  1. One of the developers behind No Rest for the Wicked recently talked about the usefulness of early access releases, suggesting that even well-regarded titles such as Dark Souls could have benefited from this practice. Early access is becoming increasingly popular in gaming, and No Rest for the Wicked is just one of the many recent projects to use this release model. View the full article
  2. This underwater Soulslike lets you perform special moves with a sweet and salty kick. Here’s everything you need to know about Umami attacks in Another Crab’s Treasure.Another Crab’s Treasure: What are Umami AttacksUmami abilities are tied to your shell. Every shell in the game comes with its own Umami ability that can either act as a defense ******* or a more offensive ability. You’ll unlock Umami after you naturally reach a certain point in the game so don’t worry about missing them. These Umami abilities can have interesting effects in battle. Take Shellshock for example, this Umami ******* lets you electrify your shell so that enemies take damage when striking it. Or Fizzle, which pushes enemies away with pressurized air. These abilities can make combat a little less stressful, especially if you’re dealing with a group of enemies.Screenshot: PC InvasionFair warning though, Umami abilities don’t come without a little cost. 3. Red Hulk has been nerfed already in Marvel Snap, but the card should still be playable after today’s over-the-air update for the card battler game. The man the Thunderbolts season was named after was just too big for his own good. Along with the necessary nerf to the large red fellow, five other mediocre cards have been buffed in changes that are already live in the game. View the full article
  4. Blizzard has announced it will not hold its annual BlizzCon event in 2024, but promised the event will return in future years. In a statement to press, Blizzard ******* to share the reason for the cancellation of the event, though it said the decision was "not made lightly." Additionally, the company plans to participate in other industry events throughout the year instead: Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing more details about our launches coming later this year, including World of Warcraft: The War Within and Diablo IV's first expansion, Vessel of Hatred. To celebrate these upcoming releases and to bring our communities together in new and special ways, we will soon share some exciting plans for other industry trade shows and conventions like Gamescom. We can’t wait to tell you more about those plans soon. We’re also looking forward to the Overwatch Champions Series’ stops at both Dreamhack Dallas and Dreamhack Stockholm. And we’re thrilled to be planning multiple, global, in-person events to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Warcraft, which will be held in addition to the in-game celebrations across our Warcraft games throughout 2024. While these events are distinct from BlizzCon, we’re harnessing all of our creativity and imagination to ensure that they carry the same spirit of celebration and togetherness. This news comes just as BlizzCon was getting back on its feet. The event was fully canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, then returned briefly as a digital show in 2021 before going on hiatus again in 2022. Last year, BlizzCon was held again in-person for the first time in four years. While BlizzCon's cancellation may come as a shock to fans, it makes some amount of sense. BlizzCon is traditionally where Blizzard unveils all its major announcements ahead of the coming year, but 2024 would have almost certainly had a thin slate. The next World of Warcraft expansion, The War Within, is planned for release sometime in the summer or fall of this year, ahead of when BlizzCon usually occurs. Diablo 4 does have an upcoming expansion planned for release in late 2024, but it's entirely possible that's slated to happen ahead of BlizzCon as well, leaving Blizzard with little new to reveal on that front either. With its upcoming survival game canceled, that would leave Overwatch 2 and Hearthstone to carry the bulk of the conference's major reveals, and neither game seems poised to sit in the hot seat for an entire conference. What's more, Blizzard was hit by layoffs earlier this year; it was one of multiple divisions impacted by the cutting of 1,900 staff from Microsoft's video game arm in January. With Activision Blizzard still getting its feet under it following its acquisition last year amid a climate of wider industry budget cuts and layoffs, it makes sense not to spend a ton of money on a conference. What is less clear is what BlizzCon will look like when it does return - now under Microsoft's oversight. Microsoft will hold its Q3 earnings call later today, which may explain the timing of the BlizzCon news. Rebekah Valentine is a senior reporter for IGN. Got a story tip? Send it to [email protected]. 5. Game developer Fallen Leaf recently partnered with Studios Extraordinaires to develop film and TV adaptations of their 2023 sci-fi shooter-thriller Fort Solis. Developed by Fallen Leaf and ****** Drakkar, and published by Dear Villagers, Fort Solis takes place on the far side of Mars where engineer Jack Leary responds to a routine alarm at the titular outpost and his night only gets worse from there. Studios Extraordinaires’ André Hedetoft and Andreas Troedsson are attached to co-direct the Fort Solis adaptation. In this exclusive video – which can be viewed via the player above or the embed below – the creative duo brings fans of the game up to speed on the adaptation’s development and explains why they’re making it. Hedetoft and Troedsson were both blown away by the trailer for Fort Solis that dropped at last year’s gamescom and, upon playing the game, knew they had to be the filmmakers to adapt it. “You have a super-cinematic immersive experience playing it, you have amazing characters and actors that brought them to life in the game, and you have some really creative people behind it, and I think this is exactly the kind of dream project to make,” Hedetoft said. “We also have in this story some of the most interesting characters I’ve ever seen and you as a viewer or a player are thrown into that conflict with some really interesting moral dilemmas, ethical questions, and science-fiction thriller mysteries.” Troedsson added: “I think both you and me, we love sci-fi, we love the thriller. When you have a few characters in a very isolated place – I mean, you have everything in Fort Solis, all those elements together. And the thriller is that you don’t really know who is right or who is wrong.” “What we’re doing right now is the most crucial, the most creative part of the whole process,” Troedsson said. “What is the purpose of doing this as a film and how can we emerge it into this new audience as well that haven’t played the game or will probably play it after seeing the film or the other way around.” Hedetoft added they’re currently spending a lot of time playing the game multiple times and discussing “the story that we want to tell. Are we doing this story from the game or expanding it? Or are we telling an entirely different encounter on Mars? I don’t think we can reveal any of that yet.” While no one has been cast yet, Hedetoft said they are talking to “a couple of actors that we’re real excited about.” There's currently no word on if Troy Baker or Julia Brown, who starred in the game, will return for the adaptation. 6. We’re only one night's sleep away from the release of Bandai Namco’s new RPG based on the late Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama’s underappreciated wasteland series, Sand Land. To celebrate the occasion, the game’s developers have shared a message written by the renowned manga creator before his passing in March. In his message, written in January this year, Toriyama admitted to not having had ample time to review all of Sand Land’s gameplay. He continued to praise the game for expanding on his 2000s wasteland manga, saying it is a high-quality standalone game as well as a “highly satisfying action-RPG game.” “First of all, the graphics have an excellent balance of the atmosphere of the manga and its drawn style. The representation looks great,” Toriyama said. “The game will surely provide you an exciting experience with a genuine sense of design and attention to detail, from the many new vehicle designs, various customizations, as well as the background design.” “I myself can only play casual games, but I do check out the trending games my family plays, and I think I know a little something about them even for an old man," Toriyama concluded before giving Sand Land a huge recommendation to his fans. Sand Land launches soon! The mysterious desert world where demons and humans live together from Akira Toriyama. Take off in the Battle Tank and various vehicles to explore the vast regions as Fiend Prince Beelzebub! [Hidden Content] #SANDLAND #AkiraToriyama [Hidden Content] — SAND LAND (@sandlandgame) April 24, 2024 Toriyama’s final message also clarifies a fan theory fans concocted from the tail-end of Sand Land’s Darude Sandstorm trailer. In the trailer, Beelzebub falls through an underwater current and appears in a wasteland similar to Dragon Ball Z’s iconic local. This led fans to believe the Sand Land would have a cheeky connection to Toriyama’s magnum opus. Turns out, the mysterious forested area is a brand-new location made especially for the game. “In the game, there is not only the world of Sand Land, but also a new world called Forest Land with new characters, which were not in the manga,” Toriyama wrote. “You can enjoy a more substantial story, and a vast map to adventure while playing as the Fiend Prince.” In our review, we wrote “Sand Land’s vehicular focus shows potential, but devolves into a by-the-numbers open world action game with storytelling that only occasionally manages to live up to the joys of the original work.” Sand Land releases tomorrow on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. 15. In Patch 7.7.0, Behaviour Interactive quietly ported ***** by Daylight to the Unreal Engine 5. However, things haven’t turned out as expected, and players have been largely disappointed with the game’s graphics following the update, with some claiming it made the game look worse. An April 24 Reddit thread posted by user Mitokovo compared the previous and current versions of ***** by Daylight on Unreal Engine 4 and 5. They looked at the same areas in both and sought to highlight the key differences in graphics, which mostly concerned the lighting. The UE5 version of DBD looks more grey, has thicker fog, and lacks some contrast compared to UE4. The lights also don’t work the same, and either due to a bug or feature, are significantly less pronounced. Those replying generally think the update made the game “washed out,” as one user said, and didn’t add anything significant. View the full article
