(credit: Sam Machkovech) [/url] "Basically, fast-paced interesting ADHD gameplay. Combination of Dota 2, Team Fortress 2, Overwatch, Valorant, Smite, Orcs Must ****." That's how notable Valve leaker "Gabe Follower" describes Deadlock, a Valve game that is seemingly in playtesting at the moment, for which a few screenshots have leaked out. The game has been known as "Neon Prime" and "Citadel" at prior points. It's a "Competitive third-person hero-based shooter," with six-on-six battles across a map with four "lanes." That allows for some of the "Tower defense mechanics" mentioned by Gabe Follower, along with "fast travel using floating rails, similar to Bioshock Infinite." The maps reference a "modern steampunk ********* city (little bit like Half-Life)," after "bad feedback" about a sci-fi theme pushed the development team toward fantasy. So right away, this whole argument comes with a big caveat, one that needs to be made clear immediately and up top: despite hints, rumors, speculation, and even some leaked screenshots, there's no saying for sure that Deadlock, supposedly a 6v6 competitive FPS in the vein of Overwatch, really is the next game from Valve. Similarly, we don't know what Deadlock actually plays like or is like - even if it exists. And so, this article continues based on two assumptions. First, Deadlock will be the next game from Valve. Second, it's exactly the kind of game that everything we've seen and heard about it so far would suggest, a hero-based PvP shooter akin to familiar tentpole releases from Blizzard, Riot, and Respawn. What follows are my personal concerns - or rather, disappointments - but also some hopes, if those presumptions turn out to be correct. Read the rest of the story...
