24-year-old American moved to Belgium and lives on $1,132 a month 24-year-old American moved to Belgium and lives on $1,132 a month Colby Grey, 24, grew up in a very rural and conservative community in San Luis Obispo, California. It wasn’t until moving two hours away to attend the University of California, Santa Cruz, that he traveled that far for the first time. It was the beginning of a new life for Grey — he just didn’t know it yet. “Not many people in my town had passports. You didn’t really travel much and you didn’t go to school very far either,” Grey tells CNBC Make It. “I was one of the ones that went further and then when I studied abroad, I was one of the first to leave the country.” Grey lived on campus at the start of his freshman year but the covid-19 pandemic completely disrupted his time there. By the second semester, Grey was forced to move home for about a year. It was during this time back in San Luis Obispo that Grey explored studying abroad. Grey studied in Copenhagen for six months. When that time was up, he didn’t want to head back to Santa Cruz. “[Denmark] managed the pandemic really well and had a very high vaccination rate,” he says. “I fell in love with it and decided I wanted to do more.” Grey completed a Semester at Sea before finally going home to California. “When I came back to Santa Cruz, it was a real reverse culture shock for me,” he says. “There was no housing left there. The city is really not built for students.” Since first visiting Europe in 2021 and relocating in 2023, Grey has traveled to 20 different countries. Colby Grey Back in Santa Cruz, Grey lived off campus in a two-bedroom apartment with three other roommates and worked as a study abroad advisor. Grey’s share of the rent was $1,340 a month, according to documents reviewed by CNBC Make It. “I was paying more to live in Santa Cruz than I had been paying to live abroad. I said to myself I couldn’t do it anymore,” Grey says. “I knew that after I was done [with undergrad] I would apply for a master’s degree in Belgium.” Grey says his primary motivation for wanting to leave the United States is that life in the cities there never resonated with him — and he hated driving. “That was one of the things that I loved about living in Europe, I never felt like I needed a car to live,” he says. Grey was also unhappy with the quality of education he received at UC Santa Cruz, primarily because of the cost. For the 2024-2025 school year, the average cost for in-state students living on campus is $44,160. Grey’s classes were canceled for more than half a semester one year and he still had to pay for the entire thing. “It just didn’t seem like I was getting what I paid for even with a ton of federal and state funding,” Grey says. “I knew there had to be a better system and a better way to get an education. Through my study abroad job, I realized I could just get a visa and study as an international student for a sixth of the price.” “I wanted to continue my education, but I wanted to use that as a pathway towards residency.” Grey and friends attended the famous EDM festival, Tomorrowland. Colby Grey Grey decided to go for his master’s degree and considered programs in the ***, like at Cambridge University, the University of Oxford, and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, but he couldn’t justify the cost. That led Grey to Leuven, Belgium, which seemed like the perfect choice. Leuven was built to be a “15-minute city,” an urban planning concept where most daily necessities like shopping, healthcare, and more can be reached within a 15-minute walk or bike ride. The concept is gaining traction in other Belgian cities like Brussels and Mechelen and exists in major cities like Paris, France, Barcelona, Spain and Melbourne, Australia. In Leuven, cars are banned in the city center and it is easy — and encouraged — to get around on bike. “I fell in love with it and loved that Belgium was centrally located, so I could travel, too,” he says “There are four different countries around me within a three-hour train ride, and that was very unique.” The KU Leuven university in Belgium offers a program for degree-seeking students called a search permit. This permit allows students or researchers to stay for a year and work unrestricted as long as they obtain a master’s degree from a university in the country. It’s a one-year program, and the tuition cost is about 3,800 euros a year or $4,310 USD. “As a student, though, there is no better cost of living. There is nothing better economically than being in Europe. There’s no reason to go into debt here, so it just makes sense at this stage in my life,” he says. Grey’s family came to visit him in Belgium and they took a trip over to Italy together. Colby Grey Grey arrived in Belgium with two checked bags and a backpack, and move into a four-bedroom house with three other people. He paid 500 euros or $567 a month in rent: “It was fantastic. I mean I was paying a third of the price to get my own room.” He set out immediately to build a life in Leuven. “When I first got here, it was daunting. I was aware of the fact that I had no friends here and I was totally on my own,” he says. “I think that was the first time I ever felt like that in my life. I worked really hard to make friends and make a community here.” After graduating from KU Leuven, Grey took a bike trip from Andermatt to Basel, Switzerland. Colby Grey Grey graduated last summer and moved about a 10-minute bike ride outside the city. He pays 420 euros a month in rent, including utilities. His current housing also provides some toiletries and some food, too. Grey’s additional monthly expenses include 236 euros in groceries, 154 euros in eating out, 11 euros in health insurance and medical visits, 48 euros in transit, 50 euros for the gym, 30 euros on wellness, 20 euros on visa fees, 20 euros in clothing and 10 euros in subscriptions. Including his rent, Grey’s total monthly expenses are about $998 euros a month or $1,132. Grey has lived in Belgium for almost two years now, and says he loves the work-life balance he’s been able to find there. “The community feels so strong here and I have a really great balance between my work life and my home life,” he says. “It’s such a slower pace of life here and it’s really beautiful.” Grey says he loves the work-life balance he’s been able to find since leaving the United States. Colby Grey Since first visiting Europe in 2021 and relocating in 2023, Grey has traveled to 20 different countries. His family and friends have all come visit, too. In 2024, Grey’s family came to Belgium and they took a trip over to Tuscany. He returned to the U.S. for the first time that December. Grey has seven months left on his search permit and he’s thinking about his next steps, which could include a second master’s degree and traineeship in Brussels or Portugal. The one thing Grey does know for sure is that he isn’t ready to return to America just yet. “Living in the U.S. I felt there was a ticking clock inside of me where I had to get into the workforce, get a house, have a family and I think now I’ve slowed down a little bit and kind of just smelled the roses a little bit more,” he says. Conversions from euros to USD were done using the OANDA conversion rate of 1 euro to 1.13 USD on May 8, 2025. All amounts are rounded to the nearest dollar. Why weight loss injections like Mounjaro are hurting diet industry Why weight loss injections like Mounjaro are hurting diet industry Ruth Clegg Health and wellbeing reporter BBC Symone, who used to be a WeightWatchers member, now uses weight loss jab Mounjaro Symone has been using weight loss injections for nearly a year. She says they have done what the diet industry could never do for her – free her from a life controlled by food. From a very young age, the 34-year-old could not switch off the constant noise in her head. When would her next meal come? What would it be? Would there be enough for her? “The food noise was just so loud, it could be unbearable,” she says. “I have tried every single diet going – I’ve done Atkins, eating clean, SlimFast, Slimming World, meal-replacement shakes – you name it – I’ve done it and none have them worked for me.” Several years ago, weighing 16st (102kg), she was one of the many millions who signed up to WeightWatchers, downloading the app and meticulously following its points plan, scanning in everything she ate and staying within her daily points budget. WeightWatchers attributes points to food and drink, stating that it uses a “groundbreaking algorithm” to assess their nutritional makeup and then uses a point system to inform its members which food is better to eat. But after a few weeks, Symone says she started to feel like she was being set up to fail. “How could I lose weight long term if I had to follow this mad points system? Food is not measured in points – it’s measured in calories, ****, macro nutrients. “I felt trapped, and the more research I did, the more I educated myself, the more I thought this is not for me.” The only thing that has ever worked in her quest to lose weight, she says, is weight loss injection Mounjaro, which she started using nearly a year ago. “I was at my heaviest, just over 21 stone, and the doctor told me I was pre-diabetic. I knew something had to change – I’ve got two children who depend on me too.” Symone felt disappointed with using point-based systems for food and drink She was advised to start on the weight loss medication but with a two-year wait, she decided to buy it privately online and within just a few days, she was crying with relief. “I couldn’t believe that I had control over food. For the first time, I wasn’t panicking about when I would next eat.” Weight loss jabs work by mimicking a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which suppresses people’s appetites and makes them feel full. Symone has now lost 4st 7lb (26kg) and is losing weight gradually, documenting her experiences on social media. “I don’t want a quick fix,” she says, “I’m using weight loss injections to give me the control I never had.” Lost a million members For many, weight loss jabs can produce rapid results, but some experts are concerned about the meteoric rise in their popularity and how people will be affected by them long term – both physically and mentally. At its peak, WeightWatchers was seen as being synonymous with safe and controlled weight loss. With 4.5million subscribers globally, its workshops were held in most towns, on most high streets, popping up in local church halls – they were everywhere. Now, after dominating the diet industry for more than half a century, it has lost more than a million members and filed for bankruptcy, struggling to compete in a market transformed by social media influencers and weight loss injections. The company has stressed that it is not going out of business and that filing for bankruptcy will help it resolve its debt of $1.25bn (£860m). In a statement, the brand says its weight loss programme (which also includes its own brand of weight loss jabs) and weight loss workshops will continue. The company says it has been the brand with the most scientific backing in the diet industry for over 60 years, and that there have been more than 180 published studies showing the effectiveness of its approach. WeightWatchers says it uses an “holistic model of care” to support “the whole person” with “access to obesity-trained clinicians and registered dietitians”. It is also one of several companies GPs can use for weight loss referrals, with the NHS paying for patients to attend weekly meetings in the community. “It’s no longer about calorie control and diets,” Deanne *****, clinical director of the National Centre for Eating Disorders, told the BBC. “There’s a new movement out there and it’s all about wellbeing. “People like to move in tribes – it used to be the WeightWatchers tribe, counting points and calories, now millions follow different ways to lose weight or be healthy through social media influencers, through weight loss drugs, and they’re forming new tribes.” She is not convinced that medication will be the answer that so many are looking for. “None of these pharmaceutical interventions protect people from regaining the weight when they stop injecting.” She believes they are not a quick fix, and that the best way to effectively lose weight and keep it off is to understand the psychological reasons behind overeating. Reuters Some people are turning to weight loss injections like Mounjaro More holistic approach Dr Joanne Silver, lead psychologist at the London-based eating disorder clinic, Orri, agrees. She says the weight loss injections “completely silence what the body is asking for”, which is counterintuitive to understanding what the body needs. “People can binge eat because of psychological reasons – they can use food to manage their emotions, to soothe themselves. “Eating disorders are not just about food.” Food and nutrition have become just one part of a more holistic approach so many are now adopting when it comes to their overall wellbeing. Jennifer Pybis, a fitness coach based in Liverpool, works with clients both online and in person. She says achieving a healthy lifestyle is not just about hitting a target weight. “I encourage the women I work with to consider lots of ways to measure their progress rather than just jumping on the scales. “Thinking about how they feel, comparing photographs of themselves to see how their bodies have changed shape, how their sleep is, their resting heart rate, their improvements in the gym – all of that is so important.” The diet industry might be transforming but there are many who still prefer the more traditional model of sitting together and sharing their experiences, supporting others in their community to lose weight. In a small church hall in Winsford, Cheshire, a group of women are waiting patiently to get on the scales. Muttering and good-natured laughter can be heard as they share their latest weights with each other. “I’ve put on a pound! I did have a little bit – well maybe a lot – of wine at the weekend.” “Why didn’t you have ****?” another one asks, “it’s only 55 calories a shot!” They’re here for their weekly check-in at the BeeWeighed slimming group. Some of the women have lost several pounds, others have a put on a pound or two, but overall, since joining the class, they have all lost weight. They are learning about how to eat in moderation, how to exercise safely and how to feel good about themselves. At first glance, it could be a WeightWatchers class – women meeting up to share their stories of weight loss and support each other – but there are crucial differences, says BeeWeighed owner and founder Lynda Leadbetter. She was a group leader for WeightWatchers for 18 years but left to set up her own group in 2018. Lynda Leadbetter believes WeightWatchers ‘lost its way’ “I think WeightWatchers did provide something different and something hopeful for so many women but I think it has lost its way,” she says. “I teach nutrition, I educate, I don’t sell anything extra. I feel WeightWatchers became about selling extra products, it was always about pushing those extra sales, and not about supporting people to lose weight properly.” She’s sceptical about the effectiveness of weight loss medications, and some members who have turned to the likes of Ozempic and WeGovy have left her groups, but many have stayed – continuing to attend the meetings for support while using weight loss injections. Members of BeeWeighed attend a weekly in-person check-in Kathryn Brady, 38, has been a member of BeeWeighed since 2023, and in that time, she’s lost over three stone. But with her wedding in a matter of weeks, the burlesque dancer has started to take Mounjaro to lose weight more rapidly. It’s not quite worked out as she had hoped. “I’ve been on Mounjaro for over a month now, and while I lost 6lb in the first week or so, I’ve put half of that back on. “Having absolutely no appetite for two weeks was really weird and I’m paying a lot of money to not lose that much weight.” She’s going to keep on using it, but she’s not completely sold yet. “Even if I continue with the skinny jab, I’ll still attend BeeWeighed, having others there supporting me keeps me going.” Source link #weight #loss #injections #Mounjaro #hurting #diet #industry Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Russia faces sanctions without truce: European leaders Russia faces sanctions without truce: European leaders Major European powers have thrown their weight behind an unconditional 30-day Ukraine ceasefire, with the backing of US President Donald Trump, and threatened President Vladimir Putin with “massive” new sanctions if he did not accept within days. The leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Poland and Ukraine set the start of the ceasefire for May 12 at a meeting in Kyiv, during which they held a phone call with Trump. “So all of us here together with the US are calling Putin out. If he is serious about peace, then he has a chance to show it,” *** Prime Minister Keir Starmer told a press conference. “No more ifs and buts, no more conditions and delays.” Soon after the European leaders’ announcement, the Kremlin appeared guarded. “We hear many contradictory statements from Europe. They are generally confrontational in nature rather than aimed at trying to revive our relations. Nothing more,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by Russian news agency Interfax. Putin “has repeatedly said that he is ready for contacts with any leaders,” Peskov said. “And he is open to interaction, to dialogue with any leaders to the extent that the leaders themselves are ready.” Sanctions against Russia have been toughened repeatedly since its full-scale invasion in 2022, without ending the war. Trump, who did not immediately comment publicly on the European leaders’ remarks, has also signalled frustration with what the US views as Putin’s foot-dragging over a ceasefire. “In the event that the ceasefire is violated, massive sanctions will be prepared, in co-ordination between the Europeans and the United States,” French President Emmanuel Macron said. By imposing new sanctions, the White House would be aligning itself more closely with western Europe, which has been rattled by a trade war in which Trump has imposed tariffs on them and other countries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he and the visiting leaders had agreed the unconditional ceasefire must start on Monday and cover air, sea and land. After the conclusion of the summit in Kyiv, we all spoke with @POTUS. It was a good conversation — positive and concrete. I am grateful to President Trump. We share a common view: an immediate, full, and unconditional ceasefire is needed for at least 30 days. We propose it begin…— Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) May 10, 2025 If Russia refused, it would face new sanctions, including the strengthening of punitive measures targeting its energy and banking sectors, he said. Peskov had been quoted as saying on Friday that Russia supported the implementation of a 30-day ceasefire but only with due consideration of “nuances”. In remarks to US broadcaster ABC, Peskov had suggested foreign military assistance for Ukraine must stop for a temporary ceasefire to take effect. “Otherwise it will be an advantage for Ukraine,” he said. Macron said that if the ceasefire went ahead, it would be monitored mainly by the US while European countries would contribute. The European leaders said the terms of a peace deal would be negotiated during the 30-day pause in fighting. “We have no illusions that the ceasefire will be breached,” Zelenskiy said. On the eve of the summit, the US embassy in Kyiv warned of a “potentially significant” air attack in the coming days. When the European leaders arrived in Kyiv by train on Saturday, a screen on the platform announced the arrival of the “Bravery Express”. Zelenskiy accompanied them as they paid their respects at a Kyiv memorial honouring Ukrainian soldiers killed in the war. The visit falls on the final day of a May 8-10 ceasefire declared by Putin that Ukraine did not accept, denouncing it as a sham. Both sides have accused each other of violating it. Reuters journalists at a field hospital near the front line in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region saw soldiers being brought in with combat injuries sustained since the Russian ceasefire began. “There hasn’t been any ceasefire, shelling has continued just as before, drones are flying just like before, the same with explosives being dropped. Nothing has changed at all,” said a wounded soldier who gave his name as Stanislav. The Dark Ages’ Changing Iconic Difficulty Level System The Dark Ages’ Changing Iconic Difficulty Level System When Doom: The Dark Ages launches on May 15, it will give us new weapons, demons, and a whole new story with the Doom Slayer. But one thing that won’t be joining us this time is the ‘I’m too young to die!’ difficulty setting. And as you’d expect, fans aren’t too happy that it’s been changed to a new name. The easiest setting in the game has been renamed to ‘Aspiring Slayer,’ and fans are just confused by it. Why was it changed when there’s no real change in difficulty, and it’s not like the shift achieves something thematically? In fact, it makes less sense. Luckily, you’ll never see it again after you choose. Doom: The Dark Ages has changed a fan-favorite difficulty setting, and no one’s happy The easiest setting in Doom: The Dark Ages is the Aspiring Slayer difficulty, and it kinda lacks the charm of what previous Doom games had. Redditor u/Superb_Dentist_8323 said in their post, “I’m sorry but changing ‘I’m too young to die!’ is really lame.” A lot of fellow Redditors also commented and echoed the feeling. Though not all community feedback has been negative. Comment byu/Superb_Dentist_8323 from discussion inDoom Comment byu/Superb_Dentist_8323 from discussion inDoom Another user, u/Randomman16, pointed out that even Hey, Not Too Rough, which used to be considered the franchise’s default “easy” setting, has been removed entirely from the newer games. “Im also kinda confused about the modern games removing “Hey, Not Too Rough” entirely, when HNTR was supposed to be Easy and ITYTD was Very Easy,” they said. Another commenter criticized the fact that this is also a bit inconsistent with the theme. “It doesn’t even match with the rest of the difficulty names. What a stupid change,” said u/wiggedbaldy. The feedback is definitely mostly negative for most players who think the change is an offense to what made Doom… well, Doom. This doesn’t affect the fact that the game is good There are so many new features and a prequel story for the Doom Slayer. | Image Credit: id Software That said, there’s more to Doom: The Dark Ages than a controversial menu change. The game is a big step for the franchise regarding features and story, and is a prequel to 2016’s Doom reboot. But if we’re still discussing difficulty, it’s more than just options on a menu. The game has a menu of detailed sliders that adjust nearly every combat mechanic so that we can adjust every detail. After seeing the reviews for DOOM: The Dark Ages, id Software has just achieved legendary status once again. I’m so ******** hyped next week #doomthedarkages #doom pic.twitter.com/EzyPxJy1vp — Deadn00b (just vibin) (@Deadn00b2) May 9, 2025 And beyond the difficulty system, there’s a lot for fans to be excited about. Since it’s a prequel to the 2016 reboot, the game takes place in a more medieval world, which means we can expect a story showing us how the Doom Slayer becomes the powerhouse we know today. There are also going to be new weapons, mounts, and much more. The new Aspiring Slayer difficulty will never replace I’m Too Young to Die for many fans, but thankfully, it’s a small detail that won’t actually affect the gameplay. So ultimately, it shouldn’t affect how good or bad the game ends up being. Doom: The Dark Ages is set to release on May 15, 2025, for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game will also be a day one release on Xbox Game Pass. Will you be getting it at launch? Let us know in the comments! AMD RX 9060 XT GPU retailer listings start at $450 AMD RX 9060 XT GPU retailer listings start at $450 Online listings for AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT have started appearing online, with the GPU showing up on Amazon and another Swiss retailer. According to VideoCardz, XFX put up two versions of the 9060 XT — a dual-fan 8 GB variant priced at $449.99 and a three-fan 16 GB version that costs $519.99. Both cards boast a boost clock of up to 3,320 MHz, slightly higher than the leaked reference specs of just 3.2 GHz. Popular hardware leaker momomo_us also shared a screenshot from a Swiss retailer showing Acer Nitro RX 9060 XT GPUs on X. The 16 GB OC variant is priced at CHF 556.70 (around $670), with the cheaper 8 GB OC costing CHF 508.30 (around $612). It might seem that the 9060 XT is significantly more expensive than the RTX 5060 Ti series. After all, Team Green’s 16 GB version has an MSRP of just $429, with the 8 GB model set at $379. But if you check where you can buy these graphics cards, you’ll find that the $400 to $500 price range is about right, especially as many AIB partners offer models that sell at much higher prices than the manufacturer has recommended. Furthermore, these could also be just placeholder pricing—after all, AMD has yet to officially launch these cards, and we do not have a whiff of the GPU’s MSRP. Still, we hope that the 9060 XT family will be competitively priced and that there’ll be many options at MSRP during launch, which is expected to be May 18. What we’re not excited about, though, is the existence of an 8 GB variant for the 9060 XT. Many experts say that 8 GB of VRAM is no longer viable for modern AAA games, with Grok AI saying it’s “like bringing a butter knife to a gunfight”. We’ve even seen this with the RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB, which loses up to 10% of performance when plugged into a PCIe 4.0 slot. We do not know how the 9060 XT 8 GB will perform yet, as AMD has not released any information about the RX 9060 XT family yet. However, we do hope that reviewers can publish their findings on the GPU’s release date, allowing us, consumers, to determine whether these GPUs are worth the asking price. iPhone Fold ‘creaseless’ display could make it a day 1 purchase — there’s just one problem iPhone Fold ‘creaseless’ display could make it a day 1 purchase — there’s just one problem When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: ConceptsiPhone / YouTube In a recent news report, it was revealed that Apple planned to completely remove the crease in the upcoming foldable iPhone. As a recent convert to foldable phones myself, I would be tempted to buy the phone due to this alone, except for one major caveat. In the past, I thought that foldable phones were a bit of a gimmick. At the time, I didn’t see the reason why you would want to spend so much money on a ******* screen when you could usually buy a tablet for less. However, as I’ve been testing out different ways to use the Galaxy Z Fold 5, I’ve found myself more appreciative of the concept and what it can be used for. However, for all that I love my foldable, there’s no denying that the crease is annoying at best, a dealbreaker at worst. There’s a multitude of reasons why the crease is annoying, so let’s look at what removing the crease will mean for Apple’s foldable phone. Why is a lack of a crease a big deal? Credit: EverythingApplePro The reality is that most of the best foldable phones have a crease as part of the screen; there’s no getting past that. While it’s existance isn’t the the end of the world, you’ll always notice it’s there. However, if Apple can remove the crease completely, it’ll change how we use the device in several ways. First and foremost, it’ll make watching media on the phone much more enjoyable. When I watch something on my Galaxy Z Fold 5, be it YouTube or Disney+, I have to have the phone at just the right angle. If I don’t, then the crease becomes much more noticeable, and changes how I watch movies on the phone. It means that I have to have the phone at a specific angle to get the best experience, which feels like it ruins the point of the ******* screen. Meanwhile, Apple’s device could theoretically be put anywhere with no issue, meaning I won’t have to shift position to get a seamless experience. Speaking of seamless, the other advantage of a creaseless screen is that it will make writing or drawing on the screen much simpler. One of the advantages of a ******* screen is that you can either use an S Pen or your finger to write and draw with much more detail. However, the crease hampers that by having your pen or finger leave the screen for a fraction of a second. This can ruin a drawing or break the flow of your writing, and it’s basically an all-around pain. Credit: Apple On that note, if Apple does manage to make the screen crease-free, then it is also the perfect time to introduce an often forgotten peripheral. Now, if you’re like me, you might have been under the impression that Apple had basically dropped the Apple Pencil from its lineup. However, they do still sell them, and a creaseless foldable phone is the perfect piece of hardware to use it on, especially if it comes with the rumored 7.8-inch inner display. However, for all these improvements, there is one major issue with the Apple foldable that could be a huge turn-off. Even with all the rumored specs, the iPhone Fold price is a concern Credit: Apple Insider In truth, there’s still a lot we don’t know about the iPhone Fold, but there’s one rumor that is really concerning. According to a recent report from a known source, Apple’s foldable phone could cost between $2,100 and $2,300 at release. Now, to be fair, it can be a bit tricky to gauge the right price for a foldable phone, as the costs run the gamut. For instance, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 cost $1,899 at release, while the OnePlus Open cost $1,699. So, at least on the surface, it looks like Apple is counting on charging a premium for its brand. With that said, the other rumors we’ve heard about the iPhone Fold might make that price more appealing, but we have to take the competition into account. For instance, there are rumors that the foldable iPhone could be as thin as 4.5-4.8mm when unfolded. That’s thinner than the Galaxy S25 Edge, which is rumored to be 5.58mm thick. However, we recently saw that Samsung could make the Galaxy Z Fold 7 an impressive 3.9 millimeters thick. Credit: Future However, the Z Fold 7 could trade battery to achieve this thickness, with the phone reportedly keeping the same 4,400 mAh battery as the prior Galaxy Z Fold 6. We don’t know what Apple’s plans are for the battery on the foldable iPhone, but Apple is reportedly looking to focus on battery life. This includes refining the display driver IC (DDI), which converts digital signals from the processor into analog signals required to control the display’s pixels. The aim is to allow the phone to be as thin as possible without sacrificing battery life, while also allowing the phone to keep cool during heavy use. iPhone Fold: Outlook At the end of the day, removing a crease from a screen alone wouldn’t be enough to warrant that kind of price. However, it’s worth taking a lot of this with a grain of salt until we get a chance to see the phone in person. Sadly, there’s been no firm indication of when Apple will release the phone. The soonest would likely September of 2026, so the iPhone Fold could launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro. Let me know what you think. Is the removal of the crease enough to make the Apple foldable a must-buy? What would you want to see in the iPhone Fold to make that price palatable? The slow death and strange afterlife of Heathrow’s ghost terminal The slow death and strange afterlife of Heathrow’s ghost terminal It is a thought that may well have occurred to you if you have landed at Heathrow at any point in the last decade. Or, more likely, have been heading to the airport on a Piccadilly or Elizabeth Line train – and have found yourself listening to the station announcements. Why does Britain’s biggest air hub not have a Terminal 1? Considering that Heathrow is the busiest airport in Europe – and the fifth busiest on the planet – this does seem a trifle unusual. 1005 Heathrow terminal map It is also nothing new. It is 10 years now since Terminal 1 disappeared from view, waving farewell to its final departure, a British Airways flight to Hannover, at 9.30pm on June 29 2015. The lights were turned off later that evening, the bulbs dimming without ceremony. In truth, while it had existed for 47 years prior to its closure – and had worn its coveted number almost from the off – Terminal 1 was only briefly the star of the Heathrow show. Heathrow Terminal 1 saw its final departure in 2015 – Heathrow Photo Library True, it was part of the grand reinvention of the airport during the 1960s – the decade in which air travel really began to morph from a high-cost pursuit for the rich into a regular form of travel for everyday holidaymakers. Heathrow had reached the milestone of one million passengers per year by as early as 1953, but as the 1960s neared their end, that figure was closer to 14 million. Expansion was essential. Terminal 1 was at the vanguard of this growth. It pushed open its doors on April 17 1968, but was quickly shoved down the headlines by more significant events – arriving, as it did, on the day that the FBI issued an arrest warrant for the suspected ********* of Martin Luther King, and 24 hours before London Bridge was sold to an American entrepreneur. The design of Terminal 1 was stark, focused mainly on getting passengers from A to B effectively – Getty Photos of the era show it as a blocky, unlovely building, redolent of the architectural trends of the time. It had been designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd, the British architect who had been pivotal to the ongoing construction efforts at Heathrow over the previous decade (while also working on the development of Harlow as a “new town”). Although Gibberd had shown a remarkable flamboyance in crafting Liverpool’s dramatic new Metropolitan Cathedral over the previous seven years (1960-1967), Terminal 1 was a pragmatic proposition, mainly concerned with getting its customers from A to B with minimal fuss. Queen Elizabeth II inaugurated Terminal 1 on April 17 1969 – Getty It had its moments, of course. It was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II on April 17 1969. And with its ribbon snipped, it was the biggest short-haul terminal in western Europe, responsible for the bulk of domestic departures and arrivals, as well as connections to the continent. Once it had come into being in 1974, British Airways used Terminal 1 as a key hub. So did British Midland International (BMI). At its peak, Terminal 1 harboured 17 airlines, greeted 13.8 million passengers a year, and hit an annual total of 123,000 flights. And yet, despite its very specific number, it was never the first. Heathrow’s original terminal was the Europa Building. It appeared as early as 1955 – again with the Queen ushering it officially into view; again, as a piece of Gibberd’s handiwork. Yet in a curious quirk, when Terminal 1 opened and the Europa Building needed to be rechristened (in May 1969), it became “Terminal 2” – even though it predated its new sibling by 13 years. The departure lounge of the then-newly opened Heathrow Terminal 1 – getty Stranger still, Terminal 1 was also predated by Terminal 3. That structure, too, had emerged from the ether in a non-numbered guise, commencing operations on November 13 1961, as the “Oceanic Terminal”. As its name suggested, its purpose was to meet the growing demand for long-haul flights. Its numerical rebrand also occurred in May 1969. For a while, Terminal 1 eclipsed them both. During the 1980s, it was the departure point for the charter flights which saw British Airways make Concorde accessible to the public beyond its premium transatlantic routes – setting out to zoom above France and Spain with its “Trip around the Bay [of Biscay]” packages. And in the early 1990s, Terminal 1 enjoyed a significant upgrade with the installation of its new “Europier” – half a million square feet of fresh infrastructure, designed to facilitate the arrival of wide-body aircraft. But as the millennium dawned, so the end approached. Terminal 5 had been discussed as early as 1982, at a point when Terminal 4 was still under construction on the southern side of the airport complex (it was eventually opened by the then-Prince and Princess of Wales, on April 1 1986). Heathrow’s £4.2 billion flagship would not be ready for action until March 2008, but when it clicked into gear, it was a death knell for 1968’s poster boy. Today, Terminal 1 is used as both a baggage handling facility and a training centre – Heathrow Photo Library Terminal 5 was not a direct replacement for Terminal 1, but its expensive advent made it the main focus of British Airways’ operations. Further BA flights were sucked away into Terminal 2, which enjoyed its own £2.3 billion refurbishment between 2009 and 2014. By the time the curtains were drawn on Terminal 1 in 2015, only four airlines were still visible up on its departures boards: BA, Icelandair, El Al and the Brazilian carrier TAM. Ultimately, it was Terminal 2 – that original Europa Building, which had had its thunder stolen in 1969 – which delivered the coup de grace. Out of date and out of time, Terminal 1’s closure was largely driven by the modernisation of its neighbour. A decade later, it lives on as an unheralded appendix; much of the baggage handling for Terminal 2 is done through the wall next door. The building is also maintained as a training centre, with the London Fire Brigade, the Ambulance Service and the Met Police using it as a venue for drills and emergency tests. This, at least, ensures that Gibberd’s blocky building has an immediate future – a ghost by the runway; a weird gap on the Piccadilly Line route map. Kerr’s Chelsea prove ‘Invincibles’ without Aussie star Kerr’s Chelsea prove ‘Invincibles’ without Aussie star Sam Kerr’s Chelsea have joined the band of “Invincibles” in English soccer after completing their triumphant Women’s Super League season unbeaten – even without the services of their superstar striker. At the end of a week in which Kerr and partner Kirstie Mewis announced the birth of their first child, the injured Matildas captain was absent from the club’s celebratory final league match of the season on Saturday as they capped their historic campaign with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Without talismanic striker Kerr, unable to play a single minute of their campaign while battling back from an ACL injury, Chelsea’s achievement, under manager Sonia Bompastor, of completing the season without a defeat in 22 matches was an extraordinary, unprecedented one. In her first season as Chelsea coach, Frenchwoman Bompastor said: “It’s a really great achievement. “Every game was tough, even though for some people that is difficult to believe. But even today we only find the goal in the last minute to win.” Meanwhile across London, Arsenal, with their three Matildas Caitlin Foord, Steph Catley and unused sub Kyra Cooney-Cross, were able to enjoy a thrilling 4-3 win over Manchester United to seal second place in the standings on 48 points, 12 behind Chelsea and four clear of United (44). In front of 46,603 fans at Emirates Stadium, goals from Chloe Kelly, Mariona Caldentey, Frida Maanum and Kim Little were enough for Arsenal, who had to endure a late fightback as United’s Elisabeth Terland and Maya Le Tissier scored in the 70th and 76th minutes. Foord won a 50th minute penalty for the Gunners after being brought down by Grace Clinton, with Caldentey converting. The Matildas’ trio next have a chance to finish their season with victory in the Women’s Champions League final against Barcelona on May 24 in Lisbon. Manchester City, without the injured Mary Fowler, beat relegated Crystal Palace 5-2 to finish fourth on 43 points, while 38-year-old *********** Dario Vidosic could be proud of his debut season managing Brighton as they finished fifth on 28, despite a last-day 3-1 loss at Aston Villa. Shocked that Skype lost the battle against Zoom? I knew it was doomed all the way back in 2011, and here’s why Shocked that Skype lost the battle against Zoom? I knew it was doomed all the way back in 2011, and here’s why Well, there goes Skype. Bye-bye, you garbage piece of software. I’m surprised you managed to hang around for as long as you did, frankly. Okay, I’m being a bit mean here; the impact of Skype on the global tech ecosystem shouldn’t be downplayed, as it effectively brought video communication to the mainstream – something that previously was the domain of corporate execs with money to burn on expensive early video-conferencing solutions. For a wonderful, all-too-brief ******* in the early 2010s, Skype was everywhere: a way to chat face-to-face with distant relatives or schoolmates who were just beyond the reach of an after-class bike ride. But I can’t pretend Skype was all sunshine and rainbows, even before the pandemic lockdowns and the rise of its chief competitor, Zoom. I remember sitting for ages waiting for a call to connect, frequent audio dropouts, and sometimes struggling to log in at all. Sure, internet connections are faster and more consistent now than they were when Skype was first conceived back in 2003, but that’s not an all-encompassing excuse for the app’s many failings. You may like The Microsoft problem See, Skype’s greatest victory was also a sword of Damocles hanging over its head: its 2011 purchase by Microsoft. A multi-billion dollar deal that positioned Skype to replace Windows Live Messenger (formerly known as the ever-iconic MSN), the purchase proved to be an immediate boon for Skype, as it was widely inserted into Windows devices over the following years, thus reaching a massive global audience. Unfortunately, this deal also meant that Skype was owned by Microsoft, which is rarely a safe position to be in. Remember Zune? Yeah, me neither. The list of products and services killed off by Microsoft over the years is long and storied, and many – including myself – saw the writing on the wall long before serious external competition arrived on the scene. Aside from a recent cameo role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Microsoft’s attempt to beat the iPod was a colossal failure. (Image credit: Marvel Studios) A key issue was Microsoft’s long-running and ill-placed desire to make Teams work. I’ll be honest: as someone who was, in a previous and much worse place of employment, forced to use Microsoft Teams, I can say with conviction that it sucks. Rigid settings, feature bloat, and an inexplicable ravenous hunger for RAM make it a frequently painful piece of software to use, especially on an outdated work PC. But Microsoft wanted – and still wants – it to be a Thing People Want To Use, which ultimately led to Skype taking a back seat as its features were gradually cannibalized to improve Teams. In fact, now that Skype has officially been taken out back with a shotgun, Microsoft is actively encouraging users to port their accounts over to Teams. And what did Skype get in return? A drip-feed of features that nobody asked for, most of which did little to improve the core video-calling functionality. The interface became more cluttered, frequent UI redesigns left users confused, and yet there was a paradoxical feeling of stagnation; meanwhile, the meteoric rise of social-media-driven video calling across platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp offered a far more streamlined and pleasant user experience. Impacts of the pandemic Zoom has been around since 2011 (ironically, the same year Microsoft acquired Skype) but you’d be forgiven for thinking that it just popped into existence at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. When we were collectively displaced from our offices and had to construct impromptu workspaces inside our homes, video conferencing became an everyday necessity – and as we all know, this was where the cracks in Skype’s facade really started to show. Zoom just works – here’s TechRadar’s own Lance Ulanoff and Jacob Krol proving it. (Image credit: Jacob Krol/Future) Technical debt is never an easy hurdle to overcome, and Skype’s aging software architecture – while cutting-edge back in 2003 – gradually became a weight chained around its ankle. With Teams at the forefront, investing in updating Skype never seemed like a priority for Microsoft. The app didn’t even change over to a centralized system from its outdated peer-to-peer networking until more than half a decade after Microsoft bought it. One of the worst blunders was Microsoft’s insistence on keeping it partially anchored to actual phone numbers (with a dial pad feature, no less) in an era when interlinked accounts are king and phones are more than just phones. It was no doubt a move intended to retain the crop of older users who were unaware of the alternatives, but the 100-user call capacity and streamlined interface of Zoom made it an easy choice for professionals who needed to keep their careers afloat while the world screeched to a halt outside. Long live Zoom It’s certainly not a universal truth that Microsoft ruins everything it touches – the Surface tablet line is finally good now! – but the tech giant has something of a reputation for enshittification. I’ve been following the gradual decay of Windows for years now, and looking at how Microsoft treats its most widely known product makes understanding the fall of Skype very easy. Microsoft has finally achieved some success with its Surface tablets, but I’m quietly surprised the brand has lasted this long. (Image credit: Microsoft) I’ve settled into a belief that Microsoft isn’t able to just let things be what they are. Everything had to be more! More features, more information, more settings, more AI! Forget what consumers actually want; the line must go up, the goalposts must keep moving, everything must be constantly changing and innovating or it’s worthless. Once you start to see Microsoft as a tech company incapable of sitting still, its successes and failures all start to make a lot more sense. What people needed for the remote working shift during the pandemic was an effective, straightforward video conferencing tool. They didn’t find that in Skype, which had already become a bloated shell of its former self after years of ‘innovation’ at the hands of Microsoft. So I say this now, to the creators of Zoom: if it ain’t broke… You might also like… Source link #Shocked #Skype #lost #battle #Zoom #knew #doomed #heres Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Alabama ex-officer insists he had ‘stand your ground’ right when he shot an armed ****** man Alabama ex-officer insists he had ‘stand your ground’ right when he shot an armed ****** man MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A former Alabama police officer who shot an armed ****** man is trying to win back his claim to self-defense before his upcoming ******* trial, and appealed a judge’s pretrial decision as a “gross abuse of discretion.” The appeal hinges on Alabama’s “ stand your ground ” law, which grants immunity from prosecution to anyone who uses deadly force as long as they reasonably believe they’re in danger and are somewhere they’re rightfully allowed to be. Mac Marquette, 25, is charged with ******* in the fatal shooting of Steve Perkins shortly before 2 a.m. in September 2023. Marquette and two other officers were accompanying a tow-truck driver to repossess Perkins’ pickup truck at his home in Decatur. When Perkins emerged from his house with a gun, Marquette fired 18 bullets less than two seconds after identifying himself as law enforcement, according to body camera footage. Court documents filed on Thursday said the judge erroneously ruled against Marquette based on his assessment that Marquette didn’t sufficiently prove he had a right to be on Perkins’ property. Alabama allows judges to determine if someone acted in self defense before a case goes to trial. The judge said Alabama law requires a court order for law enforcement to be involved in a vehicle repossession — which the officers didn’t have. Marquette’s lawyers say the judge should have given more weight to the fact that Perkins pointed his gun at the officer before he was shot. They say Marquette reasonably felt that running away from Perkins would’ve put him in more danger than standing his ground. The defense also says the officers had a legitimate reason to be there, based on the “custom, pattern, and practice of the Decatur Police Department” and because their supervisor authorized it. Both officers who were with Marquette testified they weren’t there to assist in the repossession, but were instead there to “keep the peace” and to “investigate” Perkins for pulling a gun on the tow-truck driver in an earlier repossession attempt. The state agent who investigated Perkins’ death testified in March that the way that the officers set up wasn’t standard for either of those tasks, but also said that Marquette had a reason to fear for his life. All parties in the case are prohibited from speaking to the media. The hearing comes on the heels of two years of intense protest about Perkins’ death in the northern Alabama city of approximately 60,000 people. A ****** man experiencing a mental health crisis died in Decatur Police Department custody in April. Body camera footage showing police officers punching and tasing him repeatedly reignited debate over police misconduct in the area. Marquette’s attorneys requested a postponement of the trial originally set for June, and a chance to present oral arguments in front of the Alabama Criminal Court of Appeals. ___ Riddle is a corps member for The Associated Press/Report for America Statehouse News Initiative. Credit: Nintendo Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza could only have been made on Nintendo Switch 2, according to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa. During a recent investor Q&A (translated via DeepL), Furukawa was asked how much of a technical jump there was between the Switch 2 and its predecessor. In response, he said that “higher hardware processing performance has become necessary for software developers to realize one of Nintendo’s most important goals: proposing new ways to play.” With that in mind, Furukawa explains that Nintendo looked to boost the processing power, and he claims that without that boost, Nintendo Switch 2 launch games like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza “could not be realized.” “The Nintendo Switch 2 might not seem like much of a change on the outside.” Furukawa continues, “However, in reality, both the hardware and peripherals have been developed from scratch.” Furukawa doesn’t explain why those two games couldn’t work on Switch, but if I had to guess, it would be because of Mario Kart World’s extremely open approach to its world, and Donkey Kong Bananza’s almost fully destructive environments. Couple that with the various third-party titles like Elden Ring and Hogwarts Legacy that are making their way to the platform, and it’s clear that the Switch 2 is making a hardware step-up – even if that’s not immediately obvious from its Switch 1-style design. Government faces growing crisis as cattle die due to unexpected cause — here’s what’s happening Government faces growing crisis as cattle die due to unexpected cause — here’s what’s happening A rising number of stray cattle in Delhi are consuming plastic waste, triggering a growing health crisis impacting traffic, sanitation, and even political leadership. What’s happening? As The New Indian Express reported, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was delayed on her way to the state assembly after her convoy was blocked by cows — many chewing on plastic waste. As Delhi has rapidly expanded, pastures and grazing lands that once supported livestock have disappeared. Many cattle, once essential to rural households, are now abandoned when they stop producing milk or become too expensive to care for. With limited access to food, cattle have turned to roaming the streets, foraging through piles of roadside waste — much of it plastic, despite bans on single-use plastics in place. According to local veterinarians, cow shelters known as gaushalas are increasingly overwhelmed and under-resourced. Combined with strict slaughter and cattle trading laws in the majority Hindu country, the situation is worsening. Why is the plastic crisis among cattle concerning? The issue has become so widespread that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and other agencies have struggled for years to contain it. In the meantime, residents face daily hazards — from aggressive bulls in marketplaces to severe traffic jams during peak hours. Stray cows have been found with pounds of plastic in their stomachs, including bags, wrappers, and bottle caps, which can lead to internal blockages, chronic pain, and even death. As recently reported, plastic buildups in cattle’s stomachs can lead to a decline in milk yield and quality and introduce toxic elements. These microplastics can be passed from animals to people, with potential risks such as inflammation, endocrine disruption, and gastrointestinal issues. Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? Plastic pollution is a global threat, but in urban centers like Delhi, it’s turning into a public health issue. When cattle eat plastic, their suffering spills over into the broader community, contaminating food markets, clogging roads, and straining already limited municipal resources. Ultimately, it is delaying progress toward a cleaner, safer future for all. What’s being done to address the plastic crisis in cattle? Policy proposals include stronger enforcement of plastic bans and better support for urban cattle shelters. Local leaders are also calling for more coordination between agencies. Broader plastic solutions are emerging, but slowly. Stories like this one show the scale of the problem with plastics in our soil, while others prove that through new methods, real change is possible if we focus on solving the problem with enough innovation and emerging technologies. In the meantime, individual action matters. Reducing single-use plastics at home is one of the easiest and most powerful ways to help. Helpful guides around using less plastic can offer simple steps to keep waste out of landfills — and out of the stomachs of vulnerable animals and food sources. Challenge Cup semi-final: Hull KR 36-12 Catalans Dragons Challenge Cup semi-final: Hull KR 36-12 Catalans Dragons Hull KR have gone 40 years without a major trophy and lifted their only Challenge Cup even further back, in 1980. But hopes are sky high in Humberside, with Rovers sitting top of Super League and now in their ninth Challenge Cup final after an emphatic second-half display. KR showed first as both sides ignored the unusually high spring temperatures and went full-tilt in a breathless first half. Batchelor chased down Lewis’ kick through to score after Guillermo Aispuro-Bichet failed to punch the ball out of the in-goal area, and then added a hotly-debated second try after a lengthy video review. Matthieu Laguerre appeared to ground the ball at the same time as the second-rower, but video referee Ben Thaler could not overrule Chris Kendall’s onfield decision to award the try. Dragons offered little in attack in the opening 15 minutes but then exploded into life, as Smith cut back inside to split open the Rovers defence and cross near the posts. And when Keary chased down a chip ahead soon after, Thaler did this time overrule Kendall – who had called offside – as the Dragons pinched the lead. Catalans went close to extending that lead moments later, but Julian Bousquet’s rash flicked offload just metres from the line instead found a Rovers hand. But the match turned again before half-time as Jai Whitbread’s brilliant offload in the tackle sent Lewis flying over to restore the Hull KR advantage. Lewis booted a penalty as Rovers piled on the pressure after the restart and then cracked the French side when Broadbent spotted a gap and launched a scorching diagonal run through it to the posts. Jez Litten’s thrilling run from his own half sparked a breathless move which fell just short, but KR killed the game with 10 minutes left as Catalans visibly wilted. Kelepi Tanginoa was sent clear by Lewis’ cut-out pass and fed Joe Burgess, whose pass inside gave Broadbent a clear run to the line before Burgess ran in at the left corner for try number six. James Wan is Cool But the OG Horror Movie Legend Who Wanted to Direct It Would’ve Been a Better Choice James Wan is Cool But the OG Horror Movie Legend Who Wanted to Direct It Would’ve Been a Better Choice A live-action Dead Space movie based on the video game series of the same name is reportedly in the works. James Wan, the mastermind behind popular horror films like The Conjuring, Insidious, and Malignant, is helming the project. James Wan is no stranger to horror, so there’s no doubt that he’ll do justice to the terrifying and grotesque atmosphere of Dead Space. But there is someone who could’ve been a better choice for directing the live-action Dead Space movie, and guess what? He’s a massive fan of the series and has played the remake, too. Horror legend John Carpenter expressed his desire to direct a Dead Space movie, but he’s not the one doing it John Carpenter has never been shy about his love for Dead Space. Over a decade ago, he expressed his desire to direct a live-action adaptation of it on X. But in an interview with Variety, after being asked about potentially directing a Dead Space movie, Carpenter let it slip that a Dead Space movie is indeed in the works, but another director is doing it. I’m a big video game fan, so I played all the [Dead Space] games. I was down looking at the new digital cameras, the RED, and happened to mention to them that I would love to do a “Dead Space” film. That just went around, and everybody said, “Oh, when are you gonna do it?” I’m not gonna do it. I think they already have another director involved. And they haven’t asked me to do it. So until someone asks me, I wouldn’t do it. But there’s a new version of the “Dead Space” video game coming out in January, and I’m there. It’s infuriating to know that no one asked Carpenter to do it, considering how much of an influence The Thing was on Dead Space and how much of an absolute no-brainer move it would’ve been. But, the good news is that he did play the remake of the first Dead Space and expressed his enjoyment on X after it was initially released two years ago. E.A.’s refurbished DEAD SPACE is exciting and scary. Great game! — John Carpenter (@TheHorrorMaster) January 30, 2023 One can only hope that Carpenter will be involved with the project in some capacity. While James Wan is rumored to be directing the Dead Space movie, as reported by leaker MyTimeToShineHello, new reports have emerged indicating that his adaptation of the popular sci-fi horror series may not be live-action after all. James Wan’s Dead Space movie is apparently animated and not live-action The Dead Space movie is now animated | Image Credit: Electronic Arts According to Fiction Horizon, James Wan’s Dead Space movie is now rumored to be reworked into an animated feature instead. The article further explains that the rumors come from Daniel Richtman’s paid newsletter, but no official confirmation has been received yet. If the rumors are true, then this would mark the third animated movie in the franchise, as Dead Space: Downfall (2008) and Dead Space: Aftermath (2011) already exist. If you didn’t know, James Wan did work on a trailer for the first Dead Space game back in 2008, so his directing an animated adaptation of the franchise wouldn’t be his first rodeo with the series. It’s still unclear if the Dead Space movie will be an adaptation of the first game or its own thing entirely, like Kojima’s Death Stranding movie. Although the gaming side of Dead Space is seemingly dead, the movie side seems to be heating up. So, what do you think about James Wan potentially directing an animated adaptation of Dead Space? Do you think he’s the right choice, or would you just like John Carpenter to direct a live-action adaptation? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below. As per Niamh Brodie-Machura, Co-Chief Investment Officer at Fidelity International, the effect of tariffs is expected to shift lower as and when the deals are made, supply chains adapt, and there is some adjustment in consumption patterns with lower tariffed goods witnessing relatively increased demand. However, there continues to be a ******* of increased volatility, and investors who plan to add risk should be careful. The environment is more of an opportunity to better position portfolios for resilience amidst uncertainty. Contrary to expectations, BlackRock, in its release dated April 23, highlighted that international equities outperformed the US equities by 11% in 2025. The US growth stocks fell by 10%, and US value stocks increased by 2%. This transition demonstrates a significant market rotation throughout geography and style as value stocks continue to gain favor over growth stocks. Within the US market, value equities, mainly in defensive sectors such as healthcare, have been performing well, says the asset manager. BlackRock also added that the narrowing of the earnings gap and the industry’s attractive characteristics, like innovation and the growth of aging populations, have been fueling the performance. Notably, active management strategies are advantageous when it comes to navigating the fluctuating markets. READ ALSO: 7 Best Stocks to Buy For Long-Term and 8 Cheap Jim Cramer Stocks to Invest In. BlackRock believes that the US large-cap value equities are the only major US index having positive returns YTD through March 31.
