  1. In 2015 it was announced that Borderlands Online had been canceled, and a bunch of people asked, "What was Borderlands Online anyway?" That's because it was planned to be a China-only MMO set in the Borderlands universe, with the kind of free-to-play model publishers used to see as a good way to "crack the Asian market" but wouldn't bother with in the west. Things have changed, hey?.. Read more.View the full article

  8. Gears of War: Reloaded is bringing the beloved cover shooter to every platform under the sun - apart from Nintendo Switch, unfortunately - and fans couldn't be happier. It follows on from another Xbox-owned franchise that got a remaster in the form of Oblivion Remastered, which took the world by storm and sold millions of copies in just a handful of days. While Xbox is likely hoping for another win with a Gears of War remaster, those who are deeply familiar with the franchise may want to hold off on buying it straight away. View the full article

  10. Let's all make like my usual Oblivion playthrough and get our inventories severely over-encumbered with genre staples, cult classics, and a few hidden gems that might just surprise you. Whether you're on the hunt for sprawling RPGs, nostalgic remakes, or something stylish and brand new, there’s a little something tucked into each platform’s treasure chest. And at discounts this deep, it's difficult not to justify one more download (or five). This Day in Gaming In retro news, I'm using a flaming deku stick to light a 22-candle cake for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, a GameCube gem worth every rupee. I have vivid launch memories of being blown away by the (fandangle and fairly groundbreaking) cel-shaded visuals and the sheer size of this vast Waterworld. Furthermore, the "living cartoon" aesthetic allowed for wackier than usual NPCs to shine through like never before. Cases in point: a significantly larger role for the turbo-flamboyant Tingle, plus the hilarity of that Battleship Minigame Guy. "Ker-BOOOM!" 16. Let me state from the start that I don't like fictional universe crossovers. Whether it's a Magic The Gathering set themed around Doctor Who or riding a Chocobo in Assassin's Creed Origins, if it involves smushing two entirely different universes together, I'm not into it. 18. Growing older has taught me a lot of things over my 36 years on Earth, but one realization I've been thinking a lot about lately is just how much damn stuff one can accumulate over their life. I recently re-organized my office and bedroom space with a variety of changes and a lot of subtractions/cleaning, but another focal point of the overhaul was the backdrop of my webcam that I've meticulously crafted to display my passions and hobbies. While some people blur their backgrounds or keep their cams off, I like having a background, a personality that shows up occasionally within the professionalism of a work setting. Photo by Scott Duwe It started out as something cool and a bit of a project to work on, but I also soon realized it's more than that. It tells a little bit about my life story. When joining Destructoid meetings with my co-workers, they're unfortunately greeted with the image of my face, so I've tried my best to snazz up the background with my shelves. And in doing so I've noticed that a lot of my little odds and ends and trinkets that I've collected over multiple decades say a lot about me and my interests, but every knick-knack has a story to tell, too. And let me repeat: this stuff has been compiled over decades of my life, as this sort of decorative shelving does not happen overnight. Taking a closer look at my shelves tells a story of a gaming journalist and writer who's covered a lot of different specific games while also having a deeper love for others. At one point, I was dead-set on collecting every Overwatch Funko POP! figure. That was until the Symmetra figure took a nose-dive off of a shelf and destroyed the arm of a premium Overwatch Reaper statue that was a gift from a friend that I met through gaming. Reaper is buried somewhere and Symmetra has been kicked to the curb in a closet or a box elsewhere, but some other Overwatch heroes still remain throughout. I've spaced out my figures and statues with books on that bottom shelf, but those also have several ties to gaming, like the official Mass Effect books, the novelization of Metal Gear Solid, S.D. Perry's classic Resident Evil novels, and Hideo Kojima's autobiography. The influence that games have had on me can be seen in everything. The second shelf has a number of Destiny statues because I'm not sure where I would be without that franchise. If not for the thousands of hours I've put into those games, the professional coverage of it I've done, or the friends I've made through it and because of it, I likely wouldn't be here, so it deserves its own spotlight. Photo by Scott Duwe You might've spotted some Ninja Turtles, too. That's because "turtle" was my first word, and TMNT were my first nerd love. I was born in 1989 (ow) so they were and still are a big part of pop culture, as is Spider-Man who can also be seen all over, my No. 1 favorite character of all time, and one which I have looked to as a source of inspiration throughout life's struggles. The little Michelangelo plushie stands atop the trophy of my biggest struggle, a kidney-shaped pillow I was given in the hospital after my successful kidney transplant in July 2023. I was born with kidney disease, suffered through dialysis for many years, but came out the other side happier and healthier. But just like me, my shelves are a constant work-in-progress, too. I'm always shifting something into a different area, moving something out and replacing it for another item, and so on. And just like life, it's not all happiness and positivity because some of these memories are tied to sad or negative feelings. Because that's life. This other shelf off to the side features Mass Effect's Garrus and Mordin ("Would've loved to run tests on the seashells") and Songbird from BioShock Infinite, two franchises that have had a profound impact on me. But the space above it on the wall is empty, filled with opportunity for something new. Or maybe something old. Photo by Scott Duwe With each statue and figure, each plushie or book or commemorative item, I have a memory tied to it. That memory could be a person, a struggle, an event, or just something I enjoy. These things gather and accumulate over time like life experience, and the years on our bodies. Getting old sucks, and it seems to make you a bit of a pariah in the gaming community where players and active members are seemingly getting younger by the day. But aging is also awesome and the absolute best we can expect in life, because it allows you to look back on your journey and appreciate what you have, so I think we might as well all display our passions proudly. Do you have a webcam meeting backdrop? What does yours look like? If you're a gamer like me, do you have your own shelves? Let me know in the comments because I genuinely would love to see what everyone else's nerdy walls look like. The post My Zoom background isn’t just a nerdy gamer display shelf, it’s multiple chapters of my life story appeared first on Destructoid. View the full article
  19. When Rockstar Games randomly drops a trailer, it feels like a national holiday for gamers. We've got time to kill before the game drops, so why not overanalyze it? Before you zoom in and examine every pixel, here are 15 GTA 6 Trailer 2 hidden details you might've missed. 15. Jason and Lucia have a **** reptile Screenshot and remix by Destructoid We're going to start with the most groundbreaking detail from the GTA 6 trailer: Lucia and Jason have a **** reptile. Monumental, right? Look, I know it's not the most out-of-this-world feature, but it's pretty interesting that the two have one. Although the **** is no Chop from GTA 5, there could be a system that allows you to take care of a snake. 14. Jason takes a jab at GTA 6 leaks Screenshot via Rockstar Games YouTube The first thing to come out of Jason's mouth is "Just fixing some leaks," what's seemingly a snarky comeback to the fiasco of the GTA 6 leaks. Rockstar Games seems to be poking fun while also acknowledging its efforts to keep those leakers at bay. Looks like they're taking care of business in more ways than one. 13. A glimpse of a PlayStation 5 console Screenshot and remix by Destructoid The Grand Theft Auto 6 Trailer 2 has an Inception-inspired take by having a PlayStation 5 console within the game. You can see the platform just to the left of a TV, followed by two controllers lying on a table. This could hint that Lucia and Jason can play a few games (maybe some old Rockstar titles?) or just a simple prop for all the PlayStation lovers. 12. Phil Cassidy's Return Screenshot via Rockstar Games YouTube Vice City's Phil Cassidy looks to be returning in Grand Theft Auto 6, as the trailer debuts Phil's Ammu-Nation shop. This character has appeared in several other GTA games, including Liberty City Stories and GTA 3. In GTA 6, he'll presumably be your go-to guy for all things guns. 11. Workouts are potentially making a comeback Screenshot via Rockstar Games YouTube For a quick second, you can spot Jason pumping iron on a bench press. Since it's not some random NPC but our main guy doing it, we might be looking at workouts making a comeback. San Andreas had CJ bulking up or slimming down depending on his gym routine—maybe Lucia and Jason will be hitting the weights, too, adding a bit more realism to GTA 6. 10. References to Florida's real-life Hurricane Roxanne Screenshot and remix by Destructoid Since Vice City is based in Florida, you can bet there will be plenty of local references. One standout is a sign spotted in the GTA 6 trailer featuring Hurricane Roxy. This seems to be a nod to the real-life storm that hit southeast Florida back in 1995. 9. More hints to Lucia and Jason's Bonnie and Clyde storyline Screenshot via Rockstar Games YouTube As a crime-fueled couple, many have speculated that Lucia and Jason are inspired by none other than Bonnie and Clyde. While nothing is confirmed, the second trailer definitely adds more fuel to the fire, with both protagonists robbing places left and right. Their chemistry only intensifies this theory, making the comparison feel even more spot-on. 8. Possible fight club feature Screenshot via Rockstar Games YouTube Lucia can be seen throwing hands in a fight club-style setting, which might be her way of staying in shape, just like Jason with his bench pressing. It could also suggest Lucia has a different set of abilities, leaning into Grand Theft Auto's classic beat-em-up action. This could work similarly to GTA 5, where each protagonist had unique skills for different situations. 7. Miami Dolphins-inspired sports team Screenshot via Rockstar Games YouTube I'm not much of a sports person, but even I know the Miami Dolphins are a big deal in Florida. It's no surprise to see a version of the team appear in GTA 6; this time, rebranded as the Manatees. The jersey shown in the trailer looks almost identical to the real one, and now I'm curious to see if there's a full-blown football stadium somewhere in the game. 6. More car decals Screenshot and remix by Destructoid In my list of the 10 things GTA 6 needs, more car customization was definitely near the top. And from what we can see in trailer two, it looks like we're getting just that. While Jason's driving, you can spot some paw print artistry on a car, hinting at more customization options with decals. Stickers and decals were usually reserved for mods in GTA 5, but the sixth iteration could already have them available in the base game. 5. Hidden Florida phone numbers Screenshot via Rockstar Games YouTube The second Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer is packed with phone numbers, from one on the cash register to a sign at a fishing shop. Naturally, I had to call them up and found out that they're, in fact, Florida numbers. Sadly, nothing exciting happens when you call, but something could be hidden later. 4. Florida's Monorail System Screenshot and remix by Destructoid Like GTA 5's Los Santos transit system, Vice City has a monorail that appears in the trailer. In Florida, this kind of transport takes you to the world-famous Disney World, so it's possible GTA 6's monorail could take you to an amusement park of its own. It's not like Rockstar Games hasn't done an amusement park feature before, considering Bully had a place where you could ride attractions and win prizes with minigames. 3. First-person mode could be returning Screenshot via Rockstar Games YouTube As Jason drives to Lucia, the view switches from third-person to first-person mode. It's pretty clear that first-person mode will be part of GTA 6, just like in GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. It'll be fascinating to experience Vice City from this perspective, soaking in all the details up close. 2. Fishing as a possible new activity Screenshot via Rockstar Games YouTube There are a few teasers suggesting fishing might finally make its way into the Grand Theft Auto universe, with fishing boats and shops making an appearance. Sure, it feels a little out of place in a world filled with chaos and crime, but players have been begging for it for ages and even creating mods for it in GTA 5. It could be a unique new way to earn cash and maybe even start your own fish farm. 1. Footage was all captured on the PlayStation 5 Screenshot and remix by Destructoid If you stayed all the way to the end of the GTA 6 second trailer, you'll notice the entire video was "captured on PS5." Thus, it's not just for show. It's what we'll actually see when we dive into the game. What's more, the footage doesn't specify a Pro version, so the visuals are top tier, even on the standard console. I can't wait to see what it'll look like in actual gameplay, and I'm hoping we get a trailer for that soon. Got to make the wait worthwhile somehow. 20. Thanks to a recent leak, Genshin Impact players can examine a detailed gameplay overview of Dahlia, the upcoming 4-Star Hydro Sword character from Mondstadt. While Dahlia will feature in Version 5.6 during the Archon Quest, the deacon of the Church of Favonius is set to become playable in the subsequent update. Genshin Impact fans are familiar with Dahlia through Rosaria and Barbara, fellow members of the clergy in the City of Freedom. However, they have also known of Dahlia as a playable character since the initial flood of Fontaine leaks in 2023. Him entering the story is thus the final chapter of a long journey of speculation and waiting. View the full article
