The shooter space is in a weird place right now. As studios and publishers have scrambled to cash in on the live-service *****, we've been inundated with various multiplayer games that have had soaring highs and devastating lows. As players, it's never been easier to sort the wheat from the chaff, but for developers, cutting through the noise has become a major headache. When Nomion Games co-head Dmitri Ogorodnikov split from Escape From Tarkov maker Battlestate Games to head up the new studio, he knew that its first game, Rush is Real, couldn't follow in the steps of commercial failures like Concord and Highguard. Speaking to PCGamesN, Ogorodnikov explains that Nomion's in-the-works debut cannot hit the same stumbling blocks. Read the rest of the story... View the full article
It always bugged me that you couldn't save the scientists in Half-Life. You'd be trundling through some grey corridor in the bowels of ****** Mesa, with one or two or maybe even three lab coat wearing boffins behind you, when they'd suddenly stop for no obvious reason, announcing: "This is as far as I go!" Just a day after Pearl Abyss’ announcement of the various improvements it said were coming soon to Crimson Desert, we have a new patch that adds many of them already — and even a few changes fans hadn't expected. The highlights of the patch, as detailed on the Crimson Desert website, are a new weapons display option, which means you can hide weapons from the back of your character (so long, shield!), the addition of skills for the secondary playable characters, which makes them more viable to play, and various user interface improvements. But there’s a lot in the update (patch notes below) that Pearl Abyss hadn’t mentioned. For example, Pearl Abyss has improved the usability of the Greymane camp (I won’t say how exactly, to avoid spoilers), made the Abyss puzzles easier by adding more hints and making it easier to recognize when certain gimmicks are available to be attached by using Force Palm, and gave Kliff an entirely new ability called Focused Aerial Roll. For me, the highlight of the patch is the improvements to Damiane and Oongka, who I’ve pretty much ignored up to this point because of their limited functionality. Now they have pretty much the same abilities as Kliff, so you’ll be able to use them to complete much of the open-world gameplay. The main story still revolves around Kliff and you’ll need to use him for the majority of it, but clearly Damiane and Oongka are more viable now. The patch also improves fast travel so it can be used while mounted, falling, swimming, or climbing walls, which means you can pretty much fast travel at any non combat point now. And there are some welcome quality of life improvements, too, such as icons for treasure chests already obtained now being displayed differently, visited and unvisited caves are now displayed with different icons, and restored and unrestored Abyss locations are now displayed with different icons. So, plenty to dig into with this latest patch, while there are still many improvements to come, as outlined this week. We can expect new pets and mounts, new outfits, and significant changes to storage, ‘re-blockading,’ and new difficulty options, too. As I’ve said before, the pace of these game-changing updates is so quick, you do wonder how Pearl Abyss is managing it. Crimson Desert has sold 4 million copies so far, making it a big hit for the developer, and it’s showing remarkable staying power in terms of Steam concurrents. So players are sticking with it, pumping hundreds of hours into its open world, and it continues to sell. A big part of that success is down to the updates released over the last few weeks, which have all have made significant improvements, helping to shift the mixed reception at launch. Clearly, there are even more to come. Crimson Desert update 1.03.00 patch notes: Content Improved the usability of the Greymane camp.Fixed issues that occurred when completing certain requests while being in the 'wanted' status.Improved standard dialogue scenes without letterboxing so that fast-forwarding is now available.Added a Fast Forward Speed option under Other > Language & Gameplay, allowing players to adjust fast-forward speed.Improved Abyss Nexuses so that they are easier to discover.Improved convenience for certain Abyss puzzles.Improved clarity so that it is easier to recognize when certain gimmicks are available to be attached by using 'Force Palm'.Improved lanterns and 'Blinding Flash' so that they provide more hints.Improved the entrance path to the Spire of Soaring.Improved terrain in certain Abyss locations.Changed bank functionality while being in the 'wanted' status so that bank services remain available, but depositing gold bars and updating investment funds are no longer possible.Fixed an issue where requests could not be completed at a certain step when destroying the totems after completing Chapter 9, 'Sanctum of Mortification'.Fixed an issue where certain requests could not be completed if related quest items were obtained before the request was activated.Fixed an issue where Gunter (Equipment vendor), Harry (Blacksmith), Bronton (Stablekeep), and Lola (Seamstress) in Pailune would be replaced by different NPCs after a certain quest.Added 3 new base music tracks across the continent of Pywel during combat (The Crimson Desert and certain other regions excluded) during [Patch 1.01.00].Added 1 new loading screen music track. If you’ve ever felt like your Xbox achievement history was a messy drawer you couldn’t organize, Microsoft is finally handing you a label maker. A new wave of updates to the Xbox Achievements system is now rolling out to select Xbox Insiders, with a wider release coming to all players later. The changes are modest in scope but meaningful in impact — and for anyone who takes their gaming profile seriously, there’s a lot to like here. A fresh coat of paint on your unlocks The most immediately noticeable change is visual. Achievement notifications have been redesigned with new icons and updated animations that trigger when you unlock both standard and rare achievements. Better yet, the notification now adapts to your custom accent color, making each unlock feel a little more yours rather than a generic pop-up you dismiss without thinking. It’s a small touch, but it’s the kind of polish that makes a system feel alive rather than neglected. Hide games you’d rather forget This one has been on the Xbox Insider wishlist for a long time. Later this month, players will be able to hide individual games from their achievement history on their profile. Had a rough run with a game you barely played? Want a cleaner, more curated showcase? Now you can make that call. One important note: hiding a game is purely cosmetic. It won’t strip you of any Gamerscore, and your activity will still be tracked across Xbox. Think of it as tidying your shelf — the games are still there, just not on display. Your 100% completions finally get their moment Fully completing a game is no small feat, and Xbox is now making sure that effort doesn’t get buried. Titles where you’ve earned every last point of available Gamerscore will now be highlighted directly in your achievements list, giving you a quick way to see your completed games at a glance. New filter options also make it easier to sort through your list — whether you want to find those completed titles or check what you’ve chosen to hide. Microsoft has noted this is just the beginning of a broader effort to better recognize completion milestones, so expect more in this space over time. The ******* picture None of these changes reinvent Xbox, but they reflect something important: Microsoft is listening to what players have been asking for. Achievements have felt stagnant for years, and even incremental improvements to how we present and celebrate our gaming history are worth getting excited about. For Xbox players across the Middle East and globally, the rollout begins with Insiders now, with full availability coming to everyone shortly after. Source: [Hidden Content] View the full article

Fortnite developer Epic Games is reportedly working on a new extraction shooter featuring Disney characters that is set to launch later this year. A Bloomberg report states the currently unnamed spinoff is expected to launch November 2026. It, as well as the other two unnamed titles, is said to be the result of a $1.5 billion investment Disney made in the gaming giant back in 2024. According to the site’s sources, the mystery extraction experience is said to be a shooting game not unlike Embark Studios’ Arc Raiders, which launched to impressive player numbers and wound up a massive success for the developer late last year. Those familiar with the Disney game say some at Epic are optimistic the project will stick the landing at launch, though internal reviews have expressed concern about unoriginal game mechanics. Disney has had plenty of its characters crossover to the main Fortnite experience in the years since its investment was announced, with two recent examples seeing Buzz Lightyear and Emperor Zurg joining its enormous roster of skins. Last month, Epic gave players the ability to create their own experiences based on Star Wars. The game has also featured numerous crossovers with the Marvel universe in the past. It’s unclear which characters from Disney’s wide catalog of IP it plans to let loose in a new extraction shooter from Epic. Further details on the two entertainment companies' continued partnership are even murkier, as Bloomberg reports the plan is to eventually see at least a second and third game materialize in the future. There’s no word on what shape each will take, as the site’s sources paint a picture of average internal reviews for game number two, while resources for game three have been reallocated to the others. Bloomberg reports Disney was “disappointed” with the game developer’s progress on the other projects, which drove the decision to shift resources around. Epic senior director of global communications Liz Markman told the site its reporting is “not reflective of the ambitions of the Disney collaboration,” adding, “We are building a new games and entertainment universe of Disney experiences.” “Epic’s timelines are aggressive and always have been,” Markman continued. “We've heavily moved developers onto projects with releases approaching, while smaller prototyping teams are working on further-off projects.” A representative for Disney also provided the site with a statement, saying that it remains “focused on our long-term collaboration with Epic which continues to have strong momentum and our work to build a transformational games and entertainment universe remains unchanged.” News of Disney’s alleged plans with Epic follow the announcement that the Fortnite maker had laid off 1,000 employees just weeks ago. A message shared by the company pointed to a “downturn in engagement” at the time, while also saying it was “spending significantly more than we're making.” A separate announcement confirmed plans to shutter its Rocket Racing, Ballistic, and Festival Battle Stage experiences in the near future. Remaining employees took to social media in the wake of the news to speak about what was next for the team. We spoke with industry analysts in the aftermath of the layoffs to learn more about what may be troubling the studio. Meanwhile, tech reporter Alex Heath shared on The Town podcast late last month that Disney was allegedly interested in acquiring Epic at some point. Michael Cripe is a freelance writer with IGN. After deciding not to compete with Steam, it seems Amazon doesn't even want to compete with other cloud services, continuing the trend of downsizing its gaming departments more and more. This time around, it's cutting down its Luna cloud service by disallowing players from playing games on their own third-party platforms and not guaranteeing their saves will carry over. As PC Gamer writes, Amazon will bar you from playing games via the "Bring Your Own Library" function, which previously allowed players to stream titles through Luna no matter where they bought them. You'll still be able to use the service as such by June 10, which is when all your third-party purchases will be rendered unusable on Luna. You'll get to keep the games on those platforms and be able to play them elsewhere, as well as rent some of them via Luna's pricier Premium tier, so the games aren't exactly going away from the platform. Amazon Luna is, like Xbox Cloud Gaming, a cloud-based service that lets you stream games rather than rendering them natively. Image via Amazon From that fact, it is only logical that we conclude that Amazon wants you to upgrade to a higher tier and stream these games via Luna itself, rather than buying them on the side and using the standard option (included with Amazon Prime) to enjoy games bought on other storefronts. To add to that, Amazon also doesn't guarantee that save files, which will be downloadable for 90 days after June 10, will work on machines and services outside of Luna itself. So if you were playing through something and wanted to see it completed, you've got about two months or so left before Luna presses the kill switch on third-party stores. Ubisoft+ and Jackbox Games will also no longer be sold via Luna, which is par for the course with this decision. Anyhow, other cloud services keep expanding and are at least trying to make themselves viable in this day and age, where everyone owns a good machine, whether that's a console or a PC. Xbox's Cloud Gaming and Nvidia's GeForce Now remain solid options, but I'll tell you what I tell everyone when it comes to this topic: just save up, get your own PC, and never rely on another's whim or will. The cloud is just another person's PC, so keep that in mind. A new Battlefield 6 update is on the horizon, and it looks to be introducing some significant changes to the game, but some fans in the community aren't happy with what EA has planned. Game Update 1.2.3.0 is planned for Tuesday, April 14, and its patch notes are quite extensive. New Content Arrives: Operation Augur arrives alongside the LTV, the Ripper 14”, and a new Battle Pass Bonus Path.Progression Feels More Rewarding: Weapon XP and Vehicle XP are now earned through active use alongside kills and assists, XP rates have been increased slightly across Multiplayer, and Battle Royale and Gauntlet progression now places more weight on time spent in a match.Weapons and Gadgets Receive a Broad Polish Pass: Defibrillators and the AJ-03 COAG Med Pen have been updated, while attachments, animations, unlock presentation, and challenge tracking have all seen further improvements. The new LTV vehicle in Battlefield 6. Image via EA You now earn weapon and vehicle XP for just using specific items. Previously, a large chunk of the XP you gained was purely through kills and assists. This made the time spent searching for enemies in a match, repairing vehicles, or helping out teammates essentially worthless in terms of gaining XP. Now, you'll earn more XP just by having a weapon equipped or driving a vehicle during a match. As for Defibrillators, the developers outlined the current overpowered nature of reviving teammates in Battlefield 6 and felt a change was needed. Now, just like in older Battlefield titles, the Defibrillator has a set amount of uses and must be charged up before you can revive another teammate. The charges also determine the health given to a revived teammate, with teammates being fully healed when the Defibrillator is at 100%. While these changes do solve a lot of problems with the current state of Battlefield 6, the game has seemingly left a sour taste in many fans' mouths. The primary reactions to the 1.2.3.0 patch notes are mostly negative, with the community calling out the developers for a lack of content since launch. The 1.2.3.0 update is adding some new content, including the LTV vehicle, the Ripper 14" weapon, and Operation Augur, but fans on social media aren't pleased with what they're receiving. One player seems to be over Battlefield altogether, saying, "This content after such a successful launch honestly makes me never want to be part of this franchise ever again," with others in the community saying it's "too little, too late" for Battlefield 6. The time since launch has been full of bugs, unsatisfying content, and updates that are few and far between. While the 1.2.3.0 looks to be a step in the right direction, Battlefield 6 seemingly has a long road ahead to get back in the community's good graces. The post Battlefield 6 makes big changes to progression and revives, but it might be too late for some fans appeared first on Destructoid. View the full article
Free-to-play title Crystallfall has landed in a soup at launch, which largely has to do with the servers and their performance. While the graphics settings are rather limited, I endured plenty of stutters and performance issues. I believe that a part of those problems was due to the conditions of the servers, but I also had to make some changes to the graphics and UI to smoothen the things out. Best Crystalfall graphics settings Before I deep dive into the settings, here's my current setup. AMD Ryzen 5600G16 GB of DDR5 RAMNVIDIA RTX 3060 12 GB Here are the current graphics settings that I am using. Once again, there are not many options to tweak. Display mode: Fullscreen/Borderless WindowResolution: 1920x1080Vsync: OffTarget Frame Rate: 60 FPSAnti-Aliasing: FXAA While most of the settings in UI are on default, I changed the following two components. Damage Numbers: OffHealing Numbers: Off Here's why I have made these changes. Screenshot by Destructoid VSync: Like all new launches, I have gone with VSync turned off. I haven't found much use for it in Crystallfall anyway, and disabling it solved the stutters that I was encountering. FPS: While having more FPS is better, it doesn't make sense if you encounter lag in the process. Hence, I went with a smooth 60 FPS cap, which is more than enough to enjoy the gameplay. Having Damage Numbers and Healing Numbers seems to cause problems when you encounter large herds on the map. Turning them off won't matter much since you still have the enemies' health bars active. I firmly believe that much of the graphical issues stems from lags caused by server issues. Hopefully, things will have settled by now, which will allow you to have a smoother performance.
