Steam is becoming a place to search daily for free games. Whether it's fully-fledged freebies or demos, there's always something to check out on the platform. Even if Steam Decks are hard to come by right now due to worldwide memory shortages, a lot of these projects work just fine on a traditional PC. View the full article
After deciding not to compete with Steam, it seems Amazon doesn't even want to compete with other cloud services, continuing the trend of downsizing its gaming departments more and more. This time around, it's cutting down its Luna cloud service by disallowing players from playing games on their own third-party platforms and not guaranteeing their saves will carry over. As PC Gamer writes, Amazon will bar you from playing games via the "Bring Your Own Library" function, which previously allowed players to stream titles through Luna no matter where they bought them. You'll still be able to use the service as such by June 10, which is when all your third-party purchases will be rendered unusable on Luna. You'll get to keep the games on those platforms and be able to play them elsewhere, as well as rent some of them via Luna's pricier Premium tier, so the games aren't exactly going away from the platform. Amazon Luna is, like Xbox Cloud Gaming, a cloud-based service that lets you stream games rather than rendering them natively. Image via Amazon From that fact, it is only logical that we conclude that Amazon wants you to upgrade to a higher tier and stream these games via Luna itself, rather than buying them on the side and using the standard option (included with Amazon Prime) to enjoy games bought on other storefronts. To add to that, Amazon also doesn't guarantee that save files, which will be downloadable for 90 days after June 10, will work on machines and services outside of Luna itself. So if you were playing through something and wanted to see it completed, you've got about two months or so left before Luna presses the kill switch on third-party stores. Ubisoft+ and Jackbox Games will also no longer be sold via Luna, which is par for the course with this decision. Anyhow, other cloud services keep expanding and are at least trying to make themselves viable in this day and age, where everyone owns a good machine, whether that's a console or a PC. Xbox's Cloud Gaming and Nvidia's GeForce Now remain solid options, but I'll tell you what I tell everyone when it comes to this topic: just save up, get your own PC, and never rely on another's whim or will. The cloud is just another person's PC, so keep that in mind. A new Battlefield 6 update is on the horizon, and it looks to be introducing some significant changes to the game, but some fans in the community aren't happy with what EA has planned. Game Update 1.2.3.0 is planned for Tuesday, April 14, and its patch notes are quite extensive. New Content Arrives: Operation Augur arrives alongside the LTV, the Ripper 14”, and a new Battle Pass Bonus Path.Progression Feels More Rewarding: Weapon XP and Vehicle XP are now earned through active use alongside kills and assists, XP rates have been increased slightly across Multiplayer, and Battle Royale and Gauntlet progression now places more weight on time spent in a match.Weapons and Gadgets Receive a Broad Polish Pass: Defibrillators and the AJ-03 COAG Med Pen have been updated, while attachments, animations, unlock presentation, and challenge tracking have all seen further improvements. The new LTV vehicle in Battlefield 6. Image via EA You now earn weapon and vehicle XP for just using specific items. Previously, a large chunk of the XP you gained was purely through kills and assists. This made the time spent searching for enemies in a match, repairing vehicles, or helping out teammates essentially worthless in terms of gaining XP. Now, you'll earn more XP just by having a weapon equipped or driving a vehicle during a match. As for Defibrillators, the developers outlined the current overpowered nature of reviving teammates in Battlefield 6 and felt a change was needed. Now, just like in older Battlefield titles, the Defibrillator has a set amount of uses and must be charged up before you can revive another teammate. The charges also determine the health given to a revived teammate, with teammates being fully healed when the Defibrillator is at 100%. While these changes do solve a lot of problems with the current state of Battlefield 6, the game has seemingly left a sour taste in many fans' mouths. The primary reactions to the 1.2.3.0 patch notes are mostly negative, with the community calling out the developers for a lack of content since launch. The 1.2.3.0 update is adding some new content, including the LTV vehicle, the Ripper 14" weapon, and Operation Augur, but fans on social media aren't pleased with what they're receiving. One player seems to be over Battlefield altogether, saying, "This content after such a successful launch honestly makes me never want to be part of this franchise ever again," with others in the community saying it's "too little, too late" for Battlefield 6. The time since launch has been full of bugs, unsatisfying content, and updates that are few and far between. While the 1.2.3.0 looks to be a step in the right direction, Battlefield 6 seemingly has a long road ahead to get back in the community's good graces. Free-to-play title Crystallfall has landed in a soup at launch, which largely has to do with the servers and their performance. While the graphics settings are rather limited, I endured plenty of stutters and performance issues. I believe that a part of those problems was due to the conditions of the servers, but I also had to make some changes to the graphics and UI to smoothen the things out. Best Crystalfall graphics settings Before I deep dive into the settings, here's my current setup. AMD Ryzen 5600G16 GB of DDR5 RAMNVIDIA RTX 3060 12 GB Here are the current graphics settings that I am using. Once again, there are not many options to tweak. Display mode: Fullscreen/Borderless WindowResolution: 1920x1080Vsync: OffTarget Frame Rate: 60 FPSAnti-Aliasing: FXAA While most of the settings in UI are on default, I changed the following two components. Damage Numbers: OffHealing Numbers: Off Here's why I have made these changes. Screenshot by Destructoid VSync: Like all new launches, I have gone with VSync turned off. I haven't found much use for it in Crystallfall anyway, and disabling it solved the stutters that I was encountering. FPS: While having more FPS is better, it doesn't make sense if you encounter lag in the process. Hence, I went with a smooth 60 FPS cap, which is more than enough to enjoy the gameplay. Having Damage Numbers and Healing Numbers seems to cause problems when you encounter large herds on the map. Turning them off won't matter much since you still have the enemies' health bars active. I firmly believe that much of the graphical issues stems from lags caused by server issues. Hopefully, things will have settled by now, which will allow you to have a smoother performance. The Level-5 Craftsmanship livestream and a new trailer on April 10, 2026 provided new information on the highly-anticipated Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, revealing new features, story details, voice cast members, and perhaps most interestingly, that it will be a simultaneous worldwide release not just on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 but on PlayStation 5 and Steam. Between 2007 and 2013, the Professor Layton series released six mainline games and an anime movie, chronicling the adventures of Professor Hershel Layton and his assistant Luke Triton as they solved mysteries. After an attempt at a revival with a different cast in Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy in 2017 failed, sending the series into another hiatus, fans were very excited to see the good professor back when Professor Layton and the New World of Steam was announced in a 2023 Nintendo Direct. Amazon Luna notified subscribers that, effective April 10, the streaming service would no longer allow users to purchase individual games or third-party subscriptions on an à la carte basis. However, this does not mean that Amazon Luna is being discontinued altogether, as Amazon is instead doubling down on GameNight and other experiences for users to peruse. View the full article
Seeing developers leave a job they love always hurts, and yet I didn't expect the latest Lost Ark roadmap video to hit me quite this hard. Recent restructuring at Amazon Games saw two of the faces of the MMORPG, community manager Roxanne Sabo and producer Henry Stelter, both depart the company. That left just one member of its regular front-of-camera crew behind, franchise lead Matt Huston, to deliver what he says will be the last video roadmap as the team switches to text articles for the foreseeable future. Every now and then, a game comes out of nowhere and surprises us all with its ambitions. And while they unfortunately often don't live up to expectations, there are always chances that they'll become the next best thing, and I have a strong feeling The Pines could just do that. Announced seemingly at random, The Pines is a purported psychological horror RPG set in the eponymous town, where the protagonist is sent due to dealing with certain "issues" of his own. Over there, he meets various characters, from tinfoil hat-wearing conspiracy theorists to outright supernatural creatures, all the while uncovering and unraveling the mystery of The Pines, itself very reminiscent of Twin Peaks. [Hidden Content] The game promises strong RPG elements, from dialogue choices to strong consequences for every decision, all the while placing you in a world that is way darker and stranger than it seems. Sound familiar? Well, Alan Wake sorta kinda did a similar thing, but The Pines seems different enough that it could be classified as a "Wake-type game." I mean, you follow a dude in third person through dank forests while there is a mystery around him that "they" don't want to tell him of, forcing him to experience the strange on his own, for better or worse. What I was particularly struck by were the graphics. Sure, in this day and age you can easily find a game that looks rather spectacular considering Unreal Engine 5 and its capabilities, but the cutscenes are just so high-quality that I feel a gripping story just has to follow suit. The gameplay and combat seem a bit stiffer than I would like, but I'm willing to overlook that for an in-development project that is this ambitious. So long as the mystery is intriguing enough, I'm good, and from what I could gather, it very well could be. I also got reminded of an old, small game called The Vanishing of Ethan Carter that I played as a kid. I don't remember it too much, but the vibes of a forested area, a strong mystery where the protagonist has no idea what's going on, and an overall sense of a looming presence all scratch the same itch as that indie did way back when. There's potentially a huge game here, so long as the devs get it right. And players over on social media are just as interested as I am, even if a bit skeptical of the ambition. Of course, comparisons to Alan Wake 2 dominate discussions, as that's simply unavoidable, but that is also not a bad thing per se. "[This] game looks like it's heavily inspired by games I already love, so happy to check out more of this in the future," one user said in a Reddit thread. "I love this vibe. I'm excited," said another. It's being developed by Studio Abattoir, seemingly first-time developers, so it could end up being a Clair Obscur situation, though that one did have a lot of veterans working on it. Either way, I'm excited, and I have a feeling many of you will be, too. The post The Pines could be the Alan Wake-type game we’ve been waiting for appeared first on Destructoid. View the full article

Co-op horror games have been going through a revolution ever since Lethal Company proved that small-scale projects can be worldwide hits so long as they maintain a strong meme factor, which eventually got so popular that it is now collectively referred to as "friendslop." And while the term is generally overapplied, it certainly is a great way to describe certain games, such as Titan Hunters, an upcoming co-op tower defense title where you and up to three friends defend your castle against attacking titans (yes, that was on purpose). You man cannons, play around with the game's physics, and fend off these skinless giants whose sole mission in life is to eat you alive. Both in design and in premise, the game is blatantly inspired by Attack on Titan, even too inspired, I'd say, because the titans themselves do not merely share their names with the manga's characters. No, they literally look the same, outside of a few creative differences such as overexaggerated faces and eyeballs that lean more into comedy than the manga does. [Hidden Content] Of course, there are also other, more original titans, such as one ginormous chicken with glowing eyes, so it's not a total copy through and through, but man, if it isn't barely avoiding copyright claims. And the game is so self-aware that in its promotional screenshots, there's a player called "Slopaladin," actively playing into the inevitable "friendslop" label that is going to be applied to the game. Despite all this, the game genuinely does look fun, as Attack on Titan and its whole premise are so incredibly good that it's about damn time we got a game that is even remotely based on it. The game is yet to receive an actual release date, and I wouldn't be surprised if it got delayed even further by some sort of lawsuit or complaint issued by Attack on Titan creator Hajime Isayama, that is, if he's done drinking the tears of his fans who still cry about both the manga and the anime's endings. I, for one, never saw the ending as I stopped at the last film, so my rage is as of yet contained, though I have to say that the anime fell off a cliff after the first part of season three. Anyhow, I'm getting sidetracked. Titan Hunters' release is TBD, but we'll keep you posted if anything of note happens.
