Southfield is what happens when the crops of Stardew Valley have a chance of exploding. While the farming and management genre is so often underpinned by peaceful organizing and relaxing automation, Southfield injects a healthy dose of chaos into the mix. Your next batch could change shape, bounce all over the farm, or even play a song. So while you're building a homestead, crafting structures on your land, and automating where you can, Southfield mainlines physics-based disorder into your hard work. If that sounds like your thing, there's a new closed beta happening very soon. Read the rest of the story... XDefiant is finally upon us. The long-awaited arcade shooter will hopefully buck the trend of Ubi games (reportedly) stuck in development purgatory not turning out great on day one. What's reassuring though is that it looks to be far less aggressive on the monetization front than some of the studio's other games on PS5 and Xbox. On top of this, there are all sorts of ways to cosmetically kit yourself out without spending a dime - in-game, at least. Read the rest of the story... 15 minutes into Prey, the 2017 sci-fi thriller crafted by Arkane Austin, protagonist Morgan Yu shatters their apartment window with a wrench. As hundreds of glass shards fall away, a newly revealed truth changes Morgan’s life forever. This genuinely shocking, perspective-pivoting opening is one of the most incredible introductions to a game world ever made. Seven days into May 2024, Microsoft took up its own metaphorical wrench and shattered Arkane Austin. A veteran of immersive sims – those first-person, highly interactive games where RPG, simulation, and action systems interlock – it was one of the casualties of Xbox’s brutal dismemberment of Bethesda Softworks. This is a heartbreaking situation. Staff ***** off from Arkane Austin have been thrown into the toughest conditions the games industry has ever seen. But, if you’ll permit me to search for the light in this darkness, the soul of the studio has already proven itself incredibly resilient. This is not the first time that financials and parent companies have dictated the course of the immersive sim in Austin, Texas. Despite multiple hardships, the genre always finds a way to survive in this city. Arkane Austin's approach to game design was genuinely beautiful – an elegance matched by few other studios. And, in a drive for soulless corporate number counting, Microsoft has destroyed it. In Microsoft’s own multi-part documentary Power On: The Story of Xbox, a segment discussing the company’s woeful mistreatment of Lionhead Studios saw Phil Spencer say “You acquire a studio for what they’re great at now, and your job is to help them accelerate how they do what they do, not them accelerate what you do.” You’d assume, then, that Xbox would want to foster Arkane Austin. To help it overcome the ******** of Redfall and resume – to quote Xbox’s own Matt ****** – “making impactful and innovative games”. But if a highly profitable corporation worth over $3 trillion has no interest in absorbing one mistake and finding a way to shepherd its artists to success, then one thing is clear: that promise to help studios “accelerate” what they’re good at is empty. Arkane Austin may be gone, but the people still remain. And that brings me back to the studio’s soul. That soul is a community; a growing collective of immersive sim designers that have endured success and hardship in the city of Austin for close to three decades. View the full article

Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian has opened up a new studio in the Polish city of Warsaw. Why? Well, it's causally expanding its influence as it "ramps up" development on "two very ambitious RPGs" that we're definitely not all getting quite hyped up about. Yup, while Baldur's Gate 4 won't be coming from the folks behind BG3, and the "very big RPG that will rule them all" that Swen Vincke's talked about seems like it's still a ways off, Larian's doing some growing. Announced via a tweet, the new studio is called Larian Studios Warsaw, and is based, as you'd expect, in the Polish capital. "With two very ambitious RPGs now starting development," the developer wrote, "what better way to see our visions realised than by growing the team and opening a 7th studio in the heart of Poland’s lively gaming scene!" Grand Theft Auto 6 is essentially locked-in for a fall 2025 release date, and the CEO of the game's publisher Take-Two has said it's "highly confident" it can make that date. Last week, Take-Two graced us with the information that GTA 6 will finally be releasing sometime in fall 2025, a wait of more than a year, but a wait that should feel easier now that we have a rough release window. Now, in an interview with CNBC, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick was asked about the upcoming open-world game's release, including how the publisher is feeling about it. Zelnick was asked about how a release date is generally determined internally, where he noted how you can look at the "number of bugs in a title" to figure out how far along the game is. "For example every one of us will make sure we have as few bugs in a title as possible before we launch. "However in the case of an extraordinary title, for which there are extraordinary expectations, it's not really about bugs. It's about creating an experience that no one has seen before, and Rockstar Games seeks perfection. Perfection is hard to measure." Now, for one, I'm not exactly sure that Rockstar can make an experience no one has seen before, considering GTA 6 is a sequel so how different can it really be? But also, that first trailer clearly shows how Rockstar is tapping into the wildness that is simply the state of Florida, something that could never truly be replicated simply because of how much unbelievable nonsense happens there on a day to day basis. The Shield Generator Pack is a go-to survivability Stratagem for almost any mission in Helldivers 2. It’s easy to use and allows you to tank a great amount of damage in heated encounters. But there aren’t many alternatives to the Shield Pack, apart from Stratagems like the Ballistic Shield or Jump Pack, which are way more situational. “We need things that are going to directly help us otherwise all the loadouts I see will keep including the shield pack,” a Helldivers 2 fan wrote in a Reddit thread on May 19, alongside a few ideas they would love to see in the game.
