Atari 50 was already a fairly comprehensive offering of retro games spanning half a century, launching in late 2022 as a playable museum of sorts charting the classic publisher’s output across arcade machines, the 2600, 5200, 7800 and Jaguar home consoles, 8-bit computers and the Lynx handheld. The more than 100 games included at launch was far from stingy, with an extra dozen being added in a free update at the end of last year. Now the collection will add almost 40 more games in an upcoming ‘Expanded Edition’, taking its total game count to over 150. Read more View the full article

When it comes to instantly recognisable villains, Bowser is the Darth Vader of gaming - even grandparents recognise him as Super Mario's big bad. If Lego was going to make a hulking 12.5-in tall monument to any video game character, it might as well be King Koopa. And much like Bowser's presence in the Super Mario series, the Lego Super Mario The Mighty Bowser (71411) is one hefty set, comprising not far off 3,000 pieces. But it's so much more than just a cool-looking statuette and a contender for the best Lego sets for adults. It's a posable figure, bursting with playability features, and can even be used alongside a Lego Super Mario interactive figure to act out a boss ******, as an epic final stage to your combined Lego Super Mario interactive playsets. The question is, can this Lego incarnation of Bowser hatch an evil plan to kidnap Princess Peach and sit atop our best Lego Mario sets buying guide, or will it be thwarted by a Lego reviewer masquerading as an Italian plumber? *****[/i] was ported from open source code, not run via a classic PC emulator."> Enlarge / Don't get your hopes up—this iOS version of ***** was ported from open source code, not run via a classic PC emulator. (credit: Tom Kidd) [/url] Earlier this year, Apple started officially allowing "retro game emulators" on the iOS App Store without the need for cumbersome jailbreaking or sideloading. But if you want to emulate retro PC games on your iOS device, you are apparently still out of luck. In a recent blog update, iDOS developer Chaoji Li said that the latest version of the DOSBox-based MS-DOS emulator was finally rejected from the iOS App Store this month after a lengthy, two-month review process: They have decided that iDOS is not a retro game console, so the new rule is not applicable. They suggested I make changes and resubmit for review, but when I asked what changes I should make to be compliant, they had no idea, nor when I asked what a retro game console is. It's still the same old unreasonable answer along the line of "we know it when we see it." The developer of iOS Virtual Machine app UTM told a similar tale of App Store rejection on social media. The reported two-month review process for the UTM app ended with "the App Store review board determin[ing] that 'PC is not a console' regardless of the fact that there are retro Windows/DOS games fo[r] the PC that UTM SE can be useful in running," the developer said. AMD has just revealed that it's working on a system that uses AI to reduce the size of game downloads in the future. The technology is called Neural Texture Block Compression, and AMD says it plans to present it at the Eurographics Symposium on Rendering (EGSR) in London at the start of July 2024. Much like Nvidia, AMD is making a big deal about AI at the moment, with AMD AI even being the new brand name for its laptop gaming CPUs. However, it still has a lot of catching up to do with Nvidia on this front. Its current GPUs, such as the Radeon RX 7800 XT, for example, may be among the best graphics cards for gaming, but their AI matrix cores are still largely going unused in games right now. Once players enter the Shadow Keep in Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, they'll see a pair of on-screen messages that read: "Somewhere a Great Rune has broken," and following shortly after, "And so too has a powerful charm." These pop-ups are accompanied by a large shattering noise (presumably the Great Rune breaking), but no other indication of what they mean. As with most of Elden Ring's main story, the player is left to explore the world and infer plot details on their own. View the full article
Right, I've got a lot of racing to do for reasons we'll get into soon, so I'll make this quick. Forza Horizon 4 is getting delisted from online storefronts on both Xbox and PC in December this year, Playground Games has announced, citing licensing and agreements with partners as the reason it's being taken down. The full delisting happens on December 15, 2024, with Playground explaining in a blog post: "This means the game and its additional content will no longer be available for purchase [from that date]. Players who already own the game and its content will be able to download and play it as normal, including its offline, online, and multiplayer features; physical copies of the game purchased after this date will also work and will be able to use online features." If you played it via Xbox Game Pass, and then bought DLC, you'll be "eligible to receive a game token" for it as long as your subscription was still active as of June 25. In the run up that fateful day in December, things are also gradually being wound down, with the game's DLC already only being purchasable via buying the Deluxe or Ultimate Editions, and the current Series being the last one.
