  1. Longlegs is off to a very strong start at the box office, and now its distributor Neon is looking to YouTube for its next horror hit. After a lot of potential overhyping prior to its release, Longlegs has opened with a very impressive $22.6 million at the box office, a really good opening for a film with a budget estimated to be under $10 million. Its distributor, Neon, is no stranger to the horror genre, and after Longlegs has done so well it looks like it will be hoping to pull that off again with Shelby Oaks, a documentary-found footage crossover film directed by Chris Stuckmann. If that name sounds familiar to you, that's because Stuckmann is actually best known for his career as a YouTube film critic, where he's amassed more than two million subscribers over the past decade or so. Shelby Oaks was actually initially funded via Kickstarter in 2022, where it managed to raise almost $1.4 million dollars, despite only having a goal of $250,000. To this day, that makes it the most funded horror film on the fundraising site, and by quite a large margin too (the second highest funded raised around $400,000, a whole million less). As the Kickstarter page describes, Shelby Oaks is a horror film about "missing paranormal investigators (the paranormal paranoids), the dark legacy they uncovered, and the far-reaching effects their investigation has as Mia searches for her sister Riley, the lead paranormal investigator, 12 years later. 3. I got significantly better Baldurs Gate 3 because of Critical Role, despite knowing how to play the game since launch. The award-winning turn-based RPG by Larian Studios uses the rules of Dungeons and Dragons fifth edition (popularly referred to as 5e) and so do most of the campaigns on the tabletop roleplaying show the group has been moving away from 5e, as demonstrated by the creation of the Illuminated Worlds and Daggerheart TTRPG systems for Critical Role. I knew of Critical Role and even had a chance to interview them before the release of The Legend of Vox Machina. View the full article
  4. Back in January, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth came out to roaring acclaim amongst RPG fans, quickly becoming the fastest-selling game in the entire Like a Dragon/Yakuza series and one of its best reviewed. After releasing two games in 2023 - Like a Dragon Ishin! and Like a Dragon: Gaiden - and their biggest game ever just six months ago, you could expect Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio to slow down a little and rest on their laurels for a moment. 8. It’s been a few days now since the release of The First Descendant. Over ten million players have jumped into the loot shooter so far, even if no one is really super happy with it. As a loot game, players have unsurprisingly begun optimising the fun out of it. This mainly means devising the most efficient ways to farm in-game, which sadly includes some questionable strategies. Nexon, the game’s developer, is aware of all those tactics, however, and has “aksed players to please stop. Read more View the full article

  10. Enlarge / Artist's conception of Valve's micro-employees hard at work inside your Steam installation (credit: Getty Images) [/url] As a private and generally secretive company, Valve doesn't offer much outside visibility into its inner workings. So when years' worth of data on the company's employee and aggregate payroll numbers leaked recently, we were eager to take a deep ***** to see what those numbers could tell us about the operation and evolution of a company that has a hand in the majority of PC gaming transactions. The recent data comes from a poorly redacted document in Wolfire's antitrust lawsuit against Steam, as first noticed over the weekend by SteamDB's Pavel Djundik. While the key data in the document has now been properly hidden in the court docket, The Verge captured the raw numbers from a table labeled "Employee Headcount and ****** Pay Data, 2003-2021." Breaking down that data by year and department with some simple graphs and statistics, seen below, gives us outsiders a rare partial glimpse into Valve's organization. All told, it's a bit hard to believe that this lynchpin of the PC gaming world has rested on the work of just a few hundred people for many years now. 13. Mappa, the studio behind big series like Jujutsu Kaisen and ******* on Titan, is taking on the remake of Ranma 1/2 next for Netflix. Last month, in celebration of the original Ranma 1/2 anime, it was announced that the classic series would be getting a brand new adaptation. Not much was shared about it at the time, but earlier today it was revealed that none other than Mappa, the slightly newer, rougher **** on the anime block, will be handling the upcoming adaptation, with a first trailer showing off the new series. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, it looks great! The short trailer showed off plenty of fights, mishaps, and more, and right off the bat it's looking like a strong adaptation - in particular I'm loving the colours, which really feel like a modern take on 80s/ 90s anime colouring. Here's hoping this spells the end of dull anime colour palettes! Importantly, there are some big names attached to the project - specifically, a majority of the original cast are back to reprise their roles. There are some changes here and there, for reasons that aren't entirely clear, but for the most part everyone is back, which I'm sure will be welcome news to fans of the original anime. On top of that, Konosuke Uda, an early director of the One Piece anime, will be directing this take, with the series being written by Kimiko Ueno (Delicious in Dungeon), character designs by Hiromi Taniguchi (FLCL Alternative costume designer) and music by Kaoru Wada (Inuyasha). 18. After a full build of the game recently leaked and has ended up offering lots of folks their first taste of the game long before they thought they'd get it, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2's developers have acknowledged what's happened, and urged people not to play the "unfinished" version. If you're out of the loop, a fully-playable version of the game popped up online recently, and has been doing the rounds to such an extent that Space Marine 2 walkthroughs are being posted to YouTube a couple of months before the game's set to actually release on September 9, which obviously isn't ideal. Developer Saber Interactive has been doing its best to limit the damage, and has now issued a formal statement on the *****. Addressing prospective Space Marine 2 players via Twitter, Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment wrote: "We are deeply touched by the overwhelming support we've received from our community following the ***** of an old build of our upcoming game, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. 21. Alien: Romulus is clearly borrowing from the original Alien films aesthetically, but director Fede Alvarez has shared another slightly funny point of inspiration. We really don't know all that much about Alien: Romulus just yet, but its first full trailer dropped last month, and at the very least the vibes are looking strong. It's obviously trying to tap into that hazy look the very first film in the series had, leaning into the movie's 70s origins, but it turns out that isn't the only place the pre-sequel is drawing from. Director Alvarez recently spoke with Total Film (via GamesRadar) about the film, where he shared that the cast and crew would narrate the Xenomorph's movements while on set. Specifically, they would mimic the way David Attenborough talks like in documentaries such as Blue Planet or Planet Earth. "It is done almost like a nature documentary," Alvarez explained of ********* the Xenomorph, which required nine puppeteers in total. "While we were seeing it on set we were joking, [like] 'The creature is coming out slow. It's looking for the scent of the mother…' The creature's not trying to be scary. The creature is trying to get the f**k out of that cocoon, that happens to be a person. It's almost like this is more realistic in a way, but without betraying all the beautiful things of the original designs." Read more View the full article

  25. The daily NYT Mini Crossword shows its appreciation for gleeful pups with the “Apt name for a dog who loves to run free” clue, and I’ve earned a biscuit for solving this one like a good boy.
