The Japan-set *********'s Creed Shadows requires an internet connection to install but not to play after, Ubisoft has confirmed. In a post on X/Twitter, the publisher confirmed Shadows will follow a recent trend for ******* games where even the disc version requires an internet connection before play is possible. Shadows doesn't require an always-online connection, but does require the internet to essentially download part of the game upon install. "We wanted to share some early information on the upcoming launch of *********'s Creed Shadows, following some questions we've noticed in the community," Ubisoft said, addressing concerns raised after the PlayStation Store listed Shadows as an "online play required" game. "*********'s Creed Shadows will not require a mandatory connection at all times. An online connection will be needed to install the game, but will you be able to play the entire journey offline, and explore Japan without any online connection." The PlayStation Store listing has been changed to say "online play optional" despite the install requirement. Larger triple-A video games are slowly but surely transitioning to this method of distribution as physical media becomes a smaller and smaller part of how people buy games. With actual discs becoming less of a priority, what would once be included as a second disc (with an install disc and a play disc) is now essentially added as downloadable content. This means that even single-player games like *********'s Creed Shadows cannot exist without an internet connection. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was one of the first major single-player games to adopt this model, but the trend has continued elsewhere and will likely continue to become more common. Shadows was fully revealed on May 15, 2024 as a *********-set entry in the long-running franchise where players take control of two protagonists: the stealthy shinobi Naoe and the action-orientated Yasuke, who's a real figure from ********* history. IGN had a wealth of exclusive content on the reveal, and you can read about all the gameplay changes, story beats, and open-world assassinating coming with Shadows in our extensive interview with the development team. If that's not enough, check our analysis and explanation of where and when Shadows is set and 40 key details we've learned about the game. You can also watch our full breakdown of the cinematic trailer to discover all its hidden details, Easter eggs, and more. Shadows launches November 12, 2024 for those buying the Gold, Ultimate, or Deluxe Editions at $109.99, $129.99, and $279.99 respectively. The standard $69.99 version is available on November 15, 2024. Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He'll talk about The Witcher all day. View the full article
Activision has announced the formation of Elsewhere Entertainment, a new studio it says will focus on developing a "narrative-based and genre-defining AAA franchise." Elsewhere Entertainment, which is based in Warsaw, is Activision's second Polish studio after the Krakow-based Infinity Ward Poland. The studio has been working behind the scenes up until now, and this is its first public unveiling. According to the blog post revealing the new studio, Elsewhere Entertainment's team includes "storytelling experts" who have previously worked on franchises including The Last of Us, Uncharted, The Witcher, Cyberpunk, Destiny, The Division, and Far Cry. It is currently recruiting developers in hopes of creating a "state-of-the-art and next-generation gaming experience," which IGN understands is not a Call of Duty-related project. Little else is known about Elsewhere Entertainment's first franchise, though the post does mention that the studio hopes to "craft a franchise with an enduring legacy that resonates far beyond games." That would seem to point to a transmedia franchise that will try to replicate the success of The Last of Us and Fallout, or maybe just get its own theme park. To this point, Activision has mostly been known for its work on the Call of Duty series, with ****** Bandicoot developer Toys for Bob opting to go independent following the Xbox acquisition. In addition to the ****** Bandicoot games, Activision Publishing has also released Sekiro: Shadows **** Twice and Destiny. Elsewhere Entertainment's opening stands out in an industry that has lately been rocked by layoffs. Last week, Activision Blizzard parent company Microsoft closed multiple studios including Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin. Activision Blizzard was also impacted by layoffs in the early part of 2024, with Blizzard being particularly affected. It's unclear when Elsewhere Entertainment's game will be released, though based on existing development timelines it's likely to be a few years yet. In the meantime, Activision appears to be preparing to reveal the next Call of Duty at next month's Xbox Showcase, which is set for June 9. The Helldivers 2 community has been through a lot lately, with everything from ******* Major Orders to Sony’s aborted attempt to force PC players to link their accounts to PSN to contend with. Now, the community’s attention has shifted onto a player who has unwittingly become the focus of an altogether more wholesome story. The story starts with a seemingly innocuous player interaction that went viral. A Helldiver called Dremskiy joined a group only to face being kicked from it. “Sorry… I have to kick you,” Dremskiy was told by another Helldiver who said they were playing with friends only. “im frend,” was Dremskiy’s heartbreaking reply. “Don’t make this more difficult…” the player said. The interraction that can make a grown man cry [Hidden Content] — Helldivers 2 Media (@Helldiversmedia) May 13, 2024 Like a Helldiver ragdoll butting heads with a Charger, that interaction flew off, enjoying millions of views across social media, Discord, and forums before inevitably becoming a meme. “im frend”, complete with misspelling, is now part of Helldivers lore. Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead and Sony then had their say, reinforcing and promoting the meme. “For prosperity. For liberty. For democracy. For frend,” Arrowhead tweeted. “im frend ” the PlayStation *** X/Twitter account replied, while still failing to address the fact Helldivers 2 ******** delisted in over 100 countries because of its PSN account policy. im frend — PlayStation *** (@PlayStationUK) May 15, 2024 Now, Helldivers players are reporting brief interactions with Dremskiy, who seems bemused by all the attention. Apparently they’re just happy everyone’s happy, which is lovely. Sony and LEGO are reportedly collaborating on a new PlayStation video game called LEGO Horizon Adventures. Insider Gaming reports the unannounced video game is “essentially Horizon Forbidden West but Lego”, with “realistic graphics.” IGN has asked Sony for comment. X/Twitter user @Kurakasis had previously flagged the collaboration, and Insider Gaming suggests this was the result of a recently discovered trademark filing. That’s pretty much all we have right now. We don’t know which studio is behind the game, or the platforms it will launch on. But Sony is rumored to be set to hold a PlayStation showcase this month. Perhaps we’ll learn more there. While a LEGO Horizon video game may sound like an odd choice, the two brands have collaborated before on LEGO sets based on Guerrilla’s post-apocalyptic franchise. Sony has a quiet year ahead for first-party PlayStation games, and has ruled out sequels in its major franchises such as Spider-Man and **** of War until at least April 2025. But it still has a number of key games set to release over the next 12 months, including PS5 and PC FPS Concord and, potentially, LEGO Horizon Adventures. In February, Sony announced a significant round of layoffs affecting around 900 staff, or about 8% of its global PlayStation workforce. The layoffs affect a number of PlayStation studios, including Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, Firesprite, and, most significantly, PlayStation's London studio. Alongside the layoffs, a number of in-development games were canceled. Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. Riot Games introduced ranked splits to League of Legends in 2023 and increased the number of these to three with the start of season 14. However, some players believe this increased number of splits is to make them “grind more.” A discussion was sparked by one League player on Reddit on May 15, who asked about the logic behind three ranked splits in a single year. They underlined how frustrated they were, since after “working their **** off” to reach Diamond, the rank got reset, and they dropped to Emerald after a few unlucky placement games. Others in the comments quickly replied—it’s to make you play more League. View the full article
