non-alcoholic beer and seltzer equivalent is averaging 28 points higher than the alcohol equivalent since 2021. So it’s really interesting sort of how they’re behaving. They’re also doing other things, you know, focused on other wellness modalities. They’re focused on healthy aging, healthy recovery. If you look at Google search trends for red light therapy, anti-aging masks, for example, they’re up significantly. 02:37 Speaker A So red light, more red light therapy, less bars. Is that right? 02:44 Alex Perry More, more red light therapy, less drinking, less bars, more fitness. Um, and we think this has some real staying power for, for our stock coverage as well. 03:02 Speaker A What about Alex, if, if the economy just stumble into a recession, you know, a lot of economists come on the show and tell me the odds of that are going up. That would mean what for some of these trends in terms of gym memberships and organic food and cold plunges. 03:23 Alex Perry Yeah. No, that’s a great question, Josh. So I think that what that implies, if we look at the historical data, we would see that fitness actually is, is relatively recession resilient. So we go back through 2008, 2009, lifetime was actually publicly traded at this time. Uh, a brick and mortar fitness player and same store sales were relatively flattish during this time *******, and margins actually expanded. And I think what that tells us is that fitness is a very ingrained consumer behavior. And consumers are less willing to drop fitness versus other pockets of discretionary spend. So we actually think that, you know, the, the fitness players are are recession resilient and maybe you’re going to ask about tariffs, which we think that they’re, they’re a great place for investors to, to avoid tariff related uncertainty. Um, you know, they’re 04:24 Speaker A A place of tariff relative resilience. 04:28 Alex Perry Relative resilience. That’s right. So, um, there’s probably some small fitness equipment sourcing exposure, but no direct tariff exposure for the fitness players. And we think that, you know, it’s a very interesting investment characteristic here. 04:48 Speaker A Let’s, let’s give viewers a way to play this. You’re talking off camera, top wellness pick lifetime group. 04:59 Alex Perry Yeah, lifetime. We, we think they fit squarely in the middle of what we view as these, um, younger generations prioritizing healthy ways of living. So they were really quick to identify some of the fastest growing leisure and wellness trends. Um, a great example of this is pickleball. We’ve seen an absolute surge in the popularity of pickleball. And I think it, lifetime quickly identified this trend and they started rolling out pickleball to majority of their clubs. So over 80% of their clubs now have pickleball, and they’re now the largest provider of pickleball in the US. Cold exposure therapy, which we talked a little bit about earlier, they were, they’ve been quick to sort of be on this trend and they’re rolling out cold plunge tubs to a lot of their, their clubs. So we think that, you know, they’ve identified these trends, they’re rolling them out to the clubs, and then you know, that’s warranted a, a really premium member, member experience. 06:00 Speaker A Have you guys ever thought about the data, how the role of sort of influencers on these trends? Some of the trends you’re talking about, I think of like the Andrew Huberman’s out there. They talk a lot about these trends. I just wonder what kind of, what kind of role could that be playing here? 06:19 Alex Perry Yeah, no, it’s a great question. I think it absolutely plays a huge role. Um, we’ve seen increased social media influence on, on our stock coverage. Uh, Tik Tok for instance, one of the, you know, one of the data feeds that we really look at is Tik Tok social media engagement. I think one of the things we find is that increased social media engagement leads to more buzz around different concepts. A great example of this and another wellness pick that we called out is Shark Ninja. They’re very good about. 06:57 Speaker A Why Shark Ninja? 06:59 Alex Perry So Shark Ninja has been, if, if we were to think about fitness from a, you know, experience and then from a consumer product standpoint, Shark Ninja really offers, um, an expanding wellness portfolio of, of, of product. The most recent example is the Shark Kyro Glow mask, which is a red light therapy, anti-aging mask. Um, and they are incredibly good about debuting and building buzz around their product on, on social media, particularly on Tik Tok. 07:38 Speaker A Alex, thank you so much for your time today. Super interesting trend. Appreciate your time and those picks. That was great. Thanks. 07:45 Alex Perry Thanks a lot, Josh. Thanks for having me on. ‘There Is Good Debt And There Is Bad Debt’ ‘There Is Good Debt And There Is Bad Debt’ When it comes to managing money, Suze Orman says understanding debt is a critical first step — especially for anyone hoping to improve their financial health. On a recent episode of her “Women & Money” podcast, Orman made a clear distinction between “good” debt and “bad” debt — and explained how to handle both. According to Orman, bad debt “is where you are paying for your present day desires, but your costs are going to be your future day needs.” The most common example? Credit card debt. It typically comes with high interest rates and can snowball if not addressed quickly. Don’t Miss: Orman says good debt, on the other hand, includes borrowing that may help you build your financial future. This could be a mortgage, a student loan, or even a car loan — as long as it’s used wisely. For instance, if a car is necessary to commute to work and the loan is reasonable, it may be considered a strategic expense. Even though a car loan can sometimes be a form of good debt, Orman urges caution. “Remember, if you buy a new car, the second you drive it off the lot, it goes down a good 20% or more in value,” she said. To decide whether a car loan is affordable, Orman offers a simple rule: if you can’t pay it off in three years, the car may be too expensive. Stretching payments over five, six, or seven years? That could turn a necessary expense into bad debt. Trending: Many are using retirement income calculators to check if they’re on pace — here’s a breakdown on what’s behind this formula. If you’re dealing with high-interest credit card debt, Orman recommends a few different strategies based on your credit score. For people with good credit (a FICO score of 680 or higher), she suggests looking into 0% balance transfer offers. Some credit cards offer up to 21 months with no interest, which can give you time to pay down your debt faster without extra charges. If your score is lower, balance transfers may not be an option. In that case, Orman offers a structured plan: List all credit cards by interest rate, from highest to lowest. Write down the current minimum payment due for each card — and commit to always paying at least that much going forward. Total your minimum payments. Add 20% to this number. Apply that extra 20% to the card with the highest interest rate. Once a card is paid off, roll the full amount you were paying on that card to the next highest-interest card — and repeat until you’re debt-free. Borderlands 4 Looks Less Mad Max, More Mass Effect Borderlands 4 Looks Less Mad Max, More Mass Effect Tacoboto8d ago The State of Play yesterday kinda confused me on this. The B-roll footage looked way more fun, explosive, creative, and smoother (at 60fps) than the actual gameplay demo, which was in a flat-looking metallic icy area in 30fps and seemed very run-of-the-mill in comparison. Considering the writing team is trying to avoid a specific kind of tone in their approach to the game, I wonder if it’ll be more like the B-roll and those quick exciting moments, or the latter… Source link #Borderlands #Mad #Max #Mass #Effect Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

I’m a Christian woman who moved from the *** to Saudi Arabia. It’s improved my mental health and quality of life. I’m a Christian woman who moved from the *** to Saudi Arabia. It’s improved my mental health and quality of life. Banke Adebola moved from the United Kingdom to Saudi Arabia in 2024. Adebola said her mental health has improved while living in Riyadh. She said the city is growing into a top travel destination. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Banke Adebola, 31, an accountant who moved from the United Kingdom to Saudi Arabia. She moved to the capital city, Riyadh, in May 2024. It’s been edited for length and clarity. My husband accepted a job offer three years ago, so I fit my life in about three suitcases and left my home in London. Now, I’m an accountant working remotely in Saudi Arabia. I’m not going to lie. When my husband moved to Riyadh, I said, “Let’s stay a year or two, then come back to London.” I had no idea what it would be like living here as a Christian ****** woman, but my tune has changed. I’ve surprised myself with how much I like it here. There were things about Riyadh that surprised me Since my husband already had friends living in Riyadh, finding an apartment wasn’t hard. For the first year, we rented an apartment, but we live in a compound now because it’s closer to where my husband works. Expats tend to flock to compounds because there are no dress restrictions and there are amenities. Europeans, Americans, and people from all over the world live in a compound, which is a bit pricer than a normal apartment. On the other hand, some other expats want to live with the locals. One of the first things I had to come to terms with was that Riyadh is heavily reliant on cars and driving, so most locals don’t rely on public transport. The Riyadh Metro Station opened last year, which is quite popular, but you still have to drive to the metro. In London, I would dedicate my Saturday mornings to walking around the town and grabbing a coffee on the way back. You can’t really do that here because there aren’t as many places around as in London. The Saudi government is trying to add more greenery, but it’s not really a walkable city yet. It’s too hot to walk half the year anyway because temperatures can reach 113°F. Another was how to dress. When you hear about Saudi Arabia, you might think, “Oh, I need to buy a scarf or wear an Abaya.” You don’t need to do that as an expat. If you’re not ******* or if you’re not from Saudi Arabia, there are no expectations to cover up like the locals do. You can wear whatever you want as long as you are dressed modestly and respectful of the culture. Many Saudis, or people who live in Riyadh, are *******, so it’s embedded in the culture, and you will hear prayer calls all day. During Ramadan, many stores are closed during the day because people are fasting. The local coffee shop will be open from about 7 p.m. to 2 a.m., which I hadn’t experienced before. Being Christian, it kind of encouraged me to take my faith more seriously because they take theirs very seriously. Also, the workweek in Saudi Arabia is Sunday to Thursday. I still get confused sometimes, and it’s taken me a while to adjust to it. So far, the biggest impact that it’s had on my life is that my mental health is much better here. It’s not like I hated the ***, but I always had seasonal depression. When it was winter in London, I never wanted to leave the house, but I don’t have any of that here. Even during the winter in Riyadh, it’s always sunny. It’s improved my quality of life and mental health. I just feel lighter here. Especially coming from the corporate world in London, where everything’s quick. Riyadh is a modern city that’s continuing to grow Riyadh has grown since I first visited. My husband and I have met more expats in the last six months than ever before. The government has something called Saudi Vision 2030. They’re trying to make Saudi Arabia a top travel destination, so they’ve introduced lots of new entertainment. There are lots of boxing matches now, and last year, we hosted a tennis tournament with Rafael Nadal. If you visit, you will be surprised how much you like Saudi Arabia. There are so many things tourists can do, like visiting the museums or Boulevard World, which has exhibitions of different countries showcasing the food and culture. Saudi Arabia is much more modern than people give it credit for. South Korean party’s bid to switch candidate fails South Korean party’s bid to switch candidate fails South Korea’s embattled conservative party has cancelled then reinstated the presidential candidacy of Kim Moon-soo within hours as internal turmoil escalated ahead of the country’s general election. Saturday’s chaotic U-turn, after a failed attempt to replace Kim with former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, underscored the People Power Party’s leadership crisis following the ouster of former president Yoon Suk-yeol over his martial law imposition in December, which possibly doomed the conservatives’ chances of winning another term in government. Kim, a staunch conservative and former labour minister under Yoon, was named the PPP’s presidential candidate on May 3 after winning 56.3 per cent of the primary vote, defeating a reformist rival who had criticised Yoon’s martial law. But the PPP’s leadership, dominated by Yoon loyalists, has spent the past week desperately pressuring Kim to step aside and back Han, whom they believe stands a stronger chance against progressive Democratic Party frontrunner Lee Jae-myung. After talks between Han and Kim failed to unify their candidacies, the PPP’s emergency committee took the unprecedented step early on Saturday of nullifying its primary, cancelling Kim’s nomination and registering Han as both a party member and its new presidential candidate. However, the replacement required approval through an all-party vote conducted through an automated phone survey, which ultimately rejected the switch on Saturday night. “While we cannot disclose the figures, the vote on switching the candidate was rejected by a narrow margin,” party spokesman and lawmaker Shin *****-wook said. Kim, who had denounced the party’s attempt to replace him as an “overnight political coup,” was immediately reinstated as the candidate and plans to officially register with election authorities on Sunday. “Now everything will return to its rightful place,” Kim said in a statement. Kim, 73, was a prominent labour activist in the 1970s and 80s but joined a conservative party in the 1990s, saying he gave up his dream of becoming “a revolutionist” after witnessing the collapse of ********** states. Since then, he has served eight years as governor of South Korea’s Gyeonggi province and completed three terms in the National Assembly. Han served as acting president after Yoon was impeached by the legislature in December and officially removed by the Constitutional Court in April. He resigned from office May 2 to pursue a presidential bid, arguing his long public service career qualifies him to lead the country amid growing geopolitical uncertainty and trade challenges intensified by the policies of US President Donald Trump. Han, who had called for unity after being promoted as the candidate, said in a statement that he “humbly accepts” the voice of party members. Han and Kim have lagged well behind Lee in recent opinion polls. Lee, who spearheaded the Democrats’ efforts to oust Yoon, ridiculed the PPP efforts to switch candidacies, telling reporters on Thursday, “I have heard of forced marriages but never heard of forced unity”. Sell in May and go away? Historic volatility is crushing investors’ favorite seasonal indicators. Sell in May and go away? Historic volatility is crushing investors’ favorite seasonal indicators. TIMOTHY A. CLARY/AFP via Getty Images The old motto “sell in May and go away” might not be a great guideline this year. Trade war, tax policy, and debt ceiling risks are skewing seasonal norms, analysts told ***. May tends to outperform in a postelection year. In a market dominated by shocking headlines and policy whiplash, seasonal mottos like the old favorite, “sell in May and go away,” might need a rethink. After an unprecedented stretch of years for investors, marked by a pandemic, the highest inflation in four decades, and now a sweeping trade war, market strategists say seasonality has become much harder to predict. “I don’t think seasonal norms will be as useful in such an uncertain policy environment,” Ross Mayfield, an investment strategist at Baird Wealth, told Business Insider. “The outcomes of the tariff, trade war, tax bill, and debt ceiling will have far more of an impact on returns than seasonal patterns.” It became obvious before 2025 even began that trading this year might be off-kilter. Consider that the annual “Santa Claus rally” failed to manifest in December, as earlier gains in the S&P 500 led to a rare decline that month. Meanwhile, April — typically one of the year’s three best-performing months — saw the S&P 500 fall 1.1% as tariff escalations sent volatility soaring and investors fleeing stocks. “Sell in May and go away” is tried and true—LPL Financial says the adage can be traced to London as far back as 1776—and it reminds investors that the summer months tend to be slow for the market. Since 1950, the six-month ******* between May and October has seen a mild gain of about 1.8%. This year, though, it’s anyone’s guess what could happen amid the trade war, a potential recession, and ongoing geopolitical strife. “In a benign environment, you would expect to see your positive seasonal trends, but, especially after the last six weeks, who knows what we’re going to be talking about,” Bespoke Investment Group co-founder Paul Hickey told ***. If historically strong months are flopping this year, then the summer may hold its own surprises, too. “When it comes to markets, tariff uncertainty and monetary policy right now have the power to make it rain or part clouds into sunshine,” Adam Turnquist, LPL Financial’s chief technical strategist, wrote in late April. To be sure, there are some positive catalysts that could occur in the “sell in May” window: trade deals are no longer just talk, and President Donald Trump’s promised pro-growth policies are expected to take center stage later in the year. Story Continues Yet, recession risk will continue to loom over investors, while other commentators warn that future trade deals are already priced in and won’t fuel more gains. In fact, Pepperstone’s Senior Research Strategist, Michael Brown, suggested that investors do listen to the May adage and sell into rallies. “The balance of risks does tilt in favour of that saying ringing true this year, given the huge degree of trade uncertainty, chunky downside economic growth risks, and considering how the recent relative calm on the tariff front seems to have lulled investors into a bit of a false sense of security,” he wrote this month. But recent years should give investors even more pause before trusting the usual seasonal indicators. Mayfield told *** that stocks have been performing better in the six months between May and October lately, returning 4.6% over the last 10 years. In three of the last five years, this timeframe yielded double-digit gains. That could be true this time around, given that an ultra-bullish market signal was triggered in late April. The Zweig Breadth Thrust indicator, which measures broad stock market participation in an ongoing rally, historically boosts the market through seasonal stagnation, the Leuthold Group wrote recently. Meanwhile, data tracked by Carson Group’s chief market strategist Ryan Detrick found that buying in May has made more sense in recent years, and the month is especially strong in postelection years, he wrote, rising by 1.6% on average. Which US airlines fared worst in J.D. Power’s customer satisfaction survey? Which US airlines fared worst in J.D. Power’s customer satisfaction survey? (WJET/WFXP) — The results of a 2025 study from J.D. Power shows that airlines are seeing an overall improvement in customer satisfaction. Overall satisfaction among travelers on North American airlines during a 12-month ******* — March 2024 to May 2025 — was actually up 6 points over 2024, according to the data analytics firm. But it wasn’t a consistent across the board. The survey results showed that passengers who flew economy and basic economy were the most satisfied, driving an 8-point increase, while those in premium economy and business/first class were actually less satisfied year-over-year, dropping 7 points and 1 point, respectively. Passengers weren’t equally satisfied with carriers, either. J.D. Power’s analysts surveyed more than 10,000 travelers to determine their satisfaction across seven areas, which the company lists as “airline staff; digital tools; ease of travel; level of trust; on-board experience; pre/post-flight experience; and value for price paid.” The results were also divided into three segments, with one each representing those who flew first/business class, premium economy and economy/basic. Airline satisfaction ratings among first/business class passengers This year, JetBlue Airways overtook Delta Air Lines in the first/business class category, taking the top spot in customer satisfaction with a score of 738 out of a scale of 1,000 points. Delta fell to second with 724 points, after it beat out JetBlue in last year’s study. Airline satisfaction ratings among premium economy passengers For the premium economy segment, Delta took first place for the third year in a row with 717 points, with JetBlue coming in second with 699 points. Airline satisfaction ratings among economy/basic economy passengers As for the economy and basic economy class, Southwest Airlines remains on top for a fourth consecutive year with 694 points, with JetBlue Airlines in second place with 663 points. Another takeaway was that falling fares and less-crowded planes had “helped keep overall passenger satisfaction levels high,” according to J.D. Power executive Michael Taylor. “But it’s clear that market dynamics are changing and will likely affect passenger experience in the coming weeks and months,” Taylor added. “Airlines will likely have a tougher year this year, economically, but the key to their longer-term success will be how well they manage economic headwinds without compromising on customer experience.” Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Reporting mistakes helps us improve the experience.Generate Key Takeaways One of Russia’s most prominent officials has rejected, in vulgar terms, Ukraine’s proposal for a 30-day ceasefire beginning Monday. Dmitry Medvedev, the former president of Russia and the current deputy head of the National Security Council, panned the plan in a post on X, writing in English that its authors could “shove these peace plans up your pangender arses!” The ceasefire proposal was made as Germany’s Friedrich Merz, France’s Emmanuel Macron, the ***’s Keir Starmer and Poland’s Donald Tusk visited Kiev on Saturday for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The leaders also warned that sanctions would follow if Russia rejected the plan. “Macron, Merz, Starmer, and Tusk were supposed to discuss peace in Kiev. Instead, they are blurting out threats against Russia,” Medvedev, who is known for his frequent use of inflammatory language, wrote. Separately, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said before the ultimatum was issued that Russia would not be swayed by sanctions. He argued that any ceasefire must not allow Kiev to reposition its forces and named a halt to Western arms deliveries as a prerequisite for Moscow to consider the 30-day truce. Netflix is removing Black Mirror: Bandersnatch this month

Netflix is removing ****** Mirror: Bandersnatch this month Netflix is removing ****** Mirror: Bandersnatch this month In a continued effort to rid the streamer of interactive films, Netflix has put in motion ****** Mirror: Bandersnatch getting removed from the service later this month alongside Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend. The removal marks a complete end to the interactive specials, which were already almost all out the door late last year. This comes as the TV app sees an overhaul with playable games using smartphones as controllers. This decision is kind of funny as ****** Mirror: Bandersnatch was a massive success at the time, even leading to promises to double down on interactive programs. Of course, that was 2019 and we’re now in 2025 where it seems Netflix is convinced entering the gaming scene is the best way to ensure success, even as it fails to keep the lights on at its very own AAA game dev studio. ****** Mirror: Bandersnatch and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend are available until they’re pulled on May 12. Police continue to question Iranian men over alleged terror plot Police continue to question Iranian men over alleged terror plot BBC Counter-terrorism officers making an arrest Police have been given more time to question four Iranian men over an alleged terror plot in the ***. The men were arrested on 3 May on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act, the Metropolitan Police said. The suspects, detained under the Terrorism Act, can be held until 17 May after the force obtained warrants to further extend their detention. A fifth Iranian man, who was detained under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, has been released on bail with conditions. The five men – two aged 29, a 40-year-old, a 24-year-old and another aged 46 – on 3 May – were arrested in Swindon, west London, Stockport, Rochdale and Manchester. The Met said officers were continuing search a number of addresses in the Greater Manchester, London and Swindon areas. Cdr Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s counter terrorism command, said it was a “significant and highly complex investigation”. He urged the public not to “speculate or share information” that has not been confirmed by police. The Met has previously said it believes “a specific premises” was the target of the suspected plot. The BBC understands the alleged target was the Israeli embassy in London, as first reported by the Times. Police have not yet confirmed the embassy was the suspected target, citing operational reasons. Three other Iranian men – aged 39, 44 and 55 – were arrested on the same day in London in relation to a separate counter-terrorism investigation. They were arrested under section 27 of the National Security Act, which covers offences deemed a threat to national security. On Friday, police said a fourth man, 31, had been arrested in north-west London as part of the same investigation. Cdr Murphy has said police are not linking the two investigations. Speaking in the Commons on Tuesday, Home Office minister Dan Jarvis described the two separate investigations as “some of the largest counter-state threats and counter-terrorism actions that we have seen in recent times”. World watching as tariff talks begin between U.S. and ******** officials in Geneva – National World watching as tariff talks begin between U.S. and ******** officials in Geneva – National The U.S. treasury secretary and America’s top trade negotiator began talks with high-ranking ******** officials in Switzerland Saturday aiming to de-escalate a dispute that threatens to cut off trade between the world’s two biggest economies and damage the global economy. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer have begun meetings in Geneva with a ******** delegation led by Vice Premier He Lifeng. Diplomats from both sides also confirmed that the talks have begun but spoke anonymously. A motorcade of ****** cars and vans was seen coming and going from the home of the Swiss ambassador to the United Nations delegation in the wealthy city, and a diplomatic source, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the meeting, said the sides met for about two hours before departing for a previously arranged luncheon. 1:44 Canada’s jobless rate ticks up as Trump’s tariffs cause cracks in labour market The talks were taking place in the sumptuous 18th-century “Villa Saladin” overlooking Lake Geneva. The former estate was bequeathed to the Swiss state in 1973, according to the Geneva government. Story continues below advertisement Prospects for a major breakthrough appear dim. But there is hope that the two countries will scale back the massive taxes — tariffs — they’ve slapped on each other’s goods, a move that would relieve world financial markets and companies on both sides of the Pacific Ocean that depend on U.S.-China trade. U.S. President Donald Trump last month raised U.S. tariffs on China to a combined 145%, and China retaliated by hitting American imports with a 125% levy. Tariffs that high essentially amount to the countries’ boycotting each other’s products, disrupting trade that last year topped $660 billion. Even before the talks began, Trump suggested Friday that the U.S. could lower its tariffs on China, saying in a Truth Social post that “ 80% Tariff seems right! Up to Scott.″ Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. Sun Yun, director of the China program at the Stimson Center, noted it will be the first time He and Bessent have talked. She doubts the Geneva meeting will produce any substantive results. “The best scenario is for the two sides to agree to de-escalate on the … tariffs at the same time,” she said, adding even a small reduction would send a positive signal. “It cannot just be words.” 0:42 Trump will not ‘unilaterally’ lower 145% tariff on China, White House says Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has aggressively used tariffs as his favorite economic weapon. He has, for example, imposed a 10% tax on imports from almost every country in the world. Story continues below advertisement But the fight with China has been the most intense. His tariffs on China include a 20% charge meant to pressure Beijing into doing more to stop the flow of the synthetic opioid fentanyl into the United States. The remaining 125% involve a dispute that dates back to Trump’s first term and comes atop tariffs he levied on China back then, which means the total tariffs on some ******** goods can exceed 145%. During Trump’s first term, the U.S. alleged that China uses unfair tactics to give itself an edge in advanced technologies such as quantum computing and driverless cars. These include forcing U.S. and other foreign companies to hand over trade secrets in exchange for access to the ******** market; using government money to subsidize domestic tech firms; and outright theft of sensitive technologies. Those issues were never fully resolved. After nearly two years of negotiation, the United States and China reached a so-called Phase One agreement in January 2020. The U.S. agreed then not to go ahead with even higher tariffs on China, and Beijing agreed to buy more American products. The tough issues — such as China’s subsidies — were left for future negotiations. Story continues below advertisement The fight over China’s tech policy now resumes. Trump is also agitated by America’s massive trade deficit with China, which came to $263 billion last year. In Switzerland Friday, Bessent and Greer also met with Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter. Trump last month suspended plans to slap hefty 31% tariffs on Swiss goods — more than the 20% levies he plastered on exports from European Union. For now, he’s reduced those taxes to 10% but could raise them again. The government in Bern is taking a cautious approach. But it has warned of the impact on crucial Swiss industries like watches, coffee capsules, cheese and chocolate. 2:24 What did Carney and Trump talk about in their first sit-down? “An increase in trade tensions is not in Switzerland’s interests. Countermeasures against U.S. tariff increases would entail costs for the Swiss economy, in particular by making imports from the USA more expensive,” the government said last week, adding that the executive branch “is therefore not planning to impose any countermeasures at the present time.” Story continues below advertisement The government said Swiss exports to the United States on Saturday were subject to an additional 10% tariff, and another 21% beginning Wednesday. The United States is Switzerland’s second-biggest trading partner after the EU – the 27-member-country bloc that nearly surrounds the wealthy Alpine country of more than 9 million. U.S.-Swiss trade in goods and services has quadrupled over the last two decades, the government said. The Swiss government said Switzerland abolished all industrial tariffs on Jan. 1 last year, meaning that 99% of all goods from the United States can be imported into Switzerland duty-free. Social Security Reduces Overpayment Withholding Rate, Experts Warn Of Fallout Social Security Reduces Overpayment Withholding Rate, Experts Warn Of Fallout A recent shift in how the Social Security Administration handles benefit overpayments may offer partial relief — but it still comes with serious consequences. Effective April 25, the SSA began withholding up to 50% of monthly Title II benefits, such as retirement, disability, or survivor payments, from those who received overpayments. While that’s a step back from the previously announced 100% clawback, experts say the new policy can still leave retirees and other beneficiaries in financial distress. Don’t Miss: Overpayments happen when the SSA sends out more money than a person is actually owed. This can occur for several reasons, including agency errors or delays in processing information — like changes to a beneficiary’s income, living situation, or marital status. When the SSA determines that an overpayment has occurred, it sends a notice asking for full and immediate repayment. If the beneficiary doesn’t respond within roughly 90 days — by requesting a waiver, a reconsideration, or a lower repayment rate — the SSA begins automatically withholding funds. According to an emergency message from the SSA, the new policy sets a default withholding rate of 50% for all new overpayment notices beginning April 25. This means half of a beneficiary’s monthly check may be withheld until the debt is paid off — unless they take action. Trending: The average American couple has saved this much money for retirement — How do you compare? The SSA’s decision follows backlash against a previous plan to withhold 100% of benefits for overpaid recipients. That plan, announced earlier this year, would have left some individuals without any income at all. Critics, including advocacy organizations and lawmakers, called the full clawback “draconian.” While the reduced rate is seen as progress, it’s far from a full solution. “If you’re relying on your benefits to pay your rent or your mortgage and buy food, losing half of that income is going to be devastating and can still result in people becoming homeless,” Kate Lang, director of federal income security at Justice in Aging, told CNBC. Story Continues Richard Fiesta, executive director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, told CNBC the change still risks causing “immediate economic hardship” for many, particularly when the overpayment was not the beneficiary’s fault. See Also: If You’re Age 35, 50, or 60: Here’s How Much You Should Have Saved Vs. Invested By Now Yes — but it’s not always straightforward. Beneficiaries can request a reconsideration, a waiver, or a lower withholding rate. However, responses can vary depending on the SSA employee handling the case. “There are thousands of employees that individual beneficiaries are going to be dealing with to ask for a waiver or ask to negotiate a different repayment rate,” Lang said. “And those employees have a lot of discretion in what they decide.” Plus, long wait times for SSA appointments can make it harder for people to respond in time. If you get a notice, act quickly. According to the SSA, you typically have about 90 days to challenge it before the SSA begins withholding up to 50% of your monthly benefit. Experts recommend contacting the SSA as soon as possible to explore your options. You may be able to reduce the withholding rate or avoid repayment altogether if you weren’t at fault for the overpayment. While the SSA’s decision to cut the withholding rate from 100% to 50% may sound like good news, the fallout could still be serious for many retirees. Stay informed, respond quickly to any overpayment notice, and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it. Read Next: Image: Shutterstock UNLOCKED: 5 NEW TRADES EVERY WEEK.
